Jared Finberg, who does.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
A little bit of everything about from all the places
s I.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
He covers the Panthers, he covers the the Rams, he
covers the Jaguars. Uh, and he's our Panthers guy Uh
from the Panthers Wire.

Speaker 4 (01:12):
So Jared, welcome back.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
It seems like it was just the other day and
I realized it's been a solid two months since it's
been a couple of months last time.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Yeah, I'm I'm glad to be back on here. We
did this last season for Arizona's trip to Carolina. That
was a fantastic football game to watch. I think for
both teams, I mean.

Speaker 4 (01:34):
The Panthers or the Panthers, Yes.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Absolutely, I think if you're a true if you're a
true football fan out that was just a great game
to watch. I mean, both teams having runs of scores
and everything between it. It was. It was a fun matchup.
And hopefully we get that same matchup, that same type
of back and forthness this upcoming weekend.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Yep, so we get we're gonna talk thirst.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
Now, what we're gonna start with is we're gonna start
with Week one and that's that. Unfortunately, wasn't very That
wasn't very pretty. The Cardinals had an ugly win. But
the Panthers had a terribly ugly loss twenty six to
ten to the Jacksonville Jaguars, in which they did really
nothing well. They didn't look good offensively. Defensively, they were

(02:22):
run all over. But you know, going back to the
to the game last year, that was the only loss
the Cardinals had to a team that didn't lose, who
that didn't win ten or more games. That's what that
last season that the Panthers game was kind of the
the the stake in the heart that kind of ended
their season. They ailt it that if they had won

(02:45):
that game, that still wouldn't so they needed to win.
They need to either beat the Rams or the Seahawks
in one of those two matches. But the Panthers game
was the rough one. Because there are other losses you
could look and say, okay, because Cardinals being a fairly
media team last year, they beat the teams they should
have beat, and they lost to teams that were that
ended up in the season being better than them and

(03:07):
were in the playoffs or one double digit games. So
we look at what the Cardinal. Though the Cardinals and
the Panthers don't have a great history. For the Cardinals,
they would. I think the Panthers have won seven of
the last eight matchups. But that's all we're talking about.

Speaker 4 (03:19):
Yet.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
Look back, tell us, tell us what happened in Week
one against the Jaguars twenty six to ten. When I
looked back at it, I'm like, oh, oh, the Jaguars
are good. Oh the Trevor Lawrence didn't play particularly well.
Two hundred rushing yards. Oh oh, Jags ran for two
hundred oh three Torner of us Bright, Bryce Young, Oh no,
what happened in Week one?

Speaker 1 (03:42):
Everything that could have gone bad for the Panthers went
bad in Week one. It basically turned into what the
worst of the Caroline Panthers from last year basically showed
up again this year, or at least for Week one.
The Panthers just got ran over by Liam Cohen's offense.

(04:04):
And credit to Liam Cohene, he's one of the most creative,
if not the most creative run game play caller out there.
The motions, the shifts, the designs, the concepts that he
deployed against the Carolina Panthers linebackers absolutely toyed with them.
Trevin Wallace was arguably one of the worst players for

(04:25):
the Panthers. I would say maybe the worst Panther On Sunday,
he basically bit the cheese on any motion, any fake
it was. It was downright horrendous from Trevin Wallace, who
had apparently had a very good camp. Now Panther fans

(04:46):
were allowed at training camp because the facilities and Charlotte
were being worked on, so fans weren't allowed. That meant
mainly the media was allowed to go and give and
ship they're observations, but really the Panthers, Panther fans had
only seen the first three preseason the only three preseason games,

(05:10):
and also Week one, and it's not been good. No
wins to hang your hat on, nothing to feel full
optimistic about what could come for comings for coming weeks.
It was just it was not the game the Panthers
needed to start out. They got out coached on both

(05:32):
sides of the ball. They were it. It's almost like
they weren't prepared, but they didn't exactly come out flat.
I thought they came out pretty physical against Jacksonville. It
was starting to become really just a tight, physical ball
game before a lightening lightning delay, and then right after that,

(05:53):
the Panthers had an offensive drive that stalled, get the
ball back to Travis Etn who had that seventy one
yard run, and it was basically an avalanche. It was
an avalanche from there. So the Panther struggled defensively against
the run. I thought they were good in the secondary
for the most part. I think that's going to be
a strength offensively. Bryce did have three turnovers, but after

(06:17):
watching the tape, I thought he was bad, but wasn't
as bad as people thought. I would definitely say Week
one last year was ten times worse than Week one
this year because Bryce looked he still showed a little
bit of what we saw towards the end of last season.
With Bryce. It was accurate on all three levels. He

(06:41):
had a reliable weapon into Taro McMillan. He had playmakers
that just weren't stepping up to the plate. Savior League
get their first round pick from about.

Speaker 4 (06:52):
Two years ago.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
Now, it was just it was just a cascade effect
for Carolina, and it was It's really hard to put
into words what happened in that game because it was
nothing I expected. It was nothing I think anyone on
the team expected. So they got out coached, they got

(07:16):
out played by Jacksonville, fair and square, and now they
have to move on to this matchup against Arizona on
the road in Arizona, and the Cardinals are expected to
be a pretty solid football team this year, and I'm
looking forward to hearing what you think of this team

(07:36):
after one week. You know, I think this is more
of an extension of the preseason. So I guess both
teams are starting out a little bit rougher than expected
against opponents either they should be or they should have
beaten or should have beaten big time. So I'm looking
forward to this conversation, but also, you know, I'm not

(07:59):
ready to hit the panic button on Carolina yet. I
kind of want to see how these first four or
five weeks ago. If nothing's really changing, then I'm going
to have a lot of concerns, hit the panic button
and be like, Okay, things aren't going well and something
needs to change. I don't know what that will be,
so we'll see what happens over the next few weeks.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
I do have a question, so, how did how did
Ted McMillan look in his NFL debut? He led the
team five catches for sixty eight yards, had a twenty
one yarder. How did that connection between between him and
young look?

Speaker 1 (08:38):
It looked fantastic. McMillan was as advertised and look, I'll
admit I was a little lower on McMillan coming out
of Arizona, but seeing him in person at the Panthers
Fan Fester Special training camp practice for fans to go
out and watch, seeing him up close in person. Also

(09:00):
just seeing him on the field in week one and
basically being uncoverable for some chunks. It was very impressive
to watch him play. I thought he was great in
his debut. He didn't exactly blow the world up, but
he showed why he was the number eight overall pick,

(09:22):
or at least showed flashes, and that's what impressed me
a lot. I thought he also showed improvements as a
route runner, something I was concerned about coming out of college.
And also he did a good job separating from defenders,
which I also thought was a concern out of college.
So the things he improved on were the things I

(09:44):
needed to see. Now, can he keep it going consistently
over the next several weeks, We'll see. I'm very intrigued
with the matchup between him and Will Johnson, rookie Will
Johnson for the Arizona Cardinals. I'm looking forward to that
matchup this weekend. But McMillan young, I think that's gonna
be a really good connection this year and hopefully if

(10:04):
the Panthers are lucky for the next five to ten years,
if it works out.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
Nice Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gaddin and has had some
really really nice things to say about lots of players
on the Jaguars. He mentioned in particular Christian rose Boom,
the addition from the Rams and Trayvon merrig safety. They
led the stat sheet in terms of tackle production. I

(10:32):
know tackles doesn't necessarily mean it was a good game.
How did they look? How did they look in preseason?
And how did they look as parts as major parts
of the defense in Week one in the.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
Preseason, I thought they were okay. And the time they
did play on the field, it was only for a
few drives really total, from the first three preseason games,
or at least the first two. They didn't really play
at all in the third one. Then last week it
was just a nightmare. They were undisciplined, they were out

(11:07):
of their landmarks. They couldn't they couldn't do anything really well. Overall,
I thought they were solid in their run fits in
some instances, but overall it was not a good situation
to show that Carolina has a major weakness at linebacker,
considering the history at that position for that franchise with

(11:29):
Luke Keigley, Thomas Davis, John Beeson, Dan Morgan, and now
Morgan's a general manager, you would expect the general manager
who has a great history of being a part of
this franchise, but also knowing a thing or two about
the linebacker position and the importance of that position for

(11:51):
that franchise, that they never really truly addressed the position
in the offseason. That was a curious decision. We'll see
if Wallace and Roseboom can rebound, but right now it's
not off to a great start. If this continues, I

(12:11):
think I think the Panthers need to make a move
at the position.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
Ime the next on the rec of Seriit Podcasts Are
Cardinals Talk of the weathers, move on and start looking
at this matchup, keys matchups and more. That's coming next
on Receps, he read We're back on the rise of
Secret Podcasts Are Cardinals Talk on the webs That episode
through six hundred ninety six. We're talking to Jared Feinberg
talking about the Carolina Piot Panthers, whom the Cardinals play
at State Farm Stadium this Sunday one oh five pm

(12:36):
Local time, four oh five Eastern.

Speaker 4 (12:39):
So what do the panel?

Speaker 3 (12:43):
I will say this the Panthers, they have a very
unfavorable schedule. They have to play as the on the
road against in two consecutive home openers. They you know,
Jacksonville opened up in home, that was our home opener.
Week two become to Arizona, that's the cardinals first game.
So that adds a little extra all the time. If

(13:04):
you're but if you're looking at this game, if you're
looking at this matchup, and if there are two or
three things that you think have to happen for the
Panthers to be able to complete with slash upset the
Cardinals in week two, how would that happen?

Speaker 4 (13:22):
What are kind of the keys for them for being successful.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
I think it starts in the trenches and that was
the key last or last week. And last week I
saw the offensive line for Carolina do a steady job
against Jaguars defensive front, but they did have some issues.
They didn't have Keay mcguanu due to pendicitis. He's questionable

(13:48):
assuming for this coming week, but I do think he
makes his debut this week. But Panthers offensive line again
was steady, but they did have some moments. Their center
Austin Corbett has some issues with snaps. It was not
a great day for the center position for Carolina. So

(14:10):
that needs to be cleaned up. But defensively, that's where
I'm kind of keeping my eye on because they did
lose Tershaun Wharton for a couple of weeks due to
a hamstring injury. He is like a two to four
week time frame for his potential return. So you got
to see guys like Derek Brown, who's slowly starting to

(14:31):
get going again after coming back from a tor meniscus.
You have Bobby Brown, a true nose tackle who can
really get after it and create penetration up front, and
the Cardinals have plenty of history with Bobby Brown, so
now'll be another intriguing matchup up front. And then Ashawn Robinson,
a veteran from last year who was probably their top

(14:53):
run defender considering everyone that was not so great last
year for Carolin, so I'm really curious about the interior front.
In terms of pass rush, Carolina was one one of
the worst pass rushing teams last week because they had
zero sacks. He only had a few pressures. Overall, it

(15:15):
was not a great day for Carol. For Carolina. In
the ed rushing department, Pat Jones and DJ Wantam kind
of underwhelmed in that area. You didn't see the rookies, Uh,
Nick Gorton and Princely go and try and say this
right you mom me Yellen? I think I said it right,
and I believe it is gotcha Okay, it's it's always

(15:36):
a struggle with me on that one. That that's always been,
that's always been the last named.

Speaker 3 (15:41):
I would have loved the Cardinals to have drafted him
and then I'd have to be dealing with it every week.
Princely wa Smick Scarton. Didn't he have a little bit
of a health thing?

Speaker 4 (15:56):
Was that him?

Speaker 1 (15:58):
He did?

Speaker 4 (15:58):
How did that play out with? Did it clear up.

Speaker 1 (16:01):
Or it did?

Speaker 4 (16:02):
So?

Speaker 1 (16:02):
He was active this past weekend and he actually had
a collapse lung after joint practice with the Texans a
few weeks ago, and he's fully recovered from that. But
you would love to see the Panthers get their young
edge rushers involved a little bit more. I think Dave
Canal is kind of hinted Monday afternoon that he wants

(16:24):
to see some of his younger players defensively to get involved,
kind of push his assistance to kind of get them
going early on as well. So you may see those rookies,
but also a matchup I'm curious about is if they
moved Nick Gorton inside a little bit for some key matchups,
maybe some mismatches with a pass rusher lined up into

(16:46):
three tech, maybe to go in NASCAR package. So the trend,
just for me for Carolina are gonna be key. But
I also hope that you know, the linebacker room can
stay steady in the run fits, especially against James Connor
in that rung game, and also staying home against Kyler
Murray his rushing ability, his scrambling ability. I think Carolina

(17:09):
will need to use the spy even though I feel
like they probably won't knowing this system, it just I
don't know if they have the feasible talent to do so.
But overall, again it's the trenches that always comes down.
For the trenches for me, especially in these key matchups.
It was a key for me last week and Jacksonville

(17:31):
basically won on both sides of the ball in their
Week one matchup. But Arizona Carolina in the trenches on
both sides of the ball. That's going to be the
biggest key for Carolina if they are to win this game.

Speaker 3 (17:45):
I think I think what will be really fun to
watch on both for both ends is the matchup of j. C.
Horn against Marvin Harrison and then Will Johnson potentially against
Ted McMillan. Because of the youth that we have. Horn
one of the better cornerbacks in the league. He's he's

(18:07):
really good. Marvin Harrison junior coming up this year, had
a pretty solid game in Week one and then and
then on the other side, because you've got Ted McMillan,
you've got there both. He's a rookie, you got well.
Johnson was a rookie. Johnson who had a fantastic start
to his career last week, picked off a pastic got negated,
had broke up three other passes, looked looked like he

(18:28):
looked like the player that should have been drafted in
the middle of the first round. How do you how
will the Panthers handle Trey McBride. Will they put a
corner on him?

Speaker 4 (18:40):
Will they.

Speaker 3 (18:42):
Use linebackers or safety moores or how will they go
about that? Because we saw a little bit last week
in the season opener that that the Saints actually put
a cornerback on him, which like with a guy like McBride, Okay,
he can keep up with me, but I'm six foot five, so.

Speaker 1 (18:57):
Yeah, I think in situations. Last week when Carolina went
to man coverage, they put their nickel child Smith Wade
on the tight end Britain Strange, and they I thought
they had some decent success against that. But the Panthers overall,
they are a zone heavy team. They're gonna put their
linebackers and their safeties and coverage shells that that's kind

(19:21):
of the situation they're going to be in. And then
I'll say this, I think I I think this is
the week they're going to really try to play more
three safety looks with Trayvon moorg Or Mork Nick Scott,
and then Lathan Ransom, their fourth round pick out of

(19:41):
Ohio State, who can come downhill and knock the crap
out of defense or offensive playmakers. Ransom is someone I'm
excited about in this secondary, especially this season, once he
gets more playing time. I think he is this type
of energy and the physicality that this secondary is missing.

(20:05):
I just wasn't overly impressed with Nick Scott this past weekend.
So I think Ransom, if he gets more playing time,
you're gonna see maybe more come up in the slot
as a big nickel or even play a little bit
man or maybe some match coverage against Trey McBride. That's
gonna be an intriguing matchup, and I assume McBride's gonna

(20:27):
see perimeter reps, so you'll see him matched up with
jac Horn from time to time. I'm excited about that matchup.
But McBride's gonna be really one of the most difficult
matchups for Carolina. It was a difficult matchup last time around.
It will be another difficult matchup this time around. But
I think they have the personnel to potentially at least

(20:51):
limit McBride's big plays, and if so, that gives Carolina
a bigger chance to get a victory on the road
in Arizona.

Speaker 3 (21:02):
Next on the Rest of Here podcast, Best Our Cardinals
Talk on the Web, Let's move on. Let's look at
some picks and predictions. What do we think is gonna
happen this weekend? That's coming next one he read. We're
back on the Rose of Here podcast, the Best Our
Cardinals Talking the Web, talking to Jared Finberg talking about
the Panthers. Cardinals Panthers Week two. As we now hit
the prediction part of this, the Cardinals are heavy favorites

(21:23):
at home at six and a half points they are
in their home opener the JAD. The Panthers looked bad.
The Cardinals, though, didn't look great in Week one. My
opinion on that is New Orleans now that I they
weren't sharp, but the Saints all offered. I think the
Saints are gonna be a better bad team than people think.

(21:46):
I think they're gonna be a like the Cardinals weren't
twenty twenty three.

Speaker 4 (21:49):
They're not. They're gonna be dreadful.

Speaker 3 (21:50):
They're bad, they're not gonna win many games, but they're
gonna be a competitive bad And I think that that
starts with their defense, with with Brandon Staley leading the
way and the Panther and the Saints they engaged in
an ugly game plan. They engaged in ugly football. They
sold out against the run. Defensively, uh, they were schemed

(22:14):
really well, and then offensively it was just don't mess
things up, basically a popoery of of things that they
were left for. Oh and they just got the ball
out early. They just got the ball out early. They
weren't gonna get they weren't gonna, like Spencer Rattler, hold
the ball too long, and so they said two seconds,

(22:36):
ball out so if it was dink and dunk and
dank and duck and dank and dunk like that.

Speaker 4 (22:40):
Uh, And so the.

Speaker 3 (22:43):
I think, especially especially seeing the Panthers play in Week
one and perhaps hopefully they're not as that bad, I
think the Panthers will offer less of a challenge schematically
than the Saints did, especially since there is a week
of film on them.

Speaker 1 (23:04):
And one of the things I'm looking at for Dave Canalis,
and it was an issue last week, was can he
disguise some of the tells he's been kind of showing
in recent weeks or at least last week, and it
felt like the Jaguars had every answer for the Panthers.
Will this Arizona Cardinals defense have the answers for this

(23:27):
Panthers offense? I think you're I think this week you're
going to see a little bit more aggressive Carolina offense
because they're pretty ticked off about what happened last week.
They everyone in that building knew that was an unacceptable
result that should have never happen in the first place.
I think they're going to try to do their best

(23:49):
to correct that. Now it could cause an overcorrection where
it made for some mistakes I'm expecting some miscues, especially
you know, in the middle of the field on defense.
On offense, maybe there's more snap issues with Austin Corbett,

(24:10):
maybe more drops, maybe more inconsistencies from the playmakers outside
of McMillan. But the thing I'm really looking at is
cam Bryce Young continue to put his team in a
better position to win because he knows those those turnovers
aren't acceptable. He needs to get that right. If he

(24:32):
can keep the ball clean overall, good bass security, I
think he gives Carolina a chance. But this is going
to be an interesting matchup for both sides. I think
both teams have a have a chip on their shoulder
one way or another, and they're going to have to
prove that Hey, if Arizona starts to and oh, this

(24:56):
is a team that could start gaining momentum for other
or others outside of Arizona, like, oh, maybe Arizona might
be something here, especially if they have a commanding win
over Carolina. Now, if Carolina wins, now the narrative is
for Carolina, Oh, they just really had They were just
trying to get their feet going. Week one looked good.

(25:18):
In Week two heading to their first home opener against
the Atlanta Falcons. Could they keep that momentum going. We'll see,
But I think this Panthers offense misses Jalen Cocher a bunch.
He's out for the next few more weeks because of
a quad injury that he suffered in practice about a

(25:38):
week before the regular seasons started, So that's why they
signed Hunter Renfro back to the team. I don't know
if Renfro is going to be that reliable slot receiver
he used to be, so we'll see how he performs
in the slot this coming weekend. But this team needs
Jalen Cocher. They need him bad and things don't improve,

(26:01):
Jalen Coker is going to be a much welcomed return
come a Week five is it's not New England. I'm
very bad with trying to think of schedules ahead of time.
I should know this as a Panthers guy, But apparently
Miami Dallas, Dallas Dallas.

Speaker 5 (26:22):
Now Week four is Miami Week five is Dallas, gotcha?
So those games aren't going to be very It was
Patriots Week for Miami Week five, and I don't know
how to read.

Speaker 1 (26:34):
I think Miami could be a very favorable matchup for
Carolina that week.

Speaker 3 (26:38):
But especially if if Miami looks the way they look
last week.

Speaker 1 (26:43):
Yeah, i could get very ugly from Miami. But I'm
expecting a good game between Arizona and Carolina. I think
both teams have something to prove, especially Carolina. Think Caroline's
going to have the bigger chip on their shoulder after
what happened last week.

Speaker 3 (27:02):
You had to pick. Do you have a do you
have a prediction for us? You have a prediction for
a final score?

Speaker 1 (27:08):
I think Arizona's going to get the win. Well, it
will be a closer game than anticipated. I'm going to
go twenty one to seventeen Arizona.

Speaker 4 (27:17):
Oooh and kind of an ugly game a little bit,
I think.

Speaker 3 (27:21):
I think so the Cardinals last year when they won
a lot of time, they won big. I think this
is going to be a double digit win for the Cardinals.
I'm saying twenty eight to seventeen that it kind of
slows up. But we'll have to wait to see. Because
the Cardinals play an ugly game last last week. We'll

(27:41):
see how that goes. Now, let me throw some props
at you, not necessarily that you because because we've got
listeners that do like the props and things like that.
So we've got touchdown passes Bryce Young over or under
one and a half.

Speaker 4 (27:57):
Touchdown passes.

Speaker 3 (28:02):
On and I have you said yes over over you
can cash in big. Then that's a plus one eighty five.
What about interceptions over or under half? An interception?

Speaker 4 (28:15):
Where will he throw one or not?

Speaker 1 (28:16):
Basically, let's say no under Jay all.

Speaker 4 (28:24):
Right, it's pretty even.

Speaker 3 (28:25):
The the VIC gives gives the over slightly group slightly
longer ons at minus won twenty then over, then with
the under which is minus one ten. Umm, let me
see Chuba Hoverard over or under sixty five and a
half rushing yards.

Speaker 1 (28:44):
I'm gonna say even. I'm gonna say even. I think
Caroline's run game will feature a little bit more Rico Dowbtle.
I think they're I think they want to get him involved.
I think Bryce Young will use his legs a little
bit like he did last week. So I think even's
a pretty good that's a pretty good odds for Tube

(29:06):
Hubbard overall.

Speaker 3 (29:08):
Okay, how about Rico Daudel at seventeen and a half
over or under seventeen and a half rushing yards?

Speaker 4 (29:16):
Hm, he only had twelve in week one.

Speaker 1 (29:22):
Let me stick with just being under seventeen.

Speaker 3 (29:26):
Okay, what about Bryce Young fifteen and a half rushing yards?
He did run wild on the Cardinals last year. I
think I think Bryce Young, I think over fifteen and
a half. That's an easy bet for me.

Speaker 1 (29:39):
Yeah, it's over for me with that. I think Bryce
is gonna definitely use his legs at some points because
he's so hard to contain in the pocket, Like when
he's at his best, you have to account for him
outside the pocket, and also on the ground, like he
can get some chunk yards as Arizona Cardinals fans saw

(30:02):
last year with that long that long run early in
the game that was able to put I think it
was a touchdown leading drive for Carolina on that one.
But I do expect Bryce Young to definitely have over
fifteen yards on the ground.

Speaker 3 (30:21):
And defensively, how many turnovers do you think that the
Panthers will takeaways rather that the Panthers will have defensively.

Speaker 1 (30:32):
None. I think Kyler can protect the football in this game,
especially against the Panthers. Brian, I'm not overly trustworthy. I
think Caroline's going to give Kyler plenty a time in
the pocket. I think I expect Kyler to Kyler Murrays,
protect the football, keep it at bay. There may be

(30:53):
some turnover worthy players, of course, but I think overall
Carolina isn't able to get a take away this coming weekend.

Speaker 4 (31:03):
All right, and we will wrap this up.

Speaker 3 (31:06):
That is Jared Finberg talking to us about the Carolina Panthers,

(31:28):
