Speaker 2 (00:12):
Welcome to us Cho Edge four Friday, November fourteenth, twenty
twenty five. This podcast is sponsored by the NCAA Frozen
four April ninth and eleventh in Las Vegas. Go to
NCAA dot com slash m Frozen four for tickets. I'm
Ed Trevsker alongside Jim Connolly and Dan Rubin. Four games

(00:37):
to look at today, gentlemen, and the first one on
the list is in Hockey East number twelve. You mass
at number eighteen Boston College. You mass the visiting underdog
at plus one fifty BC minus one ninety five, and
the over under on this game is five point five.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Guys, I'm not really sure what the what the oddsmakers
are thinking right now. It's so full for what the
algorithm what broke look I saying I won't make a
pick here is kind of the obvious statement when it
involves a Boston College game. But I will say that
the the U mass odds seem a little bit out
of whack when you're looking at it, and it says

(01:17):
plus one point fifty, specifically for a team that frankly
has had better results over the course of the year,
though there can be an argument made that U Mass
hasn't played the same caliber of opponent as Boston College.
Where BC has played Denver has played more games against Northeastern,
and it's coming off once they stepped back a bit

(01:39):
from that schedule. They went out and swept Vermont last weekend.
But still when you look at U Mass, this is
a very very good U Mass team. I think that
when you look at a seven and four record for
what it's been able to accomplish, even with a split
last weekend, it's still a team that is very good.
So I'm not sure where the number is coming from

(02:01):
where U Mass has been better unless necessarily that you
know the I don't know the battle between the two
fan bases on X maybe maybe swung the odds or something,
because it's like throwing red meat to both of these
teams whenever they show up lately.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
Uh. The one thing that's kind of the X factor
for this.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
I was talking about this yesterday with somebody is what
happens in goal.

Speaker 4 (02:22):
For U Mass.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
If if I believe Michael Rabble was not playing last week,
Jackson Irving did play, So it boils down to who
is in goal.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
I know that Jackson Irving is a very good goalie.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
I believe his dad is a legendary goaltending coach in
the New England area. So there is a lot that
goes into this matchup. But I still am not really
sure why why the number is swinging so much to
Boston College. Uh, Jimmy, I don't know what do you
what happened here? Like did the did the matrix break

(02:56):
on us? I think there's just you know, looking that historically.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
You know, I think BC's one four out of the
last five, although it was a I think it was
a three to two u Mass win last February, the
most recent matchups. So yeah, I don't feel like that
the odds makers are are really considering the current teams
as much as they are just some of the historical
data that they have in these matchups. You know, as

(03:23):
I look at these two teams, if BC's healthier, I
don't know where they are health wise. They need to
get healthy. Gasso and Yelvik being out for them, that's
something that's always concerning. You might know more about that, Dan,
you know, I think when their goaltending has been good,

(03:44):
BC can compete.

Speaker 5 (03:45):
So I understand the line here. If I had to pick.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
I'd probably go U Mass here just out of value
and in terms of over under. I see this probably
as a game that's going to middle somewhere right around seven.
So you know, you're talking about the difference of a
half goal or goal here, So I'm not sure on
that one. I wouldn't touch that, but I would pick

(04:15):
against BC here.

Speaker 5 (04:16):
Even at home.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
The one thing I will I will throw up about
throw up into this. You mentioned the health of BC
is that while players have been out, other players have
started to fill in, and you're starting to see new
roles and new guys start to start to have success.
Dean Laturno is the biggest one for me. Three goals,
three assists. Much was made about him being a first

(04:38):
round pick and having a tougher season last year, but
in the absence of guys like Gaso, he started to
start to light the lamp a video to PowerPoint goal
last weekend. Just as guys have started to play more
and better roles, Ryan Conmee has kind of been moved
around the line chart a bit.

Speaker 4 (04:56):
Other guys have moved up.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
It's turned into a team that's become much more fluid
and much more harder to pin down. So if kind
of from a key to victory is if UMass can
pushing and shove its its style of play and its
top players right in BC's grill, then I think it's
a UMass win. If BC, from the other side of
it is able to continue kind of playing its style

(05:21):
with all of these different names that people aren't maybe
used to seeing, then you know, maybe the odds are
in the right spot based on the historical value that
BC's style has produced wins against you.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Mass, b C with a trip to Vermont got back
to five hundred. You mentioned UMass at seven and four,
even so, is inconsistent too strong a word use for
both of these teams so far this season?

Speaker 1 (05:44):
Probably especially when I look at strength of schedule. BC's
played a really difficult schedule and that I think you
have to take that into consideration. You Mass hasn't played
the easiest schedule either, So I just think with BC,
I guess where you're going with that, that you could
kind of give BC a pass, you know, and just
say it's consistency that is an issue. But I think

(06:08):
you put some inexperience, some injuries, all of that together.
I think that's been BC's biggest issue thus far.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
But let's take a look at our next game, and
for that one, we head out to Michigan and Penn State.
It's going to be at Penn State. Michigan is a
plus one ten, Penn State a minus one forty over
under on this one, not surprisingly given the offense of
both teams is six point five.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Michigan kind of the quietest number two team in the country.
I think that we haven't really talked enough about, at
least over the course of the year, at least from
my perspective, where all of these teams that seem to
be rotating through the top part of the rankings. We
talked about Denver, We've talked about Penn State a lot,
with kind of being with Gavin McKenna and some of

(07:00):
those players that they've had. We've talked a lot about
Michigan State, very obviously as the number one team in
the country.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
Michigan, I feel like has not.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
Been on the radar enough and I'm not really sure
why went out swept Notre Dame played really well in
the win against Wisconsin, which was a Friday game, did
not win the game on Saturday, and kind of got
blown out. Won the game on Friday against Western Michigan.
To me, if you're playing a game on Friday, this

(07:29):
is what makes Michigan as a slight underdog. Maybe is
that it's on the road, But it's one of those
things where I don't think Michigan gets enough love because
of what is going on at some of these other schools,
and it's part of the reason why I think they're
good enough without question to go into Penn State and win.

Speaker 4 (07:49):
So that's where your value comes, is that.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
You're going to get a little bit more value on
Michigan having the plus side next to its name as
the road underdog as opposed to taking Penn State where
you're minus one forty. I don't know, that's just something
something smells off again with a bit of the line.
If you flip this around and you play this game
at Michigan, I mean, maybe the numbers are the exact same,

(08:15):
and I like Penn State, so I don't know. Maybe
I'm just taking the underdog regardless in this game.

Speaker 4 (08:19):
But I don't know.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
It just feels like Michigan for a number two team
in the country, they're just way too under the radar
for me right now.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
Yeah, I mean, I don't know that they're even under
my radar, but the way that their offense has just
exploded out of the gate, you know, more than five
goals a game average at this point. I think that's
something that's hard to stop, you know, and they're getting
good goals heading I think Jack ivankovit the way he's

(08:49):
played out of the gate. That was always a question
for Michigan for me. But Penn State still is Penn State.
They've found ways to win a lot of games. That's
a big story for them is the fact that they're
pulling wins out sometimes. But I think this is when
the schedule gets most challenging, you know, for Penn State.

(09:11):
We're going to see what they're made of. I think
this weekend a little bit at home taking on a
good Michigan team. Let's see where this ends up for
Penn State. If I had to pick this one, I
think I'd be taking the value on Michigan and I'm
handling the over come on Let's let's not even you know.

Speaker 4 (09:29):
Know, that was a conversation point. I thought we were
just going to assume.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
I didn't know that they that they didn't have it
at seven point five or eight point five That's where
I'd be open, and I'd still.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Probably be I think the fun thing to watch in
this one might be that Penn State has had to
come from behind with strong third periods all along, and
I guess maybe one question is whether you think Michigan
can outpace them or stifle them in the third.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
Well, I think when it comes to that that every
time you come behind the third period, listening emotionally, and
you know, the caaraderie that you kind of build, and
you know what you have in the locker room is
probably wonderful. You keep playing with fire, you get burned.
And so Penn State has to get some better stars.

(10:17):
They have to find ways to close games better. They
cannot be finding themselves needing a goal in the third
period every game, needing over time to be teams that
they're supposed to be.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
How are they feeling after getting swept last weekend by
Michigan State.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
It's the one team in the country is so obviously
not good, maybe even not you know, don't they don't
have the confidence.

Speaker 5 (10:42):
They're happy to be going home is the net one thing.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
But he gave Michigan State everything they could handle on
the first night. The second night I think the game
gets away from you, but you battle so hard on
night one, night two becomes a challenge. So I look
at State coming off being swept.

Speaker 5 (11:02):
That shouldn't actually add to how hungry they are as well.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
I understand why this line is where it is, but
I still wouldn't be betting Penn State.

Speaker 5 (11:11):
I'd still be taking Michigan.

Speaker 3 (11:13):
The funny thing about Penn State, at least to start
this year, is that for all of the I guess
the hype, there is still a team in there that
has to develop and has to come out of it,
come out of a weekend like the one at Michigan State,
and show that it can overcome that at home.

Speaker 4 (11:34):
And I think you're right, getting home is going to
be the big part of it.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
Where they swept Ohio State and then went out to
Michigan State. To me, this is the first real huge
home series for a Penn State team that has played
big games against big opponents so far, but it hasn't
been at home. But that still doesn't translate necessarily to
the value in the bat.

Speaker 2 (11:59):
And they are aiden Fink, which doesn't help things either.

Speaker 4 (12:03):
But with that, let's take a break.

Speaker 2 (12:04):

Speaker 2 (12:38):
How many teams are in the Men's Frozen four?

Speaker 4 (12:42):
Please leave me.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
We're back with USC ch O Edge Arizona State making
its first visit to the Ralph Engelstad Arena as a
member of the NCCHC, and they are, of course number
six North Dakota Arizona State the underdog at plus one
sixty five minus two fifteen at home for North Dakota

(13:09):
over under in this one is six point five.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
Yeah, I you know, Arizona State's a tough a tough
one for me right now, and it's because I think
that there is growth within this team that I would
like to see come out that that just hasn't been there.
And when you look at the numbers that has that
that have kind of shown up or the team this year,

(13:34):
there there always seems to be just one miss on
the back end, and it's snowballs, and that's where some
of the losses have come from.

Speaker 4 (13:42):
Let me explain a little bit better.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
Look the it goes without saying that when I'm talking
about a goaltender, and I'm talking about necessarily the goaltender
situation at Arizona State right now, that it starts and
ends for me with Connor Hasley, who played for Bentley
and and and really carried Bentley into the National.

Speaker 4 (14:02):
Tournament last year.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
I thought he was the best goaltender in the country
where he caught fire and was a big game goalie
and all that. The fact remains is that the numbers
haven't really been there for him this year. And I
don't even think last week against Colorado College, he was
not the goalie of record. He was not the goalie
in Arizona State went to sam Urban. So if you're

(14:25):
starting to question kind of what happens on the back end,
going to North Dakota is not necessarily the place that
you want to do it not this year at least,
there have been times where I know we've had this
podcast and I said, and North Dakota just doesn't look right.
North Dakota's wrong. North Dakota's not good. There's problems up there. Well,
North Dakota's pretty darn this year seven and three. I'm

(14:48):
looking at it based off of last week, and they
went into Omaha and stomped the MAVs for like, they
just played so well. They have one of the wins
against Minnesota Duluth. This is coming in bad time for
Arizona State and I do not like taking the sun
Devils right now. My bigger issue in the number becomes
that North Dakota's minus two fifteen, So I don't think

(15:10):
you're getting a ton of value there. But that's where
if if you really like UMass, you could parlay it
or parlay maybe something with Penn State.

Speaker 4 (15:20):
Don't.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
I wouldn't, but I might even avoid this one altogether
because I don't think Arizona State is going to win
this game or win one of the win both games
this week, and if anything, they are to split. And
I don't know that It's Friday, and I don't love
the number that's there against North Dakota.

Speaker 5 (15:36):
Yeah, you hit that on the head.

Speaker 1 (15:40):
North Dakota is a heavy paper favorite here and the
line bears itself out. I couldn't find a way to
even pick Arizona State here, and it's nothing to be disrespectful.
You talked about the d issue in net. They have

(16:00):
a lot of good names.

Speaker 4 (16:03):
You know this.

Speaker 5 (16:04):
They've really hit the portal hard.

Speaker 1 (16:06):
They did really well with bringing in players from the
CHL for the AHL from you know, get dimping into
the pro game. But you know, sometimes that doesn't all
just mell together. And I think right now that's a
problem for great powers that this team has not become

(16:27):
a team yet and they're not playing to their potential.
So is this a weekend that suddenly that comes together?

Speaker 5 (16:33):
Who knows.

Speaker 1 (16:34):
I couldn't bet it though, I couldn't bet it with
Dan's money.

Speaker 5 (16:37):
Let's put it that way.

Speaker 1 (16:39):
So I I give me give me North Dakota here
undoubtedly over under, sitting at six and a half.

Speaker 5 (16:49):
Yeah, if I was going to bet that, I'd be
going over.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
Well that leaves us with our pizza money game, and
that's the one where the odds are. So why that
if you are willing to for go pizza, throw your
money on that and maybe have a little.

Speaker 4 (17:03):
Fun with it.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
And it's kind of surprising because it's two ranked teams
and a big rivalry. Number seventeen Colorado College, Number four
Denver playing in their gold Pan series. Their little fun
trophy along the side probably more than fun for the
fans of that. But CC is plus two eighty Denver

(17:25):
is minus three to ninety five over under his five
and a half.

Speaker 3 (17:29):
I'm trying to think of a whipsical way to put
this because the one time I said I'm not taking
the pizza bet, I'm pretty sure that the pizza bet hit.
I'm almost positive that at this point I should just
keep betting on the throwing the pizza away.

Speaker 4 (17:47):
Plus, I don't need the pizza. The pizza is bad
for me.

Speaker 3 (17:53):
Look, I love CCI, I always have in terms of
just the way that they play the game. They have
some of these inherent advantages that make them an underrated
piece of the NCCHC. I think what they've built there
is impressive. I really like them to get the odds

(18:15):
with Denver's fourth in the country, and I know they're
picking up some steam lately, and they've been playing well
and and.

Speaker 4 (18:21):
All this other stuff.

Speaker 3 (18:22):
But I'm still not there on them being number four
in the country and good enough to claim all of that.
So you know what, throw an extra topping of two down,
give me Colorado College. Let's go, let's go hunting, an
extra artro. Let's get if we're gonna go pizza, pizza,
let's go CEC. That's my that's my thing for the

(18:45):
That was terrible. You know what that that can't even
get edited out. That's how bad that statement was.

Speaker 5 (18:51):
But I'm still taking Colorado College surprising. It can't be
edited out. That's that's a fact. Now, you know.

Speaker 1 (18:59):
I I'm with you here. If you're going to give
me this much value on CC, I got to take CC.
You know, this is a team. You've got a good
goaltender tender and Cadenen Berricko. You've got a legit top six,
you know. And I don't think that there's any fear
for a CEC going into a rivalry game. So it's

(19:22):
not disrespect. But you know, Denver, Denver has the pieces,
they have the horses. It's a really good team. I
haven't seen anything that says that Denver is Michigan State
or Denver is Michigan, and you know these one loss
teams out there that that you know, can you know,
dominate an opponent.

Speaker 5 (19:42):
Right now, I respect.

Speaker 1 (19:44):
Denver, but for the value give me cc, I would
actually I forgo the pizza this week as well.

Speaker 3 (19:50):
Isn't it isn't it always funny that we look at
Denver and say, I just don't see it yet. I'm
not quite sure what in that year every year and now,
so what that means is if do you have a
futures bet right now? I bet Denver to win the
national championship based on what we just said, because that's
I said that. A couple of years ago they won
a national championship.

Speaker 4 (20:07):
I said it.

Speaker 3 (20:08):
Last year they went to the Frozen Four, and I'm
saying it again. So I don't know. Maybe they have
a maybe they have a Dan Rubin dartboard in the
locker room or something.

Speaker 2 (20:14):
At this rate, David still dance Team's ready for the playoffs, right.

Speaker 3 (20:20):
I was gonna say still wouldn't take them on Friday.
I still would take Colorado College. But that's not the well.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
With that, we're going to wrap things up for this week.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
