Speaker 2 (00:12):
Welcome to usccho Edge for Friday, October tenth, twenty twenty five.
I'm Ed Trevsker alongside Jim Conley and Dan Rubin. Well, guys,
when don't we just hop right in number nine? Michigan
is at number seven. Providence Michigan is favored at minus
one sixty six. Providence at home is a slight underdog

(00:34):
at plus one thirty and the over under on this
one is six and a half.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
No offense to a good friend, Rick Gotkin and Mercy Hurst.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
But I think that Michigan is still scoring goals from
last weekend, then they're not done. Like, what did they
score twenty nineteen goals? Last eighteen goals? I mean, that's
kind of a crazy offense to start the season with.
So that really makes this, in my mind, a little
bit unpredictable. We know Providence is a very good team,

(01:05):
a strong team. They've only played an exhibition. I don't
like to put any anything into exhibitions because you don't
know who's playing, how much of the game, and whatnot.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
But they played Quinnipiac.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
That's a pretty good team, and they did win the
exhibition game, so maybe I.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Should at least give some credence to that.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
But I'm gonna go with Michigan here because of their
goal scoring. If that offense can keep popping them like
they did last weekend, this is a really dangerous team
this season.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
The fact that when you look at the lines, it
more or less tells you how the perception is going
into a game, meaning that if you look at Michigan
as a as a favorite, you're thinking that Michigan is
slightly ahead based on the numbers. It doesn't mean that
you don't think Providence can win, but it's trying to
entice some of the action and kind of the perception
of where your team is at.

Speaker 5 (01:59):
Least heading into that game. I think a big.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
Bulk of why Michigan is a favorite is because Michigan
played last week and they and they did so exceptionally well.
And there's just no data on Providence except for last year,
which you know ended in the tournament. So I think
I actually like Providence here. Part of the reason is
that I think the value on Providence is greater. It
doesn't mean I think Providence is gonna, you know, go

(02:24):
out oh. Ruben says, it's a lot that Providence is
going to win this game. It's more of the fact
that I think you find value in your bets because
you look at Providence at home, which I know I
love home underdogs in general, the travel aspect of Michigan
coming east, which the different components that go into it.
The one thing I will say that I like is
that I also maybe kind of liked the.

Speaker 5 (02:45):
Over and the first part of the season.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
I know Providence plays more defensive style, but at six
and a half, you know that's a really high number.
But like you said, Michigan is going to score goals,
and I think you get to a four to three
game in this and you hit the over.

Speaker 5 (02:57):
So it's a well placed number. But I like the
over there.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
This is actually where I would have stayed away from
the over under here because you have two different types
of styles. You have Michigan that proved last week that
boys and they score, and their offense is going to
be what kind of carries them, I think, as opposed
to Providence, and I think really is about defense first
and if they're going to win, it's going to be
a low scoring game.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
So I don't I this is a stay away.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
I said last week early season, always pumped the over.
I do think that the over could and maybe will
hid in this game. But I just if Providence is
going to win this game. So if you like Providence,
I think you have to light the under as well.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
This over is about a goal higher than typical for
the beginning of the season. Do you attribute that pretty
much all to what Michigan did last weekend?

Speaker 5 (03:50):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (03:53):
Yeah, I mean when you're you're popping that many goals,
I mean if Providence was Arizona State, this might be
an eight and a half. You know, it's you're talking
about a Providence scene that plays it. You know, can
play a defense and first style.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
They're known for good goaltending, good defense.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
So I think that if you had an even more
offensively focused team.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
One last and tangible Schneider Arena, compact, tight, loud, that's where.

Speaker 4 (04:20):
I like Providence as a home underdog is. I do
think early in the season, especially in the Big Ten,
where there are where the buildings are a little bit
more spacious, where you look at Mariucci, I know that
I think Penn State's a little more compact. I know
that that doesn't really matter as much when you're talking
just everything about it's a little bit more unique than

(04:41):
if you had Michigan coming.

Speaker 5 (04:42):
To one of the Boston schools.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
So that's that's kind of why I look at the
value on Providence and I look at the underdog home
underdog with the friars and say, that's where I think
you make you want to.

Speaker 5 (04:54):
Cut your teeth.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Well, talking about atmosphere, let's go out to North Dakota.
Ralph Engelstat Arena will be hopping for this season opener
Saint Thomas visits North Dakota. They will be future NCCHC
rivals next year. Saint Thomas a big underdog plus two

(05:15):
forty rank number nineteen this week number ten. North Dakota
is minus three point thirty. The over under the cautious
early season five point five is this.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Is one where I'm actually having a pretty tough time
trying to make any sort of an estimation on this game.
I like Saint Thomas and there's there's a lot to
like about them, so I think that the value here,
I like the value. But Ralph Englestat Arena, you go
and you're talking about the home opener. I mean, this

(05:48):
is a place that packed in eleven thousand people for
an exhibition.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Game last week and this.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
If I had to bet this one, I think I
would go with the value and say, Thomas, this is
one that I don't I don't love. I just think
that you know, there's no value on North Dakota to
take them as the whole favorite. Maybe you put them
into a same game parlay or some sort of another
parlay that you can you can get some some value

(06:16):
on that North Dakota number. But I'd go Saint Thomas
here if I if I had to bet.

Speaker 4 (06:21):
This, Yeah, I agree, I think Saint Thomas before you
even break down the numbers, that number on North Dakota
at home against a team that is a rising kind
of reputational power in college hockey.

Speaker 5 (06:35):
Like a lot of people are.

Speaker 4 (06:35):
Getting on the Saint Thomas bandwagon and what they've done.
It is just not It's not there for me in
terms of wanting to take North Dakota against that team
at home. The one other part of it is that
for all that we will talk about the ralph and
college hockey and the Wall, and in all that that,
North Dakota brings to the table as as arguably the

(06:56):
greatest home ice advantage in college hockey. Ten and seven
each two of the last three years at home. So
the home ice advantage, Wow, that is over five hundred.
And I know there are teams that would probably killed
to have ten wins at home. It's not as pronounced
maybe as the reputation holds.

Speaker 5 (07:15):
So I don't find the value on.

Speaker 4 (07:17):
North Dakota, so I stay away because I also don't
know that Saint Thomas early in the season is going
to win this. I don't know that St. Thomas going
into the NCCHC is going to be that immediate splash
that I want them to be next year. So I
do like North Dakota to win, but I don't like
North Dakota to bet.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
Well with that will take a pause.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
We'll come back with a couple more games. This is
usccho Edge. More of usccho Edge. Last weekend was a
big pair of games at Arizona State's Mullet Arena as
they hosted Penn State for Gavin McKenna's debut. Arizona State

(07:57):
held leads in both games, but ended up getting swept.
This weekend, this Friday night, they're taking on Notre Dame.
It's number fifteen Arizona and a Notre Dame squad with
a brand new head coach Brock Shane behind the bench.
Plus one thirty for Notre Dame, minus one sixty six
for Arizona State, not huge underdogs and not unexpected six

(08:20):
and a half for the over under.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
I think we're just going to start like teams like
Arizona State and Penn State.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
Throw Michigan in there.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
We're just going to start all over unders at six
point five this year.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
And we'll just go off from there.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
That's I think that's how the AI is going to approcess.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
I really like the sun Devils here.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
They played parts of two great hockey games last weekend.
They were in position to win both games both nights.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Unfortunately came out on the wrong side.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
Against a team that at the end, we're going to
realize this Penn State team is really good. So when
I look at this one, I think Arizona State should
they deserve to be a favorite here, a slight favorite
at home.

Speaker 3 (09:08):
I think that they can carry this one.

Speaker 1 (09:11):
In terms of the over under here again, I'm staying
away again it goes in tape.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
Notre Dame is going to win this game. It's probably
going to be a three to two or three one game.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
So I'm not in love with getting over six and
a half seven and eight nine for goals. Even early
in the season, it can be tough to get to, so.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
I would stay away from that. But I like the
Arizona State Now.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
I'll tell you if you're looking for some to try
to make things a little bit higher in value, if
you want to take Arizona State and North Dakota in
a two team parlay, that at least would get you
a little bit more value with it.

Speaker 4 (09:49):
I remember Brock Shane when he was the assistant head
assistant coach at Holy Cross in the mid twenty tens,
and those teams were really good at scoring goals.

Speaker 5 (10:00):
I mean you have to.

Speaker 4 (10:01):
Take with a grain of salt that Atlanta Cockey was
a very different league back then in Atlantic hockey teams
in terms of scoring goals. That was if you were
good Atlanta Cockey team, you got to one hundred goals,
no problem. So but I'm also throwing in there that
he's a good offensive coach. He comes from from systems
that know how to do that, Notre Dame, the Big Ten.
Those teams are always offensive minded. So I've really liked

(10:22):
the over I like that this is going to probably
head over and both goalies are probably gonna have to
make some ten bel saves to win the game anyway.
So I like the fact that this is going to
be a high scoring game with still some.

Speaker 5 (10:37):
Good goaltending, if that makes sense.

Speaker 4 (10:40):
That said, I also don't necessarily like Notre Dame to win,
but I think you're right that if Arizona State's the favorite,
you can raise their value by parlaying them with much
more of a guarantee type win out of a team
like and when I say guarantee, it's the lower odds
where you can maybe play the odds a bit and
get some out of a team like North Dakota if

(11:02):
you if you're too believe.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
How much of the money line is influenced by name
recognition and the huge fan base of Notre Dame. This
seems a lot closer than I would have expected.

Speaker 5 (11:14):
I think a good amount.

Speaker 4 (11:16):
Uh. And I'll actually kind of go back to North
Dakota too, where I think the odds are skewed because
of North Dakota's recognition in college hockey. So I think
Notre Dame in terms of hockey is going to be
skewed enough that it gives them better odds The one
thing I will say is that against Arizona State, I
don't think it's going to skew as much as if
they were playing one of those Division one.

Speaker 5 (11:37):
Only hockey schools like that.

Speaker 4 (11:39):
That the casual person scrolling through draft gangs and sees
Notre Dame playing I don't know, pick aol BMIGI State
and it says, oh, there's no way Notre Dame is
going to lose to Notre Dame with all of its
Notre Dame, they're playing Saint Lawrence, they're playing BIMIGI, They're
playing a team that you don't necessarily recognize as much.
Arizona State maybe mitigates that little bit. That said, I

(12:02):
do think Notre Dame gets a little bit of the
benefit in the.

Speaker 5 (12:06):
Odds as they are bet on.

Speaker 4 (12:08):
So whatever this opened up at the beginning of the week,
there's going to be action on Notre Dame that pulls
them a little further to try and get more money
on Arizona State.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
I think when you look at name recognition, especially early
in the season, I feel like the algorithms really do
sway toward the name recognition. You just know that Notre
Dame is going to take more money. Let's just give
let's just sway this line a little bit toward Notre Dame.
Even if we realize that Notre Dame is it should

(12:41):
be a slight, if not a significant underdog.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
North Dakota.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
We're there's supposed to be a slight favorite over Saint Thomas.
Let's give them some juice because we know that they
take seventy percent of the bats every time they play.
So I think that there is some sort of an
algorithm that probably early season, when you don't have enough
data points from a season to back up your line,
you tend to use that algorithm lean on the name

(13:07):
recognition to boost up a team's odds.

Speaker 2 (13:10):
Well, we've got one more and it's our pizza twenty
bucks that you wouldn't put on a pizza, that you
might put on a game just to see if you
might make some money because it would be fun.

Speaker 3 (13:22):
That's the game.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
That's the game with big odds, and you know, this
may be one of the better pizza money bets we'll
have all season. It's Denver at air Force. Denver is
minus six hundred. Air Force the home underdogs. It's just
going to say air Force has an upset or two
every season, and it's always a great atmosphere at the

(13:45):
cadet Ice Arena, so this might be a fun one.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
Well, I had to look up some historical stats here.
The all time record for Denver against air Force is.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
Forty one four in.

Speaker 1 (14:01):
Now I say all of that, the last seven games
have gone all in favor of Denver, regardless of where
they are played. I'm a big fan of these pizza
money bets. I think that they certainly give a little
bit of interest.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
There's something to find a way.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
Numbers just don't support even throwing pizza money at this one.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
And this is no respect to disrespect. I'm sorry to
air Force.

Speaker 1 (14:30):
This is just Denver wins this matchup most times, So I'll.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
Keep the twenty bucks in my pocket.

Speaker 4 (14:39):
Last time air Force beat Denver, if I'm reading this right,
was twenty fifteen October twenty fifteen, So think about what
you were doing in twenty fifteen, and think about the
fact that that's the last time and it took overtime.
So I don't I mean, it's a pizza money bet,
right like it's the I got twenty bucks.

Speaker 5 (15:00):
Let's roll it, Let's roll the dice. Let's have some
fun with it.

Speaker 4 (15:03):
Sure, why not let's throw it down, and you're not
afraid to just flush twenty bucks down the drain.

Speaker 5 (15:08):
I say go for it, because that's kind of the
point of it.

Speaker 4 (15:11):
That said, I, you're right, air Force always gets that
one upset, the one team that you know they I
don't know they're air Force. It's hard to root again.
I mean, if you're betting against air Force, aren't you
betting against the United States of America. Like, you can't
do that if you're unless you're a Canadian person, you
can't bet against the Air Force Academy. You can't bet
against the American Service Academy.

Speaker 5 (15:33):
You gotta take them. So why not throw it down,
do your.

Speaker 4 (15:36):
Patriotic duty bet on a service academy this weekend.

Speaker 1 (15:41):
I think we need to have a running total of
Dan's money in his pocket for pizza, and Jim's money
is from pizza and his.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
Popp becomes season end.

Speaker 5 (15:50):
I'm just glad that I did it well. I guess
now I'm gonna break it.

Speaker 4 (15:52):
But I would say I would almost wait for the
odds to come out on Saturday if you want to
bet against Denver, because they've got because Bentley's going out
out there for the weekend from from Massachusetts, and they've
got Colorado College and Denver in reverse. And if you
want an upset Coe, going out to Colorado defending conference
champion maybe makes more sense than that, But you're.

Speaker 5 (16:11):
Also not going to get the same type of odds.

Speaker 4 (16:13):
But you know that's just my Yeah, I know, that's yes,
me making a Bentley reference on my first episode of
the season.

Speaker 5 (16:19):
Yeah, we all know that's what was going to happen.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
You know we didn't.

Speaker 2 (16:22):
We didn't have It's not a bad bet if you
want to wait, we didn't have odds for CC and Bentley.
But Bentley will give them a good game for sure.
You talk about rooting against the USA, now you see
Air Force a couple of times a year, Army a
couple of times a year, broadcasting for Bentley, me broadcasting
for rat and being in alum I'm rooting against the

(16:45):
US four games a year anyway, So you know, I
guess I could make it five if I had to.

Speaker 4 (16:53):
Well, all I ever say is that's one of my
favorite times of year when the students who normally would
chant anything and everything at an opposing team. And I've
seen this not just in Atlantic hockey buildings, all of
a sudden, they just stop chanting half the stuff that
they do because they realize that, like, maybe we shouldn't
be telling guys who are serving the country that they

(17:13):
are you know, every name in the building. It's kind
of funny when you see some students and they're like, ah,
this feels kind.

Speaker 2 (17:19):
Of potentially serving the country until dad gets you to transfer.

Speaker 5 (17:22):
But that's well, let's wrap it up here.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
