Welcome to us Cho Edge for Friday, December fifth, twenty
twenty five. I met Tresscir alongside Jim Connelly, and we're
going to look at some games going on around college
hockey and what the betting lines are on them. This
episode is sponsored by the NCAA Division one Frozen four
April ninth and eleventh in Las Vegas. Visit NCAA dot
(00:36):
com slash m Frozen four for tickets. Well, not a
lot of games on the betting lines, and maybe everybody's
busy with college football or things like that. Plus there's
a Thursday game that may affect what happens on Friday.
But we've got some to look at, some big games too, Jim,
and the first one we're going to look at is
in the NCCHC. We're number four a Resurger Minnesota Duluth
(01:01):
is at number seven Western Michigan. Minnesota Duluth is plus
one fifty four. Western Michigan is a minus two hundred.
And the first thing that hits me on this is
this a little reputation from the last couple of seasons
carrying over.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Feels like it is almost a disrespect of Minnesota Duluth.
They've had a great season's date. They're number four right
now on the poll. They're going in to play the
number seventeen. Granted they're depending national champs. I get it,
but they've had some struggles along the way this season.
So I don't feel like this is an easy game
at in any sorts. But that's what the line would
(01:39):
say minus two hundred. You're almost thinking that that should
be a slam dunk. I don't see it, you know,
I think it goes two ways. If this is a
Minnesota's Dalut type game, you.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
Know, the low event, a lot of board battles.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
That plus money looks really attractive right now, So that's
where I look. In terms of goals under five and
a half, I don't see it's possible. I don't like
the bet on that, So if I was going to
bet the over under, i'd have to take the over here.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
Five and a half's just too low.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Yeah, it seems like these are teams that can score.
In fact, it seems like everybody can score. I say that,
and then we'll have the two to one game or
something like that that comes along too.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
Because goalies are so good.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
This is a key one for the NCCHC, though the
Luth can be I don't know if anybody was really
looking in Minnesota the Luth to be in the mix
of it, but they could be a contender and a
spoiler at the same time right now.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Yeah, I mean, especially if they get to play the
game that they want to play. If this turns into
a defensive style game, that's their game. So I guess
when you're looking at the over under two ed, I
guess that's something that you can look at correlation. If
you're going to take Minnesota Duluth, you might want to
think about the under if you're gonna If you're thinking
Western can win this one, I think I think you're
(03:00):
looking at maybe a four to three five three type
of game.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
How about home iice advantage as far as crowds, that's
got to lean heavily towards Western in this one.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
Yeah, I mean loss, it is just it's lost. Lost.
It is what it is. Great atmosphere, tough place to play.
You know, they call it the Zoo for a good reason.
It's really difficult to win there.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
So I do understand that that probably factors into this
line a little bit. I still like the money you're
getting on minnesot duluthe. If you're telling me that I
can bet the number four team in the country and
get plus money plus one fifty four, I like that.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
Well.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Another game that's kind of interesting odds wise to us
is number two Wisconsin at Notre Dame. And talk about resurgent.
That was sort of a bump in the road for
a minute or for Wisconsin last year, and here they
are right back up to number two.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
Over under on this one is six and a half.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
Wisconsin is MOUs one seventy five and Notre Dame is
plus one thirty five. And when I looked at that,
I said, wow, I would have thought Notre Dame would
be a lot bigger home underdog than that.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Yeah, I'm surprised by this line a little bit. It's
giving too much credit for home ice here.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
For Notre Dame. This is a Notre Dame team that's
had its struggles. They've had some good moments, you know.
I look at last week. They got that win on
the road at Merrimack. That's a good win.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
They hung in there against Boston College too last Friday,
but ultimately came out.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
On the wrong end. Well, I just see like Wisconsin.
Their offense is cranking right now.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Over for a game, their defense under two and a half.
A game that's a big enough to parential right there
that I'd be taking the.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Badgers all day. I don't care that this game is
in South Bend.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
I think that this is you know, one where Wisconsin
it should be a much heavier favorite.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
It seems like Mike case Things has turned things around
for the Badgers last year or was kind of a
tough one early on. I think we kept leaning toward
Wisconsin till it finally was clear it was a down
year for them, but they seem to be easily a
favorite in any game that they're going to take on
this year.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Now. I think that they have the personnel right now.
You know Christian Fitzgerald right now.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
I think it's just he's scoring and when you're getting
the goals, and it's not just one player, it's multiple players,
and it's having it's not having one player with thirty,
it's having a bunch of guys with fifteen and twenty
right now, and that's those are the types of numbers
when you're talking about an offense that can crank.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Wisconsin is just scoring in bunches right now.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Coming up, we're going to take a look at a

unh at Maine. But a reminder, we're also on video

Speaker 2 (06:56):
We're back with usccho edge. This is probably the game
of the week. If it's not the game of the week,
I don't know what you're watching. In college hockey, number
one Michigan, which took over that position from Michigan State.
Michigan State is number three, playing in East Lansing on
Friday night, very close. Michigan is a slight favorite at
(07:20):
plus one hundred, Michigan State a slight home underdog at
minus one thirty over under a six and a half,
and if they put it at seven and a half,
I wouldn't have laughed at.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
It, maybe a little to consider it right.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
If this was seven and a half, you'd be thinking, now,
that's probably about the right number.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
That's why I'd be hammering over here. Michigan.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
Their offense is cranking right now, and that's what you
have to remember. And then Michigan Michigan State. They're not
as explosive as Michigan on paper, but you know they
had that balance attack, really good goals heading from Trey
Augustine this year. So I look at this as you know,
it's that unstoppable force, you know, versus the immovable object
type of situation here. The Michigan scoring numbers, they're video
(08:03):
game level at this point, you know, But there's if
there's a team that can drag them into the mud
maybe here a little bit.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
Michigan State knows how.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
To do that. They know how to mucket up. It's
a skilled team. Don't get me wrong. This is not
a grinder team. But in terms of somebody that can
slow things down, I feel like Michigan State can do that.
The fact that this game is any slansing, uh, you know,
kind of further emphasizes that point. I think that you're
(08:32):
talking about a number one team in the country, in
the country right now, Michigan plus one hundred.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
That's not an underdog.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Technically, that's a pick them.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
But you're looking at plus.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
Money or even money on the number one team of
the country. You don't see that too often. I guess
I'm supposed to be giving a pick here. All I've
done is make a case for both teams. I say,
Michigan's offense, they will, They'll come alive, six' three win.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Here this is going to be a high SCORING.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
I agree with you on that there are no prop
bets on things like number of penalty. Minutes but if
you had to pick an over under on, THAT i
THINK i would put my number at about fifteen and
hammer the over oh way way higher than. That, Yeah
SO i mean it's going to, be, uh it's probably
going to be one of Those, yeah you're, right. FIFTEEN
(09:20):
i was thinking that's more like fifteen.
Speaker 4 (09:23):
Eight, yeah you're. Right so it's, uh, YEAH i gotta
go a lot. Higher let's go to twenty. Five it's
the over under on that. One that's Why i'm not
making the.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Odds one other thing, here which is kind of, tangential
and this is one that they DON'T i don't think
they have odds on picking positions of. Teams but right
now you've Got michigan number, One wisconsin number, two And
Michigan state number, three and at one point you Had
Penn state in the top. Three earlier in the. Season
(09:52):
we've talked year after year if it was the Big tens.
Year last year could have, been but it. WASN'T a
year before, that it could been and it didn't pan.
Out are they going to get over the hump this
year or are they still going to have somebody from
THE ncc Or Hockey east show up and best them
in The Frozen.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
FOUR i guess that's always the, question right you, know
we keep thinking there was a point That, Michigan i'm,
sorry The Big ten had three of the four teams
in The Frozen. Four they still didn't. Win you, know
there was A frozen four a couple of years ago
where you were pretty sure that you'd at least get
(10:30):
one team into the championship.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
Game both knocked out in the.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
Semifinals it's been a tough sliding for The Big. Ten
but right now when you look at you, know Having,
Michigan michigan's take, Row wisconsin, there Throw Penn state in.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
There we're not even Mentioning.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
Minnesota there's plenty of talent in that conference right.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
NOW i do feel that this should be the year
they get over the. Hump but everything strange happens in
The Frozen.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Four and by the, way we have talked a couple
of times on this podcast ABOUT ncaa championship futures and
will probably do that at least once more as the
season goes, on and you can look at those yourself
at sites Like Draft, kings where they have futures on,
that and that'll tell you what the bookmakers think the
odds are for the national. Champion we've got one more on,
(11:18):
here And, jim this one is a game you're going
to be, covering and it is Unh New hampshire At
maine UNH a plus two Ninety maine and minus three
thirty six and a half over. Under this qualifies as
our pizza money game because it's so, much so wide
(11:39):
in favor Of maine in this.
Speaker 4 (11:41):
One what do you see in this?
Speaker 1 (11:42):
ONE i will first tell The raiders straight, out this
is not a line THAT i can find. AVAILABLE i
made this line up because that's WHERE i think it should.
BE i was just surprised none of The eastern teams
were listed On, DraftKings and looking across other sports betting
PLATFORM i didn't find anything For EASTERN oz this. Week
(12:02):
SO i just wanted to note that if you find,
this you might not get odds similar to, this but
this is WHERE i think they should. Be, listen this
is a main team that's playing really. Well they're almost
unstoppable at. Home playing against a your age team that
they're consistently, INCONSISTENT.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
I guess that's the best way to describe.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Them they can put up some really good efforts and
they're coming off two wins coming into this series this.
Weekend but this is a tough, Mainteain this is a
tough place to, play AND i just don't like the
consistency of you And as thus. Far so IF i
had to pick this, One i'd be Taking. Maine So
i'll eat the pizza this.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
WEEK i. WOULDN'T i wouldn't bet you And ah.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
Here so a question for, You. Jim some early season
bumps in the road For, maine some minor potholes for,
them AND i think they probably already hit their allotment
of home losses At alfon this. Year have They have
they straightened out those early? Issues are they now moving
(13:04):
along a little bit more?
Speaker 3 (13:05):
SMOOTHLY i think offensively they. Are i'm still concerned in.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
That Alvin, boyer the Returning All american, goaltender he has
just been a little bit inconsistent and his Backup russo
Has he's appeared in three.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
Games first.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
Two he had a four to nothing loss down at
quit apiac an eight to five win against bu where
he just ended up giving up a.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
Lot didn't look, bad but he gave up a, lot but.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Then our shoutout Of Boston college a couple of weeks,
ago that one stands.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
Out SO i feel like it's now just a question
who's the?
Speaker 1 (13:41):
Goaltender and talking To Ben barr in advance of this,
series he, SAID i don't know yet On friday.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
Night so this is an interesting.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
SITUATION i think everybody thought That Alvin boyer would be the,
player the guy that could carry the water the entire.
Season he's hit some bumps in the road here. Early
so just keep an eye on the goaltending situation or.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
No SO i don't know that it applies specifically to this,
one BUT i want to wrap us up with a
little bit of a thought about college, hockey betting and
college sports in. General if this were THE, nhl you'd
know everybody's, injury whether.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
It was day to, day all that kind of. Stuff
we don't.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
Know for, example if a goaltender might have some kind
of a niggling injury that might give them a little
trouble getting side to. Side we don't know if somebody's
got a shoulder or a hip bothering. Them we don't
know if somebody missed a couple of days of, practice
unless somebody was snooping in as a reporter and going
to practice every.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
Day how much more difficult is that to figure?
Speaker 2 (14:41):
Out and how much of an edge does it give
you if you get a little inside information if factors.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
In certainly any coach will tell you that injuries are
unavoidable and they're just part of the.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
Game but you don't have that.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Information you're right At it's some schools are really incredible about.
It they'll tell you what the exact injury, is you,
know resort to the upper, body lower. Body some won't
tell you, anything but if you, ask you usually do
get an upper body lower body type of.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
Answer answer for most. Coaches so you're, right it's it's
hard to.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
KNOW i DON'T i don't love putting too much weight
on injuries in college sports. ANYWAYS i just feel like
that's the unpredictability of a. Game but you, know you
you kind of hit, on, like if you have a
goaltender that's nursing and, growing is that something you really
if you, knew you'd absolutely stay away from at least
(15:34):
betting on that, Team maybe just your.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
Aboard a game because of.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
THAT i don't, know but it's a point you bring
up that it's really valid that we we don't have
the same type of injury information in college, hockey and
that's something you have to weigh when you're betting.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
WELL i hope you enjoy this and have some fun with.
