I'm loving the good truck? Heyman, I appreciate that. How
are you doing it? I'm allright, you know, just just hanging

(07:08):
in there for sure, for sure, man, before we kick things up,
before we discover your wise in yourhouse, we want to know about
those who so tell it to us. Man, how did you discover your
passion for creative music? Yeah?Yeah, you know, I was,
you know, about five years old. Man. I can remember like I

(07:30):
was yesterday, like it was yesterdayfor real, you know. I just
I woke up from a nat youknow, and my brother in the living
room playing fifty cent I think itwas Wankster, you know, playing that
on one on system part you know, that sprus to music video and I
just woke up and now the firstthing I saw and like I was never
I was measurement Riz for real,Like I just couldn't believe what I was

(07:55):
saying, you know, in yourstory. So that was the first album
I bought and like ever since, man, like that's gonna inspired me to
make music because really his story forreal? Yeah, man, that's what's
up. What do you think aboutfifteen hour days? Man? I look
at him, that's like really pavingthe way. I see so many artists

(08:16):
like coming up in the game, like really giving him his flowers, like
from the Baby to you know,so many artists like giving him, you
know, his recognition he deserves.Like I'm not paving the way for everybody
like to come up and this hiphop you know industry and you know,
make a name for himselves beyond youknow, just rapping. Like you know,

(08:37):
I remember when he didn't vibing thewater like you know what I'm saying.
So yeah, it's just so manylive of news that he showed that
you know that that's that's capable foryou know, young African Americans who goes
through so many tribes and tribulations, you know, absolutely, So man,
can you shut up ship light onthe more moment that propel your belief and

(09:01):
self worth? Uh? I meanI probably you know. I I had
like many, you know, inspecies, but the one that really really stood
out for reals my mom losing thehouse you know, in twenty seventeen.
Like that really showed me like, you know, I need to I need

(09:24):
to take heed in that and likereally make sure that that never happens again.
So none of my family numbers, you know. So I feel like
around that time, you know,I experienced that with her, Me and
her, you know, when peoplecame, you know, it was time
to go. So yeah, oncethat happened, like I was like,
man, this is you know,I gotta be be somebody, you know.

(09:48):
So yeah, did did you taketo the grind instantly or did it
take a while to you know,to kind of get your foot I mean,
being and younger, you know, just being young and trying to definitely
took some time. I was ableto grow into it. You know.
I just graduated with my bachelor's andbusiness administration, just started my business you

(10:11):
know officially last year. So Imean I feel like, you know,
definitely. I've been taking steps andsome steps definitely paid off. So I'm
working now. I'm getting that, you know, you know, trying to
look at every avenue you know, coming from you know, I was trying
to make it for real. Man, it's all it. It's all that
matters, man, It's to tryso so now worth it. That's a

(10:35):
powerful title. Well before I getinto that, what made self worth a
central theme in your music? Iknow you got it in your head that
hey, this doesn't need to happen. You're on your entrepreneur thing, You're
on your school thing. You know, you're you're improving as a human being.
But what about the music side? When did it become your main banner

(10:58):
or your main theme? Man?Really, I you know, me and
me and my homies like from backof Jacksonville and ship Blueberg County definitely got
it. Got a salute. Butme and my dogs for real sits growing
up. You know, we asin my mama house, you know,
throwing music like I showed them theway, like, you know, just

(11:18):
for music in general. You see, I'm just having an outlet. So
around that time, just growing up, you know, back back around the
way for real, just growing up, you know, and then my dog
catching years and shit, I mean, I don't excuse me for my language.
Now you put people you know,my people were calling me catching the
years for real. In the system, you know, we we we work

(11:41):
more than that, you know whatI'm saying, Like they showed us every
day when it comes to numbers onbloom birds, you know, just just
in general, like we really putmoney and into the world for real,
like we really stand out. Solike we as African Americans in the community
and for the culture, like wereally put on so we really worked it,

(12:01):
like we gotta recognize that. Andall right, they already recognize we
just gotta you show me recognize that. And I understand. So just from
an experiences, man, like Idon't want none of my people struggle after
risk their lives, you know whatI'm saying. I want them to risk
their minds and put their minds towork and come up with solutions and you

(12:22):
see me take take their people outof their situations so that to never happen
again. Like generational wealth is reallywhere my mind is, Yes, sir,
that part, man, I loveit. I love it. So
back to the title worth it.That's a powerful title. How does this
song reflect to your personal journey andexperiences? Man? For real? Just

(12:48):
everything you know what I said, just wrapping it up for real, just
just basically just going through life everyday as you know, as in young
African American male just in amernic becauselike just going through life, man,
just trying to figure it out.Like I had plenty of examples, you
know, placed in front of me, so I may it sure like they

(13:09):
wrongs I don't do and they rights. You know, I take notes and
you know take heed. So reallyman, just yeah, just just my
just my walkman in general. Forreally just the things I've been through.
Everything I talked about, my mypeople, he feeling, my mom is
a addy thing man, growing upwith me and my brother. Like music
is really really my passion and reallywhat I love and like when it comes

(13:33):
to music, like everything I do, Man, it's worked it, It's
worked it at the end of theday. Yes, sir, man uh
tell us about fifty cent and howhe shaped your approach to hip hop.
Yeah, just his story man, like everybody knows his story again shot nine
times right, especially as you knowas young, like it's just young and

(13:56):
growing up like you know, fiveyears old just here and that you know,
it's this action pack. Man,it's just real life. Because I
really, you know, then't thinkI was gonna make it to see eighteen,
you know what I'm saying. I'mtwenty seven now, like, so
I really thought that, you know, growing up, even at five years
old. So I don't know ifit was because the TV I watched and
the music I listened to, butman, I really, you know,

(14:20):
just what I experienced at the endof the day, Like I really thought
that in my head, so youknow, to hear him like succumbed to
them, you know, the conditionsand purvibe and make a whole career out
of it. It's just you Iknow I can do it at the end
of the day. And for reallythat's what That's what inspires me every day
for real, just trying to choosepeople lives absolutely. Man. That that

(14:43):
just tells about the power and musicand when it comes to your own music,
how do how does it make youfeel when you listen to it?
Man, I've really been steering awaylike just just trying to be positive and
like, you know, just justshare a light on what we're capable of.
For real. That's really what mymusic and guaranteer us. You know,

(15:07):
like I say I was I wasyoung. You know, my music
speaks for itself. You know.Of course I'm a I'm a talk how
I talk, But at the endof the day, I'm really just trying
to share a light, man.And like I know, people know this.
They got phones, they be onthey be on the weather, they
be on TikTok, they see allthese videos. But it's like, what
we're really gonna do about it,you know, And me rapping it just

(15:30):
makes me you feel, it's amessage to myself. Like at the end
of the day, it's a messageto the people and to myself because I'm
still I'm still a working progress, you know what I'm saying. So so
yeah, that's just what it is, man, And of the day,
man, just just trying to dobetter for real. Like that's just how
I express myself. You know,I'm I don't really talk to myself,

(15:52):
but that's another way to talk tomyself. I'm gonna mind myself like what
it's all about when I'm doing it. For Yeah, absolutely believe that too.
Man. All Right, We're aboutto jump into the single Worth and
then we'll be back to put Tulliin our traditional hot seats where he gets
to perform for us, whether that'srapping, freestyle, poetry, spoken words,
singing, playing an instrument, uh, telling a joke, telling the

(16:15):
story from his life, or justgiving some advice. But for right now,

All right? And speaking of that, man, congratulations on Dungeon Records co
founding that this big step. Butwith the current landslide in the industry,
what's the driving force behind this label? Especially when you have all these groups

(24:33):
online telling artists that they don't evenneed a label. Man, look,
man, you just if you're reallyin tune with it. You definitely watched
the exclusive interview with your guiding onon. I'm sorry I had to forgive
them dang earn your leadser I'm sorry, y'all. You know I'd be tuned

(24:56):
in earn your leadser I know youhad to really see it if you really
intul with it. But yo,guy, you broke it down man,
Like it ain't nothing wrong with signingthree sixty. I'm looking to sign with
a record label. You see mejust a partnership deal just to you feel
me fuel my record label. Butain't nothing wrong with signing with deal.
So I don't let them get inyour head saying you know it's it's bad

(25:18):
to signing deal. Ain't nothing wrongwith, man, if it's gonna change
your family's lives if you if you'resmart, if you fool with with your
money, you know what I'm saying, it might be a bad term.
But if you're smart, you makeyou know sound financial assessments, you do
what you're supposed to do, andyou surround yourself with the right people,
it'll work out, man, likeit's money will be made. Man.
So these labels ain't sting you. They just they think we're dumb. And

(25:41):
we're not dumb, man. Wewe were smart. So we just gotta
use that to our advantage and excel. Yes, sir man, I second
that, man. That was agood answer, just to add to that.

lot of people will have advice foryou. Some take what you can out

(26:04):
of it and leave the rest tothe side. And no shade to those
gurus, but most of them, guys are not even working in the industry.
They're just looking at numbers and data, you know. Oh Tom,

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
