Hey Deadtime Storians I wanted to share some sad news with all of you. Unfortunately we lost a very close friend to our personal family as well as the Deadtime Stories family this weekend. On Sunday Tracy Zales, our friend and theme song composer passed away. She was one of the kindest souls on this planet and we are absolutely devastated by the news. In honor of Tracy, I wanted to re-run the first episode we used her music for. Rest in peace my friend.

New Orleans is full of history, ghost stories, and true crime. The case of Zack Bowen and Addie Hall is perhaps the city's most infamous crime but the tales about the couple told late at night by ghost tours through the French Quarter don't come anywhere close to examining the couple's full story.

Written by Schuyler Fastenau-Jones and executive produced by Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Additional voices by Walker Barnes, Taylor Shurte, Tamara Perry, Jordan Katcher, Allyn Anthony Moriyon, Marissa Pistone, Jeremy Staple, Matt MacNelly, and Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Cover artwork by Catherine Fastenau. Theme music by Tracy Zales. Sound recording by Chelsea Bray.

(00:00):
Hey, Deadtime Story Ends. It'sSkyler Fasten out Jones here, the host
and creator of the original Deadtime Stories. I know it's been quite some time
since we last spoke to each otherwith new content. This past year has
been pretty rough so far, andunfortunately I felt the need to jump in

(00:22):
this week to give you an updatethat I really never want to give anybody.
Unfortunately, this past weekend, welost somebody very important to the not
only the Dead Time Stories family, but my personal family and a lot of

(00:42):
my close friends as well. TracyZailes, who is not only a wonderful
human being, but wrote and createdour theme music as well as the theme
music for our other podcast, CocktailBallerina, passed away this past Sunday,
and I just kind of wanted tojump in let all of you know,

(01:03):
because she is somebody who was sucha beautiful person, a beautiful kind soul,
always so respectful and kind to me, the first person to reach out
and make sure that you know, she knew that if you needed a friend,
she was there. A couple ofyears ago, she randomly texted myself

(01:26):
and my husband, Daniel Fastonel Jones, just letting us know, Hey,
I have this file here, youguys totally don't have to use it.
I just got inspired this weekend andwanted to just put together a little something
for Dead Time Stories, and itwas our theme music. And after listening

(01:49):
to it once, I said, this is perfect. This is amazing.
This is the most beautiful thing thatanybody's ever done for me. Just out
of the kindness of her heart, she just created our theme music. And
it's been hard for me to saygoodbye, and I just kind of felt

(02:13):
the need to pay my respects toher and whatever way I could. And
the first thing that I thought ofwas just kind of letting all of you
know, I'm just kind of puttingit out there that we lost a wonderful,
amazing person this weekend. And thisis probably one of the closest people

(02:35):
to me that I've ever had tosay goodbye too. So it's been a
lot for me to process. Butone of the things that I've just learned
is to just never take life forgranted. You would think that running a
true crime podcast, I would learnthat by now, but I guess having
something so close to home happen changesyour perspective on things. So life is

(03:00):
precious and just make sure that youtell your loved ones how much you love
them and how important they are toyou, because you just you never know
what's going to happen. Life canthrow a lot at us, So take
care of yourselves, make sure thatyour loved ones know that you love them,

(03:22):
and make sure that you know thatyou love yourself. Take good care
of yourself. And for Tracy,I do want to get back into things,
keep pushing. Like I said, this past year has been rough for
me and I've kind of put deadtimes in my other podcasts on hold,
so out of respect for Tracy andthe work that she put into this podcast,

(03:44):
I want to get back into researchingand keep making content for you guys,
So hopefully we can be back witheach other soon. But in the
meantime, I wanted to leave youguys with our first episode where we used
her music, and so give ita listen. And Tracy, we all
love you so so much and thankyou for being one of the kindest,

(04:09):
most beautiful souls ever to walk thisearth. Love you. New Orleans' French

(05:08):
Quarter was in the midst of apleasant sunny afternoon on October seventeenth, two
thousand and six. Guess that TheOmni Royal Orleans Hotel, cooled off from
the seventy seven degree day with agentle breeze. On the seventh floor rooftop
bar, a live band played asthey enjoyed drink after drink. One man
stood by the bar with a cigarettequivering in his fingers. Another check on

(05:31):
the rocks. Brother, Yeah, make it a double. He'd been there
since about four o'clock. It wasnearly eight now, three books. Leave
the tab open? Yeah, man, thanks. He slowly sipped the drink
between pubs of his cigarette, andthen walked up the concrete steps to a
viewing platform that looked out over theMississippi. The band finished their last number

(05:58):
and started to pack up. Guestshad closed their tabs for the evening as
it was starting to get chilly andBourbon Street was calling, but one check
was still open and the owner wasn'tin sight. The bartender turned to the
band, Hey, Bud, yousee that taga You know, the one
six foot million blond hair. Theband leader frowned, shook his head,

(06:19):
and walked to the elevator. Danasshole skip paying fine, lucky drunk.
The curious bartender walked to the railingto see what the commotion was. A
man appeared to be passed out inthe street. That wouldn't be terribly uncommon

(06:42):
in New Orleans, but there wasa slight problem. That's the fucking parking
garage roof gud must have phone fofloors. Somebody called the front desk,
who notified police, and soon DetectiveTom Morovitch Junior and his team roped off
this scene. Yep, he's atwenty nine s all right code first suicide.

(07:05):
It was a clean death. Otherthan twisted hips and a small pottle
of blood, not much damage wasdone. Hold on, well, it's
this. Detective Morovitch reached into thecorpse's front pocket and retrieved an envelope and
set of dog tags. On thefront of the envelope was a note police

(07:25):
size only. Huh, this isno accident. Wait is this a joke?
Guys talking about another corpse on NorthRamp. This simple suicide was about
to take a turn into true crimelegend. Welcome to the third season of
Dead Time Stories. Zach Bowen wasan awkward teenager, taller than all of

(08:15):
his classmates, with large feet andbaby fat. His mom, Laurie smiled
from the kitchen as he trudged intotheir small home. There's my homecoming king.
Nope, didn't get it. Igot nervous and made an ass out
of myself. He slumped into hisseat and grabbed a cookie with a frown.
My grade shuck, and everyone knowsI'm a clown. I should live

(08:35):
a dad for a while. Ineed to reset. Oh no, Zach,
your dad's a loser. He's notthe role model you need. Laurie's
ex husband, Jack was often betweenjobs and rarely saw Zach or his brother
Jed. He divorced Laurie in nineteenninety, but this didn't deter Zack from
moving in with him and living anomadic life feet. Ultimately, Zach ended

(08:58):
up in New Orleans, and whileschool didn't work out for him, his
body finally did. Zach was nolonger a teenager with baby fat. He
was a hunk, and bar managersknew that he could easily rope in customers.
Next thing Zach knew he was passingdrinks to tourists through the go cup
windows enter Lana's shoepack. Hey y'allwant a hanger Knight? Happy hour prices

(09:22):
rut in side? Oh, howmuch are you during happy hours, Zach
blushed as the woman waked. Threedays later, the eighteen year old found
himself on a date with the twentyeight year old. Of course, at
the time, Lana didn't know Zachwas barely legal. So you live in
here traveling, I'll learned rat quickhow to be a stripper and nailed down

(09:43):
the peak seasons of topless bars acrossthe country. You ever consider staying.
Lana looked into his big eyes andnervously brushed her hair back. Poor go,
I don't know he's a thing.It would take several pleading phone calls,
but Laana eventually moved to New Orleans. When she found out how much

(10:05):
older she was than Zach, shestarted to have second thoughts. But then
ship she found out she was pregnant. Laana kept the news from Zach for
a while, afraid the young fatherwould run, and it was a fair
fear to have because Zach was trulyconflicted. Hello, hey, mom,

(10:28):
I'm going to cut to the chase. Remember that stripper, Well, she's
pregnant. I know it really messedthings up after dropping out of school and
stuff, but I don't know whatto do. I don't know what to
tell you, honey, either youstay and help her raise it or leave
now and forever wonder what became ofit. I'll stay and pick up another
gig so she has money. Ilove your mom will be On July thirteenth,

(10:54):
nineteen ninety seven, Jackson was born. Zach kept his promise and picked
up a job with benefits. Healso made space for Lana and the baby
in his apartment, but wanted todo more. One night, as the
couple on wound, Zach turned toLaana and said, you want health insurance.
If we're married, I can giveyou insurance. Zach and Lawna tied

(11:20):
the knot on October tenth, nineteenninety eight, in Jackson Square, and
it wasn't a moment too soon either, as they found out right before the
wedding that they were expecting another child. Their daughter, Lily, was born
on June twelfth, nineteen ninety nine. Zach rubbed his eyes as he dropped
another utility bill. He had earneda ged, but knew he needed to

(11:43):
do something other than bartend Oh,what's on your mind, handsome? What
if I enlisted in the army,Think about a babe, I'd get better
benefits and it's not like there's awar or anything. It was settled,
and soon Zach shipped out to Geeseand Germany. Zach was placed in the

(12:05):
five hundred and twenty seventh and lovedit. Being a musician, he often
played music for his comrades. WhoWars five hundred twenty seventh's being sent to
Kosovo effect of January tenth peacekeeping mission. Kosovo was dramatically different than Gieson.
Although Zach tried to keep spirits high, it was hard. While uncovering mass

(12:28):
graves in spring two thousand and one, Zach was on patrol when a curious
Albanian girl approached him. WHOA,hey there you hungry? Yeah, my
mom sent me this. Zach candidthe little girl a candy bar and watched
as she skipped off. A Serbianofficer watched her too. Zach patrolled again

(13:03):
the next day. Ah shit, damn, boots are too small, he
winced as he took off the shoes. That's the worst case at Hammer too,
I've ever seen I'm sure all sheworse than this. You've seen that
little girl today. She's always playingout here. The soldier went pale.
They didn't tell you some Albanian murderedher whole family. I guess she was

(13:28):
seen with an American. Oh,I mean she interacted with all of us.
Don't beat yourself up. Naturally. This messed with Zach and he grew
much more reserved. In May,the five hundred and twenty seventh returned to
Geeson, where Zach received hammer toesurgery. It was a welcomed gift when
they sent him back to New Orleansto recover. Bean Home gave Zach the

(13:52):
chance to convince Laana to file thetransfer paperwork so the family could join him
in Geeson. Once his recovery wasover, Laana, Jack and Lily joined
him in Germany. Good Morning Americawas in progressed in the East Coast and

(14:13):
the Midwest, but were joined bythe entire network. Just to show you
some pictures at the foot of NewYork City. This is at the World
Trade Center. Obviously a major firethere and there has been some sort of
explosion. We don't fully know thedetails. There's one report, as yet
unconfirmed, that a plane has hitthe World Trade Center. There is look.

(14:37):
God said, come look at thisside of the building. Oh my
god, it looks like a secondplane. It's just hit. When Zach
and Lana heard about the September eleventhattacks, they were terrified and confused.
Lana's stomach churned when President Bush announcedthat America was going to war with a

(15:00):
and the five hundred and twenty seventhwould be the first shipped out. It
was a long journey, but bythe summer of two thousand and three,
Zach found himself in Saddam Hussein's abandonedpalace. Zach wentz to see massage to
foot. Here's our guy, luckybastard. You wouldn't believe the places I
got sand in today. Zach gavea weary smile as his friend Rachel Bosfeld

(15:24):
entered hammerto bag and over again.Yeah, so much for surgery. I'm
tired of being there back office, bitch. I want to get out there
with the rest of the gang.Well, those are the bricks, get
it. Got a letter for you. It looks like it's from your lady
friends, Zach. I've developed hepatitisy. I could be treated in Geyson,

(15:48):
but recovery will make it hard totake care of the kids. The road
Cross and my doctor have sent lettersto your commanding officer encouraging him to discharge
you. Please do what you can. I need you, Lana. Zach
stumbled outside and explained the situation tohis superiors. Sorry, Bowen, but
the answer is no, we needyou more than she does. Zach slumped
down and tried not to show hisemotions, but jumped as a small hand

(16:12):
tapped his shoulder. When he openedhis eyes, an Iraqi boy was staring
at him. What's this coca cola? The boy's family poked their heads out
of their store, and the wifemotioned for Zach to drink. Thank you.
This happened repeatedly. In an exchangefor the boy's kindness, Zach taught

(16:32):
him English. For the moment,it was a brief period of joy,
and then who was all stripped away? In late October, Rachel became the
victim of a mortar attack, andshortly after the Iraqi family who brought Zach
Zoda perished when their home was blownup. When Zach returned to Geese in

(16:56):
that November, he was a changedand it's all a joke. There aren't
weapons of mass destruction. Everything happensfor a reason. Why the fuck was
I left behind? Why my friendswere killed? If I wasn't needed,
then they should let me come takecare of you. Zach found that his
passion for the army was gone andthought that his only way out was to

(17:18):
fail his PT tests. Oh,when you've been performing below the below average
percentile for nearly a year. Now, that is why we are giving you
a general discharge under honorable conditions. Then I don't get health benefits. Zach
felt himself tumbling downhill. Not onlydid he feel responsible for the loss of
close friends, but now his reasonfor joining the army was dashed away.

(17:41):
Too. Furious that Zach wouldn't giveher a straightforward answer about the discharge,
Lana returned to New Orleans ahead ofhim. Zach joined her in December two
thousand and four, and Lana didn'twaste time telling him it's over. I'm
seeing someone new. Zach had ahard time wrapping his head around the fact

(18:03):
that Lana just didn't want to bewith him anymore, and, in his
defense, the couple never even officiallydivorced. So Zach grew his hair out
then once again became a bartender. When Zach arrived late for his shift,
Addie Hall, the girl he wasreplacing, rolled her eyes. That fucking

(18:25):
time New gay let me make itup to you. I could buy you
a few shots tomorrow. Addie floppedher dirty rag down on the bar and
shrugged, I'll think about it.Zach took her spot behind the bar as
the second bartender chuckled, don't worry. She gives guys. She likes hale.
It's her tiss to see whether youcan handle her or not. Zach

(18:48):
looked out the window and couldn't helpbut grin as the blonde leapt onto her
bike. She caught him staring andsneered as she rode off. I hope
you're an asshole at it on adate? Asshole? It's not the Addie
liked jerks, She just seemed toget stuck with them and found herself in
a never ending cycle of abuse. As a child, she was sexually abused

(19:10):
and had her first uti before thirteen. For all this darkness, Addie tried
to create a light with her fierypersonality. No shit, the drunks really
thought your mannequin was pukin? Suredid. Some guy even massaged her back
until his wife showed up. Whydo you have a mannequin? Anyway?
I liked to show, but Ireally don't want to be a poet and

(19:34):
a dancer. I get it whenI picked up a drumstick, I needed
to be in a band. Zachgently took ADDIE's hand in his and smiled.
For perhaps the first time in awhile, Addie felt safe with Zach
holding her. Okay, there's myfriend caps over here. This is my
boyfriend, Zach, Zach. Thisis Capriccio. Debellis nice to meet you,

(19:56):
man. ADDIE's talking not stop aboutyou? So what are we drinking
a night? Capriccio became a fastfriend for Zach. Perhaps two thousand and
five is going to be the yearfor his life to finally turn around.
Wait a second, can you turnthat TV up? The bartender shrugged and
grabbed the remote as Ray Nagan, who was New Orleans mayor at the time,

(20:17):
stepped behind a podium. Ladies andgentlemen, this is the real deal.
If you have been asleep for aminute, there is a major,
major hurricane that has New Orleans andLouisiana in its sights. Saturday the beginnings
of a math exodus from New Orleans. And while these folks are getting out
of town early, many of theirneighbors to the east and along the Gulf

(20:40):
Coast haven't made up their minds. They're still hoping Katrina will turn I don't
need to share how devastating Hurricane Katrinawas. While most of the city evacuated,

(21:04):
several French Quarter residents chose to staybehind since their homes were spared.
Zach and Daddy were two of theseresidents. Despite the fact that Lana opened
her doors for them, Addie hadno desire to stay with her and Zach
didn't want to leave his new girlfriend. Wow, how much damage other than

(21:25):
a few down tree looms? Sureit is pretty am When was the last
time you saw the French Quarter deserted? To some, they would be ominous
to see a town devoid of life. For Zach and Addy, it was
about to become a glorious camping trip. At the time, they had no
idea that over eighty percent of thecity was underwater, or that more than

(21:47):
eighteen hundred people had died, Andwhile more than twelve thousand residents found themselves
trapped in the superdome, Zach andAddie were building a utopia. Glad we
got the street cleared. Now wehave room for the barbecue. Whoa easy,
Bessy y'all. Hey, swirl, can you join the party? I

(22:10):
brought beer, and as these neighborhoodcookouts became quite common, Katrina was a
prime example of a natural disaster bringingpeople closer together. I think everybody went
home. Zach, should we takeeverything? And sad? Zach turned to
Addie and smiled, You look sexyin the moonlight. Nobody was around to

(22:37):
care if the couple had sex inthe middle of the street, so if
the feeling was right, Zach andAddie would go for it. Wow,
Zach, look at that. Addiepointed up to the heavens. I've never
seen so many stars. It's beautiful. It wasn't all fun and games,

(23:00):
of course, without any type oflaw enforcement, it soon became every person
for themselves. When supplies ran out, Addie and Zach would borrow some from
stores. Since you never knew whoor what you'd encounter, it was always

(23:21):
best to travel in numbers. Waitthere and watch the box. Addie crept
through the aisle, grabbing any cannedgood or beer left when suddenly, quite
Sweetie, your trust passon. That'llcost you. It's been a while since
oh tasted pussy, and you ain'tgetting to today go sick startled, Zach

(23:51):
hopped on his bike and peddled asfast as he could. What happened back
there? It sounded like you screamed, It's nothing, I'm fun Sensing her
hostility, Zach ended the conversation. All right, everyone say get back.
It took six days for officers toshow, and when they finally patrolled the

(24:11):
quarter, Addie ensured her apartment wassafe because she'd flashed the officers before long,
a steady flow of cops passed outsideof her home. Oh no,
what's that noise? When Zach lookedout the window one morning, he saw
army officers patrolling the streets in anattempt to help any holdouts. One officer

(24:32):
looked up and waved, but Zachcouldn't wave back, right, little girl.
Seeing members of the army on hisown street made him nauseous. It
reminded him of what he saw us, his failure in Iraq. My New
Orleans family. Guess the powers back. Ladies and gentlemen, It is safe

(24:53):
to return to your homes. Shit, I don't want him back here.
The mping trip was over on Septembernineteenth, two thousand and five. Residents
returned to the devastated city. Hello, Oh, so I guess you did
survive the storm. I saw thenews article about you and that girl and

(25:17):
thought for sure it wasn't my Zach. Oh no, no, no,
my Zach would have called and checkedif me and his kids needed money.
The kids, okay, I wantto see them, But no, sir,
you don't get to see them whenit's convenient for you. I'll meet
you at the corner bar and we'lldiscuss it. Zach showed up as promised.

(25:38):
Addie doesn't want to see you.I don't want to be her friend,
but if you want to split custodyof the kids, I need to
meet her. On, Zach,I'm mad at you for me, Naddy,
don't we both moved on. I'mmad because you abandoned your kids in
crisis. I'll send money and getAddie to come out. Like road Rangel

(26:02):
in traffic from way to nine. How the meeting go? Lana wants you
to meet the kids. ADDIE's eyeslit up last Really, Oh, what
says are they? I'll go toWalmart. I'm getting something nass for them
to wear. This would be funprocess. Zach was pleasantly surprised because he
had expected the exact opposite reaction, but when they met up with Lanna Jackson

(26:25):
and Lily, Addie refused to interactwith them, and when the kids came
over, forget about it. Zachhad to get a hotel room for him
and the children. Zach was startingto realize the romance of Hurricane Katrina was
over and Addie wasn't as sweet ashe thought she was. By the start

(26:45):
of two thousand and six, Addieand Zach found themselves with new jobs.
Addie picked up another bartending gag andZach delivered groceries on his bike from Matassas.
Both made decent tips, but thisextra money tempted at them with drugs
and booze. Did you grab aneight ball from Squirrel? Yeah? Look,
shit still owes as the rent moneywe gave him. Did you act

(27:07):
like a bitch? Fuck you?Yeah, screamed at him, and I'll
do it again. Who cares.Zach and ADDIE's friends began noticing a vicious
cycle with their relationship. The couplewould fight, Addie would kick Zach out,
both would fall into a depression, and within a few days they'd be
back together again. When it becameso commonplace that they'd break up, then

(27:30):
reconcile within a few hours. Friendsworried the constant fights might have been why
Zach started turning to other means ofsatisfaction. Got your favorite beer tag him?
So what does Zach Bowen want witha real estate mogul like me?
I don't know. I mean,I'm not like gay, but you know

(27:53):
I'm a little by Yeah, Imean I've had a few guys sucked me
off and things aren't working with Addie. So but look, no one in
the quarter knows the shot of myshow say no more. I can keep
a secret. As fate has it, Zach's boyfriend shared the same drug dealer
as him, Squirrel. When Squirrelfound out about Zach's sexuality, he promised

(28:17):
he'd keep his secret. But somewhereor another, Addie found out and was
furious. Addie grabbed hold of Zach'sphone one day and meticulously went through every
female's number. Hey babe, justwant to ton't let you know? You
might want to go to the doctor. I'm gay and got aids L O

(28:41):
L. She then deleted their numbersfrom his phone. It's a lay more.
You're gonna pay me back for thetoilet I had to hire a plumber
for because if not, I ain'tpaying rent, then I'll be a victim.
You who was that your boyfriend?I told you that was temporary?

(29:03):
Is that an eviction notice? Yep? Fucking landlords retaliating for the toilet.
This is great. We're gonna havea fresh start in a new apartment.
We'll start hunting tomorrow. Luck wason their side. On October two,
they stumbled upon a one bedroom apartmenton Rampart Street, directly above the Voodoo
Temple. The landlord, Leo Watermeyer, showed them around, and being in

(29:27):
a tight situation, they took it. There was no lease because in post
Katrina New Orleans, anyone with enoughmoney to put down a deposit in first
month's rent was seen as trustworthy.Little did Leo know the drama he had
just walked into. Come in,I need a lease in money? Is

(29:49):
there any particular reason? I justneed it? Okay? Seeing the fire
in her eyes, Leo quickly drewup a six month lease on yellow legal
pad paper, and no more thanfive minutes later, Leo waltermin Yo,
it's Zach, dude. Did youjust sign a six month lease with Addie?

(30:10):
Yes, sir, Damn, she'sgonna toss me out. I'm about
to be homeless. Man, yougotta come over and fix this. Leo
rushed over and found Zach and Addiearguing in the stairwell. Leo, I
have to be on this lease alone. I caught this piece of shit cheating
on me with a man WHOA Whatyou do in the bedroom is none of

(30:30):
my business. Look, young man, her name is on the lease and
she handed me the deposit. You'llhave to work this out with her.
Leo left, and Zach took theday to think his life over. As
he sat on the couch, heshook his head. You're a failure,
Zack Bowen. You were kicked outof the military, abandon your kids,

(30:51):
and now you're homeless because of acoked out bitch. Why the hell are
you still here? You in oneof those dark moods because of that little
girl you got killed in Iraq.We don't know what caused Zach to snap,
but something inside of him finally collapsed. You fucking crackhead. You screw
me out of a home. Accordingto note Zach left in ADDIE's journal at

(31:15):
about one in the morning on Octoberfifth, two thousand and six. He
strangled her to death, which takesus back to the beginning as Detective Morovich
read over Zach's suicide. Note thisis not accidental. I had to take

(31:36):
my own one to play for theone I took. If you sent a
patrol card at eight twenty six NorthRampart, we're here about Addie. There's
no woman here. ADDIE's one ofmy newest tenants. I can take you
to her home if you'd like. You'll find the dismember corpse of my girlfriend

(32:00):
Addie in the oven, on thestove, and in the fridge, along
with full documentation on the both ofus, and a full sign confession for
myself. The keys in my rightfront pocket are for the gates. Call
Leo Watermeyer to let you in.Zach bowing. He left the air conditioning
on sixty. It's like a meatlocker in here, and no smell.

(32:25):
He did a good job cleaning upthe blood. Oh God. When the
detectives turned on the kitchen light, they were greeted by two pots, just
like Zach had said. What thehell is that? Morevich that my friend
is a set of hands and feet. This front pot appears to be ahead.

(32:46):
We'll send it to the corner.Make sure to Zach had cut off
ADDIE's hair and charred the body sobadly that it would take some time to
confirm it was truly hers. Shouldwe do what that note said? The
officer pointed up to the ominous blackletters spray painted above the stove. Look
in the oven, all right? Then? Here are her arms and legs,

(33:10):
and and is that seasoning? There'spotatoes next to the stove. Maybe
he had a nice meal of her. Excuse me, I need some mayo.
Detective Morovich went outside to gather histhoughts. He would later say it
was one of the worst crime sceneshe had ever entered. It's a mess
in there, beer cans and cigaretteseverywhere. Gee, Zach, what did

(33:37):
you do? When Zach awoke themorning after the murder, he felt like
shit. Addie, get up,well, you gotta work. According to
his journal, Zach had sex withthe corpse. I can't come firm or

(34:00):
deny if this happened, as someofficers told newspapers and autopsy showed it was
a lie. Well, others saidin documentaries that it was true. I'll
let you choose to believe what youwant. Zach eventually put on sunglasses and
mounted his bike for his shift atMatassa's. Hey man, whoa, someone

(34:23):
had a long night? Everything okay? Nah, caps Addie left me moved
back to Durham. That sounds likeEddie. When Zach got back to the
apartment, he stared at the corpse. It took him four days to figure
out what to do with Addie. He had the weekend off work. But

(34:45):
shit, hey Lana, Hey,Zach, did you forget you had the
kids this weekend? Yeah? Listen, I'm gonna give you six hundred bucks
for the child here, and I'mgonna need the weekend to get and get
our new apartment set up for them. Can we switch weekends? Well,
that's fine, but is Addie reallyokay with them coming? Addie? Oh?

(35:07):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, shewon't. She won't mind having them
here. Great, we'll see younext weekend. Zach worked tirelessly throughout the
night. He placed Addie inside thebathtub and then hacked her up. His
goal was to remove the flesh fromthe bone, which is why he placed
her in the oven. Oh.When the smell became overwhelming, he turned

(35:29):
the oven off and blasted the ac. That Monday, he went to Matassa's
for his final shift. When hecame back and saw ADDIE's rotting corpse,
shock finally took over and he decidedto take his own life. But before

(35:51):
he did, he wrote everything hehad done in ADDIE's journal, which is
why investigators were able to sew thoroughlypiece the night together. Zach also had
fifteen hundred bucks so decided to spendit on drugs, alcohol, and strippers.
On Wednesday, October eleventh, nearlya week after murdering Addie, Capriccio

(36:12):
called Zach, Hey, Caps, what's up? Hey man heard you haven't
been working a few days. You'regood. You're the only one that's checked
enimy Caps. That means a lot. I'm gonna come buy Matasses in a
few hours. Let's go out andparty. Zach picked Capriccio up and took

(36:37):
him to the strip club, buthe didn't have any fun. Zach was
blocked out by the time they gottogether, and all Capriccio could think about
was being home with his new girlfriend. Listen, man, this has been
fun, but I would early shifttomorrow. Thank I'll call it in that
alright, I don't, but listen, Cap, I gotta tell you some

(37:00):
So listen, harn, I'm notwho everybody thinks I am. I have
a persona that I present. Youmean that you present a certain persona when
you're bartending, and that's how youget your customers to come back. Yeah,
like that. The last time Zachsaal Capriccio was when he bartended a

(37:30):
party for him. Shortly after thisencounter, after finalizing his suicide note,
Zach lit a cigarette and burned himselftwenty eight times, one scar for every
miserable year that I've been on thisearth. After drowning his sorrows at the
Omni Royal or Leans rooftop bar,Zach walked up to the viewing platform.

(37:52):
Security cameras showed him walking to theledge again and again before he finally tossed
himself over at eight thirty pm.Zach and ADDIE's friends were devastated by the
news, though some weren't entirely surprised. Capriccio had had a bad feeling in

(38:12):
his gut after Zach told him.Addie returned to her hometown. Lana had
mixed feelings. Part of her wasangry at Zach for murdering someone and leaving
her and the kids behind, andthe other part was happy because it showed
he felt remorse for his actions.New Orleanans were also stunned, and it
didn't take long for them to includethe story of Zach and Addie on their

(38:35):
ghost tours. The couple lived abovea voodoo temple, after all, it
was too good of a coincidence notto include in their stories. I'll make
my opinion very blunt on this one. Saying that Zach killed Addie because he
was under a demonic voodoo spell isabsolute horseshit and completely disrespectful. Voodoo,
after all, is about healing.Zach suffered from PTSD and depression. Remember

(39:00):
when he served in the army, not one but two children were murdered,
presumably because they interacted with him.He saw this and nearly everything else he
did as a failure, and ADDIE'sabusive behavior pushed him over the edge.
It doesn't make what he did right, but to me, it's the only
explanation for what happened. Love Likea Hurricane was written, narrated, and
