Hello, and welcome back to anotherepisode of The Organized Mom Show. I'm
your host, Gemma, and I'mhere to hold your hand through all of
the life admin the housework, thework work, self care, to do
lists, relationships, and everything elsethe one hundred and one things that you
might be trying to fit into yourday to day. So, without further
(00:26):
ado, let's dive into today's topic. Hi everybody, welcome back to the
Organized Well my hope where if youare in the world, you're happy,
healthy and well. Shall we talkabout the benefits that come along with having
a clean and tidy home. Thesevery often get overlooked. I think sometimes
like when you're looking at people wholike they like it tidy, they like
it neat, they're an a typepersonality you can be like. It can
(00:51):
seem a bit one dimensional, butthere are so many benefits that come along
with having a clean and organized home. Is kind of like you get a
lot of bang for your book.So if you're having a little bit of
a wabble, maybe your goal oftwenty twenty four was to really get a
handle on the housework, get intoa really good healthy housekeeping habit, and
maybe January is hitting you hard. And you know it's just the housework.
(01:17):
I'm here to sort of gently persuadeyou to sort of get back to it,
because it isn't just about the housework. It's so much more than that.
It's so much more about tidying andcleaning. It's about the things.
It's about the things that come asa result of that effort. Now,
obviously, if you've been here forany length of time, you will know
that when I talk about having aclean, tidy, and organized home,
I am not talking about a homethat's show homeworthy or pinterest worthy. We
(01:41):
are very much here about balance, you know, functional family homes that can
be used without you know, yourunning behind everyone replumping the cushions, did
you know what the name? Andwe don't strive for perfection. We strive
for balance here, compartmentalizing the houseworkso that you can get on with the
more fun stuff. But when wedo do the housework, we want it
quality housework, quality cleaning, sothat we can get as many benefits as
(02:07):
possible in the shortest amount of time. Now, one of the very first
benefit we're going to go in with, a really obvious one, is how
many of us like when you've sortof got a little bit behind you the
housework. Maybe you've been sick oryou know, things are in busy at
work, whatever, and things haverun away with you a little bit.
And there's like dishes in the sink, there's stuff all over the countertops,
(02:27):
and you just like can't think straight, can't think straight, don't know where
to start. Maybe you need tofinish your report for work, so you're
working it down on your table. You've got your laptop out, and you've
got in the corner of your eitherthose dishes that need doing, and you
can't focus. For me personally, and I know for lots of you as
well, the ability to focus onceyour house is done is so much more.
It's greater that you can focus better, you can get into things because
(02:51):
you can relax knowing that the houseworkis done. So the first benefit is
that you can just ticket ticket offyour mental load. You can stop it
draining the battery. The way Ilike to envisage this is if you think
about like a big stovetop, right, like maybe a six ring burn,
and you've got all these different potsthat you are dealing in life, right,
So you've got work, pop, relationship, pop, parenting, self
(03:15):
care, keeping, fit, thatsort of thing, housework. They're all
in their different source pants, andyou've got the most important source pans,
the priority source pans right here atthe front. You know, work,
family, this sort of thing, and the other stuff just keeps getting pushed
to the back burner, right thehousework, self care and that sort of
thing. But they're still there. You can still see them. They're still
bubbling away, and if you don'tpay attention to them, they can bubble
(03:38):
over, which then has a knockon effect on all of these really important
things that you need to keep tendingto on the stovetop. So that's how
I look at it. If youcan switch that pan off because you've done
the housework, switch that pan offbecause you've been for your morning walk,
get those two off, your mentalloads, off your burner, off your
stovestop, it can help you focuson the more important things. So that
(03:59):
is benefit one, being able tojust ticket off your list so you can
get on with the more important stuff. Benefit number two is if you are
the sort of person that gets stressedout about a messy house, it's going
to reduce your stress levels. Socleaning can actually be good stress and I
know I laugh, but it isso true. Like I feel so much
better when my house is done.I'm a happier person, I'm a calmer
(04:24):
person, I'm less shouty, I'mless agitated. So a massive key benefit
for me is it makes me abetter wife. Makes me and I don't
mean this in like a you know, nineteen fifties wife way. I mean
like, it just makes me anicer person. I'm more patient. I've
not got one eye or it's notin the back of my mind that I've
got to do this. I'm notrushing through the homework with Ben. I'm
(04:45):
not, you know, half listeningto a conversation because the other half of
my brain is thinking about all lotthe housework that I've got to do today.
So it makes me less stressed,it makes me less anxious, and
it just makes me nicer to bearound. Another key benefit for me is
it actually helped to boost my productivityand also my creativity. I don't like
doing the housework. This is theirony of my life. I actually don't
(05:06):
like doing the housework. I likeliving in a clean home. I don't
like doing the cleaning. But yeah, I talk about it. I talk
about it all the time, Iget interviewed for newspapers, I has to
go on TV about it. Allof this stuff, right, cleaning,
cleaning, cleaning each other, thecleaning lady. In fact, someone I
was walking to school the other dayand someone waited at me and was like,
oh, well, there's a ladythat talks about cleaning. Yeah,
that's me. It's such a glamorousjob. But when it's done, my
(05:29):
productivity everywhere else rises because again it'sticked off that to do list, and
I don't feel like I'm spreading myselfreally, really thinly. And that's the
beauty of having a housework routine, like the Organized One method. If you
haven't tried it yet, go tothe link. Go to If you haven't
tried it yet, go to thewebsite. You can download the print outs
for free and that you can seeif it suits you and your family.
(05:49):
And if you're like, yeah, this is great, this is working,
then we also have the organized Momapp that you can tweak and you can
make it a custom and you cancustomize it to see your house and you
and if you need a little bitof extra handholding and motivation, there are
guided cleaning sessions and also a littlemini cleaning challenges over on the tom Rock
section as well. So by havinga routine, by knowing, hey,
(06:11):
don't you worry about that? Youknow, when that little voice in your
brain goes, why am I goingto get around to that, it's like,
it's fine. The organized one methodhas got it covered. Gem has
written me a plan. You canthen focus and be more productive at work.
You can be more creative if youhave a creative job. That is
a massive benefit for me as well. If I get the job, knowing
that it is done is a massive, massive boost for the other parts of
(06:33):
my life and for a lot ofus as well. It can feel like
if you're in control of your home, you feel a little bit more in
control of the rest of your life. So the example I always use here
is your kitchen in the morning,so you go to bed and you haven't
necessarily done the dishes after dinner.Maybe there's a soak you you cooked to
stew or a cast roll or something, and you've left the saucepan to soa
(06:56):
and it's still there. In themorning when you come downstairs, cold dirty
water immediately puts you in a badmood because before you've even started today,
you're dealing with yesterday's issues, somuch better to be a future friend.
The concept we talked about that andget it done the night before, because
when you come down the next morning, you're going to feel more in control,
you're going to be calmer, you'regoing to be ready to tackle the
day, tackle the world, andyou're not going to feel like you are
(07:18):
on the back flop. That's goingto give you a boost in self esteem.
It's going to make you feel moreconfident. And what do we always
say, The brain loves progress, right. The brain is happy when we
tick things off. So something issimple as ticking off some to do list,
something as simple as ticking off yourcleaning to do list. If you're
following on long on the app,it's going to give you a little bit
(07:41):
of a boost. It's going togive you a teen boat dopamine hit,
and it's going to make you happy, which is going to boost yourself confidence.
And it can be a lovely upwardspiral. And just doing something as
simple as two or three cleaning jobscan really help to lift your mood.
Another thing I think that is overlookedis that cleaning can actually be a way
(08:01):
of self nurturing and also kind ofself care. And I know I also
say, you know, I joke. We all joke. We've all seen
that meme, right, Like theclothes I've ever going to get to a
spa is owtly buddish for sure, and the steam like hits me in the
face. I don't mean like that. What I mean is by taking care
of your environment, by making surethat your environment is as cluttered free as
possible, is as clean as possible, like even just from a hygienic point
(08:24):
of view, is a way ofnurturing yourself. You're making your life easier
for all those reasons that we've alreadyspoken about. And you're putting yourself and
your home and the environment in whichyou live, but like not first,
but like as a priority. Andthat's really important because that is going to
help you establish healthy habits. Andif you were stablish and if you were
(08:45):
trying to establish like numerous healthy habits, maybe you are trying to get into
fitness, maybe you want to bea little bit mindful about you know,
what you're eating, that sort ofthing you're nutrition. Those can be like
quite tricky, they're much those canfeel trickier to get a handle on.
So doing something like the housework isgoing to give you a boosting confidence because
you've already established one healthy habit andit means you're more likely to carry on
(09:07):
and do the others, especially ifyou do the housework first thing in the
morning. Right, If do thehousework in the morning, and then it
sort of sets you up for therest of the day on a positive you've
had that dop'mean hit in your brain, you've tipped off some of your to
do lists, and it has agood chance then that's going to put you
and it's a good chance that you'regoing to then start the day off on
the right foot and continue with healthyhabits. And finally sleep and relaxation and
(09:30):
rest. This is so so important. This is such a massive heart of
just one general well being. Beingable to sleep and relax in the evening
after you come home from work orafter you put the kids to bed and
you just want to sit down andrelax or you want to go to sleep.
If you've got a bedroom that's clutterfree, there isn't a floordrobe on
the floor, you know, there'sno clothes everywhere. It's it's going to
(09:50):
make sure that the downtime you have, especially if you're someone that is bothered
by mess and feel stressed by mess, is quality downtime. Clutter free bedrooms
a lovely space to walk into,a nice, cluttered free living room so
that you can enjoy your evening, make yourself a cup of tea, what's
your favorite film without having the houseworkgnawing at the brack of your brain.
And if you're thinking missus all welland good, I mean this woman,
(10:13):
she's she's right, But how amI supposed to you actually make all these
things happen? I've got so muchon my mental load, there's so much
to do. How and am II am just one person supposed to make
this happen? Well, first ofall, if you can get the people
living in your home helping you, because you're not the only one making the
mess, and kind of guess it, it's a sure buyer. I'm pretty
(10:35):
certain that everyone else you live withis creating mess as well, So where
possible, delegate go back to thatpoint that I'll be a happier person and
much nicer to live with if wetackle this as a tea download the Organized
Mum app or if you not ready, to do that yet. Go to
the website, download the print outs. They're free, Stick them on your
fridge. Take it out of yourbrain, like what is it they do
(10:58):
in Harry Potter where they get theirwonder and they take all of the memories
out. Do that with the housework, stick it on your fridge, and
then it becomes a whole family thing, not just you ticking through in the
back of your brains that you havea Oh, I don't suppose you could
help me do this. None ofthat conversation. It's there, it's on
the fridge, it's written down,it's factual. You can tick it off,
people can tick it off, andit opens up that housework conversation.
(11:20):
And if you are following the Organizedon method, you know we do not
strive for perfection here. We arestriving for a home that is functional,
that is as clutter free as possible, whilst recognizing that people still live there,
okay, and also recognizing that becausepeople live in our home, mess
will mess will appear, which ispart of household life. And also knowing
that if you do thirty minutes ofcleaning today like we do in the Organized
(11:41):
Mum, like Monday to Friday, there will be more cleaning to do tomorrow.
So it is absolutely no point youwasting your whole evening or your whole
Saturday cleaning when it's just going tocome back again tomorrow on Sunday or the
next day. So do what youcan today, do the best with your
time and energy that you have available. Hopefully just doing that one thing those
thirty minutes, we'll sprinkle. Itwill sprinkle the rest of your day with
(12:05):
all of these benefits that we've spokenabout today. If you haven't already made
