Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hi, you doing everybody. I'm Ken Bikoff and welcome to
the Pie Podcast. Indiana football is on by this week,
which means it's.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
A nice tall week.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
That's what you relaxed. Nobody says that, na Son, That's
not how this works at all at all. Indiana football
might be on a buy, but Indiana basketball is taking
the opportunity to fill that space with a number of
events that allows them to, uh to kind of showcase
what new head coach Darren Debreeze is doing. And uh so, well,
(00:41):
we're gonna talk some basketball here in just a little bit.
But before we walk away from from football and take
that break from football, I wanted to talk a little
bit about rankings and uh uh and where exactly Indiana
is ranked, the importance of those rankings and everything that
(01:04):
kind of goes into it. Following Indiana's win over Iowa
last weekend, the Hoosiers moved to five and zero and
they also moved up from number eleven to number eight
in the AP Top twenty five rankings. Okay, so they're
ranked number eight in the country. What does that mean.
(01:28):
It's fodder for fans, it's something fun for the media
to talk about and I think that people put a
lot of stock in the rankings and what it is
that it means and everything that goes along with it,
and later in the season it means a little bit more.
But for the start of October, being five and oh
(01:49):
is what is important. A ranking is not important. And
I know a lot of people, a lot of ink
is spilled, a lot of time is spent arguing about
should this team be higher than this team and this,
And for Indiana fans, this kind of thing is relatively new,
although in the past five years at least five six
(02:09):
years twenty nineteen, twenty twenty, Tom Allen had the Hoosiers ranked. Obviously,
Kurt Signetti has it, had Indiana ranked for a couple
of seasons. Now Hoosiers just not even raising eyebrows at
this point. It's tough to make an argument that they
don't belong in the top ten. After winning on the
road at Iowa, next challenge obviously is Oregon, and we're
(02:31):
gonna have a ton about Oregon next week. But you know,
when you look at this, Hoosier ball club had the
gritty win over Iowa, came out on top five and zero.
Kurt Signetti is sixteen and two as head coach of
the Hoosiers and so their ranked number eight in the country.
(02:51):
I think other polls have had him at nine. I
don't care about much of those and what you have
when it comes to the ranking, both whether it's a
coach's ranking or the AP rankings, something that you really
need to remember. Not by the way, I want to
make it clear, I'm not complaining about Indiana being ranked
(03:11):
eight in the country or not being ranked over whoever
or all that. I don't care. I basically don't care.
You know, throw any number you want to next to them.
It doesn't bother me. Think about media members that vote
in the top twenty five. I'm not saying that they not.
Everybody doesn't take it seriously, but some guys don't. Some guys.
(03:36):
Being a sports writer is like any other job, and
I want to want to really kind of make sure
everybody understands this rankings move off of preseason rankings. Preseason
rankings are made usually. I mean, if you're talking about
old school magazines. When I worked for Pro Football Weekly
(03:58):
and Basketball News, the Basketball News National magazine, and this
was twenty plus years ago. Now, that thing went to
press in basically August, but our ranking story had been
taken care of in May, and you're running through the
(04:20):
rankings and who's going to be back, and you know,
we'd have big meetings about this top twenty five and
be like, you know, we haven't had an SEC school
in a while, let's go ahead and drop them in there.
And this happens all the time. The Playboy rankings, the
Playboy magazine college rankings used to be a bigger thing
than they are now, and people would call, hey, you know,
(04:41):
where do you have X team ranked or this other
team ranked? Because they didn't want to be the outlier.
They didn't want it to be weird and have their
rankings be completely different from other people. And so there's
a lot of chatter about that, and so this becomes
kind of the basis for where the those top twenty
five rankings come from. And then so if you start
(05:04):
off the season real high and then you win a
couple of games, you lose one all of a sudden,
you're not gonna drop quite as much because a lot
of people also don't want to be outliers. Once you
get into the season, then you are covering the team
that you are covering. Let's say, just for the AP ranking.
(05:24):
You have the guy who is covering Indiana. He's watching Indiana,
which also means if he's busy watching Indiana, he hads
neither the time or anything else to watch everybody else. Yeah,
you could see some results, maybe you'll see some highlights,
but you don't know how they played. You could read
up a little bit on it, but you also have
(05:44):
to do things like get your kid to dance practice
on Sunday. You have to do this, you have to
do that, you have to file your story. Plus you
know it's raining and driving home is going to take
extra time. And it's just like anything else. So the
wins and losses that is the key to everything. People
don't rank them on how they played anything like that.
(06:07):
Coaches are the same way. They're coaching their team and
then after the game they are reviewing how their team played,
So they don't necessarily have the time to go ahead
and start putting down some rankings. I've heard of guys
having their sports information directors do the rankings for them,
having a graduate assistant do it for them. It's just
(06:28):
not an important part of their job. The whole point
of all of this is every week rankings are released,
and then everybody spends Monday and Tuesday or Sunday, Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday talking about the rankings. Everybody pops them up about
where the rankings are for the rest of the week.
All the rankings are really meaningless. They really are. And
(06:52):
thought the bye week was a good good time for
me to bring this up because I don't think Indiana
is getting screwed at any kind of rankings for Indiana football. Yeah, absolutely,
I'm here for it. They've earned it, They've earned that reputation,
and it's a positive. It's a great talking point. It's fun,
but it's also not tremendously meaningful, especially at the end
(07:14):
of September. Same goes absolutely for basketball as well. I
want to make that very clear. But rankings spend a night.
You can spend all the time you want to pouring
over the rankings. They're arguing with the rankings. They're on
message board on Twitter and whatever it is talking about rankings.
Only thing that matters is Saturday. Only thing that matters
(07:36):
is Saturday, and the of course big matchup with number
two Oregon, who's also won by next week. But it'll
be fun, that'll be fun. So that's my little I'll
step off my soapbox about the rankings. It's something fun,
but just remember, like a lot of things, it's just
not all that important in the grand scheme of things.
(07:57):
It comes in later in the year, but I personally
don't think ranking should exist until at least mid to
late October, once you finally have an idea of who
is you know, playing worth the dam and who is it. Meanwhile,
let's talk about what Indiana Basketball is doing. So it's
kind of an exciting thing here in Bloomington right on Kirkwood.
(08:22):
Indiana is going to be holding the Hoosier Hoops on
Kirkwood from eight to ten starting Thursday night. And it's
it's a hell of an event. It's a great idea.
They're doing it on Kirkwood. It's going to bring a
crowd of people. It's kind of like the old who's
your Hysteria Midnight Badness thing? A great event for the fans,
(08:43):
and it's a little it's i'll say innovative, I guess
because it's outdoors, because of where it's being held. It's
unique and it's exciting and it's something that I think
can really inject a lot of energy into a program
that you know, over the past couple of years it's
been more frustrating than anything else. You have a coaching change,
(09:05):
so you have the excitement of a new head coach,
basically a completely new program for the second time in
twenty years. Indiana has no players from last year. You know,
it is a new head coach, new trainers, new everything
that goes on, new players. It's a whole new program,
(09:27):
and so this is the opportunity to kind of showcase
what they do. Then Friday, you have a cream at
Crimine Cream and Crimson scrimmage over at Simon Scott Assembly
Hall that fans could go and see the team play
and actually get a little bit of work in. I
think that that's fantastic. And then you have a haunted
(09:48):
Hall of Hoops is coming back at the end of
the month. The outreach to fans by Indiana Basketball, I
think is really a huge positive for this pro because
it didn't really exist under Mike Woodson. And I'm very
very happy they have the athletic department and specifically new
(10:10):
head coach Daron Devrees is making this effort. Mike Woodson
was very insulated in many ways. He wasn't there to
really deal with the fans. He wasn't there to to
kind of let the program be close to the fans,
and it was just his attitude on how he went
(10:32):
about everything. He kind of held himself above. It wasn't
a deserved feeling. He hadn't done anything as IU head
coach to feel that way. And although his playing days
were great, that was forty years in the past. This
(10:54):
feels different because it's very important. You're gonna hear from
him in just a few minutes, but Darren Devrees feels
like he's giving the program kind of back to the fans,
bringing them a little bit closer to the program, and
doing these events, something outside on Kirkwood, doing something a
couple of events at Simon Scott Assembly Hall. It's a
(11:15):
different way to go about things, and to reintroduce a
program that is absolutely beloved in a fan base that
is just dying for success. It's at least the effort
is being made, and I think that it's really really
a great opportunity for Indiana basketball. This is a team
(11:38):
that we don't know what they're going to look like
because none of these guys have played a game together
and I'm talking about. You know this isn't a situation. Well,
you got a couple of returning starters that know this
is clean slate, baby, same close, same tradition, completely different roster,
(11:59):
and so being able to literally bring the team to
the fans in an iconic setting, I think is something
that is really really exciting for this program and it's
going to be an absolute great opportunity for Darren Devrees
to introduce himself and introduce his team to a fan
(12:21):
base that is just dying for something to cheer for.
The toxicity that existed in the program last year is
gone because of the coaching change. Archie Miller didn't do
a great job connecting with fans during his time at IU.
Mike Woodson did not do a good job of connecting
(12:44):
with fans during his time at IU. Darren de Frees
is at least making this early effort to do so,
and I give a lot of credit to him and
the athletic department for basically doing what they're doing this weekend,
taking the advantage, taking the out opportunity of football being
on a buy to really gather all the spotlight for
(13:05):
the basketball program and bring things to the fans now
how it's the team shaping up on the court. We
have to see how they they play once the games
are in order. But for someone who definitely knows what's
going on, here's head coach Darren Devrees during his meeting
with the media earlier this week talking about where his
(13:27):
team is at, where you know, kind of what he's
seeing from his players and what he envisions for his
program during the twenty twenty five twenty six basketball season.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
But coach, you have multiple players junior college players who
received additional ability thanks to the court proceedings. Kind of
curious what your history with juco players is. How often
have they kind of come through your system and would
you like to see kind of just curious for you
to win the NCAAA take the tech that that eligibility
for junior players doesn't count towards Division one, doesn't start
(14:01):
their clock kind of going forward, that's the rule. Because
that's still up in the air.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Yeah, to my understanding, that ruling is still a little
bit up in the air. I think that was just
a one time ruling. Don't don't quote me on that,
But so most of our guys right now that that
came from the junior to college level, are still within
their normal framework of eligibility. So but you know, for us,
they've they've been you know, an awesome addition for us,
(14:28):
just because the experience they have from the multiple spots
they've been, So, you know, pretty excited about that. But
moving forward, I'm not sure how that's going to play
out for for all those guys.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
Yeah, coach, what do you feel you guys are best
at right now or like what are you most confident
in and what area do you feel you know, these
confident or that needs the most work right now?
Speaker 5 (14:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
What I what I think we're best at right now
is just their coachability. Like they've you know, from the
first week in June till now, they've continued to just
want to learn, want to get better.
Speaker 6 (15:00):
Like every week you have good days and bad days.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
You know from a practice standpoint that you feel like
you did them some things really well. In other days
maybe not as well. But that's kind of part of
the preseason. But I love how coachable they are. I
love I think how unselfish that we play. I think
even our communication, our connectivity shines through a little bit
on not only in the offensive end, but the defensive
end that's starting to really come together as we've gotten
(15:26):
further and further through the summer and fall.
Speaker 6 (15:28):
So I like the progress we've made.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
I think we have, you know, a lot of guys
that they've shown throughout practice that we have multiple guys
that can score the basketball, so you're not just relying
on one or two guys every night. I think we
have a lot of different ways we can score a
lot of different guys that can shoot the ball. So
I'm excited about that piece. And then defensively, I like
how they you know, they bring great enthusiasm and energy
(15:53):
to the defensive end. So that's something that we have
to be really good at to be good on the
defensive side, because we're not going to be over the
you know, big and long and athletics, so we got
to be very sound in what we do from a
discipline standpoint, and then just be very aggressive in the
way we approach it.
Speaker 5 (16:12):
Yeah, for you in your first year, you know, leading
the program, what would define a successful year for you?
Speaker 6 (16:18):
To what defines success for this group?
Speaker 2 (16:21):
Yeah, I think I've said this even from our press conference.
It's not really about wins and losses. I think the
success is coming from like, are we doing what we
feel we need to do every day, you know, from
a mindset, from an approach, and are we you know,
getting to where we want them to get to from
that standpoint, everything that we value, whether it be in practice,
(16:41):
off the floor, on the floor, are they doing those things?
And you know, I like what they've done to this point,
and I just I've always been a strong believer in like,
if you can get a group connected enough at all
the little things, the discipline things, the toughness things, that
you can have a group that can win a lot
of games.
Speaker 6 (16:58):
And that's our our goal.
Speaker 7 (17:02):
Just curious how you're feeling about the health of your
team right now. I notice there's a couple of guys
that didn't participate today. Is it is it? Are they
in long term situations? Are you expected to be healthy
like when the season starts.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
Yeah, it looks like like we're investors in boots right now,
you know. So you know, some of them are very
short term, some are a little bit longer term. So
we have you know, you know, are certainly our practice
adapt has been cut into immensely here. So it's it's
made some things challenging from a practice standpoint, But we'll
have a few of the guys that are getting closer
(17:34):
to getting back. You know, one guy out with with
some sickness today, so that's you know, a minor one.
One one's out with a sprained ankle. But you know,
with these new roster limits and things, there's not a
lot you can do to even add to that. So
it does make things a little challenging. But we're hopeful
that we're getting all this out of the way in
the preseason and and working our way back into getting healthy.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
Darren. I guess, particularly about a player who's been working
back towards phil health, it seems like Nick Dorn is
able to do more and more. I know he missed
the summer and you can't replace that time, but what
have you seen from him and maybe how is it?
How is it matched on film? You know what the
player that you were recruiting to the one that now
you maybe you're starting to be able to get to
work with a little bit more.
Speaker 6 (18:16):
Yeah, I'm I'm a little worried.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
I've been watching him run on the sidelines that coach
Sigmke try and steal him from me, because like he
can run, he can move.
Speaker 6 (18:24):
You know, you've seen him. He's a big, physical guy.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
So as he's working his way back, we haven't had
an opportunity to see a lot of the basketball piece.
A lot of it's been you know, shooting some light
movement stuff, but he's certainly getting closer and closer to
full health before we get in into more of that
live contact. So we're excited about you know, him getting
back whenever that time comes. But you know, I think
he's another you know, added piece that you know, we're
(18:48):
looking forward to seeing what he can do.
Speaker 5 (18:51):
You had mentioned after the last one against Mega that
that lineup with reading Sam hadn't you know, repped as
much with having Andre here. How much has that help them?
Speaker 2 (19:01):
Yeah, it's helped us a lot, just to have multiple
guys that you know, at the five position so that,
you know, from a practice standpoint, we can do some
more experimental type things, you know, going with a more
you know, a bigger lineup at times during practice. And yeah,
I thought Sam and Reid we had done just very
little of it heading into that, but we wanted to
try it in a in a real game where we
(19:22):
you know, could sub people in and out. So I
think it's going to be a lineup that's going to
help us throughout the year, So we'll continue to work
with it and see what we can do. And those
are type of things because it is a different type
of lineup that youve got to You're trying to get
different things on the offensive end and maybe even a
little bit the defensive end. But having that size out
there is certainly a good advantage if we can develop
(19:43):
enough depth along that front line so that we can
play that way.
Speaker 5 (19:48):
Coach on Nick, what was it at Elon that you
saw and then what was it in your conversations with
him that made him a guy that you guys wanted
to bring in.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
Yeah, I think what stands out most is just just shooting,
you know, and that's what we prioritize. You know, he's
got great length, he has ability to get it off,
you know, great size from that position, and uh, you know,
he's not bashful, So I love that about him. He's
very confident as a shooter and just an awesome, awesome
guy too. He's so fun to be around and I
can't wait for him to get out on the practice
(20:16):
for where you can kind of see, you know, his energy,
energy and enthusiasm so again we're just you know, looking
forward to to getting back out there and getting healthy.
Speaker 8 (20:27):
Aaron, you altered kind of preseason festivities for this program,
but the two events this week and then bring you
back Haunted, Oh who's.
Speaker 4 (20:34):
At the end of October.
Speaker 8 (20:35):
Just from your perspective, what was the purpose and goal
of kind of going away from the more tragical events
and bringing in these new events in the case fans.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
Yeah, I thank some of it. We brought in a
new one, we brought an old event back. I think
from our standpoint was just we want to make sure
that we're we're a big part of the community, big
part of the campus, you know, and we want to
give as many chances as we can to have those
interactions because I think we have a group that's that's
fun to be around. They're a good group of guys,
and we want people to be able to see him,
(21:04):
you know, on a different level besides just on the
basketball floor. So we've tried to get involved in as
many community activities as we could, whether it be with
with you know, youth or adults or whatever it might be,
so that you know, they get as many chances to
see them, you know, on a more personal level.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
Coach over here. I know he's a little bit banged
up with josh Harris. What do you expect from him?
Speaker 4 (21:29):
What can he bring to the team.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Yeah, Joshua brings some some very good physicality for us,
and you know, he works incredibly hard. He's, you know,
another one of those guys that unfortunately is out. So
we'll see what that means for him here in the
in the short term. But we really liked his approach
every day. He's one of those guys that's in the
gym working and he's trying to develop his game. So again,
from an injury standpoint, we'll see how that shakes out
(21:53):
here for us for the next foreseeable future.
Speaker 5 (21:57):
Yeah, coach, you mentioned before Puerto Rico being most excited
for your team kind of getting to spend some time
off the court with each other. Have you noticed a
growth in chemistry since the trip in terms of in
and out of practice.
Speaker 6 (22:08):
Yeah. I thought the trip was great for us.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
You know, it's you know, Taitan and High where we
were teammates, if you will, kayaking. I don't think we're
the greatest kayaking team ever, so, but we did those
type of things where you got to you know, do
some stuff that maybe you aren't in a comfortable position.
You know, you're doing things you've never done before. So
I thought that was awesome for our team, for our
staff to be able to have that type of interaction,
(22:31):
whether it be you know, snorkeling, saying volleyball, you know,
jet skiing, all those type of activities were you know,
something that I thought was really beneficial for us. You
just don't get to do that as often as you
might think when you're on campus. You know, you just
don't hang out on that type of level. So that trip,
those type of trips are great for you to get
an early start, especially on a team like ours and
(22:53):
a staff like ours that is, you know, essentially all new.
Speaker 6 (22:58):
Coach.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
You've got some guys on this team that were really
good players on teams that weren't as good.
Speaker 9 (23:03):
What goes into recalibrating the way their approach and the
way they think.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
Yeah, I think there's there's always something to you you
want to take into account to you know, some of
those type of things. But for us, it's like when
we're going through the recruiting process, even though some of
them are very short, Uh, you know, what's important to them,
and I think for a lot of these guys winning
was was really important to them. They have one year left,
a lot of them they want to go out as
(23:30):
as winners. They want to they want to play in
the nca Tournament. So those are things that you know
when that's a priority to them, you can tell pretty
quickly that that's what they're motivated by. You know, their
circumstances from whatever school they were. There's only sometimes there's
only so much control you have on on a team
or a roster that you can impact. But I'm excited
about the group again. I think their approach is right.
(23:51):
I think they're motivated by the right things.
Speaker 6 (23:55):
Yeah, Trent Sisley seems like he's in the mix for
major minutes.
Speaker 2 (23:59):
What's he doing well right now and what area does
he need to kind of step up to get those
meaningful minutes in the regular season. Yeah, I think Trent's
doing really well for a freshman coming in. He's you know,
from the first week in June till now, he's continued
to get better. He's coachable. I think he's becoming more
confident in what he's doing and what we want him
to do and intermixing that together, so you know, that's
(24:23):
always a hard transition coming out of high school, is
like how do you fit into what the new team's doing?
The speed this, you know, the physicality of the game.
But I don't think he has really a lot of
problems with that. You know, he's still got some of
those growing pains every new college player has, but he's
done a great job of continuing to try to work
on him and address him. But I like for him
(24:45):
for this group is you know, he's not a guy
that has to come out every night. We don't have to,
you know, completely rely on him. But he's also in
terms of like he doesn't have to get us twenty
every night, but he's also a guy that can. So
that's what I think is critical for him. Is nice
to have the supporting cast he has around him so
he can continue to grow and do it at a
rate that you know, I think he can be very
(25:07):
comfortable with.
Speaker 9 (25:10):
Darren, you brought an openness to this program that wasn't
there before, and you touched on it a minute ago.
But how important is it for you to do that.
You've been kind in us to let kind enough to
let us in twice, and thank you for that, by
the way, it's invaluable, but you're at an event last night,
so you're really making an effort to do that.
Speaker 6 (25:29):
Why is that so important? Again?
Speaker 2 (25:31):
I just I think we're at a place where, you know,
in basketball is incredibly important Indiana. Basketball is important to
a lot of people. So you know, I want them
to be able to have access to something they really
find valuable and important to them. And I think that's
that's what we want. We want people to feel like
they're not watching from afar. We want them to feel
(25:52):
like they're right on the inside and they're they're step by,
uh you know, stride by stride with us as we
go through it. Because, uh, you know, for a fan standpoint,
do they have a huge impact on us winning and
losing a lot of times? You know, that type of
support doesn't happen everywhere. We have it here. We have
a night where every time we toss that ball up
this building and our fan base impacts helping us win,
(26:15):
and that's that's critical.
Speaker 6 (26:16):
So we want them to be a part of it.
We want all you to, you know, be a part
of it.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
It's something that I'm sure you love covering and and
I'm sure there's times you'll even have advice, you know,
and that's but that's okay, that's uh, that's what people
love this game. They love this game here at Indiana
and and we do too, and we want to, you know,
we want everyone to feel a part of that.
Speaker 7 (26:38):
Defensively, where where do you feel like you guys have
made the most strides since you came together as a team,
And where do you feel like one or two areas
that you have to continue to make strides as the
season comes up pretty quickly.
Speaker 2 (26:49):
Here, Yeah, what I think always takes a little bit
of time. And how we how we play is we
don't give them a ton of rules. So there's not
a defiant hey you're switching this, or a definite year
switch this or not switching this. So some of it
is like, hey, we're trying to be really physical, but
if he gets hit, you have to switch. So they
it takes a while for them to kind of figure out, Okay,
(27:09):
did he get hit enough not hit enough for us
to switch? And then the communication piece is the second
part of it, and a lot of times they're a
little hesitant because they're not.
Speaker 6 (27:17):
Not sure on the on the call or whatever.
Speaker 2 (27:19):
But as time goes on, you can see that connectivity
starting to really build and and this team I think
has done a really good job of that, just like
a lot of other teams that you know, I've coached,
is you can see it now and they're becoming more
confident in what they're doing, more physical. They can play
faster because of that, and that's something again, we have
to be really good at it. We have to be
(27:40):
very connected as a defense and still have the ability
to play hard and fast without you know, slowing them
down with a lot of rules. So I like the
progress we've made. There's still plenty of room to grow there,
but they'll continue to work at it. So that's that's something.
I think we've come a long way since June. I
mean a lot of you saw it back in June.
I don't think you would have said said that maybe
(28:02):
back then that we were a good defensive team. So
I think we've made some strides and and still got
some work to do for sure.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
So there's Darren Debrees talking about his program, a lot
of interesting stuff. It's it's gonna be an exciting season
because of so many unknowns, so many unknowns, people are
gonna fall in love with some players. They're gonna end
up not liking some players. But it's fresh. Everything is fresh,
and that to me is something that really generates a
(28:30):
lot of excitement for the upcoming season because you don't
have any preconceived notions of what guys are going to
be able to do. You may have seen them perform
at other stops, but being able to see them in
an Indiana uniform, see a completely fresh start, I think
is a huge positive. It's gonna be an exciting weekend
at IU and it'll be a very very interesting season
(28:53):
