Speaker 2 (00:13):
Welcome to a Pond Further Review for Wednesday, October fifteenth,
twenty twenty five. I met Trevsker alongside Jim Connolly and
Derek Schooley. This is the podcast where we catch up
on the things we didn't have room for on Monday's
weekend review. A couple of things we wanted to talk about,
and one of them was non conference records. Early on
(00:36):
in the season, a lot of non conference games are
played that are really pretty important, aren't they.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Derek, Oh, we always talk.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
We haven't used this line yet in our first two
weeks the same the game counts the same in October
as it does in February, And we haven't used that
line yet, but you know it was coming, and it's
here we are right now. Non conference records, the winning
percentages of are. There's three teams above five hundred, three
(01:10):
conferences above five hundred, three conferences below five hundred, and
then obviously the independence are below as well. But the
NCCHC leads the pack at seven twenty two, Big ten
six seventy five, Hawk East six nineteen, Atlantic Hockey four
twenty nine.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Right now, they were at five hundred going.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
In into the day, ECAC four twelve, CCH eight thirty
three point three percent, and the Independence two thirty five.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
What what do you make of it? The same thing
as we always do.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Right now, the big the big conferences are winning, they're
out of conference games. I think you're going to see
a lot of this with the new NPI figuring out
where this all shakes out.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Right now, you don't, but nothing really is change.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Nothing changes until nothing changes, to use another cliche, but
these games are all the same right now as they
will be, and so far the same teams lead the way.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
When we think about that, Derek, do we see I mean,
we've touted the fact that college hockey looks so different,
but the numbers aren't showing you. We're still seeing the NCCHC,
the big ten in Hockey East all over six hundred,
you know, six hundred winning percent of ncchd's over seven hundred,
(02:33):
and then the rest of everybody else is basically below
five hundred.
Speaker 5 (02:36):
And that's the way it's been. I'm waiting to see
something different, but here we are.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Though the gap was closer.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
Do you think it is Minic hockey was below thirty
percent previous They're close, They're forty two point nine ECAC
right now, Right now, I think the Independence while congratulations
also to Brendan Riley and Keith Bisher for getting their
first college wins last week. Again, we didn't talk about
that on the Monday show, but right now, that's where
(03:06):
one on thirteen is the Independent ECC six' nine two
not that. Bad Atlantic hockey eight eleven and two not that.
Bad THE cch has played a lot of non conference.
Games at, nine nine and, eighteen that's a little bit
low for that league and the independence they have to.
Play i'm in they're four and, thirteen SO i think
(03:29):
it's getting. Tighter it may not seem like, it but
it's tighter right.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
Now that's a that's a check back up in somewhere
Around thanksgiving when we've, played when you've played more like
fifty proNT of the.
Speaker 5 (03:41):
Games, YEAH i want to see the numbers. THREE i
feel like they.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
COULD i feel like this is the, year if ever
we can start seeing some change because you've just got
a larger player. Pool but we're not saying the numbers change. Yet,
again it's a small sample.
Speaker 6 (03:55):
Size, yeah we'll put it down for a fun further
review and again in, yeah AND i don't want to
be e or on, this but the change with THE
nil or THE, nl THE, NPI, NIL, NPI.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
I need, alphabet, YEAH i.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Know, anyway with a change in, that they are going
to allow teams as an at large with a sub
five hundred, Record so maybe there's enough better performance in
one of the leagues to maybe be looking at an
at large and a fifth place team from THE ncaac
or The Big ten two games below five hundred is
(04:33):
going to end up in THE ncaa. Tournament And i'm
sure that's going to raise no small amount of controversy
if that. Happens but we see that almost every year
a team that's above another team but they're below five,
hundred and they were excluded when the pairwise was in.
Place now with THE, npi who. Knows, anyway we'll watch
(04:55):
for that more to be reviewed. Further But, jim we
talked it a little bit On monday About maine and.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
What a good start they're off.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
To we knew that When ben bar got hired At
maine that he would begin to turn the program, around
and it sort of happened a little more quickly than people.
Thought are they at the point now where they are
going to become one of the elite.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
TEAMS i feel like certainly they're in position right. Now
And Ben barr has Done he's pulled a lot of rights,
Levers he's flipped a lot of correct switch is in
his few seasons. There he quickly has watched this program
big or played and win. Big they get The Hockey
(05:40):
East tournament title last, season they probably had HIGHER ncaa
expectations and now that, that's you, know kind of another.
Speaker 5 (05:49):
Goal but the way we saw.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
Them come out of the gate this week against Holy,
cross big crowds up there in Or, no the renovations
they did to The alphon in the, OFFSEASON i just
feel like they're just a team that, is it's they're.
BOYS i don't know if we should ever be talking
about them sneaking up on it on. Anybody they shouldn't.
Be we should remember That maine knows how to play.
(06:13):
Hockey they won national championships in the. Nineties they were
a powerhouse in the early parts of the two, thousands
but the dip was real and they're back in the
right direction right.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
Now that state MAIN i.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
WAS i spent some time up in the state Of,
maine this weekend and they loved their hockey up, there
and if that.
Speaker 5 (06:32):
Team can continue to build and.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Grow we talk About North, dakota we talk about, programs
Even Western, michigan and how many people they brought To Saint,
Louis maine travels when they're good.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
Team we didn't talk about On monday because they haven't
been ranked among the top. Teams understandably so Is. Miami
last year three twenty eight and, three they didn't win
a game After. October right now they're four and. Oh
they Swept Forest state at, home they went on the
road and SWEPT. Rpi they go To lindenwood for a
pair of games this coming weekend and then INTO nchc.
(07:08):
Territory But Anthony noreen has done a great job some you,
know a huge amount of turnover on the, squad a
lot of recruiting. Work but to go four to oh
and really have some momentum there really makes a. Difference
and it's nice to see that it's been a struggle
for that team under any of the head. Coaches not
(07:31):
too long after joining THE. Ncchc maybe a little bit
of leftover, momentum but after switching from THE ccha it's been.
Tough there's been some coaching changes a couple of them before,
this and now he seems to be off to a good.
Start So i'm interested in seeing what they're able to
do and seeing if they are able to get in
(07:51):
there and do some have some competitive play in THE.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
Ncc you, KNOW i think what's most interesting to me
ed is to see where they fit into THE ncchc,
now because you, know when they. Struggled you're not just last,
year but going back in two, years we heard a
lot of rumblings of maybe they'll head to a different,
league maybe somebody from THE ccha comes, over and maybe
(08:16):
they just need to. Switch you, know we Heard minnesota
in the state's name thrown around there a couple of times.
Time whether that happens or, Not i'm not even gonna get.
There But miami, now if they can start pulling their
weight within the, LEAGUE i think that they become valuable.
Speaker 5 (08:32):
For miami to be, strong and THE ncchc is a positive.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
Thing they want a program Like miami to be strong
because you've got to be able to show that it's
not just going to be the same teams that dominate
and you're not just going to have a doormat every.
Year you want the success to, rotate but you also
want to have teams at the bottom. Rotator if you
have the same team sitting there as a doormat every,
(08:57):
season that becomes problematic AND i think that is What
miami wanted to.
Speaker 5 (09:01):
Avoid it's a good. Start we'll see where this.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
Goes i'm really interested to see where it goes once
THE ncaac play.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Begins we saw them last.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Year they were two zero to, two and they've got
A for those who haven't been, there they've got a gorgeous,
campus they've got a gorgeous, arena and you know that
they they would get it going.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
There, eventually it just it went downhill and they couldn't
find a way to get out of that.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
Spiral it's it's good for college hockey to get them
rolling again in THE ncchc and not have them on
that massive losing, streak and like you, Said, jimmy to
see how they fit within their bagel be big hoping.
Forward but congratulations on a four and all. Start that's
a great start for.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
Them and somebody who's been a bit of a star
for them in these first four games is somebody who
you saw Around Atlantic Hockey, America, derek and That's Matteo
giampa who transferred over From. Canisius but a lot of t,
fers even some youth sports in the.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
Mix we were.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
Talking about it On, monday about THE chl and mentioning.
It BUT i Guess i'll pose this question with that bigger,
pool AND i think it's a pool that you said
is like an ocean last.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Week is it easier?
Speaker 2 (10:20):
Now is it maybe not, easier but more feasible to
really turn around a team when you have so many
more players to choose.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
From.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
ABSOLUTELY i mean it was that way when the transfer
portal started the fifth years and all. That, yeah absolutely
it is especially now with so many good. Players, sure
AND i really believe that that's going to be the new.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
Norm is THE i think you're.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
Going to see the pool kind of level out because
you're going to see THE chl start taking More americans
that all these leagues are just going to Be they're
going to be taking the players from The North. America
they're going to be taking the players in THE Bc,
league and those leagues are still going to have good,
players it's just they're going to be instead of being
(11:07):
from all these different leagues are going to be all
in the top, league and that's THE USHLD, chl potentially
THE Bchl Northern Eric being and from there on out
and then all the other leagues as.
Speaker 4 (11:19):
WELL i think To, Ed i'm very interested to see
where coaches and staffs that resist change where they end.
Up if you don't start changing your recruiting habits and
you don't start looking for MORE chl, players or looking
for more avenues or looking for different avenues to get
(11:40):
your recruits in the, door will you fall. Behind that's
a kind of a test that we are going to
see undertaken here in the next two.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
Seasons and IF i feel like we don't have a.
Speaker 7 (11:53):
Crystal, ball but you feel like if you don't change
your recruiting philosophy at this point at least, way shape or,
form that you will fall.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Behind Congratulations ALSO i mentioned independent coaches. Earlier congratulations also
To zach Albeit army with his first. Legion when it's
always great to win very early on your first, year and.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Especially one on the road against a team From Hockey
east as they Down northeastern two to. One you, Know,
JIM i think the answer to your question about whether
coaches and staffs are ready to change or not has
to do with. Retirements we saw a lot of coaches say,
Hey i'm not the guy for this era and, retire
(12:38):
AND i think we'll see probably a handful more this.
Year it's going to be a changing of the guard
because you've got to change the way you approach. Things you, Know,
derek you're sort of in between the older guys and
the younger. Guys you're kind of mid career right. NOW
i think you haven't quite down twenty two. Years well
here twenty two.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Years, yeah, OKAY i MEAN i GOT i Think i'm
on the back AND i know WHAT i AM i
do For.
Speaker 5 (13:01):
Look maybe you're on the eleventh. Hole he's coming up
on what are we talking about?
Speaker 1 (13:06):
IT i was thinkamore like Twelve, green maybe thirty walking
Their Holy bid my.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Ideas i'll listen to this.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
Show but but you, know but What i'm getting at
is that you're still at a point in your career
with the adjustments or something that you can. Make if
you're somebody who's got maybe a year or two, left
you might be saying That i'm, done.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
This is this is the time to move.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
On think, no matter, what no matter what, business no matter,
what no matter what sport we're, in there's gonna be.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Cheap if you resist, change you're going to be left.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
Behind it happens in, technology it happens in.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
In all of everything we.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
Do and SO i think that if you resist, change
you could be left. Behind and you've got to find
your mouse trap and build a better mouse. Trap AND
i think that that's where you're where you're looking. At
i'm at the point where you, know no matter how
old you, are if you if you want to win
and you want to end your career in winning a
lot of hockey, games.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
They're going to have to figure out how to get
the job. Done and that's. Changed that's. CHANGED i.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
GUESS i have no doubt that if this had happened
about six or seven years, Ago Jerry yorke would be
right in the middle of the change and figuring out
how to work with. IT i wouldn't doubt that he's
somebody that stayed right up with it all the way. Through, well,
anyway that's going to wrap it. Up some of the
odds and ends we didn't get to On monday on
weekend review For Derek, schooley For Jim. Connolly i'm Ed
(14:37):
trefsker and this has been a. Pawn further review
