Speaker 1 (00:09):
Hey there, Hey there, hey there, welcome on in it's
time four Three guys Before the game, Episode number six
hundred and seventy nine. Our title, WVU football signs, WVU
basketball shines. Okay, Signing Day coming up. Yeah, I guess,
(00:31):
I guess I made have buried the lead that the
Mountaineers did play a football game on Saturday, or I've
just kind.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Of moved to day.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
I just kind of barry would be a good word.
I'll just kind of use the move ahead. We will
talk about the season finale for the footballers. We will
talk about West Virginia's busy week in basketball. Took off
the lid yesterday over the Mercyhursts sixteen second half points
for the visitors.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Wasn't sure they were going to get to ten in
the second half. Therefore, I was a heck of a
defensive effort, a bit.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Of a struggle. Busy week for the Mountaineers. They go
again on Wednesday and then on Saturday. Plus we got
that event coming up in Charleston on Friday with Rich Rodriguez.
Mountaineer football making its way down to the capital city.
Let's do this thing. Three guys brought to us by

Law they won't take no for an answer, And by

Speaker 2 (02:02):
By the way, I like it.
Speaker 4 (02:04):
I like it when coaches in basketball called timeouts, not
not after the other team does a big run, but
when they see something that just horrifies them.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
What does that mean?
Speaker 4 (02:15):
Which coach Hodgson in the first half there was something happened.
I figure tell me the circumstances like time out, time out,
and he saw something he didn't like. Even though West
Virginia was going to be in command of the game. Yeah,
you got the young man aside and discussion with him.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
What he didn't like is called no defense.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Those two straight lapses. He said, all right, that's enough.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Yeah, they called it. I like that. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Interesting.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
Otherwise, uh, pretty stout defensive effort.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
There, seventy to thirty eight. I'm sure someone's dug into this.
I probably should have dug in it was the last
time a team scored sixteen or fewer.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
I looked at the thirty eight.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
You got to go back to twenty seventeen to find
the last time a team scored that fewer points against
West Virginia Coppin State. Interestingly, Western his next opponent was
the last one to be held to thirty eight points
in the coliseum.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
Unfortunately, it was a weekend where we were digging into
the record books football wise. I was watching the football
I was watching the football games Saturday night, and I
saw the lower third go through on the West Virginia
score and it said worst loss since eighteen ninety one?
Speaker 2 (03:24):
What really?
Speaker 1 (03:25):
Yeah? Is that right? Margin? Yeah? Eighteen ninety one, fifth
worst loss of all time. You got that one Michigan
game there remember when Fielding used to beat US one
hundred and something to Yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
If Miami probably rolled up a big number one time.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Yeah, they were in the at that time. They had
any Testaverdi and all that gang. Yeah, eighty six game.
I believe that was Irvin, Michael Irvin. Yeah, pretty good players.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
So Texas Tech was as advertising. I mean, that's I know,
hop he's got a couple observations. I'll give you a
few stats. Although it's not necessarily, it was just I
think that was the overall theme of the day. Tech
was as at that's a really good that's a national
championship type of team.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
They'll they'll be in the hunt.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
I would think, hey, producer, Jake, let's do this. As
we get into Hoppies Obvious Observations. Last time out, I
asked for an animated graphic of what we could use
when Hoppy's his observation song is on several candidates, you guys,
go ahead and make the make the call. Uh these
people selected. So there's one just Hoppies obvious observation. It's
(04:27):
a very very you know, very professional. Look you got
that one, or you could go to this one, which
happens to be my favorite Hoppy Kerchie of Ole, Captain Obvious, Gollo, No,
it looks like quirky to clowna er, some kind of
a sailor hat. Yeah, And then just another Hoppy's obvious observations.
And then there was one more Hoppy with with a
(04:50):
cold beer. Which one you guys want to go? You
like this one?
Speaker 2 (04:55):
I'm not sure. The face looks a ton like Hoppy.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
But where do you go want to go with it?
Hop Did you like the captain's hat?
Speaker 4 (05:01):
I like the fact the last one gave me a
lot of hair, which I appreciate. The captain's hat, I
mean corky the clown look, but but probably appropriate.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Captain obvious, Jake, could you please put the one back
up there? He's got some kind of a sailor suit
on or something like that.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Segment has gone from just nothing to there's a lot
of production.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Please time bomb ready.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Heaven know who's.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
Take it quick?
Speaker 1 (05:26):
Don't let that bladder blow go? Obviousvation had ladies and
gentlemen here he is Captain Obvious with his obvious observations
the game.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
What do you say You've played a really good team
that performed at a high level, and your season long deficiencies,
Brad were exposed once again by a good team. Better
than a good team, a very good team. Uh they
have a really good defense, you got You talked about
that going in in the matchup of West Virginia's offensive
(06:04):
line against their defensive line. That defensive front is clearly
the best West Virginia's faced all year, and it became
evident in the first couple of series like, uh oh,
this is gonna be a problem, and it was all day.
So that's the game. I'll move on from the game.
You ended the season with four victories. W Vegas had
West Virginia five and a half wins, so without significant injuries,
(06:28):
you probably would have gotten to five. I think. Uh So,
the season was about what was if you were If
you're an objective.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
Observer, Objective is the keyword here.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
Objective is the key The season was about what you
could reasonably expect as an objective observer. I don't think
you could have expected a lot more. Rich Rodriguez said
after the game, and I thought that's what the story
to me was what Rich said after the game. I've
done this long enough. I know our problems, I know
how to fix our problems, and it's painful to do,
(07:00):
but we'll do it. I'll fix our problems. Some of
them can be fixed pretty quickly. Some of them may
take a little time, but I know what they are.
And he kept coming back to this theme as soon
as he said to the press, as soon as I
leave you fantastic people, I'm going to go recruiting. That
to me, guys, that's the story that rich Rod. He's
been a head coach for twenty eight years. He's been
(07:22):
in football all his life. He's won games, he's lost games.
He has been hired, he's been fired. He's hired coaches,
he's fired coaches. I have no doubt he knows what
the issues are after this long season, Now go fix it,
and he seems determined to do that. I think that's
that's what the story is.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
Yeah, he had a walk down the hall just to
go recruiting. There's sixteen at sixteen visits this weekend, plus
we're bringing guys in during the last past week. So yeah,
they were getting their last surge in there.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
So that's I don't get I didn't get real flipped
out about the season, you know, I Mean we saw
a pretty early what it was going to be we
were pleasantly surprised when they showed you more effort after
a kind of a bad mid season low and so, okay, whatever,
I would not be surprised. And if there weren't a
(08:16):
coaching change or two on his staff, I don't have any.
I'm not trying to be flippant here and say I
know what's gonna happen. I don't know that. I'm not
predicting that. I just wouldn't be surprised because he said, look,
he's not satisfied with the season. Everything is being reviewed everything, everybody, everything,
So you wouldn't be surprised.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
No, I mean, if there's the reality of it is
there's over twenty coaches on the staff, So just by
human just by normally, whether you just went undefeated or
whether you just lost every single game, there's going to
be change. That's the given. That's the given. There's going
to be changed.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
Here's another note. I was thinking about this, and this
is gonna come. People are going to say you're making
excuses or but as my late mother used to say,
misery loves company. You know, Baylor and Kansas finished with
five wins. The fans there should be more bummed out
than West Virginia fans.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
That Kansas thing is interesting, isn't it. Well, they've put
a ton of resources into the stadium to their nil.
They thought they had the golden goose there in Lance Lightphold.
They thought they were off and running, and that has
been a really disappointing program.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
For two straight years now.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
I don't think there's anybody over there that thought this
season was going to result in a non Bowl season
for them, So that they've got some Listen, they did
a great job getting it back from where that can't
sparger movie.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
There's no question.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
But now again this is just in it is hard
to take the next step.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
And like you said, stadium Lance Lighthold, Lance Lighthold in
his fifth year, sixth year starting quarterback.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
Ye is there this is our year again significant nil
resources being pushed in that that we've got the coaching
staff and two straight non bowl seasons with that same quarterback. Yeah,
I agree, that's there's got to be some Angston Laura,
I would think so that that's not.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
To say, well, they hadn't been a year two. It's
just to say, as you said, it is hard.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
Kansas State, Kansas.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
State thrilled in Manhattan for a preseason Big twelve favorite.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
Yeah, and I would I would say even to a degree,
Iowa State. I mean they won eight games, but even
then might be well, I thought we were going to
be in the win the league, you know, So that's
it's tough out there.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
It's tough out there, right, Yes, I mean, if you
if you had to say at the start of the
season realistically, which team should do poorly, you would say
West Virginia and UCF because they both made coaching changes.
Oklahoma States its own animal because Gundy, right, and the
firing that took place so early, So you get that one.
(10:46):
Colorado they lose a Heisman, they lose an NFL quarterback,
so to speak, and they go down there. They're three
and nine. That's not where they should be either if
everything was built properly. And then as you said, Baylor
goes five and seven, Kansas goes five and seven. Cincinnati
had an improved year, but then they got really cold
(11:07):
at the end. They finished seven and five and five
and four in the league. And then after that it's
TCU at eight and four, five and four, and as
you guys said, k State, and he's taken a ton
of criticism. He broke down two games ago postgame, just
kind of threw his hands up and said like, hey,
we got injuries, we got stuff going on here like
(11:29):
B B and so yeah, you could you could make
a case for why this happened. However, however, next year
is next year. Well that makes this coming season so important.
Speaker 4 (11:43):
And I'm coming to that. Okay, I stand by the
fact that this was year zero.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
I don't buy that. For Rich Rodriguez, this was year one.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
It was remarkable, remarkable story brad in the return of
Rich Rodriguez. But think remember this this time last year.
In fact, on this day, one year ago, Neil Brown
was fired December first one, really December one. Okay, so
one year ago today, West Virginia didn't have a coach
and did not have a coach until two weeks later
(12:13):
when Rich Rodriquez was hired. After high school recruiting was
done and for the most part, for much of the
portal was done. So he got a late he got
a late start, and that's not I don't think that's
an excuse, but I think that's an accurate observation of
what he came into.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
I agree, Okay, So I.
Speaker 4 (12:32):
Still say it's it's year zero. Now you do expect
more next year? What is that? We'll talk about that
a lot before the year, before the season gets here.
So he says he knows what the problems are. He
says he knows how to fix him. Some will take
longer than others, but he'll get it done. He's paid
to get it done.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
So we'll see.
Speaker 4 (12:51):
But you put a rap on your zero and move
on on the basketball team. I'll leave most of that
to you. I'll say that coming off a really tough,
disappointing losses in Charleston, it's nice to come back home
and just you know, beat the leather off somebody, just
(13:13):
and beat the tar out of somebody. And that's what
they did. So that was that was That was a
good healthy game for West Virginia.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
Yeah, absolutely was.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
And that's what I got. Okay, well, wait, that means
I have to do this.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
I got no more in basketball. I mean, I'll leave
that to you guys, but I.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
Well, that was something there. He is captain obvious. You
know the people that just listen, now, they're gonna get
angst because they're gonna have They're gonna go to the
YouTube site just so they can see the graphic of
hobby who knows is gonna drive some people crazy pulling
off the road right now.
Speaker 4 (13:54):
Yeah, probably get uh busted for impersonating an officer there.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
I tell you what, You walk into lou Wendel with
that outfit on, you're gonna get yourself a hell of
a deal.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
I might sell that at lou Wendel.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
Could you put that back up again? Yeah, so there
it is right there.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
Might sell that hat down there.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
Hey, can I make Can I make a request sure
on that graphic?
Speaker 1 (14:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (14:18):
Is make that more generic? I don't want the I mean,
that's somebody's uniform that actually was in the service and
did amazing things.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
And I don't want I don't want that's a I generated.
It's no one's uniform.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
Well, well, well say I generated, but stop you know
what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
No, he doesn't. He's looking at you like you're crazy. No,
I don't want.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
I don't want to be missing. I would like that
to be taked.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
You don't want me stolen valor on that thing?
Speaker 4 (14:43):
Thank you? That's what you're that's what you're Yes, I
do not want stolen valor, So please clean that up.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Well.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
Number one we did.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
Sure there would be confusion on stolen valor though on
that one when you have Captain obvious about I appreciate
the sentiment. I understand what you're saying. I think people
can tell that's parody. Think I'm not sure they'd be confused. Oh,
look at hoppy service there, service forty years also is
a distinguished military career.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
I don't I mean, I don't think that would happen.
Speaker 1 (15:11):
Hoppy was an admiral. Well, that's admirable of you too.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
Well, that's that is a fair point on your part
that no one would confuse me with a somebody who
accomplished military service. I would just like to not have
stolen valor and just have it be more generic.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
So I'm saying, okay, fine, do anything. We can't do
anything anymore, I mean nothing at all. Three guys brought
to us by lou Wendel Marine Sales. You walk in
there and see if they have the uniform that Hoppy
was wearing. I do know this. They've got the avalon
pontoon boats, which are made one in the United States
of America, made right here in the state of Michigan,
(15:47):
and long time and then the new designation for Lou Wendell,
that Honda Premium Dealership designation, the only one in the state.
And they've got that three hundred horse power McLaren engine.
Now it just goes, goes. It could take Captain Obvious
over here right down the Old River really quick. So
check out lou Wendell Marine Sales at lou Wendel Marine
(16:10):
Sales dot com, or if you'd like to stop by,
they'd love to see you. Located in Saint Albans. Okay,
so we're clean on that clean.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
Before we go spreads on sets. Let's have a let's
have a college football discussion for a second. Oh this
is a wild, beautiful sport, isn't it. It's just unbelievably nuts,
just absolutely nuts in a couple of ways. And it
continues to be driven by hope, hoppy And that's what
that's what you're saying. You go through the year West
Virginia did, and how quick, so much time spent, not
(16:42):
just us but the fan base looking forward to the
season and talking about the season hypotheticals and all our
ridiculous over unders that we talk about, and we dive
into the numbers and we go through all this and
then we just quickly. I played a game. All right,
move on, now's recruiting season. We just move on to
recruiting season, right, and like okay, can't wait? Okay, who
got here? Guys are flipping, rumors of flips going on
(17:02):
all over the place. College football fans are unlike any
other in the college sports ecosystem, which is weird in
and of itself. Football is a whole separate animal. You
have Rick Patino, of all guys, coming out this week
of all the chaos Patino has been involved in, and
he's coming out hammering college football, saying what exactly are
(17:24):
we doing out here as a sport when just stop
for a minute and say it out loud with this
Lane Kiffin mess. And we're not an old miss podcast,
so we're not gonna dwell on this, but I do
think it's worth noting what Patino said. And he's right,
he goes it's like all of a sudden, we have
a great basketball season and I up and leave before
March happens. Right, that wouldn't happen, Right, doesn't happen. But
(17:44):
in college football we just accept this. The SEC hired
like thirty seven new head coaches yesterday, Right, Lane Kiffin
is leaving an historic season. At ole Miss goes to
the airport and there's hundreds, if not thousands of people
there flipping them off, screaming fu just utter chaos at
the airport. Right there's still games being played.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
What are we doing? So what it says, what is happening?
Speaker 1 (18:10):
So what it says to what it says is he
does not truly think his team can win the national championship,
so he's walking. But he made his pitch, He made
his pitch to stay, and they went like, no, we're
not doing that. But it is so all of that.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
I mean, even if he doesn't think they can win,
it the fact that you have to make a decision
to leave your team when that's coming. And I don't
I don't know that I blame ole Miss either for
not keeping him around to coach.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
That's weird too.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
You've decided to leave us and go to a conference rival,
but now we're going to leave you here. But now
the staff is gutted to some extent. What chances do
they have? Will they get into the playoff? Will the
Goofy committee go, oh well, not the same left Florida
State out because you didn't have your cord that just
that process is weird.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
What are we talking about?
Speaker 3 (18:54):
No other sport does that. The NFL doesn't go well,
So and so's injured, they're going to be out of
the playoffs this year. It is just such a bizarre
it is ecosystem that we live in. And then you've
got so think of LSU for a second. You're paying
Brian Kelly fifty three million to not come to the office,
and now you have agreed to pay Lane Kiffin's playoff
(19:15):
bonuses from ole Miss even though he's not coaching that team.
Did you see that report?
Speaker 2 (19:19):
I didn't see that.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
LSU is gonna pay for ole Miss's success in the
playoffs if that comes.
Speaker 1 (19:25):
Did they add that governor about that yet? Did they
add the governor? Did the governor that ain't gonna make
no bad deal no more? But that big number looked
like it going to Lane.
Speaker 3 (19:32):
Shouldn't you probably forfeit your playoff performance bonus if you're
not coaching in the playoffs. Well, but yet LSU says, okay, yeah,
we'll pay you that too, And everybody screams about not
having any money and that you're paying a guy who's
not even coaching it's not your team. LSU is going
to pay a bonus for Mississippi winning a game. Just
stop there, full stop?
Speaker 1 (19:52):
How weird? Is that unbelievable?
Speaker 3 (19:55):
And all congratulations, O miss just won a game here,
like if it will pay you, you're our head coach,
will pay you for all miss and all.
Speaker 4 (20:01):
And for about five days, it was just what's len
Kiffin gonna do? What's he gonna do, what's he gonna do,
what's he gonna do?
Speaker 2 (20:06):
What's he gonna do? What's he gonna do?
Speaker 4 (20:07):
I mean, once once he didn't say he was staying
at Ole Miss, didn't just say I'm staying at Old Miss.
And once he was out of floor, like you know
what's gonna happen? It was working out the detail.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
And just that that guy just utter chaos follows him.
Remember when he left Tennessee. That's a while ago now
and there's been some image rehab, but the same thing
happened to him at Tennessee. He almost couldn't get out
of that conference room when he announced he was leaving Tennessee,
people screaming fu and middle finger. It just it is
just so we don't need to dwell on it. That
should have gone onto your captain obvious segments there. I'm
not breaking any new ground there. I just again, I've
(20:40):
been around this my whole professional life, and I'm still
baffled by the sport of college football. Outside the lines,
we always say, and that's what that's what makes it
so compelling, is all of this chaos and weirdness that
goes on then in other walks of life wouldn't necessarily happen.
And then you're just drawn back in because the drama
of the action on the field is just so good, right,
(21:02):
and the playoffs are going to start, and however weird
it gets by, who gets in and who doesn't get in,
and the debates of who should be in or not.
That stuff's going to start and we're going to be
glued to it because we love the actual game action.
Remarkable sport.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
What's quite remarkable is this, Supposedly the smartest people in
our country are university presidents. Right, They're the ones that
are running this, They're the ones that are making the rules.
And it couldn't be any worse than it is. Now,
what does that say? Now you've got honorary doctorates from
(21:35):
a bunch of colleges. I mean you would think, I mean,
you shoulder up with these people. You would think at
some point the highest level of presidents would say, no,
this is exactly how this is going to work, and
it does not happen.
Speaker 4 (21:50):
Do you think the president of LSU go to the
athletic director and say, listen, for the greater good of
our university, just wait until all this is over, then
we'll hire a coach. Do you think he could do that.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
I think LSU could have maybe said we are not
paying our football coach if another school wins a game.
I mean, I think Lane Kiffin was probably still going
to take the LSU job. But if you tell Jimmy Sex,
then no, get that clause out of there. We're not
paying that, and I get it.
Speaker 1 (22:17):
Listen.
Speaker 3 (22:18):
We don't have to get into the politics of why
these deals get done like they do.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
I mean, it's all based upon the recruiting.
Speaker 3 (22:23):
We know how it works and we know how it goes.
But that seemed to be one that I would think
LSU could have said no to this, but they're paying.
LSU is paying one of its employees if Ole Miss
wins a playoff game.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
And Mark Stoops will receive thirty seven million dollars. Also
for not coaching. They whacked him thirty seven million. He
puts him in the top five of buyouts.
Speaker 4 (22:47):
The other side of that is as all that chaos
goes on and bowl games come up, Look this West
Virginia team, if somehow they had scratched out a bowl game,
you'd go, well, it's kind of amazing they did it.
Almost I think there's a sense of kind of relief,
like it's over, it's over, get started on what's next.
Recruct and don't worry about bowl game, don't worry about
(23:10):
who you're not hiring a new head coach, I mean,
get busy.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
And so that's where I go back to where I started,
as this little diatribe is about hope, and the whole
thing's built on hope. Like that, that's why you're moving
on from coaching. Is Kentucky gonna be demonstrably better next
year because Mark Stoops isn't there? And then factor in
that you just have to give him thirty seven million.
Are they going to suddenly win eleven next year? Your
chances are no, Right, it's unlikely that that happens. But
(23:35):
they also can't continue with Mark Stoops has been there.
Whatever he's been thirteen years and you've done probably all
you can do. If you're Mark Stoops, you can't take
it to the next level. So they need to have
some hope and need to continue the fundraising part of
what they do and get off under it. So they
bring a new coach in, regardless of who that is
and who's left at this point. If you're Kentucky, but
you're gonna go out and you're doing that for hope,
(23:56):
and Arkansas feels it has hope with Ryan Silverfield, and
then alexash is going to wherever the hell he's going.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
I can't even keep track of who's going where.
Speaker 3 (24:03):
But for every one of those fan bases thinks that
even if they don't think they have the next great coach,
they've just reset the hope meter. And that's what all
of this is about. It's about resetting the hope meter
across college.
Speaker 4 (24:17):
But for every you're right, but for every school that
just reset the hope meter, another school was saying, some
of them, we had to go on here at North
Texas had a good guy. Now we got to go
find a new head coach or a tu Lane or
you know, fifteen to twenty other places they got to.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
Start over once. Do you think Penn State wants to
make a hire? Are they just going to go like
arm or I mean, do they know they have an opening?
They had to fire their guy, like back in July
or whenever they fired hit, they had to fire their guy.
I could not wait on James Franklin got to make
a change, and they're sitting out there. Everybody's hired two
coaches since they have made a hire Penn State.
Speaker 1 (24:54):
No, they haven't opening.
Speaker 4 (24:56):
Some coaches have been hired and fired paging Penn State.
Speaker 1 (24:59):
That's a good point, that's a good art we're doing.
Speaker 3 (25:02):
James Franklin's been on the job at Virginia Tech for
two months.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
Penn Saint still doesn't have a coach.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
Ext for allowing me sec I think you make some
valid points about all that. Yeah, it's as crazy as
it's ever been. It's never been this zany No.
Speaker 3 (25:18):
Don't give I don't have and I don't want to
sit and just complain and rail and then not have
good answers. But at some point, man, you've got to
try and work on this calendar. And I know there's
not an easy answer. I would think you've already been there,
but the calendar is just an abject disaster, Just an
abject disaster.
Speaker 1 (25:36):

there's like smudgel, you know, smudgel on the buttons because
the phone's just too old and you look at like
the six. The six has got some kind of a stick,

Hop, Yeah, I was just checking something. I'm good, Thank you.
Speaker 1 (27:06):
What do you mean for checking something?
Speaker 4 (27:08):
Well, I'm working on I'm I'm spending ninety percent of
my time with you guys, but ten percent i'm working
on something else.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
Another hire for the athletic department or what.
Speaker 4 (27:19):
No, I'm a never mind.
Speaker 1 (27:21):
It's just a news is it sports related or as
a news related it's news related.
Speaker 4 (27:25):
I'm good, I'm good. Sorry I wasn't completely tuned in there.
Speaker 1 (27:29):
I hate to see it come to this. Bread guy
goes to the sahara, puts a monkey on his head.
He comes back totally.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
Changed running around with monkeys on your head.
Speaker 1 (27:39):
Boa constrict him out, have squeezed just enough oxygen out
of you that you're just not right anymore.
Speaker 4 (27:45):
Been identified as patient zero now by the athletic director.
Speaker 1 (27:49):
You you gave your disease to Wren. It's ridiculous. Wren's down.
Didn't even go to the game yesterday.
Speaker 4 (27:54):
I tranked him this morning. Says he's feeling a little better,
but he was sick.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
Oh yeah, he was down. He made it to the
football state in their Saturday, but could not do basketball.
Three guys before the game is brought to us by
Conley's CPA Group. They're the sponsor four spreads on stats.
Brad's gonna bust into some of these numbers that that
were historic complete service public accounting and consultation firm serving
clients throughout our state and surrounding states. Forty year anniversary
(28:19):

will guide you. They do so much more than just
your taxes. Hey, well you do my taxes. Hey, They're like,
we will consult and give you great guidance of how
to best handle your business operations. So good. In fact,
they take care of three guys before the game. This
massive media empire that we've built, we just.
Speaker 4 (28:42):
Show up with a bunch of receipts.
Speaker 2 (28:44):
Receipts figured it out.
Speaker 1 (28:45):
We're probably not that big because when we walk in,
they just get a number two pencil rather than even
taking the computer out of it. What do you guys have? Okay, fine,
here's what it is? All right? What are we doing here?
Speaker 3 (28:54):
A couple notes not we're not dwelling on this because
it's Hope season. Hoppy, so we're not gonna dwell on he.
Speaker 1 (29:00):
Just however, there's only one Hope Coliseum. Just remember that.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
Yeah, we'll go back.
Speaker 3 (29:07):
Let's look at a couple of things we said on
Wednesday's preview show, just see how those turned out.
Speaker 2 (29:12):
Hopy.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
I went through all those national rankings of that Tech defense,
just talk about how dominant they've been, and the one
really that jumped out the most to me, Texas Tech
was number one nationally and available yards for opposing offenses
coming in, they were allowing their opponents to gain just
twenty eight percent of yards that were available, which is
this numblieable number. West Virginia's offense really struggled Saturday to
(29:34):
get anything going couldn't throw it well, couldn't run it well,
but yet game thirty one percent of available yards. And
what jumped out to me with that is that's how
dominant Tech has been. Like, if you just watched that game,
you would not have guessed that West Virginia was over
that twenty eight right. If I would have said you
over under twenty eight percent of yards, you was said under, Yeah,
Western couldn't move it. That's how dominant that Tech defense
has been. That West Virginia struggled as mightily as it
(29:57):
did and yet still got above number one of the
other ones we talked about number twenty three nationally and
third down success that played out. West Virginia was just
twenty four percent on third downs, ninth percentile nationally. Coming
out of that game, third down distance to go Tech
held teams to seven point four yards, that was top
thirty nationally. West Virginia averaged seven point three yards on
(30:21):
late down, So you saw why West Virginia struggled offensively.
We talked about Westernian's ability to hold up front was
going to be the whole part of the game. If
Westervirdinia was going to hang around, it had to have
some semblance of protection. Up front, we mentioned how that
was going to be difficult. Tech came in in the
ninety ninth percentile in havoc percentage. We talked about Tech
facing an average of only twenty eight run plays per game,
(30:43):
seventh nationally and thirty nine pass plays, and that's part
of where the havoc would come from. They get ahead,
you got to throw the ball. They could pin their
ears back with their front four and come get you.
How did those all play out? West Virginia or excuse me,
Texas Tech against West Virginia created havoc on twenty four
percent of West Virginia's offensive plays. That put Tech in
the ninety fifth percentile, so actually slightly down from where
(31:06):
it had been on the season, but still a big number.
Texas Tech faced just twenty two rush plays and thirty
two pass attempts, so that played out exactly as we
thought it would. West Virginia had to go to the
air a lot more. This may surprise you, Hoppy, West
Virginia actually created more havoc plays during that game than
Tech did what eighteen to thirteen. Now, percentage wise, it
(31:27):
was as much because Tech ran more plays, but West
Virginia created eighteen havoc plays in that particular game. Another
indication of how dominant Texas Tech has been. It gave
up zero points to West Virginia. You mentioned how it's
the largest margin of defeat in over a century. They
held West Virginia to a twenty two percent success rate offensively,
(31:48):
which is in the zero percentile category not good. And
yet that was its second lowest defensive grade of the
season per PFF. Zero points, a zero percentile success rate
for West Virginia, and it was the second worst defensive
grade they've got this season. They've just been utterly dominant.
It's been a historic season for that Texas Tech defense.
(32:11):
That's really it for football. You could go deeper, there's
no reason too. It's just time to move on from
that game.
Speaker 4 (32:16):
You know what you saw repeatedly, and Tony, when you knew,
you found out, you knew very quickly you were going
to have time to draw back and pass. You can't
pass downfield, so what do you do?
Speaker 1 (32:24):
Throw out?
Speaker 4 (32:24):
Throw out to the flat, left and right, and even
those plays where you're supposed to get blocks from receivers,
Texas Tech was all over you. I mean, they just
have guys, they're just like there, and you did not
giving guys a chance to make a play.
Speaker 2 (32:37):
They were just really really good. Yeah, we talked about that.
Wins that help.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
Really the way to beat them the way Arizona State did.
They just hit a couple of plays downfield on fifty
to fifty balls because they're going to smother you up
top and tell you go ahead, try and beat us
on the back end. We don't think you can because
we're gonna get pressure on you before you have a
chance to throw it out. The only way to go
against them, it seems, is to throw it up downfield
and hope you make a couple of those plays.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
In West Virginia couldn't.
Speaker 1 (33:01):
So, at least on paper. This is this Saturday's game
between Texas Tech and BYU for the Big twelve Championship.
They've already played Texas Tech disposed of them. Will anything
change Probably not.
Speaker 2 (33:15):
I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (33:16):
Give me Tech. I'm anxious to see what they can
do in the playoff. I think that's a really good team.
And if you look at some of those metrics that
usually forecast who the national champion is going to be,
Tech is in that small select group of four to
six teams that it fits some of those numbers. I
think they have a legitimate chance here.
Speaker 1 (33:32):
I spoke with one of the Texas tech folks who's
been there for a number of years before Saturday's game,
and they have a lot of similarity fan base wise
to West Virginia in that they've had some heartbreak through
the years. They've had some that have been just taken
(33:53):
right from them at the moment that it was there
that they could touch it. And he told me, he goes, like,
this is so un chartered territory for us, Like I'm nervous,
is hacked? Like sure he had imposter syndrome. Yeah, right,
Like we don't desert like looking exactly like he literally said,
like like we're just looking around, like is this gonna end?
Because we've gotten this closed before and you get slammed down.
(34:15):
He goes, I'm no uncomfortable. I get it.
Speaker 4 (34:19):
Welcome to our world, right, I get it. Yeah, But
I'll tell you what they But we've seen a lot
of teams in a lot of games. They got a chance.
I don't think they got a chance to win at all.
I mean, Ohio State to me is just better than everybody.
But they got a chance to do a little bit.
Speaker 1 (34:35):
Man, do something.
Speaker 2 (34:36):
The ball right there.
Speaker 3 (34:37):
Man, you bring those you bring those dudes up front
to the table. They are going to be right there.
I mean, they're gonna be right there. I know Michigan
supposedly has a pretty good defense. I don't know that
Ohio State seeing it looks like Texas text defensive front.
And we'll see if those two meet up in Texas
and yeah, Ohio State lace fifty six on them, I'll
eat my words. But that that's a that's a quality
team there.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
And at this point, you just got to now that
they're away from us, is root for the league in
the playoffs, big needs good pr Like the worst thing
that could happen is they get bumped early and people
go like, what was that? That was your champion? What
are we doing here? So you need you need them
to run. We play there again next year in Lubbock.
I might get a little opportunity just kind of skipping
(35:15):
for a year or so. But now out to Lubbock
next year.
Speaker 4 (35:19):
I did get I got a little ruffled there during
the game when it brought in Rodriguez. He ran for
a touchdown and then he brought him into and he
threw the past, and I thought, don't you come.
Speaker 1 (35:32):
In here and have that guy throwing.
Speaker 4 (35:33):
I got a little worked up about that. Then I
I thought, now now you're just now you're throwing it.
Speaker 1 (35:40):
What are you doing? What are you doing?
Speaker 4 (35:41):
And then I backed off and I thought, no, it's
our it's West Virginia's job to stop what they're doing.
Speaker 1 (35:46):
Ben Cutter did, and Ben Cutter did on that play,
mister Ryan T. Ben Cutter, Yeah, fake punt was a
little something though, so apparently we're gonna say it was
a read and the punter took off on his own. Okay,
oh yeah, it's total bull crap.
Speaker 2 (36:00):
I think that's when you just file away.
Speaker 1 (36:01):
Yeah, I just think, yeah, that rich one.
Speaker 3 (36:04):
Like I'm I normally I normally side on the the
scoring or do you keep throwing on? That's your job?
Speaker 1 (36:11):
Your job is that?
Speaker 3 (36:12):
That rarely ruffles me. Fake punts maybe you're kind of
in a different category.
Speaker 1 (36:15):
I'm not sure you, but they are. They just is
that all?
Speaker 3 (36:18):
Like you say, it's a reed and it was a
coverage and it was open and it was there and
it was taken and fine, I mean again, fine, it
is ultimately your job to stop them. If you're ever
in a position the other way, they'll go ahead and
just rewind the tape.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
That's that's all.
Speaker 3 (36:31):
Yeah, that's that's how that's how you ratify that. That's
all you can do. They're laying it to you. That's
part of the deal, so so be it. And people
and on the back front, put.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
It on your play sheet.
Speaker 3 (36:41):
And if you ever have an opportunity again, go ahead.
Speaker 4 (36:43):
And teams are looking for some style points too, that's fine.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (36:47):
People don't give you a hand up when you're on
your back.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
Nobody helps, nobody helps you.
Speaker 3 (36:52):
So just not helping anybody else up. Agreed, When the
tides turn, you're not helping anybody else up.
Speaker 4 (36:59):
Well turn the tide.
Speaker 1 (37:01):
That's good, the tide. It goes back to the old
thing when Stevie Slayton and Pat White running all over Maryland.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
He didn't help them up. No, go ahead, putting all
divine in there.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
He was a move on. You know, he's just gonna
laugh at at hall.
Speaker 1 (37:12):
One of these days. One of these days the table
will be turned. West Virginia will score late touchdown games
over they'll go for two. After the game, reporter will ask,
why do you go for the two because I couldn't
go for three. That's what you gotta come back on.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
Side kick.
Speaker 1 (37:29):
Coming up. West Virginia's basketball team now six and two
after a seventy to thirty eight victory over Mercyhurst. Three
guys before the game is brought to us by Jan
Dill's Attorneys at Law with clients in all fifty of
our states. They specialize in Social Security benefit claims and
military disability claims. And it is an arduous process and
(37:53):
a bureaucratic process to get through all that when you're
dealing with the government. Jhendel's Attorneys at Law do it
every single day. So you or someone that you know
needs help in that world. It doesn't cost you a
single penny. They will represent you. They'd love to have
the conversation with you before you start to begin the
process because that's the most efficient way to do it.
(38:13):
Doesn't cost you a penny unless they get a claim
for you. Jan Dill's Attorneys at Loss started here in
Parkersburg and now doing business in all fifty states. All right,
let's do a little basketball now. The fighting Ross Hodges
with a seventy thirty eight victory over the Mercy hearsts
a couple notes.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
We talked about how historic that defensive performance was, So
let's niche this down to a couple stats, and then
we'll talk about some individuals, because there's a bunch of
individuals performances that I thought were really good last night.
Live ball turnovers, Hopy, you hear me talking about this
a lot. I will all season with a Ross Hodge
coach team Westerton created ten of those yesterday. Out of
what tony fifteen total turnovers they had the half team fourteen,
(38:56):
so ten of the fifteen were live ball turnovers. So
that's part step one, Part A. You got to create
the live ball turnovers, hop and then when WESTERNI has
been doing that at an elite level, somewhere in the
top in the eighty fifth percentality seventh percentile nationally, the
second part of that is then you need to convert
those into buckets. That's where West Virginia had been lagging
just a tad behind compared to how many they were creating.
(39:19):
Excuse me, yesterday, turn those ten into one point seven
points per possession, which was in the eighty fifth percentile.
So you created and then turned them in and that's
really important that's a number we'll watch all season hot
because west Virni's offenses, we know is patient and can
at times end in what seems to be an ugly possession. Right,
(39:39):
So you want to find some chances to get some space,
let your guys work. You've been very good from three
in those live ball turnover situations, so keep an eye
on that. That's a stat we'll watch. But one point
seven points per possession off those that's a really high
number and part of the reason why you had no
trouble with Mercyhurst. Let's get to some individuals chance more.
Really good game last night, eleven points nine rebounds, got
(40:01):
to the basket multiple times, and I thought that was
on display. What he gives you a guy that can
get the ball and say not messing around here. I'm
not gonna try and back anybody down. I'm just driving
straight to the rim and I'm gonna hammer this. So
eleven points nine rebounds, it's top Trey Eagle staff for
a second. I know his offense isn't where some thought
it would be at this point, but we've continued to
(40:23):
say for a kid that's really trying to elevate his
entire game and working really hard on the defensive end.
Tried to put a number to that. There's some talented
statisticians out there putting numbers behind things that normally don't
have statistics to them. But let's look at Trey for
a second. First of all, a season high for him
eight rebounds yesterday nearly led the team save for chances nine,
(40:44):
but really good defensive effort, He had deflections, he was
on the glass with those eight rebounds. But he is
now in the ninety seventh percentile nationally in defensive win share.
How I used that one before. We find that that
estimates a player's contribution to wins based on their defensive
performance steals and blocks, but also accounts for contested shots
(41:04):
and forced turnovers. So he is, by those metrics in
the ninety seventh percentile for defensive win shares. How much
he contributes on the defensive end to you getting wins.
So just thought that was important to point out a
number that backs up if you've been watching the games,
what you see from Trey that he has come a
long way defensively and has been really good as a
(41:25):
defender for this Mountaineer team. Another guy, Emir Jenkins, continues
to impress the true freshman ten points, three assists, zero
turnovers in that game.
Speaker 1 (41:34):
He's now three games nine to zero.
Speaker 3 (41:36):
He had nineteen to six assists a turnover ratio on
the year, and your right tone, he hasn't turned it
over in the last three games, so he has not
had a turnover since November seventeenth of this year. Thirty
one percent assists right, so that means he assists on
thirty one percent of West Virginia's made field goals when
he's in that's in the ninety fourth percentile nationally. So
(41:57):
he's been excellent. Continues to get better. Roll that right
into your other point guard, Jasper Floyd. He's in the
hundredth one hundredth percentile nationally when it comes to defensive
win shares. Wow, okay, that's good. One hundredth percentile there.
He has a thirty percent assist orate, putting him in
the ninety third percentile. So you're getting really solid play
(42:18):
from both of your point guards Jasper and Emir so
far this season. Talk about Jackson Fields makes his Mountaineer
debut yesterday. Had nine points in his first game, three rebounds,
two of which were offensive. He had two assists in
just twelve minutes of action. So as we've been saying,
good to get another big back in their six', nine
really Athletic Jackson fields continues to Give Ross hodge some
(42:40):
more options along the front line with Now fields And
chance more back in this. Lineup that was your seventh
different leading scorer last night.
Speaker 1 (42:48):
In just eight.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
Games, Amazing Honor huff is led.
Speaker 3 (42:51):
Twice other than, that you've had a different leading scorer
in each of these games last.
Speaker 1 (42:55):
Night.
Speaker 4 (42:56):
Chance that's so encouraging because how many times in the
past where you were thin and you, said, boy If javon,
small if he's not, scoring who's going to?
Speaker 1 (43:03):
Score remember we used to say who's going to be
the third? Scorer? Yeah all the time we'd, go, okay
we know who's these two guys are going to. Score
who's gonna be the third? Score?
Speaker 3 (43:10):
Yeah so seven different leading, scores which is pretty's.
Speaker 2 (43:12):
Good so we'll see how that.
Speaker 3 (43:13):
Continues but multiple guys contributing in different, ways AND i
do think it's one of those will continue to say
this for a while work in, Progress West, virginia and
especially now as you continue to mix these guys back
in And chance is one thing because he's been practicing
and playing with you played in one of the exhibitions
and the closed. Scrimmage Jackson field is a whole different.
Deal he's been out for three months and hasn't been
(43:35):
able to practice with that that wrist.
Speaker 2 (43:37):
Injury so getting.
Speaker 3 (43:39):
Him mixed mixed back in and then everybody else learning
how to play with him is still going to take
some time and ross frankly figuring out who goes in,
win when is IT, dj whin is It, jackson when
is it chance off the, bench and how that. Works
that's going to continue to be something they work.
Speaker 2 (43:56):
Through mm.
Speaker 1 (43:57):
Hmm good. Report Coppin state is Next wednesday night Inside Hope.
Coliseum West virginia will be a heavy favorite in that,
game and Then saturday night six o'clock in The Capital
city It's West virginia and Wake. Forest very important game
for The. Mountaineers they've had their two opportunities Against clemson
And xavier as far as high level. Competition they got
(44:19):
the win Over pit, obviously but to get A Wake
forest it would be very nice on your. Resume and
then the following week to get In Ohio, state which is,
doable which is doable if you go up there and play.
Well so the very very important couple of weeks coming
up here.
Speaker 3 (44:35):
This Wake forest, team and we'll preview them more coming
up On thursday's. Episode but just two losses on the,
season one point to a top Five michigan team and
by one point To Texas.
Speaker 2 (44:45):
Tech very.
Speaker 3 (44:45):
Impressed it's a very impressive start For Steve forbes and
Wake forest quite frankly better THAN i think a lot
of people thought they would be early in this. Season
so an important game listed is a semi home. Game
there saw That Ken palm has a semi. Home that's
how they chart. Those hopefully that it turns into no
semi about that that The Charleston coliseum is packed and
(45:06):
loud and affects that.
Speaker 4 (45:07):
Game how badly do you, need given the difficulty of
the conference, schedule how badly do you need notable non conference?

Speaker 2 (49:13):
It, yeah.
Speaker 1 (49:16):
This, here what can we? Get that's my? Bad, yeah
so that right, There i'm. Getting so what this is,
is this is like twenty four by. Seventeen this is hand.
Made it is marble, plaster obviously the state Of West.
(49:37):
Virginia it's got this really neat look because it looks
like it's a coal wall right with the state Of
West virginia in. It and the frame here Is caribbean handmade,
Frame caribbean. Walnut and this item will be available on
the website shortly within the next couple of, days so
(50:00):
you can take a look at. It they'll have more
pictures of it. There but each of these are, handmade super,
neat and it would look good and wherever you want
to boast your mountaineer, pride really, Neat, yeah you neat,
unique a little bit different than coffee and.
Speaker 4 (50:16):
Popcorn plus that would be when you have your, Room
tony with all Your West virginia, stuff that's going to
stand out people walk into. It, hey give, me what's
the story behind?
Speaker 1 (50:27):

yeah my son makes. Those, Yes, Matthew now That's junior's,
brother very. Talented, yeah That's. Junior That's junior's. Brother junior
does the broadcasting And Big matt.
Speaker 2 (50:45):
Just makes, it just makes.
Speaker 1 (50:46):
Stuff he's kind of a.
Speaker 2 (50:47):
Renaissance you never, know you never know what's going to
come up dining room. Table he's got.
Speaker 4 (50:51):
You or it's just like you want to break down
a scene in a, movie you can do.
Speaker 2 (50:54):
That you can do that in a, wall he can
do that.
Speaker 1 (50:58):
WALL a lot of things going on upstairs. There, yeah so,
anyway that'll be available on our. Website beam in the.
Speaker 2 (51:05):
Office he got.
Speaker 4 (51:06):
That are you're saying he's hearing different.
Speaker 1 (51:07):
Voices, no he's just, like, yeah he's in his own
band and he marches to. It so, anyway those are really,
Neat they really are. Neat it is. Nice all, right
here we. Go, hey three guys love the. Show, Thankfully
football's come to an. END a technical technique question unanswered all.
Season Are West virginia's defensive backs ever taught to play the?
Ball how many times have we seen them plastered all
(51:29):
over the receiver without turning to see that the ball's
right there for the taking one of two things HAPPENS
pi pass interference or a completion is a lack of, talent,
coaching flaw or both doctor ed In North. CAROLINA i
take a crack at.
Speaker 4 (51:44):
That, sure when you're running full speed and trying to
keep up with somebody who's maybe running just slightly faster than,
you it is really hard to turn your head. AROUND i,
mean that's that's what you're taught to, do, Right you
turn your head around and you get your arm up
first of. All, second Old Steve dunlapp will tell, you
if you think the guy's gonna catch the ball and
(52:05):
have a big, gain take a.
Speaker 1 (52:07):
Chance you, know you.
Speaker 4 (52:09):
Better off with a fifteen yard penalty than a fifty
yard gain or a. Touchdown so sometimes those interference Plays
tony are. Intentional sometimes they're, not, Obviously but THAT'S i
think that's harder than it.
Speaker 1 (52:21):
LOOKS i would say, this As rich, said he's gonna
review every single nook and cranny of what's going. ON
i don't think they Keep i'm sure that somewhere they
keep this. STET i would love to know among the
sixteen schools Where West virginia finished and pass interference calls
got a, LOT a lot a, lot and let's face,
(52:44):
it something that comes down just basic foot speed and
if you're, traveling you're reaching and that's just one of those.
Deals BUT i thought the you, know a ton of
pass interference during the course of the, season.
Speaker 4 (52:57):
And there's so MANY i watched a lot of games
over the weekend and it's so SUBJECT i, Mean i'm
sure that there's, criteria but it still ends up being
a subjective call many.
Speaker 2 (53:06):
Times oh, yeah a lot of stuff that goes.
Speaker 1 (53:08):
On, again they don't even get don't Get brad started
on that Big rob From montgomery. HERE i should have
went deer hunting instead of tuning. In they were just.
Outmatched Texas tech is. Good look forward to your next.
Speaker 2 (53:19):
Episode, yeah they weren't. GOOD i don't know that he
wanted you to read.
Speaker 1 (53:24):
THAT i don't, care DOCTOR. M you send it. Here
it's getting, read DOCTOR. M From, morgantown, right you don't
have to read my last? Text WELL i, did, no, no,
no this is it was? It that was not? It
it was.
Speaker 4 (53:37):
One don't send a.
Speaker 1 (53:38):
Text there's one that didn't get used. Anyway traveled From
morgantown To Los angeles for The Lakers clippers game Last,
Tuesday No West virginia, connections but my fiance asked why
we couldn't stay the whole, week to WHICH i, REPLIED
Wvu Texas Tech saturday and all though the game did
not go as we had, HOPED i would not rather
be anywhere else Than section one six per game.
Speaker 2 (54:00):
Days let's go out in, here so Loyal. Finn, yeah
hold on one.
Speaker 3 (54:04):
Second what texters, said No West virginia connections at The
Clippers lakers?
Speaker 2 (54:08):
Game what do we always? Say always?
Speaker 3 (54:12):
Connection Chris, Cunanan assistant director Of Game, Entertainment West virginia,
guy there you go for The.
Speaker 2 (54:17):
Lakers well, Done thank, You.
Speaker 1 (54:22):
Hoppy AND i came across a Bizarre West virginia connection
story when we were In, Charleston South, carolina last, week
when we were walking Through saturday, night that open marketplace
and the playing the. Guitar oh, geez give give that.
Story so you and if we haven't told you, This,
brad listen to this.
Speaker 4 (54:40):
One, yeah you And joan AND i are walking through
this Market saturday, night just finished, dinner Which tony. Bought
by the, way it was very nice. Gesture and there's
a guy.
Speaker 2 (54:52):
Playing generous when it comes to.
Speaker 4 (54:54):
Food he's very, generous a very nice, gesture and there's
a guy playing the, guitar and somehow we struck.
Speaker 1 (55:01):
He saw he saw The West. Virginia, oh he saw
The West.
Speaker 4 (55:03):
Virginia. Yeah so, now of, course so we start a.
Conversation so he's he's From West.
Speaker 1 (55:08):
Virginia beckley In Mingo, County beckley And.
Speaker 4 (55:12):
Mingo but then pick up the stories there BECAUSE i
DON'T i don't se have the story exactly.
Speaker 1 (55:15):
Right so he, goes, yeah so Like i'm From beckley
And i've got you, Know Mingo county as, Well and he,
says do you know do you know The white, Family
Jesco white and the whole. Thing and he had a
family member that was involved in a situation there AND i,
said he, goes, yeah look it, up it's it's right.
(55:35):
There and then he, Said i'm just happy That i'm.
Alive so we, go, like what's? Up he, SAID i
was IN i believe it Was. NASHVILLE i think, so,
yeah AND i was driving uber Or lyft and an
eighteen year old kid got in my car and as
part of a gang, initiation put a gun behind my
(55:56):
head and shot through his. Head and he look and
he took. It, yeah and there was a major hole
here and another hole right, there and he, SAID i
was left for. DEAD i crawled on the. Ground someone
came and saw, it saved. Me they arrested the kid
and he only got like fifteen or twenty years in.
(56:18):
Prison and he goes, like so every Day i'm here
to play BECAUSE i just made a, commitment you, know
at that moment WHEN i THOUGHT i was, dead that,
like if you keep me, Alive i'll you, know every.
Speaker 4 (56:31):
Day and we went, like Thank, god Praise, god keep me.
Speaker 2 (56:34):
Alive.
Speaker 1 (56:35):
Yeah, whoa there's Your West virginia. Connection just walking by
a guy that's a. Whole, yeah that was. Unexpected, Yeah
god was good, Too, Yeah, TEXTER i keep hearing WHEN
wvu has resources to, win but the losses. Continue looking
forward to year eight of being, patient another eighty new
(56:56):
players coming. In we will will we ever compete for a? Conference?
Again sorry for the negative. Posts i'm tired of. Losses here's.
ZERO i don't think you'll get eighty new. ONES i
think you'll probably be. Fifty, brad do you think it's
fair forty five? Fifty?
Speaker 2 (57:13):
YEAH i, think, yeah forty.
Speaker 1 (57:16):
Five to fifty at least you'll have a little bit
of a base this year that you can build. Upon
but this IS i, MEAN i can't overstate how important this.
Is you've got to get like really good, players like right, now,
yes or.
Speaker 4 (57:30):
Else but he also, said he, said some things you
can fix right, away, understood and some things are going
to take a. While to me in this day and,
age a while is three.
Speaker 1 (57:40):
Years, well here's WHAT i. Think here's WHAT i. Think
will the offensive line be better.
Speaker 2 (57:47):
Next, Year, yes that's step.
Speaker 1 (57:49):
One. Yeah will the linebackers be faster next? Year? Yes
will you have more wide, receivers better wide, Receivers? YEAH
i think across the board you'll be. Better you'll be.
Better but what does that translate, to, right what does
(58:12):
that translate? To nothing is, Guaranteed and it's not until
you get all conference. Players it's not until you get
guys that are at least going to get a tryout
in THE, nfl for real tryout for THE, nfl that
you'll be up to the level of where you need to.
Speaker 3 (58:27):
Be plain and simple evaluations just, critical isn't. It we
keep talking About Texas tech and all the money they,
spent which is a big part of.
Speaker 2 (58:35):
IT i get.
Speaker 3 (58:36):
It but they also evaluated really. WELL i think if
you look at, this it's a couple of. Things if
you want to go back to the hope part of,
this we've seen rich enough body of work you feel
like that will get. Turned so get that offensive line,
fixed then the skill guys are going to follow that
offense will will get. Going, Defensively i'm with, You. TONY
i think there'll be some upgrades at some, positions probably
(58:58):
at all three. Levels but if you look at this season,
wise AND i know there were some moments where it
looked really, bad but, overall did you see where this
defense landed in some, categories especially against the? Run how
about this sixteenth nationally an opponent's success rate against.
Speaker 1 (59:13):
The, run.
Speaker 3 (59:15):
Sixteenth IN epa per game against the, run twenty first
IN epa per play against the. RUN i mean there
was some moments, defensively even in year, one where you're
not close to where you're going to be player wise
and understanding the scheme, wise there were some things to
hang your hat on.
Speaker 1 (59:31):
Defensively there it's the classic, case not as, bad not as,
good somewhere in the. Middle somewhere in the.
Speaker 4 (59:36):
MIDDLE i Wish Jeff limer had another YEAR i did.
Speaker 2 (59:40):
Too he gave a really good interview after the.
Speaker 4 (59:41):
Game he gave fantastic interview after the.
Speaker 2 (59:44):
Game good, insight great.
Speaker 4 (59:46):
Insight and he came from What idaho? State so go
Find Jeff, limers, RIGHT i, mean you Found Jeff, limer
who became as the season went, on became a significant.
Contributor he was the guy On. Saturday go Find Jeff.
Speaker 1 (01:00:00):
Wimers he made an immediate presence BECAUSE i remember back
in the summer when he got, here those guys on staff, said,
like we've never had a kid work as hard as. Him,
unfortunately he got. Eligible he was one of the four
that needed to go to, court got, eligible and he
was really the most. Productive yes of that.
Speaker 4 (01:00:17):
Group tony in that interview and somebody asked him ABOUT
i was a program question or something or what do
you think That rich rod would get it? Done he said,
absolutely and again a very articulate. Guy and he, said
because with Rich, rodriguez it is twenty four to. Seven
it is constantly the pursuit of. Excellence there's not a day,
(01:00:38):
off there's not an hour. Off it's always about, pushing, pushing,
Pushing And weymer, SAID i, responded to. That that helped
me be a better. Player not everybody will because people
get worn. Down but when you find the players that
respond to, that you can achieve things that maybe those
players didn't think they could personally.
Speaker 1 (01:00:58):
Achieve that's what he. Said he said his goal is
to give to make you the best version of. Yourself
whether you know you have it in you or, not
he'll get it out of. You so that's what he.
Does he's done that three guys and expected end to
a remarkable. Season remarkable in the trials and tribulations of this,
TEAM i projected a five maybe six win team before
the injury. Onslaught while there are no moral, victories to
(01:01:19):
say it's a shocking what this team has achieved would
be an. Understatement on a more serious, NOTE i want
to express my amazement at the kindness of our Opposing
big twelve fan. Bases recent, Years i've attended A big
twelve men's basketball tournament game Against, kansas two away football
games AT ku in a road contest At Oklahoma, state
nothing but great treatment each. Time and then to see
(01:01:42):
how The Texas tech fan base stepped up to donate
to The Mountaineer Food bank in honor of the Fallen
West Virginia National guard. Members what a class. Move despite
the non traditional opponents and ridiculous, travel the opposing fan
base is are truly. Fantastic in my, Book onward And
upward to twenty, six Let Rich Rod cook with a
full recruiting cycle will be. Fine Sign glenn From, Glenn,
(01:02:03):
Ferris michael And. Clodin today is the end of a new.
Beginning my expectations are incremental improvements next. Year six to
eight wins and being competitive every week would be acceptable
for year two or one if we're giving a year
zero since he got here late last, Year, TEXTER i
(01:02:23):
know everyone said next year will be better now That
rich had a year to. Recruit if he only takes
fifteen or so, transfers will the problem be that we're
too young next? Year, well, no they are going to
try to build this thing with high SCHOOL i mean
he has said that. Repeatedly they don't think the future
(01:02:45):
is just getting older guys and putting them. Together he's
got to build a base and that's what they're going to.
Speaker 4 (01:02:50):
DO i think the, BIGGEST i think the giant question
is Will Scotty fox be the quarterback next?
Speaker 1 (01:02:57):
YEAR TBA i know it.
Speaker 4 (01:02:59):
Is i'm saying that that's that's a question THAT i
that will be all off.
Speaker 2 (01:03:02):
Season, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:03:05):
This ONE i didn't agree. With the person SAID I
i didn't expect a winning season this, year but we
never seemed to get. Better, SEE i. WOULDN'T i wouldn't
agree with you. THERE i think this team did get.
Better although the last game will be the impactful memory
that you, have this team did get better as the
season went, on won a couple of games, late and you, know,
yeah you Had Arizona state right there for the. Taking
(01:03:28):
and so, NO i disagree with with that.
Speaker 2 (01:03:31):
ONE i, Think, YEAH i.
Speaker 3 (01:03:32):
DON'T i don't know that that's even, debatable especially if
you if you could just take it on its face,
value it got. Better but if you graded on the
curve with you when you're going with your fifth with
the guy that was fifth on your depth chart at
quarterback and your eighth running, back THAT'S i know we've
said that a. BUNCH i don't know that we've said that.
Enough and again for a team that didn't have a
big margin for AYER. I it might have been a
(01:03:52):
tough season anyway had everybody stayed, healthy but the fact
you were down to that number quarterback and that number
running back at key positions In rich's.
Speaker 2 (01:03:59):
Offense that really is.
Speaker 3 (01:04:00):
Remarkable, no you're, right as the texta, earlier Said.
Speaker 1 (01:04:03):
Textter, brad who ranked in last place according TO pff
this season among interior offensive. LINEMEN i know you.
Speaker 2 (01:04:10):
Shot away from. THAT i, No, no that will go.
Speaker 1 (01:04:12):
There WHEN i pasted that one in, THERE i, went
he's not going to answer. That three guys before the
game brought to's By Gomart Marty's Mary. Spin huh. Huh
walk into The. Gomart did you get the triple Points? Saturday?
No no sc.
Speaker 3 (01:04:28):
Off because of our trip threw off my gas, consumption
which MEANS i didn't need It. Saturday some st streak.
Speaker 1 (01:04:35):
Ended here's what you need to.
Speaker 2 (01:04:36):
Do take it back on.
Speaker 1 (01:04:37):
It take Your gomart. App walk into a Go mart
anytime day or, night seven days a. Week they're always.
There hit THE qr code inside the, store and you
can Spin Marty's Mary. Spin this holiday, season have the
opportunity to win all kinds of. Prizes great time of,
year you KNOW i like doing this time, Yere i'll
go into A. Gomart i'll buy some windshiel WHILE i
wash your Fluid i'll buy fifteen twenty gallons just to have.
(01:04:59):
It you never and know when you're gonna run. Out
it's a bad day when you need that. Fluid you
know those days when you're driving down the interstate and
you're and it goes in the and you're, done and
then it's all, dry and it's like dirt dry you
got and you go outside and you get. Without that's
WHY i keep fifteen to twenty gallons of. Win she'll
wash your.
Speaker 3 (01:05:18):
Field tick, approximately you were snickering at. ME i know
you know me well enough to know it bummed me
out THAT i had to break the. STREET i was
at our event On saturday In South.
Speaker 2 (01:05:27):
Carolina you're supposed to ride a heater.
Speaker 1 (01:05:30):
Text her. Guys on the bright, side.
Speaker 3 (01:05:33):
Did stop in and get some doughnuts the other, day
THOUGH i hadn't had something a. While on the bright,
side and the end cap there got my reward points.
Speaker 1 (01:05:47):
Going we'll just go.
Speaker 2 (01:05:50):
Ahead it's.
Speaker 1 (01:05:51):
Okay on the bright, side it was my seven year
old's first game and we're had a bless AND i
absolutely believe Rich rod knows what the hell he's. Doing
he'll fix. It on the, DOWNSIDE i get that it's
deer season and this one's always sparsely. Attended but, man
that was the kind of crowd that we would be
(01:06:13):
Trolling pitt for having, pathetic especially for what turned out
to be a beautiful day for. FOOTBALL i Know Rich
rob will do his. Job our fans need to do.
Theirs and There's matt And tulsa with his young one
there taking in his first. Game here we.
Speaker 2 (01:06:25):
Go, yeah look at that very Good.
Speaker 1 (01:06:30):
Texter brent From. Beckley, well that basketball performance sure helped
ease the pain From saturday a. Bit that was the
first time seeing this team in. PERSON i gotta SAY
i Enjoyed Ross hodge, coach from the pregame warmups to
his sideline. DEMEANOR i think that we've got a good.
One looking forward to see what this team can do
in conference. Play Signed brent From Beckley. Texter, hello three.
(01:06:56):
Guys my oldest son AND i attended the Game, saturday
his first To Mountaineer. Field after we witnessed history for
the wrong. REASONS i have to say that was the
most Embarrassing West virginia Game i've ever. Attended not much
effort at. ALL i did have one question THAT i
hope you blockheads can answer for my son and. Eyes
here's a heater When Scotty fox threw the. Pick was
that the quarterback's fault of the receiver's. Fault couldn't tell
(01:07:18):
if the receiver was supposed to do a curl or
just straight. Out at least the basketball team is doing
better at efforting right. Now thanks for all you do
to keep up the good. Work Hot rod In, Woodbridge.
VIRGINIA i would, say obviously just a massive communication error
there as they say they were not on the same. Page,
no they were not on the same. Page was that
(01:07:38):
the Like vaughn, Went, oh that? Was, no that was
that was the one going toward the weight, room the
one That Cam vaughan stopped. On and this was the
one he was referring to the. Hospital that quick little
throw of The West virginia sideline just jumped. Around, hey three.
Guys jake From Preston county currently living In West.
Speaker 2 (01:07:57):
Texas it's a broad.
Speaker 1 (01:07:59):
