Speaker 1 (00:17):
Greetings everybody, and welcome in. It's time for three Guys

a DOUBLET double it double it?
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Is that a word?
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Yeah? Double it? Do O U B L double it
double it d O U B L E T and
do We're going to buy for Kate the show into
two different topics. We're going we're gonna cut in half.
We're going to do a little football. West Virginia and
TCU the recap and Mountaineer basketballers made their public debut
(00:49):
their first and only exhibition game. We'll move us now
toward the regular season opener coming up next week. We'll
get into all of that and more Hoppies here. Gonna
be a special day for hoppy I'll just say that
right now, Senator. I'm just saying senators here as well.

a Tutor's biscuit. Also, we've got a lot of the
seasonal events, holiday events coming up. They can cater those
for you. We'll talk about that Comac's business systems. They
keep West Virginia's business data safe, secure and efficient, been
doing it for twenty five years. But they also have
the best water machines in the world. Figured about all
that plastic. They got a water machine. I mean they
(01:53):
use all of it. H the two and the O.
Put them all together. It's unbelievable. Hot and cold. Three
guys brought to us by Jen Attorneys at Law they
won't take no for an answer, and by Conley CPA
Group providing value beyond numbers. Alrighty Courts and Session. We
delayed our show taping. Normally we go Sunday mornings during
(02:16):
football season, but because the Mountaineer basketballers basketballed yesterday afternoon
against the visiting Cardinals of Wheeling University, we delayed, and
so we record now on a Monday afternoon.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
A lot of people tuned in live yesterday morning to
see if they can catch the show.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Yeah, did understand. We had a little bit of a
problem in that regard Last Thursday at Buffalo Wild Wings.
People showed up and thought we were doing another live
show there because they kind of got into a rotation
Thursday before a home game and we weren't there. Sorry,
everyone did not.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
Yeah, we did no more Buffalo Wild Wing shows during
the football season, but we are efforting.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
We might. We're going to do something again with Buffalo
Wild Wings. They're great. I want to talk about a
little bit later on as well, because they got a
promotion that's going on right now which is super super great,
and we'll talk about that. We will do something else
with Buffalo Wild Wings as well. All right, West Virginia Footballers.
They lose twenty three seventeen to the horn Frogs of TCU.
(03:18):
It's an interesting game to pull apart and to dissect.
Had I told you last week. I came in here
and banged my fist down on the table and said,
if I said I'll make a bet with you, what
do you want to bet? I bet you Scottie Fox
has more passing yards than Josh Hoover. You each would
(03:39):
have lost your houses right and all your worldly possessions,
but that's what happened. Fox throws for three to oh one,
two touchdowns and no picks, and Josh Hoover is one
of the country's best twenty four thirty nine for two
four seven and a touchdown. Scotty Fox's quarterback rating was
one forty six and Josh Hoover was won twenty three.
(04:03):
But we only play for the result, we don't play
for stats. And TC wins it by a score of
twenty three seventeen. So we will dissect the game. Brad
will look into the numbers and then the basketballers, Ross
Hodge and his staffs first ever public outing onto the
(04:23):
coliseum floor. Now, just think about the significance of that.
West Virginia has had four coaches in the last four years. Remarkable.
That's four coaches in the last four years. Second year
in a row that zero players returned that scored a
point or a rebound. So yesterday was super significant, you
know what, because I think Ross is going to be
(04:45):
here for more than a year, and how many years
it's going to be, I don't know. I think it
will be multiple years. And so that game yesterday was
significant because that's the first time that they walked out
on that floor and there was the Mountaineer crowd and
they ran out onto the carpet and they had the
whole shebang, and they sang Country Roads after it was
all over. And so that is significant. Phil Forte, who's
(05:08):
on the Mountaineer coaching staff, who played on the coliseum
floor for the Cowboys of Oklahoma State. He came over
to us just before the game started. He said, dude,
he goes, this is really super weird. He said. When
I walked in here, he said, I got that that
nervous butterflies chills that you get when you go to play.
But now he's doing it for the Mountaineers. By the way,
(05:30):
he was forced into a shooting competition Friday night over
at the ball and at Woodburn. Director of athletics Ren
Baker basically gave him an edict, you go out there
and you shoot against Donner Huff and Phil just said
what he goes, yes, shoot, He goes, Okay, want me
to shoot, I'll shoot. He went out there and knocked shots.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
Down Honor needed Honor had already had matriculated his way
through the bracket and then won the three point shooting contest,
and then all of a sudden, Phil's name was called up.
I mean Phil had a couple of layers on of
coach standing there for a while. He says, all right,
is that right? You me to go shoot? Tucked coat,
right off, stepped up, took one shot from the free
throw line, switched it, took one shot from the three
point line, said right, let's go to start the clock,
(06:10):
and Honor needed a last second three to beat Forte.
Still got it.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
Yeah, still got it. Credit to Phil, still got it.
So we'll get into that. Women's basketball team also won
easily in its exhibition against Paramount State, and it sets
us all up a soccer head.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Of soccer loss.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
Yeah, the women won. Women beat Oklahoma State two zip.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
Men, Nicky's got that thing rolling, she does meg it.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
The men lost at Kentucky one zip. Oh, and so
now that hurt in regard to winning the conference championship.
But they still have a few games left and they
got to get themselves straight.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Marshall included in that was a tough three game finish
for Westernting Soccer rise Kentucky South Carolina Marshall final.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
Three correct, correct, So that's what we got going on.
All right, we're ready to jump in. Let's go, hop
Are you ready?
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Okay, I don't know if you are ready.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
I'm ready.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
I don't think you. I don't know if you are.
What do you? Why are you?
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Why are you want me today?
Speaker 1 (07:07):
I'm not anya? But uh A few shows ago, Yeah,
so said, where's Hoppy's music?
Speaker 2 (07:14):
Oh? I forgot about that. Well you don't have to
do that. That's okay.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Oh no, I'm doing it because it's not the it's
not the same song. Oh really, yeah, a song someone
submitted this song?
Speaker 4 (07:26):
Oh, I hadn't heard we got a Hoppy song?
Speaker 1 (07:28):
Can you hear it without headphones? I can?
Speaker 4 (07:30):
Okay, that's all right, go ahead, play it. Sure, it's wonderful.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
Wait, this is our This is the opening to Hoppy's
obvious observations. He's hearing it, Brad's hearing it for the
first time. Let's do that.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
I haven't heard it.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
Yeah, that's what I said. Oh okay, he's hearing it,
and Brad's hearing it for the first time. How is
your hearing?
Speaker 2 (07:45):
I'm sorry?
Speaker 1 (07:46):
What here we go?
Speaker 5 (07:48):
He's got thoughts that sound brand new, but the things
we already knew. Bomb ready heaven knows, I take it
quick beforevation.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
Hoppy, take it away with your obvious observations. By the way,
very good. We have a close. We have a closed
one when you're done.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
Yeah, that's awesome. That's right.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Who did that? Gary Mertens, Gary Mertens did it? Send
it to me, Gary Mertens did it.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
That's pretty good.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
He's a guy that worked for us for years here
and now now down Florida. But like most of our
people that leave the state of West Virginia, rabid listener.
Sure he's a p one, he texted me, then opening
the close for Hoppy's obvious observation. So obviously, what do.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
You have here?
Speaker 1 (08:41):
We go.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
I'm going to start by quoting to leading sports announcers
and analysts in West Virginia. I'm going to quote Tony Coreedy.
At the end of the game, Tony said, it was
a valiant effort. Tony, You're right, that was a valiant
effort by this Mountaineer team offensively and defensively, because Brad, what.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Have we seen the week before?
Speaker 4 (09:03):
A lackluster performance?
Speaker 3 (09:05):
Lackluster lackluster performance, and West Virginia gave you and I'm
sure they made mistakes and Brad, you'll have some numbers
to reflect that. And Rich Rodriguez wasn't completely happy. And
I'm not looking for a moral victory, but you saw effort,
You saw athletes straining on both sides of the ball,
and you came within a couple of plays of winning
(09:26):
the game, a couple of plays of winning the game.
And again I know, well close doesn't count. But when you,
when you are what you have been, you're looking for something,
and that was, in fact.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
A valiant effort.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
That's a very fair point.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
So I'm taking from you, but I thought that was
the appropriate word.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Now I'm going to quote Brad.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
Oh this is dangerous. Brad always this thing where he's
quoting us. Now, how do we just say stuff? It
should not be brought back to be held against us.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
No, I'm not holding I'm building on it.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Brad always says what you're allowed to get better, you're
allowed to get better. And the week before we looked
at that even said you got worse. Had the week
often got worse. This team, for whatever reason, in that
week preparing for TCU got better. They played harder, they
played more effectively, They got better, and that was encouraging
(10:14):
and one of the reasons they got better you've already
alluded to is Scotti Fox. You saw in Scotty Fox.
I mean, you'll Rad, I'll get into the numbers, but
I mean that that was a really good performance by
a true freshman. And we've heard a lot about Scotty
Fox that he has all these skills, hadn't really seen
it yet, and it got shaken up in the pit games,
so won a couple of picks and it took a
(10:34):
while from the recover from that. And you can't make
a judgment based on one game, but you did, Brad,
see what he's capable of doing. Now can you repeat that?
Don't know, but you saw what he is capable of
and that was encouraging. So again, as Brad says, you're
allowed to get better. And they got better. Yep, and
they got better. So that was good.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
The crowd.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
And we've said often too that the old that the
thirty five or thirty eight thousand that calm or stick
around when things aren't going so well can make as
much have much of an impact as sixty thousand, And
that crowd was into it. Those who stayed and were
entertained by tremendous light shows. They were into it and
making a difference at the end of the game, So
props to the crowd. And finally, you know, Tony, one
(11:22):
of the great things about watching the Mountaineers, about being
a fan is that if you can at times during
the game separate yourself just a little bit and look
at it objectively, you get to see outstanding performers, and
not just not just Mountaineer performers from McCown, but other
players from other teams that to play at this level
(11:45):
you got to be really good.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
And then you watch a game and you see a
guy and you.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Go, oh, he's different than everybody else. And then in
two or three years, you're just flicking around on Sunday
watching NFL games, go oh, I remember that guy. Yep,
I remember that guy, And for some reason I think
of Tyler Lockett. Remember Tyler Lockett from Kansas State who
had about fifty catches against West Virginia.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
Still out there, just sign just signed with the Raiders today.
Oh did he Yeah, and just went back with Pete Carroll.
But yeah, he's been towards the end. But I had
a hell of a career.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
Heck of a career. So there are players like that
that when you see.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
Them, you go ooh, he's different, and Eric McAllister is different.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
That's he's a dude. He's a dude.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
So that that those are my obvious observations.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
Do you have any basketball observations?
Speaker 2 (12:30):
I don't because I didn't see the game.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
Okay, I didn't see I mean I looked at the
box looked at the box score.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
So that this you're saying that this concludes Hoppies obvious observations.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
I'm saying that, yeah, yeah, we can wrap it up there.
You guys got more information than I do. But I
thought that, uh, generally speaking, this game Saturday was was
entertaining and compelling, had a chance there at the end,
and when you're having the kind of season that you're
having to see what they did Saturday and again not
(13:03):
to make an excuse or say, well to moral victory
was encouraging.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
It's exactly the word I was gonna was encouraging. So
there you have it, and that concludes hobbies obvious observations one, two, three.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Go oh, I don't have a closet.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
I'm not screwing this thing up. Oh wait, you're on
the wrong pot.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
You're on the wrong pot aren't you you're not playing
out of the PC.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
No, no, I had it was something obvious thoughts from
Hobby's point of view.
Speaker 5 (13:40):
Segment has been brought to us by Bless Decks, the Bombing,
the Blue Can smooth talk.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
That's the plan.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
Thank you. There you go.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
I feel I feel like i'm scene.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
Yeah, I mean we bliss X is the official sponsor,
although they're not paying us anything for Hoppies obvious observations. No, okay,
very good. I think you put it in a nice nutshell.
Thank you. Interesting that you bring up the crowd, because
when we get to textual healing in a little bit,
there were some polarizing views about the crowd.
Speaker 4 (14:20):
I gonna say I'd give the crowd credit. Yeah, that
looked good at the beginning of.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
That people people went both extremes. Yeah, they went, hey,
crowd was really good, and then we have people to go,
what are we doing?
Speaker 2 (14:28):
Huh?
Speaker 4 (14:28):
I thought it was. I thought it was really good
at the beginning, and credit hop. I'll say to you now, listen,
I realized, as a former marketing guy, I'm probably on
the far end of the spectrumist. But I love me
a good theme night. Yeah, I love the uniforms, so
great uniforms execution. Those damn numbers almost looked like they
were led. You had to love that. Yeah, they were
like they were like lit up there. So I love
(14:50):
the uniforms, and I thought that light show was outstanding.
You if you time that up and get that light
show in a night when West Virginia's rolling in a
big game, that'll be that'll be tremendous. So credit the
marketing department much like you, and I know I don't
need to give the disclaimer, but I will because if I
don't get the disclaimer, then we're gonna yelled at for
not giving the disclaimer. I realize this program was not
built on moral victories, as you said. However, that was
(15:12):
perfectly stated by you. Given how this has looked in
Big twelve play, I think you can walk away from
that going okay, there, you didn't win, but you're an
on side kick near recovery away from making that really interesting.
You're a fumble lath that took a weird balance that
benefited TCU away from making it really close. You're an
absolutely horrific misspass interference no PI call in the corner
(15:35):
of the end zone away from making it really interesting.
You're maybe only two fourth down conversions away, or don't
go for it on two more fourth downs from making
it really interesting. So you're into it, but just from
a look standpoint, and I'll get into some defensive numbers.
That's what you wanted from that defense, right, you had
a really explosive offense with a talented quarterback and a
(15:57):
great receiver, and you held those guys in.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
Oh, by the way, let's give them the ball three
times on our side of the field. Yes, in the
first half.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
And what did they get three out of that?
Speaker 4 (16:08):
Or yes, we'll go into that number as well, because
the number that we always look at was was lopsided
and it turned out to get another win. But if
you start to go down these you were in that
game and had the look of a team that could
compete in this league and was about to win a
game at home over what's been a very good team
with a prolific offense. So I thought, just overall, the
getting to the football, the breaking up passes, the delivering
(16:30):
hits on a defensive side, a defense that had really struggled.
I was encouraged to see that. And then, of course,
as you said, hoppy having Scottie Fox the arm talent's
been obvious since the very first throw he made in
his first practice. You know he can throw the football.
To have that offense come together, the lineup tweaks along
the offensive line from a pass blocking perspective were improved.
(16:50):
Still struggled to run it, but you threw the ball
and looked like an effective offense. You out first downed.
TCU wouldn't have said that going into the game. And
again there's other numbers I'll dive into, but just from
a look perspective of that game, you had hope, you
had some life, and you were right there save for
a bounce of the ball one way or the other.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
Three guys before the game is brought to us by Gomart.
This coming Friday will be Halloween. Big Candy has taken
over the world. Right now, this is Big Candy's biggest
week of the year. But just this reminder, the day
after Halloween will be this Saturday. Triple rewards points available
to anyone that goes into a Gomart and has the
(17:31):
Gomart app on their phone or a Gomart card. So
either go to the website gomart dot com or go
to the app store and get that thing because I
mean big candies having this week. You also can take
advance of all kinds of specials. Check them out. Triple
rewards points on Saturday. Go for good times, go for Gomart.
Three guys, also brought to us by Jam.
Speaker 4 (17:50):
I'm on a nice winning streak with that. That's two
Saturdays in a row for gas Phillips on a Saturday.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
Points.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
I might own a Gomart here pretty soon?
Speaker 1 (17:58):
Were you empty? Empty? Nothing better? When you go to
get rewards points and you're like, you come in on fume.
Speaker 4 (18:03):
I ran I ran it pretty well. Yeah, I ran
it up pretty good. So you're in mid season form
on two two for just two for two. It's a
week to week business. Hop as I like to say.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
It's easy. How this week goes, you can improve, it's
fair to. It's fair to. You can improve. You you
just got to stack Saturdays.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
I've sacked two. Yeah, we'll see how this week preparation goes.
Speaker 1 (18:21):
Three guys before the game. Also brought to us by
Jan Dill's Attorneys at Law. They serve clients in every
one of our states here in the US of A.
That includes Alaska and Hawaii, forty nine and fifty and
what do they do well? They are number one in
the free world. And this is just my opinion. I mean,
they're number one in the free world when it comes
to help and you get veterans benefits and social security claims.
(18:44):
If you are someone that you know needs help in
that world of military benefits or social security claims, go
with the people to do it each and every single day,
and they will guide you through what can be a
bit of a bureaucratic process. Don't go at it alone.
Doesn't cost you a penny until they collect for you
because a Jan Dill's attorneys at law, and they won't
(19:05):
take no for an answer, whether you're here in West
Virginia or outside of the state. They've got people in
every single state that they take care of. All right,
are we ready? You know I went. I was so
proud of myself that I got the music, you know,
built in for hoppies thing. I still don't have your
spreads on stats. I still got to go analog on that.
But nevertheless, let's uh, let's do that.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
Didn't we work this out in the meeting.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
We've got to have the meeting that was there we
go spreads on stats as Blantos by the Conley CPA group.
What are they Well, they're a full service public accounting
for them and a whole lot more. You know, the
world has changed when it comes to a counting. They
can guide you through, can we say, rather intricate maze
(19:53):
of rules and regulations. They got you covered, full service
public accounting approaching. Well, they're right in the midst of
their forty year anniversary. Think about that. If you stay
in business for forty plus years, you're doing it right.
They also can help you out when you would like
to know remote in outsource your accounting. They can do
(20:15):
that for you, and that's really really neat outsource in
your accounting. And they also can provide CFO services for you.
They got it all Conley's CPA group. You went full
buddy hollyglasses on this.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
Huh, he's got to I bet he's got a ton.
Speaker 4 (20:30):
There's a lot in those games, guys, as you know,
when they're closer, you win. There's always a lot more
interesting numbers to come out there. You can kind of
dive in and see and I think what what we
just talked about there is illustrated by some of these numbers.
The fourth down decisions were really if you get down
to it, that might have been the deciding factor right there.
And Rich was caught, wasn't he because early in the
(20:52):
game it had the look that you were going to
get beat by five touchdowns again. So he has to
go for it, I think a little bit earlier, and
positions that he wouldn't normally do. I know he said
afterwards that he'd do it again, and he likes to
go for it, but I just have a hard time
thinking if he had known how it would play out
and how much the defense would keep you in it there.
I just don't know that you'd go for it those
(21:13):
couple of times. And you wonder if you had those
back or if you just converted, because a couple of
them were so close, and I'm not sure that you
know the spots aren't exact as we said, and they're
not exact. And I'm not blaming the spots because just
go push forward and get the half of the yard,
get the yard. I get it. But a couple of
them were really close, and I think that game may
in fact just flip on that because you lost. Now
(21:35):
to put some numbers to that, some early fourth down
misses changed your win probability by about ten percent, and
it was the biggest swing in the game for any
single play or anything else. Two fourth down conversions early
swung you almost ten percent in win probability. So again,
it was one of those rare situations where normally you
could stand up your hop and second guests all day,
(21:56):
but you can't second guess because I see where he
was going. You're looking that you're down ten to nothing
and you're thinking, I got to make something happen now
where we're going to be down thirty five to nothing
with this explosive offense.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
And they averaged thirty six. Sure, you got your.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
Points, so you understand it. You got to go and
you got to get points, and you got to take
chances when you've looked like you've looked. But that, ultimately
I think might have been the difference in the game.
Another part, TCU was just excellent in the red zone.
That short field that they were given so many times
led them to more scoring opportunities and they were effective
when they did that. The number we mentioned earlier field
position again, difference in the game plus thirteen for TCU.
(22:30):
So there's that number again. If you're plus ten yards
ninety some percent of the time you win the game
you did. And then the lack of turnover, and I'll
get into some of that because we talked a lot
about that on Thursday. But TCU and essence forced turnovers
by getting those fourth down stops. West Virginia wasn't able
to get them. And man, they were close on a
couple and weren't able to get those, and that probably
(22:51):
spun the game a little bit as well. Let's go
back and look at Thursday what we talked about, what
things came true, what things didn't. We talked about the turnovers,
and as good as Josh Hoover was, we said, an
interception should be coming, they're a turnover where he plays there?
Oh man, it was there, wasn't it. That third down
pass was right in the hands of the defender and
you just couldn't hold on to it. It was it
(23:12):
was dropped, so the turnover did not come to fruition.
You had the opportunity, you just couldn't close it. We
said he would attack the middle of the field, that's
where he liked to go, and he did nineteen of
twenty five for seventy six percent completion percentage down the
middle of the field for one hundred and eighty four
of his yards. He finished with what two hundred and
twenty seven is It was like eighty two percent of
(23:33):
his passing yards came in the middle of the field.
We k force that, we knew that's where he would attack.
But here's what's impressive, because we talked about their explosive
ability ninety fifth percentile in pass explosive percentage. Coming into
the game, you had to watch the deep ball from
Hoover and this offense a big old goose egg of
(23:53):
passes of twenty yards or more in this game. So
everything else you want to say about the defense, all
the good, you can wipe it. They did not allow
a twenty yard pass to an offense that lives on
the big play and wants to hit you deep, and
they did not against this defense. That's probably what kept
you in the game here.
Speaker 2 (24:09):
Encouraging. Yes, well, we talked about it.
Speaker 1 (24:11):
Big play you cannot, I mean, because West Virginia has
just been absolutely abused by the big play really for
the most part throughout the season. And what happens when
you don't allow those, Well, you're right in the game,
you're right there to win it.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
You're right there and holding them.
Speaker 3 (24:23):
I mean if we would said Thursday, can you hold
them to twenty three, you'd take that all day.
Speaker 4 (24:27):
Yeah, all right, question, no question. We'll come back to
some defensive numbers because they were worth talking about again.
We asked the question, would West Virginia be able to
run it on TCU. The numbers said the Frogs defense
was outstanding against the run, but those numbers also told
you you might be able to throw it on them.
Well that's exactly how it played out, Hopy. You struggle
to run the football again under two yards per carry
(24:49):
for West Virginia, But man, you guys said it both.
Scotty Fox was outstanding twenty eight to forty one, three
to ho one, two touchdowns. No picks had a positive
expected points added per pass play in this game, so
that each play getting you closer to adding points as
a whole came through. That is hard to do. Westerviniya
has not been able to do that all year. That
(25:10):
was absolutely tremendous. The overall offensive success rate for both teams,
so the percentage of plays that were deemed successful based
on yardage and down Both teams were below average on
the day, but West Virginia's was better than TCUs would
not have set that coming in for an offense that
has struggled to find an identity and moved it. They
(25:31):
had one Saturday hot. Now it's a week to week business.
Don't know if you'll be able to do it against Houston,
whose pass defense numbers are really good. But West Virginia
had an identity on Saturday. Fox to Vaughn in particular,
was that working. Yes, like lineup Cam Vaughn, you know
what's coming to him, go ahead and try and guard him.
Pretty good, so that worked out extremely overall success rate
West Virginia with the win. One more thing on Hoover
(25:53):
I didn't mention you held him to his worst Pro
Football focused grade of the season and his worst pass
grade of the season. Pretty good, Yeah, pretty good, all right.
Defense held TCU to a negative EPA per play Expected
points added per play, held tc TCU to a lower
yards per play than what you put up. Again, absolutely
(26:15):
massive given the big play nature of that TCU offense.
We talked about the TCU offense ninety five percent on
nationally supposed to play rate. Mentioned that again because that
was really impressive. What West Virginia was able to do.
We said TCU was number four in the country in
third and fourth down success, but one twenty two in
average third down distance, and there should be some regression
(26:38):
coming on that. TCU average distance to go eight point
seven yards. In this game, West Virginia did a great job.
Just six of sixteen on third down, finished seven of
eighteen on end of drives third and fourth thirty nine
percent held them below their average on end of possession drive,
so there was some regression that came. A lot of
that regression was forced by a good defense, but you
(26:59):
put them in third and long most of the night.
West Virginia's defense finished hoppy this is making a return,
haven't used it much. Finished in the ninety fourth percentile
with a twenty one percent havoc rate, So they created
a havoc play on twenty one percent of the plays,
which is really good. Those are tackles for loss as
sacks or In this game, there were a lot of
(27:20):
pass breakups. Thought the defensive backs overall did a pretty
good job of knocking down passes, so the numbers back
up what you saw hop on the defense. Really good effort. Offensively,
West Virginia had a positive expected points added on their
early downs, so really good. They were effective on early downs,
is what that's saying. It led to an average third
down distance of just four point one yards. It had
(27:43):
been over seven yards to go on third down. Now
you just didn't convert enough five of twenty one on
end of drive plays. And again, if you're pointing to
one thing in that game that probably flipped it, it's
that you get a couple more of those first downs
and you're probably in better shape and may steal one
of those fifty three percent success rate on early down
passes that was ten percent better than TCU. Again, with
(28:07):
one of the best quarterbacks in passing games in the league,
you were better with a success rate on early downs.
Really impressive available yards. We've talked about that a lot
this year with this defense a huge improvement. TCU had
fifty one percent of the available yards. West Virginia forty
six percent of those available yards. That numbers close. The
score was pretty close. I already mentioned the field position game.
(28:28):
That was a huge advantage for TCU due to those
lack of fourth down conversions. Some PFF grades. That's the
best offensive grade versus an FBS opponent this season for
West Virginia. That's the best pass offense grade versus an
FBS opponent this season. It's the second best pass blocking
grade this season overall, it's the second best receiving grade
(28:50):
overall this season. It's the best defensive grade versus an
FBS opponent this season, and it's the best coverage grade
in any game this season. So again, one of those
games the numbers backed down up what you saw with
your eyes on the field.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
You're couraging, encouraging, encouraging, valuant.
Speaker 4 (29:04):
Effort, very encouraging. How about this for Scotty Fox, hop
does pressure on the quarterback make a difference? It does
when he was kept clean. Scotty Fox was twenty two
of twenty nine for two hundred and thirty yards, one touchdown,
seventy six percent completion rate. We had time to throw.
He was extremely effective. His best area of the field
zero to nine yards across the middle eleven of fourteen
one twenty one overall in the middle nineteen of twenty
(29:28):
four for two h two and one touchdown.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
It was really good to see Cam Vaughn back involved
because he had been a non factor for the last
couple of games. Because the offense was a non factor.
But I don't know what his targets were bread but
I think it had six catches.
Speaker 4 (29:41):
Twelve twelve targets. Six catches, it felt like eighteen targets. Yeah, yeah,
twelve twelve targets. A couple more quick grades. Best grade
on the defense, Darien Lewis had just twenty six snaps
but graded out at the top Fred Perry the highest
grade for a guy that played the majority of those snaps.
How about Devin Grant? Team high seven pressures fifteen total
for the game is what PFF credit West Virginia with
(30:03):
Grant had seven of them really good. I mentioned held
Hoover to his lowest grade of the season, oh four
on balls of twenty yards or more. Offensively, again, no surprise.
Vaughn and Fox are your two best offensive grades for
guys that played the bulk of the snaps. But here's
an encouraging sign. Livingston and Nick Kray right behind him
in terms of offensive grades. So two of your offensive
(30:23):
linemen you saw that lineup tweak, Haslam and Agbo played
more in this game, and again, the pass blocking was
very good at times. There's some football numbers.
Speaker 1 (30:33):
It's a lot of numbers.
Speaker 4 (30:34):
I know that was fast, but I had a lot
to get to.
Speaker 2 (30:35):
Fred Perry creates some havoc. He has his own havoc number.
Speaker 4 (30:38):
He's a havoc dude.
Speaker 1 (30:39):
Yeah. What did you think of the early first quarter
contact between Fred Perry and Josh Hoover when Kariko made
the initial tackle and Fred came in on the sidewinder
really close, I mean really really close. I mean he bloodied,
He bloodied his mouth up. They took him over to
the sideline. He was a remember got Yes, I was wondering,
(31:02):
like we were looking at that during the commercial, going like,
is they're gonna, they're gonna Dwight. Dwight felt that it
was a shoulder rather than a helmet.
Speaker 4 (31:10):
Shoulder came up into him.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
That's what That's what they're That's what they thought. So too.
But I thought when it happened and we went like,
uh oh, that would be problematic both ways. But yeah,
he he was one of four before that hit and
then he went out there and you know, he played well.
But I just wonder, I took a shot a lot
of blood, a lot of blood coming out there. All right, basketball,
(31:35):
we'll get into that here. Textual healing as well. We'll
get into that as well. With a reminder to you

Sales dot com. Basketball. On the men's side, West Virginia
(33:06):
rolls to an eighty to fifty four victory over the
Cardinals of Wheeling University. West Virginia was up twenty at halftime,
outscored the visitors by six in the second half. A
bunch of dudes played and it was interesting because the
combination of defense and three point shooting is what this
(33:29):
team is going to rest itself upon this season. Defense
was there yesterday. They held Wheeling to thirty three percent
from the field on eighteen to fifty four. West Virginia
shot the ball well overall, fifty one percent. Right, you'll
take that for the rest of your games this season. However,
from three point distance. They finished up just six of twenty,
(33:49):
which is thirty percent, and half of those three belonged
to Jaden Forsyth and he made him probably in the
last four minutes of the second hyesh. Yeah, so he
banged three. Otherwise you were sitting there at three. So
it just goes to show that that three point shot,
as we all know, some nights it's there. Some nights
it's not finicky partner. Yeah, at all three point it's
(34:10):
a finicky partner. And uh, that's why you had to
That's why you got a guard. That's why you gotta
guard your takeaways.
Speaker 4 (34:17):
Yeah, just that. But I do think this credit to
credit to Wheeling. That's you know, I talk a lot
about that league, the Mountain East Conference. It's a it's
a really good basketball league. The one difference it has
between high major basketball, and it showed up yesterday is
just size. Guys are missing a couple of inches at
the Division two level that they have at Division one.
In West Virginia took advantage at Harlan Obioha Brenn and
(34:40):
Laurent seven foot and sixty nine. Really Athletic had their
way inside, but I thought the perimeter defensive Wheeling was
very good. And here's why that's a test and how
what you're trying to do in those scrimmages. Yeah, it's
about the result. Yeah, you want to win. Yeah, you
want to win by thirty so somebody can be happy.
But you're also trying to to help your team improve
on something. And I thought we're Wheeling gave West Virginia
(35:00):
a really good look. Is with one of the strategies
that you're gonna see from teams, what pick your poison?
Do you want to double down when the ball goes
in the post or at least dig hop when you
when you send the perimeter defender down to swipe at
the ball and potentially leave yourself open to a kick
for a three point shooter in Eagle Staff or Huff
or more Yugasuke Mo Yugazuk who are really good shooters. Right,
(35:23):
you want to take your chances there? Or do you
want to put the bigs on an island and say,
you know what, go ahead, If Harlan Obioha can get
you twenty five or twenty seven, hats off and we'll
take our chances. We'll give you twos and not get
beat with threes. Well, Wheeling did that, and their perimeter
defense I thought did a nice job of getting up
into West Virginia and not leaving. They did not deviate.
(35:43):
They left the big guys alone. And if you're gonna score,
you're gonna score. So I thought that was worthwhile to
get a look like that, and worthwhile for the team
and Eagle staff and honor to be missing threes, but
still have to live up to what Ross always preaches about,
don't be hanging your head, don't let your game be
affected by misshots. Still perform and put the game in perspective.
And I thought they did that.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
So, Brad, is that a harbinger of what you're gonna see?
Speaker 3 (36:05):
This year's teams are going to say, don't let these
guys on the perimeter beat you. And if somebody does inside,
so be it. But just these are the guys you
got to stop.
Speaker 4 (36:12):
That's what I would do, because the other part of
that is the big twelve guys are going to bring
more size and athleticism into the post than what Wheeling
was able to offer. So that's what I would do,
is make make their bigs beat you. Now that said,
Ross also didn't have the full playbook installed. Or run
everything he has offensively. So there's gonna be some things
in games that count on your record that they'll be
able to free up some looks from shooters. And here's
(36:34):
the thing, Tony you mentioned it, Honored didn't shoot it
extremely well, still made two threes in the game, right,
and we're looking at going Honor didn't have very any game,
still hit two threes. So this team's gonna make shots.
They just didn't last night. They found another way to
win the game, and defense was really good. And that's
what's gonna win West forvig any of these games. Each
and every night. They're going to have to play defense.
(36:55):
On the nights when it makes a lot of shots,
you're gonna run somebody out of the building. I've said
that before, but each night you're going to have to
play defense to hang in there, and I thought this
team did it. In fact, in talking to the Wheeling
folks after the game, they were really impressed with how
quickly the windows closed when they were China. They felt
they had some plays where they were able to backcut
(37:16):
or get cuts to the basket and in regular action
for them, those passes are there, and instead West Virginia
recovered nicely and knocked him away. We saw Chance Moore
do that a couple of times. His guy got by him.
His athleticism and link able to close and block shot.
So defense is still going to be the main thing here.
A couple notes you mentioned Forsyth. He was excellent off
the bench. He was an elite shooter out of high school.
(37:37):
He showed why knocking down the three threes. He will
play an important role. I think in these early season
games when Chance Moore has to sit for the first
five no Jackson Field, so that rotation is shorter, smaller,
You're probably going to see Forsyth a little bit early.
Emir Jenkins. Remember with Jenkins the freshman point guard, still
learning his way here at this level of basketball. He
just got here a couple months ago this time in juniors.
(38:00):
You just planning on going back to high school for
another year. Reclassified. He's here. But he showed some flashes,
led the team and assists. Had that beautiful inside dish
when he went baseline, looked across to the baseline, threw
it back underneath for a finish. He also added four rebounds.
That's going to be important as well. Keeping teams off
the offensive glass, your point guards in there grabbing four rebounds.
(38:22):
That helps. DJ Thomas continues, he just needs minutes, will
keep getting better and better. The true freshman from the
Dallas area. Six points, five rebounds, Tony. If I told
you right now DJ Thomas has given you six points
and five rebounds every night, you take it right now.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
Yet, I'd sign the document right now.
Speaker 4 (38:37):
It's going to get harder in Big twelve play. But
he just needs to keep playing. He's going to get
valuable minutes. Why Jackson Fields is rehabbing from his injury.
The one thing I thought you need to clean up
coming out of that game that Russell addressed this week.
He had eleven live ball turnovers in that game, So
that's going to be a problem hop in Big twelve play.
If that were to happen in a Big twelve game,
(38:57):
you only had four total turnovers against me Maryland, that
jumped to eleven just of the live ball variety against Wheeling,
and Wheeling was effective in turning those into points. One
point three points per possession off the live ball turnovers.
To give you some context, if you average one point
three points per possession over the course of a season,
you would have been second nationally in that category in
(39:18):
Division one last year. Compare that to Wheeling just point
six points per possession off a misshot by West Virginia,
and you can see how devastating live ball turnovers are.
We talk about that every year you get out in transition.
Wheeling likes to run, they got numbers and they were
good at finishing. When West Virginia was able to get
back with its transition defense and force the Cardinals into
(39:38):
running their offense, that defense was able to come through.
So we'll talk about that maybe every show this year,
live ball turnovers versus what the points per possession is
off just a regular misshot.
Speaker 1 (39:49):
Give a shout out to the whole Wheeling team and
to coach Chris Richardson. They were well coached, very well coaching.
We've seen teams come in here and you could just
like it's a circus show, and those guys were well coached.
They didn't back down, They stuck their face in there.
I'd be surprised if they don't win some games. And
those poor buddies over there. Scholarship wise, you know, everyone
always screams like you know, how many scholarships, how much
(40:11):
collective money? Ohio State has compared to everybody else, Like
put that in the NEC and Wheeling is like absolutely
at the very bottom as far as scholarships go.
Speaker 4 (40:20):
They're doing more with less, Oh my gosh. And I
give them credit if they play that hard each night. Yeah,
they will cause some problems in that league, which is
an excellent basketball league. But well, coaching and the other thing.
They didn't run a lot of their stuff either, so
they will. They're allowed to get better too throughout the
coach he or so. They were coming in with a
limited offensive arsenal as well. But I thought they accorded
(40:40):
themselves very well and gave West Virginia what was a
good look and an exhibition game. And that's a win
win all around. The ability to be able to help
a school in state to come down and get a
lifetime experience for not only those players, but for coach Richardson,
who's a West Virginia grad and a long time Mountaineer fan.
For him to be able to coach on that, for
that was just a neat neat night all the way around.
Speaker 1 (40:59):
For teams. Now they start to count. Now they're gonna
put the hyphen in the middle the ones you win,
they put on the left. The ones you lose they
put on the right. It'll be the Mountaineers against the Mountaineers.
Mount Saint Mary's coming in a week from Tuesday, and
off we go.
Speaker 2 (41:14):
So how was the radio broadcast team? Were you guys
in mid season? Former? Did you have some rusts you
had to shake off?
Speaker 1 (41:20):
Felt good about it? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (41:21):
I thought we were pretty good, weren't we.
Speaker 1 (41:22):
Yeah? Got these new noise canceling headphones. Oh really? Yeah,
which you're nice? Did you notice it? Did you notice? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (41:29):
They were nice.
Speaker 1 (41:30):
They're night too, They're light, but you don't hear. I
mean it takes away a lot of that ambient crowd,
which is really neat.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
Did you take crowd noise?
Speaker 1 (41:36):
Get a crowd noise basketball? You don't take it because
it's just so much on top of you. You can't.
You don't need it. Yeah, you don't need it. Three
guys brought to us by what Three guys brought to
us by Comac's business systems. They're leading a one company
charge in the world to get rid of all those stupid,
big dumb five gallon water bottles and your break rooms

Speaker 2 (41:59):
Floor, more than five, aren't they?
Speaker 1 (42:01):
Those big ones are five. I think they are. They
bigger twenty. Whatever you know of those ones are you
got to go.
Speaker 2 (42:07):
It's more than book boo boo bottle.
Speaker 1 (42:09):
And you spill it on the floor and you get
all bummed out. You don't need to do that. Comax

Comas w V dot Com. Let's do textual healing. He
might be right. Five gallons.
Speaker 2 (42:47):
Yeah, I thought it was more than that.
Speaker 1 (42:48):
Yeah, I think I understand what you're saying. I thought
they might be more too.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
Yeah, five gallon.
Speaker 1 (42:52):
You're right, just had a flashback textual healing. It was
by episode eight hundred. You can check in with us
at your convenience. Just send us a text three oh
four four O four forty eighty three, three oh four
four o four forty eighty three. I remember, I just
(43:13):
had this memory. You know those big five gallon bottles.
We used to have those at our house. We would
get our water through the big but they were glass,
oh solid glass, and then.
Speaker 4 (43:25):
Like some added pressure putting that thing in turn it
upside down.
Speaker 1 (43:27):
In our basement, I had a BB gun and I
would put one. I put a five gallon empty bottle
at the end of the at the end of the basement,
had my BB gun and I would just fill I
just bang it, bang it, bang it. It would like
little you know, a little crack, little crack, little crack,
little crack, little clock and to the point where you
finally hit it with that last one and it just goes.
Speaker 3 (43:49):
It's a wonder, didn't Yeah, Probably it's a wonder that
in ricochet off and take your eye out could have.
Speaker 1 (43:55):
Those are the things that you work against. I mean,
between that and the old wrist rockets, sling shot, a
lot of things gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (44:03):
You don't see those anymore, do you, Like, you can't
just go buy a slingshot anymore, can you.
Speaker 1 (44:08):
No?
Speaker 3 (44:08):
You used to see it like you go into your
kid you go into a store like, oh, it goes
a slingshot section.
Speaker 2 (44:14):
Do you know, uh, I get a shot?
Speaker 1 (44:16):
Are you guys familiar with the PVC You guys familiar
with the PVC pipe cannons where you take PVC pipe
and you put it together in segments and then you
put a valve on it, and you put a little
hole and you put lighter fluid in it, and then
you'll wave it to get the fumes inside the thing.
It's probably like four feet long. Then you put it,
you put a potato, You put a potato in the
(44:38):
bottom of it, and then you light the thing and
it absolutely it goes like two hundred and sixty.
Speaker 2 (44:45):
Miles an hour for about three miles. So one, what
kind of childhood did you have?
Speaker 1 (44:51):
Oh? It was great. It was a wonderful, wonderful childhood.
Wonderful childhood.
Speaker 2 (44:58):
We should we should do that one of our events.
Speaker 4 (45:01):
Uh heck, any kids listening, don't do that?
Speaker 1 (45:04):
Yeah? Good, we'll drive this at home. All right, Here
we go from textall healing. We had a lot of
fun at the food court this week, Yes, we did.
It was it was intimate. It was great. Senia. This
one starts off. This is John from Southwest Florida. He said, Hey,
it was great scene you know you guys today and
we just took a series of photos basically John and
(45:26):
his daughter, who took our official tour of WV once
get into medicine there from down to Floridare's hobby with
his Harley Davidson cool black jacket. And then there were
other times that John came around during the course of
the week. There he is with homeless Homeless Dave in
the middle and John.
Speaker 4 (45:44):
Bull Rush Black. Three guys had on John.
Speaker 1 (45:47):
And then later in the later in the day at
the basketball event there's John again with the senator and
then why not, we're just going to finish a hit
for the cycle there I am at the basketball eval John,
so John John and his young Yeah, his daughter was.
Speaker 2 (46:04):
We talked to her.
Speaker 3 (46:04):
I kind of was doing a little recruiting there because
she wants to get into the medical field, right. I said,
there's a lot of we have a wonderful medical school here,
and she came away said, you know, I'm kind of interested.
Speaker 1 (46:13):
She's got a lot of big boys schools that I
talked to her, like a lot of schools all over
the Literally she wants to Yeah, very smart, very smart. Uh,
here's a text. Rate my plate. Please revkevs brisket on
grateful bread sour dough with bacon, egg and cheese and
a side of fried taters. Washed it all down with
some game day grind the full three guys tailgate tour
for homecoming. That's a I'll give you a ten.
Speaker 4 (46:34):
Out of a thousand.
Speaker 2 (46:36):
Yeah, that's a nice plate.
Speaker 1 (46:38):
First time text her. I'm a longtime listener, Cade from
Boone County. I just wanted to see if Hoppy has
any information on who it was that Pat McAfee was
referencing on game day when he said he had to
step up because a massive donor quit donating. Should this
be a concern going forward for WVU fans?
Speaker 2 (46:57):
I don't know. I heard about that.
Speaker 3 (46:58):
I got some texts about that, and I don't know
who I didn't hear about. I didn't hear it. I
only heard about it. I don't know who he was referencing.
Speaker 1 (47:06):
Craig I would say, don't lose any sleepover it.
Speaker 4 (47:07):
Don't be concerned.
Speaker 1 (47:09):
Don't you worry about a thing. Charlie from mid Lothian, Oh,
he is around. I was catching up on some recent podcasts.
I was surprised to learn at the end of episode
six sixty six that you said you missed me despite
all the millions of dollars. Brad would interject unconfirmed that
I and others have saved using maximum Kroger fuel points.
I am still a free man. I can't believe that
(47:29):
official did not call interference when Cam Vaughan got mugged
near the goal line on the far side of the field.
I'm looking forward to basketball season and you guys just
might see me in Charleston on the sixth of December
when West Virginia plays the Wake Forests.
Speaker 4 (47:44):
Okay, very nice, we'll look forward to it.
Speaker 1 (47:45):
By the way, I've been accused a few times on
this show of maybe jumping out a little bit ahead. Yes,
we need to do something at the Charleston West Virginia event,
and we need to do something at the Charleston South
Carolina event. I still have events. We need to have events.
I'm just saying that we need to do something. We
gotta get that done. So if you're a listener, we're
(48:07):
gonna do something in Charleston the night before the game.
If you're in Charleston, South Carolina, we're gonna do something
that Saturday, which is the off day of the tournament.
The world champion Mountaineers play Friday Sunday. We're gonna do
something Saturday. You think seafood could be involved in that?
Down there? I would think it could be kind of
nice fad from York, Pennsylvania. It says something about our
(48:28):
fan base that even with only two wins this season,
we had a near capacity at this game.
Speaker 2 (48:33):
Started out near capacity, thinned out.
Speaker 1 (48:35):
But well, yeah, it does. It does text a hello,
three guys. I have to say, despite how the season
has gone, I'm happy Rich is back. Program never really
recovered when he left. In my opinion, we've settled for
slightly above mediocre for a long time, more than on time.
I'm willing College fans in general are good at setting
expectations way too early in a season and then getting
worked up when it doesn't go the way they pictured.
(48:57):
This is a new program being built from the ground up,
going to take time. Ran his proved he knows what
he's doing. I got no reason to doubt. I said,
when West Virginia be Pitt that was good enough for me,
and I don't care how the rest of the season
goes now. I stand by that. Ethan York, Pennsylvania. Good morning, Jeff,
Scott depot my two cents. First, I'll say I was
surprised with the turnout for the game. Stadium filled up
(49:19):
nice in the first half, but once you get halftime,
every stoppage more and more people file up the stairs.
I've got no idea why everyone is always so quick
to leave. We only get six home games. Good bounce
back game. I wish the offense would have gotten another
chance at the end of the game. They had the momentum.
Scottie Fox played well. Nice to see a QB to
play a game and not have the musical chairs. Defense
(49:39):
really bounced looked back like early season. Let's just say,
let's just hope we can build on this, get another
couple of wins. How about doug On Houston, Oh, Willy.
Speaker 4 (49:49):
Fritz year two for Willie Fritz first game this year
that only one quarterback played in the game.
Speaker 2 (49:57):
Yeah, this is really good there too.
Speaker 4 (50:01):
Figured when they made that coaching change that would be
they would get good. That's that's a problem down there.
A lot of talent, guy that really knows what he's doing.
Wins starting year two on that was a that was
a good move by them.
Speaker 2 (50:11):
Correct, he might get hired away. There's like sixteen jobs open.
Speaker 1 (50:15):
I still don't understand why we got to go there
twice before they come here. Really, yeah, we've already played
there once. They haven't yet. Oftentimes you hear the phrase, hey,
you don't got to be a rocket scientist to know that, right,
People use that statement. Yeah, yeah, Well guess what at
the food court this week? Oh yeah, there was a
rocket scientist there, Ken the rocket Scientist. A couple of
(50:39):
pictures with him. If you ever want to know what
a rocket scientist looks like, well, heck you got to
go to Can. Got to go to Can. He's got these.
Ken's got a black sweatshirt on with hoppy and black
sweatshirt with hoppy.
Speaker 3 (50:57):
We talked to him because I once I found out
that he worked there, had worked there. Yeah, then I
talked to him at Link the.
Speaker 1 (51:06):
Rocket scientist he got he's got a good information.
Speaker 2 (51:10):
Oh it was a fascinating They build you know, they
employ there at that rocket factory where they build largely
motors for rockets. Yeah, about two thousand people there.
Speaker 1 (51:21):
We Ken there, rocket scientists.
Speaker 4 (51:26):
It was great. I ended up talking to him for
quite a while. They were they were enjoyable. Yeah, they
had a good time. People who he pulled to you,
he pulled to you retired too early? Yeah he did
say that, Yeah, retired too early.
Speaker 1 (51:38):
Missed it.
Speaker 4 (51:38):
Had to get back in the consultant.
Speaker 2 (51:39):
Yeah, yeah, I guess my.
Speaker 1 (51:41):
Hop you're still working. I don't consider you retired. Yeah,
he said that the way my law needs done again. Okay,
I'll be right over. Chris and Hurricane. Three minutes to play.
We're down six, trying to get the ball back. No
fans in the stands, come on out in here, fans,
be the change you want to see. Like I said
that it was. It was a polarizing series on the text.
Speaker 2 (52:01):
But the crowd was that those who were there were
into it very much.
Speaker 1 (52:05):
So Robin and Cumberland. I've never seen more literal examples
of the ball not bouncing your way. We're due for
some breaks soon, let's go.
Speaker 4 (52:13):
Certainly did not get a bounce in that wild how
that works when you're struggling to find wins, you just
don't get the bounces. When it's why they say turnover luck.
So there's a lot of luck involved in turnovers. It
just didn't bounce. Now, remember though, to be fair, what
West Virginia fumble three times? Yeah, and lucky Scotty got
one back too.
Speaker 2 (52:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (52:30):
It was close. So there is that, yes, but I
get what the Texters saying, like that one, that last one.
Karaco reacted as quickly as you can react to it,
and it just it did not fall in his hands.
Speaker 1 (52:41):
That stupid thing to unbounce. That obloc ball bounces weird ways.
Jim and Clarksburg. I'm not one for moral victories, but
that was a moral victory. Brad will give some stats,
he'll tell us we should have won. Scotty Fox played great.
Texter games started with three straight three and outs for
West Virginia, three straight TCU possessions beginning in West Virginia Territory.
I thought, here we go again. But the team settled,
(53:03):
played well. That is the team I wanted to see
all year. Nice game for Scottie. He looked great.
Speaker 2 (53:09):
It did start out looking grim.
Speaker 3 (53:12):
I did that first quarter until you were obsessing over
that appropriately about TCU beginning drives in West Virginia Territory.
West Virginia three and out, I mean, look, it looked
really bad very early.
Speaker 1 (53:24):
You think I mentioned it too much.
Speaker 2 (53:25):
No, I think you emphasized it just enough. Which was
I mean?
Speaker 3 (53:28):
That was the story of that first quarter? Was their
their field position?
Speaker 1 (53:33):
Crazy Texter. Here's another one for the always of West
Virginia connection. Just got back from the Smoky Mountains. While there,
we enjoyed some New Haven style pizza from West by
God Coal fired Pizza. Look at that place, got the
West Virginia logo there, all right? I tried the tomato pie.
Delicious must stop if you're in the area, live music acts,
(53:55):
throwing great food, supporting fellow mountaineers. That looks good right there.
Most people might go it. I can't eat that, but
like that would be pretty good? Pretty good, I think.
Next tex says, I have two thoughts. Scottie Fox played
pretty good, as Dana would say, for a true freshman
in his second collegiate start. Hey Dana, how did you think?
(54:16):
Scotty Fox? Well? Pretty good? Which I'm sure has been discussed.
I want to say that I remember a time when
West Virginia fans would will the team to a win
with their energy when the team seem flat. Maybe I'm mistaken,
But if I'm not, then maybe just maybe something magical
can start to the end of the year and start
traction for next year. Anyway, if football that played, if
(54:37):
the football team that played in the second half shows
up for the rest of the year, Scottie Fox growing,
we may pull off one more miracle. Sorry for the
long text text Grant and Redhouse.
Speaker 2 (54:46):
It's amazing how much better you feel today than a
week ago.
Speaker 1 (54:50):
Today. Yeah, when you compete, when you're swinging week to
week business.
Speaker 3 (54:56):
Okay, it's weak to week, but we'd had a bad
stretch of weeks, I know. But it's also don't get excited. Well,
it was a great week. Now you got to turn around.
You're a two touchdown underdog at Houston again, So now
you got to show here's where you build, here's where
you try and stack. That was again, as we said,
a light year's difference from where we've been. Now do
it on the road.
Speaker 4 (55:16):
Now, pack up, go on the road against a team
that's having a great year and put another performance back
to back defensively and offensively. That's next.
Speaker 1 (55:23):
Thanks to the U three for taking time to speak
with our daughter Ray who's home on leave from the Navy.
We're really very proud of hers all. She's accomplished tough
having her away, not seen her for long periods of time.
Your genuine interest in her navy career and words of
gratitude made her feel very special.
Speaker 2 (55:40):
It's great to meet. She was fantastic from Joe and Holly.
Speaker 1 (55:43):
Yeah there. We do not have a picture of that
due to security reasons.
Speaker 2 (55:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (55:47):
They stayed a long time there with us.
Speaker 2 (55:49):
Oh yeah, we were there.
Speaker 4 (55:51):
They were there. They left only shortly before I did,
and I stayed till we shut it down. They were there,
So thank you Joe, Holly and Saturday.
Speaker 1 (55:57):
They got land up there in Wisconsin, don't they. They do
a lot of acreage.
Speaker 4 (56:01):
Question about the minimal rights though.
Speaker 2 (56:03):
Yeah, we should connect her with.
Speaker 1 (56:07):
Who's another spy friend, Oliver Straw's dad. Yeah, they probably
worked together.
Speaker 2 (56:11):
They probably did, probably got each other's you know.
Speaker 1 (56:14):
They got digits, ENCRYPTI phone. They don't perreopolis, Phil. We
showed some fight tonight, got some positives to build on.
Scotty looked good. Finally got over two hundi on total offense.
Let's keep getting better. The H and B refs on
the TCU sideline killed us tonight. No pass interference on
CAM and the offensive pass interference miss late they missed
(56:34):
a hole that would have moved TCU out of field
goal range. Anyway, let's go shock the koops. Hey, what
is this?
Speaker 3 (56:41):
What is with the ref and the coin toss? What
referencing hoover By's first name?
Speaker 1 (56:48):
That was?
Speaker 2 (56:48):
That was like a b omen, wasn't it.
Speaker 3 (56:50):
I Mean they got more penalties in West Virginia that
thought it was weird where he called him Josh.
Speaker 1 (56:54):
They're getting that. They're getting that more. You've seen it
more and more. Like I watched him during warm was
and he was having the long conversation with him.
Speaker 4 (57:02):
Did you hear that brain No, I missed that.
Speaker 2 (57:05):
You had the money? Yeah.
Speaker 1 (57:06):
I mean like Kevin Maher, who's he's big boy ref.
I mean has real big games. I mean he just said, like, okay,
Josh a your like you know, like you're sitting down
at the table. But they'll do that. I mean I've
seen That's not the first time I've seen that, because
those referees are the guy that really they're protecting the
quarterback throughout the course of the day. They're the ones that.
Speaker 4 (57:24):
You know, I mean it's a professional deal. I mean
those NBA refs do that upon review. Yeah, right, they'll
give you. They'll give you by the name.
Speaker 1 (57:32):
Yeah. Texter says, I believe. I doesn't say I believe,
He says, I have two comments I'd like to make
as I would believe rich Rod would agree. If not
feeling good about this loss, this one at least seems
to give some encouraging about Scotty. The receivers or defense
played much better running the ball. Different issue. Hopefully improvement continues.
(57:52):
Remainder will tell us if this is a fluke or
we are improving. And then he went on to ask
about the Pat McAfee deal in regard to the out Again, folks,
I wouldn't make a whole lot out of that. There's
no one at WVU that's perspiring or losing sleep over that,
so I wouldn't stress that out. Kevin and Princeton, We
(58:17):
as fans need to look at some facts. These are
not advanced senator powered stats by any stretch, but by
the time it is all said and done, it's possible.
West Virginia this season will play ten Bowl eligible teams.
Kansas and UCF are two wins away, Arizona State and
Ohio are one away. TCU b Yu Pitt Houston, Texas Tech.
(58:38):
You to already have six plus wins. Super tough schedule
for anyone, much less a piece together team suffering major
injuries under a first year coach. I was always I
love the show.
Speaker 4 (58:48):
It's interesting. As much as the non conference schedule got
itself righted again, the Big Twelve continues to be a
tough league. I know there's some in the national media
that continue to ignore the league, and there's some agendas
out there nationally may not a ignoring the football league
here West Virginia. If you go tho SAGRAE ratings right now,
just did Hopy right in this moment, eighteenth right now
in scheduled rank. So yeah, Big Big twelve again, good league.
(59:10):
It's just in despite what some may say, Tony, the.
Speaker 3 (59:12):
Big twelve is a good league. And you're getting at
as you figured you would get this time. You're some cannibalization,
you know. Iowa State now is three losses byu undefeated.
Texas Tech is at one walls, but now down to
their third string quarter.
Speaker 4 (59:26):
I was just going to say, Will Hammond, who looked
really good in winning that game at Utah when Baron
Morton went out. It goes down with an acl that's
a massive look. Now there's some that think there's a
lot that think Baron Morton is back this week, but yeah,
down to their third quarterback there. That's not not easy.
As West Virginia has.
Speaker 1 (59:42):
Said three guys, I often say that before organizations become
good or even great, they must be consistent in their performance.
I have nowhere nearing crowning the twenty five team as
world's champions yet, but what I saw last night was consistency.
Consistently moving the ball, achieving first downs, forcing opponents to
fourth down, consistently fighting, not letting it down or loafing.
(01:00:03):
Great to see some new young faces in the game
making an impact. All continues to give me hope for
the future. I am not willing to responsibly bet that
another victory is possible, but I think it is in
the realm of the possible if we can have another
consistent performance like last night. Still keeping the faith along
the banks of the Canal Falls signed by Glenn from
(01:00:24):
Glenn Ferris.
Speaker 2 (01:00:25):
I'm hearing a theme, Tony.
Speaker 1 (01:00:26):
Yeah, Texas. It was wonderful to finally meet Happy. Thank
you for the visit. Rick was happy to chat with
Brad again. There's a pick of all of us on
Brad's phone if you didn't mind sharing it with us.
And it was a pleasure to chat with Gigi. Very
sweet girl. Signy turn your mic on? Signed by Rick,
(01:00:48):
Signed by Rick and Tara from Beckley Darby. Yeah. I
had a wonderful visit and chatted him up there their senator.
Speaker 4 (01:00:59):
It was crazy how time passes, guys. They Rick was
telling me, we and I vividly remember doing this. Excuse me.
The last time they were up, Tara's wife was was unavailable,
or maybe it's Tara was unavailable, so he facetimed her
and that was the big questions at Tara's Tara, It's
not Tarat's Tara. So now I've messed it up and
I don't know which ones to go. Hey tea, but
(01:01:20):
they said that was I thought that was last season.
I so it was multiple years ago, Hoppy, bit that's
what happens.
Speaker 1 (01:01:24):
They've been back.
Speaker 4 (01:01:25):
It was great to see them. Thanks for coming back.
Speaker 2 (01:01:27):
I was talking to Rick and he said, Hoppy, I've
been listening to you.
Speaker 3 (01:01:30):
Himself was a little boy. I said, what, man, here's
a how old are you you?
Speaker 2 (01:01:34):
Forty five? You got great hero? Right, little boy, that's
what but that's what happens anymore. But they were a
lot of fun. It was great visiting.
Speaker 1 (01:01:40):
They were great. Hey guys, we had a great uh. Oh,
by the way, I want to jump something in here. Yeah,
you know Buffalo Wild Wings. Right, do you know what
they've been doing over the last month. I want to
encourage people to do this. You can go into Buffalo
Wild Wings. Right. You need to help me here because
I want to know is this just the morgan Town
Own stores or is this across the It's probably just
(01:02:02):
the Morgantown stores. You go in, you buy a five
dollars gift card and you get get six wings. You
get a five dollars gift card and you get six wings. Right,
they've been doing that this month. It ends at the
end of this month in October. And you know what,
hoppy what they have already raised five thousand dollars and
(01:02:25):
they're donating that all to Kevin kine Revkev's source to
help feed the kids in this area.
Speaker 4 (01:02:33):
So yeah, So the two Morgantown locations Ruffalo Wild Wings.
Speaker 1 (01:02:37):
You do that.
Speaker 4 (01:02:38):
You buy the card through October thirty first, redeem it
for the wings all through November. It's the redemption process.
So yeah, thanks to Buffalo Wild Wins for helping out
our guy Rev keV.
Speaker 1 (01:02:47):
Carry's involved in that over at Buffalo Wild Wings. So
you only have to the end of this month. You pay,
you get five, you get six wings, and the money
goes to the source. Really nice from Buffalo Wild Wings.
Let me see here, I don't want to miss anything.
Hey guys, great time at the food court. This was
our five year old Cooper's very first game and he
loved meeting Hoppy and Brad. Thanks Doug from Tampa via
(01:03:10):
Clark County. There's there's there's a little guy right there.
Speaker 3 (01:03:13):
This is if you look at this picture, there's Doug
and Doug's little boy, and then that's Johnny. That's Johnny
Hardesty in the gray. I've known Johnny Hardesty since we
were six years old.
Speaker 1 (01:03:26):
Holy cow. How about that.
Speaker 3 (01:03:28):
Clark County is right next to It's in Virginia, but
it's right next to where I grew up. I mean
we literally grew up a couple miles from each other.
And he's friends with a couple other friends. So it
was nice to see Johnny Hardesty hadn't seen him well.
I had been in touch with him.
Speaker 1 (01:03:40):
But we go back since first grade.
Speaker 2 (01:03:43):
Yeah, well different school, but that long.
Speaker 4 (01:03:46):
There's Coop. Coop got right in the picture. What Doug
and I?
Speaker 1 (01:03:48):
It was his first game? He did great. Yeah, that's awesome.
There are three guys and Hoppy Cube. I'm I am
a very faithful fan, having listened to every one of
the six hundred and sixty seven plus episodes multiple times,
but this is only the second time that I've texted.
Our parents were raised in Morgantown. My grandfather, Edward Campbell,
(01:04:10):
was caretaker at the Oak Grove Cemetery southern end of
High Street. How do you just deliver right down the
street from exactly for many decades. On a recent visit,
my eldest brother showed me where their old house used
to be. I was delighted to discover that myleon Pushgard
and his wife have their final resting place only a
few feet away from the site where our mother and
her siblings were raised. Our paternal grandfather, John Anderson Senior,
(01:04:34):
also worked for the Army Corps of Engineers Locks ten
and twelve on the Monongahela River. Not only not that
I needed anything further to feel strong, affinity of West Virginia.
But now I feel even closer than ever to the West.
By God legacy, I'm so privileged to share. Please share
a shout out with the Campbell and Anderson clans, pillars of
the Morgantown community for the past century. Morgantown's the greatest
(01:04:57):
small hometown anywhere, sewn by JD. Anderson. Keep talking football,
But rookie Javon Small scored sixteen last night and was impressive,
defense great, and I say he's coming out of his
shell more comfortable with this team. I'll send this fyi
picks here of Javon being interviewed at the conclusion of
(01:05:18):
the game. How about that man a year ago he
hadn't even bounced the ball yet in a real game
for West Virginia. And a year later, my guy is
in the National Basketball Association and he puts up double figures.
Speaker 4 (01:05:31):
It's playing an important role. Opening night played nineteen minutes,
was positive plus six on the plus minus. And then
he comes back in game two there as they're mentioning,
and was scoring along it. And that's a guy hop
on a two way contract. So Memphis has a nice situation.
If you remember Jevon Carter got the benefit of this.
Their G League team is right there in Memphis, Okay,
so you can go both places and play. Man, he's
right out of the game with the big club early.
(01:05:52):
I mean they're counting on him early to get in
there and play. So no surprise, right, you watched him
last year. That dude looked like an NBA player every
step of the way last year for West Virginia, you
know when you see it, right, Yes, And he was
so happy to see him in there and great for
the West Virginia basketball brand.
Speaker 1 (01:06:08):
You remember, we went to an NBA game last year.
We went and saw the Rockets and we're sitting there
and we're looking down the floor when we went like,
Jamon Small can play here, Like there's no way that
he can't come off the bench and play with these guys.
Speaker 4 (01:06:21):
Sure didn't Utah too. We were all over the NBA
s SEM last year.
Speaker 1 (01:06:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:06:24):
Yeah, looked like an NBA player, is an NBA player
and is now playing in the NBA.
Speaker 2 (01:06:28):
Huh.
Speaker 1 (01:06:28):
Yeah, that did terrific good for him last one. Three guys,
I've listened to the six hundred and sixty seven episodes
and I still cannot bring myself to listen to the
episode after the twenty twenty two brawl. I've never heard
Brad apologize to the listeners before spreads on stats. We
all got a big chuckle out of that as we
headed to the game Saturday. Keep up the good work,
Craig in Oakmont.
Speaker 4 (01:06:49):
I know, Craig. Sometimes they've hurt this year. Sometimes the
numbers of heh.
Speaker 1 (01:06:52):
Yeah, Craig, next time you come in for a game,
if you're an Oakmont, go to that Oakmont bakery. Bring
me that canol cake.
Speaker 4 (01:07:00):
Well, he's not door dash, he just ordering up.
Speaker 2 (01:07:06):
I'll tell you. You have to tell you what, Tony,
you can do that.
Speaker 3 (01:07:09):
Why don't you go ahead and give your credit card
information right now? Get your number, give me security code
on the back that throws three numbers, give us.
Speaker 4 (01:07:16):
And don't don't threaten him. He has done that with
a local. Won't name the place, but he has done
that and spend about ten x what it costs to
go get one to have it brought to his house.
Speaker 3 (01:07:26):
So he will.
Speaker 4 (01:07:28):
Yeah, he'll line umal, is that right? I would have
cost don't care need one right now? One treat don't
cost me eighty three dollars to I go ahead and
bring that over.
Speaker 2 (01:07:37):
That's true.
Speaker 1 (01:07:38):
He went did do that, did that once?
Speaker 2 (01:07:42):
What was that? You want to say?
Speaker 4 (01:07:45):
It was a treat. It was a nice treat after dinner.
Well lined up ordered. It cost him one hundred and
thirty two dollars for one of them. So he wanted
to sit there and watch pirate videos on the back porch,
not have to get up and drive down the three
minutes to get it.
Speaker 1 (01:07:59):
That does.
Speaker 2 (01:08:00):
I like him?
Speaker 1 (01:08:00):
That is. That'll be enough of that. Move on. We'll
be back on Thursday to preview West Virginia and the
Houston Cougars. Still don't understand why we got to go
there twice before they come to our place.
Speaker 4 (01:08:17):
Roll down, steal one. They're due for a loss. They
are dude, lineup, Scotty Fox, go for four bills. We
will talk about Thursday, but I am I am interested
to watch Rich's game planning. Now moving forward, you can
throw the football. You've got an elite receiver in cam
vaon does he have to kind of go back to
a Sean Kingwoody Danceler esque. We're gonna throw it more
than we run it here?
Speaker 1 (01:08:37):
