Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to a Pond Further Review for Wednesday, November twenty six,
twenty twenty five. I am Jim Connolly, joined by Derek Schooley.
Ed Trevsker is on location in Belfast, Northern Ireland right now.
This is upon further Review where we talk about a
topic or topics that we can expound upon from our
Monday podcast and this episode, as always, is sponsored by
(00:22):
the Men's NCUBLEA Division one Frozen four April ninth and
eleventh in Las Vegas. Go to NCAA dot com slash
m Frozen four for tickets. School's good to see you
on this Wednesday. It's Thanksgiving week, so I figured maybe
we could talk a little bit about stuff we're thankful for.
There's plenty of college hockey right now, there's plenty of
(00:44):
good topics. You got one off the top of your heard.
What are you most thankful for as we head into
the the Thanksgiving season?
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Well, first of all, I'm thankful for the excitement that
is being generated by college hockey. I think college hockeys
got a massive resurgence right now. I think there's a
lot of publicity for college hockey, not just from us CHO,
from the internet, from social media from all of its
(01:13):
loyal fans. I think there's a lot of mainstream, a
lot of new fans. There's a lot of excitement out
there for college hockey. So that's my main thing that
I'm very thankful for right now. Of all the enthusiasm,
the new fans, the current fans, the old fans, I'm
(01:34):
just excited about everything that's going on with college hockey
because I think we've got a great game. We've got
a lot of things that are happening that are exciting
in college hockey, and I'm excited to welcome the fans
out to see the brand of college, the brand of
hockey that college brings to the table.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
You know, I'll tell you schools when I think about
giving thanks and what I'm thankful for, I don't know
that I expected to be as thankful for CHL players
in college hockey as I am right now. But the
product that we're seeing out of the ice, and you
just kind.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Of alluded to it.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
We've never had a popularity for this sport like we
have right now. The interest level is at an all
time high, and it's because of a new pool of players,
a pool of talent from the CHL that has just
transformed this game, and I think that is so fun
to watch. I mean, this is this has been the
(02:32):
absolute question mark season, but it's been the absolute surprise
season to date. I've had a lot of fun to
this point.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
I don't think anybody would have predicted when we talked
about the CHL last year at this time that the
players that college hockey would have been able to get
into our game. I don't think we would have had
the Gavin McKenna, supporter, Matones, anybody that we've we brought
into the game. I thought everybody thought we had been
been getting the twenty year olds that didn't sign a
(03:02):
pro contract, and yes, it would have helped us, but
I didn't nobody maybe other than Brad Schlossman and Tom Serratri,
who claimed that they thought that we would have been
getting the best seventeen year olds, and if that's true,
hats off to them. But I really think that right
now that the developmental pyramid is changing completely and college
(03:27):
hockey's really taken a massive step. I mean, we're also
getting players that played in the East Coast hockeys last year,
played games in the America. I mean, we're getting the
best of the best right now coming into college hockey.
And I don't think it's going to change.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Well, we've already talked a little bit about this, schools,
but when you think about change, do you think we're
going to see more of those seventeen and eighteen year
old players, the high end Canadian talent or CHL talent
wherever they're from the in the globe coming to college
hockey as opposed to the CHL.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Now, yeah, I think you're gonna see it, like I said,
a different path. I think you're gonna see them maybe
playing in the HL for a couple of years, then
coming to college playing trying to get a different experience
from weight room experience, and with the with the ability
for UH being able to pay their players for revenue
(04:22):
sharing and and and nil money and different things like that.
So there's there's ways that this is going to make
our game even better. And I yeah, it's a it's
a way to start off being thankful, that's for sure.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Schools. I think you politically correct, you know, started off,
you know, starting with a big picture of great college hockey.
But I'm surprised that you're not most thankful that Western
Michigan won a national championship. I mean, you're on the lodie.
You looked pretty happy in Saint Louis last April. Uh,
you know, hanging with the likes of Brett Breckey and
other Western Michigan alums. You know, what is that been like?
(05:01):
You know, as a Western versing and Greg into to
boast a little bit, and I'm sure you'd rather Robert
Morris winning a national championship, but Western's pretty good.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Yeah, it was fun, It was It was fun. I
think you were, you were right there. He had a
front row seat for a lot of alums. And I
think the Western took over Saint Louis. I think I
don't remember the last time University and we've been doing this.
I think with us as a group of usc h
o for for four of them, now take over a
(05:32):
city like that, and Western did. And we had jamal
Maher's on the program, we had Brent work with us,
and just to see that and have a front row
seat to it, I think was pretty neat and pretty
exciting to do. So yeah, we were. We were. Then
we got to do it again with an alumni reading
in the summer, and so yeah, it was exciting. So yeah,
(05:52):
I was. I was thankful for that, thankful to be
able to spend a lot of time with some of
our old alums. And unfortunately then we had a guy
that one of our teammates that we played got to
see at the Frozen Four passed away in the summer
and that was our last time seeing them. So there
were there were some good times that that came out
(06:12):
of that and good memory. So yeah, thankful for that
as well.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
How about some other storylines right now? There are any
teams that you you look at and things that are
going on, even maybe the other side of it, teams
that might be, you know, looking past Thanksgiving, maybe thinking about,
you know, Santa Claus and maybe there's something I need
to be asking Santa Flora Christmas because things aren't working
out right now.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
I may obviously if you're you're you're Wisconsin at Dartmouth,
you're thankful for your starts. You're thankful for where you're
at right now. You're thankful. If you're Michigan State, You're thankful.
If you're Michigan. I think every team's got a top
team that's at the top that that's thankful. Northeastern's thankful
for Lawton Zachara the transfer portal. So there's a there's
(07:01):
a lot of teams that that have a thankful storyline
at the at the top of their their group. And
I think that you can continue to go down through
there through uh. I think the I I really believe
like all the the Independence are thankful. They all have
got a big win under their their their belt. L
(07:23):
I U's thankful for their win over Minnesota, Linda Wood's
thankful for their their win over Denver. I think those
are all teams that are they're thankful for things that
are happening and within college hockey. And I mean, this
can't be all about me. I know you're the host.
What are you thankful for in college hockey right now?
Speaker 1 (07:41):
Well, I'll tell you that there's one thing we haven't
hit on. We hit it on a little of Monday.
I'm kind of thankful for the n p I. I
think we're going to get an easier to describe tournament
selection process out of the n p I. The pair
wise worked, but it got clunky, you know, having three
(08:02):
criteria that you were always trying to explain. Now it's
kind of just put everything into one bucket. We call
it the NPI. It takes into account where you play
your games, what your results are, how you win them,
whether it's regulation or overtime. I think that that is
a good system, and I think we're finally going to
(08:23):
get a selection process. I'm not going to say that
it's not going to be questioned. And I think that
we're already having people say why do we have teams
like you know, BC and BU and Maine and Minnesota
that I aren't even close to making the tournament today. Well,
they haven't had a good season. That's that's why they
have plenty of time to make that up. But I
think the NPI is going to give us something good
(08:44):
here in college hockey. I know that there's a lot
of trepidation, but I'm actually positive on this.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
I'm going to look at the show notes on to
pass this back to you. Are you thankful for something
that where the Frozen four is.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Vegas? Yes, I certainly am. I mean it'll be a
great destination, right, That's a good place to put it.
We've been talking about going someplace different for a Frozen
four for some time now, so to go to a
different city, I'm excited for that. There is one side
to that that and anybody that knows me. I host
(09:20):
a podcast called usc cho Edge talks.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
All about gambling.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
I don't really bet on college hockey. I have been
a gambler in my life, but the gambling part of
college sports is actually starting to be a little worrisome
for me. And maybe it's even pro sports. We see
some of the problems we have with you know, rogue
players that are you know, pitchers in baseball throwing pitches
(09:46):
and basketball players pulling themselves out of games so that
they can keep their minute numbers load and hit prop bets.
I don't know if I love prop betting. So that's
the only concern I have when it comes to Las
Vegas and the Frozen Four. But I'm excited to go
to that city. It is going to be I mean,
it's freak Show Central, and now we're putting our favorite
(10:06):
event of the year, the Frozen Four, in Freak Show Central.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Well, I'm I mean, you should be thankful for the
committee that picked that.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Yeah, there was somebody on that committee that that that
knew that.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
Metcalf, Steve Metcalf. I hope they got you know what
the funny thing about that, And I'll tell you. That
is Las Vegas always wanted that, and we were, and
Steve was Steve was the chair of the committee, and
obviously I was on that committee. But we were waiting
for them. We didn't want to be the first. We
(10:40):
were waiting for another group, another sport to go there.
And basketball has already been there, so it wasn't ore
it was. We weren't the first. We weren't the first one.
And the n C Double A, you know, they they
they've been fine with it, and until what this past weekend,
the n C Double A was going to allow college
(11:01):
sports college athletes to bet on pro sports. They allowed it,
they voted to allow that, and then all this went
on with prop betting and players and now that actually
I think they made a good decision not to allow
player college athletes to vote to bet on pro sports.
(11:22):
I think that would have been you would have been
bringing the I think it would have been a horrible
decision because you don't want them to be involved in that.
Like you said, there's just too many bad things that
can happen. So they rescinded that decision that they made
this past weekend. But I think that there's so many
(11:43):
things that can that. There's so many positives that can happen.
You're in Vegas, as far as the bright lights, big
city of having the Frozen Four there, there's going to
be so many eyes on that, and it's a destination.
So I'm excited to take that there. And obviously having
it at the right there and by New York, New
(12:05):
York and the MGM Grand and right where the Golden
Knights play, it's a it's a beautiful building and I
think it'll be exciting Frozen Four there in Vegas.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Do we get big crowd you think schools.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
I think you're gonna have a sellout. I mean you
look look at the games that have been there already.
North North Dakota sold out there when they've played their
games there. The Arizona State North Dakota was sold out
there a couple of years ago in a Hockey Hall
of Fame game there. It's already been done. Yes, big crowds,
no doubt, sellout without a doubt.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
Well, if North Dakota gets back there, they need to
make sure that they have enough beer, because I do
believe they ran out of beer in Las Vegas last
time Going Dakota played there. One more you mentioned Steve
medcalf's being the committee chair, but Steve mccalf is behind
a pretty big initiative with College Hockey Inc. The Spangler
(12:58):
Cup coming out here same time as World Juniors, but
it's a different tournament, international tournament for the players that
are past World Junior age. This has become it's almost
taken on a life of its own here schools and
this is becoming a real high profile event for college hockey.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Yeah, I think it's something that college hockey should be
thankful for because it's putting college hockey another on another
big stage event. It's bringing more eyes to this to
our game. I think every league is represented. There's at
least one player from every league on the team. Coach
(13:37):
by Guy Gadowski going overseas playing in Spango Cup. That's
been a great event. Now the college selects are going
over there. Steve has been one of the people behind
the scenes, but really College Hockey Inc. Has put a
lot of time and investment into it. They've worked on
(13:58):
this for years and college hockey fans are going to
get to see not only World Juniors with a lot
of college players in there, but over the same time
frame they're going to see a Spangler Cup, and you're
going to see a lot of college hockey players that
are above the age because it can't be no freshmen
are on the team. It's sophomoresn't above. So you're gonna
(14:20):
see a lot of a lot of players that are
sophomores in above playing representing college hockey on a national stage.
So more games to watch over Christmas break when there's
not a lot of teams playing, and thankful for more
holiday hockey now.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
The US will have the college select team. Canada has
an All Star team there as well, but the other teams,
they are all European professional teams. They play together all year.
Do you think the college teams can hold their own
over there? What are you expecting from the competitiveness schools?
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Yeah, it'd be really interesting to see. Brian Hill's former
rit assistant coaches, has always been a long time polling
of this tournament. Has always been a big backer of
getting our best college players into this and allowing them
to participate because he's participating in as a player when
he played in Europe and thought this experience would be outstanding.
(15:14):
So hopefully we do a good job. Hopefully the players
represent US very well. I know that I've watched some
of our former players play in this and looks like
an outstanding event. Should be exciting. Like I said, the
more eyes we can get on our product, the better,
and it should be fun exciting in the time where
there's not a lot of hockey going on in between
(15:36):
Christmas and New Year's. I think it starts sometime around
the I think.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
They start practicing.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
Yeah, I think they start practicing like the twenty third
and travel over there in the twenty sixth, and college
hockey starts back up like the twenty eighth, twenty ninth
in that range, and I think that it'll be really
exciting to see some of our college hockey players going
back at it and putting a good product on for
(16:03):
our game. And hopefully none of our players get injured
which affected their team knock on wood, So hopefully everybody
comes back healthy and puts a good experience on for
or puts a good show on for college hockey, because
that's what we need. More eyes on our product.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
Well certainly plenty to be thankful for around college hockey schools.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and to all of our fans
out there. Hey, schools, Before lest go, what's your favorite
Thanksgiving side dish?
Speaker 2 (16:35):
Sweet potato casse role, a lot of brown sugar marshmallows
on top of it. We're having our full team over
on which is we're having our full team over Wednesday night.
So tonight we'll have everybody over for Thanksgiving dinner. So
(16:55):
we'll be doing a lot of cooking all day.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
That's awesome. I'm I'm I'm a stuffing guy. Although I
love the turkey neck, you gotta cook the neck for
me for a turkey.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
I don't know why. I love that one.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
I've been eating since I was a little kid.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
Well, you won't be eating much anymore. You're a big
diet guys, So rayboss, you'll be saving it. Just nibble
at it for the next month.
