Usccho dot com.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Welcome to usccho Edge for Friday the thirteenth, December thirteenth,
twenty twenty four. M Edtrevsker with Jim Mcconnolly and Dan Rubin.
Just five games on the docket for the bookmakers this
weekend for this Friday today, but we'll also take a
preview of the bean Pot as our pizza money bet
(00:34):
later on. But we're going to start out with a
big ten where there are three games to look at,
all of them pretty good. The one with the biggest favorite, though,
is this one. Wisconsin is at Michigan over under his
six and a half. Wisconsin's a plus one ninety, Michigan
a minus two point fifty.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Pretty interesting line considering that Wisconsin's playing probably their best
hockey of the year, in Michigan is struggling to score goals.
All of that said, I wouldn't touch the over under
with a ten foot poll at six and a half
because Michigan is capable of bursting out. They have not
been playing well for two weekends offensively, but you never
(01:15):
know when they're going to just put up a ten spotlight.
They did three weeks ago, so I wouldn't touch you
over under I think that the odds on Michigan aren't good.
If you have any inclination to go Wisconsin, go with
with Wisconsin. But this isn't this isn't really a value
game for me. Wisconsin being on the road. That's a
(01:37):
tough sell to me as well.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
I might have said Wisconsin because I felt like Wisconsin
was going to be a team that was highly regarded
at some point. I know that last week it happened,
So I don't know if Wisconsin can do it another
weekend in a row. After they beat Michigan State last
week on Friday with that four nothing win, it would
(02:00):
not surprise me for Wisconsin to go out and beat
Michigan and be able to make that a good bet.
That said, I can't pinpoint which game it's going to
be because I know the Note Dame game they lost
on Friday one on Saturday, took Minnesota to overtime on Saturday,
so it's it doesn't really line up for me to
(02:21):
want to bet this one in general. But if you're inclined,
like you said, to place a bet in general as
a I said no, repeating myself on that term. That's
the that's my overararching I just want to bet the games.
Take Wisconsin. I don't see any value whatsoever on Michigan,
and I wouldn't touch the over under. I think this
could stay under because the line is too big.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
It's to the half.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
It's really hard to get to that if these teams
are if it's playing the Wisconsin defensive style, case in
point last week four, nothing win but getting But I
wouldn't confidently take the under with the over at six
and a half because of Michigan.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
This is when I got to weigh in on because
I've got a gut on this one.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
I think that's a term, right man.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
I like Wisconsin and like the under, and I don't
know why exactly. I think it's because Wisconsin only gave
up three goals last weekend and one of them was
in overtime. Michigan couldn't score goals the weekend before. Wisconsin
seems to have found what was missing. It seems like
(03:24):
a nice value there. I like Wisconsin in the under
in this one, and I'm not putting any of my
own money on it, but something about it just feels
right there.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
Yeah, there's nothing. If you're going to go with Wisconsin,
also go with the under, because I don't think that
they are going to win a six ' five game,
or even a five four, four to three for that matter.
I think they're going to win the game two, not
think three. Now think three to two somewhere in that rage.
If you think Michigan can win, they need can separate
in the overin to play. Yeah, my thought exactly.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
But I will say this, ed making a selection on
this might actually go beyond pizza bet. If you're in,
if you don't mind dropping your pizza money, there's gonna
be like the ed Bet.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
This isn't ed Bett of the week. This is ed
Bet of the first half.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
So that's not that's not a lock, that's just the
ed Bet got of the week is a got.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Of the first half. There it is.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yeah, we have to do that once or more in
the second half of the season. The next game we
have here is Notre Dame at Ohio State over under
on this one is five and a half. Notre Dame
a slight underdog there plus one fourteen. Ohio State at
home is minus one forty five.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Yeah. I actually Notre Dame here. They proved when they
went over to Belfast a few weeks ago that they
were playing better hockey, some of the better hockey they've
played this year. And right now Ohio State is you know,
they're coming off the weekend against Penn State, but they
got and swept by Princeton, they got swept by Michigan State,
(04:58):
a couple of wins against Lynn and Wood in there.
I'm not going to put a lot of value in that.
I feel like we've said it. I think Ada on
our Weekend review podcast that we might have started to
see this team level off, find their low water mark,
if you will, because they were hard to start the year,
(05:19):
and then I think once they got out some of
their bigger tests in there, they haven't done that well.
Can they do it against Notre Dame. Possibly the fact
that they're at home probably helps a lot. But I
think if I'm going with anybody here, I like the
way Notre Dame's playing.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
I agree when I go back over Ohio State's season
in the jump up and talent and the jump up
in competition, I think is the biggest part of what
I don't like about Ohio State right now. The beginning
of the season, playing Aic at home, Wisconsin on the road,
Wisconsin was not playing well Bowling Green on the road,
(05:57):
Lake Superior at home. By the time they hit the
Michigan State series, the jump up went so drastic that
I think Ohio State leveled off and hit the wall
pretty quick. One thing that I think is the equalizer
is that this is in Ohio and they have not
lost yet Ohio State at home. Now, I know that
(06:20):
enters into a jink's territory when you're looking at Notre
Dame and Notre Dame.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
I think is playing better. But I.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Don't love Ohio State as a bet where Ohio State
is a favored money line and you'd have to over
bet one hundred dollars to try and make a hundred
you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
Like, it's not a doubled up bet, It's just it's
not there for me. I would also have to mention
the over here because I look at Notre Dame's recent results.
They have not played a game under five and a
half goals in more than a month. I would say
that the over bet here, if you're going to go,
I've the over under. I like the overside.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Oh, We've got one more in the Big ten, and
that is Michigan State at Minnesota. Former number one in
current number one over under a six Michigan State a
slight underdog at plus one twenty four in Minnesota a
minus one sixty at Mariucci.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
This is probably the best game we have on the
slate big odds on Minnesota when you look at that
minus one sixty against a team that was the number one.
Is this week's number one against last week's number one.
Really absolute heavyweight battle here. This should be a great series.
I think that right now. I like the way that
(07:41):
the golfers are playing. Obviously, shutting out Michigan twice last
weekend was huge. I think that there's also some bounce
back to Michigan State. They lose last Friday, they only
get two out of three points on Saturday because it
went to overtime and they needed to come back from
a two to nothing depicit. I think they should be
a little fired up going into this one. So my
(08:03):
advice don't touch it. This isn't one that I really liked,
but if I had to go, the price is not
that bad on Minnesota that I wouldn't take them. I'm
going the other way on this.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
I don't love Minnesota at minus one sixty because I
think Michigan State is going to play better.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
I don't think Minnesota is capable of a stinker.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
I don't think we're going to look at this game
and smack the over on over under of six and
it's going to be a six nothing bush because Michigan
State smacked Minnesota right in the mouth and the Gophers
got crushed, specifically at home. I do think that Michigan
State will play better. Every team goes through peaks and
(08:46):
valleys during a year, and I think that is the
last week was the valley where they had to come
back and they didn't and they.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Lost out on the number one ranking.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
So I think a hungry Michigan State team makes it
a little bit tougher to look at Minnesota, who has
played exceptionally well and wonder if Minnesota just needs to
find a couple of extra I just think Minnesota is
going to take a loss before the Christmas break, and
I've been saying that for a couple of weeks and
they're down to the last two games, so been lined
(09:19):
with that. In lining that, I think Minnesota is very
good will as well as ver as the favorite. I
don't think they're going to win the weekend and I
don't think they're going to lose the last game before break,
so by default, putting all that together, I think Michigan
State at plus one twenty four is is a good
call on Friday. Plus Minnesota at minus one sixty do
(09:42):
how does that just seems like it should have been close.
It'll minus one ten or minus one twenty five to
make me want to touch Minnesota this week.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
This just makes me think about how good the Big
Ten is this year. Penn State played last night a
four to one win in Washington Army, but the other
six teams having matchups, and right now with Wisconsin turning
things around, there really isn't a bad team in this league.
Even Penn State is dangerous and they're lingering lower in
(10:12):
the standings. This is really a league where if you're
going to bet on the game, you've got to remember
anybody can win these and can win in surprising ways.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
There's no doubt about that. This is the best we've
seen the Big Ten in its existence, and that includes
the year that a couple of years ago where they
blew out everybody in the first round of the NCAA tournament,
did not win a national championship, but they blew everybody
out in the first round. I think that this current
iteration of the Big Ten is a deeper league. You
(10:45):
had some really good top of the league teams a
couple of years ago, but you also had some not
that great bottom of the league team. So now having
you know, I think some top to bottom parody. And
as you mentioned Penn's, they're the worst team, and they're
not bad. I wouldn't want to have to play them
in a non conference game. They're a team that, you know,
(11:07):
despite the fact that they don't have a great record
right now, could go out and beat anybody on any night.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Do you remember the war was it the World Cup
of Hockey when the team North America that had those
the young kids, the under twenty three team or whatever
it was with the American and Canadian skaters, and how
that team was just as good, if not better than,
at times the Big Club.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
I feel that way about the Big Ten. I feel
the Big Ten as all.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Of these guys that are just loaded and primed to
burst out, and if you were to take a Big
Ten All star team right now, they'd be able to
get I'd probably put the plus one twenty five against
the Blackhawks let's be honest right now, but I would
probably take them and put I would put the talent
that is in the Big ten right now against anybody
(11:57):
anywhere on any ice, just because the talent is so
young and so good at a young age.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Sounds like that Big Ten All Star team would be
the US national development team from two years ago.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
We're going to take a break and we'll come back
and look at the NCCHC and also an early look
at the bean pot.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
Yes, they have odds up on the winner of that.
When usccho edge.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
Continues, we're back with usccho edge. Saint Cloud State is
at North Dakota. Saint Cloud has been off to a
good start. The over under on this is five and
a half North Dakota, not so much, plus one twenty
for Saint Cloud State, minus one fifty four for North Dakota.
(12:46):
And I see not so much for North Dakota. But
it's only because there are such high expectations for the
Fighting Hawks.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
Yeah, I don't like this line. I would if I
was betting this, I'd be hammering. Saint Cloud does not
playing their best hockey. Saint Cloud They's maybe not been
pulling out sweeps. But they've been splitting all of their series.
North Dakota really did not play well last week against Miami,
and they got the sweep five four four two, but
(13:15):
they had to come from three goals down. I believe
in that five to four game, or a couple of
goals down at least. It's just they're just I just
don't like the way that they're playing right now. They
need to prove more to me. If I would ever
take them with a line like this that's pretty wild
minus one fifty four. I know that they're at home
and that's a big home I's advantage, but there's no
(13:37):
reason that Saint Cloud should be that big of an
underdog in this game. Pretty sure.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
I just destroyed North Dakota onto Tuesday and TMQ about
your last week or this week specifically about the way
the pairwise shakes out now.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
I felt that North Dakota was not that good compared
to the.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
Teams that were situated around them, and that you could
take a team with ten wins and I know they've dropped,
like Clarkson, line them up against North Dakota, and I
felt you have to put teams there around you in
the head to head comparisons.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
And all that stuff, and YadA YadA. I said that
North Dakota wasn't as good as everyone wanted to make
them out.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
Today, so and it aligned with that the fact their
whole favorite. I have no idea why, God if I Betton,
this just seems like the easiest bet of the week,
which is probably why North Dakota is gonna win. That's
like one of those do the odds makers know something
we don't but the AI level. But the way this
(14:34):
all gets shaken down, there is no way I could
look at this and take North Dakota as a whole
favorite over over Saint.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Cloud, even if they're playing at the terrific Ralph Engelstead
Arena in front of arguably the best fans in college hockey.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
No, and I don't think that Saint Cloud is going
to be particularly intimidated by that. I think there's a
group of teams and I genuinely mean this that aren't
intimidated by stepping into those environments, and Sant Cloud's being
one of them. They're used to it and because they
have to do it on an annual basis, And I
feel that way about teams out here in the East
coming out to Connie Forum and playing before seventy eight
(15:15):
hundred at Boston College. And I actually had this conversation
about attendance in general, just about just about how fans
have come back in Hockey East. And I feel that
way because I feel that the advantage the Ralph gives
you is an advantage to a team like Damiji, is
(15:36):
an advantage against a team like Augustana. And I'm just
throwing teams that don't have the same type of larger
hole mice advantage when they have to go to the Ralph,
or even I'd even throw in there that it probably
gives you an advantage.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
Against no one in your league. I don't think it's
that big of a deal in your league. Everybody's used
to it.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Yeah, And I was just trying to get in good
with the North to fans, honest. Yeah, you guys, I'm
gonna get a inviting all kinds of X chatter from them.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
Oh yeah, and I'm looking forward to having a flavoring pile.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
Of dog what on my front sets my front lawn
before this, Well, this podcast is over.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Okay, just don't step on it. Denver and Colorado College,
it's the gold pan. They've got the throwback uniforms home
and home series this weekend. A huge rivalry and points
on the line for the NCCHC over under in this
game is six. Denver is minus one eighty eight. Colorado
(16:39):
College the home underdog at plus one forty five.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
This is a series that Denver has dominated in recent years,
but this is a different Colorado College team. I think
we're seeing they should be hungry coming off a sweep
at the hands of Providence last week. They better be hungry,
and now they're going home to play there rival. I
think as the whole underdog. If I had to bet this,
(17:04):
I'd probably go ho CEC. I don't think I touched
Denver here, and I'm not. Since Denver lost their number
one ranking, they look they feel like they've lost a
little bit of their swagger too, so I'm concerned about that.
Is this the weekend to get it back? Probably, if
they're going to get it back really quickly here, this
would be the weekend because it is your rival. But
(17:26):
I don't know. I just like Colorado College a home underdog.
I like that me too.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
I love home underdogs in general, specifically in rivalry matchups.
I really like home underdogs I don't specifically like hole
underdogs because I don't think you've play well at Colorado College.
And part of that is the altitude. Even going from
Denver to CC, it adds an extra I think fifteen
(17:54):
hundred feet because CC is even further up than Denver,
and so I think and ironically, if you go from
CC to air Force, I think it's another two thousand
feet going from Colorado College up into the mountains to
the academy. So I think that is a decided home
ice advantage. And there is in I know, I just
(18:15):
got done saying that you're used to it, and there's
no way to get used to playing in that extra
thousand feet, that altitude, that's pretty thin. So I think
that if this game stays close to the end, then
it is absolutely going.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
To be Colorado College.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
And I think that based on everything that we've seen
about Denver the last couple of weeks, like you said,
they just seem to have lost that thing that made
Denver incredibly.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
Dangerous at the beginning of the year. And since they.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
Don't have that's part of why I like Colorado College
to keep it close and then.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
Win it at the end. I don't buy this extra
fifteen hundred feet is being that bad. I really they
don't know. If there's any team out there in the
nation that is not air Force that can handle the altitude,
it's Denver. There's only two teams that really play in
that type of altitude. If this is Minnesota heading into
(19:09):
Colorado College, yeah, definitely sixty five hundred feet. That's a
little harder to play at than it is in the
Twin Cities. But I don't think fifteen hundred feet changes
a lot for Denver. I will say Colorado College is
six and one at home.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
So that's part of why I was drawing off of it,
which is that it's Fortress Robson a bit.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
That's where I've been drawing off of that.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
So I still like the everything about playing that one
at home. I also like that it's a Friday home
game at CC. I don't like going back to Denver
on Saturday. I like Denver to win it on Saturday,
but I like the Friday that the Friday game is
home for CC.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Two things nobody wants to get swept in this weekend.
CC comes back home after dropping two and Providence. Secondly,
I've visited Ed Robson Arena twice. I did not see
a game at the time. It was on a trip
out there and there was youth hockey playing. It's a
beautiful building. I would love to watch a game there.
(20:11):
That's on my a list of top venues to go
see a game. Nothing to do with betting there. I
just wanted to throw in that personal note. Now, the
bean Pot, Yeah, it's not till February, right, February, first
two Mondays, first two Mondays, February. They already have odds
you can bet on who the winner is, which means
(20:32):
is that's also a bet on them winning the semi
final round. And here are the odds right now, the
odds on favorite, the huge favorite right now compared to
the other numbers is Boston College at minus one twenty five.
BU is plus one ninety, Northeastern is plus seven point fifty,
(20:53):
and Harvard is plus eighteen hundred. And maybe let me
ask you this question, is you delve into it. Isn't
this a reflection of BC really the only team performing
up to what is expected of them so far this season?
Speaker 1 (21:09):
Yes, said, I think these odds are useless. The bean Pot.
Everybody knows or anybody that knows the bean Pot knows
throw all records, throw out and everything. How dominant was
Boston College last year and they didn't get out of
the first round and Northeastern ends up winning the bean Pot.
The number of times we have seen a team come
(21:32):
in absolutely on fire, red hot and then knock it
out of that first round. It happens all the time.
So I get these odds. I understand it's been a
while since Harvard's won this tournament. Is that unbelievable value
for to think that Harvard go and win two games
if they get up for it. Yeah, eighteen hundred for
(21:54):
one hundred dollars bet even the Northeastern odds. Don't forget
I think Northeastern is one. It's four or five of
six bean Pots, with Boston University winning the one in between.
Come on, like, these odds are they just feel crazy.
I get it that Boston College should be a heavy
(22:15):
favorite in anything they do right now, but I think
that these odds don't take into a account the fact
that they are always upsets in this tournament.
Speaker 3 (22:26):
Boston College, I think, is just close to locking into
a number one seed in the national.
Speaker 1 (22:31):
Tournament as any team I've seen right now.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
Just based off the teams that they've played, and you're right,
it doesn't mean anything. I remember back in twenty seventeen
or twenty sixteen looking at the bean Pot and being like,
this thing is getting overrated, Like the teams in this
are not the best teams in the East. There are
so many better teams that were in Hockey East at
(22:54):
the time.
Speaker 1 (22:54):
I think it was right around the time the Ole won.
Speaker 3 (22:56):
One Hockey East and UMass was on the rise, so
I remember looking at it. There was a Merrimack year
that Merrimack was really good and went to the Garden,
but I think they lost to BC or PU that year.
It was ten odd years ago, but I look at
the foot I don't remember when it was. I know
it was more than it was more than a decade ago,
(23:16):
but I note that three.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Years four, No, it was the year that it was
a Hockey East final.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
It was like it might have been twenty twelve, because
I think BC won it and then went on to
win the national title that year. But I remember looking
at the other teams in the bean Pot and saying,
this tournament just isn't what people want it to be.
Speaker 1 (23:39):
It is.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
It absolutely is the last couple of years of post
COVID have proven that it as good as Boston College has.
They actually haven't played for a championship since twenty nineteen,
so take that into account. How good the twenty nineteen
twenty twenty BC team was Loston double overtime to bu
at the bean Pot in twenty twenty before COVID shut
down life.
Speaker 1 (24:01):
Last year's team lost to BEU.
Speaker 3 (24:04):
In the first round of the bean Pot, and I
think that was right about the time that they were
both number one and number two in the country. Harvard
lead for a bean Pot championship in twenty twenty three
and lost in a shootout, which the bean Pot should
never go to a shootout.
Speaker 1 (24:19):
But that's another story for another day. This is not
a tournament where this stuff matters.
Speaker 3 (24:25):
And there's a reason why eighteen thousand people will show
up and watch these teams play.
Speaker 1 (24:30):
It's because records don't matter.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
I'll tell you what. We're talking pizza money here. I
like twenty dollars of pizza money on Northeastern to win
one hundred and fifty bucks. That seems like as likely
as any other scenario.
Speaker 1 (24:47):
It's it's a stretch about Harvard. I get it. But
as Dan said, they've been there recently. They've been in
the final and nearly won it a couple of years ago,
so yeah, they can get Listen, honestly, I would take twin.
I would take s sixty dollars and put them on BU, Northeastern,
and Harvard in Nachuck Boston College. You don't touch a favorite,
(25:09):
and you have a seventy five percent chance and Nate.
If Northeastern pulls off the upset of night one right away,
you're in such great shape because you've knocked out the favorite.
You never know in this tournament. I love all teams
not named Boston College. Not because I don't think that
BC can win. They can win this thing. They've got
(25:30):
plenty of talent. They're the most talented of these four teams.
But I think that it goes back to the it's
such a fluky tournament. Too many weird things happen. I
don't like. I never looking at favorites in a tournament
like this.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
In way more fluky as of recent than it ever was.
So don't forget seventy one seventy two bean pots. I
think for some of them are BU or BC winning it.
That is not the case in the last ten years.
That is the key, is that the bean pot when
you go into it and you're trying to bet it,
(26:06):
everybody tends to look at the bean pot and says,
be you, it's the Terrier Invitational.
Speaker 1 (26:11):
They've won thirty bean pots.
Speaker 3 (26:13):
BC best team in the country Northeastern who's won a
lot lately, Jimmy, would you say it was five of.
Speaker 1 (26:19):
The last six or five or five or six?
Speaker 3 (26:21):
I'm not sure, including the year that it was canceled
because there was no bean pot twenty one.
Speaker 1 (26:27):
And Harvard still has more bean pots than Northeastern. I
think yes they do.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
They had a lot of the early bean pop and
that is the like we said, has played for a
bean poch championship in the last two years, so within
the last two years. So this'd be fun to bet
if you're betting, just because you throw money down and
go crazy with it. And I'm sure there's someone in
your family that's probably betting someone else and just gives
you something to yell at them about, even more so
