Speaker 1 (00:00):
So I got to see the new Fantastic four film
from Marvel and Disney, directed by Matt Shackman, who's the
guy who also gave us the D Plus series WandaVision.
I do have a feeling that this review might not
get me a lot of new friends, but I just
have to call it how I see it. I'll be
going with a slightly new format for this review, just

(00:21):
going over the things that I did like and the
things that I didn't so much like. But enough Fantastic
four play. Let's get into it now. Oh and there
will be spoilers and not a lot more puns. I'm
over the pun thing, right, all right? So what did
I like? What worked for me? First off, the biggest
thing about this movie in which I have to applaud

(00:42):
is the lack of cheesy slapstick jokes. I mean, we
got a movie about a stretchy guy and a rock
man and somebody who turns into flames. It's so easy
to throw in cheesy one liners everywhere, but it wasn't needed.
They didn't have it, and it helped keep the serious
tone of this film, which I think was great because
we get so much senseless comedy in these MCU Films

(01:04):
that this was a bit refreshing. Next, let's talk about
the actors this way. It may be a little bit
of controversy. I don't know. I'm waiting for all the
reviews to roll in and see if I was the
only one who felt this way. But everyone except for
Pedro Pascal's read Richards, I really enjoyed. Vanessa Kirby as
Sue Storm was phenomenal. I think she knocked it out

(01:25):
of the park every scene. I just really felt it.
My all time favorite line in the movie was when
Sue Storm told Johnny to kill the surfer. I think
this was such a powerful line and it speaks to
the mama bear instinct of Sue and how she's badass.
I mean, Vanessa Herby right, the way they portrayed Johnny
Storm in this film is not just a hot shot jock,

(01:46):
but he actually came through it a little bit of jerkiness,
but just the right mix of heroesm right into it.
So I really enjoyed this Johnny Storm. It might be
my favorite iteration of Johnny on screen so far. Julia
Garner as the Shallabalver and a Silver Surfer was breathtaking.
I mean, she brought in everything in every scene she
commanded the rule she had that all or that just

(02:07):
made her feel so terrifying. But at the same time,
she delivered the lines in the way that she never
felt it was personal. I mean, this was Silver Surfer
knocked it out of the park. That's how you do
her Herald and Galactis man, What can I say? Getting
a giant purple armor clad man on screen without looking
silly is a feat all its own. I mean, it's

(02:29):
so easy to make this look stupid, but they pulled
it off. Fantas dang, no punts. They pulled it off well.
The voice individuals melched together. That made me feel like
he really was a planetary threat. Great job here. The
look of the film really convinced me that this was
not a part of the main line MCU. I mean,
everything just looked and felt completely different. And this was

(02:51):
the first time, maybe since the first Avengers movie, that
I ever felt I could watch one of these films
and not need any prior knowledge to happened in any
of the other films or shows. I mean, going into this,
I don't think I had any advantage over someone who's
just watching a Marvel film. For the first time. I
think we both got the same thing out of it.
There was no prior information that I could really give

(03:13):
to them, or questions that they could ask that I
could answer. This was an actual standalone film after we
were about thirty seven ish films in and that is
something that I didn't know if they could pull off,
but they did. I mean, we got Brave New World,
which borrowed from so many other films for so long.
We had Thunderbolts, which is a conglomerate of all these

(03:34):
characters from all these shows and films, and now we
got Fantastic Four, which doesn't need any of it to
be a movie. Kudos. Of course, there's not all the
things I liked about the movie, but we got most
of the big ones out the way. So let's talk
about some of the stuff that I didn't like so much.
And that might make you not want to subscribe, but
you should subscribe because you can see what I don't

(03:55):
like next or love next. You know, I don't know
subscribe to like Pedro Pascal has read Richards. I don't
know if it's just me seeing him on screen so
much throughout the last few years, or if he just
doesn't fit the idea of read Richards that I had
in my head, or maybe I'm a John Krasinski fanboy.
I don't know what it is, but something about him
just didn't grasp me as read. And no, it wasn't

(04:17):
the story. I think the story was just fine. I
think the read struggling to figure things out at every
turn was great. It's just something about him that just
didn't fit read to me. I don't know. Maybe I'm
alone here. Let me know in the comments how you felt.
Some people I know love him. I don't know if
there's anybody who doesn't besides me, but let me know.
My next issue were the unfulfilled storylines. I mean, they

(04:38):
put so much work into Johnny discovering what the surfer
said and where she came from, just for them to
have one little emotional moment. I really wish they just
delve a little bit deeper into what was going on
with the surfer. And I understand this is a fantastic
four film, this is the first one. Yes, we may
get more on the surfer later, but I just would
have liked a little bit more. It seems like I'm

(04:59):
nitpicking here, but that's just one of the threads that
I wish got pulled on a little more. Another was Ben.
I feel like Ben's Grim character wasn't developed enough. This
is three years into them being a Fantastic four, and
I still didn't get a sense of what Ben we
were really getting here. There was a moment where one
of the teachers from the school came out and spoke
to him, and I thought he was gonna start developing

(05:19):
his own storyline there, and it kind of just fell flat,
and he looks at the TV about him before he
changed into Ben Grim. I thought maybe we would get
that sad Ben Grim by Mo rock Monster thing, but
he's three years in, so I don't know. I just
feel like Ben was underused as a whole here. He
didn't really do much. Also, we had moment who I
think we could have gotten a little more out of it.

(05:42):
I understand he was probably the only little piece of
comic relief, and I don't want too much comedy, but
I think we could have got a little more out
of that. The movie felt like it moved pretty fast.
It wasn't too long in nowadays movie standards, kind of
in the middle almost two hour range with the credits,
but I kind of just wish we got a little
more of that. I know we got their origins flashed

(06:04):
and to begin in from here and there with red
Golds and more Man, but I feel like that was
another thread where we didn't get too much out of
the New mold Man, which brings me to another gripe.
And I know a lot of people are gonna say
it's nick picking, but it's a film, and that's what
I do. I didn't really get a full sense of
the world here and what they understand and don't understand.
When Silver Surface showed up, they were kind of like, hey,

(06:25):
it's a Silver Lady. She's threatening us, and the kind
of jumped into Fantastic four is gonna FTL jump. I
didn't even know they had faster than light travel ships.
I just don't feel like the world was developed clear
enough for me personally. I didn't know what the capabilities was.
Do these humans know about aliens? Are the Fantastic Four
is the only people they know that went to space
and return is just like a giant shocker to them

(06:48):
that there's a Silver Lady. Can They kind of seem
like shocked and amazed, but then not too much and
then missed the fantastics, like, hey, we're just gonna take
off and follow them and go talk to a giant
man and come back and just be like he wants
our baby, and that's it. There's no questions of what
is he, what does he look like? Are there other aliens?
You know? So I don't know. I just felt like
it was a little bit jumbled and rushed in there,

(07:10):
and the world itself didn't feel real to me. It
was all like a Disney theme park Tomorrowland type of feel.
I feel like they filmed this whole thing in the
warehouse and just said get a bunch of extras. I
don't feel like the supporting cast was really existence. I mean,
you got the main guys, you got Surfer, you got Galactus.
Everyone else was probably just one or two lines thaways.

(07:32):
It felt really just empty and lifeless. At some point.
I know they had a city and there were people
moving about, but I just didn't get those supporting feelings
of this is a real world beyond them. It was
so fantastic for Centric, which could be a good thing
for some people, but for me, I kind of like
to feel that there's more going on. Even with the

(07:53):
final scene when Galactus came. I understand from a story
standpoint why there were no citizens there, but I would
have loved to say, see some people running through the street.
Just Galactus is doing things and saving people and things
like that, But it all just seemed like they just
filmed it on a budget in front of a green
screen or something. Another thing that bothered me was even
though Galactus was threatening and imposing in his size and

(08:15):
his voice and things like that, I didn't really feel
that he had much going on up there. Was kind
of just like, I'm gala like this, how he planets
hair Silver Surfer, she does stuff for me? Like what
would possess Reid Richards to think that baiting him out
with a baby on a trap would actually get him
to come out of his ship? And why did it
actually make him come out of his ship? Could he

(08:35):
not destroy the planet and then get the baby? I
really don't know, Like I'm seriously genuinely asking. I know
people are making up all of these fan theories and
reasons why and assumptions, but was there an in story
reason that he had to come out and get the
baby instead of just sending Surfer back again? Maybe I
missed it. I don't know. Let me know in the comments,

(08:55):
Please help me. I want to love this movie. And
then also the plan to tell the planet to somewhere else.
When he was doing his demonstrations, it looked like to
teleport the egg he had to have another place built
for the egg to be received. I didn't really get
how that would work for the planet. Did they have
a space station somewhere that they could teleport too? Is
it okay for planets to just randomly teleport anywhere? I

(09:18):
just don't know. It just was hard for me to
grasp all of that. Maybe I'm slow. Go ahead, tell
me in the comments, I'm slow. Oh you missed it,
Please explain it to me. And if the surfer did
come and destroy all the warp pads, why when Galactus
came and he knew the plan, did he just not
swipe and knock out the warp pad He just waited
aimlessly and tried to grab the baby until he got

(09:39):
pushed into the warp pad. And what exactly was his
plan for Franklin Richards. Did he plan to raise him
to cure his hunger? Did he know he can make
universes or something? Was it ever stated exactly what he
was gonna do with the baby. Maybe you could have
gave it to him. Maybe he was just gonna help
him out and give him some cosmic baby food. I
really didn't even sense that he would harm him. I

(10:00):
don't know. Maybe it's just me, Like I said, maybe
I didn't pick up on those things. Please let me
know what was his true intentions for the baby? What
was he actually going to do? When was it stated
in the film? I hope he wasn't gonna eat him.
It was just so many just weird and random questions
from a story standpoint, and it worked really well as
moving along the story. But I just felt like it

(10:22):
could have went under maybe one more rewrite, just to
tighten up a little bit of things. That's just my opinion.
I mean, Galactus couldn't just Madden NFL spin roll off
of Sue pushing him into what he knows as a trap.
He's not that strong or intelligent. Was she that strong?
Why not close his hand when he's carrying baby? Franklin Richards?

(10:42):
Why I leave it open for Johnny to just grab him?
I mean, if I have something very important and life
changing in my hand, I tend to just you know,
I might close it in my hand and just have
him floating around for somebody to grab when they can fly.
Did Benjamin Grim throw a single punch in this film?
I've seen him run into things, he ran across a bill,
did he tackled the surfer? But did he actually punch?
Did he actually clapber anything? But with all that being said,

(11:06):
I'm gonna have to just give this movie for me
a fantastic five. It's a five. Actually. I love the
way they portrayed Galactus. I think he looked amazing. I
think it all went really well. So I'm gonna bump
that up to a six because I'm a Galactus fan
and this wipes out that whole purple cloud thing for me.
So I give this movie a six. That's the best

(11:27):
I could really do for it. It was okay, but
I felt like it lacked a lot and it kind
of wasn't theatrical level to me. I don't know what's
going on with a lot of these things lately, but
I just didn't feel that big movie pizazz after credit
scene gave us what we expected. I don't think I
have to discuss that. If you've seen the movie, you
know what I'm talking about. I am very much so

(11:48):
looking forward to Doomsday. I think this is a great start.
If this was a refresh for the NCUS way of
doing films, I am happy with it. I think the
standalone format is great and I also think the more
serious tone is amazing. But this film, to me, ultimately,
outside of Galactus and Surfer, is very much so forgettable.
But if you guys think different, which I'm sure a

(12:10):
lot of people will waiting to hear it down in
the comments, and make sure you hit the subscribe because
I got a lot to say about a lot more movies.
Maybe we'll agree on something else, maybe we won't. But
this just deal with value old media and I'll see
you guys next time.
