Speaker 1 (00:09):
Welcome one and all the music has begun, and that
means it's time for Three Guys Before the Game. This
is episode number six hundred and seventy eight. It is
a preview edition of West Virginia's final regular season football
game against the Red Raiders of Texas Tech and look Ahead.
This coming Sunday, the Mountaineer basketball team returns to action
(00:32):
after having a week off. They will take on Mercyhurst
and oh Mercy. Look, we've got all three of the
guys in now. We're starting to stack shows together. Yeah,
you guys notice that.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
On a roll, a bunch of them lately.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
What do you mean by it?
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Just like it feels like every thirty six hours we're
popping a show.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
I mean, people want people want stuff, People want stuff.
Busy time it is, but it's gonna get quieter, sort
of different, quiet coming up. We'll get it to that.
Three Guys Before the Game is brought to us by
Comac's Business Systems, keeping West Virginia's business data safe, secure
and efficient for twenty five years. It's brought to us
(01:13):
by Gomart. Get yourself that Gomart app immediately begins saving
on food and fuel. Go to Gomart dot com for details.
Big Candies out now that Halloween's over. Now, Big Christmas
moving in. Oh yeah to Gomart's. Three Guys brought to
us by Lou Wendell Marine Sales in Saint Albans. They
sell family fun and the only designated Honda Dealer marine
(01:38):
top shelf in the state. Honda just ain't throwing those
franchises around. Man, you gotta be good. You got to
stand the test of time forty years. Three guys brought
to us by Tutor's Biscuit World Start your Day the
home made way with a Tutor's Biscuit and by Jandel's
Attorneys at Law. They will not take no for an answer. No, no, no,
(02:00):
and spreads on stats coming up. Brought to us by
Conley's CPA Group, providing value beyond numbers. All right, let's
do this thing. I'm a guessing. I'm a guessing that
there's gonna be some people driving Thanksgiving travel while they're
listening to this episode of the show.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Probably starts this afternoon. I'm probably now listening to his live.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Oh, here we go. Here's the deal, folks. If in
all we were gonna come, we're gonna come to you.
In total honesty today hoppy, I'd say he's going about
sixty percent. Maybe the senator without medications probably operating at
about sixty five, but with with medication he improves about
(02:47):
ninety ninety five.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Give me the ball.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
We're fine, which means that I'm only due. I mean,
it's only a matter of time, just kind of.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
I took the COVID test.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
And you were good.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
He brought it, brought it. We believe you.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
You told us twice before we started recording that you
were negative, and then you'll bring the thing with you.
So there it is. Kerchival either doesn't have COVID or
he's pregnant, one of the one of the two.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
There's probably that damn monkey he had on his head.
Gig e exactly exactly, I mean signed until the monkey
came along.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
You sound terrible.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Either that or I or I gave the monkey something.
Maybe monkey box ojebox is a thing.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
By the way, what does that mean.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
It's a thing. I'm not sure what it is.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
But oh monkey, pock monkey posh, I fuck you met monkey.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
But I think the monkey pox is only sexually transmitted.
So nothing like that happened over.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
There for a little bit more than we needed to know.
Now we move on to further we get into Texas Tech,
and now I got little kids listening while they're driving
the Grandma's for Thanksgiving and they're asking, Mom, what's monkey sex?
I mean, we don't need that.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Sorry, just trying to bring it all together.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Kergieval's loaded it. Here we go on Saturday afternoon high noon.
West Virginia will close out the regular season in football
the end of season one four the Mountaineers and V
two of Rich Rodriguez. And let's be honest, you couldn't
have picked a worst opponent, right, I mean, you got
a team that's number five in the nation with a
single loss. They have to continue to win to keep
(04:14):
in front of them all of their goals Big twelve
championship and obviously the best spot they can get in
the upcoming college football playoffs, so they have reason to play. Meanwhile,
let's face it, West Virginia, no ballgame. You're not going
to get a ball game, win or lose. So that
makes it extremely difficult, Like you can't pick a worst
(04:37):
case scenario than this one. However, that is the job,
that is the mission of this coaching staff and for
the players to try to go out there and absolutely
give it one last great effort and then you just
kind of see where you are. Why'd you give me
(04:59):
the head week.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Well, that's one gonna be one of my obvious observations.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
And bye, stand by, stand by my thoughts.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
That sound brand new, but the things we already knew
gotta bomb ready.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Heaven knows, I take it quick.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
And you'll start coughing toovation. There he is, Ladies and gentlemen,
Hoppy curgilal. You know what else we need for that song?
We need a graphic. We need a cartoon animated graphic.
Uh so someone created that song for us. His name
is Gary Mertens. So anyone out there that wants to
(05:38):
do an AI do an AI graphic of Hoppy that
says Hoppy's obvious observations. We'll put that up on our
TV feed of video feed of this program. I'd like that,
just to send it to the text line, thank you
got it.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
So, as you mentioned, Brad, don't like the situation, don't
like anything about the situation. Text on the verge of
playing in the Big twelve Championship game. And I think
correct me if I'm wrong. I think if Arizona State
loses to Arizona Tech is in. I believe that is.
But if Arizona State beats Arizona, then Texas Tech needs
(06:14):
to win. I think I'm right about that. Anybody have
any confirmation on that.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
I saw the scenarios earlier today. I'm going to effort
here to find those and then I'll get back to you.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Okay, But I think that's what it is. So Brad,
Texas Tech has motivation in this game. Number One, the
week off and both teams had a week off, and
the week off probably helped Texas Tech more than West
Virginia because the week off for West Virginia is like,
why why do we have this week off? Now? It's
bad time. For Texas Tech, they needed it because they're
(06:45):
banged up and Baron Morton was banged up, so he's
had another week to get to get better. So West
Virginia coming off of loss, and this question who wanted
to spend another two weeks practicing after a long season
and who wants to be there? Who wants to be there?
Starting now you're you're essentially a professional athlete. You would
(07:05):
think you'll get a great effort. And en Rich Rodriguez
and his staff did a great job, Brad of when
they were really slumping in the middle of season of
getting them to play hard. They so, can you get
one more game out of these guys? It's going to
be hard, crowd's gonna be down, holiday weekend, students are out,
rain should be gone, it's going to be cold. And
(07:27):
again encourage that WV has been playing hard every game
since the mid season slump. But they can they muster
And I have another point, but Brad, can they muster
the kind of energy one more game against a really,
really good team?
Speaker 1 (07:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (07:38):
I think that's the thing. I mean, you're you're right
in all the situational parts of this. It's a it's
a difficult matchup. It's the most difficult part of the
matchup is the other team is really good. Yeah, we're
gonna get into some of this, but Tech is I
give them a lot of credit. They've done a tremendous job.
It's not just the money spent. They went out and
got guys. I mean they're they're really good and have
flipped their identity guys. I don't want to get into this,
(07:58):
but normally you come in here about the Texas Tech
offense and the defense has been non existent for a
decade and a half. It's completely flipped in this case.
Their offense has been okay, not elite, their defense has
been just absolute lights out.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Yeah. So one other point, the most significant individual associated
with Texas Tech sports will not be in uniform Saturday,
will not be coaching in a game Saturday. Probably will
be here and you know, watching the game. But it's
Cody Campbell. Cody Campbell is a Texas Tech colum. He
(08:31):
was a four year starter on the offensive line from
two thousand and one to two thousand and four, one
year in the NFL, and he put his master's degree
to finance to work and he made money. He was
very successful in the oil and gas business. Understatement, Yeah
successful segment. Yeah. So he's built and sold a couple
of companies. I mean he's a billionaire. He's a legitimate billionaire.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
Yeah, Okay, well you mean there's some illegitimate billionaires wandering
around the streets.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
I'm just saying that he's got You can be you
can be maybe a billionaire if it's just all in assets,
but you got a bunch of bills to pay or whatever.
But I mean he I think he's.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Got cash got he got cash. He got cash, he
got cash.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
And his wealth has given him power and influence of
the Texas Tech program. He was appointed to the Board
of Governors in two thousand and twenty one and then
elected Chairman of the Board of Governors, and he has
put forth millions to the NIL program at Texas Tech.
Texas Tech spent the second most NIL money of any
(09:34):
school for this season, second only to Ohio State in football,
something like twenty eight million, whor it's believed that they spent,
which is we don't have exact numbers. That's probably almost
close to closer to three than two three times what
West Virginia spent, very close to that. Baron Morton received
(09:54):
an estimated one million as a quarterback in basketball. Brad
JT Topping, how'd he do well? Chris Anderson? Yeah, I
mean Topping like, I can't go to the NBA. I
can make more money at Texas.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Ten second, he's a second round possibility.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Significantly more money, four mill four mills. What he got
na Jerry Najari Najari Kennedy softball player best softball player
in the country, played at Stanford. She did a seven figure.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
Deal one million American.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
Is that what it went to play for the softball
to let.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
Them led him to the World Championship Series.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
So now all this was done, this was I think
is interesting all this was done before July one, because
the July one things changed for two reasons. One is
now supposedly everybody's going to be equal with the with
the revenue sharing of about twenty twenty one million dollars.
And then second of all, if you do nil, it's
supposed to pass muster and say him cutting a commercial
(10:54):
is not worth a megion dollars now? So will that
hold up? And will will Texas Tech next year be
able to do the same kinds of things this year
or Tony Will Will Dulote I think is moniforing it,
Will dut step up and say no, you can't, this
is out of whack right, And I don't know what's
(11:16):
going to happen there.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
Well, it's really super interesting because while Cody Campbell has
you know, been the catalyst for their expenditures in getting
these athletes, he also realizes and has publicly come out
on multiple occasions saying like this is not sustainable going forward.
And he had a television commercial that aired several weeks back,
(11:40):
and some of the networks wouldn't even run it because
basically he was trying to say, hey, Conference commissioners, you
guys are all on the take. It's all being run
by television. We need to change it. So it's a
great paradox from yeah, he's funding it, but he's going like,
I don't want to keep doing this. Let's get some
stability to this thing. That's what's really interesting. It's testing,
it's estimately. Yeah, I think you're right, Tony.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
They also made some news this week too because they
came out and said they're not signing the end the
agreement that everybody else is supposed to sign to play.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
By the rules.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
Correct, They just signed upsettles that right.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
Yeah, so what's going to happen there? Yeah, So supposedly
Texas Tech athletes across the board are earning some fifty
five million dollars this year, and what we talk about
all the time, we can say, wait a minute, going
next year, that's not that's not the rules, right, They
(12:30):
might say, I got your rules right here, that's where
it's going. So I just think that Texas Tech is
that's a real significant program in this new world that
sets an maybe sets an example of what you should do,
or they're gonna get or they're gonna get busted.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
Or wow, they're not getting busted.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
By the way, it helps. Here's the other thing. Helps
to have billionaires.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
Yeah a billionaires. Billionaires are pretty good. Yeah, billionaires. It's
one of these weird deals that if you're Texas Tech
and you're a Texas Tech fan, like you're loving this, like, hey,
we have struggled through the years. We have not won
the league championship. We've struggled, and so like if it's
you that are doing it, like you're high five in yourself,
(13:20):
you're just going. But on the outside, we kind of
sit here and everyone else kind of sits here and
they look at them and go like, like you, that's
not fair. But if it was you, if it was
West Virginia and West Virginia had like four or five
billionaires lined up, I mean we were going like suck.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
Man, why don't care? What's fair? Would not go and
you know Rich and just whip your a.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Yeah, And like Rich Rodriguez, like I asked him about
it this week, Like he doesn't whine about it. He
like he commends them. He said like, hey man, that's
awesome they can do that. I wish we could do that.
I wish every you know, I'd like to do it.
I'm not running away from that.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
But it if if Texas Tech and schools like that
can continue to do that n I L and not
get called on it or not get you know, toned
down so you're paying too much, then you can't compete.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
But what's what's interesting though, is so Texas Tech's become
the poster child for it this year. They just got
into this game. There's some others. Why aren't we directing
this at Ohio State, Ohio State out there doing you
know why? Is Texas Tech the one that everybody says, well,
Texas tex doing Oh what's Ohio State.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
Been doing for Tech?
Speaker 1 (14:26):
Because Texas? Because Texas Tech hasn't.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
I know why.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
I think that's absolutely outrageous. Go after the freaking Texas
Longhorns or Ohio State out there dropping forty million or
whatever the hell they did. Yeah, no, far be it
for me to defend Texas Tech. But with all due respect,
should be other school's taking eat.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
But what a what a fascinating story about Cody Campbell? No, God,
I just head tremendous success, and there's he's in Well,
like you said, Tony, I watched that commercial.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
And he's gone to Congress and multiple times he's kind
of saying, hey, we need help here. We need a
gover namental rule that will put some some template down
so that this thing can become more even.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
Well, he's also big on the consolidating the media rights, yes,
which is an interesting take that'll that'll be tough to
get traction because the Big ten and the SEC will
balk at that all the way along the line. But
it's an interesting discussion. The other leagues, right NBA, all
the leagues consolidate their rights and it's better for everybody.
I mean, makes a point there.
Speaker 1 (15:23):
Now, didn't former WV president Gordon Gee did he have
won out this week? Opined on that he did come out,
and so he did come out and he wrote a
he wrote an op ed piece that basically said the
same thing. Put everything together, then go to the market
and say what's it worth? And the estimate is, you know,
hundreds of millions of dollars more could be generated if
(15:46):
all of the leagues came together and cut one TV deal.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
But unfortunately you have the power of the sec in
the Big ten, saying right, we're good.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
Correct, Yeah, that's what I got? Well, you mean is
that it?
Speaker 2 (15:59):
Yeah? Is that? Okay? That was something.
Speaker 4 (16:06):
Thoughts from Hobby's point of view. Segment has been brought
to us. Five list sticks, the bomb in the blue Candy.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
Yeah, here we go, smooth t that's the plan.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
You're holding noney, you got honey, it looks.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
Like my man's packing.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
Yeah, he's got the bliss sticks, so don't worry about that.
Keep it going. Three guys before the game is brought
to us by our good friends at gomart'tis the season

(17:28):
Go to tutors and they will take care of your
every need when it comes to an event. Hobby the Yeah,
some of the things you said weren't obvious. Really, yeah,
a couple of things. What do you think, Brud I
thought he went over it in pretty deep. He went
pretty deep. Let's stay with Let's let's try to keep
your stuff obvious. Let's let's let's follow the task copy.
(17:52):
I don't I don't know exactly why you needed to.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
Well some of the I mean some of the stuff
I don't want to get up in brand stuff either.
Speaker 1 (17:59):
Well, you tried in the past and that did not
go win. Let's do spreads on stats and breaking down
some numbers. You know what they're gonna tell us Texas
Tech is like, really good?
Speaker 2 (18:11):
Can he find can Brad find an avenue? Can he
find an avenue?
Speaker 1 (18:17):
Yeah? Probably food poisoning, COVID breakout. Honestly, I like the scenario.
Take a freaking swing. That's what sports are made about. Man, Hey,
wasn't it that all that long ago that a West
Virginia women's basketball team went out with five players travelling
at halftime?
Speaker 2 (18:36):
No, that can't happen. You can't win a game.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
Against the nationally rated team. Didn't that just happen?
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Huh Green, that's right?
Speaker 1 (18:44):
So yeah, man, you take your swing. That's sports. Any
anything can happen. Anything can happen. That's why we keep watching.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
Spreads on Stats brought to us by Conley CPA Group,
full service public accounting, and we strongly advocate for them
if you need business help, great guidance. They've been at
it for forty years. Based right here in the state
of West Virginia, clients around the state and outside of
the state. Conley's CPA Group provides us Spreads on Stats.
Speaker 3 (19:13):
Listen, you don't have to reiterate to this fan base
that anything can happen based on what happened final week
of the regular season.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Yeah, decade and a half ago.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
Anything can happen, solid point line up. Yeah, they come
in here, look past you. They're flat.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
They don't want to be here.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
They think they've got to win a couple turnovers. They're
in some trouble.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
Mm hmm. Curtis Jones running for one hundred and ninety five,
four scores.
Speaker 3 (19:39):
Eighteen carries, one to ninety five. Curtis Jones Heisman campaign
continues in earnest.
Speaker 1 (19:46):
You know, Rich is talking more and more about two
way players starting next year, really because they will go
down to one hundred and five players. And he said,
I'm looking at guys now, like linebackers that can be
full back, and the Curtis Joneses of the world, they're
they're they're looking at that.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
He's looked good running the ball. That I mean that
I don't know why he wouldn't play both ways.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
Yeah, but do you think so, I asked him, he
thinks Curtis going forward will play more defense than offense. Sure,
you're gonna get bigger backs, sure, but he's been effective.
Do you or Harbard out which now, I mean, what
do we do?
Speaker 2 (20:22):
It is? It is remarkable.
Speaker 3 (20:23):
I know we've said that every week of this year,
but we'll look back and that will be the story
of this season. The injury situation is just remarkable. Guys,
we're down a Sincere Bowers and a linebacker as your
backup running back.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
Yeah, I'm gonna go find you. Go ahead and do
your thing. I'm gonna go find my first football chart
of the season this year and look at the look
at the depth. We'll start counting players.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
Out here on quarterback, four and running back. I think
five some guys won't even be on your chart. Let's
let's talk about this Texas Tech defense, because I think
that's the pretty remarkable story of this As I mentioned earlier,
the first part of that story, hopy, is just that
it's Texas Tech has a defense, let alone maybe a
generationally good defense, and that's how they've been winning games.
(21:10):
It has not been the offense driving them. Pro Football
Focus charts five different defensive categories. Texas Tech is number
one in the Big twelve in each of those categories.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
So again, lost the ball.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
PFF charts five different defensive categories. Tech is number one
in the Big twelve in each of those categories. Now
listen to this buckle in here because I'm gonna read
off some numbers, but this was pretty amazing. Texas Tech
Defense is number one nationally in opponent available yards. I've
used that a bunch this year. They give up only
twenty eight percent of the available yards to the opposing
(21:43):
offense that you can stop right there. That's an unbelievable number.
So teams are having trouble moving the ball against them
at all. Number two nationally and early down EPA per
play number four nationally in EPA per rush, number six
nationally in EPA per pass, So teams have struggled to
run and they've struggled to pass.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
That's a problem, not a good combination.
Speaker 3 (22:06):
Number twenty three nationally in third down success, number thirty
nationally in average third down distance they're holding. So look
at what I just said there, struggle in early down
EPA and then because you're struggling early downs puts you
behind the sticks. That's seven point four yards to go.
Therefore your top twenty five in third down conversion rate
(22:27):
for your opponent. It is all. It's just amazing. So
what I mean categories, they just give you one, two, three,
six categories where your top thirty nationally defensively. So the biggest,
the biggest question, or the starting point question if you
have any chance to be in this game, is because
West Virginia's ability to hold up front offensive line against
their defensive line. That's the massive challenge, and that could
(22:49):
have gone under your obvious observations. This is a Texas
Tech team that went into Utah and dominated that ute front.
That Utah front is really good, multiple pros, multiple first
round guys up there. Tech was outstanding just with it's
front four. I think that's what's amazing about them. They
don't have to bring a lot of pressure from other
people that up that front four is getting it. Their
defense is in the ninety ninth percentile and havoc percentage,
(23:12):
so they come and get you. This West Virginia offensive
line that has struggled at times, has a heck of
a challenge in front of it. The Tech defense faces
an average of just twenty eight rushing plays per game,
seventh nationally. Why is that most teams are having trouble
running the ball at all, and or you're behind, you
gotta throw it thirty nine pass attempts per game on
(23:32):
average they're facing that's a lot, and that's part of
why the havoc is so big. They turn you into
a passing team, then they then they come get you
and it all flows downhill.
Speaker 1 (23:43):
From when they throw the ground meat hoppy and the
Pirana tech y.
Speaker 3 (23:48):
David Bailey's a guy that got a lot of publicity
for the the Nideal nil deal he signed coming to
Texas Tech, and he's been as as advertised. I think
that's what we've said multiple times. Where Texas went out
and whatever they did, forty million dollars whatever the report is,
and they've yacked up a couple games, right, jacked to
a Florida team that got rid of its coach and
they're sitting at eight and three. Texas Tech has not
(24:09):
done that. It's just handled its business and has been
as advertised except for the Arizona stake game. Bailey has
thirteen sacks on the year. Here's the number that really
jumped though. He's got thirteen sacks good, that's not the
number to The number is seventy one total pressures by him.
He Bailey has seventy one. To put that in context
(24:31):
for you, West Virginia has been pretty good at rushing
the passer this year. When we've seen Wes Virginia play well,
we generally come in the recap and say what they
got after the passer made the passer made the quarterback struggle.
West Virginia's leading player with pressures has twenty three how
many seventy one? West Virginia has nine guys with at
(24:52):
least ten pressures on the season, so it's multiple different guys.
Tech only has five with more than ten, but they
have four with more than twenty three. So their top
end guys, they're just bringing their front line guys and
saying we're coming to get you.
Speaker 2 (25:08):
And Brad, if you can get pressure with four, what's
that do when you're trying to pass.
Speaker 3 (25:11):
Well, then you get trouble throwing the ball into coverage, right,
And so that's why all those numbers have been so good.
So before you go anywhere else, I'm going to go
to a couple different spots. But that Western Deal offensive
line again obvious observation, is going to have to have
its best game of the year if you have any
chance of hanging around and staying in there with this
Texas Tech team. Flip over to the other side. Offensively,
they have a rush offense that's just one thirteenth nationally
(25:34):
in EPA per rush, and they're going against a West
Virginia defense that's fifteenth in the nation in that category.
So if you go back to the blueprint that Arizona
State put forth, it was to lock up their offense,
lock up the Texas Tech offense, and then try and
scratch out some points. Arizona State had four field goals
in that game. So is that the formula there? Can
(25:55):
you hold their offense in check, not give up big
explosive plays, limit their run which you've been good at,
and then hope that you get some short fields, you
get a turnover or two that lead to some points.
Their offense, Texas Techas offense on third down has struggled.
It's just one hundred and twenty seventh nationally in third
down distance.
Speaker 1 (26:14):
It is average. You wanted, you wanted, you wanted, you
wanted a light, and you wanted a shining light. This
is it.
Speaker 3 (26:20):
It's averaged nearly eight yards to go on third down
and it gets a West Virginia defense Guys, that is
sixth nationally enforcing opponents to have to go eight yards
per third down. So that matches up a good on good.
Can you keep that in that area? Texas Tech has
struggled with their distance to go. West Virginia has kept
opponents in third and long. Do you have a chance
(26:41):
right there?
Speaker 2 (26:42):
Yeah, just that that's that's something that gives you a
little bit of hope. But they're averaging what forty points
a game, forty four points a game, something like that,
So they're getting it done even though they got long
third downs that they're not converting.
Speaker 3 (26:56):
Right, they're just fifty ninth nationally in passing success rate.
They've been pretty explosive though, seventy six nationally inexplosive play
percentage through the air. So yeah, listen, they're really good.
I mean they're really good. So building a case for
West Virginia given what the numbers have said all season
is difficult. But Arizona State did that. That's what you do.
(27:17):
Limit their offense, get a turnover too, and see if
you can make something happen. You mentioned Baron Morton. He's
been he's been really good. Seventeen touchdowns, four interceptions. Now,
usually when we see those numbers and they're heavy touchdown
very few interceptions. We've had a bunch this year where
we've said what there's some underlying numbers there that might
(27:40):
be uh yeah, might show you a little more. This
isn't as glaring as some of these others, so I
don't know that I'm ready to say, like we have
in the other worthy a turnovers coming, but they're not
quite as gaudy when you look underneath the hood. Nine
turnover worthy plays with just four interceptions, So that tells
you you might be due for one or two in there.
(28:01):
Maybe you could throw it here a little bit. So
limit the run, make Morton throw it. Maybe you can
come up with an interception or two. In his career,
Baron Morton sixty six touchdowns, twenty six interceptions.
Speaker 2 (28:14):
However, oh okay.
Speaker 3 (28:17):
Forty eight big time throws forty eight turnover worthy place
fifty to fifty, so not totally inconceivable. Again, limit their run,
make Morton throw it, don't give up the explosive, get
some pressure, get them in long third down, come up
with a pick or two. You got to be in
good field position when you get the picks. Try and
scrabble out some field goals right there. Make it a
(28:38):
little bit difficult there and just hang around, hang around
with them. That would be the area in which to
do it. We mentioned this is a big underdog role
for West Virginia twenty three and a half on DraftKings.
As we record, haven't seen this very often for a
West Virginia program. So largest underdog role since twenty nineteen
when you were a thirty two point dog against Oklahoma
one of the games. This has only happened five previous
(29:00):
time since two thousand and one where you've been this
big of an underdog. But you know what, one of
them was boys. And the only time you've covered the
number with a number this big two thousand and three Miami,
when you were a big dog down at their place,
down at their place. I remember kind of a famous game.
Speaker 1 (29:19):
Yeah if you remember, is that cue?
Speaker 3 (29:20):
Yeah, Kellen Winslow play played our ass off down West
Virginia was right there, and then ultimately after that it
led to them taking off. So again that didn't turn
out to a win. It was really close to being
a win. But it's not a situation West Virginia has
found itself in very often. So there are some numbers.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
I'm gonna give you a couple of things. Here's I
was talking about the size of this defense that they've
built defensive end David Bailey sixty three two fifty. Their
nose guards six four three thirty, defensive tackle six three
three hundred. Their dog back, which is like another end,
probably like a bandit type guy six three two forty.
(29:57):
Let's go to the back of middle linebacker ben Roy
Roberts six three two forty. Middle linebacker Jacob Rodriguez is
one of the best defensive players in the country. Pre
season Big twelve Defensive Play the year six one two
thirty five. Their starback, which is like a safety six
two two thirty five corner six foot one ninety five
strong safety six foot two oh five free safety six
(30:21):
four two twenty. And then lastly, their other corner is
six one one eighty five.
Speaker 2 (30:28):
That's incredible.
Speaker 1 (30:29):
I mean, it's a prototype size one.
Speaker 3 (30:31):
Last number on football, this this jumped out. This isn't
necessarily specific to this game, although it's a it's relevant,
But this this surprised me. Guys, we talk all the
time in college sports about how the margin for error
is so thin and small, the difference between winning and losing.
Hop is is a player two here there? How about
this number that just startled me? Texas Tech is number
(30:54):
two nationally in starting field position. On average, they begin
their drives on their own thirty two that was number
two nationally. West Virginia is one hundred and fifth in
that category. Start point, starting point, but they begin their
drives on the twenty nine three yards. Three yards of
field position takes you from number two nationally to a
(31:17):
bottom thirty team three yards. That was stunning to me.
So we talked field position a lot matters. Where you
start matters with exposive plays or can you drive? That's
where a valuable yards comes in. So I saw that
Texas Tech is number two, and it jumped out that
it was only the thirty two. That's an entire college
football subset in between where you are over three yards.
Speaker 1 (31:41):
Rich said, last year at Jacksonville State they were top
five in the nation and starting position, and he said,
we returned two kicks the whole year. Just take touchbacks.
Speaker 2 (31:51):
It's amazing.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
So talk about small margin in an area, isn't that amazing?
Speaker 2 (31:54):
It's like it's like golf, right, the difference between the
top one hundred golfers, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:59):
Is arrow.
Speaker 3 (32:00):
But that particular stat that I thought that was wild.
Speaker 1 (32:02):
Here are some here's some scenarios. You were talking about
what has to happen for Texas Tech to clinch Just
a couple of things. BYU clinch is a title game
appearance with a win over UCF probably happens. Or an
Arizona State loss, Texas Tech clinches a spot in the
title game with a win over West Virginia they beat
the Mountaineers they're in. Or an Arizona State loss Arizona
(32:26):
Arizona State is Friday, they play and so and then
there's a bunch of different scenarios. They got some crazy
stuff that goes like here you ready for this. Arizona
State can clinch a berth in the title game with
a win over Arizona, a Texas Tech loss, a Utah loss,
and a BYU win.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
So you're saying there's a chance, Say there's.
Speaker 1 (32:46):
Saying that there's a chance, saying there's a chance. You
we're gonna do some basketball too.
Speaker 2 (32:51):
Yeah, you want to talk that now.
Speaker 1 (32:52):
In one moment, Okay, three guys, before the game is
brought to us by our friends at Comac's Business Systems,
is a time for the that cranky old business phone
system that you're working to get get it out of there.
Bring in a new one. Technology is absolutely unbelievable. Many
benefits to a new phone system. How about this. You
can hear better, you can follow your co workers where
(33:14):
are they? Where are they? They can remote calls in
forward from their sell anything you want to do. Visit
the fine folks at Comac's Business Systems. They've been at
it twenty five plus years, keeping West Virginia's business data safe,
secure and efficient for over twenty five years. Visit Comac's
Business Systems. Weather's pretty nice right now, really nice now,
(33:37):
like really really nice, like you could bote, you could
vote great, it's almost sixty. It was sick now I
know it's going to get cold. It's gonna get cold.
It's gonna be a little bit chilly. However, however, lou
Wendel Marine sales perfect, perfect time. They've got that new
association with Honda, and as I told you earlier, on
only only dealership in the state that has that Honda designation.
(34:03):
And they've got that Honda mclearing racing motor, like three
hundred plus horse power, like you would be an absolute
speed demon on Cheat Lake. I bet you got a
nice sound to it too, Like if you put that
McLaren on that pontoon. It'd be nice.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
I think the tubing behind it would be fun.
Speaker 1 (34:22):
Oh the kids get going there a little bit, sure,
they'd have a weal of a time. So visit find
folks at Lou Wendell Marine Sales. They've got that Honda
three hundred and a whole lot more. And we congratulate
them on that designation that they've just received on being
the designated Honda dealer. It is the Honda Marine Premium Dealership,
(34:43):
the only one in the state. Honda Marine Premium Dealership
at Lou Wendel Marine Sales. Anything you need when it
comes to voting, it's Lou Wendell Marine Sales. The Amountaineer
basketballers return to action Sunday afternoon, which is becoming a
regular fixture, the three o'clock Sunday afterno noon date. And
we've got the Mercy Hurst. It's gonna be a busy
week for West Virginia basketball Sunday, Wednesday Saturday of next week.
(35:08):
You're gonna bang three more off three opportunities.
Speaker 3 (35:12):
Wake Forest coming up in Charleston, West Virginia next week.
Speaker 1 (35:15):
Pretty good situation on Sunday coming up for the Mountaineers.
Speaker 3 (35:18):
Yeah, I think you like the bounce back spot. Jackson
fields hopefully making his return to the lineup for West Virginia,
So it'll be good to get him in their six'.
Nine really, athletic will help further you on the, glass
will help. YOU i think on the offensive glass, too
that's an Area West virginia needs to find a way
to get a few more offensive. Rebounds, defensively will be.
Good can step out and hit a shot or, two
(35:38):
just gives you some more. Depth so excited to See
jackson come back. In people like to watch him play all.
Right mercyhurst quick quick scouting report on. Them they won't play.
Fast they don't do a lot of transition up and.
Down that's usually a good matchup For West. Virginia saw
it Against. Clemson when when you have them for most
of the, game if you're gonna go, slow that plays
right Into West virginia's. Hands so and eye on. That The,
(36:01):
Lakers mercy, Hears lakers have been good on the offensive.
Glass seventeen percent of their points have come off second.
Chances but here's what's. Interesting talked about this last night
On ross's Show. HOPPY a lot of folks panicked after game,
one and we're worried That West virginia winn't rebound. Again
what we always, say just hold, on just let the
things start to. Play there was some missed free throws
(36:22):
that led to a big rebounding gap in game. One
you know Where West virginia sits now in defensive rebounding
is a team you've climbed all the way to number six,
nationally really the sixth best defensive rebounding team in the.
Country so if you're looking for a, matchup Mercy hurst
likes to get second chance, points but you're going against
The West virginia team that has just not given those,
(36:43):
up only gave up two To clemson the other night In.
Charleston a lot of cuts to the baskets to watch
some back doors from Mercy. Hurst they have not shot
it well from. Three have The lakers just thirty one
percent their best spot hoppy if you want to watch
a spot on the, Floor, yes they're forty four percent
from the white right wing, three so keep an eye
(37:03):
on shutting that. Off they've struggled on guarded catch and
shoot threes just twenty six, percent which leads me to
a number that made my jaw drop this.
Speaker 1 (37:11):
Morning jaw. Dropper you're into these numbers all the, time
so for one to jaw drop you this by pretty
pretty significant surprise.
Speaker 3 (37:18):
Me there's a lot Of we talk regression a, lot, yes,
right both positive and. Negative we thought regression was coming
For xavier the other Night, tony and it just never.
Did never had of thirteen from three in the first.
Half it was reasonable to assume that would cool in the.
Second it did. Not they win eight of. Twelve regression usually.
Happens so far on the young, season, guys teams are
(37:42):
shooting fifty four percent Against West virginia on unguarded catch and. Shoots,
now they haven't had a lot of. Them West virginia's
done a really good job Of they just don't allow
a lot of open on guarded catching. Shoots but when
teams have been getting, that they've been shooting like AN
mba esque fifty four percent Against West. Virginia you might, say,
well would you like some context on that? Hobby is
(38:03):
that going to happen very?
Speaker 2 (38:04):
Often?
Speaker 3 (38:05):
Yes, well right, Now West virginia is three hundred and
sixty second nationally in opponent points per possession off on
guarded catching, Shoots so it's one of the bottom teams
in the. Country teams are making a lot of these
on guarded. Shots SO i started going back because that
fifty four percent out of like a, lot that feels
like regression is coming. There teams aren't going to continue
to do.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
THAT i didn't.
Speaker 3 (38:25):
THINK i had to go all the way back as
far as the database would allow me to two thousand and,
six two thousand and, seven AND i still couldn't get
to an opponent shooting fifty four percent from three on
on guarded catching. Shoots the biggest NUMBER i could get
to was forty five percent in that two thousand and
six oh seven. Season so my point is a lot
(38:46):
of that was driven by villan Or. Villanovta xavier hit
a bunch of those on Guarded they didn't get, many
but the ones they got they. Hit that number will
start to come down a little.
Speaker 1 (38:57):
Bit is this? All you're just talking specifically threes.
Speaker 3 (39:00):
On guarded catching shoot anything unguarded catch and shoot?
Speaker 1 (39:03):
Threes, okay, yeah so.
Speaker 3 (39:04):
Times a percentage Against West virginia in that niche category
now that we have we have not. SEEN i couldn't
go back any further than seventeen years. Ago nineteen years.
Ago however long that's.
Speaker 1 (39:13):
Been, yeah, yeah. Wild you, KNOW i want to see
when regression happens For. XAVIER i guarantee you next, game
they're going to go out. Here they're going to go
out here in next game or, two and you're going
to look at the number and they're going to be
like four for thirty two or four for twenty. Six
they're going to have a crap. Night it's just going to.
Happen that's.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
BASKETBALL i just thought that was, wild, though because normally
college basketball is not it's NOT nba shooter. Level LIKE,
nba you leave guys open and more often than not
they're banging. It that just doesn't happen in. College even
when guys are, open they're not hitting at a fifty
four percent. Rate so That's it's just it's a small
sample size And westerda is still only it's five and
(39:52):
two on the. Season it's only had two, losses but
that number should should, drop which gives you some more
opportunities moving. Forward, no that surprised. Me didn't expect.
Speaker 1 (40:02):

(44:51):
old son Named deacon seems to be primed for a
spot in the pitching. Rotation look at. That look at
that looks like he's coming three quarters there over the,
top good, form, right and then he says also solid
solid field ground ball guy as. Well So deacon it
will send it along to Coach sabans and maybe he
can send a prospective student athlete.
Speaker 2 (45:13):
Note see if you can work that left hand a
little bit, more.
Speaker 1 (45:16):
Sure gonna be a. Lefty good luck to do a deacon,
There charlie from Mid. LOTHIAN i bet you guys didn't
have two different texts from Mid lothian on your bingo
card on the same podcast last. WEEK i didn't even
realize we did. That we had a couple of Mid.
LOTHIANS i sure hope That jay down there in Mid
lothians taking advantage of those fuel saving. Opportunities at the
(45:36):
Mid Lothian kroger's, question any chance we see the jumbo
package with ten blockers And Curtis jones in the wildcat.
Formation oftentimes people like, say, hey what if you did?
This what if you did? That and then they're kind of,
LIKE i don't think that's NOT i don't think that's
too far off. BOARD i could see that happening in
(45:59):
a short yard is. Situation you've had a couple of
weeks to get ready put a bunch of those big
guys out there and have a direct snap back To Curtis. Jones,
YEAH i could see that happening.
Speaker 3 (46:08):
Possible over under seven and a half carries For Curtis jones,
TOMORROW i Mean.
Speaker 2 (46:13):
Saturday, Boy, well since we have more injuries back, There
i'm gonna go over. Over maybe Maybe.
Speaker 1 (46:23):
I'm gonna go under under seven and a.
Speaker 2 (46:26):
Half, RIGHT i don't, KNOW i gotta think about. It
might be.
Speaker 1 (46:33):
Over, okay here's my chart in front of me from
the first game of the season Against Robert. Morris this
was the running back. Rotation Jaheim white out for the.
Year Clay ash suffered through a lot of. Injuries he
does return this, weekend but he's had a walking boot
on for the last several Sincere, bowers he's missed games
(46:54):
because of injuries this. Year De Or hubbard now out
for the, season Ty edwards now out for the. Season
Tyler jacklitch has also missed weeks because of. Jury so
if you you shut your self officer or weaks than
none For. Jackolyitch. Yeah so if you add In Curtis,
jones you're at number.
Speaker 3 (47:12):
Seven, well hold, on go to eight Because jaden knighton
was really ONE, a ONE b on that. Chart he
never got on the field because of academics he was
he was supposed to play a big.
Speaker 1 (47:22):
Role here was my depth. Charted Quarterback game one gives you.
Eight Nico, Markiel Jalen, Henderson Max brown out out AND
i Had Scotty fox at four and Then khalil after.
Him every single one of those guys banged.
Speaker 3 (47:38):
And it actually went and reverse That wilkins started Before
fox first. Starts So fox is TECHNICALLY qb four correct
in that.
Speaker 1 (47:44):
Situation and, uh wide receiver game week, One Man Man,
Singleton Man man went bye, Bye jade And bray out
for the. Season. Uh and that's. IT i mean pretty
much the rest of those guys of, State Cam, Vaughn Gerard,
Bowie Justin, Smith, Brown Jeff, Weimer Rodney, gallagher And Preston.
(48:06):
Fox so it's been at that running back quarterback, POSITION
i mean tight end you, know bang but. Okay and,
defensively these, GUYS i, mean for the most, part, defensively
you have not had any, massive you, know like jaw
dropping injuries back.
Speaker 3 (48:26):
There on the defensive Christ jones had seven carries In
West friny's last game Against Arizona. State hubbard was limited
in that.
Speaker 1 (48:33):
Game over this, Week i'm going over revised good good
switch Think joe And Charleston. Wrights he's From, Charleston South.

great mountaineer support And Phil, weezer who passed away this past.
