Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hey everyone, Welcome back to the Oily Academy, your go
to podcast for all things essential oils, natural health, and
holistic wellness. I'm Wendy Selvig. I'm a startifighter, roam with therapist,
a natural health researcher for a nonprofit organization, and an
essential oil educator. Now, before we dive in, let me
just give you a quick disclaimer. Y'all know I'm not
(00:22):
a doctor and this podcast is for informational purposes only.
Nothing I share is intended to diagnose you, treat you,
or cure any condition, and it hasn't been evaluated by
the FDA, So do your own research and consult a
healthcare professional before making any health decisions. Now, now that
I've got that all out of the way, let's talk
about one of my absolute favorite essential oil blends, Thieves Oil. Now,
(00:44):
if you've been in the essential oil world for any
length of time, you've most likely heard of Thieves Oil.
It is one of Young Living Essential Oil's most popular blends,
and I give them a big shout out because they
are the ones who actually came up with the recipe
for it and got it on the market so many
years ago. Many other companies you know, have copied the
recipe and also put out thieves oil, but it is
(01:07):
Young Living's baby. It's the one that they put it out,
and it is so strong and so powerful, and it
was the first oil I ever ever used, So it
is what got me into essential oils. I actually had
a friend give me a bottle of it, and I
didn't even know what essential oil was. I was like, oh,
it's this tiny little bottle and I don't know what
(01:27):
to do with it. So I sat out on my
medicine shop in my bathroom, shut the door, you know,
on the mirror, and I let it sit there for
nine months. And then one day my son was at
school and I got a call and they said, please
come get him. He's got one hundred and three point
five fever, and actually half the class has fevers. Could
you please take him to the doctor's office, and if
(01:48):
we get enough people to report that they all have
the same thing, we can shut down the classroom. And
I was like, oh no. So I took him and
they did the tests on him and they said, yes,
this is influenza B. This is a really bad strain.
He is not gonna be over this. For two weeks
and tamiflu won't even touch it. They were just like like,
you're gonna have to work really hard just to keep
(02:09):
his temperature down and try to keep him comfortable. And
I'm thinking, oh my gosh, I mean, I think he
was like second grade, you know, And I'm thinking he's
gonna be he's sick. He's gonna be sick for two weeks.
That means I'm gonna get it. That means my husband's
gonna get it, Like our household's gonna be sick for
a month. This is how I'm thinking, you know, this
is like doomsday. And so I got him home and
(02:29):
I remembered about this little bottle of essential oil, and
I remember my friend saying, hey, get a colder flu,
like try this thieves oil. And so I still I'm like,
I don't know what to do, but I know, why not,
why not try anything? I've already been to the doctor.
They say nothing else will work. So I called her
and she said, yeah, take it and rub it on
the bottoms of his feet every hour, like every hour
(02:52):
on the hour, all day long. She's like, you wanna
it's just beginning. It's you don't want it to grow
into this huge flu, right, So so kick it while
it's small and hit it every hour. So that's what
I did. I actually didn't even on the bottoms of
the feet. It's your own choice. I'm supposed to recommend
that you use carrier oil, but I have learned over
(03:14):
time just about for everybody, the bottoms of your feet
is a different kind of skin than other kinds of skin.
It's tougher and it can take essential oils really easily,
and even kids like I can put it on the
bottoms of my kid's feet and then they don't complain.
They don't feel nothing. So if you had sensitive skin
and you felt like, oh my feet fell hot, then
(03:36):
just add some carry oil, add some coconut oil or
avocado oil or something like that to it. But with
most kids, most people, you can just rub it straight
on the bottoms of the feet and rub it in.
And I did that and the next morning he woke
up no fever at all, totally fine. Mom. Can I
go to school? I'm like, no, you can't go to school.
(03:57):
They're all sick there. I mean, you know, it's when
I'm think so. But this rocked my world because I
had just basically had the doctor say, nothing's gonna touch it.
Tamically won't touch it. He's going to be sick for
two weeks. It's it's influenza beat. And I just put
some oil on his feet every hour all day and
(04:17):
the next morning he woke up completely fine. So this
is a very for me. This is a very powerful oil.
And this was the reason I started studying, like what
is this? What are central oils? Why did this work?
You know, I just didn't know. So what makes thieves
oils so powerful? Or we're going to break down the
key ingredients and talk about it now. Before I tell
(04:40):
you about these ingredients, I want to just let you
know and remind you. And if you don't know, essential
oils are the immune system of a plant. So you
know plants have there's fatty oils and there's essential oils,
and they are completely different. Fatty oils come from the
seed and so it is the calories, it is the fat.
It is the energy to birth and grow a baby plant,
(05:05):
completely different function than an essential oil. Essential oil is
like the blood. It's going up and down inside the
stems and the leaves and the flowers and the roots.
It's going all around. It is literally like the blood,
and it's carrying nutrients, it's carrying anti microbial properties. If
a plant gets injured, it's going to go to that
(05:25):
injury and try to repair it. If there's it's going
to try to kill any virus's, fungus or bacteria so
that it protects the plant. I mean every essential oil
this is its function and properties. So any essential oil,
like you, if you have a few of them, you
(05:47):
know it's it's not that one essential oil only does
one thing. It's like all essential oils do this for
the plant. They are all aniviral, all antibacterial, all antifungal. Right,
so if you aren't sure what to use, just grab
an oil. Like they have all these kinds of properties. Now,
some of them are much have much higher levels of
(06:09):
certain properties. So some of them are way more animicrobial
than others as far as how it would affect the
human body. And so the ones that are in this
blend specifically are all that way. So let me just
tell you we've got five different oils that are blended together.
We have clove, which is one of the highest antioxidant
essential oils, and it's known for immune supporting properties. It's
(06:34):
also been used for centuries in oral health. You know
these clove oil at the dentists to like numb and
deaden you know, your skin before they give you a shot.
So clove it's it's been used for a long, long,
long time, and it's natural and our bodies you typically
don't react to it. Lemon oil, it's a powerful cleanser
(06:58):
that also supports the immune system and helps purify the air.
Cinnamon bark, Now, this is a very strong, strong, strong
oil and cinnamon bark. You don't want to put on
your skin without putting some carrier oil of some kind.
You don't want to drop it in your mouth. You
definitely don't want to put it in your ear. I
mean it brings all the blood to the surface really quickly,
(07:22):
and it's warming, it's invigorating. It's traditionally been used for
its anti microbial properties though, and that it is one
of the powerful constituents of this oil blend. Now Eucalyptus
radiata is in there now. Eucalyptus radiata also has these
kinds of animi microbial properties, but it also supports respiratory
(07:43):
health and has cleansing properties. It helps your lungs to
open up eucalyptus is just really known as a respiratory oil,
but it also just really does kill the things all right. Now.
Rosemary is the final oil in this blend, and it's
known for its ability to boost circulation and mental clarity.
Those are like really great things about it, but it
(08:05):
also has antimicromial properties. So when you put these all
five together, it's really strong and you want to diffuse it.
In the air. You're breathing it in, you're getting into
your lungs, it's getting on your skin. When it goes
into your nose, it actually goes up the olfactory nerve,
crosses the blood brain barrier and gets into your brain
(08:26):
bloodstream and amygdala, which is the emotional processing center of
your brain. It gets there through your nose. So you
can diffuse the oil. You can add it onto your
skin topically, and if it's labeled for it only a
brand that's labeled for it, so you do not do
this with most brands. But if it is labeled for ingestion,
(08:48):
you can put some in a capsule and take it
with some carrier oil in that capsule with it, just
to keep it from being too strong, and you can
put some under your tongue. If you can hack it,
it's strong. You can put a drop in your tea
with a little honey and lemon and drink that. But
(09:09):
again only if it's labeled for ingestion. All right, well,
why would you choose Young Livings thieves? Right? So there's
other brands out there, and you've heard me talk about
this before. Not all brands are equal, Actually most of
them are not. Most oil companies get their oils from
the same handful of distilleries around the world, and those
(09:30):
are perfume distilleries, and those distilleries do not use bats
that are clear and safe for internal consumption or actually, truthfully,
I wouldn't want to put an oil that has aluminum
and lead in it on my skin either. So unless
you know your essential oil brand has distilled their oil
and surgical stainless steel, And if you have a brand
(09:51):
that you love, I would call them, like call them
and ask them, hey, what are your distillation units made
out of? Like do you use surgical stainless steel? They
may not know. And if they don't know, if they
can't answer that, then you need to reconsider that because
they often just buy oil from other companies and just
one day they might have surgical stain in the steel,
(10:13):
the other day it might not be. I mean, it's
kind of how it goes. So anyway, I love Young
Living's brand because of their seed to seal quality commitment.
When it comes to essentral oils, really purity does matter.
And there are a lot of knockoff versions of Thieves
on the market, but like I said, they're not all
(10:34):
created equal, and a lot of times they have synthetic
fillers and additives and chemicals, and those chemicals can harm you.
If you're intending to use this oil for your health,
you are better off to not use the oil. Just
put them all away. Don't use essential oils if you
don't know your oil is pure and not added to
(10:56):
And the plants like Young Living make sure that their
plants are non g and they don't use pesticides, and
they don't use chemicals. All those things matter. Those chemicals
can end up in your oil, and they can affect
the plant, and they can make the plant not therapeutic,
like not have all the properties like you have to
be so careful and so anyway, I know you've heard
(11:19):
me talk about this before, but I love the Thieves
oil blend from Young Living and it is definitely the
way to go. Final thoughts, Thieves is one of those
powerhouse blends that every home should have in my opinion,
and whether you're looking to support your immune system, clean
your home naturally, or just enjoy the warm and spicy aroma,
(11:39):
Thieves as a must have. Do you have a favorite
way to use Thieves oil? I'd love to hear about it.
