(01:57):
sometimes you just need a better approach, like what are you talking about dating?
Check it out. There's no lawthat says you have to respond to
certain situations in the same way youalways have. In fact, one of
the best ways to become more effectiveis to experiment with new and different responses.
There's no good reason why you haveto approach certain tasks the way you

(02:19):
always approach them, and when youlook for new and different approaches, you'll
likely find an even better one.So if you're going to improve your performance,
you must be willing to do thingsdifferently. For each task you need
to do today, think of onething you could do differently that might improve
your performance. It shouldn't be toodifficult to think of just one aspect change

(02:40):
and that could result in a significantimprovement. So avoid getting stuck in a
rut and give yourself some options.Test the new approaches. There's always room
for improvement, and if you keepat it, those improvements can really add
up. Challenge yourself to find newand better responses to the same old situation.

(03:00):
I mean, come on, guys, challenge yourself to find new and
improved ways to get things done.Your best possibilities are waiting to be fulfilled.

technology, education, entrepreneurship, entertainment, and sometimes even a thing that we

(04:33):
the minds of these incredible human beings, you know, the ones who are

the world. Friday Killers, Smokeand Lady A the Lyris Star are the
creative minds behind Undisputed. Those whoour special guests is tonight the Hood Crunk
Group. Their music is an energyfield combination of club and life, featuring

(04:58):
a signature crunk sound. So let'sgo ahead and get them on. Yo,
Yo, Yo, what's up?What's up? Welcome to the show.
Hey, how's it going man?Hey? What's up? You gotta
you gotta as it going great? And just dropping excited to do this interview.
With the show for show Man,we're excited as well. Um,

(05:23):
so we're gonna get kind of heavyin the first part, right So,
Um, I think as artists,as creatives, we have some type of
maybe artistic responsibility for what happens insociety and communities. That's just me personally.
Um, how do you guys feelabout like personal responsible responsibility in the

(05:46):
face of not only your community, but systematic injustice and oppression. Well with
that, with that, you know, we just we view the world,
you know, faith out for thethings that you know, what we see
and what people so so, Imean we try to touch on things like

(06:08):
that in our music as well. And you know, when we see certain
things going on, you know,we you know, we discussed it and
we talk about it, and youknow we try to you know, come
come together and see what we cando to you know, put in our
creativity to try to motivate people totry to you know, think more positive

(06:31):
and move forward to our better situationsand look at things in a different light.
Right on, right on, Yeah, I totally agree with that.
I do think we have a bigimpact in the career that we're in to
make a difference, you know.So I definitely think that what we do

(06:53):
it matters. Yeah, for sure. Is that a hard thing to do
though, especially since the endust havetheir own agenda or the way life was
supposed to flow, They kind oflike paint the picture of how we're supposed
to live, right, Uh,I mean, is it hard to go
against the green stuff? Well?Yeah, it is, especially being the

(07:15):
creators that we are and coming fromwhere we come from, because we like
original artists, and you know,we believe in our own creativity, and
you know, like back and theearly two thousands and the mid nineties,
and you know, people was morecreativities and they had to be theirselves versus
now the industry paint everyone to tryto force everyone to go the same direction

(07:41):
in the music. So we stillwe still we're still holding on to that
original creativity, so we try toget everybody to fill us on on that
note. Yes, I definitely agreedwith that as well. I do think
that, um now it's just moreof a same sound and same style and

(08:03):
everybody are the same look, youknow, That's what That's one of the
biggest challenges that I feel like, especially with a lot of the females too.
Nowadays, it's like following this sametrend, and that's hard when you're
trying to do something different and youcome in from a different place to create
a different sound. Are you tryingto market just something original or something different.

(08:26):
It's definitely a challenge. So we'rehere for it. We're here for
it absolutely, and thank God forUndisputed. How did you guys start?
So we started off? It isno like at first it was like I
was with a quick backman of day. I'm not gonna miss the name,

(08:46):
but you know, we were doingmusic and I actually bought a track from
one of the members and he kindof screwed me over on the track,
and I was like, hey,I think I saw doing my own music.
So I started producing my own tracksand then started rapping to him.
And then later a later A heardme rapping and she was like, hey,

(09:09):
I like to get down too,and I was. I told her,
I'd say, well, as longas you know how to write poetry,
you can wrap. So she gaveit a shot, and then over
the years she evolved, you know, and my pretty much already was you
know, I already had my ownsquag. You know, I always been
a writer two you know, soI just jumped in there and I was
like, you gotta live me inyou know. Yeah. So we've been

(09:33):
going strong since two thousand and four. All right, dope, man Friday
was making to sell like you couldn'trap when you first came aboard. Oh
my god, no, now Ithink what it was. So he definitely
gave me my edge. And because, um, he felt like when I
started off, you know, Iwas a little rusty and I was kind

(09:54):
of like dated the way that Iwas rapping. To him, he felt
like little daty, you know,I want you to kind of bring your
energy up. So he helped mewith that. I'm gonna give him that.
Yes, he was more so onthe old school so pepper flavor,
you know, but we were inthe mirror stage. God, yeah,
yeah, he had to bring upthe speed. I got the eye,

(10:16):
that's dope. So as you twowere, you know, forming this this
new bond, this duo. Um, how did y'all styles and compacity compatibility
evolve over time? Basically it allcame off the concept of the record label.
The name of the record label,I'm Freckles Music Production. I wanted

(10:39):
to come up with the concept ofa group that goes with him. So
we came up with undisputed, andwith Undisputed came the hood crunk sound that
I created to you know, separateus from anyone else. And with that,
you know, I started just puttingbeat together on the keyboard and we

(11:03):
went from there with the sound, and we decided to you know, and
as we went on and on rapperencetogether, we came up with who we
were, who we wanted to be, you know, because any artists that's
coming up in the game, isbest for them to find their sales,
you know, because that way youcan separate yourself from anyone else, you

(11:24):
know. So that's that's what wedid. Yeah, I definitely think it
just came together, like we wantedto do something hype too. We wanted
to have energy when we performing onthe stage. It was a little it's
a little different than you think, you know, because a lot of the
artists, you know, they werekind of going with like more of a
slow tembo or whatever. But wekind of love the music that had the

(11:48):
hype and all that. So wedefinitely brought that energy in with your tracks.
I think that's what we did withFriday tracks, you know. So
the tracks kind of gave us thatsound and we just kind of put the
words to it to bring it alltogether. So really nice Friday. Are
you still producing the beats for thegroup? Oh? Yes, sir,
Yes, sir, that's my passion. Cool deal. So, uh,

(12:09):
can you guys like walk us throughthe concept behind Gain on My Level,
which is your latest album? Okay, the concept between I'm gain on My
Level. We're like, in myopinion, I don't know if you heard
the album or not, but Ifeel like I'm a competitive artist, a
competitive rapper. You know, I'mnot in competition in anyone unless someone not

(12:35):
directly, unless someone you know, came at me directly, then I would
be in competition. But I ama competitive rapper. So that's whether the
gain or my level um concept camefrom. Okay, Jo, how many
songs on the album? U tunytwo? Oh? This twenty two?

(13:01):
Because we've been the thing about itis we've been doing music for a while,
and you know, and when wewere finding rid of to release,
I was like, we need togo and clean out the closet. So
that's why we wind up dropping somany at one time. And we're actually,
you know, we're not gonna, you know, just show our albums
like that, you know every time. It's just that we've had, we

(13:22):
had so much stack we had toget rid of versus. Now you know,
we're more on a regular basis, and we got some new material coming
up as well. That's gonna bejust this dope friend sign hood crunk sound,
and he's just won't be as manystacked one on the album. Yeah.

(13:45):
Do you want to add to that, Lady? Ah? No,
he And that's pretty much that, okay, okay, yeah, twenty two,
that's that's a lot of songs.Um, it's pretty uncommon. Yeah,
yeah, I think twenty two though, it's like I believe, um,
let me see here. Out ofthe twenty two solos, yeah,

(14:09):
eight of the tracks are solos byme, five of the tracks are solos
by Lady eight, and then nineother tracks are us together. Yeah,
and that's really cool. We liketo do that so that way our fans
will get used to kind of like, you know, hearing an album that's
a little different like I do likethat. We throw some solos joints on
there, and then we have ourtones where we come together and we just

(14:33):
tattles up as well. So it'sjust like it's good energy, you know,
absolutely absolutely. I mean I preferLoan albums anyway. Um, yeah,
I think it's rest now. Yeah, yeah yeah. They called that
what a double uh what they calledwhat is overtween the song? Ye for
double itsp or something like that,I think they said, you know,

(15:00):
so yeah, all right, allright. So your music is often described
as hood crunk. Can you explainwhat that means? Okay, hood cronk
is basically, you know, it'sbecause like were we from Um everyone was
more so you know on the flowertype mellow tracks when they rep you know,

(15:24):
and a couple of artists came outand they did a few high song
but it wasn't a thing in Houston. So since we were from the hood
and I started doing crunk cracks, that's what made us want to you hood
crunk to brand the label, thebrand the label sound right, and you

(15:48):
know I'm from a shippy so Ilove chron music. Yeah yeah, how
did Houston look at you guys?Well, how did Tech just look at
you guys? Well they still lookat it. Still, they still looking
you know, because you know,so we were in a time of like
for million ears, So like Iwas sound that different. You know,

(16:14):
everyone that hears our sound that Iwas saying, Hey man, y'all don't
even sound like y'all from Houston orwhatever the case. Still we'll be like,
well, you know, we're tryingto stand out. We you know,
we want to be different. Thesound that we create, we do
it intentionally for it to stand outfrom other Houston music. And you know,
Tex experiod, Like if you would, if you listen to it or

(16:34):
anybody that's out there listening, ifyou dig into it, you'll actually see
how different we are when you's Idefinitely think it's going on people though,
Like from pharm Down Music, wealways we always had like you know,
people saying, wow, what's thesound? Like who made the track?
Like oh, the phone was dope? You know. So we haven't really

(16:56):
ran into anything negative yet, SoI thank God for that. That's and
it's been cool. It's been ablessing dope, dope dope all right.
How do you guys balance the partytracks with more personal songs in your music?
I think that's how Friday Kill usmost mostly with the party track,
so like on like we both gotthat energy we love to turn up.

(17:22):
But also it just comes a time, like you were saying at the beginning
of the interview, where a reallife you know, situations are like if
you're going through something that music isalso needed out here in the world.
I also feel like, you know, um, it's not done enough.
So you know, people go througha lot of different ups and downs.
You know, we had the pandemic. We have some things that we touch

(17:45):
and go on topics like that,so that kind of stuff is really important
to steal putting music. So Ithink a good balance is just you know,
it's very important. Yeah, butwe find a way to do it
absolutely all right, we're getting readyto play Dope and then we'll be right
back to put Undisputed in our traditionalhot seats. That's where they can perform

(18:07):
for us if they want to.They can wrap, sing poetry, spoken
word, tell a joke, tella story from our live player instrument,
or just give some advice. Butfor right now here it is Dope.
Stay tuned. We'll be right back. I don't think they read they're ready

I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
