Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome, walk and welcome. It's Monday, October thirteenth, twenty twenty five.
This is the sust show at James I Junior. I
am James A juniorsty organizer. Shout out to NAPO is
entering its fortieth year as an association. Forty years. Wow,
it's crazy. Well, talk about more about that at some
point on the show. Also, just celebrate ten years doing
(00:29):
JHM Spotlight with my friend Frank Moran or some sorry ghow.
We had a big celebration a couple weeks ago because
we were off. I hatess to just say my am
I things to grat you go to Frank Moran after
bus TV. This is one of my longest running shows
on most successful shows along with this one. We're in
(00:53):
our tenth season and I'm heading into eleven and I'm
also heading into seventeen years of businesses. So this fall
and which will be celebrating all that stuff coming up
acknowledging that. But I'm thankful that I can still come
on talk about something fresh. I mean, doing these these
shows aren't easy. It's like, what do you talk about
(01:15):
if you don't have guests all the time? Even you
have guests, Like what do you talk about that's relevant
and fresh. But luckily our business is changing, life is changing,
the view of things are changing, the generations are dictating that.
So it's it's it's a whole it's a whole new thing.
So I'm sorry. Somebody just said me something real quick,
(01:43):
what is this new story? I'm right, that's what I mean.
Somebody text And I'm just very grateful to be able
to spe on here. I never pictured ten years later
doing anything that I was doing ten years ago that
was still on here because you guys make the show
a huge hit for me, and just show me love
(02:06):
that I come back. What I do, I can take
time off, I come back. You know, we're not on
every single week. I try to be. I am caregiving
my mom, I'm doing some other things. So just kind
of I'm trying to keep I love the show and
I will never stop doing the show as long as
I can. So thanks for joining us again today on
here and have more guests coming. We are about to
(02:27):
enter one of the busiest seasons of the year from
now to the end of the year as a group
of holidays that you're all glory part of. And so
I'm gonna ask some episodes coming up throughout this season
on how to get through some of these holidays I
gotta do every year. Some tips and tricks and things
(02:48):
that I've learned I'm gonna share with you. Because we
got we got Halloween, we got school stuff like fall homecoming,
winter home, winter stuff for kids, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Christmas parties,
New Year's. You have a lot coming up purpose and
people's birthday is about a lot coming up, so a
(03:11):
lot to remember. Now. I also want to tell you that,
on a side note, I have another show called All
Access Event Planning that's kind of organizing adjacent. It is,
I because I tell people, talk about people, talk to
people in the business obviously, but also I do an
episode on something, an episode on something, and then I
(03:40):
talk about it. So for example, signage, contracts, side inspections, scheduling,
like I talk about all that stuff. It's kind of
organizing adjacent. It is because it's about organizing your conferences
and your events, and I give you some things to
think about. So from my experience of years ago, read this,
(04:01):
so check that that's mostly audio only, So check that
out on any of your audio stream platforms. All Access
Event Planning fellow podcasts. I learned something. I'm going to
a friend of mine as a book coming out. A
book just came out. I'm going to her book signing
on Saturday. I can't mention it, but stay tuned. I'm
(04:23):
going to do some video, so I do a mini
interview while I'm there and bring it to this show
so you'll see it coming up soon. So that's coming up.
I just did a book signing video my friend, the
Stephen Rain's who just put something out and that is
out now. It's on the interteen the Pages with James Jr.
(04:45):
But it's out now. Video. You see. I'm looking at
friend's releasing books. I love it, you know. I I've
taken a break from reacing books a little bit. I
don't know what we're gonna do next. I have some ideas,
but AI, every thing is changing everything. It's let's let's
be real, it's it's changing a lot, and I'm like
trying to figure out how do I fit in that
in that space doing this podcast These shows are fine,
(05:11):
but putting out books, I'm actually having more success putting
out checklists. So I'm like, I don't I've decided I'm
to be honest with you. I decided where're gonna go
with this. I mean, I haven't had two books in
my brain for a while organizing related don't putting them out,
and I don't know. I don't know, So we will,
(05:32):
we will see. Just stay tuned with me and we'll
find out. Of course, we're also sharing platforms and James
at at she organized her as working on the show
where we were and that well, I was gonna talk
to you as about just kind of a little bit
today because it is that time of year, and uh,
(05:56):
you're starting to pull out all of the Christmas stuff
the fall time. I have my friends going to say
story gains get their fall stuff, and people are decorating,
and I'm seeing it more and more, people decorating outside
and you know, and and in their yards have all
this elaborate stuff. You know, I love it. I wish
(06:17):
I don't have space. I wish I could decorate every holiday.
That's something that I always wish I could do. I
just don't have the space for all the stuff. For
the few holidays I do have, I've paired down a lot.
It only keeps certain certain things. I think it's certain things.
(06:38):
And you're out there it's also a space issue. What
else you do it too? But but like you go out,
I mean, retailer is out there, Dollar Tree, targets, home depot, lows,
hobby lobby, they're all just they're already ready for the holidays.
(07:00):
They have Christmas stuff already. I was like, oh my god,
it's all this cute stuff. And now for me have
a lot diversal They have like brown santas and and
and uh, you know, and things for certain parts of
the segments of the population, and stuff for inside the house,
stuff for outside the house. Some stuff that's super cute
(07:23):
and niche, and some stuff that's very common and you
could possibly use it. I mean, it's just it's so
much stuff. How do you And the thing is, how
do you fight that? Because in today's world we want
that feeling. I don't we would fall to resent such
great feelings for many of us, the smell of the
(07:45):
turny of the leaves, the smell of pumpkin spice or whatever.
Thanksgiving brings up. You know a lot of memories that
are for some people that are you know, like getting
together and it's in the fall time, watching football. Christmas
of course went in Wonderland. And then snowy and this
is cold. You bring sweaters again. And this is a
(08:06):
time where a lot of my clients are switching over.
There's the wardrobes. It's like not trying to bring out
the shoes, the boots, the long jackets. We're getting there.
We lived in a bunch of country and again bringing
out all the you know, just the switch outs. I
hope you guys have a nice switch out. I'll be
(08:27):
going more in detail later. Stuff. Well, you know, you
guys have a nice switch out of of a system going,
because it's because if you have a system of how
I'll tell you. For example, I have one client where
in her garage we had every holiday that she would
decorate all in order color coded bins. So it was
(08:48):
like pink for Eastern, red, round Time's Day, orange for fall,
black for Halloween. You know, we had everything green for Christmas.
You know, we had all set up so literally and
all labeled, and all we had to do is just go, okay,
if Christmas, pull the coodle stuff out, well it's done,
(09:08):
put it back in. And we had a great system going.
She has since moved. I don't know where she is now.
She has moved, but we had a great light system,
and I think and she had ruined her garage for
And now that's the thing. We're always constantly and things break,
things get old, things drop, so you lose a few
things every year. But also it's kind of like we
have to watch what you buy because new stuff comes
(09:30):
out all the time, and cute new stuff comes out
all the time. You guys, I get it. You have
to be careful. You don't want the bench to overflow.
Her thing and my thing was always like Lanza bank
can still close and be flat on top and nothing
breaks inside or bends or whatever, then you're good. That
(09:54):
might be the one tip I may give you, guys
to leave with you today. It is that you know,
if your bin could close and it's not a braco
bust open, it's fine, and it's flat. There are things
extrectly placed and it's fine in there. That you're good.
I call business Appla there and people are decorating earlier.
(10:17):
We're just like, screw it, it's Christmas now. They're doing
it now, and I'll fall down. And I get it,
you want that feeling. But I just and my friend
I'm going to this Saturday for her book, Her Things
about Space, and mental space and physical space, and I
had I hadn't cleaned in a while, and so because
I had been so busy with my mom and other
(10:39):
things in my life, and I just got tired of it.
So one day I stayed home. It said, okay, James,
your home. You just straighten up your room, wipe down
your counters deeply. I did that, and I felt so
much better mentally, and I'm like, I'm looking back here,
it looked great. I gained room. Back in my room, boom,
(11:00):
there's just stuff laying on the floor. Because because luckily
for me, I set up, I set up a system
where which is why organizing important. Another pro tip for you.
It went in a while to set up a system,
but once it's set up, is set up. So even
(11:22):
if you don't do it for a while, if the
setup is still the same, you can go right back
into it. So every place, meaning every place, everything I
have as a place. And sometimes there's just a matter
of me taking the hat and putting with the hats.
(11:44):
But it's a matter of me of taking my purse
and putting with you, you know what I mean, Like
it's just it was just a matter of that, that's
all it's a matter of putting things where they're supposed
to be. So I have a spot for them. That's good.
The spots there, So it was so that wasn't the problem.
So I just I thought, that's that's what's so wonderful
(12:06):
about that that I was able to put things back
when they belong my drawers. I have drawers for this,
drawers for that. Everything went back in that drawers was
to go into. So it makes cleaning easier by it.
I mean, that's just a big right there. So this
holly season, we gotta make sure even if you don't
use everything out of that bin, make sure everything stays
(12:27):
that bin. If you have stuff up, now you have
a place for it. Put that stuff into a bin
and put make sure it's a spot for everything. And
you have a system set up. How you're an organizer,
if you have to get a system going, because literally, seriously,
it'll be it'll just make it easier for you. This
is where all the towels goes, This is where all
this goes. It's a whole thing. And I just think
(12:48):
this holly season, as you're switching out stuff, Okay, all
the bikinis, okay, they all got to go away now,
you know, but you want to keep a few bikinis
so you have a spot where you can easily act
system but also how to access items is very important
because you may go on a trip to Florida in January.
It's a good time to go and you need swimwear.
(13:12):
You don't want to put it so far away and
so high up as a wide that you can't ever
get it. It's a chore to get it. You still
want accessible, so you gotta find out when you setting
up systems, you gotta make sure you set them up
where it's viable and also easy for you to access.
I just did a story on for Martha Stewart on
(13:32):
a write up it's coming out sooo on junk drawers
I call miscellaneous drawers, I was like, you just keep
things in there that you might just you might need
that are that are multipurpose things, you know, maybe some
twist ties, maybe some tape whatever. And I said, for me,
a flashlight. You should always have a mirror, mabe, some
(13:53):
hand sanitizer, I said, some pocket change, cause you just
never know, you might be at the last minute you
got right there, or I need I need a couple
of quarters for the machine out there. I got I
got it right. It's like this stuff that you just
never know. I don't know just thing. It can be
used for multiple things. But I have a space. You
(14:14):
have a space for it. I always say the mistake
in store should be somewhere accessible, or if it's a
miscedious bin, a miscellaneous bag, just make sure it's somewhere
that you can get to it easily. We always say
organize a the laziest people. That's kind of the funny joke,
the ironic joke. We want to make things so easy
for you to grab and be at your fingertips. You're
(14:37):
saving steps, you're saving time, you're saving energy, you're saving stress.
I'm trying to find stuff. That's that's the main thing,
right And during the holiday season, you're all your holiday
plates are Mine are actually in a certain section in
my cabinet space. So I have in a certain cabinet section.
I'm glad I can see them. I said, if I
(14:59):
had to go dig formar find them, and I'm like, oh,
it's too much. You don't you don't want to give
yourself more work. That's the thing. You don't want to
work for yourself. What easy access. That's all we had
to say. I was like, We're gonna getway for the holidays.
I'm gonna have specific episodes on specific things so as
(15:19):
we go through the holiday season that hopefully will help
you that I've found for me. They are just things
that help for me, and it'll be very specific. But
I just want to say hello, happy fall. We are
in it. It's October. The weather is very nice here
in La. It's been the seventies. Been great. I'm getting
over a cold. You can't hear it. I'm doing better,
(15:40):
and we're gonna We're gonna make it. After all. We
are after all, I'm James, an organizer a lot of
help dot com. Check out my blog and put out
every day it's more money through Friday. I'm really having
some fun writing it. I'm about all kinds of topics.
This show of course to Friday, audio and video wherever
we're on social media. Mondays are new episodes. I will
(16:04):
talk to you next time.
