(00:04):
Hello, and welcome back to anotherepisode of the Organized Mom Show. I'm
your host, Gemma, and I'mhere to hold your hand through all of
the life admin the housework, thework work, self care, to do
lists, relationships, and everything elsethe one hundred and one things that you
might be trying to fit into yourday to day. So, without further
(00:26):
ado, let's dive into today's topic. Hello, how is everybody doing?
Happy Monday? I want to talkto you about something that I say a
lot, and I sort of sayit a lot in a throwaway sentence,
like if you ever listen to anyof the Guided Sessions, you will have
heard me say, like it's onrepeat. You can only ever do the
(00:49):
very best with the time and energythat you're available to you today. And
I want to explore that a littlebit really because it's something that's so important
and also so a key to theOrganized one method and every you know the
whole message behind it, really, and that is it can feel like you
are always on we are always chasingour tails when it comes to cleaning the
house, because the housework never ends, does it. It literally never ends.
(01:14):
It's not one of those things thatyou can go tick done, don't
need to do that for another threehundred and sixty five days of the year.
Wouldn't that be amazing? But it'salways going to rear its head again
ten minutes later, fifteen minutes later. You know, the next day,
there's always going to be more todo. People eat, there's going to
be dishes, People use the bathroom, and so there's going to be a
bathroom to clean. You know, there's teenagers, there's going to be you
(01:37):
know, there's going to be mess. And I think it's really important just
to acknowledge that, and to acknowledgethe fact that if we let ourselves and
if we had the inclination, wecould be cleaning for twenty four hours a
day, I mean literally, andwho wants to be doing that? Because
there's more to life than housework, isn't that. So if you feel like
(02:00):
you're stuck in a never ending cycleof mess and stress and you can't quite
seem to get your handle on it, just grab yourself a cup of tea,
let's have a little quick let's havea quick break, and let's have
a chat about it. Because I'mgoing to help sort of dive into why
being wise with both your energy andyour time is an absolute game changer when
(02:21):
you think about that in terms oflike your cleaning and your cleaning routine.
So time is precious. We knowthis time is like cash. If you've
read my second book, The OrganizedTime Technique, you know you say,
I say all the time. Ourtime is like cash. The only difference
is with time, you can't bankit, you can't save it for a
rainy day, you can't borrow anyextra of it. What we've got is
(02:45):
what we've got. And that canbe a really stark, sobering thought in
all aspects of life, whether it'syour career, your relationships. You know
you are you in a dead endrelationship with someone that you're like, oh,
I'll always did my life with thisperson. You cannot time back.
It's quite a scary it's quite ascary thought. But when you think about
it in terms of cleaning and likehow we are having to clean because we
(03:12):
want to live in a clean homeand have a nice environment. If if
you are spending hours scrubbing and dusting, you're missing out on all sorts,
aren't you? On parenthoard life, your social life. So it's really important
that we are savvy with the timenot only that, so that we can
(03:35):
make sure that the time that wedo spend and the energy that we do
spend on the cleaning is efficient. And that's why the organizable method works.
Because I don't know about you,but how I mean, I use my
own app, right, I usedit. Mike came in the other day.
It's like why I was cleaning thekitchen and Mike was like, what
are you doing using the app?Surely that's all in your brain? And
I was like, yeah, butI don't want I don't want to have
(03:57):
to do any thinking about cleaning.Actually don't want to do anything. I
want to go to the app andI want just to literally do I want
to be told what to do,because we've all been in that position,
haven't we, Where we've got fiveminutes, we've got ten minutes, the
baby's napping or something, and likeyou get stuck in this, Oh my
gosh, what am I going tobe doing? You kind of like spin
around on the spot and your mindkind of goes blank. You go into
(04:20):
like panic mode about what it isyou want to be doing. You don't
know where to start on your todo list. So if you have only
a finite amount of time, andif you have only a finite amount of
energy, really important that we areefficient with that so that we can make
sure that we get as much donein what we have available to us.
(04:42):
And that's why the organized one methodlike in its essence is so simple but
so effective. And also like whenyou think about your energy, just like
time, and we are all different. We've all got different energy levels,
like depending on what day of thecycle, your cycle you might be in,
like how many hours you've worked thatday or week, if you are
(05:06):
if you've got if you're challenged withan illness of any type. Everyone everyone
is different. So we need tobe realistic with the amount of energy that
we have as individuals, just likewe need to be realistic with the amount
of time we have for our individualcircumstances. So think about the last time
(05:27):
that you went on a cleaning likeblitz, and it might have been really
recently. You know, we're inJanuary now. Maybe you got to the
end of Christmas and you were justlike ah, and you like spent two
days just clean the whole house beforeyou went back to work. I bet
you felt so wiped out at theend of it, like, oh my
god, I if I ever seeanother duster again, I think I'll be
(05:47):
sick. You know, we've all, we've all been there. So if
you sort of think about your energykind of like the battery on your phone.
If you use it too much andyou don't plug yourself in, you
don't recharge your you're going to berunning on empty. And who wants to
exhaust themselves and use all of thatbattery when on cleaning, when you could
(06:11):
be using it on other more importantstuff. And the only other thing that
I say on repeat, apart frombeing your future friend, is there's more
to life and house There really ismore to life and housework. So by
making sure that you are compartmentalizing andthe cleaning, you can keep your energy
levels up for the truly important thing. And when you approach the cleaning as
(06:35):
a task in your life, thatis finite. And you know, you,
you know, we know that thecleaning is always going to be there
tomorrow. But you have only gotso much time to pay attention to it
today. You'll come back and paya similar amount of attention to it tomorrow.
But if you say, right today, I just and all I've got
is ten minutes, literally, that'sall I've got. If you are consistent
(06:58):
with that and allow your to justdo ten minutes, ten minutes is better
than nothing. I did a realtoday. Someone reached out to me on
Instagram and I'm trying to be moreencouraging. I'm trying to be more encouraging
on Instagram and TikTok over twenty twentyfour. It's one of my goals to
sort of really get in there withyou guys and sort of genuinely be your
(07:23):
personal trained of a housework. So, like this post sort of said,
I've wanted to do TOM for ayear. I've wanted to start TOM for
twelve months, but I just Ilook at the amount of stuff that I
need to do. I look atthe amount of clutter that I've got in
my home, and I just thinkit's too much to even attempt boot camp.
That's a whole year wasted of sayingI need to wait. I need
(07:46):
to wait a whole year with noaction. And I worked out that if
you commit to doing ten minutes aday of decluttering, for example, if
that's the challenge that you're facing atthe moment, if you did that for
three hundred and sixty five days,Okay, maybe you miss Christmas Day,
so maybe you just do three hundredand sixty four. That's roughly sixty hours
(08:07):
a year. Sixty hours of decluttering, you get an awful lot done.
If someone if you said to yourself, I'm going to spend sixty hours straight
decluttering, I bet you'd get yourwhole house done. So by shifting your
perspective and saying, yeah, I'veonly got ten minutes, but I know
that if I come back every day, I know if I am persistent and
(08:28):
consistent, it will make a difference. It's impossible for it not to.
And don't forget for lots of us, having a cluttered home can sort of
raise stress levels. It can leadto like a cluttered mind. So if
you're smart about your cleaning and you'redecluttering, if you're using the organized one
method, if you're focusing on whatreally needs attention, you'll find that your
(08:50):
home becomes a much more calmer placethat you enjoy going back to. And
very often, if you are goinghome after a long day at work or
maybe you've had a frazzle day,you know, with the kids or whatever,
and you walk into a home that'scluttered, it can bring you down.
(09:13):
If you walk into a kitchen that'slovely and clean in the morning,
it can give you a little bitof a lift, you know. That's
why it's really important to try andmake sure that your kitchen is somewhat decent
before you go to sleep, becauseyou're starting the day off the next day
on the right foot. And also, you know, when you think about
like your family and maybe you're raisingkids, if you are modeling to them
(09:35):
that you are working out what youhave available to you to today, like
energy wise, time wise, toput into domestic tasks, that's a really
healthy thing to model. You're showingthem that it's important that we do them,
but also that there's a balance thereand that there isn't any such thing
as perfect, so that you're teachingthem this skill to sort of assess on
(09:58):
a day basis, we're checking withourselves how am I feeling? Have I
got a thirty minute clean in metoday? Or have I only got a
ten minute clean in me today? And then work it out. And then
once you've worked out what time andwhat energy you have available, then you
can cut your cleaning cloth accordingly andsay right, I'm just going to stick
(10:18):
to the priority jobs today, oryou know what, I feel like I
can give a little bit more todayand I am in the mood to do
a deeper clean, and don't forgetif you have got the Organized mom app
if you only if you're a memberof the Tom Rocks section of that,
which is like a bolt on theother guided cleaning sessions, then you can
search by mood energy and today actuallya lovely motivation verse clean went live which
(10:43):
is only a fifteen minute clean,so perfect if maybe you're just not feeling
it, or maybe you have onlygot fifteen minutes and you just need to
sort of hit the main areas ifyour home, and I will guide you
through a five minute very quick cleanof the kitchen, living room, and
the bathroom, so five minutes ineach. And also please remember, I'm
going to leave you with this finalthought. When it comes to cleaning,
(11:05):
it's about quality, not quantity.Right. We can fah for hours,
Right, we can faf for hours, and it can look like we've actually
done anything. Cleaning smarter not harder. So spending actual less time cleaning doesn't
necessarily mean you're compromising on the cleanlinessof your home. It's about being really
(11:26):
selective and focusing on the tasks thatwill make the biggest impact, which is
one of the major things of TomRocks. I always get you doing the
priority jobs first. So maybe evenif it's just literally a quick hoover of
the living room floor or a reallyquick wipe down of the bathroom, because
that's all you have the time for, it's all you have the energy for.
It's amazing how a few well chosentasks and just transform your home.
(11:52):
So I hope that's helped. We'vetaken, like you know, we've really
peeled back the idea of only doingthe best with the time and energy that
you have. There is more tolife than housework. The mess will always
come back. It will always comeback. So it's much better and much
more sensible, in my opinion,to make sure that you put it in
its little box and make your peacewith the fact that you will never be
(12:16):
truly done. So all you canpromise yourself is that you would just do
your best today. All right, that's a wrap for today's episode of The
