Hello everyone, and welcome back it'sbeen a bit of a hiatus,
but we have another episode of twoSlips a Galley coming away. I know

(01:42):
you've been chopping at the beat toget it, and I'm joined here tonight
by I'm sorry, I forgot yourname. It's been so long since we've
done an episode. Aaron. I'mkidding it, Aaron. It's the Aaron's
here again. We're back with morecricket goodness. How I Aaron, I'm
really well, it has been along time. It's only thinking the other
day. We really need to gettogether and scratch the mitches. Mate.

(02:04):
Yes, it's been my fault.Combination of a week of late shifts at
work, which didn't coincide with gettinga podcast done. Then the spicy flu
got me for a couple of weeksso I missed out, and then another
week of lates at work. Sothat's a month where I haven't been able
to organize a time to get outand do an episode. But we're back
and we've got plenty to talk about, so we're going to get stuck right

(02:27):
into it. It was the episodewe're going to do before we got way
late we work. We're gonna havea bit of a chat about what has
been a pretty good domestic season fora cricket in Australia. There have been
some bright sparks. Obviously, theteam that has just been the gold standard
in Australian cricket for a number ofyears now has got the trophy again in

(02:52):
Western Australia. Believe that's a hattrigger wins on the trot for them.
They're just a really organized winning machineout there at the moment. They've got
a great thing going on in WestAustralia. So we're gonna have a bit
of a chat about the domestic scenein Australia and what we believe the team
of the tournament was, and thenwill touch a little bit on the IPL.
I haven't seen great deal of it, but you've been much more of

(03:14):
an avid watching are Yeah. ActuallyI must have meant to becoming a little
bit of an IPL fan. Well, I had been until this year because
it's really just become ridiculous again.I have had over the previous couple of
years have become much more of acontest where the bowlders were involved in the

(03:35):
game. I mean, there's beena couple of games this year you could
just roll the bowling machine out.Literally I've seen every second where it's been
well and truly over two hundred runsand both teams it's like there's been nearly
four hundred and eighty runs scored inthe game sort of thing. Well,
there's one game the other day andit was a world record for the most
runs ever scored in a twenty twentygame, and it's like pushing it was

(03:58):
over five hundred. Well, Ireally think it was too eighty. It
was too eighty nine to two sixtysomething to age and nine. Yeah in
a twenty overs Yeah, Sunrise hydroback, Well that was when Travis got
his hundred Sunrises hydro back got two. I saw a scorecard for that,
But I was just looking at TravisD's one hundred more mister class and come

(04:18):
in and show it again why heis just such a force of nature into
twenty cricket. I mean, hewas hitting one hundred and six is down
the ground. It's just ridiculous. But yeah, the wickets have been less
than favorable for a sporting contest.Great if you like to watch the ball
disappearing over the fence, but yeah, I know about you. I kind

(04:39):
of like I've made this argument four, like I've made it with ODI eyes
that I think a really good Odioeye somewhere between like two seventy five and
three twenty yeah as a score, and then you obviously get really close trying
to chase that down, obviously closeto the better. But I think if
you're aiming somewhere in that somewhere betweentwo sixty two seventy to three ten three
twenty f sitting in there, youset up for a really good game of

(05:02):
cricket to watch, because it meansthat you know it hasn't got so out
of hand that the bowlers you knowaren't in the game, and you know
it's also not so weighted in heavilyfavor of the bowlers that it just becomes
a bit of a snooze because aretoo on top. So I'm thinking about
the t twenties that I've really enjoyedwatching the most in terms of the contest
of the game. Sit around thatlight one seventy mark where you know,

(05:28):
you know, I think ten andover is sort of where you are for
the total scores, where you wantbecause you can still think, going,
okay, have you chasing down somewherearound two hundred you get off to a
bad start if you keep wickets inhand enough to go for a launch.
We know that good teams can puton you know, six sixty seventy runs
in the last five over, soI think, so you're never really out

(05:48):
of the game. So I thinkif you, yeah, you've got somewhere
between sort of one seventy and twohundred and the t twenty playing that you
know, ideally a few wickets fallingas well. But yeah, games where
it's just become you know, twothirty plays two twenty five in. And
the thing is to all of thesebig totals, they're not losing a lot
of wickets, you know, it'slike the other day the sun roll or

(06:10):
they're not losing wickets in like conventionalways. They sort of lose, they
might lose a wicket and it justthen becomes a bunch of guys trying to
find the fence and they're holding outon the boundary or getting clean bold because
they've just you know, they're lookingup at the stars instead of the ball.
Like the bowlers haven't really earned thatwicket by doing anything. They've just
they're just not hit it well enough. I mean, even the premiere bowlers

(06:30):
in this form of the game, like you Trent Bolts and stuff like that,
have really struggled even with the ballswinging. I mean, it's basically
the wickets that there's nothing in thewicket off the scene really, I mean,
the best the best success that thebowlers are having is really slowing the
ball down, digging it into theinto the pitch, and it will slow

(06:53):
up. But if you just tryand buy a normal pace, so you
just buy a normal spin or whatever, you're getting carted because there's nothing there
for you at all. If you'rea fan of big hitting, which obviously
the IPL tries to endorse, thenyou're gonna have a good time. But
if you're looking for a contest,a contest, that's one of the reasons
other than obviously work getting in theway of being able to watch it.
But it's just you're sitting there watchingit, going okay, yep, cool,

(07:15):
Well there's nothing doing that. Whiteball is doing nothing at all.
I might as well all sort ofthing. Couldn't do any worse sort of
thing. But anyways, we're gonnaget stuck in all that. We're going
to start off, though, witha bit of a trip around the domestic
scene of Australian crickets that's coming upright after this. All right, we're
gonna have a chat about the domesticscene in Australia. And as I said

(07:40):
at the top, the Western AustralianWarriors have come away with the title.
Yes again just proving that there's thereduction line of quality cricketers that have just
flown through the West at the momentand just the team that knows how to
win, they get out there anddo it. I mean, and they
were back by having some obviously somevery talented players Aaron Hardy, they've had

(08:01):
Camon Green for a little bit,but then the guys like Joel Paris who
have managed to stay healthy and keepthemselves sort of in and amongst the fight
for most of the season was areally big list Cory Rockett Celley, who
has been the prize packet of theseason for me. I mean, I
know, you look at that bowlinglist and you go, yeah, well
that guy, you'd expect him tobe taking forty wickets the season. But

(08:24):
Corey Rocketelli, I mean, thisis really his breakout season for him.
You know, I guess we figuredhe was a bit of a spear of
parts player was only going to playin certain conditions, but his success over
in the West has been probably akey part in them, you know,
going back to back to back. And it certainly doesn't hurt that the second

(08:46):
and third leading run scorers for thetournament were the opening pair for Western Australia.
It means they're getting a lot ofgames, they're getting a lot of
runs up front. It's just it'sbeen it's been huge and then they just
keep on winning. Some shout outto sir. We'll go with the batters
who have impressed, but me so, I've been really impressed with Nathan McSweeney.

(09:13):
He showed a bit last year, showed a bit in the Big Bash,
and he's kicked on, which iswhat you want young batsmen to do
when they start showing a little bitof promise. They've they've then kicked on
toward about a big year. Inmixtween he was the fourth leading run score
seven hundred and sixty runs at anaverage of forty three hundreds. And I'm

(09:33):
pretty sure he's got a couple acouple of goods as well. So he
Yeah, the guys that we're probablygoing to chat about the most are guys
who are finally starting to show theirpotential, you know, and he's one
of them. Consistency seems to beto keep with him as well. He's

(09:54):
very consistent. He's always there's alwayssomething doing with him. And they've been
South Australia. To be fair,I haven't really had a lot of consistency
in terms of production from their otherbatsmen. So the same thing that we've
used time and again in this podcastto prop batsman up guys like Lara,
guys like Flower. You know,it can be difficult to get the big

(10:16):
scores when the team is falling apartaround you, however, and knows when
you've got a solid partnership that youcan you can feel more comfortable to crease
and get more runs. I thinkit's even more impressive that the tea he
has been doing that us being newSouth Welshman, it hasn't been a great
year or great couple of years forus. We've been struggling quite a bit.
But I did want to throw outthis one. I'm sure you won't

(10:37):
have any issues with me chating thisguy out, Ollie Davies. He's played
seven matches compared to the guys infront of him who have played at least
three more almost yeah, so thesame again, almost ten more innings and
he scored six hundred and seventy runsat sixty seven, going at a strike

(10:58):
rate of eight, with three hundredsand three fifties. In so half of
the times he went out to batthis season he was getting fifty or more,
which is wonderfully consistent on what wewere hoping that we were going to
see probably this year. And Ithink what's I've brought this up repeatedly before.
It's usually to criticize that the BigBash is the Big Batch hasn't really

(11:20):
produced any mainstays to our T twentynational side. No one in the T
twenty national site at the moment youwould say, has announced themselves by being
a gun T twenty player in theBig Batch. I've Warner made his way
inside being a gun tea where itwas pre Big Bash days, but no
one's sort of been a young kidcoming through the ranks like a Jay Swoll

(11:43):
from India, killed it in theBig Bash, gotten himself a gig in
the Australian side and then gone onthe bigger, better things. Everyone that's
done really well in the Big Bashhas been an established name before coming into
the Big Bash and then whereas OliDavies is sort of he's I wouldn't say
kill it in the Big Bash, but you can sell that he's a special
player. And what that's parlayed intorather than an Australian T twenty jumper is

(12:07):
he's actually turned it into a verysuccessful first class resume. He's starting to
come along when he's got his gig, you know, finally got a consistent
run of the new South Wales sideat the end after the Big Bash last
but not the Big Bash this year, was on before because okay, there's
a bit of talent there. He'sI think he scored at least one hundred
and a couple of really good grittyfifties. I should say gritty. They

(12:30):
weren't really gritty. They were verydashing, but they were in condition,
like really low scoring games and he'sthere just blazing away. And now he's
kicked that on into you know, six hundred runs in seven games is impressive.
Pretty handy had a strike rade ofeighty and I think the thing that
frustrates me the most about it isJake Fraser McGirk had two fairly impressive innings

(12:54):
that I can recall two or threefairly impressive innings in the big batch this
year. Other than that, hasa bit hit and miss, as you
expect from a young player that throwsabout at everything. He turned that into
a T twenty start and a oneday in the National start and then people
talking about fast tracking him into theAustralian Test side and Fraser mcgirk's shield and

(13:18):
list A numbers are actually pretty bad. Yeah, they're not impressive at all.
I'll see if I can ring themup well. Even this year,
I think he's averaged twenty not whatwe not what we really want to see
from young guys coming through win firstclass cricket. Might be fine of yelling
and play teen twenties, but ifyou're batting in the middle order in a

(13:41):
first class two Frasier McGurk has played, has sixteen innings, three hundred runs
at nineteen with one hundred so hescored one hundred and then just absolutely nothing
else. And he's been talked aboutgetting into the national side, the Test
side, which I think he's destinedto do. I think he's a very
talented play but you've got Ollie Davies'sin a very similar mold. Who is

(14:01):
actually killing it in shield at themoment. So he scored as many one
hundreds and fifties, So the guy'sahead of him. So Webster was the
standout bat of the tournament. Threehundred six fifties. Bancroft who everyone was
screaming blade murder needed to be inthe Australian side after Warner retired, three
hundreds, four fifties, Whiteman whohad a very impressive year, three hundreds

(14:24):
two fifties, McSweeney who have justtalked great things about three hundreds and three
fifties. And then there's Oli Davies. So no one has scored more hundreds
than Olie Davies. And there's nota breath of wind about when's Oly Davies
is going to be looked at forthe Australian Test side. And you'd think,
you know, a dashing right handedbatsman who's going at a strike rate
of eighty score one hundreds left, right and center would be getting a little

(14:46):
more, a little more. Lovecouldn't agree more. And the sad thing
is, I think it's a reflectionagain of media height like Fraser McGurk seems
to have a very favorable, avery favorable passage through the media. I'll
tell you what it is. It'snot media hype. It's the fact that

(15:09):
the media couldn't care less about theSheffield shild Well there's that as well.
Big Bash is on primetime Freedom whereeveryone can see it. Everyone's watched this
kid walk out and blaze away andscore a seventy and twenty five balls or
whatever it was, and then that'sparlay then into whiteball cricket against the West
Indies, and then because everyone's seenit it's on the TV, we want

(15:31):
to talk about it. We wantto talk about the Big Bash. Because
we've just seen the Big Bash. We're all watching it. It's been shoved
down our throats and we talk aboutit. Ollie Davies has had a probably
a pretty average Big Bash. Youknow, some starts, a lot of
starts, a lot of dashing starts. We wouldn't say any really big impressive
scores. He's doing his best workon like the Cricket Australia live stream.

(15:54):
No one's watching it and so wedon't care when in fact he's actually arguably
the most impressive young batsman in thecountry. At the moment could have been
actually a blessing in disguise for him. Well, it might be a blessing
in disguise. Well, he's fromNew South Wales, so all the people
in the outside States will probably saythat he's got his bag a green in

(16:14):
the mail. But obviously you kin'dof want the attention a little bit,
the right people paying attention. Soobviously the selectors aren't going to be deciding
on you know who Fox Sports andChannel seven are talking about. But you
know, I'm sure you know, being in his position and like an empathize
going, I wish somebody was talkingabout me to play for Australia. I

(16:36):
mean, this is what I'm doing. I mean, and just for the
sake of the Sheffield Shield itself, you'd like his exploits to be talked about.
This is a guy that we couldgo could certainly head down that road
about the degradation and basically the totalundermining of the Sheffield Shield over a long
period of time. But we probablydon't have two weeks on this podcast that

(17:00):
we'll just let that one go throughto the keeper. But yeah, look,
I really think that somebody somewhere mustbe taking notice of this. Hopefully
the other player they're taking notice ofis bo Webster. Yeah. I mean
back in the day when we're talkingabout moving through, I've always asked Blake
I out and scored one thousand runsthis year and Shield and that's that's your

(17:22):
ticket to get through. And thatwas that. You know, Matthew Hayden's
had to go put together back toback to back to back a thousand run
shield seasons to break into the side. Didn't quite get there. But in
nineteen innings, bo Webster scored ninehundred and thirty eight runs at an average
of fifty eight. As I saidearlier, three hundreds and six fifties.
The other thing that I find veryvery impressive about bo Webster is he also

(17:44):
took thirty wickets at twenty nine yepbowling military mediums, awesome offies depending on
what the flavor of the month was. So I think he quite deserveably got
the Player of the Tournament because hewas phenomenal that year for Tasmania and probably
a big reason why I ended upin the final. And I like to
think that he is the guy that'sbecause he's coming off another strong year in

(18:07):
both first class and least a games. He had a pretty really strong one
last year, showing off those skills, being able to switch between mediums and
off spin, being a fairly decentmiddle order about it, and was actually
doing it in midover. You knowthat. I can remember a couple of
games we was bowler mediums to aright hand aid. I didn't see it
on a shield, but I definitelysaw that in the Marsh Cup that if

(18:30):
he was playing a bowling to aright handy ball mediums and the left handle
was on strike, he'd swapped me. He did a couple of times for
the Stars, I'm sure. Well, so, yeah, really really talented
young cricketer and I'm hoping that CricketAustralia have seen that and he's on that
short list to be if there's aninjury or anything like that to a middle
order batsman that they're looking at.Unfortunately, it sounds like it's probably Renshaw

(18:53):
as the replacement. But yeah, well from what we from what we've read
in the media over a presenting periodof time, he is supposedly the next
cab off the rank. A disappointingyear this year. Wasn't overly great,
I didn't think, and certainly didn'ttake the most of his opportunities in the

(19:14):
higher rep game that he played, like in the Australia Ras and stuff like
that, had a couple of fairlyaverage games there. Has he lost his
place in the pecking order, Idon't think at the moment yet. I
think McDonald did a very sort ofloyalty sort of he's moving on shortly apparently.
Oh wow, I've heard that.So yeah, mister Voges from Western

(19:36):
Australia seems to be the man inthe frame. Okay, well, he's
obviously can't go wrong. He's beencoaching w Way for a while now and
knows what he's doing. I thinkwe're very lucky at the moment we have
a generation of youngish coaches, youknow, Ponting, Gillespie, obviously Vogas,
guys who have been there, donethat, you know, quite recently

(20:00):
actually in relations to some of theircareers. I think you we're going to
go with another coach. I loveto get pointing around the white ball sides
because I don't think he's got anyinterest in being the full time head coach.
I would love to get him inis like the you know, the
white ball administrator for like one forone days and t twenty cricket for Australia.
Not that it's not in a healthyplace at the moment coming off another

(20:22):
World Cup win, but you justeverything about Ricky pointing just Ers is that
he didn't get his way around. You know, I'll limit it over his
format. The other one obviously thatI wanted to throw a shout out to,
and you've mentioned it earlier as wellas Corey Rockaicelli playing predominantly out west.
He's a third leading weiket taker forShield with forty six wickets to twenty

(20:44):
seven bowl on off hees, youknow, firmly putting himself in position to
maybe snatchhold of that spot beat thatwill be vacated by Nathan Lyon at some
point in the we'll call him NathanLyne the semi distant future. But you
know, Todd Murphy didn't really tokick on this year after sort of getting
his Test debut and coming back toVictoria. Wasn't a bad season, but

(21:06):
you wouldn't say that he sort ofstood out by any stretch. While Rocaicelli's
there, you know, taking bagwickets left right center, Fergus O'Neil looks
like he's going to be one towatch for a Baggie Green's actually fast bowling
cartel sometime soon. I was justabout to bring him up. It's really
really good to see a young guyin that in that top list of of

(21:27):
wicket takers. He was very impressivein the in the games that I say
because I do tend to watch abit of the Shield because I can get
it on KO so lazy Monday afternoonor something or Tuesday or whatever it happens
to me when they're wherever they playing, you can always tune in. And
yeah, he's very very impressive.I've got to see subtleland Will Sutherland again

(21:49):
in another reasonably strong year for Victoriaas well. He's got to be sort
of in that frame as well,be playing multiple formats for Australia and he's
already been in gigs in the whiteball sort of tournaments, and he looks
like he's a guy that is justbasically waiting for one of the fast bowlers
to fall off and ready to goand not necessarily anyone who's in this framework

(22:12):
for Australian call up. But itwas just good to see Lawrence Neil Smith
back the Tasmania. He burst onthe scene for them a couple of years
ago and has been sidelined by injuriesand he's come back out. He's played
six games this year for Tasmania, bag himself twenty five wickets at twenty three,
which is a very very very healthyreturn, and Jack Edwards from New

(22:37):
South Wales has sort of starting todeliver on some of that promise that he
has been showing. He was verystrong in the white ball formats but in
a struggling New South Wales side abit this year twenty two wickets at twenty
four while also being you know, well he wasn't amazing with the bat in
the shield, not as much ashe was playing white ball crew, but

(23:00):
he was still relatively stroll, beingthat all around a sort of player.
So it's good to see him startingto kick on there. It's three hundred
runs at thirty three with two fifties, so especially from a New South Wales
perspective, to finally see a bitof a return on the investment that the
New South Wales was put in forJack. I think he's probably battened a
little bit high, Yeah, probably, I think so. But I think

(23:21):
the additions that the new South Waleshave got are going to assist with that.
So they've recently just signed the pairof Madison and Nick Madison to come
back from Victoria and Josh Philippi tocome over, who's probably sort of slipping
out of that pecking order a littlebit. Yeah, he's not keeping behind
Josh Inglis, you know, andI think that, you know, he's
the sort of guy that could probablybat higher than you know, seven,

(23:45):
where he's been predominantly keeping four orbatting for for w A. I think
he's a guy that might be ableto keep and still bat somewhere like five
or maybe even six. If anyoneto say, I think we really want,
if we're going to if he's comingover to keep, we really want
to play him in the top sixbecause it opens up so many of the
options below him. You know,I would personally be looking at him at

(24:07):
six and Edwards at seven. Yeah, that's sort of you know, Olie
Davies at five. You know,Maddinson, what three or four or we
going to be opening? Yeah,he's been batting three. It just depends
on what they've got. You'd imaginethat, uh, what he hughes will
open the batting on. Rekez willbe there or about, so maybe him

(24:30):
at four, maybe Maddow at twoor three, and then you're depending on
what else you've got a valley. You've got Curtis Patterson as well, so
he finds some forms. There's someyoung guys coming through. We're gonna lose
Jason Sanger. He's heading to SouthAustralia. That's a bit of a loss,
but really this is a guy.He came on, had a really
big purple patch through the Big Bashwhich turned into a really strong sealed season.

(24:52):
To the back end of that, you're like, okay, here he
is. He's arrived. And thenhalfway through the next two old season he
was dropped again because he wasn't scoringany runs. So I'm not saying that
his career has done and dusted, but you know, there's only so long
you can really persist and something's notclicking. So it's not working for him
playing for New South Wales. Maybegetting out there to South Australia will start

(25:14):
to see the best of Jason Saying. Because there's absolutely no doubt in my
mind that he is a much bettercricketer than what we've seen. I've watched
him score one hundred for New SouthWales and it was as close as you
can get to a faultless hundred.Looked really good and that was against a
fairly strong Queensland that had Nissa, that had Bartlet, that had swept in

(25:36):
the side. Was really really stronghundred. And then yeah, he's just
watching again other games where he justfinds ways getting out. So he's still
young, got a lot to learn. But obviously it's not clicking for New
South Wales. They've got to goin a certain direction to get themselves back
to the top of the table andbetween them and Jason, they've decided that
he's not going to be the wayforward. So just for the on the

(26:00):
subject of New South Wales and bowlers, hasn't Chris Tremaine been a wonderful pickup
for the last time. It's goodto get him home. He's a New
South Welshman and he's been away fora while and come back and you know
he was was he the leading youcould take it? Have fifty wickets,
fifty wickets at fifteen and like everytime I saying him BALI was just like

(26:26):
he just threatens the batsman all thetime. He's just at you all the
time. He like Scott Borland asa player that was born five years too
late or probably at the age theyare now maybe seven years too early.
Not timed there as well. They'vethey've managed to run into the wall,

(26:47):
the big blue wall that he's comeins haesl Wooden Stark and they've been remarkably
fit for a long period of time. They've been just excellent bowlers for Australia
for a long period of time. There's been no cracks for other other scene
bowlers to get in and get theirclaws in. So it's just one of
those guys. You can look atthat and go, what an amazing shield

(27:08):
career this person's had. How ishe not played more cricket for Australia or
any cricket for Australia. Yeah,And I think there's you know, in
ten to fifteen year, twenty yearstime, you're looking back at the shield
you know, records for some ofthese bowlers in this era, there's going
to be that why didn't they playmore for Australia And it turns down to

(27:30):
Pat mentioned Josh Yeah, absolutely,Well I wanted to go through and just
have a bit of a chat aboutwho I thought were my representatives for the
Shield Team of the Year in battingorder. In batting order, Yeah,
so I had Cam Bancroft obviously atthe top, being the you know,

(27:52):
almost leading, second leading we couldtake up. I narrowed down to two
for the other one, and Iended up going with his partner, Sam
Whiteman. But I wanted to chuckout Madison in he'd scored three hundreds,
didn't score much else other than thosethree hundreds in it, but he just
didn't play enough cricket for mine toget into the swide like he came out,

(28:14):
scored his three hundreds, I thinkit was in like four or six
games, scored nothing else at allin any of the other eadings. I'm
just like, like, you're sittingthere looking at that go and that's a
really impressive record three hundreds and sixgames. You're a bit stiff there,
Aaron. But you know, Samwas out there every week doing he's singing,
and I think at some point availabilityhas got to be considered as well,

(28:36):
so just misses out. I knowit's a bit rough on him,
but I have absolutely no problem withSam Whiteman being in that team. He
has been a quality first class openerin Australia and over in England for a
number of years now. Yeah, and it annoys me and then anyone who's
listened to the podcast for a while, between me and Glen, they'll know
it annoys us that he doesn't getmore coverage, It doesn't get anything as

(29:02):
a potential Oprah placement over them. You know, when we were talking about,
you know, before KWAJA was elevatedup and things like that, Mourner's
form slumps, is the time fora change. There was never any talk
of Sam Whiteman, except for maybeKerry O'Keefe was probably one of the few
people that would go, don't forgetabout Sam Whiteman. But it just you
know that that spark never caught on, never blaze, anyone talking about it.

(29:23):
It was just sort of the uglyduckling of the shield world. We
wouldn't talk about him. But Imean, unfortunately for the people that want
to go down that path, lookat the numbers. Look at his numbers,
check out his first class career.Yeah, it's solid. It's solid
as solid, you know, andnot just here but over in England where

(29:44):
we judge openers by making runs inEngland. He makes runs in England.
Man. Yeah, he's a veryhandy cricket. He's a very good player.
I got Nathan McSweeney at three,as I said, really, you
know, twenty five years old, look at a million bucks. He's been
real classy in all formats and Ijust think there's a very bright future there.
Hopefully he kicks on and keeps keepsthe selectors. Honest. Consistency is

(30:04):
the thing with him that is reallyimpressive. Every time I sewn him this
year he made runs and dirty hardruns too, man. And he's got
a respectable bowling arm on him aswell. Yeah, cheeking right, you
know, to get upset about Charliewere keen from Tasmania. Very successful campaign
this year for Tasmania and he wasone of the driving forces behind that.

(30:26):
Very impressive year. Six hundred andseventy nine runs, two hundred and through
fifties, batting average of fifty three. Very good year for Charlie. Olie
Davies, As I said, Ithink is probably the most impressive player in
his least seven games three hundred andthree fifties, real bright spark, really
aggressive midlaughter player six. I've gotthe player of the tournament web. That's

(30:48):
bad year. Then I've got JimmyPearson. I think you know, ten
matches average thirty one hundred and threefifties. There wasn't really a lot of
competition. I felt for the wicketkeeper squat. English didn't play a lot.
There wasn't really anyone from New SouthWales that stood up from South Australia

(31:11):
who's a very good keeper. He'sdone nothing with the bat. He was
on the verge of being dropped.Yeah, Philip, Yeah, piercing yet
again, just been rewarded for consistency. And how lucky are we that we've
got guys like him that are runningaround. I don't understand why he isn't

(31:33):
on a tour at least well,he's got on a couple of Australia A
tours and killed it. I justthink the reason why he's probably not going
on tours is they're reluctant to takean extra an extra wicket keeper, because
they know if there is an injuryto a wicket keeper they can just fly
another one over. So there's nopoint in taking an extra wicket keeper on

(31:55):
the squad. They'd rather take areserve, an extra reserve bat or an
extra all rounder. You know,it's not likely that a wicket keeper is
going to do a hammy or anythinglike that or a side strain, and
if they do have one, thenthey will just give him a call and
say you're on the next flight out, get over here, and it's going
to take what the better part ofa day and they'll be fine. I'd
say that's probably more the reason. But it's very good to see that he's

(32:19):
been getting a bit of a runin the Australia and a side. Whenever
he's got a run, he isdelivered for that Australian a side. After
that, I went Nathan Mcanrew,who was I thought I had a really
handy year for South Australia, againin a side that wasn't particularly strong,
but he was always a really strongcompetitor. So he had forty eight wickets

(32:39):
at eighteen, was a second leadingwicket take a strike rate of under forty,
economy of under three, and heis he bowls a heavy ball,
bowls a heavy boar. Yeah, and a little bit. It's just one
of those guys. He's a littleit seems to be a bit quicker than
what the radar gun or you knowwhat the perception of his pace actually is.

(33:00):
I'm saying him, hurry up.A few people in the shields,
So yeah, no problem with that. I think we really need to find
this place from the young O'Neill,he's got to be. Yeah, I've
got Fergus O'Neill in the side.Fergus O'Neill and Rocketicelly were the next two.
So Rockecelly being the spinar Fergus O'Neil, who's just he looks a million
bucks, doesn't he. It's goodto see good young fast bowler coming through,

(33:24):
keeping us on us, so weknow that there's a bit of a
bright future for our I think FastensHazerwood where we're in good hands. There.
We get Joy richardson back with that'sactually interesting, I say they because
Joey's over in the IPL and Iwe'll talk about that at a little bit
later, but jeez, they gotafter him and you could even see he's

(33:46):
not really suited to bowling on thoseflat Indian tracks because he pitches the ball
up too far and they would justsmashing him out of the park and just
step hit sort of thing. Andyeah, again just ano for example of
the way the IPL is going on, where you know, quality guys who

(34:07):
were bowling fast are getting nothing therebut being launched over the fence. That's
just yeah. Anyway, we'll geton today. The last spot that I
had came down to two players.I was between Gay Bell from Tasmania and
Joel Parris from WA and I hadto go Joel. He took a couple

(34:28):
less wickets, but he did playthree sorry one less game than Gay Berll.
So Gaybrill had forty two wickets atnineteen strike rader forty two. Joel
Parris had thirty nine wickets at fifteenstrike rader thirty six. He also had
a big bag six for seventy four. So yeah, gay Bill had a
pretty big bag as well. Hehad a six for thirty nine in there.

(34:51):
But I just thought, yeah,he was a bowler, key bowler
in the team that ended up winningtournament, just and that's you know,
you got an average around that fifteengoing all right, So I went with
Joel Harris as the final bowler inthere. And and yes, so that's
my team. Bancroft, Whiteman,McSweeney, Laquem Davies, Webster, Pearson

(35:12):
mc Andrew, Paris O'Neill and RocketChilli. I must have met pretty much
on board with all of that.I'll be really really struggled not to find
a spot for Chris Tremaine in Essa. But I mean he's the last two
years from New South Wales has beennothing short of absolutely amazing in the team.
It is getting the trip almost whereTremaine I just like these guys got

(35:39):
their their teams. I mean it'sthey had baddies, they had bad hisself
out, but you also got toreward the players that are helping their teams
win as well. And so itwasn't like I picked a player players that
had subpar records in winning teams,Like these guys had records that were arguably
as impressive as Tremaine in while winninggames. But yeah, Christian mate,

(36:02):
he's out of a bowler. Andyeah, I imagine even if New South
Wales wins two extra games, you'reprobably talking about him and the team of
the tournament a lot more. Butyeah, so really strong too. I
think that there's what I'm really likingis that there are some young players coming
through that are already putting their theirhands up and excelling this is what we

(36:24):
want. This is what we've beencrying out for, certainly with the Batsman.
You know, how good have welooked in fast bowling for a number
of years now, you know, even with the big free there, we
had a list of replacements for them, the Batsman. The depth of batting
in Australia has been a concern forus as cricket followers. For a number

(36:47):
of years. Nobody was going outand putting really, you know, we're
knocking on the door and saying, hey, I'm the next one. I'm
the next one, except for CamBancroft and to us maybe a certain extent,
Matt Renshaw. But this year youlook around, I mean, how
well is Charlie watching. He's middleaged, he's not as young as he

(37:08):
is, but he's not He's notthe year of retirement or anything like that.
We want to see these guys comingout and having big seasons. What
I'm liking as well is how often, like, how many hundreds would you
so a ten game season? Howmany hundreds would you like your gun bats
in the beginning, And let's faceit, shield pitchers are not great,
no so, and I think there'squite a few of those guys there that

(37:30):
have scored hard hundreds, scored hundredsin a third of the games are going
out and playing, which I thinkis not a bad return. Yeah,
there's not too many roads around thecountry those days, is there. Certainly
it's not for the Shield games.Maybe Karen Rolton Oval can be a bit
of a road, But Karen Roltonis a junction down in Victoria. But
I don't think they've played too many. But the thing is about the junction.

(37:52):
The junction seems to very on preparation. You know, you see games
at the junction of where it's likesix hundred versus five hundred and fifty,
and then you'll see other games whereyou know, it's one hundred and fifty
versus one hundred and ninety vers onehundred and sixty versus you know, eighty
five or something. Because it justdepends on conditions down there. It can
be a bit of a nightmare tobat on, my imagine. But Karen

(38:14):
Rolton seems to be the designated highwayin the first class system these days.
Yeah, so yeah, that's I'mhappy with where well, I'm happy where
where the players are going. I'dlove to see more coverage for Shield like
you just don't hear about it,and it's good quality cricket. People take
it from us and we know we'vebeen watching cricket all of our lives.

(38:34):
I enjoy watching the Sheffield Shield. The only thing about it is obviously you
don't have the atmosphere, but froma cricket purest point of view, it's
really really competitive, top quality cricket. There's been some crackingly close finishes in
the Shield as well, where teamssort of chasing down a score on day
four and they've got wickets wabbling aroundthem and stuff. It's been there's been

(38:54):
some really compelling stuff there. Allright, I'm going to throw to you.
We'll have a bit of a hadabout the IPL. So you've,
obviously, I said at the outset, you've spent more time talking or watching
the IPL than what I have.So how's it been going over there?
It's yeah. Look, I mustadmit to being a little bit disappointed this

(39:16):
year in the IPL because over theproceeding say two or three years, the
bowlers really were starting to come backinto the game and you were getting really
good, bawling performances and even contests. This year's just back to being a
run fest. Quite frankly, theaverage scores in the games have been well

(39:37):
above average. The bowlers are goingfor many more runs per over. I
think the average across the whole IPLis around almost ten per over. So
look some of the some of theobviously you've got the best guys in the
world. They're playing. Yeah, again, I just keep coming back to

(39:58):
the fact that you watch some ofthese games, and yeah, it's great
to watch these guys playing shots, but you want you want a contest,
and the IPL is kind of gettingaway again from if you're if you're lucky
enough to back first and you maketwo hundred and sixty, and quite frankly,
has been a lot of two hundredand sixty scores in this tournament,
you're pretty much home. Well,I'm just having a little kire. So

(40:22):
for rat Cole, he's back inthe runs again for URCB, three hundred
and sixty one runs, leading wecould say a leading run score, I
should say, averaging seventy two. He's got one hundred and thirty not out
and two other scores over fifty. But in the top ten run scorers for
the IPL, he's got the longeststrike rate at one hundred and forty seven.

(40:43):
I think that's pretty damning. Likeyou're scoring one hundred and forty seven
runs every hundred balls. That's prettygood going for anyone, like not necessarily
just for you know, your plotters. That's that's pretty brisk. And yeah,
he is considerably the one sixty oneeighty seven, one fifty ride,
one sixty seven, one ninety nine, Like there are some rapid scorers out

(41:05):
there, and Cole he's just dawdlingaround at one hundred and forty seven.
Well, I was actually where isit? I was looking at somebody earlier
pinary classen averaging sixty three to strikerate of one hundred and ninety nine.
Well, and he doesn't bat needed. He's a sort of five six seven
sought about, isn't he? Heinrichclass and he's not near the top.
It depends where how they're going. He'll back five four or five. He

(41:30):
coment for the other day. Ithink because they got such a massive start.
Travis Head is striking at two hundredand forty eight point seven eight,
that's what he's striking at this tournament. That is just absurd. I must
have mean, I did enjoy watchinghim, just absolutely flay the ball in

(41:52):
the other day some of them hehit some point shots. We needed someone
to do alright, because no,it was he's a doing okay. Yeah,
comings just haven't a quiems quite agood season. The guys here you
expect to do well. Like Maxiehas broken through. He's decided to take

(42:12):
any definite break from the ip.He's dropped himself. Yeah, he dropped
himself. He went to the captainand said, made, I'm not getting
any run. You should put somebodyelse in. Basically, so is this
the beginning of the end of Maxi? Is that finally that the father time
has caught up to his Shenanigans andthat eye starting to go You reckon,
if the eye is going for him, he's done. Look it will be

(42:36):
able to trowl around the world fora couple more years, picking up,
picking up and his pension money. But yeah, look, I've seen him
a couple of times this year ina couple of games, and both times
he got a first ball duck andthe shots that he got out to are
fairly average. And you know what, you know what you get with Maxie.
This is what he's going to do. But he really looked clueless.

(42:57):
That's sort of the really frustrating thingabout Maxwelman. I know he's had some
brilliant things, but you know,I reckon if you go back and look
at, say the top fifty inningsthat MAXI has scored across all formats,
you know, first class tests, this day, a one day international,
T twenty T twenty international, yougo through the best fifty innings he's got.
I reckon of that fifty, nomore than ten would be an innings

(43:23):
where he's just walked out and wentchick boom and gone from ball one.
I reckon. Of the top teninnings, none of them well like that.
There've all been ones where he's beenprepared to drop anchors for the first
few balls, depending on how longthat's going to be depends on the actual
game itself play himself in, youknow, maybe a run a ball or
a bit less than a run aball, and then once he's sort of

(43:45):
been in there for that sort ofmaybe ten twelve balls and a T twenty
or twenty twenty two balls for aone day international, then goes rot and
then kicks off like that double onehundred he scored was the same the match
winning one hundred in that partnership thathe scored again with Cary against England was
the same every major score I've seenLen Maxwell do. He's always given himself

(44:07):
just that time to start. Hedoesn't and all the times that I've seen
him just absolutely mess up is whenhe just comes out with the mindset of
every ball that I see, I'mswinging at and I'm just going to go
hard from ball one and he'll inevitablyyou might pay off. He might end
up with like sixteen or eight sortof thing, but he'll end up getting
himself out pretty cheaply. He's beenThe thing about Maxwell two but is that

(44:31):
he has a presence on the field, okay, and they matter what he's
doing, you know. Obviously he'sbatting is what we all talk about.
But he's bowling has been absolutely rubbish. I mean, I think he'd bowl
in a couple of games he bowledthree overs until of them went for over
twenty. Yeah, he's been reallypoor. The one who has been a

(44:52):
little bit disappointing for me has beencam Green. He's had a very very
poor ipl this year, hasn't bowledwell, hasn't battered well. Yeah,
just I personally think the kid needsa rest. It's been a massive twelve
to eighteen months for him and Ithink his brain has said, you know,
I really don't want to pick upa cricket back for a little while.

(45:15):
Yeah. So unfortunately Starky, he'sjust got the biggest ip L contractor
of all time, has not hada happy return for He's been very poor.
He's been very fucky. Wickets atforty six. Yeah, he's been
very lucky to have that the teamhas been winning because quite frankly, those
numbers and the way he's bolt tobe quite honest, he's just again your

(45:39):
bowl to full on the on thesein Thean wickets and they just smash you
out of the ground. And he'sbeen looking to swing the ball and it
just hasn't been happening for him.But he's not He's not Robinson Cruso there
either. Yeah, there's been plentyof there, Like even Trent Bolt,
who's only seven wickets, I meanit's at twenty five going at seven,
which is pretty impressive. He hasn'tbeen in the wickets either. Sail Narayan

(46:04):
has done alright seven wickets while scoreone hundreds opening the batting, only going
at six point eight. In whatI've seen, six point eight is over.
It's just ridiculous. But yeah, they're outliers. You have a look
at over the whole tournament and theruns per over is just ridiculous. And

(46:25):
I think at some stage people aregoing to get sick of seeing this,
do you know what I mean? When you look at this. So it's
the elite tournament of the world. So the best players in the world.
So so far the leading wicket takers, only three players has taken more than
ten wickets and that's been in sevengames for those players. And so you

(46:52):
look at the leading we get taker, which is Jahil He best was three
for eleven, so then that leavesnine wickets in six games there. And
like these are some of the greatlike best baller jash Mit Bumro who has
been just just like he's got afive f yeah, and in the other
five games that he's played, he'staken five wickets one wicket a game from

(47:13):
one of the best white ball bowlersin the world, you know, Mustafa
rah Rahman from Bangladesh, very accomplishedwhite bull bowler. He's taken four for
twenty nine in one game and thenthe rest of his games he's only managed
six. You know, Paddy Cumminshas sort of he's played six games,
nine wickets, he's got three forforty three was his best bowling. And

(47:34):
then you look at it like Ravarda'snot taking our stack of wickets. You
know, you know arsh Deep Singhhas been one of the better Indian bowlers
and that he's taken nine wickets.Four of them came in one game.
So then there's a wickets in fivegames. That's interesting. But Arshteve has
become he's a very good bowler,by the way, but the commentary around
him this year has been how poorhe's pay Well, he's not a Robinson

(47:58):
Cruize. Themes of seven wickets inseven games, they're making three of them
in one game. When's the lasttime you've seen Trent Bowlder only taking a
wicket a game in the tournament. It's just it's just ridiculous. So I
think somewhere along the line people aregoing to start voting with their feet and
turn the TV's off because it's it'snot. Michael Holding summed it up best

(48:20):
the other day and his ass bydoesn't he commentate on the IPL And he
said, well, I don't comment, I only commentate on cricket. I
love that and he said that quiteearly. That's an old one that's brushed
up. He said that quite awhile ago, going to the law.
Let's look at the positives as well. I suppose so something studying on the
rye and he's the third leading Wigitako, he's scored one hundred and fifty going
at an average one hundred and eightyseven. You reckon he might be in

(48:43):
the calling for a recall to theWest Indian side for their World Cup defense
World Cup campaign and staying on adefense at home this year. Is he
available? I can't imagine why hewouldn't be well, I mean he's really
not to pick him. I mean, if you look at the peak West
Indian team that they could put outon the field, you know you're talking

(49:05):
about guys like the Rhyane and probablyDre Russ and I'd have to go look
in what they've said. What ifthere's any sort of claims around whether they're
available. You'd like to think thatif for a home World cut Neuron with
Neuron would make himself available, wouldthen just be the pride of the West
Indies as we're going to pick him. I suppose it would be frustrating as

(49:27):
well if he's made himself unavailable forother ones. But yeah, he's surely
the West End. He's going tosay themselves, it's a home World Cup
where didn't make the One Day InternationalWorld Cup. We really need to push
for a semi final berth here.Like we've got players that are murdering it
in the IPL. We need tomake sure they're available. Yeah, well,
if they can pick their best team, if everybody's prepared to put their

(49:47):
hand up, they'll have a verycompetitive outfit. But I just think that
the West ind is sadly, sadlyto say they're almost done. I think
from an international cricket point of view. But I don't say that we'll go
Tomar Joseph. He's going to bringhim back. We'll go, We'll go,

(50:07):
my boy, we'll go down thatroad. He actually played, got
a game, how do you goagain? In experience ball on two full
man one hundred and fifty two.K's in our head that one go out
and he's no Steve Smith that he'sclose and you just look at them,
you just look at him. Justcruise in. If there's not if there's

(50:30):
not something about him, you know, he just senses something about this guy.
Anybody who can let the ball gothat fast and can bowl the sort
of balls that we've seen him bowlin longer form cricket, there's the future
there for this kid, no worriesfor we might wrap this one up.
So thank you very much for joiningus. We're sorry about the hiatus,

(50:51):
illness and work obviously getting in theway. You know what it's like out
there, everyone having to you know, work hard for the money. But
yeah, that's our episode done.Thank you for joining us. We're going
to try and get back and havingsome more consistent episodes because there's plenty of
cricket to talk about us. Whilewe love this sport so much, there's
just always something to think. Yourteam endless and yeah we're very shortly.

(51:13):
We were talking about our big dreamagain in America. Yeah, that's coming
up in a couple of months. And to the CPL the MLC, mister
Fraser mcgirtz, grabbing yourself a contractover there as well. Yeah, Smitty's
come to play for my team, the Washington Freedom. I look, I
really think if they can build onwhat they did last year, there's a

(51:36):
real future in America cricket. Ireally do well. We won't delving because
I could talk about American cricket whereit could be a whole new podcast,
but we'll save it for when we'restarting to talk about the I have to
be up at four in the morning. We just don't have time for the
MLC. Is they need to begetting cricket in these cities. At the

(51:59):
moment, they only had the twogrounds where they could play, and to
be fair, they needed to getit off the ground. They wanted to
get the ball rolling ahead of theWorld Cup that's coming in so they wanted
to get Americans exposed to create becausethey were hosting the World Cup. But
the next thing is they need tobe putting the infrastructure down, whether that's
building at the same time or makingit right. This year we're going to

(52:20):
be playing games in New York,or this year we're going to be playing
games in Los Angeles. But theyneed to be getting they need to be
there needs to be a plan.In the next are their six six teams,
So in the next let's say ten, I want it earlier that I'm
just going to say in the nextsix years. So the next six Major
League crickets, they need to havea stadium in each in ex city that

(52:42):
they've got a team in once theyget home and away, once they've got
their own stadium, and they canreally develop their fan base where they're get
people who are coming to every gameall the time and in loyal fans.
That's how you grow your sport. You're not going to grow the sport with
you know, a team from NewYork that's playing in Texas, in Texas
and wherever the other one was thatin Georgia. I think it was Atlanta

(53:04):
or somewhere around there. It wasdown south. Anymore, you need to
get you need to get team theNew York what is it, the New
York Indians whatever it was called. Now am I New York? Am I?
New York. Fans need to beable to go to a cricket stadium
in New York and watch them.Texas Super King fans need to be able
to go to the stadium in Texasand watch them. The Washington Freedom need

(53:28):
to be able to walk down theroad to the stadium in Washington, d
C. And watch them. Andso they're not making huge strides to be
making that happen quickly as quickly aspossible, as quickly as possible, then
it's not going to be an Americantournament. It's just going to be a
spin off of the IPL. AndSo if that's the if that's the plan

(53:51):
for Major League Cricket in America togrow it as a legitimately a legitimately American
sport that American fans can consume, and they need to get that going in
in the cities in America. Ifthey're just content to have the IPL dollars
rolling the the Indians buying the TVrights and just and stuff around and around

(54:14):
content and just content, then it'sit will it will not succeed as an
American sport. Americans need to beable to go and consume it because they've
got so much sport they can alreadycan consume. You look at New York.
There's two baseball teams, there's twohockey teams, there's two basketball teams,
there's two football teams. You know, how are you going to sneak

(54:36):
in and get a cricket team thereif they've got to travel all the way
to Texas to go and watch themexactly. So, Yeah, So that's
that's gonna be the big thing. The groundwork is there, the support was
good. You know, you hadit broadcast overseas. Your product works.
Now you need to put it down. You need to shove down the throats
of Americans now and I'm hoping that'sthere's plans in place to make sure that

(54:59):
happen. That happens promptly. Alright, guys, thank you very much.
As I said, if I addedone more sentence, we'd be having another
episode right now. So I'm gonnaget out of this while on my head.
Thanks for joining us. It's goodto be back. We'll try and
get some more consistent cricket content comingyour way. But until then, guys,

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

It’s 1996 in rural North Carolina, and an oddball crew makes history when they pull off America’s third largest cash heist. But it’s all downhill from there.
