What Are You Looking For?
John 1:38-39
“Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day…”

There’s something beautiful about a simple question that goes deeper than it first appears. When Jesus turned and saw two men following Him, He didn’t ask for their names. He didn’t inquire about their backgrounds or even their motives. He asked a question that still echoes in every soul that reaches out to Him: “What seek ye?” What are you looking for?

Speaker 1 (00:18):
As we begin our devotion time today here on Morning
Moments with Jesus and or this is the Life podcast,
the Lord takes us to John chapter one this morning,
particularly in verses thirty eight and thirty nine, with the
question that I believe every one of us has to
answer at some point in our lives, and usually HiT's
actually on a daily basis. We have to get up

(00:40):
every morning and ask this same question when we go
and search for the things that we have for our day.
And John chapter one again in verse thirty eight and
thirty nine, Listen what the word of God says. Then
Jesus turned and saw them following, and saith unto them
what seek ye? They said unto him Rabbi, which is

(01:03):
to say, being interpreted, Master, where dwellest thou? He saith
unto them, Come and see? And they came and saw
where he dwelt, and abode with him that day. As
I read that, there's something beautiful about a simple question

(01:24):
that goes deeper than what it first appears. And so
when we look at this this morning, when Jesus turned
and saw two men following him, watch what didn't happen?
He didn't ask for their names. He didn't inquire about
their background, their lifestyle, or even their motives for following him.
He asked one question, and that one question still echoes

(01:49):
through every soul that reaches out to him even to
this day. What seek ye? In other words, what are
you looking for? Now? That question is not just about
gaining information. It all has to do with the heart,
because if you understand anything about Scripture, everything that Jesus

(02:13):
did was spiritual minded. It was a spiritual application to
everything he did. So when he asked, basically, what are
you looking for? It was all about what is your
desire for following me? What are you looking for by
following me? It's about a deep longing that each and

(02:33):
every one of us should have. So let me ask
you the question this morning, when you pray for a
closer walk with God, what are you really looking for?
Are you looking for peace in the middle of chaos?
Are you looking for hope when life seems to be
discouraging you. Maybe you're searching for meaning, for truth, for

(02:56):
something that feels real and eternal. Or are you just
looking for something that makes you feel comfortable? These are
questions we have to ask honestly before the Lord. Maybe
you just want to be near him, and you don't
even have the words to explain why. That's when you
know you're in the right place. See, that's what happened

(03:17):
with these two disciples in John chapter one. Here they
didn't really have an answer for his question, so they
responded with a question of their own, Rabbi, where dwellest thou?
In other words, what they were saying is where are
you staying? We just want to be where you are.

(03:38):
That's basically what they were saying. They didn't ask for
a miracle, they didn't de mand proof that he was
the Messiah. They just wanted to be close to him,
to find out more about him, to listen to him
and hear the words that he had been speaking. And
Jesus replied with three simple life changing words, come and see.

(04:05):
Wasn't a lecture, wasn't a warning. It was just one
open invitation. And that's the heart of Jesus that he
wants us to see this morning. He doesn't just answer
from a distance. He invites us into his presence. He
doesn't just offer advice. He offers the opportunity to abide

(04:25):
with him. He says, come and see where I dwell,
Come and see the peace that I give. Come and
see the joy that this world can't give you and
it can't take away from you. Come and see the
strength for your weakness, the mercy for your failures, and
the love that will never let you go. Helujah. And

(04:47):
here's the most important part of this story. They came
and saw where he dwelt, And the verses go on
to say they abode with him that day. They didn't
just stop buy they didn't just catch a glimpse, They
didn't just drop to a knee for a five minute prayer.
They abode with him. That means they are remained with

(05:11):
him that day. Why, because when you truly encounter Jesus,
you don't want to leave. The deeper truth in this
story is this, Jesus isn't inviting us into a religion
or a rule book or some ritual. He's inviting us
into a relationship, one where you can dwell with him,

(05:34):
walk with him, talk with him, and find rest and
answers in his presence. So again I asked this morning,
what are you looking for when you ask God for
more of him? Are you looking for more blessings, more answers,
maybe even more of your own way? Or are you

(05:56):
simply hungry for more of him? Because a closer walk
you're praying for is not found in doing more, but
in coming and seeing and choosing to stay. It will
never be found in busyness. It'll only be found in stillness.

(06:19):
So take a moment this morning and answer this question
in your own heart. What are you looking for? Then
listen to the invitation Jesus gives. Come and see, and
when you do, don't be in a rush to leave.

(06:39):
Stay awhile, abide with Jesus, because once you've seen where
he dwells, your heart will find what it's been searching
for all along. James wrote it very well in chapter
four and verse number eight of his letter when he says,
draw nigh unto God, and he will and draw nigh

(07:01):
unto you. That means near. So let your walk with
God begin not with striving to do more or be more,
but was simply seeking more of Jesus. Today, you be safe,
you be strong, and you be blessed, and you be
aware today that Jesus is near and all he wants

(07:25):
is more of you. Do you really want more of him? Lord? Will?
We'll see you back here again tomorrow? And until then
have a great day.
