they refuse to let darkness define them where they choose
the light, even when life stacks the deck. Our guests
tonight didn't just choose the light. He built a whole
album out of it. From school craft in Detroit to
the top of skyscrapers and his visuals, He's showing the

protect your peace, stand your lane, and let your shine
speak loud. You're not just here for a talk show.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, Detroit's own RB Kid is bringing
a fresh wave of positivity to hip hop with this
new single, Top of the World. Born Roderick Brooks from
the school Craft neighborhoods, he built his name from grit,
from hustle and a refusal to take no for an answer.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Influenced by legends like ice.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
Cube, Nas and Rick Ross and inspired by Kobe Bryant's
relentless mindset, RB Kid turns real life lessons into uplifting,
motivational music.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
So please join me in saying welcome friend to our Yeah,
welcome to the show.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
Thank you, thank you for absolutely miss Yes sir, yes sir.
Before we just really kick off thes and get into
the life and time as an arty kid man, what's
been on your heart and mind lady lately? Just getting
the music off and just really be coming on, you know,
a new face on the scene and letting the fans
(04:15):
know that I'm definitely here and getting this music out.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
All right, fresh on a scene.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
Yuh So, So when did when when did the love
of music start for you?
Speaker 7 (04:27):
It definitely started way way back, definitely up under my
brother and his friends, listening to a bunch of records
and different artists, and now was definitely early nineties.
Speaker 5 (04:39):
So yeah, through through the through the beginning it was.
Speaker 7 (04:42):
It was definitely, uh a roller coaster starting off with
them and just getting everything together.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
So when did it start turning into like a passion
for you to start creating that same you know, the
same elements that you were falling in love to back
and then.
Speaker 7 (05:01):
Definitely two thousand and five, Yeah, around two thousand five is.
Speaker 5 (05:05):
When it took off to being serious.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
It's like, how did you start you just talk just
writing or freestyling.
Speaker 5 (05:12):
Oh no, it started off with my brother.
Speaker 7 (05:14):
And his friends actually just trying to trying to do it,
you know, have a make a group. They end up
not getting really far. But a lot of times we
would just you know, playing the singles and.
Speaker 5 (05:28):
Stuff like that.
Speaker 7 (05:28):
The bent stories would bring out where it's just like
the song, the instrumental, the a cappella, So a lot
of times we'd be riding around in the current.
Speaker 5 (05:37):
Just freestyling to the beats.
Speaker 7 (05:39):
So that's when it I kind of like took it up,
you know, took it off really serious, more serious than
my brother and his friends. Have you in this group too,
I wasn't. No, it was just my brother and his
two friends.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
So yeah, okay, have you you and your brother ever collabed?
Speaker 5 (05:57):
No, we never collabed, but a lot of times we.
Speaker 7 (05:59):
Were just restyle against each other, and he was just
pretty much pretty much just sharpened me up, you know,
more than what I was.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
So it was just good practice. Yeah, it was good practice.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
Like, since you had like a front row view of groups,
you are a solo artists, right, I am? Yes, Why
did you choose the solo route versus the group route?
Speaker 7 (06:27):
The solo route is just I've been in the group before,
but it's just a lot more, a lot more hectic
the business go on there. And yeah, with a solo artist,
I just feel like I could just take care of
more stuff along a lot more visuals, especially on my own.
Speaker 5 (06:45):
Music and stuff like that. So yeah, I'd just rather
be a solo artist.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
It's just better, got you, man?
Speaker 4 (06:51):
Yeah, Yeah, I've been in both in grouping in a
solo act as well, man, and it's definitely different.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Dynamics is like, oh yeah, now I don't have to
share versus and the.
Speaker 5 (07:03):
Courses, right, Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
But at the same time, I missed the energy that
me and the homies hand in the studio putting together record.
Speaker 7 (07:16):
I do miss that, Yeah, I do miss those vibes. Yeah,
a lot of the shows and open mics we would hit.
But yeah, when you're trying to get a little farther,
you want to make sure you got everybody from the same.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Page, and that is hard to do.
Speaker 5 (07:30):
Yes, yes, yeah, man.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
All right, So Top of the World is the single
that you're promoting now, and it radiates confidence, it radiates gratitude.
What moment made you say, yeah, it's time to create
a feel good anthem?
Speaker 5 (07:48):
All beginning of summertime?
Speaker 7 (07:50):
It was, yes, probably beginning of summer where I just
was just working on records, and then that beat came.
Speaker 5 (07:56):
Across, you know, across across.
Speaker 7 (07:59):
Me, and I held it for probably a week, just
you know, just trying to see which direction I want
to go with this record.
Speaker 5 (08:06):
Does the beat just give you that vibe?
Speaker 7 (08:08):
And plus at the time was just good, you know,
not really saying, you know, no stress was going on,
but nothing big, So I just.
Speaker 5 (08:15):
Had a clear mind to get that record off.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
Yeah, I think it's perfect. The perfect time for a
record like this. America is not really feeling good right now,
right absolutely, and we need.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
A picker upper, you know, yes, no doubt.
Speaker 4 (08:32):
So yeah, man, So you described the album as good
Vibes only. What inspired that direction and what does good
vibes mean to you personally?
Speaker 5 (08:43):
Oh? What inspired that direction was?
Speaker 7 (08:46):
Just so I was halfway done with the album and
that was probably last year. Last year, halfway down with
the album, got majority of his songs and just listening
to it, going through them in the studio. And I'll
definitely made that decision by myself for you know how
this album was making me feel going by the songs
on there and just the cadience of everything, and it's
(09:09):
just like, yeah, this album is like it's definitely more
of an upper you know album than anything motivational type albums.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
And that was your intention?
Speaker 5 (09:21):
It was, no, it was it was I didn't want to.
Speaker 7 (09:24):
I had just came off of making a mixtape called Purge,
so I just I definitely want to lead a the
more gritty, grimy you know on the on the mixtape,
got a little bit on the album, but yeah, the
album majoritly is just a pick up, you know what
I mean I like to pick her up.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
I like that. I like that. On the mixtape you're
more grittier. Yeah, on the albums you're more.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Polished, professional. You know, you can put on a suit,
go to awards show things.
Speaker 5 (09:50):
Like that, right, Yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
No doubt. All right. So base Heads Production gives this track.
You know, it's a bright, airy feel. What made this?
Speaker 4 (10:05):
What made his sound the perfect match for the message
you were going for? Or did you get the message
after the beat?
Speaker 5 (10:13):
I got the message after the beat.
Speaker 7 (10:16):
Yeah, I pretty much get the beat first, take good
time and listen to it and just let my mind
just flow. Yeah, but I definitely created that, you know
that that lane to go that way with this record?
Speaker 3 (10:30):
Nice?
Speaker 5 (10:30):
Is that?
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Knowing how you create you know, music first and then
inspiration for the words.
Speaker 5 (10:36):
Uh, Sometime it go down like that.
Speaker 7 (10:37):
Sometime I could get the words first and then I
have them create the beat. But a majority of the
time I get to beat from the from my producer
and just take time and listen to it and make
sure what I'm gonna go through, you know what I'm gonna.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
Make this record about?
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Which process do you enjoy more?
Speaker 7 (10:58):
I probably enjoyed the uh, probably listening because that's why
my mind could really free out and figure out you know,
instead of just putting some words down on a beat,
I could really figure out what direction. So I really
probably like listening to the beat first, getting that vibe.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
Yep, I know, I know it's probably something like I'm
last asking a lot of questions about the process, but
we have a lot of like young listeners who are
who want to do what you do, who want to
learn the ropes and you know, trying to figure out
their way into this thing. Like so given that when
you're when you're jamming to rocking out to a beat,
do you ride and you ride around in your car
(11:39):
or just like a studio setting or in your room.
Speaker 7 (11:42):
No, I definitely ride around in the car listening to
that beat, pumping it up. I mean, and this is
without words. I could sit for a good hour or
so in the car just listening to it, just vibing
and just figuring out different formats that I want to
go with it.
Speaker 5 (11:59):
So that's why I see they had a process for me.
It definitely a lot.
Speaker 7 (12:02):
Of times I can get a beat and it just
you know, the words is just already there and the
Melanie is already there for me. But yeah, I say,
eighty percent of the time, I'm listening to that beat
first and taking a good time to figure out what's
gonna go on there.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
Absolutely a lot of people don't don't realize that the
car is a man sanctuary.
Speaker 5 (12:22):
Sometimes it is.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
It had mental processes go down in the car.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (12:28):
Yeah, I can't even tell how many records, you know,
off albums and mixtapes that's been created by me sitting
in the car and just you know, just just tapped in,
just alone.
Speaker 5 (12:39):
You know what I mean, zoned out yep. So that's
definitely how it go with.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
Me, sir so.
Speaker 4 (12:47):
And in the song you wrap, imagine if you didn't worry,
probably wouldn't see no gray.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Yeah you know, I guess you're talking about gray hairs hows. Yeah,
I got hairs. Yeah, a lot of stress hair fell out.
Speaker 5 (13:06):
I feel right.
Speaker 4 (13:12):
Yeah, How has your mindset changed over the years to
reach this level of clarity?
Speaker 7 (13:20):
It's changed probably, uh, very not so fast, but it's
it's been some time. It's taken some time because I've
really wanted to map out, you know, which way my
bio is gonna go on these albums, you know what
I mean, it's just like, yeah, your process and how
(13:42):
what he's talking about on the albums and just trying
to set up for the next and the you know,
the next album coming down. So it's it's changed because
you've got to concentrate a lot more on the promotion
wise and just making sure.
Speaker 5 (13:55):
Everything's sounding good, engineered good, and.
Speaker 7 (13:58):
Uh yeah, yeah, the process has been much more boss
like this year because I'm definitely taking care of a lot,
you know, in the streets.
Speaker 5 (14:06):
On my phone, you know, with myself.
Speaker 4 (14:08):
So speaking of that, man, your name stands for kicking
indoors daily. Yeah, what doors did you have to kick
in just to get to this stage of your career?
Speaker 5 (14:22):
Yeah, so many of them. I've had to go to
so many open mics. I remember going back. I remember
years ago having to.
Speaker 7 (14:31):
Go to open mics every night from it was an
open mic from Sunday to Sunday in Michigan.
Speaker 5 (14:38):
It was just that heavy.
Speaker 7 (14:40):
So actually hitting the streets and grinding and getting that that.
Speaker 5 (14:45):
That grinding that grid out.
Speaker 7 (14:47):
But yeah, that's that's pretty much what it's about.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
Man.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
That was my favorite part of being an artist was
open or yeah, local shows, traveling here traveling there, yes,
before the internet really came in, and.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
Like you can do it the lazy way.
Speaker 7 (15:05):
Right, that's how it is. It's like, yeah, the game
has changed the definitely, the game has definitely changed.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
I mean it's no knock to them because you know,
the game evolves and you change. You gotta go the
way the game is going. But I realized that that
personal part getting the flyers out, you know, getting new
sit Now just put up a camera and I got
on boxes and T shirts.
Speaker 5 (15:35):
You know that don't Yeah, yeah that's how I go. Now.
It's crazy, but you just you just evolved and just
yea a roll with the purpose.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
But I hear people like music fans really want to
get back to that. Are you hitting the road this year?
Next year?
Speaker 5 (15:55):
I am this This year, I'm making a run.
Speaker 7 (15:58):
And I'm still trying to catch the open Mics and
all of that stuff like that if they're around.
Speaker 5 (16:04):
But yeah, I will be hitting the.
Speaker 7 (16:06):
Roll this year and trying to perform as much as
I can, so you'll definitely catch me here and there.
Speaker 8 (16:11):
Yeah, so you listeners who don't know, the open Mics
is also a place for you to practice new records
you work on some stage present. You know, you can
see how how the crowd reacts to music before you
introduce it to a larger crowd, and they may not
feel that.
Speaker 5 (16:28):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
Yeah, so you came up listening to like some hard hitters.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
People I love are like Ice que Rick Ross.
Speaker 4 (16:37):
He's all right here and there which part of their
I'm a fifty fan, so that's why I gotta.
Speaker 5 (16:46):
Yeah, Yeah, this is definitely good.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (16:50):
I like Ross because it goes off of just how
much you know, work he's put in his projects and
just different yeah, different symphonies that he's brought.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
So yeah, yeah, I definitely respect his crab. But man,
they don't make it easy, like dagn why you just
can't be like kosher or whatever?
Speaker 5 (17:07):
Right?
Speaker 3 (17:08):
Yeah for you.
Speaker 5 (17:09):
Guys, you're right, I feel you, I feel you.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (17:13):
Does that ever happen to you and music where your
fans get divided?
Speaker 3 (17:17):
Well, let me ask you this first. Are you in
any type of like musical beef personal beef? Noah?
Speaker 5 (17:23):
No, definitely not. I'm like definitely not.
Speaker 7 (17:26):
You know, it could be yeah, it could go down
like that, but no, for for gratefully.
Speaker 4 (17:31):
No, Okay, So it's truly good vibes only in your
in your presence that I like that, Yes, exactly. So
back to nas Ice Scoop and Rick Ross, which part
of their storytelling influence your own lyrical approach?
Speaker 5 (17:48):
Uh?
Speaker 7 (17:48):
Nas, I have to say nas all the way because
it's his storytelling is just all about the hood and
just what he go through in Queen's Bridge, So he's
gotta be like one of the best to jewels storytelling.
But I wanted to like get myself on that path
where I'm really telling some stuff.
Speaker 5 (18:06):
So I'm sure more in my future it'll get deeper
and deeper. But I've got records like that now on
Good Vibes Only. Yeah, that's tells some good stories. So yeah, just.
Speaker 7 (18:16):
Trying to master that, that storytelling, and yeah, put out
some some great records off of.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
That, definitely telling good stories. Hold a responsibility for an artist.
You said the world needs motivation.
Speaker 4 (18:33):
What responsibility do you feel as an artist to lift
people up?
Speaker 9 (18:38):
I think my responsibility to lift people up is just
more so talking about more real life than just the
fiction stuff. I ain't really hating on the artists that
just talk all of that gun play and getting money, but.
Speaker 5 (18:54):
Really showing the real side of things. Of life. So yeah,
it's gonna be the difference with me. Yeahs far, all.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
Right, all righty well, guys, it is time for some music.
We have RB Kid with this song on Top.
Speaker 4 (19:12):
Of the World, and then we'll be right back with
our traditional hot seats.
Speaker 3 (19:16):
Our listeners love this part of the show.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
Just in case RB doesn't know, it's called the hot seat,
and that's where we allow our guests to perform for us.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
Whether they want to sing, rap, do.
Speaker 4 (19:28):
Some spoken word, tell a joke, tell a story, give
some advice, play instruments, or do nothing at all.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
That's cool as well. Right now we're about to jams
and some music.
Speaker 5 (19:38):
It's called Top of the World. We'll be right back.
Speaker 10 (19:41):
Stay tuned with the on Top of the World.

Speaker 11 (20:24):

you can have it.
Speaker 11 (20:48):
I look back at the journey that I've been through,
and I managed feeling blessings every day and never taking.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
Shit for the brand off of the world.
Speaker 11 (20:54):
I feel like I'm a chilling it. Half of them
don't love me. Other have them learn to deal with it,
work the lot, and earn the right to hit the dealership.
So I take my time when I'm gonna shine because
I be feeling it on top of the world. I
feel like I'm out here killing it. Half of them

Speaker 11 (21:14):

That's why I feel I needed on top of the world.
I feel like I'm aunt here chilling it. Half of

Seeing me? Fine? Let me think it's something Uh okay.
Speaker 7 (23:49):
First, I wasn't young and watching Odie's come up sun
and I was destined to get paid. I'm talking Monday
on the Sunday niggas thinking that I'm playing, but it's
really nothing funny. I've been off the living. Hey, this
is crazy nigga going dummy. I know I were fancy watches,
but the nigga ain't got time strictly out for handling business.
So I'm down to die of mine. Truth be told.
(24:09):
It's not about how much money, but how much you grind.
If you grinding, you pass level one? Forever will you shine?
I remember being broken, so I came up with a plant.
It was get a fucking back. That was my number
one demand. So I'm thinking if I grind enough, my
feet is in the sand. Money pilet tell a pilot
wake me up when we land.
Speaker 12 (24:29):
Yeah, fire by alright, I like, man, this is our
mic drop moment.
Speaker 3 (24:40):
You like dang man, all these sigaments. Yeah yeah.
Speaker 4 (24:44):
But uh, when you think about your journey from school
craft to where you stand today, what's the one mantra
that keeps you rising?
Speaker 5 (24:54):
Uh, It's just the love of hip hop.
Speaker 7 (24:56):
That's just number one, uh in my heart, like since
day one, you know, just not worrying about the pressure
of trying to make and it be you know this
big artists, just loving the music.
Speaker 5 (25:08):
Myself, just loving hip hop just period.
Speaker 7 (25:12):
So yeah, that's what keep me motivated, is just the
motivation of just hip hop.
Speaker 5 (25:17):
Period, you know, hearing other artists, new artists bring.
Speaker 7 (25:21):
Stuff out and then just gauging myself in there and
trying to see if I can do better than the
bigger artists that's already.
