(00:04):
Hello, and welcome back to anotherepisode of The Organized Mom Show. I'm
your host, Gemma, and I'mhere to hold your hand through all of
the life admin, the housework, the work work, self care, to
do lists, relationships, and everythingelse, the one hundred and one things
that you might be trying to fitinto your day to day. So,
(00:26):
without further ado, let's dive intotoday's topic. Hello everybody, I'm going
to say it if you hear anystrange noises, I've got Rocky nestled in
behind me. Kenny, did youdid the microphone pick up? I haven't
got wind anyway. Now, Ohmy god, Rocky, he's snoring his
(00:48):
little head off. We went offfor a really big walk earlier to day,
so I think you might be ableto pick up on it if you've
got headphones in anyway. I doapologize, but that's obviously not what we're
talking about to day. We aretalking about cleaning emergencies, things that you
can do fast to make sure thatyour house looks as good as possible in
(01:08):
the shortest time possible. Now,you could need this for many reasons.
This could be that you have aguest coming over and you haven't didn't realize
they were coming, or maybe you'veforgot to check diary or this sort of
stuff and you suddenly have that madpanic. Even the most organized people,
you know, this is something that'sreally common. You know, it's just
(01:30):
like, oh my gosh, Iforgot this is happening, quick tiedy up
whatever reason. Or maybe you knowyou've not felt very well today and you
just want to get the house lookingreasonable before you go to sleep, and
you just need a quick, short, sharp shock for the house. So
this is some things that you cando. So the number one is the
(01:53):
basket. The basket dash. Thisis one of my favorite things. I
will caution this with make sure youuse a basket. My mum had to
do one of these quick tide upones when we were selling one of our
houses once and somebody saw the forsale sign and they didn't make an appointment
with the estate agent. They justcame and knocked on the door and my
(02:14):
mom was like, oh, yeah, yeah, come in. So as
my dad was showing them around likethe living room, she was doing this
in the kitchen and she was juststuffing things in the argo, which to
be fair, we never used. And then she went back a few weeks
later to find like shriveled things. So if you are going to be stuffing
things in a basket, you needto commit to yourself that they're not going
to languish there forever. So graba basket, bin or any other type
(02:37):
of large container and zip through yourmain living spaces and you the idea is
scooping up anything that doesn't belong. But you need to make promise yourself to
redistribute later because otherwise you're just creatinga little waiting room. You're just creating
another pile of clutter. So toyson the kitchen table, in the basket,
she's in the living room basket. Some people I know have a basket
(02:59):
for each room. So it's aquestion of this is the stuff that lives
in this room usually, but Ihaven't got enough time for it to go
to its normal home in this room, So it's just going to stay here
in this basket. And I knowthat it will still be in this room
when I need it, but theroom is going to look half decent.
So it could be that you havea basket, a big basket. This
(03:22):
is what we used to do whenthe kids were little and they had like
toys, and stuff. Now they'reall about the tech, all about the
gadgets. We'd have a massive basketin the living room, which we have
actually repurposed to a basket that livesin the utility room now where we put
all school bags in that sort ofthing, scooping up all toys, pop
popping them in the basket because youknow, you can sit there and you
can make your toy room or yourplayroom or your living room or wherever you
(03:45):
store your toys really organized. Butas soon as those kids come in,
they're like little MANI tornadoes, aren'tthey They will just destroy the whole lot.
So this isn't about necessarily organization. It's about cleaning surfaces and cleaning floors.
And you will be amazed at howmuch neat are everything thing looks when
that clutter is kind of corralled intoone one space. I want to talk
(04:05):
to him about a kitchen tip aswell. So if your kitchen is looking
cluttered, one of the really easiestways to make this kitchen or your kitchen
look cleaner than it actually is.And this sounds so simple, but it's
to clear the drain like the drainingboard like next to the sink, wherever
you put. If your sink isfree of dishes, it's going to make
(04:29):
your kitchen look ten times better. So it's all about visually making the house
look tidier. The next thing youcan do is a really speedy surface clean
or sweet. So grab a microfibercloth. You'll know that I absolutely love
damp dusting, and give your surfacesa quick one saver. Now I would
(04:50):
go for the main engine rooms inyour home here, especially if you're going
to have visitors, so you don'tnecessarily need to do the guest room,
kitchen, dining room, maybe thedownstairs loof people are going to go in
there, and the living room,so giving your surfaces a quick one sofa.
Any surfaces that catch the eye, don't aim for perfection. Aim for
(05:13):
a crumb free, relatively shiny view. Here it's kind of lo This is
like kind of putting on mascara andlipstick and you've got no time for a
full face of makeup. So it'slike a heart. You know it's doing
like fifty percent, but you lookinstantly better, you feel instantly better.
And a top tip here as wellis if you have got people who are
going to come round and you knowthat they're probably going to be using the
(05:35):
downstairs loop. Shine your taps andclean your mirror if you've got time.
If they look shiny, they canfool people into thinking that that bathroom is
actually a lot cleaner than it actuallyis. Another really good tip. We're
whipping through these. Another really goodtip is your sofa. So fluff pillows,
straightened throws. A tidy sofa invitesrelaxation. It makes the whole living
(06:00):
room just look more organized. It'syour living room's equivalent of making your bed.
Pay some attention to that and everythingjust looks better. This is so
true for me. In my livingroom. We've got throws on our sofa
because we've got two dogs. Welive in the muddiest part of Kent that
you could possibly imagine, so obviouslyI'm taking my dogs out for a walk
(06:25):
every day. We're you know,we're going through fields and there's small dogs
as well. Rockies are quite asmall jack russell, so he just gets
covered in mud. And we've gota white sofa, so we've got throws
on the sofa, and just straighteningthose throws can make the living room look
It just elevates it, It liftsit and going back to the bathroom.
(06:46):
Bathroom, Your bathroom, especially ifyou've got guests, that can look a
bit scary, So grab a dampcloth, get your all purpose cleaner.
Don't forget if you are cleaning theloop to use a different cloth to your
sink, and you'll hit the highvisibility areas first mirror, sink taps.
You're not deep clean. And rememberthis is just getting it look as good
(07:09):
as possible, as presentable as possible, in the shortest amount of time.
Going back to the analogy of likestraightening your throw in the living room,
it's kind of like making your bedin the bedroom. This is like brushing
your hair or putting it into amumbon. It is quick, easy and
effective, and it just helps justto deal with the surface problems. And
(07:32):
finally, especially this is very importantif you've got dogs or that sort of
thing. If you've got some timeleft, grab your vacuum cleaner or or
a brush or whatever, call usvacuum. Focus on the main walkways that
this is what we say all thetime, don't we in the level ones.
Focus on the main traffic areas.Don't worry about getting into the nooks
and crannies or understuff, hit themost obvious spots. It's going to make
(07:57):
again elevate everything and look everything alot cleaner than it actually is. And
in just if you follow those basicsteps and move fast, that's the key.
In just like ten to fifty minutes, you've managed you can make your
space feel so much calmer and moreinviting. But remembering that this is not
about deeply deep cleaning or reorganizing yourentire home, So whilst you're doing this,
(08:18):
don't get distracted, don't get stuckin the weeds. It's about the
quick winds that are going to makethe big difference. And we say all
the time, don't we that whenyou and your brain sees that difference,
it gets a lovely dopamine. Hereyou've seen some progress. So this is
especially important on those days when you'rejuggling a million things. It's going to
tick off that thing you're and tofeel a sense of accomplishment is going to
(08:41):
give you a boost of self esteem. Because it's not about having a picture
perfect home, is it. It'sabout creating a home where you and your
family can relax and enjoy your life. And these quick cleanup tips are just
the ticket for the days when youjust you've got more important things to focus
on, because there is more tolife and housework, isn't there. And
also it's a really good way totrick guests into thinking you've you're cleaner and
(09:07):
tighter than you actually already are.So I hope that's helped. If you
are feeling overwhelmed by the chaos, now set that timer, give it a
go, and don't forget there areguided bite sized cleans over in the Tom
Rocks vaults. So if you're like, no, I need you to talk
me through it, Jem, thenthey are ready and waiting for you now.
