an exceptionally bright and promising young woman. At the age of just twenty four.
(01:29):
She was working towards a doctorate instudies in pharmacology at Yale University and
was getting ready to get married andsettled down. Everyone who knew Annie described
her as a bright and smart youngwoman, and when she disappeared just five
days before she was due to getmarried, her husband to be knew that
this wasn't just a case of coldfeet. Before Annie could ever graduate and
(01:53):
walk across the stage at Yale, her life was taken away from her.
This is Annie story. Annie wasborn into an American Vietnamese family in San
Jose, California, and from ayoung age it was clear to her parents
that she was going to go far. When she attended high school, her
(02:14):
peers voted her as most likely tobe the next Einstein, and to be
honest, they went far off.Annie excelled through all of her studies and
gained a scholarship to study cell developmentbiology at the University of Rochester. The
move was no doubt difficult for Annie, but she took everything in her stride
and quickly settled into a new lifeas an undergraduate student. Whilst at the
(02:39):
University of Rochester, Annie met JonathanWoudowski and the two quickly hit it off.
Before long, they became boyfriend andgirlfriend, and the two would set
their sights on spending the rest oftheir lives together. With a bright and
promising career ahead of her and herhusband to be. Annie had it all
(03:01):
so when she was accepted to Yalefor her PhD, it was just the
cherry on top for her. Everythingwas falling into place for Annie. But
then one September day would see thattaken away from her. When Annie failed
to return home on September eighth, two thousand and nine, her roommates knew
(03:24):
that something was amiss. Annie wasvery responsible, and with it being this
close to her wedding, they knewthat she wouldn't have just left unannounced.
When the hours ticked by and nightfell, her friends picked up the phone
and reported her missing to the NewHaven Police Department. The police quickly arrived
(03:46):
at the house that Annie shared withthe college roommates and began retracing her steps.
After talking to Yale University, theyfound CCTV footage of Annie from that
morning walking to the research lab onamstats. She had arrived at the Sterling
Hall of Medicine campus earlier that morningat around ten am, and she was
(04:06):
captured on CCTV walking to the lab. But there's just one problem with this.
Annie never walked out of that researchlab. Investigators scoured CCTV cameras hoping
to catch a glimpse of Annie, but there was nothing. She had entered
(04:28):
that lab and simply disappeared inside thelabs at Annie's pocketbook and phone, but
there was no Annie. The buildingsat Yale required an ID card to gain
entrance, and none of the seventyCCTV cameras across the campus had captured her,
leaving her family and fiance were heartbrokenand watchers investigators just whirled around them
(04:56):
for days. The New Haven PoliceDepartment searched for Annie but found nothing,
and that is when they decided tocall in the help of the Connecticut State
Police and the FBI. On Septemberthirteenth, two thousand and nine, the
day that Annie was supposed to marrythe love of her life, Jonathan,
(05:16):
her body was discovered stopped upside downin a wall. The day before,
investigates a discovered an iron of clothingcovered in blood, which ultimately led them
to discover Annie's body. What shouldhave been a day of two families coming
together to celebrate the union of twopeople in love had now turned into a
(05:40):
day of two families coming together insorrow. The coroner returned a verdict of
traumatic asphyxiation by net compression, andnow the hunt was sound to find the
person responsible. The New Haven PoliceDepartment, the Connecticut State Police, and
the FBI all pulled their resources togetherand began the hunt for justice. Seamen
(06:06):
was recovering from Annie's body and itwas sent for further testing. The investigation
wasn't without suspects from the outset, and for the FBI, there was one
man in particular they wanted to speakto, twenty six year old Raymond Clark
the Third. Raymond worked as alab technician for Yale, and according to
(06:29):
the students in his labs, hewas known to be mean and he would
show at them for leaving the labin a mess. He also told investigators
that he saw Annie leaving the YaleAnimal Research Center that day carrying a notebook
and two bags of mouse food, which she would be using for her pharmacological
studies. Raymond had also been theonly other person in the lab that day
(06:54):
with Annie, and at that time, the FBI quickly zeroed in on him.
After conducting interviews with him, investigatorsnotice that he was covered in scratches
that he couldn't explain further evidence, thinking Raymond to the crime scene was found,
but the most stamning evidence wouldn't bediscovered until September fifteenth, two thousand
(07:15):
and nine, when his apartment wassearched and a DNA sample was retrieved.
The forensic sample found at the crimescene on Annie matched to the DNA sample
obtained from Raymond Clark. The third, his fate was sealed and he was
promptly arrested and carted after prison.Disturbingly, Raymond tried to profess his innocent
(07:41):
at first, not pleading guilty, but after seeing the case Anne the evidence
against him, he quickly pled guiltyto Annie's murder whilst Annie's family and fiance
were in the court, which sparedthem the horrors of a trial as there
was no trial. Since Raymond pledguilty, he made a statement to the
(08:05):
court which said, I take fullresponsibility for my actions. I alone am
responsible for the death of Annie Leeand causing tremendous pain to those who loved
and cared about Annie. I amtruly sorry I took Annie away from her
friends, her family, and mostof all, her fiance. I have
always tried to do the right thingin stay out of trouble, but I
(08:26):
failed. I took a life andcontinued to lie while Annie's friend's family and
fiance sat and waited. I blameonly myself, and there are no excuses
for what I have done. Anniewas and will always be a wonderful person,
by far a better person than Iwill ever be. Rayman Clarke the
(08:48):
third was sentenced to serve forty fouryears in prison with a possible release state
in twenty fifty three. One Sorestates that on account of sexual ass Lt.
Raymond went with the Alfred play, which was where he neither denied nor
accepted guilt, but accepted that hewould likely be found guilty if he would
go to trial. He has nevergiven a full reason as to why he
(09:11):
killed Annie, and Annie's friends andfamily are now trying to rebuild their lives
and just cope with Annie's loss. That has been this week's episode. I
apologize it's shorter than usual. I'mjust trying to get back into the swing
of things. Things will resume asnormal and as always, I will see
