Hosts Jim Connelly (@jimmyconnelly), Derek Schooley (@derekschooley), and Ed Trefzger (@EdTrefzger) review games of the weekend and news of the past week.

Dartmouth continued its perfect start, moving to 8–0–0 with wins over Vermont and Merrimack. With Brown, Yale, Army, and New Hampshire ahead, a 12–0–0 pre-break record is suddenly realistic.
It was a light week nationally, but several top teams impressed:
  • No. 1 Michigan swept Harvard (5–1, 4–3 OT) despite a Crimson rally.
  • No. 3 Michigan State took two from Colgate
  • Sweeps also for North Dakota, Quinnipiac, and Minnesota State.
In holiday tournaments, Miami claimed the Friendship Four in Belfast, beating RIT and then-No. 20 Union for the title. Alaska won the Adirondack Winter Invitational, shutting out St. Lawrence and edging Clarkson. At MSG, BU beat Cornell 2–1 in Red Hot Hockey on a third-period goal from Cole Eiserman.

Welcome to us CHO Weekend review from Monday, December first,
twenty twenty five. I'm at Trevsker alongside Jim Connolly and
Derek Scooley. This podcast is sponsored by the NCAA Men's

(00:37):
four and get your tickets now. Well, guys, a light weekend,
but some interesting stuff. Nonetheless, Well Darmith is the team
for us to be talking about. They're at eight O now,
even though they got a little bit of a late
start as an IVY over the weekend, beat Vermont seven
to two and Merrimack and a Squeaker one nothing. Hayden
Stavrof has seven goals and eleven points in those eight games,

(01:00):
leading the team in scoring and a tandem and goal
Ron Clark and Emit Crotel have split time evenly down
the middle. Clark nine twenty one save percentage, one point
five win goals against and get this Protel nine to
seventy save percentage and a point seventy five goals against.
They have brown Yale Army in New Hampshire coming up

(01:22):
longtime rivalry with UNH and that's coming before semester break.
Is it crazy to even consider this team twelve and
zero going into the break. I'm sure somebody's looking for
an upset there, and Army knows about upsets.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
This is this is a team that we've been talking
about for a couple of weeks now, week after week
after week. And from what I was told that it's
a it's an older veteran team, and it's a different
team than what we've been talking about here so far.
No CHL players, built from the bchl Ushl Nahl model.

(01:59):
It's built to kind of the old school type of model,
no use sports, not a lot of transfers, just kind
of a team that read Cashman's put together, grown together,
and still kind of in that old school college hockey model.
And they're they're grown together and played together. Now yeah,

(02:21):
are they for real? I still don't know. And I
think as we move on through the week, we're going
to talk by and Sell and you're going to be
interested to see my answer on it. But right now,
they're hot, they're undefeated, and it's December, so you've got
to be talking about them, but we've talked an awful
lot about them. Strength to schedule, to me is still
a question mark.

Speaker 4 (02:42):
I guess that is the one place where you kind
of look and say, okay, they have the sixty first
out of sixty three teams in terms of strength to schedule.
It hasn't been a strong start a strong schedule out
of the game. But you can only win the games
that are in front of you. Right now, Dartmouth's winning games.
They're winning different types of games. I look at that
Merrimac game, a one nothing tight game right after they

(03:03):
played Vermont and what was a wide open game.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
But I, you know, watch.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
That Vermont game on TV and I'm really impressed that
Dartmouth's defense doesn't allow much, so it's it's hard to
get the opportunities. And then their goaltending, as you mentioned ed,
it's just been Stella crow to right now.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
Just three goals against in four games.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
That's that's a outstanding number and the same percentage of
nine to seventy to go with it. I think this
is a complete team. We're going to see a lot
between now and break. I look at that U n
H game on the road, it's a rival that one
is the one I kind of have circled as that
could be the road bump. But as you said, Armies,
you know, knocked off some teams already, they're coming up

(03:44):
on their schedule. There's some Every game is a challenge,
no doubt. But I like the way Dartmouth started here.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
You know, I mentioned Army. I'm going to pull an
audible here. Army with a five to four upset at
Tait Rink over the weekend over you Mass and it
was Jacob Baron's first collegiate win, son of Marty Baran,
and if you haven't seen the highlights of a series
where he just was unbelievable way out of the goal,

(04:14):
getting back across, making saves to help preserve that that
was something. But again, well we always say anybody can
beat anybody in D one right now, and I think
more now than it ever has been. But yeah, we'll
talk more about Dartmouth later on in the week a
preview on Wednesday, we'll have a buy and sell fingers

(04:36):
crossed on that tried to do that last time and
technical glitches got in our way. But anyway, elsewhere around
college hockey, kind of a light week five of the
top twenty were Idle, and let me mention one of
those teams, Idle Penn State. Their last game was on
November twenty second. They don't hit the ice again as

(04:57):
a team. They'll have players in various places, especially Spangler Cup,
but they don't have an NCAA game again until January third.
I mean, how long a gap is that. That's almost
that's almost crazy. In fact, Derek, if you had that
much time off, what would you do with the team.
I mean, that's just way too long, isn't it? Go

(05:18):
to Florida? Now? You know what?

Speaker 3 (05:21):
You got to figure out ways to keep a team engaged.
We we play this weekend at air Force and then
we're off until we played I think it's a fifth
and sixth, and we don't play till the thirtieth, and
we've got break. Guys are going to go home, they're
going to go We're in practice for three days next
week and then we're not going to get back together
till twenty six. So you're going to have to do

(05:43):
have the guys do a lot on their own. But
for them, every day that they have people playing games,
I'm keeping my fingers crossed it on have injuries good points.

Speaker 4 (05:54):
That I guess you always have to worry and that's
what you have to worry about with World Juniors now
Spangler Cup coming in. You know, obviously the injuries are
one of the big things that you look at.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
You don't want to lose a player at a game.

Speaker 4 (06:07):
That is not doesn't matter for the college season.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
I know that you want to represent your country. That's
a big deal.

Speaker 4 (06:14):
But you know, I just right now I look at
Penn State in their schedule and I do wonder how
they stay fresh.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
You're probably going to have to scrimmage a lot.

Speaker 4 (06:23):
Obviously, their coach, Gatgadowski, he's going to be the Spangler
Cup coach, so he'll be away from the team for
a little while. But do you remember, Derek, the days
when it used to be more standardized, like every team
would play this upcoming weekend, then.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Most teams would be done.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
And it's over the last five ten years that coaches
have been a little bit more creative with their schedule.
They almost plan for World Juniors, and you know, you
try to find ways to make sure that the liabilities
of a World Junior or a Spangler Cup don't affect
your roster. You can't do that in all situations. But
I feel like that's what Penn State's done here. I'm

(06:59):
curious to see what they're going to be like in
January though.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Well, you also, you've got they're not going to come
back together. They're going to have finals. You're gonna they're
probably haven't They're not going to be back together as
a team until probably after Christmas. They're going to be
dealing with final exams right now, so there's gonna be
a little bit. You're gonna be dealing with a whole
bunch of other stuff. You're probably going to practice three

(07:22):
to four times a week. You may keep them fresh
in the scrimmage once a weekend. You're gonna be do
a lot of skill development stuff. This is also a
time we can work on things that you haven't had
a chance to work on a lot during the year,
six on five, five on six, four on threes, Things

(07:43):
that you haven't had a chance to really hit on
that you in practice that you can hit on during
off weeks. So look for look for them to do
some special thing.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Well for the teams that did play, some who didn't
have the weekend off also had some games, some good
sweeps Michigan five to one and four to three in
overtime at Harvard. Saturday's overtime win spoiled a three goal
come from behind third period from the Crimson. So Michigan,
who is not going to be unanimous but will be

(08:15):
number one in today's poll, continues to hold on to
number one.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
In They're just doing what Michigan does. Think about it
right here. They only scored nine goals this weekend. They
were below their scoring average this weekend, only scored nine
against Harvard. They were almost a goal plus below their
scoring average for the weekend. They're just they're really playing
well right.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
Now at Harvard.

Speaker 4 (08:39):
That was a great comeback on Saturday to get to
force overtime, but then you get into overtime and Will
Horkoff had a weekend, a four goal weekend for him.
He is really you know what, We've talked a lot
about some of the players at Duluth in terms of
their offensive production this year. That first line at Michigan
is really producing right now. And Horcoff kind of leads

(09:01):
away with that.

Speaker 3 (09:01):
I had a goal, five, five assists, six points, So
you're talking you've got right there of their nine that's
six points.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
From their top guys.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
I mean you're you're talking at a top line driving
the bus there. You got top lines all over the
country that hope they have those on a weekend, I
mean are a month sometimes and they're doing they're doing
that on a weekend. I mean nine goals, that's a
that's right now for some teams, that's a that's two weeks,
that's that's three weeks. And they're doing it over a

(09:32):
weekend and that's a down weekend for them. So tough,
the tough, the first world problems that they got right now.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
You know, in Michigan State with a sweep of Colgate
five to and four to one, number three Michigan State,
and I expect they'll still be number three in the poll.
We're recording before that comes out, but they're staying right there,
just waiting for Michigan to stumble to slip right back
into that. Although you got three, uh the top three
in the poll. I think Withisconsin will probably stay at

(10:01):
number two from the big ten. But that's not a
bad Colgate team either. So that's that's a solid pair
of wins for the Spartans. Also, North Dakota swept Bmige
State the Fighting Hawks coming in at number five. Last
week number nine, Quinnipiac over holy Cross but in overtime,

(10:23):
So you know, thumbs up for Bill Riga and his
squad taking the bobcast overtime. Not the not the moral
victory you want, but an indicator of how good the
Crusaders are. Stone Hill the other part of Quinnipiac sweep

(10:43):
on the weekend, and then Minnesota State over Northern Michigan,
and you know, Northern Michigan's just just need to win
somewhere along the line. But you know, some strong teams
continuing to maybe separate themselves from the pack. It was
maybe three or four weeks ago we were talking about
is this going to be really homogenized or is some
of the cream going to rise.

Speaker 1 (11:05):
We're seeing that cream start to rise.

Speaker 4 (11:07):
And you mentioned, you know Michigan and Michigan State, Michigan
State maybe waiting for Michigan to falter.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Well, they get to control their destiny. They play this
weekend Michigan Michigan State.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
That should be a great one of the best when
you think about that rivalry and how many great games
they've played, how many times have they both been in
the top three in the national polls when they face
off probably not that often.

Speaker 1 (11:28):
So I think that's fantastic.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
And then the other ones you mentioned, you know, holy Cross,
that was a good effort, a seven to six win
for Quinnipea hacking overtime the other night. Then they found
a way to get it done. That was not an
easy weekend. It was not a clean weekend for Quinnipiere.
But those are the two wins you need. North Dakota
they get the two wins they need against a good
Bamidgie team.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
And you know, I.

Speaker 4 (11:50):
Feel like you've touched on a lot of good wins.
Minnesota State, they're staying consistent. I feel like we're starting
to see some consistency out of these top tier your teams.
This will start for that separation. This will start separating
the top from the middle.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
It's Jimmy, It pumps Billy Regan and holy Cross and
that Steve Metcalf would be all over Jimmy about that one.
But the interesting one about that one is I turned
that off. Quinnpiak went up six to three and holy
Cross scord three late to tie it.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
And then overtime.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
But the one thing I'll talk to you talked about
it's kind of right sighting it. We talked last week
while it was gone a lot about the NPI and
how crazy it was. If you look at it right now,
it almost looks like it's normal. It looks normalish. Last
week it looked really crazy. Even on Friday looked crazy.

(12:44):
Lynnon Would had climbed to thirteen with their win over
Long Island, and lynnon Would was right in the mix.
Then they lost the next game and they're down to nineteen,
and it's just kind of everybody's kind of looking. It
almost looks kind of like it it should a little bit.
The NPI still got some teams that are still out

(13:04):
of it, like Boston College and Ohio State so a
little bit down, and ken Yukon and Maine, but it
looks like more normal comparably minus Dartmouth being at the top.

Speaker 4 (13:17):
Well.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
And I think I know a reason why in this too,
and that is because Michigan and Minnesota State have a
little asterisk by their NPI number, and that's because a
game has been removed at least one for defeating a
weak opponent that would hurt their NPI. And as those
start to kick in, that's going to get things more

(13:38):
where it is, and that's why the first half of
the season, before you've gotten to twelve weighted wins, you're
going to see some weird stuff. So same thing might
happen to Dartmouth after they start getting a few more
under their belts. So I think that's one of the
big reasons right there.

Speaker 4 (13:55):
And the other thing too is I think we need
to start accepting Dartmouth as a team it belongs in
the top fifteen.

Speaker 1 (14:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (14:02):
I don't care what your strength of schedule is. You're
going out and winning games. You belong in the top
fifteen right now. You start, you put together four losses here,
and you go eight and four into the break, I
believe they'll be down somewhere around thirty. But if they're
twelve and h or eleven and one at the break,
they're going to be top five, don't you agree.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
And we talked last week Jimmy that it's kind of
looks a little more.

Speaker 1 (14:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
I think we just saw results this week that have
started pushing the teams in the directions that they belong.
If you want to say that Dartmouth is the one
outlier right now, maybe I can even say Minnesota State
just being up at six. I don't know that that's
where they're going to end up, but as you say,
they've had a bad loss, take a bad win, taken out.
But every other team that's in the top fifteen right now,

(14:48):
maybe Western Michigan because they've had some bumps along the way,
but they played a really tough schedule.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
I look at this top fifteen, I'm like, this makes
sense right now.

Speaker 3 (14:58):
They were lower than that last week, and they've taken
a little step up. Yeah, they took a little bit,
a little big jump.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
So that's why I think it looks more normal.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
And you got to take out the sixteenth ranked and
probably you know, probably sixteen maybe for somebody. So really
the four top fourteen look fairly.

Speaker 2 (15:20):
Normal, and when we get to mid January, I think
it'll look really normal. And in fact, it me look
more normal than the pairwise would have looked because as
we've heard, the pair wise and the RPI were massaged
to try to duplicate what this would give us. So
it'll be interesting to see. We'll be able to start

(15:41):
placing some weight in that and maybe next season we'll
know how things went this year and know by the
calendar what we should be looking at but right now
we need to take a break. When we come back,
we'll take a look at holiday tournaments. This podcast episode
is sponsored by the NCAA for th four April ninth

Attendance is encouraged. Passion is mandatory.

Speaker 4 (16:33):
By your seat today at NCAA dot com slash m
Frozen four.

Speaker 2 (16:37):
How many teams are in the Men's Frozen four? Please
leave me. We're back with USCCHO weekend review, Holiday tournaments
The friendship for in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I got to
go on that trip. It was terrific to be over there.

(16:59):
I've already decided if I get evicted from the US,
the English speaking country I'd most want to go to
is the Republic of Ireland. I could live there very easily.
I think the people are great, they speak the language.
It was a terrific time and some good hockey played
and we really found out for sure. I think that

(17:21):
Miami and Union are for real. Miami got to ring
the bell as they won the Bell Pot. They had
a four nothing win over rit two nothing, laid a
couple of empty net goals in the Friday game, and
a three to two win over Number twenty Union in
the championship game. You know, great for Miami. The RedHawks

(17:43):
have really turned things around this year. They were an
impressive team. Although having seen both teams, I did not
get to see the championship game, but seeing the two teams,
I still I still say watch out for Union. But
to go from a three win season last year and
no wins in conference in the NCAC, for that is

(18:04):
really really terrific for Anthony and Marine and the RedHawks.

Speaker 4 (18:09):
Just to pick up a trophy, right, you feel like
you've really accomplished something. You participated in a holiday tournament,
you travel to a different country.

Speaker 1 (18:20):
That's all well and good.

Speaker 4 (18:21):
But when you think about where Miami was and they've
had a nice start to their season.

Speaker 1 (18:25):
To win a trophy, to know that you.

Speaker 4 (18:27):
Sat there in two games in one when you had
two chips on the table, I think that is something
that you can really hang your hat on. If you're
Miami right now, and credit to Union, that was a
very good showing for them. I think you're right at
that's a good Union team. We know that they're going
to be a top twenty team for most of this season,
but I still say, Miami build on this. This is

(18:48):
one you should be able to take back into some
league play and at least have some believability in your team.
I think this is a scary Miami team just because
of the fact that they will play spoiler all year October.

Speaker 3 (19:02):
Last year they'd beat Anchorage in like the middle of
October and didn't win a game the whole way, and
now they're going all the way over to the Northern
Island and bringing on the trophy. That's a big deal
for them. And obviously I think there is a lot
more to Union. I think Unions had a really good start.
Miami's had a good start and that's going to help

(19:23):
the NCCHC down the line. There's always going to be
somebody that finished at the bottom, but right now it
doesn't look like it's going to be Miami this year.
So Anthony Aureen, good job turning that team around this
so far.

Speaker 2 (19:35):
And I want to add one thing to this too.
You talk about picking up a trophy, but just being
in in that in that environment is a big deal.
I was talking to Rit's Associate athletic director, Jeff Siegel,
who was the equipment manager for the Tigers when they
went to the Frozen Four in twenty ten, and I said,
this seems, with the distractions and the activities, a little

(19:57):
bit like the Frozen Four. And he said, no, it's
exactly like the Frozen Four. And navigating appointments and public
appearances and schedules and fans and family and all that
very much like that NCAA tournament experience. So maybe a
little bit of that will help all the teams that
were in there to understand what they may see in

(20:18):
the postseason.

Speaker 4 (20:20):
Yeah, that is one thing with this tournament. It's a
logistical challenge. You're traveling a whole team. Most teams will
put together some sort of a travel package for their fans.
So now you've got fans traveling with your parents traveling
with you. You have some of these travel parties probably get
over one hundred and fifty.

Speaker 1 (20:36):
You're now in a different country. I mean, there's a
lot to navigate.

Speaker 4 (20:39):
I think in the at least my memory back at
I was there for the first tournament ever.

Speaker 1 (20:45):
There was a lot of media obligations. There were a
lot of visits to schools in the.

Speaker 4 (20:50):
Youth of the community, so the players had a lot on.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
Their plate during that week.

Speaker 4 (20:54):
As much as it is a trip and a social
and cultural experience, there was still business. And that's, you know,
credit to the teams that can go over there and win.

Speaker 3 (21:05):
Merk used to say, trophy season prepares you for the
NCAA tournament. We'll see if that starts and obviously leads
into the next one at Arondack Lake Placid.

Speaker 2 (21:18):
Yeah, and good for Alaska winning the Adirondack Winner Invitational
in Lake Placid, a two nothing win over Saint Lawrence
on Friday and three two over Clarkson on Saturday. All
the independent schools have a tough schedule and a heck
of a lot of travel, and it's got to feel
good to go back to the forty ninth state with

(21:38):
some hardware travel.

Speaker 4 (21:40):
I mean, Alaska and Alaska Anchorage this season have been
have had unbelievable travel schedules at this point, So I
really do hats off to Alaska. You're always on the road.
It seems these trips are really long. You're talking about
long plane rides everywhere. You go to Lake Placid, great atmosphere,
a great place to play this tournament, and you had

(22:02):
to play the two basically the host schools, Clarkson and
Saint Lawrence. You come away with the two victories and
they get to take home the trophy.

Speaker 1 (22:10):
Again, this is another program. It feels similar to Miami.

Speaker 4 (22:13):
There's been so many challenges for the two Alaska programs,
you know, since COVID and just budgets and program cuts.

Speaker 1 (22:21):
In the threats and all that sort of stuff.

Speaker 4 (22:22):
So I look at both Miami and Alaska winning trophies
this weekend. What those are great storylines for college hockey.

Speaker 3 (22:30):
I wouldn't have had that on my bo car to
those if you if you had had to pick the
two to win, it would have been those. Those probably
wouldn't have been the two pairings that I would have had.
But to go and beat Clarkson after trailing two one
after one and then get the late goal for Fairbanks.
But to go in to beat Clarkson, we'll be in there.

(22:52):
And then like you said, to beat the two home
teams with Saint Lawrence. That is a big win. Fairbanks
will travel, they get invited to these tournaments. They were
at the ice Breaker, they're there. Fairbanks travels, they do,
they will put the miles on and they're willing to go.
They've got the we'll play anybody mon and pats off

(23:13):
to them for doing it. But like I said, those
two were not on my bingo card. If you would
add if any combination, I probably wouldn't add those two
to win those tournament.

Speaker 2 (23:25):
And maybe next year some fans traveling up there is
They announced that Merrimac and rit will take on Saint
Lawrence and Clarkson in Lake Placid next year. Number nineteen
BU and number seventeen Cornell. They renewed their semi annual
rivalry at Madison Square Garden for Red Hot Hockey, and
these always seem to be close games, at least to

(23:46):
my recollection. Cole Eiserman scored the tiebreaking goal fourteen thirty six,
remaining a two to one win for BU. And that's
got to be a real boost right now for the teriers.

Speaker 4 (23:57):
I mean historically those scoring I feel like red Hot
every time one one two two two one really low
scoring games, but that you know it chose a lot
of the styles of Cornell, especially showing through when these
two teams play.

Speaker 1 (24:10):
Credit huge win from BU.

Speaker 4 (24:11):
They need some confidence right now, they need some consistency certainly.

Speaker 1 (24:16):
But you know they've been leaning on.

Speaker 4 (24:18):
Cole Eiserman a lot thus far, and he gets the
big goal. He you know, the strong player, and that's
that's a good one for them. That that's one that
you you kind of circle on your calendar when you
then they have the BC BU, they have the being
pot they in the years that they played red hot hockey.
That becomes the third one for them and that's a big,
big win for the Terriers.

Speaker 3 (24:39):
I would say, be you needed that a lot more
than Cornell did, even though obviously Cornell's got a tough,
tough little trip here to the North Country. But you know,
they were on a four game winning streak and they
had beat Union and they had lost to Dartmouth earlier.
But that's a that's a BU team that really needed
that win. And always great crowd. Cornell travels so well,

(25:01):
especially they've got so many alums in the New York
City area, and then to have this little level event
that they have and then to put seventeen thousand and
five hundred there. Every time they do it, it's a
really neat event. But to get the late goal in
the third period or mid third period, that's a big
win for BU.

Speaker 2 (25:20):
They needed that make to me wonder if we should
have some college hockey right in New York. We're a
little bit closer. Maybe maybe a Big ten team for
Rutgers or you know, the Colombia in the ECAC is
an IVY League team. I wonder about that, and then
I say, would it get lost in the midst of
everything going on in the Big Apple? But it is

(25:43):
a good exposure.

Speaker 1 (25:44):
That's the challenge.

Speaker 4 (25:46):
I think that's why we haven't seen a lot of
college hockey. You know, Colombia is the one team that
naturally has an IVY could probably, you know, make the
jump and try, but I think you get lost in
the New York market. I think going there once every
year on Things Giving weekend for Cornell, that one makes
a lot of sense.

Speaker 3 (26:03):
The Rileys have done a good job at Long Island.
They have made it work as far as a hockey program.

Speaker 2 (26:08):
Yeah, that's true. Wouldn't that be nice for them to
get one in MSG. I don't know if it would
make sense because of the capacity of the building, but
that could be fun, maybe a tournament. I don't want
to put more work on their plate, but they are
indeed off to a pretty good start this year. And
just backing up about exposure for college hockey, one of

(26:28):
the things I found at the Friendship for is the fans,
especially the school kids that were there on that Friday
early game, but in general the fans who've come to
know hockey there through the Belfast Giants seemed to be
thrilled with what they were seeing on the ice. They
were every time there was a hard hit along the boards,

(26:49):
there was a gasp and a cheer. I mean the
speed and the physical nature and the excitement. The fans
were getting it. And maybe we can wrap up just
by pointing out how important this game is. We got
to tour through some of the areas that you can
almost say war torn of Belfasts that have recovered from
the stuff that went on from the seventies through the nineties,

(27:11):
but now trying to do some rebuilding. The Good Friday Accord,
the opening up of the border. The Belfast Giants were
created to be a sport that wasn't Gaelic and wasn't English,
but was a third sport that everybody could come together
on and there's no color allowed in there except for

(27:31):
hockey colors at the game. And what that has meant
to try to help build some bonds with people who've
had separate and animosity over centuries really has been important.
So that is at the core of this tournament and

(27:52):
it was really fun to see that, and I guess
we can wrap it up with that. This podcast episode

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
