Speaker 1 (00:08):
How are you doing, everybody. I'm Ken Bike Guff and
welcome to the Peaks podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Indiana football is back. It's back in action.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
I know that people are really excited about Indiana's trip
to Oregon to take on the Ducks in a top
ten matchup when both teams it's a long way from
where Indiana football used to be and it's going to
be an exciting game. We're gonna hear from Kurt Signetti
here in just a little bit, but I wanted to

(00:39):
start by kind of talking about fans and and I
don't know if you know, I've been covering this program
for a long time, and I for one am not
used to the idea that Indiana could go and play

(01:00):
Oregon and have an opportunity to win this ball game.
They do because of their defense, because of the explosiveness
of the offense. It's going to be a challenge, but
it also is a situation where Oregon's been in a
lot of these kind of big games before. Indiana just
keeps churning out wins, which is incredible in and of itself,

(01:23):
but going across the country and battling and possibly beating,
you know, the number two three team in the country
on the road. I'm having a tough time wrapping my
head around. But it's not based in fact that one's
purely feelings that you've seen Indiana have this challenge time

(01:47):
and time again of just not beating teams that they
aren't expected to beat.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Now that's said.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
In the past, going to Iowa and winning and tough,
Indiana did it, you know, And so I really think
that this one is going to be a great measuring
stick for the Hoosiers because of the fact that this
is a program that had the season it did last year,
has gotten off to the very strong start this year.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Just straight curb.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Stomped Illinois when they played them here at home, went
on the road to Iowa their first trip on the
road of the year, and had to eke out a win,
but they won, and they won based on defense, an
offense that did a good job of making plays when
you needed it most. And there's not a lot of

(02:42):
weaknesses for this IU football team. You know, all the metrics,
everything that goes into it says that they have a
great chance of going back to the College football playoffs.
But again, you need that measuring stick and looked at
Illinois as kind of a measuring stick and then the

(03:03):
Hoosiers just overwhelmed them.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
So this is your next one.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
And so to me, this is going to be one
hell of a fun game because of what the Hoosiers
need to do to win. And we'll get to that
in a few minutes, but just the whole vibe of
being able to go to Oregon as a program and
not only hope to win, but expect to win. That's
kind of where Indiana is. Kurt Signetti has instilled a

(03:33):
belief in this program that it could beat anybody, and
we're going to see how that comes to life. Now
we're gonna talk a little bit about what to expect
from this game or what the Hoosiers need to do
to win the ballgame in just a few minutes, But
first I wanted to bring you comments from head coach
Kurt Signetti during his meeting with the media last Monday

(03:53):
in the team room at Memorial Stadium.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
All Right, goodbye week, got rested up, got practiced in,
kept the fundamentals and timing sharp, and now it's one
hundred percent focus on Oregon. Great opponent, great team, a
lot of great players, extremely well coached, big fast, athletic

(04:16):
physical depth. Coach Landing done a tremendous job recruiting development attention,
probably one of the most impressive young coaching phenoms to
come around. While I would say haven't been in this

(04:37):
game for a little bit, They're a great football team
looking forward to challenge. Confidence in our team.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Isn't, Zach?

Speaker 4 (04:51):
Is it a step above? I mean you talked about
Oregon being kind of one of the teams with a
limited resources back in April. Is that kind of a
direct result of that where you see just their depth
step above maybe the rest of the Big ten.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
I don't know what their resources are. You know, oh
I know is they got a lot of good players, Hurt.

Speaker 5 (05:13):
I imagine you know your roster and the way you
preaches to approach every game the same way. But you
guys have now played in, you know, a lot of
these really sort of high profile matchups in a short
space of time. Do you see your players just at
all more comfortable that none of this seems new or
sort of you know, over overaweing to them. I guess
maybe the way it might have even a little bit

(05:34):

Speaker 3 (05:34):
Right, Well, I haven't seen our players in a couple
of days and we have a veteran team, so they've
been around the block and most of them been in
games like this before.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
Hey, Kurt, I guess what makes Dante more so effective?
And is this the deepest group of receivers you guys
have faced this year?

Speaker 3 (05:57):
Yeah, well, he's playing really well. He's another guy got
big time arm talent, quick release, accurate, He's very athletic,
very fluid, can run, extend plays, change the direction. He's
getting the ball out on time, rhythm, and he snaps

(06:17):
it off really quick. He's really impressive on tape, and
the wide receivers are equally as impressive. Tight end. Good
depth there, good depth at running back. They spread the
ball around, they use the field, and they run the
ball well. So as he's played more, you can see

(06:41):
he's building on his success, confidence, belief, and you know
he's one of the great quarterbacks in the country. There's
no doubt about it.

Speaker 4 (06:51):
You've dealt with the travel to the West coast before
with U. C.

Speaker 6 (06:54):
L A.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Obviously this's a much better team in Oregon.

Speaker 5 (06:58):
Does it matter if the games are earlier in the day,
later in the day, and how you mitigate that travel.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
More? No than yes, but a little bit. We're gonna
get out there slightly earlier than we did UCLA, but
it won't be by much.

Speaker 6 (07:15):
Daniel, you mentioned after the playoff loss last year that
what separated y'all from those elite teams on the road
was there just a little bit stronger, you know, had
a little bit more size. Do you feel like y'all
have you know, trim that margin at all?

Speaker 3 (07:32):
Roster wise, We're not as big as organ. I mean,
they can roll four inside guys at d tackle or
three thirty plus and they got big people in there.
So I guess we're gonna find out this week. But
what I would say about the highest state and Notre Dame,
you know, you can dwell on the line of scrimmage,
but I don't think we won the battle at any

(07:53):
position in those games.

Speaker 7 (07:58):
You mentioned after the Iowa game you guys didn't really
check out of things or let Fernando Audible out of
things because of the road environment that the crowd noise.
Do you anticipate some sort of the same line of
thinking going to the Orgon game.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
We've never been a check audible team really, to be
honest with you, early on at JMU, maybe would send
a play in Uh, and he had to have a
certain look and he'd looked at his sideline. But we
quit doing that after year two. Uh, we don't do
a lot of it.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
We talk about doing it at times. And we'll see
what this week brings.

Speaker 7 (08:36):
Joe, you talked about after Iowa that Fernando passed that
test in Iowa City. What will he need to show
you this week to pass a test against Oregon.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Well, he made some outstanding throws against Iowa. I don't
recall that exact comment, left some plays out there too,
but he was under pressure quite a bit as well.

Speaker 8 (08:53):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
You know, I just want Fernando, like the rest of
the guys on the team, to relax and play their game.
You know, we just go go out there and play
our game and play it well.

Speaker 9 (09:06):
Dan Lanning has one home loss to his name and
Austin is an incredibly tough atmosphere. How much did that
Iowa game atmosphere wise kind of help in preparation to
going out to Eugene.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
Well, I think any time you do something the second time,
it helps that you've been through it one time before.
And Iowa was you know, it was a sellout. It
was loud, so to have that kind of preparation going
into this game will help. Coach.

Speaker 8 (09:38):
Do you think that travel from last year to U
C l A. You said you're you're keeping mostly the same.
Do you think that helps the guys who are returning
and some of the guys who came in that they
can combine together to figure it out.

Speaker 3 (09:51):
There's not much a figure out. I mean, that's what
we do every game. We get in about the same
time in the evening, and we've got our routine and uh,
it's just the way I like to do it.

Speaker 8 (10:04):
Coach, what's your mindset like going into a big game
like this on the road?

Speaker 3 (10:09):
I mean, you know, I'm trying to get as much
done today as possible and find the edge and like
every every game, you know you really I say it
all the time, you prepare from all the same. Otherwise
you'd be doing a disservice to your team if you're
all in one game and not all in on another. Right, So,

(10:33):
from that standpoints pretty much the same.

Speaker 7 (10:38):
When you mentioned maybe not being quite as big upfront
as organ is, how do you kind of combat that
going into the game on Saturday.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
Well, you put together the best plan for your team
that you think gives you the best chance to be successful.
But I have confidence in our team. Right. They are big,
they are athletic, they are a very good football team.
We're a good football team.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
One.

Speaker 4 (11:08):
Could you have any update on the status of D'Angelo
Ponds and kind of when you watch the film, how
do you think this secondary held up without him against Ia?

Speaker 3 (11:14):
Yeah, I expect Pawns to be fine and play. We
found out late in the week he wouldn't be available
for the Iowa game, so co chains took out the
eraser and ink Penn and game plan changed a little bit,
played a little bit more zone than he was playing
on playing going into the game. Uh, and I thought

(11:34):
we did well.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
So there sig from the team room, and you know
he approaches everything his business as usual. That has always
been what he does. And you know, this is a game.
You watch what Oregon did against Penn State and the
challenge that they had and pulled off the victory, and
it was a it was a great win for them.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
And then Penn State goes to u C.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
L A and gets beat by a unless you see
LA team leaves you wondering just how good Oregon is
now They've had two weeks UH to UH to prepare
same as Indiana.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
But Oregon's very good.

Speaker 1 (12:15):
And they have an offense that can put points on
the board. But Indiana's defense is the key to this one.
Defense is always the key every time out. And Indiana's
defense has been great this year, really really good. They've
improved with each and every game and especially you you

(12:38):
the coverage in in UH in the defensive backfield has
been really really good. D'Angelo Ponds, you heard, is expected
to be back. That's a huge positive for the Hoosiers.
So what does Indiana need to do to win well?
First and foremost, Indiana has to create some takeaways they
got they gotta be disruptive and force organ out of

(13:00):
its comfort zone and create some takeaways, your interceptions, fumbles,
things like that. They want to make sure that they're
able to handle make everything difficult on Oregon, and that
starts with taking the ball away. So getting some turnovers

(13:21):
is going to be really really critical.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
Offensively, you want to keep Oregon off the.

Speaker 1 (13:27):
Field offensively, So that means Indiana's offense is to put
together some drives. Even if you've got to grind some
things out, so be it. And you also have to
control that line of scrimmage. Controlling the line of scrimmage
on both sides is going to be the biggest challenge
because Oregon is very good upfront, but Indiana has shown

(13:49):
that it can be dominant as well. So that's why
I say, you know, this feeling, this idea that Indiana
can compete here. I really have to it into my
head because the facts are the facts. The IU fan
in me, the IU alum, has to flush the past.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
It's not a problem for the players. They are bought in.
They they got it down.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
But the Hoosiers are going to be able to need
to be able to win the battle up front, limit
their own turnovers, create turnovers, and.

Speaker 2 (14:29):
Give themselves a chance in the fourth quarter.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
Not gonna take a perfect game like it may have
in the past. This is a very very good IU
football team. They is building respect with each passing week.
Kurt Signetti is sixteen and two as I use head coach,
and the game plan will be uh. They've had plenty

(14:55):
of time to prepare.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
It's a big game.

Speaker 1 (14:57):
It's a really big game because it's on the road
and it's a it's a proving ground, it's a measuring
stick and being able to pull off the victory would
be absolutely huge, would easily catapault Indiana into the top
five in the country. And it's it's it's proving time
for the Hoosiers, So you have to come out, start fast,

(15:19):
can't get rattled by the crowd. Indiana had a little
bit of problems against Iowa with their silent counts. Working
with that is going to be really important. And being
able to get snaps off without any pre snap penalties,
false starts, things.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
Like that have to be avoided. They just have to.

Speaker 1 (15:39):
And again, the key to everything, give yourself a chance
to win in the fourth quarter. That's what Indiana did
at Iowa and it is able to walk away with
the victory. Being able to do that at Oregon is
another step, but we'll see if it's if it's possible
for the Hoosiers. Now a quick note, the Peak's postgame Live,
