Speaker 1 (00:00):
If you're watching this you'd rather live somewhere that a
flood could happen, or you've already been through one. I'm
gonna be real with you. Floods are one of the
most underestimated disasters out there. They don't always come with
a lot of warning, and they can turn deadly fast.
So let's talk about how they work, what you need
to watch out for, and exactly how to make it
(00:20):
through one. Welcome to the Urban Warrior Podcasts, where street
smarts meet primal instincts. I'm be Rock, your guide to
mastering self defense, survival skills, and the mindset to thrive

There you'll get exclusive tips, gear breakdowns, and behind the
(00:42):
scene content you won't hear anywhere else. Now, let's get
into it. So let's discuss how floods work. Floods aren't
just a lot of water. They're nature's way of saying
I'm in charge now. They happen when more water comes
in than the ground, river or drainage system can handle.
That can front come from heavy rain that doesn't stop.
(01:03):
Hurricanes of tropical storms pushing water inland or snow melting
faster than the rivers can handle. Also dams or levees breaking.
So here's the part people forget. Water is not clean.
It's full of debris, chemicals, and sometimes sewage. It's also
heavy and powerful. Just six inches of moving water can
knock you off your feet, and two feet can sweep
(01:25):
a car weight like it was a toy. So some
of the things that you're gonna need before the flood
comes if you want so, some of the things that
you're gonna need before the flood comes. If you wait
until the water's at your doorstep, you're already behind. You
need to get your gear now. So what you're gonna
really need is an emergency go bag, think waterproof backpack
(01:45):
with the basics of food, water, flashlight, first aid kits,
extra clothes, important documents, and a waterproof bag and any
meds that you're gonna need. Also a portable water filter.
If tap water gets contaminated, you'll need a way to
make it safe. Also battery or a hand crank radio.
Floods can knock out cell service, so you'll need to
(02:06):
update the old fashioned way. Also, you're gonna need some cash,
ATMs and card readers might not work, and a pair
of sturdy boots and gloves. Flood water hides sharp objects
as well as depre which could cause a lot of injury.
So if a flood warning hits, here's what you're gonna
want to do. This is where a lot of people panic,
and you're not gonna be one of them. You're gonna
want to get to higher ground immediately. Don't wait. Water
(02:28):
rises faster than you think. Never walk or drive through
moving water. I don't care if it doesn't look deep.
The only it only takes one wrong step to disappear.
Turn off your utilities if you have time, shut off gas, electricity,
and water to avoid fires and electrocution. Also, listen to
the authorities. This is one of the times you're actually
(02:48):
gonna want to do that. Evacuation orders aren't suggestions. If
they say go, you need to go. And lastly, watch
for secondary hazards. Landslides, sinkholes, and even more floods can
also follow. So now here's where things are gonna get scary.
This is what you're gonna do if you're caught in it.
Worst case scenario, you're surrounded by water. Here's how you
(03:08):
keep yourself alive. First, find something that floats. Doors, barrels,
even large plastic bins can save your life. You're gonna
wanna avoid flood currents. If you're in moving water, try
to angle towards stable ground, not fight the current head on. Next,
I hope I really shouldn't have to tell you this,
but don't drink the water. It's contaminated. Stay away from
(03:28):
it as much as possible, and finally, signal for help.
Bright colors, waving fabric or flashlight at night can make
a huge difference and save your life. And finally, once
you made it through the flood. After the flood, you
need to stay smart. Surviving the flood is only half
the battle. Once the water's gone, what you need to
do is don't go back inside until it's declared safe.
(03:51):
You're gonna wanna avoid down power lines. Also, wear gloves
and boots for cleanup. Floodwater residue is really disgusting. Also,
throw out any food or drink that touched any type
of flood water. Floods don't care how tough you are
or how long you've lived in your area. Floods can
take out entire neighborhoods in hours, but if you understand
how they work, prepare now, and stay calm when they hit,
(04:13):
you'll not only survive, you'll be the one helping others
get through it as well. Before I get out of here,
