Speaker 1 (00:08):
Nil as Man couldn't word what your back door?
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Hi Ellen, Welcome to the Treasure for Techs podcast with
Gypsy Jewels from YouTube's zero Discrimination, as well as her
website gypsydigs dot com and myself, Amanda Digger to Gauze.
I'm on all platforms as Digger to goz d E
g a Z. So we're gonna get right into it.
I know I haven't talked to Gypsy since last Monday.
(01:43):
I know that there was an exciting hunt this weekend,
so we're gonna check on in with Gypsy and see
how that went.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
So, Hey, hey lady, how are you.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
Hey, I'm doing good. I'm doing good. I am actually
still on the road. What do you know? We've had
a few podcasts.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Like this, No, we've never had one like that, never.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
The travel and Gypsy yep.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Indeed, indeed, So how was it? How like, I know,
did you get to meet a lot of fun people and.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
Have a lot I did? I did. I got to
meet a lot of new people. And you know, that's
what's amazing about these times. Even though this was a
smaller hunt and it was not sponsored, you know, by
major sponsors like you know, a bunch of the metal Detecting,
you know, like Garrett and Fisher and Mine Lab, et cetera.
(02:47):
It was sponsored by the Texana Museum and the hunt
was and uh perfect. We had a blast and a
lot of great little prizes given away. There were so
everybody had a blast. From what I heard. There was
(03:10):
a lot of newbies and people that had never even hunted,
so some people didn't bring thinking tools, and a lot
of the kids they came. There was a kid's hunt
that happened first and a lot of the kids, so
we loaned out I don't know all the detectors we
(03:34):
had on hand, and then whatever we could find along
with hand diggers and shovels, et cetera. And everyone just
had an amazing time. And I I just met a
(03:56):
lot of new people and as well as I had
some other friends that showed up. People fans and people
that I've known, you know for several years, and they
metal detecting, you know, met up at different various hunts
that drove and came as well, So it was great
(04:19):
seeing their faces and seeing them again. And something really
crazy just happened on the way back, which wasn't planning
on staying an extra day but that's where it happened.
And sometimes happened things happened for a crazy reason, and
I think this is one of them. Uh So, as
(04:42):
some of you may know, I mentioned that on one
of my social media platforms and that I just started
a new book. It's history related and it's about cemeteries,
not metal detecting, uh, totally to do with history. And anyway,
(05:08):
was at a cemetery and on the way back stopped
at the cemetery. Was out there, we were getting photos
and somebody from the hunt that came saw my hat
from the road and said, I think that's gypsy. Turned around.
(05:29):
Sure enough, of course there was me in a cemetery
and change and invited us. They owned a bunch of
local property that has a private cemetery, a family cemetery
on it. So got led to go out there and
went out there and got some great shots, got a
(05:52):
great little local history lesson on the history around there.
So it's going to be another addition to the book.
So I'm really excited about that. I mean, how often
does things like that happen? It just doesn't, It doesn't. Yeah,
it's kind of wild though that that I got recognized
from the hat, so I gave it away. They didn't
(06:14):
even see my car. Usually it's my car, of course,
But anyway worked out perfectly. It was too funny again,
back go ahead.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
I was gonna say sorry about the little giggle for
a second when you were like, not metal detecting a cemetery.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
It's not about like, yeah, I'm not.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
It's not that I've Yeah, I have taken photos because
I'm fascinated by the history and the grapestones and all
of that. And I've taken photos before of headstones and
posted on social media, and I have gotten scolded or
you're detected in a cemetery, you know, and you know, no, no,
(07:04):
I can appreciate the history. I appreciate the artists. The
artist is and you know the artists that have you know,
carved and engraved those stones and the artwork and the
all of that. And that's what this book will be about.
You know, so many amazing photos and the symbols that
(07:28):
go back to history, that correlate with history. So I
think it's going to be a fascinating It will be
more like a coffee book style, not a ton of
writing in it, but writing, of course, but a lot
of photos so that's what I'm working on.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
Very exciting, very exciting.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
It is. I'm excited. I'm excited. So yeah, so interesting,
trying to you know, pack a lot into this trip
with the book and the metal detecting. Unfortunately, the plans
for metal detecting after they hunt on a permission we
had didn't happen. The lot of things. We kind of
(08:15):
hung out at the restaurant too long after the hunt.
You know, it took a while to finish, you know,
giving out all the prizes and cleaning up, et cetera,
et cetera, and then finally got out to the restaurant.
We had a laugh. Oh my gosh. They're hanging out
with fellow detectorists, you know, and family. You know, we
(08:37):
call them family. You know that getting to have that
camaraderie with people that enjoy what we do, and it
was just it it's about that because they are the
real treasures, you know, the people we meet along the way.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Anyway, Well, it's pretty awesome that there were that many
kids that you know, went out and got to participate
for possibly the first time metal detecting with all of
you there to help guide them.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
That's pretty cool.
Speaker 4 (09:10):
It was and to see the looks. I know that
Megan got some photos. I haven't even seen them yet,
photos of these kids, you know, detecting out there for
the first time ever, you know, And I can't wait
to see these photos and these smiling faces and just
(09:37):
what a difference you can make in their lives. Now.
You never know what seeds you're planting there for sure,
you know, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
It's exacting, it's exciting. It's a new generation treasure hunters, hopefully.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
Sure is it definitely is. So how about you, were
you able to get out and do some detecting or
medlarking or charagere hunting or anything.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
I got out for a little bit of time, kind
of it felt like a minute. I got into the
creek again because we got it was warm here again,
so I was like, you know what, I'm gonna go.
We see if the water was further down so I
could spot some more stuff. And I was down there
poking around, and then all of a sudden I heard.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
This like like brush.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
Breaking, and you know, the branches cracking and leaves scouring,
and I see this guy come like running down and
and I think, like I purposely like kept looking like away,
like pretending I had earbuds in or I don't know
something because I like trying to I don't know, I
don't even know if trying to stay ahead of the whatever.
(10:46):
And I think he spotted me in the middle of
the river. So then he ran back up and I
started moving towards where like to have a view of
my truck, and he like ran towards my truck.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
So I'm like, god, geez.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
So yeah, so I like booked it up, like had
the view of my truck the whole time, lost the
view of him. But but by the time I went
up the hill and like I still had the eye
on the truck, I'm.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Like he was gone. It was very weird. It was
very weird.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Weird yep, because because even it's a straight road, no
trees around, really no, And I'm like, where the heck
did this dude just.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
Go like he was.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
He was coming in hot like down this like in bank,
like you have to you know how you get to it.
It's the falls that I brought you to. You gotta
climb down that little path basically climb down. Yeah, he
was almost all the way to the foundation, and yeah,
I don't know, I don't know where I went, but
(11:50):
I was like, that's my side, because I did.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
I went up.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
When I saw him run towards my truck, I was like, okay, and.
Speaker 4 (11:59):
There's a red flag here.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Well the worst reread flag was that when I a
lot of signs I'm seeing now that i'm talking to you.
But when I got there, I'm like, oh, I forgot
my I carry a knife when I'm in the creek,
and yeah, yeah, I went and I checked. I'm like,
oh I forgot it. It was I left it on
the desk, so I'm like damn. So I'm like, all right,
(12:22):
that's not good first off. And then yeah, this guy
comes charging down the hill and I'm like, oh my god.
Speaker 4 (12:30):
So yeah, I didn't.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
I didn't stay too much.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
I saw a lot of pottery pieces. I did pick
up a bunch of I mean, there's so many in
such a small spot, and I was basically looking for
anything that was patterned or floral, right, And then I'm
I've been doing a lot of stuff in my garden
with bits and pieces of stuff that I've found over time.
So I was like, oh, well, whatever, I'll just do
(12:54):
some more of that this afternoon.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
So what I did is.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
I've been taking those the flats one that is in
those mason jars, the ones that are like clear or
like milky color or like oh yeah, they're really pretty colored,
like some are awquad blue and light.
Speaker 4 (13:12):
Colors blue my favorite.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
Yeah, wire wrapping them to hang them like ornaments in
my gardens, so that like from the trees and stuff,
so that way the sun hits them and they're like
sun catchers.
Speaker 4 (13:27):
What a great idea. I love it.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Yeah, so I was.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
I've been doing that. And then for those people who
have solar powered things, if it's not working anymore, before
throwing it away, invest in new chargeable batteries because that's
usually what the issue is, the battery. That's like I
(13:51):
didn't even realize at first that batteries were in the
solar powered things, but that makes sense because you're charging.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
The battery with the solar power.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
But we have a bunch of solar powered lights in
the garden and whatnot, and I've also been doing that.
I've been changing the batteries and then I'm.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
Like, oh, it works again.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
But I have I have a lot of empty bottles
that are on different steaks and stuff out there, like
green and blue and different bottles and those all glow
at night, and and then broken things like I have
a broken rooster head that fits perfectly in a crevice
of the rock wall, and different things like that, and
(14:32):
my niece and nephew that was at one of my
mudlarking spots.
Speaker 4 (14:40):
It seems like I saw.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Yeah, he's a good size. It's like a it's like
the size of my hand. He's like a big, big
rooster head. Wow, if it's perfect.
Speaker 4 (14:50):
And you know that when I visited you last time,
because I remember looking at your little garden area and
I think I remember seeing that, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
And then like broken dog cops are in like little
crevices or a little just just different things.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
But what I can do is it keeps keeps the
kids busy. They'll come over and I'm like, all right,
how many frogs can you find in the in the
garden and how many how many gnomes? How many hedgehogs? Turtles?
Because there's all different things in there, so yeah, keeps
(15:27):
them occupied cool, and it also helps establish right, I've.
Speaker 4 (15:35):
Been watching a lot of your TikTok, you know, mudlarking
videos lately because they pop you know, pop up you know,
and so I noticed a lot of you mentioned that
a lot. You know, Hey, I might can take this
and use this for my garden, you know. So definitely,
even the broken pieces, because you're giving them a new
(15:56):
home and new use. And I think that's what's so lovely,
you know about our hobby is to repurpose these old
things and give them a new use and bringing back
a little piece of history with you. So I think
it's wonderful.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
I think it's hilarious because in one hundred years, someone's
going to be like, what is this rooster?
Speaker 4 (16:22):
Yeah? Right, Yeah, I thought that too. You know a
lot of times, you know, you kind of wonder about
some of the things you find sometimes, well, how did
that even get where it? You know, got you know
where you found it? If it was something that someone
(16:46):
was you know, repurposing or something, you know, because we
find those really odd out of place things sometimes too.
Speaker 3 (16:56):
Absolutely, absolutely.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
I was trying to explain to someone how the porcelain
doll heads aren't as creepy when you find them mud
larking as you are. Like if you're out in the
middle of the woods and you find like a plastic
doll with like the hair cut and the eye missing
or whatnot. Like that's those I leave there, I said.
But the porcelain ones I find, well, mud larking or whatnot.
(17:19):
I'm like, those can come home. Those those are okay.
Speaker 4 (17:23):
Yeah, Like you're walking down the woods and I've seen
those studios where somebody walks in those areas and there's
all these creepy dolls, like with their heads all on
six and weird creepy stuff like that. I mean, what
were they doing?
Speaker 2 (17:38):
No idea seen it though, been freaked out by it
and left. I didn't and I didn't get a short.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
Right the ship from that.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
But yeah, very freaky. Actually, I think a couple of
those places I still haven't been back. Maybe I did too,
it's been a while, been a minute, wow.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
Been a man. And we're fortunate here. I don't.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
I know some places have them. But we have a
place that a dump that we bring our trash to,
and you know, we have recycling, and we have bottles,
and we have the regular household trash. We have like
where you can put like trees and all that that
type of stuff. And there's a what they call like
a second chance swap swap shop, and people are constantly
(18:31):
dropping stuff and I do too. I'll drop stuff off
in there, but I found some stuff that I'll look
and it's been there and then like four weeks later
it's still there. Like a I took a little Teddy
bear couple that I found in there, and they're at
the base of one of the trees in the garden
having tea.
Speaker 3 (18:48):
But they're like little figurines. Yep, they're having tea in
the garden.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
So but like stuff like that, you can find some
neat stuff in there that's like treasure.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
I gotta send you a picture. I managed to.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
I found a bird that was in there, and I'm like, oh,
this is neat. It's a metal metal and really pretty,
so I grabbed it. So yeah, I've been treasure hunting
in the swap shop.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
I love it. I love it. Oh that's just fun. Yeah.
Past a lot of like those kind of shops and
junk shops and stuff along this trip too, and sometimes
you just don't have time to do it. There's just
not enough time to do all the things you want
(19:37):
to do.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
That's very true. And some of those places you could
end up like it could be tiny. But if it's
you know, we have one up near us. It's tiny,
but they have every single thing. It's like it's like
built like a house with cabinets and stuff, and every
drawer you open has stuff in it to look at
that's for sale. Every cabinet if you open it has
(19:58):
stuff in it for sale. And it's beautiful. But you
could spend hours hours just going through that one place.
So yeah, you need you need time to go to
hit up those type of places.
Speaker 4 (20:15):
Right now, I'm in a town I think I'm in Gettings,
I'm not sure, passing through right now, and I just
passed the most gorgeous courthouse. And we had went through
one town earlier today and got some photos of a courthouse.
(20:37):
And that would be another book I would really love
to write, especially on Texas courthouses, because some of them
are just so amazing piece of history and the architecture
is a treasure in all its own, you know what
(20:59):
I'm saying. Just it's so beautiful. Some of them are
so ornate and just the stonework and the masonry and
the everything about them. And that would be another book
I would love to do. And so maybe after the
cemetery book and the other many projects I can have
(21:23):
time to do that. But yeah, the courthouse I just
passed has a fence around it, so it looks like
they're doing a bunch of repairs, et cetera, updates on it.
But and it's sprinkling raining right now, so of course
(21:44):
you can't take photos of that. But a beautiful courthouse
treasure of its own.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
Some of those I think, I forget which metal detectorists.
They had a permission for a courthouse a lot and
they showed the building and it was gorgeous.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
So yeah, I see that, I could see that.
Speaker 2 (22:09):
Some amazing Go ahead and you continue.
Speaker 4 (22:15):
No, I was just gonna say, I've seen some amazing
finds that have been found at courthouses when people get permission.
I really is supposed to be legal in Texas to
hunt at courthouses. I mean legal, I said, because it's
city property. But I will say that I remember reading
(22:37):
a book along. No, there wasn't a book that was
a detectorist that told me this that when you find
the old courthouses and you find the door that they
went out of after they signed their divorce papers, that
they would literally walk out the door and throw their rings.
(23:01):
They said that this one guy that I'd met years
and years ago. He had handfuls. He's on one courthouse.
He had like twenty rings and he found outside one
door in one area. So can you imagine crazy thoughts
got I bring that up, But that made me think
(23:24):
about it, isn't that crazy? They were done name there,
didn't care chunk that ring? Yep, it's raining, So.
Speaker 3 (23:46):
Are you I think you're going to be able to
get out again this week?
Speaker 4 (23:52):
Well, the thought was I was going to try to
go volunteer down at the River Guadalder. I have a
friend that lives in Kerrville and should offer for me
to stay there and go volunteer and help find some
of these missing people. But now it's flooding again and
(24:15):
I think they've made people evacuate, so that's probably not
going to be happening. And there is still over one
hundred people still missing, so there's still so much work
to be done down there, so it may have to
wait another week. That was what I was planning on
during this week, So that's probably not happening, but I
(24:38):
would like to get you know, weather permitting, I may
be able to get out midweek and at least go
get some video. I did get local park today was
a little pot lot, so I was able to get
to grab a little video. The only gonna be a
cute little video, so I had to get a quick
(25:04):
metal detect and fix in. Yeah, it's like I thought, like,
no kids here at all. I'm going to take advantage
of this moment. And I did, and so found a
few little items, so I think I'll make It's gonna
make a fun video, so I will probably if I
have time tomorrow, try to edit that and get it
(25:27):
up on my YouTube channel and then maybe make a
few shorts out of it as well for you know,
TikTok and Facebook and stuff. So it'll be a fun
little video.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
That's cool.
Speaker 4 (25:41):
Okay, sounds out of the ring.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
That's good, yo.
Speaker 4 (25:46):
What about you?
Speaker 2 (25:49):
Thursday we were we are headed to Vermont, and I
guess we are digging Friday, and then the benefit is
Saturday in Essex Junction, and then I guess there's digging
on Sunday. But I do have to get home, so
I might do a little bit in the morning and
(26:09):
then we'll head out. But I'm actually going to be
picking up a metal detector, so that's exciting. Oh and
I'm gonna see people and I'm gonna see friends, so
that's always fine.
Speaker 4 (26:21):
Yeah, yeah, that is totally so tell us more about that.
I think you talked about last time.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
But yeah, So it is a fundraiser. It's called KK
Strong and it's an event that's benefiting k who's a
breast cancer survivor, as well as local veterans. We actually
we had KK on I think maybe yeah last year
(26:50):
or the year before. So it's Karen Kasopski and she
was relatively new in the hobby and it was a
really fun conversation to have because again we love you know,
new perspectives on metal detecting is always fun. So we
had her on as a guest. But it's at the
Double E Performance Center in Essex Junction, Vermont, Saturday July nineteenth,
(27:13):
six pm to ten pm, and it's twenty five dollars
tickets at the door. If anybody tells you that they
have tickets and to send them Venmo or whatnot, there
are liars and scammers. You can only buy tickets at
the door at the time of the show. So yeah,
it should be a lot of fun. I'm looking forward
(27:34):
to it. We got Dan Parks performing at seven Autumn
City performing at eight, and then John is performing at nine,
and then yeah that they're digging digging the day Yeah,
it is, it is, and we get to dig the
day before and dig the day after.
Speaker 4 (27:54):
So that sounds like a blast to me. And yeah, kk,
I think I've first met her at in Florida at
a Florida Hunt and in person, I think i'd seen her,
you know on social media stuff that I first got
(28:15):
to detect her with her at in Florida years ago.
I had one of the Florida Hunts and it was
she was such a pleasure enjoyed hunting with her and
an amazing person. And yeah, she's had a big struggle
with the breast cancer and so it's amazing if any
of y'all can get out there and support in what
(28:39):
a great a great thing to double support. And also
with the music, I think it's going to be amazing.
So it sounds like a great time. I'm jelly's that
I'm not gonna be there because of course Vermont and
this time of year, what's the weather going to be like?
(29:00):
Nice and hot, hot, hot.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
It's probably eighty so today is eighty here, it's supposed
to get up to one hundred again. I think by
this weekend for there, I think we're supposed to actually
get up to like ninety on Thursday. But then we're
having weird weather gypsy. It's it's so strange. It gets hot,
like we'll have hot day for like two days, and
(29:25):
then a storm will come in and then we'll be
back into the sixties in the evening and the hider
in the day is seventy and then yeah, here and
there it will be eighty eighty two. But when it's hot,
it's freaking hot.
Speaker 3 (29:41):
It's crazy.
Speaker 2 (29:43):
But it's like I couldn't put away my I was
trying to put away like my hoodie and a couple
other things, and I'm like, there's been a couple of nights.
I'm like, jeez, I'm actually freaking chili.
Speaker 4 (29:55):
Oh wow, that's crazy. Yep, Well, no chili weather, hot
as hat, wet and like crazy. So you know Texas
weather and where I've been been hot and humid. So
anyway back back to East Texas to the hot and
(30:18):
humid there as well. So I'll get out if I
can be prepared for you know, drinking a ton of
water and finding a white good way to cool down.
Speaker 2 (30:30):
So Yeah, did you find your towels, like your cooling
towels that I have them?
Speaker 4 (30:37):
Yeah, I have them somewhere.
Speaker 3 (30:41):
They're they're the best.
Speaker 2 (30:42):
And I invested in another one just in case because
I'm like, you know, yeah, because they start to yeah, yes,
they start to not work.
Speaker 4 (30:51):
I mean to probably just buy some new cooling towels. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
And then I've got one of those big brimmed hats,
not like yours, because yours.
Speaker 3 (31:01):
Is like like felted or whatnot.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
This is like the big that you can actually wet
and it's a cooling hat and I love it. It
works so great in the summer to you know, cover
your back of your neck and yeah, I can't even
think of what the type of.
Speaker 4 (31:19):
He Oh, there's a rainbow. There is a rainbow right now.
I see a rainbow. So where's the treasure?
Speaker 2 (31:26):
Hopefully you're heading towards it, right, you're heading towards the.
Speaker 4 (31:29):
I'm headed towards the rainbow. Yeah, So how pretty is that?
Speaker 3 (31:34):
That's cool?
Speaker 2 (31:39):
