(00:04):
Hello, and welcome back to anotherepisode of The Organized Mom Show. I'm
your host, Jemma, and I'mhere to hold your hand through all of
the life admin the housework, thework work, self care, to do
lists, relationships, and everything else, the one hundred and one things that
you might be trying to fit intoyour day to day. So, without

(00:26):
further ado, let's dive into today'stopic. Hello, everybody should talk about
laundry hacks and cheats, the Internet'sbest kept secret. So I've been trawling
the internet now I see a lotof these hacks and stuff like as I'm
going around my daily business over onTikTok, you know, chronically online as

(00:47):
I am, and I want youto talk them through with you, just
to see if you know you've triedthem, maybe like, oh yeah,
that's a really good idea. Sowe're going to talk about the never ending
cycle of washing, drying, folding, repeating, you know, the piles,
the piles that exist. Laundry isthe bane of so many people's lives.

(01:08):
The washing. I'm the only femalein the house, right The washing
is immense. It's immense, andsometimes like Michael come home from work and
he's like when I went up forwork this morning, you were stood by
the washing machine, and I'm backand you're still here. I'm like,
yeah, I know, I know. So I'm always on the lookout for
like little hints and tips that aregoing to make my life easier. These

(01:30):
aren't going to stop you from havingto do the laundry, by the way,
but just total, you know, transparency, they might make your life
a little bit easier. So let'sget started. Firstly, we have got
what happens when you do the thingthat we all do. Maybe you've popped

(01:51):
your stuff in the tumble dryer andyou don't take it out as soon as
it dings right, so you fitthe cycle finishes in the dryer, and
you may be you or busy doingsomething else work in you're on a zoom
call or whatever, or maybe youfeed your baby and you just completely forget
to take it out of the dryerand it kind of bakes in the creases,
doesn't It bakes the creases in,which means you're like, you're in

(02:13):
the situation you take everything out ofyour dryer. You have two choices.
You ei the iron it who likesthat? Or you re wash it awful
waste of energy orful waste of time. But I've got something that could potentially
stop that from happening. There's twothings that you can do. You can
get an ice cube and you canpop it in the tumble dryer. The

(02:36):
heat and the steam, so theheat will create steam, right and it
needs to be on for a fewminutes and the steam will just to help
those ring calls increases to drop out. Another thing that you can do if
you don't feel confident using a icecube, it can be a damp flannel
or a damp towel. So addingsomething with water or moisture in it is

(03:00):
going to release steam. It's goingto make everything slightly damp again, which
means those creases are going to hopefullyfall out, and then what you've got
to do is remember to take themout on time. Otherwise you got stuck
in this never ending cycle and you'llrun out of ice cubes. Another thing
that you can do on the otherend is if you have got a garment
that isn't quite dry yet and youneed to leave you need to leave the

(03:23):
house, you can take that garmentand you can put like the ever so
slightly damped garment and get a drygarment. Dry towels are perfect for this.
And put the dry towel in withthe damp thing that you need to
dry quicker. It's going to dryfaster, it's going to increase the drying
speed. So those are two thingsthat you can do if you get stuck
in a tumble dryer model. Thenext thing on the list is the sock

(03:46):
dilemma. So I mentioned I livewith quite a lot of people, all
boys, apart from Maikusa man right. So you put a pair of socks
in the watch. They've all gotthe same types of socks for school and
work. They've all got similar sizedfeet, apart from Ben who's only eight.
So I am constantly stuck in thiswhose sock is this situation until a
few years ago I came up withmy own solution that we use as a

(04:11):
family. I gave every single persona laundry net, a sock net,
and I said, your pants andyour socks go in here. Now,
the key here is not to fillit up too full, because obviously you
still want the garments in the waterto be able to swish around and actually
clean them. Smelly socks need toget clean, right, So the individual
the owner of the wearer of thepants and the socks will put the sock

(04:31):
basket, the laundry net in thewashing basket, color code them so you
know who who's right. That goesin the washing machine. It can also
go in the tumble dry. Youhand it back to the person there in
charge of bailing their own socks andputting them away. So you're saving yourself
time because you're not having to ballSOCKX. Who's got time for that.
And also you're not losing socks. And also you're not stuck in a game

(04:55):
of sock concentration trying to work outwhich sock belongs to which person who lives
in your It is such a gamechange, I promise you once you start
doing it, you'll never go back. And also, if you've got delicates,
I think perfect to stop them gettingsnagged and things like that in the
washing machine as well. Another thingthat I hear people lament about very often
is smelly clothes. Now this isa little bit scientific, but you've ever

(05:19):
had this situation where you get mustthat musty smell. Main culprit of this
is jeans and towels, And thisis because so you've washed them they've gone
through the whole laundry cycle path, they don't smell clean. They smell dirty
than when they went in and you'llknow the smell. I mean this is
because heavier fabrics like denim, liketowels, take longer to dry, and

(05:43):
if they are languishing sort of likeon a close era in a room it's
winter, maybe the heating's not onand the house is a little bit dam
and they're not drying quick enough, and that is what creates the smell.
So the absolute key here to getthese clothes not smelling, to keep them
smelling fresh, is to get themdry as quickly as possible. And one

(06:04):
of the best ways to do thisis if you do have heavier fabrics and
maybe you don't have a washing lineor you don't you know, it's not
it's not the weather's not suitable forputting the clothes on the washing line.
Is to put your washing machine onfor an extra spin at the end of
a cycle. Usually takes an extraten to fifteen minutes, but it gets
so much more water and moisture outof those heavier fabrics. It's going to

(06:27):
help them dry a lot quicker. And another thing you can use is those
dry bodies that you can get fromplaces like Lakeland, and you can get
them all over Amazon. That sortof thing which they are essentially like a
heater that is underneath like a clotheshanger, kind of looks a bit like
a dalic, and then you putthis fabric cover over the top, which

(06:47):
means the heat stays all in oneplace and it helps to dry the clothes
really really fast. And when Ididn't use my tumbel dry at all,
so when we were renovating the healthyou didn't really have anywhere, I use
one of the and it really didhelp to speed those speed the drying up
of clothes a lot quicker, Iwould say than having them in the dryer.
And also the main benefit is becausethey are on hangers, it doesn't

(07:11):
matter. It doesn't matter if youdon't necessarily have time to get it all
away. One say, foot andis drying because they are already hung up.
And another culprit for having so manyclothes is you got to make sure
that your washing machine is kept inreally good conditions. So the really good
ways that you can do this tomaintain this are when you're not using your
washing machine, keep the door everso slightly a jar. That's going to

(07:34):
help the fresh air to circulate,so it's going to stop the washing machine
from smelling damp and developing like adamp smell. Make sure that you regularly
clean in the seal around the washingmachine door as well. And very often
things can get stuck in there too, like if your kids have got like
stuff in their pockets, or liketwo pe coin falls out and land in
this like this the seal, Soit's a really good practice just to check

(07:56):
around there as well, and ona regular basis, make sure you put
your washing machine through a hot washon empty so there's nothing in there on
a hot wash. You can buydesignated washing machine cleaners just to help clean
all the gunk out the pipes.I personally like to use white vinegar.
It just you know, helps toWe live in a hard water area,
so it just helps to give ita really nicer flush food, which means
your washing machine is going to keepworking efficiently, which means it's more likely

(08:20):
to clean your clothes properly, andit's going to stop any nasty smells from
occurring within the machine itself. Anotherreally good tip is ironing. Now you
know It's no secret that I don'tactually like ironing. I hate ironing.
But if you need to iron something, then make sure that you are ironing
your items in heat order. Andwhat I mean by this if you start

(08:43):
off with your delicate items first,so you iron doesn't need to be on
such a high temperature. Start there, and then slowly increase the temperature of
your iron as you go so untilyou get to those items that really need
top level iron heat. This isgoing to stop you wasting your time because
otherwise you're going to be moving inbetween temperature dials on your iron, which
is going to you know, you'regoing to be waiting around for it,

(09:05):
oh my god. And then thenyou're going to be tempted just to dive
straight in with an iron that mightbe too hot, which means you could
potentially be damaging your clothes. Soif you must iron, you know,
I know there are some ie thatthat actually like it, But if you
must, then a real top tipis to start off with the items that
need the lowest temperature and then justslowly work your weight up. So there

(09:26):
you have it. It's just areally quick whizz through a sum of mine

hates just a little bit less daunting. I'd love to hear your thoughts and
any hacks you swear by, sodrop us a message over on our socials
