Welcome to us Cho Edge four Friday, November twenty first,
twenty twenty five. This podcast is sponsored by the NCAA
Division one Men's Frozen four April ninth and eleventh in
Las Vegas. Visit NCAA dot com slash m Frozen four
for tickets. I'm at Treshger alongside Jim Connolly and Dan Rubin,
(00:36):
and it's another look at some odds on top games
in college hockey this weekend. Let's start out with a
big matchup in Hockey East, number ten main at number
fifteen Boston College Mean the underdog at plus one twenty
BC favorite at home at minus one fifty four. Over
(00:56):
under on this one is five point five. I'm not
sure where where I stand on Maine right now, Guys, Like.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
So, when I look at this particular matchup, and I
look at where Maine kind of has been over the
course of the last three years or however many years
it's been, You're you're looking at a main team that
has been very good at home and has been getting
progressively better over the years on the road. Right So,
Maine couple of years ago was I think eight and
(01:24):
eight on the road, but had only lost twice at
home last year. They lose four games at home on
the road. I should say they're getting better, but they
have not been a great road team to start this year,
So not making necessarily a full blown pick on this one.
What I'm saying about Maine is that they need to
learn how to win on the road this year, and
going to Boston College makes it a difficult proposition because
(01:49):
BC is starting to pick up some traction, which is
which is very, very dangerous in terms of where Hockey
East stands. BC is no longer the team that from
the beginning of the year that was down, that was
starting to struggle a bit. They're starting to stabilize beyond
its top line, which is even more dangerous when you
look at some of the talent that they have on
(02:09):
that roster. The amount of draft picks starting to gain
some momentum. So the odds in this one are going
to land a little bit more equal than you might
find right now. But I'm not sure, like I said,
if that is a product of whether or not you
want to look at a pick in this one and say,
all right, that means Boston College is undervalued or Maine
(02:31):
is overvalued or is undervalued based on where they are
right now. So there are different factors that go into this.
Mains still a very very good team, but is coming
out into a situation where, from a key standpoint, key
to win, they have to be able to go into
Boston College and beat a team that is starting to
pick up some steam here.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Yeah, I think for Maine, Maine is all about discipline.
If they can stay disciplined, stay out of the penalty box.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
Their penalty kill just hasn't been strong this year.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
So if you're putting a team like Boston College that
has some good weapons, you put James.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
Higgins on the power play, that's a dangerous place.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Dean Laturno, you don't want to be giving him more looks.
That's that's one of the issues I think Maine is
thinking about going into this weekend.
Speaker 4 (03:14):
Can we stay out of the box.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
If this is a game that's called really super tight
and yet eight and seven power plays, I favor BC.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
If this is a game that you maybe see a little.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Bit more let go you end up with two or
three power plays aside, maybe I favor Maine.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
I think Maine has all of the components right.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
They score goals, you know they proved that, but BC,
as you kind of pointed out, Dan, they've been coming
on in the last three games, getting the victories in
scoring goals. You know this the seven they scored against
UMass that was obviously an eye opener, and it was
seven different players. So when you're getting those contributions up
(03:53):
and down the lineup, I think that helps little. When
I make the picks in these these games, these series
where it's two games in the same venue, back to
back nights, I tend to like to go with the
home team first.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
I don't really have a reason here. This is close enough.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
That it becomes almost to pick him, But I'd take
BC here in terms of the over under here right
now at just five point five, no way give me
the over. I guess you could imagine these goaltenders getting
into a duel maybe and getting this is a low
scoring game, but this feels like a game with two
offenses that can score.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
I'd take you over.
Speaker 5 (04:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
And the last point just about that, And this is
something Eric Alanthe and I talked about this week, kind
of just between the two of us from a Hockey
East broadcast standpoint for him is Alvin Boya has been
human this year, like he has.
Speaker 5 (04:47):
Not been otherworldly.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
Part of that is related to the defense in front
of him, like you mentioned, putting everything together with the
discipline aspect, but the numbers the other world league goaltending,
like he came back, he was arguably the best goaltender
in college hockey coming back one of them top, I
would say, argue, no debate in the top three.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
He's been human, and.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
Part of that is because the discipline and the penalty
killed and everything just hasn't been there yet. So like
you said, if they put it together, then that's uh.
Speaker 5 (05:17):
I mean the.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Pieces are there and and I don't know, can we
just get a game like last year when when Ryan
Leonards scored that goal, they you know, we just have
that like that atmosphere that was awesome.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
You know, not only are these Hockey East games and
important there, but these are important for the postseason for
the NCAA picture. These are huge games for both of
these teams.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
Yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
And that's I know that we don't love talking about
the NPI and the tournament this early, but these games
will matter.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
These are especially for me and coming down on.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
The road, Dan pointed out that road road has gotten
a lot better under Ben bar This was a bad
road team prior to Ben bar As they're a lot
better on the road. But if they could pick up one,
if they could pick up two road wins at Boston
College this weekend, wow, that goes a long way in
their NPI.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Well, it's not often that we've gotten to feature an
ECAC hockey matchup, but we've got a pretty good one
coming up at line of rink at Cornell. Union College
is off to a tourd start. Their ranked number twenty
this week, Cornell number nineteen, so close in the poll
for the voters. Union is a road underdog. They are
(06:36):
plus one point eighty. Cornell is minus two thirty eight.
The over under on this one in Ithaca is five
point five.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
I know we don't like talking about the NPI, which
is exactly why I'm going to talk about it. Union
is thirty four in the NPI right now, and the
reason for that is because it's straight. The schedule is
sixty third out of sixty three teams.
Speaker 5 (06:59):
It is the worst.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Strength of schedule right now in the country, which is
why when you look at the odds and you look
at it, where the algorithm is going to spill back.
Union is despite having a very good record, despite being
starting to pick up some national traction. After I went
on that rant last year, last week about or whenever
it was that they teams like Union don't get enough
(07:23):
respect because they don't carry the name power.
Speaker 5 (07:26):
Guess what they.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
I'm about to I'm about to say that Union doesn't
deserve the same amount of respect because of its schedule
and because it hasn't really played anybody. So looking at
Cornell a bit in this one, I really think that
this These are.
Speaker 5 (07:41):
Odds on Cornell that are going to be.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Probably could be could be longer, right minus two thirty eight,
Probably could be longer. They have a lot more of
the traction, and I don't know, I just don't like
Union in this one. I think it's a great opportunity,
specifically for Union. I think this is a big win
if Union can win it.
Speaker 5 (08:00):
But I don't know.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Union schedule and resume right now just is not lining
up where I think it would warrant taking them. Maybe
this would be a good pizza money bet if the
odds were a little bit longer.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
Yeah, it's not that often that we're really on two
different pages, Dan, but we're in two different pages here.
I don't care where Union's strength of schedule has been.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
Their scoring goals.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
They're popping pucks in the net, but you know, at
a pretty torard pace, and they just they just played
two Hockey East teams last week and swept them and
did so decisively in UMass Low and un Ah.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
So I don't mind Union right now. Actually, I like
a lot about this team.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
I've been kind of high on them since since they've
been out of the gate Bass. So you know, in
Cornell's the team to me that they need to start
proving themselves. They're getting some good results, but they need
to put back to back results together.
Speaker 4 (08:56):
For me, So I think here just the value Union here.
Speaker 5 (09:01):
I do think.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
I do think, just to throw out there, one other
point on this, and kind of my last ward on it,
is that I thought last week, would you mask for
a team like Boston College was a good opportunistic game
where you've picked up some wins and now you need
to go and kind of bang an opponent right now.
I think this is the same specifically for Union, which
is you pick up the win against Cornell.
Speaker 5 (09:23):
This is a show me win. As I like to say,
like show me game.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
If Union goes out and beats Cornell and beats them decisively,
then Union deserves a lot more than obviously what I've
given them to this point.
Speaker 4 (09:34):
In that five and a half over under.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
By the way, this game kind of screams one of
those low scoring ECAC Cornell type of games two one
three one three two. So if you're going to touch
this one, I go under. You know, I think that
Cameron Corpy of the goaltender, he's a transfer from Michigan.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
For Union.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
If he can be the difference maker in this game,
I really like hearing you.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
I've got two quick points before we go to break
one NPI. Until they start deducting wins against teams that
hurt your NPI, it's really not going to be meaningful.
So we still got another month till that starts to
happen for some teams.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
So that's the other.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
But I've got a question, and Dan, I know you've
been pretty close to ECAC. Do we know enough yet
about what the personality, what the style of Cornell under
Casey Jones is going to be after all those years
under Mike Schaeffer.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
I'll say yes, because I don't think Cornell is going
to change much. I think last year was a lot
of the fingerprints that were that were the transition of
kind of blending them. And honestly, I think if you
look back at the Clarkson teams, I don't think there
was a lot of differential when you're looking at teams
that could score, play good defense, rely on good goaltending
(10:55):
system type defense. So I don't think there's going to
be a whole lot of difference.
Speaker 5 (11:00):
I think the personnel is going to dictate it.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
Last year under in Mike Schaffer's last year, Casey Jones
was kind of the was co head coaching, and I
guess you would say and when you look at the
way that they were playing, they were not similar to
where the numbers are right now, but that's because they
were dealing with injuries. It was kind of a weird year.
Ian Shane took a step back from where his numbers were.
(11:23):
Alexis Cornoyers playing essentially at a rate that's that's where
Ian Shane from a couple of years ago. So I
don't think there's gonna be a whole lot of change changeover.
If there is, we're not going to see it for
a few years, and it's probably gonna be dictated by
a heck of a lot more than just who the
coach was.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
Well, we've got a couple of Big ten games coming up.
When we returned this podcast as sponsored by the NCAA
Men's Division one Frozen four, April ninth and eleventh in

Attendance is encouraged. Passion is mandatory.
Speaker 6 (12:11):

Speaker 2 (12:16):
How many teams are in the Men's Frozen four?
Speaker 4 (12:19):
Please leave me.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
We continue now with usccho Edge going to the Big Ten.
Wisconsin ranked number seven this week against number one Michigan State.
Wisconsin comes into East Lansing at plus two ten and Michigan.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
State is minus two eighty. Michigan State.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
We know about Wisconsin making a big comeback after a
rare down year for my casetings last year.
Speaker 5 (12:51):
Over under on this one is five and a half.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
By the way, Oh, anytime my castings is involved, I
think you pound me under. I think I'll just start
there and just say that if this one gets to
it'll be a blessed miracle. No, I say that after
they after they cleared five easily, and I think their
last like five games.
Speaker 5 (13:11):
No, Look, I like Wisconsin.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
I don't think you're gonna get odds this good on
Wisconsin the rest of the year if they continue on
the path that they're on. Plus two ten is just
screaming for value on Wisconsin. Michigan State is the unanimous
number one in the country. They're they're the best team
right now in college hockey. They're the best team playing.
They've slaughtered teams, they've played great. But you're not getting
(13:36):
value on them at minus two eighty. You're getting value
on Wisconsin at plus two ten. So I like Wisconsin
a lot for a betting purpose. And if you like
Michigan State, this is where maybe I think I would
pair them with somebody else, or pair them with a
Cornell if.
Speaker 5 (13:52):
You so choose. But look, I like Wisconsin to win this.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
I like Wisconsin to I think we're looking at new
number one after Michigan State place Wisconsin. So that's your
that's my that's my soapbox bolt statement of the week
before we get into a pizza bet. So you know
I'll ride, I'll ride the Badger's here.
Speaker 4 (14:11):
Yeah, I'm with you there. You know, I look at
two ten.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
I think Wisconsin's like a serious numbers versus resume versus
resume play here. They've They've played a really tough schedule.
They've put up good numbers in a lot of goals.
I mean, the scoring is what's there for them. And
I know they don't allow much. Uh, they a lot
of more than maybe the Minnesota State team that my
Casings coach would have allowed. But I still think when
(14:37):
you're looking at the total here of five point five,
this is with two offenses that can get up and
down the sheet, that can score goals. This is either
your taking the over or you don't touch it.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
And under here is not even in.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
My vocabulary, But I do like, I really do like
Wisconsin here with the value.
Speaker 4 (14:57):
You know, I think one of the.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
Tougher things here is Benning against the number one team
of the country that hasn't lost since opening night. I
think that is one of the more difficult bets to me,
So I might actually pass on this one.
Speaker 4 (15:11):
Truly. If I bet it, i'd bet Wisconsin. If I
do anything here, I'd rarely be hammering the over.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Can I make one quick just observation about these teams
is that is how deep each of them really go.
You're not getting goal scoring from just one guy or
one major player. You're getting numbers of guys that are
scoring three, four or five goals already this year. And
same for Wisconsin. They've got what five guys with five
(15:38):
goals already? So this is going to be awesome, Like,
this is just gonna be a fun weekend of hockey.
I think it's gonna be an electric atmosphere. I think
that Wisconsin is going to play well on the road.
My case thing's going to have them ready, and somebody
that you don't know off either team is probably going
to be the hero at some point.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
Yeah, just pick it on that quick, Jim before we
go to our pizza money bet. Isn't the depth in
college hockey this year something that makes things a little
bit more unpredictable?
Speaker 4 (16:08):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (16:09):
And you know, I know we talked about it on
our Monday and our Wednesday podcast at times about just
scoring being up. I haven't done a snapshot to see
if it actually is operative so how much.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
But it does feel, yeah, you have a lot more
offensive talent.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
I think in college hockey even you know, good blue
liners that can move the.
Speaker 4 (16:31):
Puck, you know, goaltending.
Speaker 1 (16:33):
Yes, we got some good influx of goaltending talent in
the CHL settlement, But when you really look at it,
I think the real talent came from the scoring. So
I do feel like, yes, we've seen a lot more
goal scoring, and you have deeper teams that are you know,
really have a lot of offensive talent. Every team feels
(16:54):
like they have six forwards at least a minimum of
six forwards that any night can go out to score.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
Well, let's take a look at our pizza money bet,
and it's weird to have these two teams in it,
but it's because of the numbers, the odds. The money line.
Ohio State is at number two. Michigan over under on
this one is six and a half, so they're looking
for some goals. Ohio State is plus two twenty and
(17:21):
Michigan at YOST is minus two ninety eight.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
It's a real shame this game isn't next week obvious
that the football football game between these two teams that
would have been that would have been a whole heck
of a lot of fun, wouldn't it. I suppose this
is the proper way to kick off the hate week
between Ohio State and the team up north that they're
going to start xing out the ms in Columbus already.
Speaker 5 (17:46):
Look, I want Ohio State done this one. And I'm
not just saying.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
That because I love pizza or hate pizza if I
lose the money on it, But I just Ohio State
just beat wiscone in Ohio States hung with Penn State.
I think that Ohio State is getting dinged a bit
for the loss in the algorithm, for the loss of
Sacred Heart in overtime, and splitting with teams along the way.
(18:14):
The irony is that they've played better as of late
on Fridays with the win overpet with at least last
week when they beat Wisconsin. Before that they lost to
Penn State, and they've lost a lot of Friday games,
So they're getting a little bit better on Friday.
Speaker 5 (18:29):
But how do you bet.
Speaker 3 (18:31):
It's a rivalry game, Like there's probably gonna be a
massive penalty minutes. At some point, there's probably gonna be
some angry pushing and shoving. I'm sure the Michigan fans
are just going to say thank you to Ohio State
for coming into ann Arvor for the weekend. And they're
not gonna yell anything at them that's gonna be impolite
or nasty or denigrade everything about the players and the
(18:55):
other team's bench in locker room.
Speaker 5 (18:57):
But if they do, if they so choose to do.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
That, then then I'm going to lean on Ohio State
and double up my pizza this week.
Speaker 4 (19:06):
You know, the irony is here.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
I think I've eaten pizza twice this week. I think
I'm going to get another one tonight, you know?
Speaker 5 (19:15):
Or why not?
Speaker 4 (19:16):
I mean, I don't. I don't like this bet.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
Why am I betting against a Michigan team that scores
at will at home? I just if you're going to
take Ohio State, you're betting on a goals ending. Christopher
Everly at times has been fantastic.
Speaker 4 (19:34):
He's got a.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
A save percentage, you know, north of nine twenty. He's
got a goals against average just over two. But this
is Michigan we're talking about here. This team gets up
and down the ice. They've been scoring goals. You know,
I just think it's interesting that we get a pizza
money bet in the Big Ten. We don't see them
very often because these teams are usually pretty closely matched.
(19:59):
And you still have two teams that are really closely
matched here. But I think you really Michigan is priced
correctly here at home. I'm not touching this one. I'm
going to eat my pizza again this week.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
I am looking forward to sending you just a link
to the McCoy's hang on Sloopy on Friday when if
Ohio State has a lead in the third period, I
am going to send you that.
Speaker 5 (20:24):
I am going to probably play it.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
I don't know if there's a way to play it
remotely on your phone, but I'm going to try to
figure out a way to do that so that I
could take Ohio State again. I'm going I'm not even
going to refer to Michigan by name. It's the team
up north. They're taking them this weekend.
Speaker 4 (20:39):
Well, you know about that rivalry.
Speaker 2 (20:41):
I've got a friend who's a Michigan alum, and he
not only hates Ohio State, he despises that the state
of Ohio actually exists, so that's what that rivalry is like.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
But with that, we're going to wrap right up.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
Yeah, you know that's about right. Yeah. In other words
of the way Bostonians treat everybody.
Speaker 2 (21:03):
Yeah, and everybody just kind of despises them.
Speaker 5 (21:06):
Boston exists, so at.
Speaker 4 (21:08):
Least where I live anyway, we're gonna rap up there.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
