(00:58):
One Podcast. Today's hot topic isthe pros and cons of social media censorship.
This is really a hot button issuefor a lot of people, and
I can understand it because we alltypically use social media. We say what's

(01:18):
on our mind, what we're feeling, what we've read, what we've seen,
and everything on the sun. Now, the question is with social media
censorship, does it violate any humanrights and freedoms? So let's dive in

(01:38):
what are the pros and cons? Now? Before we get to that,
what is social media censorship? Whatdoes that mean it is or it refers
to the practice of restricting or deletingcontent on social media platforms. So here

(02:00):
are some of the potential pros andcons associated with this practice. We're gonna
start with the pros. The prosor social media censorship. One. Protecting
users. Censorship can help protect usersfrom harmful content such as hate speech,

(02:22):
cyber bullying, and harassment. Nowwith that, the key is finding the
balance, not the leading helpful contentand speeches, but get getting rid of
that which promotes hate and violence andthose sort of things. Two. Reducing

(02:46):
misinformation. Censorship can combat the spreadof false information and prevent the potential harm
it may cause. Then we knowsome people we'll get on social media and
they post things that are not true. They're misleading information. It's not even

(03:08):
it's not fact based. So wehave to be careful there on our own.
But censorship is trying to help dealwith that because we don't need to
everybody running around with the wrong information. So that's a real issue there.
Three. Maintaining public safety by censoringcertain content social media platforms can help prevent

(03:35):
a bunch of drama and or harmfulor dangerous information that could incite violence.
Or illegal activities. Okay, protectingthe community, especially children. I get
that. For regulating harmful content, censorship can help in moderating or removing content

(04:00):
that promotes violence, terrorism, selfharm, and or self form. Making
online space is safer for everyone.Everyone who has been using social media knows.
That's an up and down sliding scale, depending on the social media platforms
and what they deem and see fitas harmful. Which sometimes it can be

(04:27):
a issue because sometimes what they deletedoes not actually in fact be harmful,
just something they think nobody should know. But I'll move on. Five.
Compliance with laws and regulation. Censorshipallows social media platforms to comply with local

(04:48):
laws and regulations, ensuring they donot facilitate or promote illegal activities. Now,
as an example with this, wecan use about the election. There
was a lot of harmful information upthere being promoted. Honestly, that caused

(05:14):
a lot of issues that was notaddressed. But let go on, and
then we had the January sixth insurrection. So that's just one example. So
what are the cons of social mediacensorship? One, which is the main

(05:36):
one freedom of speech concerns. Now, critics argue that censorship on social media
platforms can infringe upon user's freedom ofspeech rights, limiting open dialogue and expression.
Now, that's cool and everything, but as I stated before, or

(06:00):
some things or throw over into theharmful category and they don't belong there,
that is an infringement. Two biasand selective enforcement. Now that's what I've
been speaking on all through this. There is a concern that censorship may be
selectively applied based on subjective subjective interpretationsand biases of the platform operators, potentially

(06:30):
silencing certain viewpoints and everyone's viewpoints. They want them seen, they want them
heard. There are probably other peoplewho think or have viewpoints that align with
that. So bias and selective enforcementhas been an issue. Three lack of

(06:53):
transparency. We know sometimes platforms maynot provide clear guideline or explanations for their
censorship decisions, leading to confusion andmistrust among users, which is true because
there are there's a lot of discussiononline about this, and some platforms are

(07:15):
losing people while new platforms who arenot doing these things are gaining people.
So it's kind of a flip flopsituation. There. Number four overreach and
unintended consequences. Now, some arguethat censorship policies may go too far,

(07:39):
inadvertently blocking legitimate content or stifling innovationand creativity, which that is reasonable thought
five backlash circumvention. Censorship attempts canoften be circumvented through alternative platforms or technologies,

(08:05):
leading to a game of cat andmouse and potential backlash against the platforms
implementing the censorship. That is truethat it's a lot of cat and mouse
because people want to be able tofeel free to speak with on their mind.

(08:26):
Some people actually do just on events. Some people are actually trying to
say things that are helpful and shoutout to all those with all the positive
vibes. I'm loving this and itis helpful. Keep going now. It
is important to note that this isa complex and ongoing debate and opinions on

(08:46):
social media censorship can vary widely. So back to the question at hand,
does social media censorship violate any humanrights and freedoms? Again, many argue
that social media censorship limits freedom ofspeech, which is a fundamental right in

(09:09):
democratic societies. Freedom of speech allowsindividuals to express their ideas and opinions without
fear of censorship or punishment. Sowhen social media platforms sense with certain content.
Some argue that it restricts this right. What do you all believe on

(09:31):
this now? On the other hand, it is important to note that social
media platforms are private entities and havetheir own community guidelines and policies, So
we really need to check these policieswhenever we sign up for anything or create
an account for any of these platforms. It is very important that we read

(09:54):
these god guidelines and policies. Don'tjust accept it click steps so you can
hurry up and jump right in.Definitely read the guidelines and policies. These
guidelines aim to create a safe andinclusive environment for their users. Platforms may

(10:16):
argue that by moderating and removing certaincontent, they are protecting their users from
misinformation, hate speech, or otherharmful content. However, again, critics
argue that determining what constitutes harmful contentcan be subjective and potentially lead to biased,

(10:39):
biased enforcement. This raises concerns aboutthe potential for these platforms to become
powerful gatekeepers of information and free expression. It's a doozy. Everybody's going back
and forth about this now. Regardingthe violation of rights and freedoms, legal

(11:01):
experts argue that social media censorship doesnot typically infringe upon constitutional rights like freedom
of speech. This is because theFirst Amendment in the United States, for
example, primarily limits government actions andsocial media platforms or private companies. So

(11:22):
that's the catch twenty two right there. But nevertheless, there have been instances
where the public perception of certain contenthas shaped legal frameworks and led to debates
about the limits of free speech onthese platforms. Let's take, for instance,
the banning of certain political figures ormovements has sparked discussions about the impact

(11:48):
of social media's content moderation on politicsand public discourse. Now I'll give another
example on that, anything dealing withrace, where there's bashing, whether there's

(12:09):
talk of enslavement or things of thatnature. Yeah, that's an issue.
Or with politicians with trying to overturnelections, or call to actions for violence,
or just politicians during election time goingback and forth, slinging dirt and

(12:39):
mud on each other. Those typeof things are really not needed. So
while social media censorship may not technicallyviolate constitutional rights and freedoms, it's impact
on free expression and the exchange ofideas is a complex and debated topping.

(13:00):
It raises questions about the role ofthese platforms in shaping public discourse and the
potential for bias and content moderation. So when we look at social media,
and this is all social media, there are things that we should use common

(13:24):
sense on and I know sometimes thatdoes not happen. Some things we can
just laugh at and go, ah, that's stupidity, that's not true.
But by the same token, thereare people who do not use reasonable thought
and just believe what's been said withoutfact checking or anything and begin to act

(13:52):
on that, and that begins theproblem. Now, we have been diving
into the profound impact of social mediacensorship on public rights and freedom, but
we have to understand social media platformshave become a significant part of our lives,

(14:13):
serving as in valuable tools for communication, information sharing, and activism as
well. However, in the recentyears, concerns about the power and responsibility
of these platforms have truly intensified. So what can we truly do about this?

(14:37):
There's always customers service, there's alwayswe can report the things that are
not okay, and we can usecommon sense and let our children out.
Okay, you can't believe everything thatis on lone because some things are just
opinion, some people's rants or evenventing, and some things are actual help

(15:05):
for information that is usable. Now. Another issue in the concentration of the
power in the hands of a fewtech companies. That's when we also need
to discuss the dominance of platforms likeFacebook, Twitter, will it's called x

(15:28):
now, and YouTube has given themsignificant control over the information landscape. Their
policies, algorithms, and moderation decisionscan heavily impact what content is visible and
accessible to the public. This concentrationof power of raisins concerned about the potential
for biased political manipulation and the creationof echo chambers, which ultimately limit the

(15:56):
free flow of ideas that strengthen ourdemocracy. See so In conclusion, the
impact of social media censorship on publicrights and freedoms is a complex and evolving
issue. We're not done with thisfor years to come. There are still

(16:18):
going to be trying to some sortof reform. While moderation policies can be
necessary to protect users, it iscrucial to strike a balance that ensures genuine
concerns are addressed without stifling free speechand public discourse. As we continue to

(16:40):
grapple with these challenges, it isvital to foster transparency, promote diverse perspectives,
and create mechanisms for accountability to safeguardthe rights and freedoms of all individuals
in the digital age. Now,what are the rights and freedoms? These

(17:07):
are some of the rights and freedomsthat are essential to maintaining a fair and
just society. Rights and freedoms playa crucial role in the framework of a
democracy, allowing individuals to live withdignity, express themselves freely, and participate
in the decision making processes that affecttheir lives. These rights and freedoms are

(17:30):
often enshrined in constitutional or legal documentsand vary from country to country. However,
there are some fundamental rights and freedomsthat are universally recognized and are considered
fundamental to human rights. Now.One of the most fundamental rights in the

(17:55):
in the right to life, whichencompasses the right to be protected from violence
and arbitrary deprivation of life. Everyindividual has the right to live in a
safe and secure environment. Freedom ofexpression is another important right that allows individuals
to express their opinions, thoughts, and ideas without fear of retribution or censorship.

(18:23):
This write encompasses various forms of expressionsuch as speech, writing, art,
and the press. It ensures thatindividuals have the freedom to share their
thoughts and engage in open dialogue. Now, another one is the rights of

(18:44):
privacy. Is also essential in today'sdigital age and includes the freedom from surveillance,
intrusion, and interference into one's personallife. It protects an individual's personal
information, communication, and activities fromunwanted intrusion. Now, these three rights,

(19:12):
someone somewhere has had to deal withthis stemming from social media platforms.
But we have these rights and hopefullywith this topic, if someone did not
know what they were when it cameto social media platforms and cistership, hopefully

(19:33):
now you do, and it iswithin your legal rights to stand on these
rights because they were put in placefor us. Now, these were just
a few examples of the rights andfreedoms that are crucial for affair and just
society. It is essential for governmentsand individuals to respect and protect these rights

(20:00):
as they form the foundation of ourdemocratic values and create a society that believes
in equality, justice, and dignityfor all. So, what are your
