Speaker 2 (00:12):
Welcome to Uscho Edge For Friday, October thirty first, twenty
twenty five, I met Trevska alongside Jim Connolly and Dan Rubin.
Four games to look at as usual, including our pizza
money game, and a little fun discussion about the pizza
money game, because you could have walked away with enough

(00:33):
for four or five toppings and maybe an extra pizza
if you'd bet on that one. But when we start
out with a couple of games in the East, and
the first one we have is Boston University at Maine,
five and a half is the over under BU is
the favorite on the road minus one forty five, Maine
a bit of an underdog at home at plus one fourteen.

(00:55):
And Maine had a tough weekend at home last weekend
with Colegate losing one game and winning the other in overtime,
both three to two scores. I wonder how much that
is figuring into this. I would think a lot.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
And I'm gonna be calling this game on Saturday night
for unnessing. So have talked to both coaches, and you know,
when I go back to what Ben Barr talked about,
it is really just about consistency. You know, the effort
has to be there, you have to get sixteen minutes
of playing.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
And you know, he said, they've.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
Had some really brilliant showings at time, the comeback against
Coldy Eate lost Saturdays one. They had a great start
against Quinnipiac in Game one but didn't hold on and
end up being a full four tigh. So there's been
good signs for this Main team that they are young
and so be you right now as a stronger team.

(01:49):
I think even on the road of minus one forty five,
I think that's probably the right line there.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
I still think Main's a tough place to play. I
think if you.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Had to, you know, ask me to pick this one,
I'm going to go Maine here, probably at home, and
take the value plus one fourteen.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
You know, I love home underdogs in general, and that's
going to be a bit of a theme as we
as we go across the spectrum today. And what I
think about Maine specifically is that Maine the last two
years has lost a full combined four games at Alphond
The year before that they had only lost seven, So
you know they're getting they're very very good home team.

(02:29):
The numbers back up exactly on their record, what we
would think about Maine at home.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
For BEU going to Maine, I think that takes that's
about a.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
Goal advantage for Maine, right like. That's that's kind of
how I feel about this game in general. So from
a money line pick them standpoint, I can't pick against
Maine at home, specific coming off a weekend in which
they also had a loss.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
BU. The numbers are a bit skewed.

Speaker 4 (02:55):
So if you're gonna look at the numbers and say
where does BEU land versus Maine right now, the numbers
are going to skew because BU gave up a ton
of goals in one game against Connecticut last week. They've also, though,
given up eight goals in a weekend against Michigan State,
so there are gaps and what BU does defensively that
I think we're there last year at the beginning, But

(03:16):
I like Maine where it's at right now. I think
that's a well placed number given what we would have
expected coming out of the week, at least. As for
over under at five and a half, I don't mind
the under here five and a half, I think you
can get to a four to two game based on
what we've seen in the numbers, and I think an
empty net goal makes it happen. But I also think
there's value on taking me under specifically because I think

(03:38):
both of these teams are a little bit better defensively
than what the numbers have.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
So I can see this being a three to one.

Speaker 4 (03:44):
Type of game specifically on Friday, and then Saturday maybe
is the game that has more goals.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
When we talk about BU are they a little bit
inconsistent right now? You talk about up and down? They
had common opponents with Colegate a six to two win
in a two to tie, and then the weekend with
u Khon. Are they hit or miss right now? Or
are they still finding themselves?

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Maybe maybe a little bit.

Speaker 5 (04:10):
But I think both of these teams maybe when you're
you're looking at either one, they're they're both at kind
of and I'm not gonna say identity crisis, but trying
to find themselves a little bit.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
The team identity trying to find a way to get
into that as this year starts off here. So I
look at both of these teams as not having consistency yet,
and that's that's why I don't have the problem, you know,
thinking about picking Maine at home.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
I actually like.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
The thought that a home underdog could win in this one,
just because they you know, neither team has shown me
that they can just absolutely.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Go out all a weekend.

Speaker 5 (04:50):
So let's see if either one of them can make
a statement this weekend.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Another game in the East is Cornell at UMass number twenty.
Big Red at the number thirteen minute men five and
a half is the over under on this one. Cornell
the underdog at plus one thirty and you Mass the
favorite at home at minus won sixty six. And what
I've got to ask in this one, U Mass already

(05:16):
with seven games under its spelt, and this is the
first one for the IVY League Cornell team. Boy, that's
that's got to figure into this a lot.

Speaker 6 (05:25):
Yeah yeah, I mean at this point, I look at it,
you almos flip a coin here, because you know that
I would have I would make Cornell a favorite here
if this series was played in March, just based on
preseason you know, expectations for each team. Now we're playing
it when it's Cornell's first game, I think that kind

(05:47):
of definitely sways in you Mass's favorite. So even though
I don't like the price of minus one sixty six,
if I had to pick here, I'd probably be taking
the team that's played more games, that's, you know, that
has some experiences season under their belt, So I'd.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Be going with U Mass here.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
I don't love the number though at minus one sixty
second no, And this.

Speaker 4 (06:09):
Is one of those games that I think we might
want to parlay a bit on UMass and pair them
somewhere minus one sixty six. The biggest thing that I
kind of look at in this game is that the
number sits where it does because we just don't know
anything about Cornell, and even past experiences from Cornell changes
a bit. Because Mike Schaffer is fully retired at this point,

(06:30):
Casey Jones, it's now his program. They've had a lot
of turnover over the last couple of years with some
of the guys.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Who are now gone.

Speaker 4 (06:38):
New goaltender knew everything in Cornell really to start things out.
But a team that historically has been able to make
that work and transition through some of its.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Bigger losses over the course of the year.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
And looking at last year, even if you're going to
factor in the number as it doesn't really take into
account the fact that Cornell was hurt most of the year.
It dealt with a lot of injuries, so you're going
to get plus one is kind of if Cornell had
entered next week.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
If we if we put this next week and.

Speaker 4 (07:05):
Cornell's zero to two, it's probably plus one sixty five.
If we put this next week in Cornell's two and zero,
then it's probably closer to plus one oh five or
plus one ten uh for you Mass though, And that's
really the biggest thing. I don't think an IVY League
team coming out at the first week end of the
season is going to be fully ready.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
They don't really know what they're going to have.

Speaker 4 (07:25):
It's the if you go back over the last few years,
it's been a major thing that happens to the ivys
that that one of them loses a non its first
non conference game or its first conference game. However, it
opens against a team with a lot of experience. If
I'm going to look at picking Cornell, I'm also looking
a bit to the over because U. Mass has had
troubled keeping teams out of its net the last four weeks,

(07:49):
three weeks whatever it's been. Northeastern dropped four, Bentley dropped four,
took them to overtime and had a lead In that game,
Omaha had nine goals over two games. It was a split.
Earlier this season, Northern Michigan scored three. UMass is having
a problem right now and back keeping teams out of
its net.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
So I think the over is in play.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
If you like Cornell, I don't think this is going
to go under, let's put it that way. But if
I'm going to pick you Mass, the numbers just really
aren't there. So that's maybe where if I really like
bu I can parlay the two of them together and
get better odds out of both of those teams.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Well, we've got two more games to look at both
out in the West, including our Pizza Money game, and
we'll do that when usccho edge continues. We're back with
usccho Edge. Our first game is a big matchup in
the CCCH with a long time dominant team from that

(08:48):
league and one that is going to depart the league
after this season. Minnesota State ranked number eighteen at number nineteen,
Saint Thomas five and a half is the over under
Minnesota is the road favor at minus one fifty four,
and Saint Thomas is an underdog at home at plus
one twenty.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
Here we go Dan another home dog. I actually like,
I like Saint Thomas here.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
Again, they gave Providence everything they could handle last weekend.
Providence didn't come out with a tie and a win
out of that one. But I think that Saint Thomas
is playing pretty well. You know, Minnesota State, I'm not
taking anything away from them. Luke Strand's team is is
strong as well. But I think just at home a

(09:32):
little bit of value on Saint Thomas. I like, I
like the Tommys here. Give me, give me a Saint
Thomas here at home.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (09:39):
I think when you look at at Minnesota State too,
you know what you're going to get, right, You're you're
going to get a team that is going to come
play well, not give up a lot of goals, play
very well in front of its net. Nothing has really
changed over the last decade, even with a coaching change
in there, and and Luke Strand is is a phenomenal coach.
I think when you look at at everything that goes

(10:01):
into this game, there's a right line. There's a correct
line in saying minus one fifty four in Minnesota State,
largely because also when you look at a team that's
three one and two and you're taking on a team
that's two four and one. Now, that's where the value
kind of shows up is at home, which I think
last week kind of illustrated that there is a real
home ice advantage in the Twin Cities and it's maybe

(10:24):
not at Minnesota right now. And I think that the
Tommies played well last week against Providence. I think that
even in the loss, the seven to four loss, they
looked very good at times. It just got away from
them over the span of I think like a minute
and a half in the second period where where Providence
got three goals of like ninety seconds. So that's where

(10:46):
I'm looking at the Tommies and saying, it's a conference game,
it's at home, the home dog, that's where you're getting
your value.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
So I like the Tommies.

Speaker 4 (10:55):
I don't know that I like them if this were less,
if they were a home favorite, or pick them, but
I like them as a home underdog.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Now we're going to get to our pizza money game
at number three Western Michigan, fresh off of a home
and a home with Michigan at Saint Cloud's State. Two
pretty good teams, but this is the one with the
whitest odds and last week we had one where the
team that was the underdog prevailed in both games. Minnesota Duluth,

(11:24):
which is off to a tear, jumped all the way
to number ten, maybe unexpected this far in the season.
What was it about that game? What stood out that
made that so dominant for Minnesota Duluth And why did
we lean in that direction?

Speaker 3 (11:43):
I just think that line looked so far off.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
We knew that Minnesota's Luth had played well over their
first six games, sitting there at five and one, and
Minnesota was the opposite. They had struggled, They really found,
you know, they'd almost found ways to not win games,
to either drop a game later or find you know,
you're talking about finding some wayte tie games that could
have been wins. I think that that, you know, right now,

(12:09):
I just don't think that Minnesota's playing well. I saw
that as extreme value on Duluth, you know, But I
look at this one. Here we have Western Michigan and
Saint Cloud, and I just I see value for Saint Cloud.
But I just look at Western Michigan right now, the
way they're playing, and they gave Michigan headaches last weekend.

(12:32):
I know that, you know, I thought that Michigan's goaltender
was phenomenal last Thursday Friday. I thought, going back into Kalamazoo,
you saw the Western Michigan team that was defending a
national championship.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
So I think we look at Western.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
I even though it seems that is a really tight
odds here, Hey, just take your twenty bucks and throw
it on Saint Cloud here.

Speaker 3 (12:54):
I'd save mine.

Speaker 1 (12:55):
I'm going to go back to being conservative, even though
I now have a bank role. I'm going to keep
my bank row conservative.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
I wouldn't bet this one. I would I would buy
the pizza.

Speaker 4 (13:04):
Or this in this case isn't funny how when I
start when I win one of these. Now I realized
that when like oh, based off the numbers, if I
had thrown the pizza money down, I'd have like this
in a bankroll. Now, I don't really want to bet
the pizza money underdog and start firing my pizza money
down because.

Speaker 3 (13:20):
I'm not gonna lie. I don't. I don't love Saint
Cloud here.

Speaker 4 (13:23):
And even though it's a home underdog, which is my
which is my m so that if I'm if I'm
sticking to my guns on this one, if I'm sticking
to my strategy. I'm looking at Saint Cloud and I'm
saying five and two at home against Western Michigan, Saint
Cloud is way too good.

Speaker 3 (13:41):
Of a team. Uh historically, Brett Larson, too good of
a coach.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
There's too many factors in here that make me look
at Saint Cloud and say I don't want to take
Western Michigan. I want Saint Cloud. The number for me
is just maybe a little bit too low. I would
love to take Saint Cloud at like a US two
fifteen or plus two to twenty five under plus one
ninety five. I think this year at this point is

(14:07):
a little too too good for a little bit too
good of a of a number in this line. It's
well placed because Saint Cloud frankly has not beaten anybody
this year. At five and two, they're coming off a
sweep against Alaska Anchorage.

Speaker 3 (14:21):
They split with Vermont at home.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
Vermont not necessarily the Hockey East team that is going
to help you in the NPI later on down the
line based on previous experiences. Bimigi State, I think is
a good team, but again you're not on the caliber
of Western Michigan. And before that, you're you're I think
looking at what the exhibition season at the beginning of

(14:46):
the season. So I'm not sure if you take anything
from any of that stuff. So this is really the
first test of looking at Saint Cloud and saying, I
really want Saint Cloud and I really want to take
the money.

Speaker 3 (14:58):
I think I'm going to hold back this time.

Speaker 4 (15:00):
I think I'm not gonna bet on Western Michigan. I
just think I'm going to buy a pizza. Plus, since
I know I'm taking a trip down to New York,
the pizza is probably going to be better than down
there than where I am up here in Massachusetts. But
I think I like Western Michigan, especially given the way
that they're playing right now.

Speaker 3 (15:17):
I tell you what, I do kind of like the
over here five and a half.

Speaker 4 (15:20):
I think this one's going to get up and down.
I think this one's gonna this one's gonna light the
lamp a bit. I do not see this being a
four to two game. I see this being one of
those possibly six two, seven to three. Like, I think
both of these teams are going to get after it,
and but I think Western Michigan in that situation is.

Speaker 3 (15:37):
Going to win.

Speaker 4 (15:38):
And look that that's their mo right, I keep using
that term. They scored six against Lowell, they scored five
against Michigan, they scored six against Faris, they scored seven
against the under eighteen team in an exhibition.

Speaker 3 (15:52):
So I think the over in Western Michigan, I'm not.

Speaker 4 (15:57):
I would think I'm just buying a New York pie
this week bringing it home with me.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
You could. Here's my only here's my only issue on
the over there.

Speaker 1 (16:07):
It's the fact that all those numbers you read off
for Western Michigan happened on the second game of the weekend.
We're still talking about Friday night, first game of the weekend.
When Western has been in those situations, those numbers have
been lower. You had a two to one against Lowe,
you had a three to two game to open the season.
You had a three nothing game last Thursday against Michigan.

(16:28):
So I kind of look back at Western and say, yeah,
I get it that they can put the puck in
the net, not in the first game or a weekend
series typically, So I think I would have to actually
even I would stay awake from even the over under here.
This is one. I'm just keeping my money in my pocket,
you know. I dominoes, you can get two pizzas for that.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
And don't forget Dan and New York. You can walk
in places and just get a slice.

Speaker 3 (16:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (16:55):
The problem is for me if slice is usually like
half a pizza.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
Well, yeah, it can't be.

Speaker 4 (17:01):
There's no such thing as I just need one slice.
And this is this is I'm gonna I'm gonna go
crazy that street meet. You compare the two of those together.
You get a falafel on the street after you get
the pizza.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
I wonder why. I'm uh, I've got specialists telling me
I need to lose weight these days.

Speaker 2 (17:17):
Well, and then of course that's like spending forty bucks
not twenty.

Speaker 3 (17:21):
Hey, we got the backroll from last week. We could
we could blow this on pizza and falaffel. There we go.

Speaker 2 (17:26):
