Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to this week's EFL. We're going to be picking
through the League one and League two action from the weekend.
If you're looking for reaction to the Championship, then just
take a look in your feeds. We're doing two separate
episodes this week, just so much to dig into on
the championship. A little plug for our Thursday episode, this

(00:25):
week's OCCA where we build an accumulator for the weekend's
action for Saturday three pm games. So this week we'll
have the Premier League to take a look at as well.
We started the season pretty well Week two attend to
one winning travel for games that were just exclusively League one.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
And League twos.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
We're digging very slightly into that in a minute. This
won't be an episode about betting, very brief mention of that.
But if you do bet, please make sure that you
gamble responsibly, never bet more than you can afford. And
it is of course for eighteens and over. So Jimmy
Love talking about the championship was a brilliant opening weekend.

(01:06):
Second weekend for League One. I mean there's only one
place to start for us because we were both at
the Barnsley Burton game me as a supporter. You're working
for hospital Radio, doing your community service and winning more.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Into the final one hundred.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Yeah, pitch the crime, So yeah you kick us off.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Mate.

Speaker 4 (01:28):
Well, I feel like I sort of adopted Barnsley as
a team.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
I've got a little bit.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
Of a soft spot watching him for like the past
six seven years, like going to a lot of games
and having said that, I feel like I can look
at the game a bit more objectively than you perhaps,
And the first half, the first half was diabolically bad performance.
But I think you've got to give credit to Burton,

(01:54):
who perhaps are the real deal under h bow Year,
isn't it Yep?

Speaker 3 (02:00):
I always said that's game because he got appointed.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
At the same time as Route at Oxford, both first
named bo you're both playing yellow. I always think I'll.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Go as an expert manager as well.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Exactly.

Speaker 4 (02:10):
This is where the confusion comes in. But I was
really I was really really impressed with Burning in the
first half. I had been said that they got the
noses in front of the third minute due to I
would categorize it as a dubious penalty.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
I've seen it back and it's a pen for sure.
I think at the time, I think, being a long
way away from it, it was hard to tell. But
then you're lucky and David McGoldrick basically just fore arms
burned player in the face, So yeah, it's pretty hard
to dispute. I think it was down as being scored
in the fourth minute, but I think it was about
ninety seconds on the cloth really early on when it so, yeah,

(02:46):
hard to come back from that one did. The atmosphere
was really good and it just sungs to life out
yeah doesn't it?

Speaker 4 (02:51):
So yeah, but really nicely dispatched by Beasley. Keeper didn't
even dive and then what was it thirty fifth minute
fabo to their doubled.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Their league at lead.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
Sorry, and it was all the defensive issues perfectly summed
up in like a minute long phase of play because
Barnes actually their possession high up the picture.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
I think it was yoga Nathan.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
He got his legs in the tangle and Burton played
it square, played it up front to the striker or
and suddenly two Bondses makeshift center back to Earl and
Maile Digavigno. But started the match day one as fullbacks,
but Roberts injured, Shepherd suspended. They was like two yards
away from each other, like fifteen yards into the opposition.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Half side, didn't they in the half? Basically a massive error.

Speaker 4 (03:41):
And then Tavaria's with one pass was slipped in, but
he started to run from like ten yards inside his
own half. He's still thirty forty yards from goal if
you haven't seen it, but keep her.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
It's just a rush of blood to his head.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
He didn't move for the first goal, but he moved
way too much for the I do need you do.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
Need to watch this goal because it is unbelievable. You're
watching the defensive calamity happened on the halfway line and thinking,
oh god, no, you was so exposed here, what's happening
straight past from the defender and then just out of
the corner of your eye, you like, what is the
keeper doing it? You just see him sprinting fly out
and he never is anywhere near the boy, Like he's

(04:18):
pretty much on the half way line after he's slid in.
But he had the good sense to not get sent off. Yeah,
he like half pulled out and then slid miles past.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
You're like, oh dear.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
And he actually did it away at Plymouth last weekend,
but smashed into Caleb wats as he won the balls
who got away with it. So he's probably a keeper
that's going to get sent off this season. It would
be very, very hard to not see him get sent off.
But yeah, it was entertaining Barnsley to raw back with

(04:50):
three goals in the in the final half hours, actually
trying to work work it out afterwards, and I couldn't.
I don't remember ever I've been going to watch Barnes
if thirty years almost now ever seen them come from
two goals down to win at home, really don't think ever.
And I can remember them doing it away from home

(05:11):
at Hull about twenty years ago, but yeah, I really
really don't remember it. So the very encouraging thing from
a Barnes's perspective, but also just for like following them
and their potential for where they could finish this season.
There is no way the team last year would have

(05:33):
been able to do that from a resilience perspective, So
what Connor Hoahan has managed to instill in the summer
is enormous because in the opening game of the season
to have had a man sent off after fifty five
minutes and be two on up and then to go
on to win three one away at Plymouth, and then
the second game of the season to be two down

(05:55):
at halftime and to come back on win three to
two with a night a third minute winner. That is
a complete shift in mentality.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Yeah, one plays.

Speaker 5 (06:05):
If they don't fix the defense though, then they've got Yeah,
there's a there's a lot to unpack because all the
three goals you just goed all quality passing moves.

Speaker 4 (06:16):
The finish for the first one from Vickers was unbelievable.
It was sort of a half change, but the way
he just whipped his foot.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
Round it no saving that and it kicks out like
a brilliant second half.

Speaker 4 (06:28):
But I sort of caught in to minds because there's
a few things It's like Keel had done with the
equalizer and the start in the front six in general
are brilliant. But I suppose you could say for a
lot of teams about the best player or the best
couple of players. But slight concern the importance put on
what is it thirty seven year old David mcgoldrick's shoulders

(06:49):
played ninety three minutes, grabbed the winner substitute. But he's
keen to point out that his younger art, he still
feels younger heart, he still feels like he can do
thirty forty games in the season. But just how central
he will be to Bones' campaigns a little bit of
a worry. The nature of the Golds was all brilliant
and the resilience that they've shown in the first two
games has been really impressive, in the complete opposite of

(07:12):
what would come to expect from Barnesley.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
And we're definitely going to get accused of being Barnsy
centric and the bias and everything here.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
But well we're both at the game, no talk about
it and prepared for it.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
But David McGoldrick then he is about he's almost thirty
eight years old, about to ten thirty eight, and I'll
pull my hands up that. I mean, it was a
shock when he got announced to have signed for Barnsley
and like, what the hell is this? We're signing someone's
about to ten thirty eight and as good as he's

(07:44):
been in league who have been playing in League Two
for the last two seasons, and he was watching it
on TV last week it was really good against Plymouth,
but obviously you don't get to see it up close.
Other than I thought Charlie Webster for Burton was fantastic
in central midfield.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
Everything good came from him.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
They'll do well to keep hold.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
Of him to the end of the window.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
But other than him, McGoldrick was outstanding. So the the
ability for him to be playing at that ability level
the age that he is is incredible. Absolute credit to
himself and to think that he has signed for Barns

(08:29):
are they because he went to the same wedding in
the summer for a derby player or an ex Derby
player and he literally said to Connor Horahan or sign me,
like you haven't got any strikers, come on, will you
signing obviously thinking I'm not signing players of that age,
and then he just kept phoning him and texting him

(08:49):
and so he's like, all right, then I will sign him.

Speaker 3 (08:53):
Really, he is like mad.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
It shows that it's not all about like spreadsheets and
data and everything, which is pretty cool to hear that
you can sign one of your ex teammates having like
add a.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Drink with them at a wedding. No, it isn't like
your best player.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
So it was yeah, pretty cool to see bouncy Bolton
on Saturday. That's going to be a really interesting game
to see how the the league might turn out this season.
Two teams who are like fastly developing.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
Bolton one of.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
The teams that delivered this week's aacker for us to
a winner at home to Plymouth. As as especially you
and Tom foresaw it really.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
Yeah, it was.

Speaker 4 (09:36):
It was completely off the back of the their opening
game against Stockport, where there was they didn't deserve to lose,
basically too, that they had a chance to take the lead.

Speaker 3 (09:43):
And it just came down to chances.

Speaker 4 (09:45):
And based off that performance, we've both sort of recalibrate
our opinions because any any doubt we had based on that,
it looks like Bolton are just going to be just
gonna be a okay And looking forward to that game
between Barnsley and Bolton at Oakville on Saturday, it's going
to be really interesting one. But to take it back
to barnsy for a second, that was who hence twelve

(10:07):
game temporary and permanent charge. You still don't get to
clean sheet under him yet, have you, which is a
massive concern.

Speaker 3 (10:12):
It seems like the recruitment for the large part of ours.

Speaker 4 (10:16):
Being really good rays clear. He came off the bench,
he looked really impressive. You've got Patrick Kelly on loan
from he was was he on loan at Doncaster last season, has.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
Just signed permanently from west Ham. He looked very, very
impressive both games off the bench.

Speaker 4 (10:31):
Another another shrewd bit of business, but again it had
just come back Barnesley. Brilliant to win the game against
Plymouth with ten men, brilliant to come back from two
goals down at the weekend, but just the defensive shortcomings.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
I'd love to see one or two faces through the door.

Speaker 4 (10:47):
Not even necessarily it's center back because you got email
Diger Vigny didn't do really, they didn't really play well
at the weekend, but they are They were assigned a
center but actually got Roberts Shephard. I'd be looking maybe
at more traditional fullback suited to that system to address
them problems at Barnsley. But yeah, a lot to be
excited about Hopewell. But Burton I was really impressed. I

(11:08):
was really impressed with them. A couple of familiar faces
just when them lost the house.

Speaker 3 (11:13):
But as just.

Speaker 4 (11:13):
Said, everything good came through Webster for Burton. They do
really well to keep hold of him and I really
liked the from and j Beasley.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
Occupied both center backs allowed him to get up the pitch.

Speaker 4 (11:23):
I found it interesting in the second half straight from
the kickoff, do you remember what Burton did that It
was peculiar, pumped it straight down the line to touch
out or play about ten yards from Barnsley's touchline, and
I thought that set they're still out really well and
there was very unlucky to get to get broken down
in the manner they did, but Burton, I think aside.
A few people were mentioning it preseason.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
Last season. I know duff Man was hot on them.

Speaker 4 (11:48):
Someone else in the office Stare Cooper, James Cooper was
really keen on them. And it looks like it could
come to fruition this season based on the two games
I've seen them so far, having watched them for nine
minutes on Saturday, I'd beat I'd be quietly confident about,
but maybe maybe a top four finished of something.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
I thought there was an impressive unit, so perhaps want
to look out for. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:08):
Likewise, I would be surprised for them to be getting
dragged into the relegation, but there's got to be worse
teams than them in the division. Again, we're two weekends
in and there's always these caveats to it. Getting appennanty
after ninety seconds changes the nature of the game massively

(12:29):
and then being gifted the second goal, so that one
match sample size just has to be taken with a
pinch of salt. They were very pragmatic, very direct in
the way that they played. I did think the second
half tactic was odd, to be honest, because it was
half tart. I think it was kickoff to start the
second half and then after they continued the two goals,

(12:52):
just literally booting it straight out of play. That they
didn't manage to pen barn Zy in properly on any
of those occasions, and it's just what it says about
just giving up the ball immediately. So yeah, I had
mixed mixed thoughts on that, to be honest. And they
were definitely very interesting killing the game early on, whereas

(13:15):
I actually thought they were in the ascensive for the
long parts.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
If they'd been a.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
Bit more positive, to a bit more to it, then
they maybe could have put Barns into bed. So yeah,
or mixed mixed few of them, if I'm honest. Interesting
in League one is there's six teams that have started
with two wins, a few of them up there that
we would fully expect. So Huddersfield impressive two nil winner

(13:40):
at Reading Luton, straightforward to nil win at Peterborough and
Peterbriodge as self destruct button playing it out from the back,
lowing a couple of clean sheets. That's you just know,
that's what it's going to be based on for them.
Stopport another win, very very hard for Wickham to win
to one at another match that they've got the the

(14:01):
acho over the line for us. So those three along
with Barnsley, I know that there was very much mixed
views on Barnsley. I would say more expected to be
the top four. Stevenage and Doncaster six points from six
exceptionally good starts for them.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (14:20):
Grant McCann obviously a manager you rate extremely highly. You
think he can be, should be still managing at a
level above the one he is and he's the proofs
in the pudding from well, when would you say the
run started all the way back?

Speaker 3 (14:34):
Not last season, the season before when they were what
were they like.

Speaker 1 (14:38):
It's coming up almost two years, isn't it. It was basically
January February and they should have got promoted out of
the league.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
So yeah, it's going back a long way.

Speaker 4 (14:46):
Yeah, And they're just they're just I'm going to say
they're just riding that momentum, but they're not.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
They're just they're just a really good, really good squad and.

Speaker 4 (14:54):
They've got they've got quality in this side, particularly Luke Molinu.
He was in the Team of the season in league
to last season. He will be desperately keen to prove
himself at the level. He grabbed the assist for the
equalizer or was it the winner.

Speaker 2 (15:10):
He grabbed.

Speaker 4 (15:12):
The equalizer and the assist at the at the weekend
at Mansfield and Bailey got Bailey got the brace. But
I'm happy to see Doncaster doing well. I can't I
can't give you too much insight on the performances so
far this season because a chance to watch any of
the games for the duration.

Speaker 3 (15:29):
But it's it's exciting to see the champions.

Speaker 4 (15:33):
Come up and and and punch punch within in the
way and make a good start to the.

Speaker 2 (15:40):
Oing game of the season.

Speaker 1 (15:41):
Against XO it was it was more than you penn
was it last minute or eighty ninth minute And then
they've just got a winning in the ninety six minutes.
So at least they' showing they can they can go
really weally late in games. It's it's very fine margin,
isn't it?

Speaker 2 (15:53):
So positive?

Speaker 1 (15:55):
Very very positive start with them. We won't go game
by game in League one. She's got a couple of
other things to pick out. Leyton Orient bouncing back really
well from that thrashing at Huddersfield on opening day to
win two nil. Interesting to see as well. Josh Caroma,
one of the summer signings scoring. They've already started to
make a couple of loan signings and that was always
going to be the case, having to completely regenerate that squad,

(16:16):
so it might take them a bit of time that
they're gonna be They're gonna be fine and you can
never rule them out. Got a very good manager, but
there's always going to be that little lag. I think
that the one team that deserves real praise and one
team that's a real concern is Exeter thrashing Blackpool for one.

(16:37):
So that's seven goals conceded in their opening two games,
Blackpool and Exeter, like I just mentioned, a couple of
minutes away from getting a point at Doncaster and then
coming back favorites for or second favorites for relegation, depending
who you bet. With Blackpool, massive overhaul in the squad
in the summers, try to fix their defense.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
They have not.

Speaker 1 (16:59):
That is a serious concern. To start at home to
Stephen is in a way to exeter and to concede
seven goals.

Speaker 2 (17:07):
He's worrying, very very worrying.

Speaker 4 (17:10):
It is because it was another team that people we
were pretty well I wasn't, but pretty hot, and based
on how they finished last season, they went into the
summer really really hot, and a lot of people's outing
them for top six because it's really heady days. But
you look at the main issue what you just said, fixing,
fixing the defense and acquisitions horse Fall. Mainly for me,

(17:33):
it looked like it looked like Bruce had addressed them
in the way he was most comfortable, experienced pros who
he can trust. But then the nature of the goals,
particularly in their opening game, was really concerning. They concede
for exiting. Like you said, he's a real worry again
early days. But you can't ignore what's gone on so
far in the first one hundred and eighty minutes of football.

Speaker 3 (17:54):
For Blackpool real disappointing started the season.

Speaker 1 (17:56):
Well, you look at the you look at the team
that played on Saturday, there's no Fraser horse fall.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
They haven't got him injured injured.

Speaker 1 (18:06):
Then Michael Aheaquay is the other sort of I wouldn't
say big name, but you know experienced center half that's
come in the summer that you feel like it's going
to have a big impact. Jordan Brown did really well
last season at Leighton Orient, coming into midfield alongside George Huneyman,
who should be a really good player at this level.

(18:28):
So when they've got Lee Evans, Jordan Brown, George Huneyman
in sidi midfield and then I mean even only having
one of Michael aheath Way or or Fraser horse fall
A's center back, you feel like that should not be
a team that's contained in seven goals to steven and
or Exeter.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
So there is something.

Speaker 1 (18:49):
Yeah, not not right there that's going to take a
serious amount of fixing.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
And they're playing.

Speaker 1 (18:57):
At home to Huddersfield next week, so it already feels
like that is it's a high pressure game because Steve
Bruce has been well backed this summer. Yeah, and I
know they've lost Sonny Carry and Rob apt but I
mean scoring goals is not the problem. They're just letting

(19:19):
far too many in. So that'll be a match that
will tell us.

Speaker 3 (19:23):
A lot on on on the defensive issues.

Speaker 4 (19:26):
Obviously, Bailey Peacock foul easily able to say Northern Irish international.
He's in their net once. He conceded now seven goals
this season. I don't know if he dropped a bit
of a clanger match Day one. Off the top of
my head, I think he did.

Speaker 3 (19:41):
But this is it.

Speaker 4 (19:41):
This is a massively important loan for him because he
was one of the one of the few, one of
the few plays at Birmingham didn't come across great at
all last season.

Speaker 3 (19:51):
I just got his Wikipedia page up.

Speaker 4 (19:52):
He only started nine games again, he got He dropped
a handful of clangers in those nine games and got dropped.
And it feels like a massive moment in his career
is not He's not.

Speaker 3 (20:02):
The young, highly regarded keeper he was. He's always felt
like during my time following his career. He's old. He's
not old. He's twenty eight. He's twenty eight years old.

Speaker 4 (20:10):
He needs to establish himself somewhere now after a pretty
disastrous stint at Birmingham. Yeah, I don't know. I don't
know if he's the answer. He hasn't set the world alight,
it's so far.

Speaker 1 (20:23):
The one thing I would say about Blackpool for for
next week before we we move on to League two
is I just wonder whether, I mean, this is why
weirdly is a very high pressure game for them those
first two games of the season, the matches where they're
expected to be in the ascendency. So I just had

(20:45):
had a quick glance to and it's exactly what he
assumed it would be. It's sixty six percent possession, fifty
five percent possession.

Speaker 2 (20:53):
Weather. Sitting deeper.

Speaker 1 (20:57):
And kind of having to absorb the pressure against a
better team might actually suit them and keep the gaps
smaller so they're able to defend. Because some of the
goals in the opening day high line easy passes through
poor errors, so it might set the template for how
they need to be to be successful. So yeah, I

(21:18):
think a lot riding riding on that game.

Speaker 4 (21:21):
Big one before we do move on to Lead two.
I just want to talk about port Vale and maybe Cardiff. Yeah,
that was the Thursday night game on Telly.

Speaker 3 (21:29):
And I hate how certain TV whatever you want to
call him company.

Speaker 4 (21:36):
He spreads all the football across the weekend, but at
the same time, on a Thursday night, I love getting
stuck into a League one or League two game.

Speaker 3 (21:42):
It's quality and it gives.

Speaker 4 (21:43):
You a proper chance to unpack teams that you're just
not necessarily going to get to learn a lot about.

Speaker 3 (21:49):
In port Vale one of them. I foot Darren More
match day one.

Speaker 4 (21:52):
He kaibash their chances of a result at Rotherham because
he switched from a front two to a front three.
They got completely overrunn in the middle of park and
two goals down a man like a half time that
game was gone. But on Thursday she went back to
a front two, put Bryan and Curtis alongside to.

Speaker 3 (22:07):
Lodge to ledge water player what a.

Speaker 4 (22:09):
Player and it was It wasn't It wasn't surprising to
see how well they'd finished with front to last season
in League two, to see it's stifling Cardiff on Thursday
and on Cardiff it was. It was a disappointing performance.
Having I'm seeing him come back from behind on the
first game. I was really excited to see him. They've

(22:29):
got the co over. I was in the middle of
the park like and salak top like it will. It
played on the left like a real quality side, a
real highly regarded manager in Brian Barry Murphy, one who
gab Well for VFL knowledge rates so highly. I was
really excited to watch them from minute one and I
was slightly disappointed. And I don't want to take away
anything from port Vale because I think they did a

(22:50):
great job in stopping them, but I was a little
bit disappointed by Cardiff.

Speaker 1 (22:55):
They were really poor when port Vale deserved to win
the I thought it was really encouraging for fort Vale.

Speaker 3 (23:02):
Because they're the winners from this game, aren't they.

Speaker 2 (23:04):
Yeah, they.

Speaker 1 (23:07):
They probably fairly, it's not unfairly. They they built a
reputation being a very low margin team in league to
you know, ekeing out their wins, and they played some
really good football on Thursday. It wasn't the best game,
but they needed to make it a bit scrappy, but
they had all the momentum, especially in the last stages.
I thought George Buyers was really good just driving forward

(23:30):
in the last stages of the match, and Cardiff were
about begging for full time to get out of there
with a with a nil mill and I suppose in
in defense of Cardiff, it's probably a bit of a
shock to that team to go somewhere like port Vale,
more experienced players, more physical, and they didn't They didn't
cope very well with it, but they still came away

(23:53):
with a point and a clean sheet, so that might
stand them in good stead for later in the season.
I think if if they'd been for four points from
the first two games, that had probably taken it when
there are a massive work in progress as a young team.
So I don't think it's by any means a disaster
Cardiff because of the.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
Very very young eleven that they've got.

Speaker 1 (24:15):
I just don't think they're gonna they're going to be
able to start like that like everybody else. They might
be a team that comes on strong in the second
half of the season. It's why I was very skeptical.
So yeah, by no means a disaster, but yeah, port
Vale probably left thinking that was a chance for us
to win that game.

Speaker 4 (24:35):
Absolutely and not a warning. I don't know what, I
can't think of a phrase, but Salik took a kick
in the chops early on.

Speaker 3 (24:44):
Do you remember he had a bit of a swollen lip.

Speaker 4 (24:46):
It looked like when you're receiving treatment to me, allegedly,
I don't know if he was crying.

Speaker 3 (24:51):
I don't know if I've seen that, but he was
really upset and then he did nothing. So a perfect
example of how to creek Salek for the rest of
the league.

Speaker 4 (25:00):
Because he was the was he He weren't the favorite.
He was one of the top prices at the shortest
prices to win. I think he was favorite before a Yeah,
and if you want to keep him quiet, just kick
him in the head.

Speaker 2 (25:14):
Yeah, early on.

Speaker 1 (25:15):
Do it on a cold Tuesday night in Stoke. It
turns out well, cold Thursday night in Stoke or Burzilim,
so it turns out not so League two then, Yes,
Any particular takeaways from from the results on Saturday, all
the games on Saturday.

Speaker 4 (25:33):
In all of them helpfully lovely to see Harrogate might
be good.

Speaker 3 (25:41):
Do they do they ever lose? Do they ever get battered?

Speaker 2 (25:43):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (25:44):
They they play well against the better teams and then
they just lose against teams similar to themselves.

Speaker 3 (25:50):
Overachievers, aren't they?

Speaker 4 (25:51):
They always seem to get rid of theyre always seemed
like they're going to be in trouble. And then just
pull out these mad performances and results. Because Greensbury after
the after their first performance, the free no win against Crawley,
everyone were peering about them and Harry in the game
of the day in lead to six goal Thriller managed
to share the spoils and went within what a few
minutes of injury time of getting a really unlikely free

(26:13):
to victory. So I'm just delighted to see it's a
weaver just continue to just eke out these unbelievable performances
and results.

Speaker 3 (26:22):
But the standout result from the fourth tier has to
be a new puts win over Crawley.

Speaker 4 (26:28):
We raised the point on Thursday's betting show about Crawley's
betting price.

Speaker 3 (26:35):
They were one or two on.

Speaker 4 (26:36):
Obviously they've got the highly regarded Lindsay, they've got some
good players. But yeah, they've made a real slow start
to the campaign. It looks like it's Lindsay's ideas or
whatever he's trying to do is just not quite resonated
with the players, or there seems to be some sort
of confusion there. At the minute they were tunell down.
They've got a late late what prooved to Yeah.

Speaker 2 (26:56):
Yeah, they've got serious work to do, haven't they? So
that would be then.

Speaker 4 (27:03):
Yeah, on the flip side of the coin, Newport, what
is it?

Speaker 3 (27:06):
Four point six?

Speaker 2 (27:07):
How many points I'd tie?

Speaker 1 (27:09):
Harry get a new point And it's a bittersweet for Harrogate,
isn't it to be three one up with five minutes
to go and then winning in the ninety second minute
and to only draw but to go Bristol rovers and
win and then to go so close to beating Grimsby
at home? For both those teams and Newport top of
my head, who were they at home too? They were

(27:30):
at home to somebody pretty good, I mean day as well,
weren't they? They got a nil Hill draw nots County.

Speaker 2 (27:35):
Is that right? I'm going to be really happy with
my memory.

Speaker 3 (27:39):
If that is right, I'm taking it now. I'm taking
it now.

Speaker 2 (27:41):
There, I'm pretty sure it was so.

Speaker 3 (27:43):
Yes, one one's count one goal? Look didn't they penalty? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (27:46):
For both of them to get four points from not
in two games when they were the favorites for relegation,
that is a is a seriously good start and yeah,
plenty for them to build on. Completely contrasting situations with
during his first season as a manager, and a manager
who is the longest serving in the EFL. He's yeah,

(28:06):
he is, isn't he Yeah, he is the longer serving
in AFL. So yeah, very interesting. The big word on
Tranmere thrashing Shrewsbury for Nill that was a call from
Gab pre season about.

Speaker 2 (28:18):
Shrewsbury or a.

Speaker 1 (28:19):
Big candidate for back to back relegations because off the
field they're in the serious state of flux. Tramo I
really liked the look of being a dark horse. This
season started fantastically well. Seems like Andy Crosby was just
waiting to be a manager. There's been just something not
quite right with Nigel Ladkins being in charge, whether because

(28:40):
he never wanted to be went in his director of
football steps and his manager got a bit of a
uptick and it was just complete over hauling performances. After
Andy Crosby took over and he's just picked it straight
up from where he left off and just picking back
up on the thread that we were talking about on.

Speaker 2 (29:00):
This week's ACER.

Speaker 1 (29:01):
On Thursday, Paul One has just got m K Dons
conceding no goals, absolutely no goals. But also how do
we even how do we oppose MK Dons if not
any goals in.

Speaker 3 (29:14):
You can't, you can't. What is it now?

Speaker 4 (29:15):
Six games, zero goals conceded, three goals scored, beating.

Speaker 3 (29:20):
Barrow two nil.

Speaker 4 (29:21):
It looked like it was edging towards another Zip Zip,
but MK Dons turned it on late on in the game.
Was it two goals in the final twenty minutes and
its results performances the manner of the victory such as
this one that makes me think, oh, MK Dons going
to pick up earlier early then you anticipated, earlier than
we anticipated looking at how they'd started under one is it?

(29:45):
Is it the type of performance win result that sees
them sort of put the chest out and sort to
justify why they were shut out short such short price
favorites in the division.

Speaker 3 (29:56):
What do you think?

Speaker 1 (29:57):
Yeah, it makes a lot of sense, doesn't it that
he's gone about it the it's almost in a way
that as has disappeared in football. Do you know, fix
the defense first? Yep, Because now it's like watch your philosophy,
like instill your style of playing philosophy first. That's the

(30:18):
very in vogue way of managing.

Speaker 2 (30:21):
A football club.

Speaker 1 (30:22):
But it used to always be like somebody come in
let's keep a clean sheet and let's do that bit first.
But it's still paul One's way and MK Dons needed
that really with all the managerial change and attacking for
war against tuck in league too for far too long,
and it.

Speaker 2 (30:37):
It's definitely it's definitely working.

Speaker 4 (30:41):
Patterson with the second goal, When the hell did he
turn up at MKSS I had no idea?

Speaker 1 (30:46):
Is it about completely days two weeks ago or something?
Absolutely smashed it in, didn't he?

Speaker 3 (30:52):
No idea were there?

Speaker 1 (30:55):
And then yeah, already not dissimilar to what we were
saying about League One. You look towards the top of
the table and there's a lot of the clubs that
you would expects to field two wins from two no
goals conceded. Impressive to nil win for them and I
know that Tom. Unfortunately, then Tom not joined us on
the podcast today because his ceilings collapsed in his house,

(31:18):
which seems to be a bit of an epidemic in
our office because there's more than one person. Maybe there's
been these ceilings installed in the West Yorkshire area and
they all just had this the same time stamp on them.
I don't know, but yeah, Tom was a crew at
the weekend to see the third team that clinched this
week's Hacker ten to one travel for As, and he
was seriously seriously impressed with how they played a fantastic

(31:44):
strike from their left.

Speaker 2 (31:45):
Back Hutchinson re Sutchinson is it that he was very.

Speaker 1 (31:54):
Very impressed, But he was on the text to me
while I was at the barns of game saying you
need to watch this goal on the highlights.

Speaker 3 (32:00):
So he was impressed with Cruise very performance.

Speaker 4 (32:03):
Because I've seen the goals again a minute highlight reel
on the fl Highlights show and there were two really
nicely taking strikes out.

Speaker 3 (32:10):
But I was shame about his ceiling. I hope it
gets fixed, but.

Speaker 4 (32:14):
I really wanted to pick his brains about Crewe's actual
performance because when you see two really well taken goals,
it doesn't perhaps suggest that they deserve to win too
nil having known nothing about the game, so shame is
not here, but I'm interested to know that crew are
playing really well. Not a team we didn't expect to
kick on and have a good campaign this season, but
started really well.

Speaker 1 (32:35):
Yeah, and then the only other little points that I
was gonna make was Bristol Rovers. Then they've started the
season in the exact opposite fashion to what we'd anticipated.
Two defeats from two, So yeah, worries there for for

(32:55):
Daryl Clark.

Speaker 4 (32:56):
And yeah, on that, I was ignorant to the just
how good Darryl Clark was at this level, and when
I was doing my one to twenty twenty four to
one so predictions fully to the impossible task, I said,
just because Daryl Clark did well at Bristol.

Speaker 3 (33:12):
Rovers in the past, does that mean he's going to
do well here?

Speaker 4 (33:15):
I'm not sure, but I'm not claiming that to be
calling their portalt of the season. I was just grossly
misinformed about how good of a manager was at the level.

Speaker 3 (33:23):
But I don't think the job at hand. The gas
can be understated because.

Speaker 4 (33:31):
A lot of the fans have sort of coming out
on Twitter and saying, yeah, this was expected to be
some turnaround to try and get his back competing at
this level in it and that's certainly ringing true based
on their owning two performances, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (33:43):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (33:44):
Absolutely, And it doesn't get any easier for them. So
they go to Chesterfield at lunchtime on Saturday, which will
be a real litmus test for how much worker Daryl
Clark has managed to do.

Speaker 2 (33:58):
Yeah, not a lot else from me.

Speaker 1 (34:00):
Good to see Oldham they're another team at lunchtime on
Saturday when they take on Swindon.

Speaker 2 (34:06):
Good to see them.

Speaker 1 (34:07):
A couple of draws to start the season having been
out the Football League for a few years and just
had no success for nearly forty years. So yeah, good
positive signs for them, and that would be a really
interesting game against Swindon, a team that.

Speaker 2 (34:20):
Fancy to do well.

Speaker 1 (34:22):
The extra little note actually that I did have down
on Oldham, which is brilliant was the attendance at that
the Oldham games was the first match back in the
Football League for I mean, it's they haven't been out
of the league for that long.

Speaker 2 (34:38):
Haven't got the note?

Speaker 1 (34:38):
I think it was up towards like six thousand, which
at that level is absolutely outstanding. I'm going to no,
it's more I didn't want to overdo it was nearly
eight thousand people nice in League Two watching Oldham against
Colchester and so it's not like you're going to have
a huge, huge away following when it's such a big

(34:59):
trip that busts out the overall attendance, So that is fantastic.
Could you imagine anywhere else in the world, I say football,
massive year football where there's nearly eight thousand people there watching,
absolutely outstanding.

Speaker 3 (35:16):
It's absolutely massive. I'm just looking at the league table.

Speaker 4 (35:19):
There's one, two, three, four or five five teams on
zero points. Obviously we talked about the guests chelting them
also on no points. We've mentioned Crawley. The other two
teams down there.

Speaker 3 (35:28):
Barrow and Barnet.

Speaker 4 (35:29):
Barrow have had a ridiculously hard start to the season.
I don't think there's any any need whatsoever to be
worried about them. They played Chesterfield and ok Don's the
two anti post favorites for the title, so don't need
to read too much into their opening two results or performances,
which by all accounts were very impressive. I know for
a fight because I listened to on VC Radio chef

(35:51):
Chesterfield managers played were really impressed by the way they
set their still out on opening day and again it
looked like a similar performance based on the balance of
play against them down so I.

Speaker 3 (36:01):
Think they'll be just fine. But I just wanted to
raise Barnet. They've had a brutal start to Is it
a return to the fortier.

Speaker 4 (36:10):
Of course, it is a return to the fourtier, and
I mean come up highly regarded side. Obviously broke the
one hundred point finished one hundred and two points I think.

Speaker 3 (36:17):
In the National League.

Speaker 4 (36:18):
Unbelievably good campaign, unbelievably good at home, free scorer, in
really nice football.

Speaker 3 (36:25):
Really quality side.

Speaker 4 (36:26):
They was backed by a few people to really upset
the apple cart in terms of breaking in to the
top seven. Of course, Chesterfield, Notts County, Wrexham all come
up from non league recently and punched like immediately established
themselves at the level. Who else with stopport again another
team that's done it, but Bromley having a little bit

(36:47):
of t even issues so far. But to be fair
to them, they played Bromley at the weekend. The team
now grizzly. Grizzly yeah, very horrible.

Speaker 3 (36:56):
You will call them.

Speaker 4 (36:57):
I'm going to call them in an established league two
side top half finished last season and then they started
the season with four points, so a real tough test
with them. So I'd be interested to see how Barnet reacts,
how they adapt to the level, how they adapt to
the changing circumstances with the teams that they're playing because
they'll have had it in the National League where the
onus is on then to break them down. But obviously
going up a division, the equality of toe the Nows

(37:20):
is going to be a step up and so far.

Speaker 3 (37:24):
Shrewsbury and Bromley that they've struggled.

Speaker 1 (37:27):
So one little plug that I forgot to do at
the start of the show is we also have a

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
