in fourteen days, and we wrapup the series with the cardinals final NFC

(00:56):
East opponent, the Philadelphis, whomthe Cardinals face on the road week seventeen,
New Year's Eve, the defending NDCchampion Philadelphia. That Eagles, that
is, and to help us previewthat that opponent not for the first time.
He's back on the show again forat least the second time as Eagles

(01:19):
Wire Managing Editor. Glenn Rby,a frequent flyer to the programs. Is
it feels like the Cardinals and theEagles seem to play often. Glenn,
thanks for coming on. I appreciatedhow you've been great. Just appreciate you
having me on. I hope everythingis going great. It is. It
is, you know, things thingsout in Philly, a place where people

(01:42):
are you know, fans are perpetuallyunhappy. They've got to be pretty happy
overall, aside from the sadness ofseeing Patrick Mahomes come back and beat another
team that they thought had had theChiefs beat. So congrats on a fabulous
season, even though we had todisappointment on the end. Let's talk about

(02:05):
that year first. Okay, didthe Eagles? So what were the Eagles
expectations entering last season? Were theirexpectations to do what they did last year?
I think they were a year ahead. I mean, I think if
you ask Sirianni, if you asksome of the players, that is the
expectation. For me. I thought, you know, you wanted to improve

(02:29):
on the nine and eight records. You wanted to win at least ten eleven
games, win a playoff game.Did Jalen Hurts the playoff wins? So
I think from that standpoint, theyimproved. And then when you have to
fast start, you have to thethree total losses in the regular season,
and they get into the super Bowl. You know, I think they jumped
a year in, a year ahead, which is good. So I think
that the window that we actually thoughtwas starting and starting now, so they

(02:50):
got to a super Bowl a yearprior. So you know, confidence is
good, continuity is high. Everythingis great at the Novacare Complex. Absolutely.
How how would you rate, likeI believe last year when we last
year, when we were doing thisshow a year ago, we talked about
Jalen Hurts, How was Ealen Hurtscompared to your expectations in twenty twenty Oh,

(03:13):
he continues to just shatter them.I think, you know, like
we just talked about you, youwanted to see him come back, improve
on his decision making, improve zachoracy, all those things. I think
it turns up everything he did,his performance in the Super Bowl, MVP
runner up. I mean, it'sjust it's a great thing. It gives
the franchise continuity. I think forthe next seven to centi years they'll have

(03:34):
really excellent quarterback play. So fromthat standpoint, you know they're set up
to continue to be. Well.Does he need do you think he still
needs? Like I'm not gonna sayhe necessarily has, but they've been,
They've they've built an incredible running gameto kind of help him out. They
added JJ Brown, But does heneed does he continue to need that strong

(03:55):
a running game? Does he needto be quote unquote protected like that,
or is he ready to cut looseand be on the same par as the
gun slingers out there in the NFL. I think a little bit of both.
I think from the accuracy standpoint, the arm strength, the maturity,
the thirty something plus games he's playednow, he's ready to be on air

(04:16):
level. I think it doesn't helpthe NFL's best offensive line. I think
it doesn't hurt you to have agroup that you know. Because that line
is so good, you can doa committee by approach situation with the running
back crew, which which allows himto do more. So I think it's
a little bit of both. Ithink he's going to take that next step.
I think he'll join that elite class. But I think having the NFL's
top offensive line and those guys LaneJohnson, Jason Kelsey, guys like that,

(04:40):
I think it allows him to beelite and a more complete player.
What do the Eagles lose, Well, let's stock that before the loss impact
okay, were what were the feelingson your end and Eagles fans in general
about Jonathan Gannon as a defensive coordinator. He's now the Cardinals had coach,
and Nick Rawllis as a position coach. I no position coaches. It's hard

(05:02):
to get a read on what thekind of what the vibe is, what
the feeling is about position coaches, because they don't talk to media practically at
all, so we don't really knowmuch about them. But in terms of
what the view coming off of lastseason, what was the general opinion about
Jonathan Gannon as a coordinator and thenNick Rawllis, whatever might have been the

(05:23):
kind of the kind of the vibeabout him. I think in terms of
Ganning, I think if you knowthe sport, or not even necessarily knowing
the sport, but if you knowwhat you're watching, if you know the
type of defense they're played, youknow he's going to be a big loss.
I don't know if it would bethe biggest loss. I think Rallis
could be potentially a bigger losses interms of you know, youth potential.
You know, he's a fast he'sa rising star in the NFL world.

(05:45):
Who knows if you couldn't have beenthe defensive coordinator. So I think from
the standpoint of the Gannon being aVic Fangio disciple, the replacement being a
Vic Fangiow disciple, I think thingswill stay the same. So from that
standpoint you have some continue But Ithink, you know, he's really diligent,
He's a really uh efficient coach. He put him in a really good
position. I think you take awayto Super Bowl loss and the inability to

(06:09):
adjust to the Chiefs in the motionand the different things that were he did
a really good job. Do youhow much of what how much of what
happened at the in the second halfof that Super Bowl do you place on
gannon um or and how much doyou just credit credit Mahomes and the Chiefs
Because they did it to San Francisco, they did it to Cincinnati in that

(06:30):
they did to San Francisco the before, they did it in the Super Bowl,
they did it to Cincinnati in theChampionship game. Like at what point,
Like I know, I know themedia has been killing Gannon. Like
when Gannon went to talk at atthe combine, it was a bunch of
angry Eagles reporters and that's what hehad to talk about. How much how

(06:53):
much do you how much do youput blame do you put on Gannon for
what happened. I think he getsit all now because the tampering situation and
the way he got the job.So, I mean, you know,
it's on the players. I thinkeveryone has to be prepared. Okay,
they run the motion in the firsthalf, we'll figure it out in the
second half. For them to doit again and do it multiple times in
the second half, and I thinkboth times that let the touchdowns. There's

(07:15):
no adjustment, there's no communication. So I think, you know, you
already have a frustrated fan base, you already have frustrated players. Then when
you learn about the tampering, theconversations during Super Bowl preparation, it makes
it worse. I'm not sure youknow, if you if you look at
it from a broad spectrum, acouple of phone calls shouldn't necessarily taken away
from the preparation. But that's theway it looks. Yeah, yeah,
then then it does the tampering thatour Eagles fans kind of are they upset

(07:41):
about that time, because the truthis I hadn't heard any about it.
Until right before the draft, whenthe when the when the trade went down
for the settle it'd been and afterthe fact, I mean Annie all support
didn't didn't talk much about it,but again and talked about he said,
yeah, you know, after theNFC championship game, Um Money called him,
just had a conversation. Was onephone call the day after the soup

(08:05):
after the championship game. I personallyhave a hard time thinking that that factored
in it all. But I mean, especially especially what we know about Gannon.
Right, it's not like like mostcoordinators have a plan already in place
for a head coaching interview. Andthe truth is Gannon and Austin Ford had

(08:30):
already connected a year before and andGannon impressed him. But that's beside the
point. That's it's interesting, butI am interested in that in that other
perspective. Now, let's go andcoming on next on the Rice ups here
at podcast the Best Our Cardinals talkingabout let's talk about the off season.
There's been some big, big changesum and big returns. That's coming next
and Rice ups he read, We'reback on the Rice us here at podcasts

(08:50):
Best our Cardinals talking Well, letme move to the off season. We
started with free agency, well, actually it started with coaching losses. We
talked a little bit about that JonathanGannon out the door Nick Rawlis, and
there are some here who think thatperhaps the Eagles are probably a little more
disappointed in losing Rawleis then Gannon, because I think you know that your coordinator

(09:11):
is going to end up leaving ifyou have a good team, but then
to lose the potential replacement for him, I'm I'm actually very intrigued because what
is primarily a foreman front in Philly. Obviously they they switched it up a
lot. They remain here on papera three forefront, which I'm very like.

(09:33):
I thought we were going to seedefense very similar similarly schemed to what
Philly did and at least on howthey build the roster with positions, and
they haven't changed the thing here, which has us Okay, what's it gonna
look like now you have a newdefensive coordinator, what's the new coaching staff
look like, and what is kindof the outlook there? I think on
the offensive side of the ball, you have Brian Johnson replaces Fanistis. I

(09:56):
think continuity, there is no oneJella Hurts as he was a young kid,
so I think from that familiarity thingswould be Okay. I think it's
it's Sirianni's offense, so it'll beon Brian Johnson to bring some innovation to
the offense, you know, somethingplay calling. I think you'll see them
take more chances, do more thingsthat Hurts wants to do. In terms
of what we talked about in termsof the maturation, I think on defense,

(10:16):
you'll see decide be a little moreaggressive. I don't necessarily think it
would be from a blitzing standpoint, but I think you you may see one
or two less linebackers. You know. I think they're stacked up front,
like you said, in terms upto three four, I think you'll see
a five man front at times.I think you'll see a four man front.
But I think for him to gowould be to have four or five
guys up front, one linebacker attimes at five or six defensive backs.

(10:39):
Okay, So I think that's that'sthe switch you'll see in terms of you
know, guys being intangible, havingversatility and playing with a light box.
You suffered several key losses in freeagency. TJ like that linebacking court is
complete t. TJ. Edwards bearsbecause your white comes to Arizona where he
projects to be. TJ. Edwardsis what it looks like in that role.

(11:05):
Javon Hargrave leaves to the forty nineers. But you do bring back
Um, you do bring back variously. You do bring back Jason Kelsey.
You lose Isaac Samalo, you loseCJ. Garner Johnson Um. How impactful
are those losses? They're big.But I think in terms of when you

(11:26):
start looking at us, you're lookingat the big picture. You start looking
at compensatory draft picks. You startlooking at you know, additional assets.
You know, you start looking atthe fact that for a lot of those
guys, the replacement or the personthat was going to take that position was
already awaiting, you know, itwas already here. I think it's you
know, it's a little lighter, you know. I think, you know,
when you're able to reload, youget into Kobe Deine and then you

(11:46):
get some of the uh, youget a Nicholas Morrow, you get the
draft picks, you get, youget to two Georgia guys and things like
that. Nature it makes it okay. So it will be an adjustment.
I think getting Slay and Bradberry backwas huge. You know, you you
get Terrell Edmunds at safety. Youknow, from an efficiency standpoint, from
a discipline standpoint, he was probablya much better player than Gardener Johnson.

(12:07):
Maybe not the splash, I mean, not the interceptions, but in terms
of how he plays, with thediscipliney plays, I think it could be
an upgrade there. So you havesome losses, but I think for the
most part, depending on how Carterplays and how Jordan Davis plays, the
horror growth loss may not even becould be a minimal situation. What are
who were the impact games in youYou mentioned Tremaine Edmunds. Who else were

(12:31):
impact additions? Well, I thinkyou know Rashad Penny. It's definitely an
impact position if he could stay healthy. You got DeAndre Swift from via trade,
not necessarily free agency. So Ithink from that standpoint, you're stacked
on offense. Like I said,on defense, you have Greedy Williams,
so you have the potential for athird guy. You know, a guy
that has a pedigree coming out ofLSU. If he can stay healthy,

(12:52):
you have a third cornerback there. You have Justin Evans at safety as well.
You know it was healthy for theSaint slash year. Contavious Street is
a guy that could play defensive tackleed. So you have first facility,
you have high perch, you havea lot of things, different things going
on from that standpoint on defense, and then in the draft, obviously there

(13:13):
was the joke about how you onlydraft Georgia guys well with the addition to
Jordan Davis last year, and thenyou get j Jalen Carter. Were you
surprised that Carter was there at numbernine? For sure? I wasn't sure
if they'd have to trade up.I mean, you hear things and you
hear people talking. I wasn't surehe would get past the pairs. So
from that standpoint, you wanted him. You knew if you continued to drop,

(13:35):
we'd have a shot. But Iwasn't sure Chicago will let him go.
How high are you on him asan as a disruptor in the passing
game when he didn't have necessarily themetrics. That's when we were leading up
the draft. That was the kindof the one thing Jalen Carters like,
do you like, especially in thetop five, do you take a defensive

(13:56):
tackle who has little to know passpassword Lake. He's not in Dominican Zoe,
He's not Aaron Donald. Does hedo? Can he? Or is
he going to develop into something likea Quinnin Williams or will that take a
couple of years. I think he'lldevelop rather quickly. I think you have
the situation where you necessarily don't needhim to be a pass rusher. I

(14:18):
meant Jordan Davis, posentially I couldbe a better pass rusher than him because
of his explosiveness. So I thinkfor those two, you want them to
feed off of each other, youwant them to compliment each other. You
still have Fletcher Cox, You still, like we said, you have Contaguy
Street, you have Milton Williams. You have a rotation of guys that are
able to rush the passer, andthat'd be on Sean Dasai to figure out
when to implement those guys and whenthe roadsate them. But I think,

(14:39):
you know, in terms of theGeorgia guys, I think they'll be impactful
from day one. Nolan Smith, also in the first round, number thirty,
athletic freak. Where does he fit? He's built more like off the
ball, but has the speed likehe reminds me in some ways of Hassan

(15:00):
Reddick, but kind of the opposite, because he think he was he had
the pass rushing production and was builtmore for off the ball Smith played.
I guess I can think he playeda little more off the ball, but
at sciences you see this on Reddickand do you do that? But is
he going to be able to doReddick type of things? I think so.

(15:22):
I think though you would hope thathe could turn into a weak side
or off the ball version of aFred Warner, So you don't necessarily want
to put him in the middle.I mean, maybe you know in your
two or three you could start todo that in terms of schemes where he's
on the field with Reddick, ButI think you want to be able to
get him on the fill with Reddickat times. So in terms of using
him as a traditional edge rusher, you know, replacing you know, Brand

(15:43):
and Grand with him. So Ithink you'll have situations where you use him
as an edge rusher. I thinkyou'll see situations where they drop him into
covers because he's so athletic. Ithink you'll have situations where him and Reddick
will both be in the games andyou'll have two Sam linebackers coming off the
edge. So I think it allowsversatility, it allows a lot of dynamic
mchibrid situation is going on. ThenStopper as well. I'm sorry, so

(16:04):
From you definitely want to put himin a game because he's really efficient against
the run. He's one of thehighest graded run stoppers in college football last
year. From So, from thatstandpoint, he continues to add value offensive
lineman. So tackled Tyler Stein fromAlabama, safe safety Sydney Brown out of
Illinois, Kiley Ringo, cornerback outof Georgia, Stanford cornerback quarterback Tanner McKee.

(16:26):
In my opinion, that was probablythe wasted pick of the draft.
I don't I don't think much ofMcKee, And then I thought Morojoma was
going to go much higher in thedraft and you get him in round seven.
What do you think of those selectionsand where do they fit in now
and in the future. I likedthem all. I think a lot of
them are are similar to the lastyear. So you have a situation with

(16:48):
Tyler Stein where he might be ableto come in and start at right guard.
You have Cam Jergens to send asecond round pick from last year who's
expected to slip the right guard. So you have a lot of versatility there.
For some reasons that happens to GeorgeMalata. Tyler Stein just came out
of situation where he could play lefttackle. You have, so you have
a lot of guys that can dodifferent things. I think in terms of
Sydney Brown, he's the player towatch, you know, I've talked about,

(17:11):
you know, decide maybe using themas a star, you know,
potentially using them like Jalen Ramsey. But I think it'd be a situation where
you'll see him playing in the box. I think it allows for three safeties.
I think you can see a situationwhere you see him, Edmonds and
re Blanket Ship on the field atthe same time. So I think that's
a great pick. Keiley Ringo, you would hope that it's just a red
shirt season and he gets to learnfrom Brad Berry and Slay, But if

(17:33):
he comes in and shows that hecan become a third or fourth cornerback.
There's been some talking from potentially playingsafety, then that's a that's a benefit
there. I think in terms ofthe Joe Mo that's a guy you want
to see. I look at himas a younger Kentavia Street in terms of
visibility to play defensive tackle and slidedown to the ads some so, I
think even though he was drafted inthe seventh round, he's a player to

(17:55):
watch as well. Absolutely, comingnext on the Rise ups here with podcasts
or Colonel's talking about let's look aheadto the twenty twenty three season where Eagles
have high expectations. Let's talk aboutthat coming in extent risips you ready,
We're back on the rise ups hereat podcasts of Astara Cardinals talk on the
web. The Eagles entered twenty twentythree as one of the favorites in the
nfc U and one of the favoritesin the nfl M, one of the

(18:18):
elite teams. Jalen Hurts playing ata high level, brand new, you
know, gazillion dollar contract. Thereturning key veterans, their their cornerbacks.
You've got Fletcher Cox coming back foranother year, a guy that I thought
might maybe follow again into Arizona, but they chose not to go with old
guys at all. There, JasonKelsey comes back. You've got Georgia athletes

(18:41):
all over the field. You've gota running back situation again that looks incredibly
strong with her shod Penny and DeAndreSwift. Um um more as it didn't
um Boston come back as well, correct Boston Scott returns. And so you've
got a backfield that is low didand a quarterback who is incredible on the

(19:03):
quarterback sneak adding to that factor there, which if there's one thing, like
I'll say one thing about like howthe cardiof you use Kyslamer Kylers Murray is
not a big fan of the quarterbacksneak obvious for obvious reason. One.
They've almost play always in shotgun before. That'll change this year. And he
doesn't have the frame. He's justnot quite as big as Jalen Hurts.

(19:26):
That said, the way they builtthat offensive around him, I wish,
I wish I would have loved tosee Kyler running a type of situation.
But that said, we're talking aboutthe Eagles twenty twenty three. How high
are expectations and what will will fansbe Will fans be satisfied with anything other
than another super Bowl or potentially championship? Moms, it's the Eagles fan base.

(19:52):
So I think from you're gonna havesome that's gonna start to season out
a little bit pessimistic anyway, it'sfifty fifty. You have your pessimists,
you'll have your optimists. I thinkit's the toughest schedule in the league,
if not one of those, Soyou know the expectations. They may not
go fourteen and three. You don'twant to see a ten in seven season,
though, So I think from thatstandpoint, you don't want them to
fall off a cliff. I don'tthink there'll be a sea. I think

(20:15):
there's too much leadership, jail andhurts over different things like that for there
to be a Super Bowl hangover. But you certainly don't want them to,
you know, take two or threesteps back. So I think from that
standpoint that first game against the Patriotsto be important, and then you know,
winning the games you're supposed to.You have a rough stretch. You
know, you have the Cowboys inWeek nine, then there's a buy and
then there's like a six or sevenweek stretch up just impossible games and you

(20:37):
know that include the Bills, Chiefs, you know, and different things like
that. So I think it's survivingthat rough stretch and staying healthy for the
most part at some of the mostkey positions. So ceiling is obviously return
to the super Bowl, potential championship, correct reasonable expectations. What would it
be for me the expectations to getback to the playoffs. Definitely win the

(21:00):
division. You don't want a firstround exit. You're a hopeful of getting
to buy. But just to keepthat consistency, get back to the postseason.
Of course, you know you toimprove one last year, you'd have
to win the super Bowl. Butdefinitely just getting back to the playoffs,
staying consistent, no drop offs, the key areas and things like that.
What do you think their floor eliminating? Like not like Jalen Hurts getting hurt

(21:23):
because we saw what what that? Can we see what had happened to any
any team when they're starting to startquarterback gets hurt? Um if it's if
it's a reasonably healthy season, whatdoes the worst case scenario look like?
We're the Eagles, I think twelveand five, eleven and six, and
that's just like not that's just notgetting all the bounces and things not going

(21:44):
your way, but straight up talent, you know, game by game,
every one stage season will hurt.Healthy. It's alving five, it's the
worst she'll see. So that thatis that is quite the quite the season
of expectations when they're when their flooris double digit wins um and a first
round exit, that would probably theworst case scenario with the aside aside from
disastrous injuries, losing key stars atdifferent positions. But and then obviously Eagles

(22:11):
fans, I'm guessing, look atthat Week seventeen game against the Cardinals is
sort of just a speck on theschedule, basically a get well game before
the before the regular season finale.Um depends only you speak to. You
get some fans that really that reallywant to win that game by like forty
and they could caroless about getting readyfor the playoffs. But with everything that

(22:33):
with Gannon and him taking rollis withthem, and I think Siriannie felt some
type of way about that and thenthe way he left. So Darrell,
there will be some build up forit now. You hopeful that Colin Murray
is healthy enough to play and thatthe Cardinals are in a good enough position
to wear the game account. ButI think regardless, you're gonna see starters
play that game, and certain peopleare going to play with any emotion and

(22:56):
an intensity and and they'll want tolike really run the score up, guys.
