the Web. I'm your host JessRoot from cardswire dot com and this episode
four hundred and sixty two, itis the bonus I'm We're gonna call it
(00:45):
bonus episode. But where we havefor the second time this season. Now
in week two we bring on webring on a guest that isn't Seth Cox,
our normal co host. We havea guest from Giants dot Com.
Dan Benton, the managing editor overthere is the Cardinals host the the New
York Football Giants. This week andweek two, Dan, glad to have
(01:08):
you. I believe you were onone of the summer shows. I did
what a couple three probably for thetwenty twenty game. I think when in
the off season I seem to think, yeah I do, I do,
recall yeah, I actually was onhere before I don't remember what must have
been during the COVID season as Icall it. Yeah, that wasn't you
(01:32):
know, speaking of crazy things,COVID COVID year, that was weird.
But yeah, So the Cardinals andGiants long time, long time opponents,
back to nineteen twenty six. Now, none of neither one of us go
go back that far. But weare among the older ones of our I
believe we're among the older ones ofour of our groups. And I'm sure.
(01:59):
And so the Cardinals and the Giantshave while the Giants, like I
think the all time series is eightyand forty six and two against the Cardinals.
It's been twelve years since the Giantsbeat the Cardinals. What is there?
(02:20):
Is that just a weird time?I know the Giants tep some has
had some great seasons, some badseasons, and the Cardinals have been mediocre.
They've been good some years, butyou know, four times dating back
twelve years, over the last twelveyears and not pick up a win over
a team that's been largely considered nota great team. It's been a while
since since the it predates let's seetwenty eleven. Was that that that predates?
(02:46):
Nope, that doesn't predate that wasstill that was still ELI right in
twenty was ELI. That was thelast Super Bowl team for the Giants.
So yeah, and in this game, it's an expected to be a bad
Cardinals team against a Giants team thatwas in the playoffs last year. I
kind of want to take let's talka little bit about from about from last
(03:08):
season because how much how did theGiants overachieved last year? How much more
could Brian Dable get out of theteam that than what they got last year?
It felt like outside New York andthis is this is from all the
way across the country perspective, Idid feel like, for lack of a
(03:30):
better word, that the Giants werea bit of a they were maybe a
fraud playoff team like the Vikings, and then that have them win a playoff
game, of course, that firstround playoff game playing against the Vikings,
and you've got who's the bigger who'sthe player? Who is the team that
is the bigger fake when it comesto the postseason, and it ended up
(03:51):
being they ended up being the Vikingswith their gazillion wins, they lose in
the first round, and that continueson. How was the Brian Dable year
one last year, Well, givenwhat the Giants had just come out of
with Joe Judge, it was avery welcome change, no doubt about that.
(04:12):
But I don't know if I'd goas far as to call it a
fraud season, just because Brian dayBall is such a good head coach.
He really is, and he reallygenuinely had that team prepared, he had
them fighting, he had them scrapping. There's there's no doubt that their roster
was underwhelmed. To be kind aboutit. There they were lacking in almost
(04:33):
every single area, particularly a receiveralong the offensive line of course, at
you know, inside linebacker, depthand the secondary was obviously an issue.
That there were just holes all overthe place. So to get that much
out of what he had, youknow, that's why he went on to
win Coach of the Year. Thatwas very much a deserving honor for him.
(04:56):
Again, I wouldn't I wouldn't goas far as to call them a
fraud all that he want stand thesediment, the sentiment, but you know
they did over overachieve. Well that'sthat's what it felt like. Yeah,
Brian Dable got about like he goteverything that that roster could have gotten right,
Yeah, yeah, absolutely, Imean you could not possibly have squeezed
anything else out of that limit. There was there was nothing left. It
(05:17):
was bone dry at the end.And that's that's a credit to him,
and that's a credit to the coach, to staff. They did a tremendous
job and they did it with verylittle help. They really did. That's
also why expectations coming into this seasonwere were so much higher, only to
have them squashed horribly. Oh mygosh, what happened with one? So
obviously Dallas an incredibly talented team, but that that game forty and nothing.
(05:45):
That what I'm sure you've you've you'veheard and seen the stat that no other
team previously had had what was it, seven sacks and there's a field goal
blocked for a touch and none ofnone of those things had ever happened to
attain in an entire season this season, and it happened to the Giants in
a week one. We'll just getit out, We'll get it out of
(06:06):
the way. It's all happened ina week one. Yeah, they they
had set that bar before the gameitself was even over. It was as
amazing, truth be told, andagain, it's kind of remarkable that I'm
about to say this, given whatI just said about Brian Dable. It
was in my twenty plus years ofcovering the New York Giants, it was
(06:26):
the worst beating that I've ever seen, and in a lifetime as a Giants
fan, because I'm I'm blessed enoughto be a Giants fan and cover the
Giants. It was probably arguably theworst performance I've ever seen a period,
and that's saying something considering I livedmy informative years through the Dave Brown era,
and that was absolutely horrendous. Youknow, Cardinals fans may not be
(06:51):
familiar with that name or Graham. They both started for the Cardinals in the
name. Oh yeah, that's right, that's right. I forgot that.
Yeah, so you did experience thatas we did. We experienced anybody that
remotely could have been a decent quarterbacker. Hope they would be like like Chris
(07:11):
Chandler, Dave Brown, Jay Schrader, Steve Burrowince Ken Graham. We we
got that. We got the carcassesof boomeris Science and and Dave Craig.
The nineties as a car Cardinals vanwas terrible. I completely forgot that Dave
from well, that's a that's aterrible thing to share, But I mean,
(07:34):
really that tells you the story abouthow bad that Week one loss was.
When I started, you know, looking back in history and thinking,
you know, there there were DaveBrown error games that weren't that bad.
It was it was almost Joe Judgeesque. Like I joked this week that
I've seen games where the Giants runback to back quarterback sneaks only to punt
(07:56):
the ball that were more impressive ofa game than what we saw on on
Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys. So I mean everything, and we'll talk
about this and behind enemy lines thisweek, everything that could go wrong did
go wrong. It was a completeand total team failure from top to bottom.
And there's not a single person player, coach, or executive who escapes
playing for that performance. So thethings had happened, how much of that
(08:22):
was just the perfect storm of justa really bad matchup with it with the
Dallas team that that looks to beincredibly tough this year, and Dallas is
coming to town next week and sowe're staring down the potential beat down that
that's one of those Yeah, there'sno chance games that, you know,
(08:45):
kind of the measuring stick is didthat just magnify every weakness that the that
the Giants have and just maximized itto the to the extreme. Oh,
there's there's no doubt about it.They completely should put the blueprint out there
for every NFL team to see exactlywhat you have to do against the Giants.
(09:05):
Now, the NFL's as you know, covering it for so long is
kind of a crazy place because thingsreally drastically can change week to week,
and what happened on Sunday night iswas really like the perfect mixture of absolutely
everything going right for the Cowboys andabsolutely everything going wrong for the Giants.
Like you know it again, inthe NFL, there's usually one or two
(09:28):
plays that make the difference in agame, no more of what the what
the scoreboard says at the end. It's the games are always much closer and
it could be boiled down to afew things more than it seems to the
outside perspective. But that wasn't thecase on Sunday night at all. Every
play outside of that first drive, with the exception of the third down snap
(09:48):
that led to the field goal thatwas blocked and returned pretty much from that
bad snap on that third down onit was a display of futility the likes
of which I've never seen for theGiants, and the kind of do a
nation from the Cowboys that was facilitatedby those mistakes, and probably not the
level of domination you'll see from themgoing forward. So the reality always falls
(10:09):
somewhere in between when it comes tothose things. So are the Cowboys as
good as they seemed? Probably not, but they're still pretty darn good.
And are the Giants as bad asthey seemed? Probably not, but they
are pretty darn bad. So again, it was just kind of the perfect
storm for the Cowboys, the worstkind of disaster for the Giants. And
again, you know, we'll seein the coming weeks whether the Cowboys really
(10:33):
are that dominant. They're good, there's no doubt about it. That front
seven is is dangerous and it's goingto propel them a long way. But
I don't necessarily believe that they're asdumbinant as they were and they appeared in
that game. And I don't believethe Giant although they are bad as they
appeared in that game either. Comingon next in the Resis Here Podcast,
(10:54):
invester of Colonel's talking about let's let'smove ahead. What do the Giants look
like? Not from last week? That's got our next and Residents he read
We're back on the Residents. Heread podcast best Eric Cardinal Stock on the
web. So I kind of wantto look that that's what makes that matchup
Last week hard, we saw aGiant's team that was that was all sa
(11:16):
Quon was and and the success thatDaniel Jones had last year felt like it's
because they're just hey, don't domuch, and that made him a much
more efficient quarterback, didn't turn theball over badly, really for the first
time in his career, was areally effective quarterback. But is this year
(11:37):
an all se Quon offense? Iknow the guys added, he added a
couple of guys. Paris Campbell decentplayer. Uh, Darren Waller when he's
healthy, he's really really good. But what type of what do what do
the Giants now offer offensively? Whatcan we expect to see in Week two?
And I know that Waller and AndrewThomas or probably gonna be questionable for
(12:01):
game. And I don't know howquestionable it is since they got all in
the practice field on Thursday. Doyou think they'll play one two? What
does the offense look like with orwithout them? Well, there's a lot
to unpack their Going back to lastyear quickly, it was the say Quan
show early on in the season, and there's no doubt about that. The
(12:22):
Giants wrote him hard, probably toohard to the point where the wheels came
off, because when you start lookingfurther on down the season last year,
it really became more of the DanielJohns show than the Sequon Barkley show.
He Sequon kind of lost his touchwhen it came to breaking tackles, making
those big game changing plays. Hisyards were carried dipped considerably. His late
(12:45):
game rushing was abysmal, and itreally was Daniel Johns who was forced to
carry the weight on his shoulder, and he largely did that with his legs.
And going into this season there wasdisbelief that there was going to be
this natural, evolute where he wasgoing to take and build upon that success
that he had, but be ableto produce more through the air thanks to
(13:07):
the additions of the Paris campbell ofJalen Hyatt, the rookie speedster of Darren
Wooler, and the problem with thattheory is in order for that to happen,
you need to pass protect and theGiants just cannot do that to any
degree whatsoever. And that is sortof throwing a wrench into what was the
initial plans for this team, whichwas going to be a more traditional spread
(13:31):
offense taking deep shots down the field, because, believe it or not,
contrary to popular belief, Daniel Jonesis one of the best deep ball passers
in the NFL. When he doesit, he just doesn't do it that
much, largely because the team isstruggled with separation, so struggled with spacing,
and you know, they were forcedto rely on on Saquan so often,
especially earlier last year, given howpoorly the offensive line played in the
(13:54):
first game. If that continues tobe the trend for the Giants, they're
going to have to do. They'regonna have no choice but to try and
operate similarly to how they did lastyear. And that's right, sit Quan
when they can and use Daniel Jonesand his legs to kind of create momentum
plays and keep the chains moving. That's not ideally what they want to do,
but again, like I said,it, may be what they're forced
(14:15):
to do. And that's especially trueof Andrew Thomas, who, although he
did return on Thursday, I don'texpect him to play on Sunday, largely
because there's an immediate turnaround and theyhave to play on Thursday night against the
forty nine ers and that pass rush. So I would expect him to sit
out just even if he is ableto play, and expect him to sit
out of a matter of precaution. The good news is that Darren Waller is
going to play on Sunday. Hereally had more of a rest day on
(14:41):
Thursday than it was related to hishamstring. He's still moving well. But
again, you can't utilize player likethat if you can't keep the quarterback on
a steep in the pocket. Andthe Giants, you know, they have
a real problem with that right now, which is only compounded not just by
the Andrew Thomas injury, but bythe Matt Pert injury because he's unable to
play, and let's just be honest, he's not that great of a player
(15:01):
to begin with. They're going tohave to use a guard at left tackle
and that's just going to be adisaster, right And it's interesting because me
and my co hosts were talking andit isn't it feel like well Andrew Thomaso,
who a guy that that struggled abit his rookie year. He's fans
should like him more, right, fan should like they should they should like
(15:24):
him more. And from what Ihear is that fans are pretty done with
Evan Neil. How has he developedso far? He hasn't. He hasn't
developed at all, as a matterof fact, and that's one of the
most concerning problems. He's got himselfphysically into much better shape than he was
a year ago. He certainly looksthe part, but he's not playing the
role. Like he went into thegame against Dallas thumping his chest about how
(15:46):
he was going to go out thereand get redemption because he played so poorly
against him last season. It wasactually the worst performance of his entire career.
And then he had an even worseperformance against him on Sunday night.
And I know there are a lotof people who are kind of pumping the
brakes on calling him a bust, and he hasn't even played sixteen regular season
gameshet while that may be true, there's just been no improvement whatsoever. He's
(16:11):
getting beat on simple, simple things, simple ways that he shouldn't be completely
blowing assignments with and on blocks likeit really is almost like it has to
be a mental issue at this pointfor him rather than a physical one.
Because physically he's an imposing guy. He's a big, strong, prototypical kind
of tackle that should be able to, you know, excel, especially given
(16:33):
his athleticism, because he is veryathletic for his size, but just mentally,
he just doesn't seem to be there. And that's not a knock on
him personally, because he is avery intelligent person. In fact, he's
an extremely intelligent person. But it'salmost like it's just gotten to his head
at this point where he's beating himselfrather than the players across from him or
beating him. And in the NFL, that can spiral and if you don't
(16:56):
get a handle on it quickly,it can end careers. Defensively, what
can we expect to see? Whatis what is Wink Martindale brought and what
will that defense look like? Iknow week one not a not a good
measure of things, but you've gotone of the most disruptive interior defenders and
(17:17):
Dexter Lawrence, Leonard Williams is stillthere. A Shawn Robinson is a fine
player. What what are the Giantsdefensive strengths and how are how do you
see them basically deposing everyone in whatthe defense will look like this coming season?
(17:41):
I think I think ideally, whatlike Wink would like to see out
of that defense is traditional Wink, and that's going to be extremely aggressive,
blitz heavy, play the game fast, and you know, basically keep constant
pressure on the quarterback at all times. The problem that the Giants are running
into, just as they ran intoit last year, is that the outside
(18:03):
linebackers cabon Thibodeaux Azizogelari even when he'son the field, they're not creating the
kind of natural pressure that Wink needsto in order to maximize those safety blitzes,
those corner blitzes, those linebacker blitzes, because then you're just leaving your
cornerbacks out to dry. At thatpoint. Dexter Lawrence has obviously helped a
great degree because he's able to collapsethe pocket from the inside, but until
(18:26):
those outside linebackers start getting around thecorners and putting pressure on the quarterbacks that
way, it really handicaps Wink andwhat he's able to do. And you
saw that last week against the Cowboyswhere he actually moved away from the blitz,
which is something that you would neverthink that Wink would ever do.
But he just couldn't continue to leavehis rookie cornerbacks on an island out there.
(18:47):
And that's really unfortunate because at somepoint or another, those guys that
Wink is relying so heavily on,these talented players that they are need to
start kind of stepping up. Andwe're looking at Cabon Thibodeau at this point
and kind of thinking in the sameway that we're looking at Evan Neil and
thinking, it's like, at whatpoint are these guys going to put it
together? Because right now they're hurtingthe team. They're not they're not helping
the team. And if they wereable to, if Cavan was able to
(19:11):
turn that corner, who knows. The sky is the limit for the Giants
defense, because they're extremely fast, they're extremely aggressive. When you look across
the board at the NFL, theGiants have on average the highest RAS score
per player on defense of any teamin the NFL because they are that athletic
and bringing over Isaiah Simmons, whoI'm sure we'll talk about in a second,
(19:33):
kind of fits that bill as well, because he's way high on that
RAS scale in terms of pure athleticismand speed and what the giants could be
able to do under a wink isyou know who knows? Like I said,
the sky is the limit. Butwhat they are doing right now is
nowhere near what they're capable of.And that's largely because the outside linebackers,
the edge guys just simply are notgenerating natural pressure. Isaiah Simmons is the
(19:57):
next topic of conversation, that is, well, we know what Simmons can
do over here. He apparently wasnot quite a cultural fit for what they
wanted. He was real close withDeAndre Hopkins. Uh there was he there
was the kind of a talk heif you want to be here. Of
(20:18):
course, Carlos didn't exercise his hisfifth year option, and I think that
soured him a little bit, andso he was not He was not didn't
have that fire in his belly. Is As people have made fun of Jonathan
Gannet's speech to acquire him for solittle, what is what is sort of
the hope that he can do,and from it, what it appears in
(20:41):
week one is that his impact wasminimal. The talent is there, He's
able to do a lot of things, he wasn't dominant at any point.
What what is kind of the rolethat that you envisioned Simmons having and what
sort of impact do you think hecan or will have and moving forward once
he's had you know, a fewweeks of practicing. Yeah, I think
(21:06):
the sample size last week it's kindof rough to evaluate, largely because he
was in a brand new system. He's only had a very short amount of
time to figure out that defensive playbookthey put in a package for him.
You know, it was again,it was very limited. He obviously was
struggling with what he was given becausethere were several instances where he watched him
on the field and he was clearlyconfused about what his assignment was. The
(21:27):
saving grace was, of course, that his athleticism and speed allowed him to
overcome those issues. In the moment, he was able to chase down the
offenders that he was supposed to beon where he was assigned, so he
kind of avoided the catastrophic error, which I suppose is a plus when you
think about it, given how littleexperience he had in the system. But
as far as what his role isgoing to be moving forward, the ideas
(21:49):
for him to be a starter,He's probably going to assume the inside linebacker
role, but that doesn't necessarily meanwhat it does for other teams. Wink
is a true position list, defensiveplayer, defensive coordinator. Every player on
his defense is going to play differentroles at different times. So you'll see
Simmons all over the field inside linebacker, outside linebacker, cornerback, safety,
(22:11):
you might even see him line upon the inside in like a NASCAR package
or something like that. Given youknow, given a specific scenario. That's
what Wink envisions for Simmons long term. They want to rely heavily on his
athleticism and speed and hope that mentallyhe absorbs the system itself. He learns
those different roles and he's sort ofable to excel beyond what he was doing
(22:33):
in Arizona. But again, youknow, for a player like that,
when you start having these forty nothingbeat downs, it's easy to lose that
kind of motivation and then he fallsback into old habits, which is,
you know, obviously what the concernwill be with him moving forward if the
Giants can't right the ship. Comingto next on the resid here at podcast
Best Colonel's talking a whip, let'slook at the actual matchup picks, predictions
(22:56):
and all that sort of stuff that'scoming to next and rise ups. He
read We're back on the rise ofthe hero at podcasts Best Cardinals talk on
the web talking with Dan Benton ofGiants while they're managing at it over there.
This game this weekend, I amthis is a game that Cardinals fans
look at with some optimism, andI know Giants fans probably look at it
(23:21):
as as a way to get right. But at the same time, the
things that the Giants struggled with lastweek are the things that the Cardinals did
very well in their in their firstweek against the Commanders, which following up
with a game against the forty nineErs. If they don't get it right,
(23:42):
Giants could be looking at an Owenthree start right, this is a
must win game for the Giants,There's no other way to put it.
You don't often say that about aweek two games. A week two game
against the team that's expected to bebad. Yeah, you have to have
to win. There's no other wayaround it. There's no way to sugarcoat
that. If the Giants lose thisgame, they're season's over. That's just
the reality of it. Because you'vegot San Francisco coming the week after that.
(24:04):
Let's just be honest. The Giantsplaying the way they are with that
offensive line, they're not going towin that game. If they do,
it'll be the craziest upset probably atthe NFL season. You know. Then
they move on to Seattle, whichis certainly a winnable game, but then
they're at Miami and at Buffalo, and granted, Buffalo looked pretty rough and
the season opener, but Miami,on the other hand, looked pretty explosive.
(24:26):
So you kind of look at thosegames like, let's say, at
best, they're fifty fifty games,So the Giants could very easily be looking
at a one in five start oroh it's sixth start if they don't win
this game. So you know, for that, for that reason alone,
this this is an absolute must wingame. Well, and from our perspective
over here Washington, which was amaybe winnable game they did they should have
(24:48):
won. They should have won basedon what we saw last week defensive they
should have won. The Giants gameis as close with it because if the
Cardinals don't pick up that first winon Sunday, it's not coming for a
while. Because they played Dallas,San Francisco, Cincinnati, the Rams,
the Seahawks. Then then Baltimore said, it's then you look at it might
(25:12):
not be to like Week nine andthat's even Cleveland on the road. So
I do look at this game andbecause of what the Cardinals did in Week
one and because of the problems thatthe Giants had, it might be a
(25:33):
very tough match. The problem isCardinals offense is garbage with Josh Dobbs a
quarterback, and the question is goingto be do they avoid turnovers? The
matchup I'm I'm really interested in seeingis basically everything along the offensive line.
(25:56):
The Cardinals got what I think ifyou look at their defense line, they
had their front three they combined forlike three sacks and seventeen tackles and had
a fumble recoverment a touchdown. Theygot six sacks from five different players.
Dennis Gardeck, a guy that hadsome success a couple in twenty twenty,
(26:21):
and and well, and the factthat Daniel Jones has been sacked fourteen times,
and then, granted there were differentdefenses, but they've been sacked fourteen
times in two games against the Cardinalsin his career. Coming off a seven
sack game in Week one where theCardinals had six sacks, I look at
that and go, okay, thatis that is the difference right there.
If they can limit say Quan whichthey did against Antonio Gibson and Brian Robinson
(26:45):
last week, then the Cardinals havea chance. And I will admit,
dating back to when the schedule firstcame out, I thought that this was
going to be the game that theCardinals sneak home opener. You know,
you could have should use that that. I didn't expect the Giants to be
(27:06):
coming in potentially as desperate as theyare. But what are some of the
matchups that you look at as askind of the key ones. Well,
I think he touched on it rightout of the gate. They're kind of
looking at the Giants offensive line versusyou know, the Cardinals front seven and
what they're capable or able to dothere. Again, without Andrew Thomas,
(27:27):
that becomes a lot more sketchy. And I did watch all of the Cardinals
sacks from last week, and therewere a couple of them that concerned me
because it's largely the same problems thatthe Giants have. There were also a
couple though, where like Howel waskind of just running outside the pocket and
just went out of bound short ofthe line of scrimmage, and they were
(27:48):
kind of credited with a sack.Daniel Jones not going to do that.
He's not going to have these twofast for that. He'll caught that corner
and go up the sideline. SoI wouldn't contribute that as like a potential
Daniel Jones sack. But still,if we're able to clapse the you know,
the interior pocket, push Daniel Jonesat the outside, and these guys
aren't getting separation down the field, they're going to run into a lot of
the same problems that you saw againstDallas. Now, hopefully Daniel Jones wants
(28:11):
to make the same mistake he madein the first game of trying to force
past down the field for an interception, which was uncharacteristic of what he's become,
So hopefully he can eliminate that mistake. But still there's the potential for
the Giants to give up a significantamount of pressure to a team that,
although they may not be as talentedand aggressive as the Cowboys in the front
seven, it can certainly mess upthe entire game, especially as you said,
(28:34):
if they're keenan on's the quantatick ina way to run, because then
all that's left at that point isDaniel Jones and his legs. And you
know, we saw him win acouple of games that way last year,
but that trend can't continue. It'sthe NFL and that's just not how it
works. The Daniel Jones prop ofthirty four and a half rushing yards,
(28:55):
that's an easy bet, right right, That is easy one as well for
me if the Cardinals, like Ithink, I think that the defense that
the Cardinals have is underrated and underappreciated. I felt like I saw it
a little bit with the starters inthe preseason, but they played like five
(29:17):
series total and they were solid. They're real disciplined, and so I was
like, Okay, I've got there'sa little bit of hope. Then what
they do They did what they didin Week one, and I'm like,
Okay, this offense is terrible, and so I I see this as a
very ugly game, although I wouldI would say that probably that even with
(29:41):
Dexter Lawrence, that that the Giantsare a slight downgrade up front, especially
well overall, then what they didagainst Washington Washingtons a very good physical defense
up front. And so if theCardinals, if Josh Dobbs doesn't turn the
ball over or or if they don'thave if he can make one play instead
(30:03):
of zero plays last year last week, that this has the potential to be
an ugly, gross Cardinals win.But even if it is not a win,
I think it's going to be agross, yucky game in general because
I don't think the Cardinals can playpretty right now. I don't know if
(30:26):
you read my answers to Behind theEnemy Lines yet, but I basically said
the same thing as far as thisgame, Like, I don't know what
people in Vegas are thinking. Ireally don't well giving giving giving them,
well the lines down to four, but given them for a half. I
was like and that that that that'sand writing off that that's why I'm for
(30:47):
my for sportsbook choir my my underdogscall him. I have like the Cardinals
there, that's not going to bethat now, I know. I think
the Cardinals can sneak this which willbe which will be really bad for the
Giant see in because I don't seethe Cardinals picking up another win until mid
season, and so that's that's kindof the as competitive as they were last
(31:10):
week, if they don't get towin this week, I don't know when
that win's coming. Yeah, Now, well I kind of feel that way
maybe for both of these teams. So it's it's a desperate game in Week
two. It's either way though, whoever wins and whoever loses, this game
is not gonna be a pretty gamein the one. There's just no way
around that. It's just the realityof what this game is gonna be.
Yeah, I have it twenty seventeenor twenty three, twenty you and I
(31:33):
know what you put on on behindhim was nineteen seventeen in nineteen seven.
Oh, but yeah, it's gonnabe a slot of a game. There's
no doubt it is. That's justthe way it's gonna be with these two
teams. So I think the Giantsare gonna sneak it out because they have
to sneak it out, and BrianDabole will have his team aware of the
fact that they need to win thisgame, and I think that's going to
(31:56):
be the difference in there. Ithink Daniel Jones probably gonna do some stuff
with his legs just to make ithappen. But it ain't gonna be pretty.
It's gonna be an ugly game forall four Quarters's gonna be a lot
of bad football, a lot.I expect a lot of turnovers, if
I'm being completely honest. All right, Yeah, it's gonna be just gonna
be ugly. It's gonna come downto the last second, maybe like a
forty something yard you know, Grahamgonno field goal that punches it through as
(32:19):
long as it doesn't get blocked andreturn from the touchdown again. But that's
the kind of game that Giants makinghistory again blocks for touchdowns two consecutive weeks.
Oh my gosh. Yeah. Unfortunately, I don't expect it to be
pretty. But that's gonna be.That's gonna be on both sides. I
suppose. Well, if it wereCoult McCoy, Okay, Coulte McCoy and
(32:43):
Jonathan Gannon basically came out and saidCoult McCoy's washed up and that's why they
cut him. Now, Cult McCoy'sliving his best life right now, has
has TV jobs lined up on theweekends, and he's being paid too in
a quarter million of guaranteed salary tonot play football this year. Even a
washed eye, I still think awash up Colt McCoy is a better option
(33:04):
than a healthy Josh Dobbs, becauseJosh Jobs is smart. But even an
old Colt McCoy is a better playmakerthan Dobbs. And that's the part that
the Cardinals if they if there isgood, if they continue their defensive play,
that will be what the problem isis that Dobbs isn't a playmaker and
they don't make enough plays offensively. And I saw this in the off season
(33:27):
as Colton McCoy stealing a win fromthe Giants, as the Cardinals over the
last over the last decade have beenstealing wins with backups against the Cardinals Drew
Stanton in twenty fourteen and in twentyseventeen beating his beating the Giants, and
then you know Colt McCoy coming intoit would be a perfect opportunity for him
(33:49):
to pick up a win against hisformer former team. It was all wind
up, really nice, and andyeah, but this is gonna be honest,
if Colt McCoy was starting, Imight feel different about the outcome of
this game. Like traditionally don't playgood against backup quarterbacks anyway, So I
mean, it's entirely possible for Dobbs. Okay, well, well let's look
at it that way, because Dobbs, even though he's a starter, he's
(34:10):
a backup. And jeez, Istill don't I've never been soap like,
I'm not a critical guy about theCardinals. I'm an optimistic that this is
this is the team I grew upwatching, and so but the Dobbs mood,
I'm like, what do you see? What do you see in Josh
Dobbs. He's been in the leaguesince twenty seventeen. He's played in nine
(34:30):
games, and he had two weirdstarts last year for Tennessee. We saw
what he was last week against theagainst the command I still do that.
I still say Redskins when I doit too. Listen, he grew up
inc That's just the way that itis. But yeah, so yeah,
(34:52):
Josh Dobbs not I mean, smartguy, good guy. He also also
here he has a bunch of fanswho hate him. Because he was committed
to Arizona State until the last minuteand then like eleventh hour, switched to
Tennessee. So I have some friendbecause I've seen to tickets to Arizona State.
He looks where I went to school, and there are there are guys
(35:15):
we're talking what this is two thousandif as we're talking twelve years ago,
and there are people who are stillThey're like Josh Dobbs, we hate him.
He left a sour tasting them out. Now, see this is where
he's got to win them all backover, and so he brings something home.
I don't know if the Sun Doublefans are gonna do that, because
(35:36):
like the Sun Double fans, theydon't care that much about the Cardinals.
So so it's it's basically no,no such luck for him. Man,
He's just gonna get booed by hisown guys. But hey, listen,
Daniel Jones and Eli Manning knows somethingabout being booed by their own people.
And he didn't do any of that. They didn't do any of the eleventh
hours stuff. So yeah, yeah, NFL fans they're harsh, man,
(35:57):
they are they are They're harsh,They're hard, but you know, I'm
sure you know who knows you knowwhere the Cardinals are are sitting and looking
ahead. I hate to say itbecause you don't. You never want to
say it about any team, butmaybe they're already looking like, hey,
let's get that number one pick, you know, and Josh Dobbs maybe our
best option. They go for thatone. It's hard. It's hard to
(36:19):
argue against that. When they're startingquarterback. Decision is to go get a
guy that has two career starts.I keep saying they're not trying to,
but everything they do seems to.When when they cut DeAndre Hopkins, they
cut Colt McCoy, they trade away, I said, it's Simmons. Now.
I get their valid reasons, butthere were moves all through the off
(36:39):
season when you're like, that's nota football move, Like you just made
your team worse, Like DeAndre Hopkinsnot on the team, you're a worse
football team with the al DeAndre Hopkins. And I get the culture part of
that, you know, going fromIsaiah Simmons to Cavan Wallace at safety,
that's that's a that's a down gradefootball wise. When you cut Colt McCoy,
(37:05):
who's been with the team, alloffseason to go with Josh Dobbs and
his two career starts in six seasonsto start with two weeks of practice,
that's a that's a downgrade football move. So as much as I'd like to
think that the Cardinals are not tryingto be the worst team in the NFL,
the actions say otherwise, and sothey just every everything goes like everything
(37:28):
I've been saying is like, butJess, look at the team. I'm
like, I said, I know, but they're not trying to lose.
But then it looks like they're tryingto lose. It's a boy there.
