the Wade Killer Pro Wrestling Podcast ten years ago. This
week on the Flagship, I was joined by guest co
host Jim Valley from PTERW Torch. We talked about Roddy Piper,
and we also talked about Raw from the night before.
Jim talked about his lengthy two thousand and one radio
interviews with Piper and Rick Flair, and then callers talked

(02:12):
about their experiences with Piper away from the ring. We
also talked about other topics from RAW as I noted,
and also the Diva's Revolution and more so, let's get
to it. This originally live streamed on August fourth, twenty fifteen,
and then from there we continue a special coverage of
Roddy Piper with my interview with Johnny Fairplay who was
Roddy Piper's personal assistant and talked about working closely with

(02:36):
him for quite a long stretch, with unique insights on
Roddy Piper as a person when the cameras weren't on,
and just an interesting discussion about one of the more
fascinating all time characters in professional wrestling and Roddy Piper,
with live calls and emails. This is the Way Keller

(03:06):
Torch Live Cast. I am Wade Keller, editor and publisher
of the Pro Wrestling Torch weekly newsletter since nineteen eighty
seven and also Pwtorch dot Com since nineteen ninety nine.
I can't believe that was that long ago now, and
also host of this the PW Torch Live Cast. I
host on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This week's schedule will be

(03:28):
a little bit different in a variety of ways. I'm
hosting today Jason Powell is celebrating his birthday, unable to
join us today. Normally, Jason Powell from Pro Wrestling dot
Net is the co host on Tuesdays, and it's always
a great show when he's on. But instead we'll be
bringing on board Jim Valley, a PW Torch contributor, a

(03:50):
long time Pro Wrestling Torch newsletter reader and subscriber dating wayback,
and the timing works out pretty well. Jim is abody
who knows Roddy Piper his career and knows his career
well and also has interviewed him on his Total Chaos
radio show back in the late nineties early two thousands,

(04:13):
And because of some scheduling issues, this week kind of
have a cool augmentation of our normal live interview format
on Thursdays. Instead, this Thursday, we're going to include some
of Jim Valley's interviews that he did with Roddy Piper
back in two thousand and one, one of them, and

(04:34):
by the way, the full interviews if you can't wait,
the full interviews from that I'm going to describe here
will go up on the VIP website today or tomorrow,
and they are long form interviews. One is from March seventeenth,
two thousand and one, with Roddy Piper and Rick Flair together,
and all I can tell you is Piper managed to

(04:54):
embarrass Ric Flair with some of the stories that he
was telling out of school. They shared a good life.
But Rick is like, I hope this isn't national radio,
So walk you through that. All right, Let's go ahead
and bring today's co host into the conversation.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
Somebody who had an opportunity to interview and work with
Roddy Piper on his radio interviews and a contributor to
Progressing Torch, Jim Valley. Jim, thanks for joining me today
filling in for Jason Powell.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Yep, my pleasure.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
You know.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
Sorry, I'm not as good as Bruce Mitchell with Roddy
Piper stuff, but you know I'll do what I can.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Well, you you talk talk about Jim, Go.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
Ahead, it's fun. I'm sitting here on the line, taking
my afternoon off and everything to be with you. And
then what do I got to listen to you talking
about Bruce Mitchell a great he is. Did he ever
meet Piper?

Speaker 4 (05:51):
No?

Speaker 3 (05:51):
Did he ever hang out with Piper. No, Piper never
threatened to burn my house down.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
So come on, well, Jim, what is your what is
your handle on the PW Torch Forum.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Oh, I'm Mitchell for Life.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Okay, good. I just want to establish that you are
a big Bruce Mitchell fan, despite everything you say about
him publicly.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
And privately.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
Yeah, Jim, for for background for people, I mean, we
have new listeners all the time. Obviously a lot of
people come here when they hear about us on the
Steve Boston Show or through word of mouth. You are
a obviously a long time prost and Torch subscriber, now
contributor to p W Torch, and you've been on the
live cast many times. But you also hosted a radio
show during the Attitude era called Total Chaos Radio. U

(06:37):
talk a little bit about your background, and we've that
or kind of bring that over to your dealings with
Roddy Piper also and kind of lead into that.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Sure, you know, I grew up in a town halfway
between Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon, and so we got
both Seattle Television and Portland TV. I mean literally, you know,
had we been into the slightly farther north, we never
would have gotten Portland TV. So you know, growing up,
you know, you had the a w A. Bruce had,

(07:08):
you know, Crockett Promotions. No, you know, the nw A.
You know, I had Portland Wrestling, Don Owen, and you know,
Jimmy Snooker came through there, and you know, obviously Piper
and I guess probably to the modern fans, Buddy Rose
is the most famous. You know, Jesse van Tura came through.
You know, a lot of a w A guys came through,
and I think a lot of that had had a

(07:30):
lot to do with you know, both Verne and Don Oen.
We're kind of questial promoters. But anyway, so I grew
up watching Portland Wrestling, and you know, so I saw
Roddy Piper probably a few years before most most just
average casual wrestling fans back in the day saw him.

(07:51):
Because I mean he really came to national prominence probably
during his US title run in the mid Atlantic. That's
probably when he was, you know, came to most people's consciousness.
And then obviously he became you know, pretty much a
household name of the WWS. So you know, Rodny was
you know, I was ten or whatever I was when
Ronnie came through Portland, and so you know, he was
kind of a childhood hero. And you know, while I

(08:12):
wouldn't classify him as a hero anymore, I always followed
his career and I got into radio, and I was
twenty years or so in radio, and I was working
in Portland and Ronnie always you know, Roddy married a woman.
His wife is from the Portland area, and so, you know,
you know Georgia's mid Atlantic run, they eventually laid down

(08:35):
roots in Portland, so she went back home with to
raise the kids. And you know, he would you know,
obviously still be on the road, but you know, stop
in Portland and things, and sometimes he'd make appearances and
things with Donoens. You know, sometimes he'd come and just
do an interview or do an angle, or he would
you know. Actually, it was really funny, is I noticed

(08:55):
that every time Rick Flair came to town as a kid,
he was always wrestling Roddy Pipe. And I was thought, well, yes,
it's just because he was a big draw and he
was US champion and all that stuff. But really it's
because you know, Piper was in talent.

Speaker 5 (09:07):
They were best friends.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
So I was working in Portland in ninety nine, I guess,
and to make ends meet because I kind of took
a pay cut because they talked me into it like
an idiot. But to make ends meet, I worked at
a really small station also on the weekends and just
did some work there. Just like I said, pay a
few extra builder, I have an extra walking around money,

(09:32):
strip club money. But anyway, Piper knew the owners of
this radio station and he would sometimes come in there
and that's how I first got exposed to him. And
then and then over time he did my show, and
then over time I sort of I didn't set out to,
but I earned his trust and then I sort of
for for I don't know, a period of a couple

(09:53):
of years. You know, I was kind of like his
go to guy for projects, you know, when where he
had like a website idea and or he was going
to do a pay per view and he needed a
broadcast partner, or he was going to do a radio
show and he wanted to co host, or you know,
there's a lot of a lot of projects that went nowhere.

(10:14):
That was kind of his m It wasn't just me,
but so you know, I built a relationship now, I
don't want to people to misunderstand that, you know, I
haven't I hadn't talked to Piper in probably ten ish
years now that he's gone. And and also you know,
I wasn't exactly in the inner circle. We had a
you know, we were very cordial, and I think we
had a mutual respects for each other and that's why

(10:36):
he liked me. But you know, I don't want anyone
to imply that we were I don't want to imply
that he and I were we're best friends, or or
I went up to his house or hung out with
his family, or he and I, you know, exchanged Christmas
cards or went out and partied or anything like that,
because that is not not the case at all.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
Well, Jim would and by the way, I want to
let colors know, would be taking calls in just a moment.
You can get on the phone banks at six four, six,
one nine two eight. If you want to talk to
us on the show, please push one on your touchdown phone.
That'll move you into the collar queue rather than the
standby queue. And we're gonna talk about last night's raw too,
so feel free to call about the usual topics we
discuss which is usually focused on Raw from the night before.

(11:15):
James Caldell and Pat McNeil did a live call in
show yesterday right after Raw for over an hour, and
you can check that out also if you want to
just be consumed with raw analysis, Pat joins James at
the top of the show on Monday nights at eleven
thirty Eastern after Raw, and then James sticks around and
takes calls and discusses Raw in depth. You can always
find our back I was gonna say, back issues our

(11:38):
archived audio shows on demand at pw torchlivecast dot com
that is free for everybody pew toorch livecast dot com.
And again tomorrow Pat McNeil with Hugh and Less from
Sheet Sandwich. Thursday, we'll have excerpts of Jim Valley's Roddy
Piper interviews from two thousand and one, some vintag stuff. Jim,
I haven't a chance to listen to do all of
the interviews yet, but the I got a sense enough

(12:01):
from the interview with Rick Flair and Roddy Piper that
that was a blast and that, as I noted in
the intro, Rodny Piper said some things that embarrassed for
Flair a little bit, and we'll save that as a
teaser for Thursday in terms of the details. But Roddy
told some Flare stories and I Flair is like, hey, hey,
this show isn't national, is it. Come on, Roddy, you're
saying too much.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
Yeah, he was in fine form that day. I was really, really,
really grateful, and to me, it's the highlight of my
radio career. I won a bunch of awards and covered
a bunch of stuff, but I that's my favorite thing
that that's ever happened. And really I don't do much.
The only thing that I do is that both of
them think that they're only going to be on for

(12:43):
a couple of minutes, and I'm doing my best to
stall and trying to keep them there for as long
as I can, so they could, you know, give us
more stuff, give us more embarrassing stories. There are stories
that Piper tell that I've never heard anywhere else. You know,
he talks about sometimes in Puerto Rico, where you know,

(13:04):
I mean, no one's just I don't know anybody who
talks about stories from from Puerto Rico really, other than
you know, the Bruis of Brother Bruis of Broder stories
and they talked about stories from Puerto Rico in times
they had with the Briscoes, and also Jose Gonzalez speaking
of Bruis of Brody and some other stuff. But yeah,
Piper is in fine form. And you know, I thought
that one he's, you know, he's Ribven Flair and they're

(13:25):
having fun and he's he's, you know, Ribven his buddy.
But I also thought that, you know, he does. I've
seen interviews with them together since. I mean mine was
from two thousand and one. Also that was also the
day they announced no more WCW. That was a weird day.
But and Piper talks about that too, and so does Flair.
But also, you know, I've seen them in other interviews

(13:46):
together since, but I haven't seen them behave that way
in any of the interviews. So I think it's it's
really something special. It's it's it's tremendous.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
So yeah, if you're not a V team ember, you
can hear a good portion of it. Were not going
to skimp on it. I mean, we're gonna give you
a good, solid, long excerpts of the two interviews that
you did with Friday Piper in two thousand and one,
but again for the full interviews and sooner we're gonna
go ahead and post those on the VIP website, so
check that out. I talked about that earlier Friday show.
By the way, I also want to note Bruce Mitchell

(14:18):
is on vacation this week with family. He is in
the mountains away from Wi Fi. Travis Bryant is on
his annual excursion to It's actually just an amazing journey.
He goes on an excavation archaeological dig once a year,
and so we will have a different show on Friday.

(14:38):
I may be hosting that and I may have an interview,
and if I do, the show beyond at this time
five thirty eastern two thirty Pacific, rather than the seven
eastern start time on Friday, So stay tuned for details

to talk about Roddy Piper and also the tribute on

(15:45):

Speaker 6 (16:02):
From xavier From, Vallejo, california With Roddy. Piper With Roddy.
Piper i'm a younger fan of only, nineteen SO i
never really had the chance to actually watch, him but
just kind of listening to you, know the THE vip
chats and a lot of the stuff that's you, know
said about. Him it didn't affect me as. Much but,

(16:23):
Like i'm slowly starting to realize how influential he, was you,
know to the whole business in terms of like promos and.
Stuff so you, Know i'm slowly starting to learn more
About Roddy piper and, uh you, know it's, fun you,
know having THE ww network being able to go back
and you know watch some of his stuff and uh but,
Yeah so but real quick. COMMENT i was At raw

(16:44):
last night and the crowd was really.

Speaker 3 (16:47):
Were you with The czarrow? Section?

Speaker 6 (16:50):
Uh, NO i was AT i was at the upper.
Levels BUT i did see the guy handing out the
sign so this is our section outside while we were
all waiting to get. In it was really cool seeing
everybody when he came, out you, know hold up the.
SIGNS i was, like all, right this actually. Worked it
was really. Cool but WHILE i was, there you, Know Seth,
wallins it felt like he didn't have a lot of

(17:11):
like like angry. Heat it felt like everybody was just
really appreciating. Him for you, know how slimmy he, was
and how and how you, know how evil he, was
and you know how slimmy he was. Acting it felt,
like you, know it wasn't a lot of angry heel
heat or, anything but it was more, like you, know
like we really appreciated how how bad he was. Acting

(17:31):
and you, know there were a lot of people laughing
in the. Crowd there are a lot of people you,
know kind of cheering them on and just kind of you,
know playing with, him and.

Speaker 4 (17:38):
It was a really cool.

Speaker 6 (17:38):
Atmosphere BUT i GUESS i have a question when it
comes to The. Divas, uh the two, matches the crowd
really wasn't too into. Them we were, into, like you,
know we're Into, charlotte and we're into you, know the.
Victories we're Into page, winning we're Into charlotte, winning but
we weren't really into the match. Itself AND i feel

(17:59):
like that has something to do with they're not really being.
Stakes what's. Happening we don't know why the factions are really.
Fighting you, know none of them are really kind of
going for The divas. Title they're just kind of you,
know having two matches for no real. Purpose there's not you,
Know SummerSlam build, saying, oh you, know we're fighting for
this honor or we're fighting for this certain. Prize it's

(18:22):
just kind of them having. Matches so when they come,
out you, know they were good, matches but it felt,
like you, know there wasn't purpose to, it and nobody
was really interested because there was really no reason to be.
Interested So i'm, wondering how do you guys feel how
The diva's revolution has, been you, know going on for the, past,
like you, know a month or.

Speaker 1 (18:39):
SO a great topic And, savior thanks for the report
from the. Building, Jim i'm gonna throw to you on this. One,
FIRST i think it's a great. Question what is the divas? Revolution?
Then what do you think about WWE's way of framing
it as some abstract thing that's at stake in these? Matches?

Speaker 3 (18:59):
Right oh. Gosh first of, all there is no divus.
Revels you can call it whenever you want it. Is
it is not a. REVOLUTION i don't know when you,
know when we had The American revolution in this, country
did we need to get permission to do? It did

(19:19):
we need to get the queen's permission to have An american? Revolution,
no we just did, it which which will circle it
back To piper here in a second and seth rawlins
because that's SOMETHING i definitely want to touch. On but
here's the. Deal, well there's a couple of. Things no
one in these in this era OF, wwf nobody really
gets over immediately unless it's a super simple character like

(19:41):
say like a ride back when when he was. Over
anything with any sort of subtlety or complexity like this
is going to take a. While and especially since they
introduced you, know three or four new characters at Once,
sport they've brought back a bunch of people Like tomina
and whomever who might as well the new characters because
they won't featured. Anyway you, know it's how Did? Ronda

(20:06):
it took a while For Ronda browsey to get, over
and thanks To Gina. Carano but you know where we
are right now With ronda is that you know she
Often i'm gonna go buy her next pay per view
because she is going to do something cool or heaven,
forbid she's actually going to, lose But i'm guaranteed to
see some cool arm bar or a knockout or something

(20:26):
often more than, likely And i'm going to buy That,
okay So i've seen the bank, Statement i've seen the figure,
eight which is totally. COOL i don't, know it's just
there's just it's just nothing. Happens it's, like if you
want there to be a, Revolution god bless the, bellas
but they need to. Go god bless all of the

(20:48):
divas who are the. Models let them, manage let them
do pr let them be on total. Divas but if
you really want a, revolution you, know you want something
like the knockout head ON tna or what have. You
they've got to, wrestle they've got to have compelling, storyline
and you need one. Faction WHEN t AND a were,
successful they had what the beautiful. People, okay so you

(21:11):
got the submission, sorority you got the bad and it's
just it's it's all. Confusing IT'S i hate. IT i hate.
It there's no. Revolution they're doing it all. Wrong it's.
Awful and Now i'm angry waves and it's your.

Speaker 1 (21:24):
Fall you're on a runt LIKE i was last week
and the week before and various. Topics, Jim, No i'm with.
YOU I i here's the. Thing if the good part
is that we're seeing, longer better matches and we are
seeing an influx of talent to the, show and so you,
know with three new new women wrestlers who are all,

(21:45):
good they're all really, good so that's a. Plus but
it is this abstract concept that it's a. Revolution BUT
i asked this in my way to online FOR vip
members last night After, raw what is the? REVOLUTION i
don't think they've explained it BECAUSE i don't think they,
can because if they did explain, it their answer would, be,

(22:05):
well we're having two women's matches instead of, one and
the average length is nine minutes or eight minutes instead
of two or three. Minutes that's the. Revolution and we
brought in three women from developmental, who by the, way
had been ready for a while and would have come
up either, way whether whether we're having a revolution or.
Not so the, problem AND i think this goes to
An xavier was saying about the live crowd response is

(22:27):
people don't know why they're cheering who they're rooting. For,
yes we Like charlotte more than we like you, know
pick one of the, heel random, heels you. Know, okay,
yeah so there's, that but The bella's just kind of
they change depending on their opponents and the focus isn't
on the it is not on the, championship it's On,

(22:48):
hey these women just won their. Match does that mean
that they're the queens of the revolution instead of? You
AND i don't think that rests with. PEOPLE i think
they need to get rid of the faction, aspect especially
the three way, aspect and have a singles feud or you,
know one on one feuds where there's someone you have
a reason to cheer for and root. For in somebody
who you have a vested interest in seeing, lose you

(23:08):
will take pleasure in seeing them lose because they're, obnoxious they're,
arrogant they're, liars they're, cheaters whatever it. Is get back
to that more simple. Formula this reminds me what they're
doing with the WAY tna promoted THE X, division which, is, hey,
look we're promoting some a group of wrestlers who normally
don't get a lot of. Attention they're the smaller guys
who do high, Spots so we're going to talk about
them collectively as a, group as opposed to giving them

(23:31):
the type of attention that they would give to the
heavyweights like wwe we know Who Kevin owens is and
what he's. About you, know we know What cesaro stands.
For cesarrow doesn't stand for someone who walks out on
matches when he's about to, lose and he makes fun
Of Kevin owens for. That Kevin owens denies he's a
loser and denies he does that and runs away from
fights because he only fights on his. Terms we have
a reason to Like cesarro and a reason to dislike

(23:54):
and root Against Kevin. Owens they need to do just
keep it that simple with the. Women so to, ME
i said that show me the, revolution don't tell me
that there's a. Revolution that's WHAT i want to. See
so is it a step in the right direction seeing
longer matches and these great women? Added? Yes are we?
AM i Glad stephanie McMahon wasn't mentioned in around to
take credit for it. Yet is it good to talk

(24:15):
about Ron A. Rousey, yes but it's time to focus
on the title and stop thinking that it's just, oh
women fighting women and they're being caddy and. Disagreeable, no
give us a framework where there's a reason to to
cheer for somebody and boot somebody ya you are, Yes,
yes build around Stars and that was one of the

(24:36):
problems with bringing in three women at once is you,
Know Sasha banks And Becky lynch And charlotte got thrown
in there all at, once and they really haven't done a.
LOT i, mean there was a video package On The
boss last, week but other than, that you, know we
haven't seen enough to understand who they are and where
they're coming. From they need to treat, them to say
they would treat any male heavyweight wrestler that they're bringing

(24:57):
in that they believe. In and when they shift that
focus AND i think there a, chance a good chance
it'll happen over, time will be in better. Shape right,
now it's this abstract, revolution and, Yeah i'm With. Xavier
why would people be into? It they're just sort of passively,
watching not knowing what the prize. Is if you're just joining,
us this is THE Pw Live. Cast you can find

(25:19):

You, Toding dante thanks for Calling, to california calls in,
A row thanks for thanks for.

Speaker 7 (26:39):
Joining us good to talk to both Equally Passionate wade
keller and Very Passionate. Jim, VALLEY right I hope i
could just quickly Just offer Condulce's The piper family and
just mention a few things ABOUT what i Remember about
piper in. THE past i actually being out here In
a bay area probably was more of a. National thing

(27:01):
but in nineteen, SEVENTY six i First saw piper ON
THE si, n Network The Spanish, international NETWORK on Wow
The lucha liva Wrestling From, los angeles and, you know
that did kind of get. Out nationally though it was
On a, spanish station IT was. Telecasti internationally I've heard
conan the wrestler referred to Watching. IT miami i have

(27:22):
friends that watched it In. The northeast so, In essence
roddy kind, of was, you know a national player even
far back as. Seventy six the Stuff in spanish was
fantastic because, my GRANDMOTHER who i grew up watching, wrestling
with Predominantly, folks spanish so she really Loved The luca.
Libra show its great for her and great. For me
and she always Referred To roddy piper as, beat bus

(27:44):
Which was spanish for, the pipes because he had the.
Pipes going in, seventy eight he was At The cow
palace a few TIMES and i saw him wrestle a
fantastic match against The Late. Moondog maine and the LAST
time I think i Saw him wressell was in nineteen
ninety seven at The super bowl That The cow. Palace
went He wrestled hogan in that First super bowl that
we had Here In. SAN francisco i had the opportunity

(28:05):
to meet him in two thousand and two at a.
BOOK signing i got there late and got there just
as they were about to close up and, finish UP
so i got a brief moment, with HIM and i
brought up my grandma and, mentioned IT and i told him,
about her and he had a, good LAUGH and, i
said he, hated you and he had Even bigger he was,
a really really, nice MAN and i agree for his family.

Speaker 3 (28:24):
Right now oh, my god those are. Amazing Stories that's
i'm so glad you called it Man that.

Speaker 8 (28:31):
I'm a little long in.

Speaker 7 (28:32):
The Tooth.

Speaker 4 (28:32):
That's, WADE no i.

Speaker 9 (28:33):
Can hear.

Speaker 3 (28:33):
THAT'S tremendous, i mean there's a little bit of there's
a couple of Promos From san francisco on YouTube with Maine,
and piper and, You know main wasn't particularly a, big
guy but He, dwarfs Piper and piper is still this
skinny little kid who hadn't really filled out that. Well
yet and IT'S that's, i mean that's tremendous. Stuff there

(28:56):
and then did you, do, remember like did you see
any of the like my the top ten pipe. Of
moments did you See the lacuca racha or did you
see him ride the media ring on.

Speaker 7 (29:06):
The lacua it was one of the greatest segments ever
and my grandma was fuming. Over it Oh, my god.

Speaker 3 (29:14):
Tell tell the stories that, You saw tell.

Speaker 8 (29:16):
The, STORY yeah i believe.

Speaker 7 (29:18):
He was he was kind of basically what he, was
doing he was trying to sort of Lead, the Latin
the Mexican pronominally, mexican Fans the spanish speaking fans into
the belief that he was going to do something nice
for them and he was going to show them some
respects and blah, blah blah and he was going to learn.
A song i think it was going. To be was
it going to be the? National anthem he was going

(29:39):
to say everything on, the bagpipes but that's what, he
like Wailed Out, la cucaracha and he incurred the anger
of probably just about everybody in person and just about
EVERYBODY on tv that Was of. Mexican descent.

Speaker 10 (29:53):

Speaker 3 (31:01):
Mean we've All seen piper on the national stage kind
of play with the race card, and stuff and, YOU
know i couldn't tell you If If roderick tombs is,
you know what his feelings on. Race is but in
the context, OF wrestling i just thought that that was
the way he was raised in, the business that was
the way the. Business was he was an old, school

(31:22):
GUY and i think sometimes, you know have it to.
Die hard at least that was that was kind of,
my take at least in the. WRESTLING context i can't
tell you what his.

Speaker 7 (31:30):
Personal, BELIEFS yeah i never really wanted to turn this
towards that, rest aside but during, those times to take
somebody's ethnicity and kind of slander it a little bit
within the context of being a villain was a lot
more acceptable at, the time and it's something that probably
wouldn't be accepted obviously wouldn't be. Acceptable today.

Speaker 9 (31:48):
YOU know.

Speaker 3 (31:48):
I was i actually Found A jerry lawler interview on
YouTube yesterday as we're talking, about this and he was
he was cutting a Promo For puerto rico and he
brings Out A puerto rican and, he's, LIKE yeah i
think and this is. The line. I'm not this is,
an old, old joke but this Is what, lawler says,
so please this is just me for. Historical context, he,
GOES yeah I Think puerto ricans, are great and we

(32:10):
all know the line because you can just interchange ethnicity
and say that everybody should, own one, you know and
that's just that's just. The way that's just the way,
it was. You Know and i'm NOT and i don't
sort of lie Down in mexico, where today, you know
not that, long ago They had nazi characters and just

(32:32):
sort of in that context of, professional wrestling, YOU know
i think it was generally understood that, You know, i'm
WIFE but i hated what, he said and you hated what,
he said And the mexicans, and everything and he was
the universal. Bad guy And then piper would the difference
from today Is That piper god has come up and
From From. Chavo.

Speaker 7 (32:53):
Guerrera absolutely that was one thing about, it too is
uh he did and he's he showed heal tendencies just.
So wonderfully he was. Really something another THING that i
always REMEMBER that i had a friend that watched wrestling
with me during. Those times he was pointed out Something
About roddy piper at that time that, was unique and

(33:14):
that was when his opponent would start getting the better
of him with punches and start landing the blows and.
Firing up piper would invariably come back, with shots which
just seemed more realistic to me as opposed to standing
there and taking twelve to fifteen blows in a row
as a villain. Would do at no time he would
actually throw punches back and kind of it just he

(33:37):
added something to the realism of it in. My, opinion.

Speaker 11 (33:41):
Yeah What Roddie.

Speaker 1 (33:42):
Jim jim roddy was great at that in part because
he wasn't this really muscular guy and he was a
main eventor and rose on the national scene IN a
wwf promotion that was built Largely Around, Paul Orndorf hulk hogan,
you know big Wrestlers like andre, just jive, fat wrestlers larger.
Than life roddy was physically he could walk down the

(34:05):
road and not really. Be noticed he wasn't a, small
guy but he wouldn't be noticed as. A wrestler and
yet there was something about him that the way. He
thought and talk, About, it jim and you saw it
in his. Early stages he seemed like he was. Legitimately
tough you would feel safe given the way he got in,
the ring walking down a dark alley, with him despite
the fact that physically he wasn't imposing like some of

(34:26):
the wrestlers he made. Evented, Against well piper.

Speaker 3 (34:30):
Was supposed to be a manager when he first came TO.
The wws, that's right he. WELL twice i mean he
came in seventy nine and they gave him a shot as,
a manager and the other manager sabotaged his bagpipes and.
He flopped and then, you know he was IN the
wwf AND like, i said he was supposed to be,

(34:50):
a manager and he got over and was the main Event.
Of WrestleMania but, i mean you know you saw It in.
California too it's, you know he tried not to leave
his feet he, you know and he would lay it
in at times depending on. The opponent if that's what's
if that's what needed, to happen because for his era
he was sounds ridiculous now because he would be a

(35:11):
giant by, today's standards or very close. To one, you
know he was a. Small guy so that's why he
had to pop himself up literally. And figuratively that's why
he didn't like. To lose that's, you know he was protecting.
His spot and, you know you, can, say oh he
should HAVE put x over that over and you know

(35:31):
the context. Of today but the truth Is is piper
stuck up for himself and.

Speaker 1 (35:36):
He was he.

Speaker 5 (35:37):
Was right he.

Speaker 3 (35:38):
Always Did.

Speaker 1 (35:40):
Absolutely dante anything else.

Speaker 7 (35:41):
For, us well you, Know what I'LL just I don't
i don't know to take this too far and. Too
long but, you know since, YOU'RE mentioning i did not
go to the raw. Last night, ironically ENOUGH though i
am in. THE area i was trying to get a
landed job with those people and they turned, me DOWN
so i ACTUALLY thought i might be working. Last NIGHT
but i just think that they've completely ruined The women's what,

(36:01):
the PLAN what i think could have been planned out
better for. THE women i basically outlined or brought out
what would have been about a six to eight month
scenario that would have slowly brought these women UP from
nxt one, by one and it would have culminated With
A divas championship Match at WrestleMania Between Champion sasha Banks

(36:23):
with stephanie McMahon in her Corner Versus becky Lynch With
ronda rousey in. Her CORNER and i just think they've
completely blown the. WHOLE thing, i mean in one, two
weeks they completely blew that out of. The Water and
i'm really disappointed in the. McMahon family their egos have
allowed them to literally throw away millions and millions of

(36:45):
dollars in. Great business, they're Impatient and i'm ALSO a,
ww SHAREHOLDER sol i have a somewhat of mistake.

Speaker 1 (36:53):
In That, thanks dante thank you for the call and
for your point of view on. THE women I think
JIM and i have definitely our pov on on. THAT
situation i do need to take a moment to mention
a couple sponsors of. The program one of them IS.
Direct tv they are Back in august as a sponsor
OF The pw torch, live cast and this deal. Is

(37:16):
fantastic listen to this nineteen NINETY nine a month gets
you a three letters of the word education to help
YOU remember pw torch dot com slash e. D you
back to our conversation about Last Night's Monday night raw
and the career of The Late. Rap piper it still
feels strange saying that my co host today Substituting For

(37:39):
jason Powell from Progressling dot Net Is, jim VALLEY A
pw torch contributor and a former host Of The total chaos.
Radio show back to the phone lines. We go let's
go Next to eric code two five, to, one two five,
to one thanks For holding please state game and where you're?
Calling from, going once, Going.

Speaker 12 (38:03):
Twice Brian, FROM sorry i have a new PHONE and
i was holding it. Upside down, that's awesome what kind.

Speaker 1 (38:11):
Of fun It's.

Speaker 12 (38:12):
A samsung galaxy and they have the headphone jack on the. Other, side,
now son.

Speaker 1 (38:18):
Yeah at six.

Speaker 8 (38:22):
The sixth is.

Speaker 12 (38:25):
Uh, no no but it's the it was the web
exclusive shiny. And gold, So anyway i'm A cent i.

Speaker 1 (38:32):
Got it mike g s FIVE so I was i'm
a little bit of a techno guy when it comes.
To phone it's always cool to see what people. Are,
using anyway go ahead back.

Speaker 12 (38:39):
To wrestling, YOU KNOW i, really loved uh Always Watching.
Roddy Piper his the first WRESTLING biography i ever read,
Was his and, YOU know i hate not talking too much,
about HIM and i think the rest of the the

(38:59):
callers will have more to say OTHER than i loved
everything the guy did on the. NATIONAL stage i want
to ask, and say bring it up. A lot is
there any good in the WWE's sake for them even
Bringing Up ronda, RALSEI anything i mean other than ADVERTISING
a mma fight that'll Get To texas stadium before they Do.

Speaker 1 (39:21):
For, WrestleMania jim i think That's. A brian that's a. Great,
question thanks thanks for calling and. Asking it it is
SOMETHING that i raised my eyebrows when they, mentioned her,
you know two three times last night during two different
segments of. The program obviously everybody knows who she, Is
now there's no. Denying it she's more, Popular, now jim
on the national scene than she was even back At

(39:43):
wrestle may, thirty one just a few. Months ago the
fight got. COVERAGE, everywhere espn which has no STAKE in,
usc success covers, them extensively even though They're a. Fox
property in TERMS of tv, rights fees, she's huge and
so to not, mention, her well it, seems, like well
you're not really in touch with pop culture and they're
trying to glom on to her reputation with the current.

(40:05):
Women wrestlers, that said there is, that counterpoint which is
they're helping their audience have a higher name Recognition For.
Rona ralsey there Are people jim who listen to this
show who DON'T. Follow ufc they Might hear rod his name,
in passing but they, just, figure well it's one OF
those mma FIGHTERS and i don't care. About HIM when
wwe starts bringing, HER up i think it would help.
UFC's business but the thing is she only fights what

(40:27):
two three times, a year probably, maybe four and at
most if she has some easy fights and they can
schedule a lot. Of opponents it's not like she competes
With Every monday night or on with in terms of a.
Network SUBSCRIPTION so i have mixed feelings. About IT mostly
i would vote, for It, But jim i'm curious. Your
opinion should they be. Mentioning her of.

Speaker 3 (40:45):
Course, they should because they've got to still probably BUTTER,
up ufc and because you Know the vince still wants
one the for a pay per view, of course, you
know To fight stephanie or do it Tag with rock
or whatever. It is, so yeah, of course You. Know
vince this is Part of vince's m oda to put
the pressure on yes, YOU NO I i i think

(41:08):
it makes perfect same as, you know as far as.
She goes it's. Really funny i've got, a brother older
brother who used TO, follow mma and he's been busy with,
the job so he hasn't been uh that takes some
groub around, the country so he hasn't. Followed much and
he was asking me. About it, he, goes, so uh
WHO should i be WATCHING? An MMA and i, was,
like oh you probably should Be Watching. Ronda rousey she's

(41:30):
like the. Biggest thing and he was like he up
to how long it's been since He's watched he goes what,
He goes dana wouldn't want a woman and IN, the
ufc and he was he was just giving me all
of the lines that Remember That dana white used to
talk about no one wants to see. Women fight dana

(41:51):
would never, do it, you know all of, the stereotyped
all the lines that it was really it. Was hilarious
AND then i had to try to get him up
to feet. On, that obviously we sure need to Have
a connor, McGregor CONVERSATION but I think I think i
blew his mind enough for one one.

Speaker 1 (42:07):
Phone call that is that. Is, fantastic jim what did
you Think Of dana white replying to somebody complaining about
the price OF the usc pay per View on twitter
by telling what the Person on, twitter said you should
have a NETWORK like WWE so i can get these
shows for nine to. A nine you're pricing me out of.
The Market and dana replied it should be. That cheap.

(42:28):
It's fake what did you think? Of, that uh that
approach from a pr Standpoint of dana kind of, you
know lashing out or kind of nats you're greacting to
somebody saying your pay per views are too pricey, BY
insulting i know. YOU'RE insulting i guess a lot of
people with that.

Speaker 3 (42:43):
TERM fake i just thought That was Dana, being dana,
you know for all of the creedy, you know he
always says something outrageous every now, and then and that
just toshemed to be about the right time to, you
know check. Your clock, oh, yeah, okay yeah it's about
Time for ganna to say. Something weird it's going to
get a couple of. People UPSET so. I didn't i didn't,
get OFFENDED and i think anybody else who got offended

(43:06):
needs to look who's Talking about and of course he's gonna.
Say that and the truth is that something that no one.
Will admit ON the, Wwf SIDE if wwf could get
consistent numbers on pay per view THE way, ufc does
we would not either have one a ww network or

(43:29):
we wouldn't or the pay per views would be either
not on the network or there'd only be LIKE the
b shows on. The network it'd be structured. Completely Different
so data is making a ton. Of money sorry whoever,
Tweeted data but go to a bar, or something because
it's not going.

Speaker 1 (43:47):
To, Change YEAH and, i mean, YOU know i don't
spend five minutes talking about the, fake issue but, You
know taz spoke out, against it Replied to dana talking
about the wear and tear in. His body you know
it's not it is. Not fake what we go through
even if it is, pre DETERMINED and i think, that's fair,
you know to defend your industry and your sport if you're,

(44:11):
a wrestler that you would take exception with the. WORD
fake i don't like the TERM fake www and really
wrestling in general almost to. A fault it doesn't presuppose
that wrestling is. Real anymore even within their, own shows
they're inconsistent. In that so it's a little Outdated on.
Data's Part, but jim you are one hundred. Percent Right
it's Dana. Being daana nobody should be offended. By it
and the, fact Is If I'm, DANA white i do

(44:32):
want to define why we charge sixty five DOLLARS for
usc COMPARED to ww charging only Ten. For WrestleMania he
kind of, wants to, you know RALLY the usc fans
around the idea that you pay a premium price because you're,
Getting it you're you're getting something. THAT'S real i want to.
Note this this Is Something brian fritz a friend OF
P w torch and a Guest ON. Peter D torch.

(44:53):
Live cast he's contributed to The Ass all stars feature
that we used to RUN On Pw torch dot com
which we should. Bring back we should bring that back,
this fall? Shouldn't, WE jim i didn't know.

Speaker 3 (45:01):
IT was i. WAS wondering i wasn't getting. EMAILS anymore
i thought maybe he just took me off. The, list,
NO no i must have done a. BAD job i
don't get the. Emails, anymore no you.

Speaker 1 (45:11):
Did great you were as active. AS anybody i just
just ran out a team on fitting that end of
my schedule with a lot of OTHER things i had.
Going on but be a good thing to bring back. This fault,
but nevertheless, you know we're talking about the. Fake Issue and, taz,
said hey my body's all. Beat Up jerry lynn also
a FRIEND Of pw torch'. Live cast SOMEBODY who i
watched wrestle in the late eighties as he came up
through the Ranks, In Minneapolis saint Paul With. Sean waltman

(45:33):
he retired. LAST year i was at his. RETIREMENT show
i think it was. Last year was it two? Years
ago man time sometimes as, a BLUR but i think
it was. Last year and he was on, this show
a great guest on, the show talking about his career
and his transition away from taking. Indie bookings and working
wrestling really, nice guy had just some great matches that

(45:56):
really stood out on the indie scene in the, late
eighties ended up being one OF the i think one
of the, most easily, without question the best unheralded full.
Time worker he's the best wrestler that a lot of
wrestling fans who think they know wrestling have never. Heard of,
and granted people listening to this show who LIVED through
ecw are students of the game know who. He is

(46:17):
but his body of work the last twenty five years
is on par with just. About anybody's the range, of
opponents the, great matches the places that. He wrestled he
didn't have the attendance figures to back up those matches
because he was more of a wrestler who journeyed from
one territory to ANOTHER headline dcw had. GREAT matches i

(46:37):
am a huge fan of HIS and i HAVE said
i think you can put his body of work in
the ring the last twenty five years up against anybody's
and he's that good that he deserves to be in
a conversation with all the, all time all the greats
of the last twenty. Five years with, that said he's hurting.
Right now he's had some serious physical issues and doesn't

(46:58):
have the medical insurance to. Cover It And brian fritz
started a GoFundMe CAMPAIGN and i want to publicize. It
here their goal is to reach fifteen. Thousand dollars as of,
this morning after just, one day they were up to
over seven. Thousand dollars there is a ton of Support For,
jerry lynn but sometimes there can be an initial urge
and then it kind of goes away and, people, think
well everyone else is taken care. OF it i want

(47:19):
to make sure that, doesn't happen or at least do
my part to. Publicize it they're looking for DONATIONS and
i was looking on the. GoFundMe website there are people
giving five. Dollars donations there are people giving one hundred.
Dollars donations but they're writing Notes. To JERRY and I,
know JERRY and i know what this means. To him
he was somebody who gave his body and gave of

(47:40):
himself to age fifty in this industry and gave world.
CLASS matches i Never saw jerry phone. It in he
loved what he did and he gave his all. To
it AND when i say he gave his all, he gave,
his body his health up. For it he's noveling with
a need for next surgery and some other, health issues
but mostly an upcoming next surgery with some fusion on

(48:02):
a spinal cord that he needs and severe backpain that he's.
Going through he is somebody who gave a lot but
didn't give didn't, relatively speaking didn't get a lot back
in terms of big paydays and big, income years and
so he's looking for some help. Right now so if
you were a Fan Of jerry lynn and appreciated what,
he did you can go to go fundme dot com
Slash Help. Jerry lynn that's GoFundMe dot com Slash Help,

(48:26):
jerry lynn and contribute just five dollars if that's all,
you got and you can leave a NOTE and I
guarantee jerry's, reading THEM and i guarantee you he's. Appreating
it if you can forward more ten twenty fifty one,
hundred bucks go. For it it's GoFundMe dot com Slash Help.
Jerry lynn that we don't have universal health care in.
This country there is not a union, For wrestlers there
isn't a fund for this kind. Of, thing sadly but

(48:49):
thankfully we have People Like brian fritz who are setting
up go fund me accounts and using his Networking through
Between the ropes, dot com, his website his podcast, web
site and. His network brian is a great guy and
absolutely is a great person To represent jerry on this.
Cause already wrestlers who have contributed to the Fund Include,
mick Foley, Lead To, Austin, Airy Cmpunk Daniel, Bryan Bully,

(49:13):
Ray Taz, Chris, Daniel chanty Kazari And, Adam Cole, Steve Caarino,
Kevin Kelly TOMMY, dreamer mvp and Of Course SEAN waltman
xpoc who went up through the indie ranks Here in Minnesota.
With jerry so if you can donate, some money it
looks like actually they're up to nine thousand dollars as of,
this morning revising that number from seven and they had
three hundred nineteen donations four nine, Thousand dollars so, Some,

talk about great workers who gave a lot of their
bodies and were. Not, fake yes they're all comes are,
pretty determined but what they gave up physically was. Not
Fake jerry lynn is, among them and he's a real.
CLASS act i can absolutely endorse him being somebody who

(50:35):
would be worth this in essence charitable cause to help
him out of a. Bad, situation well and.

Speaker 3 (50:42):
Also you know that, You know i'm not going to,
say that He, SAID jerry i don't know him well
enough to, say that but, you know some of the
wrestlers that might ask for money or honestly have asked,
for money you know that a great deal of their
money freaking win up their nose or some other place
or some other to a lot of things that they
shouldn't have, been doing, and they, you know could have

(51:03):
tried harder to get a. Grip ball the other thing
with gofundmes is you Know that, jerry's honest and you
know that that money is going to get spent for what.
It's meant it's not going to be that there's That
Fricking john cena book that got donated that nobody we've,
never seen or that that wrestling show that never. Happened either,
you know you know that the money is going that

(51:25):
it's going to be used for what. You say and
you also know that the Injuries that jerry incurred were
not due to lifestyle choices but due to. Occupational hazard

Donate to it, absolutely Is And BRIAN fritz i can

not something that might or, might happen might or might.
Not happen he's going to have these hospital bills based
on having surgery in. Two days he needs to. Have

he has bills for, his family his wife and his,
young daughter and he'll be out of work two to.
Three months that's why they're Asking for their goal is fifteen. Thousand,

a recent one FROM a vip member here who let
me know he'd. Be calling This IS jeremy S, calling

(53:48):
jeremy let us know where you're calling from and go
ahead with. Your story you're On With way Keller And. Jim,
vallely hey.

Speaker 11 (53:54):
Thanks guys This is Jeremy, From.

Speaker 1 (53:55):
Detroit, michigan jeremy Thanks. For, colin yeah what have you got?

Speaker 13 (53:58):
For?

Speaker 11 (53:58):
Us, HEY so I actually i wanted to say thanks
for all that you Do because i'm ALL, in vip first,
time caller but, You know i'm watching. On periscope i'm
listening to all the flashbacks.

Speaker 1 (54:10):
So excellent. It's.

Speaker 11 (54:15):
Cool yeah, in fact wrestling's kind of introduced me to
it now that's, You know i'm utilizing It and i'm
utilizing it in my line of work and it's it's
a cool app. All RIGHT so i HOPE that i
have like ninety seconds here just to get. This story
this is A recent this is a recent story with
with With. Mister piper so let me start by STATING
that i started. Watching wrestling just put a timeline around

(54:36):
THIS around, wrestlingia One and i've been hooked, ever since
and it all began With. Mister PIPER so i have
a brother who's ten years. My Senior roddy piper was
his favorite wrestler and that was my first exposure. To
wrestling so as wrestling Grew And piper star grew throughout,
the eighties even my mother fell in love, with him
so that that plays a part into. This story fast
Forward to may sixteenth of, this year so just two

(54:58):
months ago In suburban detroit For The Motor City, comic
Convention mister piper was one of the guests and you
could get your picture taken, with him or an autograph or.
A combination this was my first opportunity to actually. Meet
him so when it was my turn in line to speak,
with him we exchanged PLEASANTRIES and i mentioned that my
mother told Me that i'd better go. Meet him she
saw him in the NEWSPAPER and i have to take

(55:19):
a picture. For her so, without hesitation, he said call,
your mom.

Speaker 14 (55:24):
And it was loud.

Speaker 11 (55:24):
IN there i didn't really, hear him and maybe it
was a kind of a combination of me not believing
that he could have, said that and then, he, Said no,
i'm serious get your mother on. The PHONE so i
don't know if this is something that he has done
from time to time with his fans at these types,
of events but he spoke to my mom for a
little more than. Five minutes she happened to be in
the car with my father at, the time with nieces,
and nephews and they were all listening to this, through

(55:46):
bluetooth talking like we were all members of his, extended
family and he told her that it was the least he.
Could DO after i asked to take a picture with
him to give to her because his son meant the
world to him and nothing is more important, than family
said that he needed all the prayers he could get
if he wanted to spend as much time with his
family as he would like to at this point in.
His life one highlight was when my, mother said is

(56:09):
this for real or? A joke and my mom's Name.
Is teresa, He, said teresa there are so many people
out there that Think that i'm, a JOKE but i
assure you that this is.

Speaker 1 (56:19):
Really. Hot wrap.

Speaker 4 (56:22):
It was this.

Speaker 11 (56:22):
Experience that really. Touched me it. Was awesome my mom,
was ecstatic and the fact that he took his time
out and walked away from his table to concentrate on
this phone call was wonderful and SOMETHING THAT i i will.
Never FORGET so i wanted to share that story with
you and your audience and remembering one of the great
ones gone.

Speaker 1 (56:38):
Too, Soon jeremy i'm so glad. You did that's a.
Great story thank you. So much THANKS for vitam, Membership too.

Speaker 4 (56:44):
Thank you thanks.

Speaker 1 (56:45):
For everything Take, care yea and thanks for watching me
on my treadmill desk While. Watching raw that was one of. My,
periscopes jim what do you think of? That Story and
i'll compound my question also with what was from Your
Experience roddy piper like outside of the ring relative to.
Other wrestlers have you heard stories like That about roddy?
A lot, did he, like everybody have certain moods or

(57:05):
was he somebody who just went above? And beyond and
you heard stories Like that when it came to fans
and his interaction, with, THEM.

Speaker 3 (57:11):
Well I think i, think that, you know he was
always very protective of. His family one of the one of,
the Shows The total kaos SHOWS that i sent to
you that people will Here on Thursday. With roddy, YOU
know i asked him a, question about, you know how
long he's Been in portland and just that he's And
what i'm trying to get across, is that, you know
how Imbedded Is roddy piper is In the, portland community

(57:36):
and he THOUGHT that i was he misunderstood me, or
something and he kind of gently says, something about, You
know i'm a little sensitive about my FAMILY or i
forgot exactly how he, phrased it but, you know that's
just kind of the way. He was he was very,
you know he was, you know in my interaction, with
him he talked a lot about. His family, you know
one of his goals was to, you know leave his

(58:01):
kids each with a with a with a large sum.
OF money i don't know if he ever achieved that.
Or not wouldn't surprise me if, he did but, you
know that was one of, his goals to make, sure that,
you know he provided, for them. You know and as
far as meeting him, in person, you know he was always,
the same whether he knew you were NOT that. I saw, i,

(58:22):
mean certainly, you know he. Wasn't perfect he got frustrated.
With people there were times when, you KNOW like i
remember one time we were in a studio and we
were we were doing commentary for, a show a pay,
per view a planned pay per view show that, never
happened and he got a little upset with the producer and,
you know it was kind of muttering to me, about

(58:43):
it but, you know by, and large, you know he was,
always polite, you know always made, eye contact, you know,
shook hands you know, very much, asked questions and was always.
Very engaged, you know called, you know if he met you,
in person he'd more than likely if you're, a person if,
your male he'd call. You sir and you know he,
was always, you know polite to.

Speaker 5 (59:03):
A fault.

Speaker 1 (59:06):
Very, Good yeah so it's good to hear stories about
people that you follow as, a fan and you, you
know it's not about what they're what goes on in their,
private life that is, anybody's business but when it comes
to their public interaction with fans or how they treat
the server at, the restaurant the, flight attendant the radio,
show producer, you know all of that is. A window

(59:26):
and no one situation should already find somebody good. Or
bad but when you start hearing anecdote after Anecdote that
piper take time to interact with fans and digital appreciation
for their appreciation for, his talents that it does help
make you feel better about watching his matches and supporting
him over. The Years, AND rod I mean roddy's talent, was,

(59:48):
Amazing obviously jim in, recent years, you know because in
two thousand and one he sounded he was a good
interview subject and really, you know coherent and could keep
a train of thought to a. Certain degree you can
speak be more on that having conducted. The interviews but in,
recent years more, recent years whether it WAS a tna
promos in the mid two thousands that he did, or

(01:00:08):
gosh that that appearance he did Talk about hulkogan last
week on that sports. Talk show roddy could be all
over the place and it was like a super bawl
bouncing around inside. A bathroom. You know you just there
would be a topic and then mid sentence he had
divert into. Something else he'd branch off into. Something else
he'd laugh at his own bad joke and look embarrassed
and then try, to recover and then he would talk
some more and next thing, you know, the host the

(01:00:30):
host is just looking at his producer going what's going?
On here what did? You study was different in terms
of his ability to kind of tell an entertaining story
and stay on track in, recent years did that jump
out to you and did that even? Concern you a.
Little bit oh of course.

Speaker 3 (01:00:46):
It, concerned me and it also, you know made me
sad because, YOU know i knew that his legacy was
very important, to him his his, you know he'd often
refer to IT when i was around him as a
had his, real estate, you know the whole paper persona
whether you're talking, you know in in in the, wrestling
world inside the, wrestling ring during a during a fight

(01:01:09):
to use, his vernacular or And in hollywood or as a,
you know a celebrity outside. Of that those things were,
very important.

Speaker 4 (01:01:17):
And, you know it.

Speaker 3 (01:01:19):
Killed ME but I mean i think it had been
coming for a. LONG time i mean it's not like,
you know his, you know when W c w, was
dying he had some crazy ideas to pick fat when
you know he Did the WrestleMania six Thing With Bad
news brown where he came out with half his. BODY painted,

(01:01:39):
i mean THAT was i, would say very Ill. Advised
nitro when he was gonna he was he brought out
all of those unknowns to fight with him at that pay,
per view and it was so poorly received that they
had to Put The four horsemen in the next week
to kind of cover up for, that thing because it failed.

(01:02:00):
SO badly, i Mean Was ronnie piper a genius and
absolutely he was. A genius but, YOU know i certainly
have had my. Bad ideas you've had your, bad ideas
And definitely pipers has. Had his and you know some are, probably,
gotten honestly and some are probably from, you know wear

(01:02:21):
and tear on the on the body through. EXTRACURRICULAR activities,
i mean that's, no secret.

Speaker 1 (01:02:27):
No no we talked a lot about that On The
versus mitchelladio. Show too, you know he put his body
through a lot physically, and mentally and it did take.
A toll, but man when he was on and when he,
was good it. WAS amazing i thought the tribute video
they did to him last Night On raw jim was.
REALLY nice I thought i loved the vintage photos that
showed him at all these different ages and, big moments

(01:02:48):
and they got, across that, you know he was a
crossover celebrity and and he's one of those WRESTLERS who
i don't know that there's ten wrestlers WHO could i
don't think there's a list of ten wrestles who could
die who would get the level of publicity in twenty
Fifteen That roddy piper's DEATH did i mean People Knew Rowdy,
roddy piper whether It Was ronda rousey paying tribute to

(01:03:10):
him after Her Victory saturday NIGHT, at usc or whether
It Was Madison square garden putting up his name and
picture and a tribute to him on, their billboard or
whether it was all just the random. TALK shows, i
mean THERE are am talk radio stations that aren't dedicated
to sports who were doing segments with guests talking about
the Legacy Of. RODDY piper, i, mean again i'd, Probably

(01:03:33):
overstate i'm not for Stating and i'm probably understating that
there's probably not ten other wrestlers who are a bigger
deal if they were to Die Than. Roddy, piper certainly,
YOU know i mean not to, be morbid but, You Know,
steve austin The Rock. Hulk hogan, you know there's certain
wrestlers who come to mind who would be in that,
same category but.

Speaker 15 (01:03:50):
Not many in, TWENTY twelve nxt transitioned into the developmental
system and ultimately the brand you. See today On THE
torch VIP podcast nxt eight, years back we'll be taking

years back to the day to track NXT's rising talents
and why they did or didn't. Work out EXCLUSIVELY For
PW torch, vip members.

Speaker 3 (01:04:27):
It's a pretty. Short, LIST well, i mean you could,
EVEN say, I Mean dusty rhodes dying was a, big
deal but really it was a big deal primarily inside
the world, of Wrestling where piper transcended That.

Speaker 1 (01:04:40):
DUST also i WILL say i was surprised at to
a degree at how much People Knew. DUSTY roads i,
would say especially In, the southeast it was a. Big Deal,
But roddy, You're right dusty's death was a bigger DEAL
than i expected it would be outside. Of wrestling but,
that said, You're right roddy. WAS national, i mean like
even p people who don't know pro Wrestling Know, roddy

(01:05:02):
piper and you can't say That About dusty rhodes, for
sure and or very. Many.

Speaker 3 (01:05:06):
Others, right well and you Know vern gania probably at
one point due to his, you know when he Was
The United states champion ON the tv Out. Of chicago,
you know he probably was His biggest piper at, one
POINT but i mean that was that was, a, long,
long long long, time ago and, that's why, YOU know,
I mean vern definitely got a lot, of coverage but,

(01:05:27):
You know piper died at a at a, younger age
much closer to his to, his peak when when most
of his fan base was. Still alive. You know the
thing is you have to understand, is that, you know
when it comes to, major stars, YOU know i would
Argue that piper did it vastly on. His own, you

(01:05:49):
know he went out and got the Deal With. John carpenter,
you know he wasn't IN the wwf where He Made.
They live he left AND he i mean he got
that deal on. His own All of hogan's movies were,
you know and initially we're Through visbit man's. Production company,
You know, rock initially, you know got the big PUSH
when wwf. Was huge, YOU know, I mean piper did,

(01:06:11):
everything himself and because he was the, bad guy, you
know he didn't, you know sure he had the machine
and he has the dolls, and things but not Compared,
to hogan not Compared, to austin not Compared. To rock
the way the machine got. Behind them piper did a
lot of that stuff on, his own Much Like.

Speaker 1 (01:06:29):
Terry, funk oh, absolutely no We'll. Put jim we're gonna
take a couple. More calls i've got about ten minutes
or so LEFT before i have a hard deadline for a.
Dinner TONIGHT but i do want to note and these are.

Going on for, The audible so thanks.

Speaker 16 (01:07:26):
For that findment.

Speaker 13 (01:07:27):
About.

Speaker 16 (01:07:28):
That uh my, COMMENT was i maybe it's because what
you just said with the CROSSOVER, WITH ti i didn't
see that much stuff ON that I thought i would,
See today like, for example on, THE network i just
saw was ready to kind of. GET in, I know
i can go through stuff on my own and try

(01:07:48):
and dig and, find STUFF but i really thought they
would have something in. The lineup they barely even Have
The legend house to hear there. IN view I thought
i got to really see a different side Of mister
piper On The, legend house which. Was nice but my
question more, so was and my apologies that you've, already

(01:08:09):
discussed had got on that.

Speaker 13 (01:08:11):
Long ago.

Speaker 9 (01:08:13):
What do you think it was that Where mister piper
never uh do you think he.

Speaker 16 (01:08:20):
Never had the interest in going as far as wanting.

Speaker 8 (01:08:24):
To hold a.

Speaker 9 (01:08:26):
Major not, major title but Like The world heavyweight title
and rather it WAS W c w or, you know
he came in that a, little LATER but wwe at
the time when he was, you know uh red Hot
around mania the earlier part Of.

Speaker 5 (01:08:42):
The, manias.

Speaker 1 (01:08:44):
Yeah, Good question Jim. GO no i.

Speaker 9 (01:08:49):
Was just, gonna say or is that just didn't fall
in with the character that he had gotch.

Speaker 1 (01:08:54):
You, know yeah go ahead and talk, about that because
a lot, of people a lot of people.

Speaker 5 (01:08:57):
Wonder, that sure if you were To ask roddy why
he was never, overworld champion he would tell you he didn't,
need it and that, is true he didn't, Need IT.

Speaker 3 (01:09:09):
But i would, say that, You know piper was very much,
a maverick, you know in nineteen, eighty FIVE and i
believe It was may of nineteen, eighty five so we're
talking just a couple of Months. After WrestleMania, you know
the the and other WrestleManias may have made, more money.

Speaker 5 (01:09:29):
But there Was.

Speaker 3 (01:09:30):
No WrestleMania since that has been a part of the
pop culture and part of the mainstream the way That
first WrestleMania was and that's every freaking one, of. Them seriously,
but Anyway and piper was literally a. Household name He
was america's bad guy for that summer of. Eighty five
but in eighty five he Came, To portland oregon and

(01:09:52):
wrestled ON an nwa card For Promoter don owen because
He Was. Ronnie PIPER and i guess THE reason i
bring that up was to, show that, You know piper
did what he wanted, to do and that was pretty.
Much it he was a guy that couldn't, be controlled
and particularly in, that era, you know you were not

(01:10:16):
going to put a world title on a guy that you.
Couldn't trust, You know piper also had issues of, you know,
You Know ole anderson fired Him in georgia a few
Times because piper had outside issues that that caused him.
To misdate, you know he had some reliably reliability issues in.

(01:10:39):
The PAST but i would say probably more than anything,
was that, YOU know i don't know if the word
control is the. Right word that sounds maybe a little,
too SINISTER but i would say that the number one
Reason that piper was never a world champion was the
fact that, you know you didn't know what you, would literally,

(01:11:01):
you know he may tell he may decide that he
wants to, go home and, by god he's gonna. Go home, you,
know today it's not that big. A deal, you know
when a world champion leaves or quits or get injured,
or whatever it's like they just. Move on but back
then it would have been.

Speaker 5 (01:11:17):
A huge.

Speaker 3 (01:11:19):
Huge deal, SO no I think i think that's. The reason,
AND also i mean they were in The, Whole Cogan
business Batch. And hull hogan wasn't going to lose, the
title and the same thing with W. C w i
think even if they thought about putting the Title, ON
piper i don't know if they did, or Not, but piper, you,
know uh, You know piper was already. MAKING money i

(01:11:40):
don't know if he would have done the schedule back.
THEN either i will say this in the interview that
we're going to Run on thursday On the torch where
he Starts Ribbing rick flair on my show and, he's like,
you know you've got thirteen world titles or however many
they say at, the time because it was two thousand, and.

Speaker 5 (01:11:58):
One and, he goes you could give me just one?

Speaker 4 (01:12:01):
Of them you couldn't Give me just.

Speaker 3 (01:12:05):
So, you know there's probably know in, Their BUDDIES so
i don't know if they're just kind of ribbing each
other or maybe there's awesome time that we all know
there's some truth. To humor so you can listen to That.
On thursday the side, for Yourself Whether ronnie piper truly
did want to be a recognized major world heavyweight.

Speaker 1 (01:12:24):
Campus no you cover a lot of reasons why a
he didn't, need it and b promoters probably weren't super
eager to do it to give him, the title but
at the same time he could. Have worked there was
part of him that said he didn't need it because
he knew the reasons it, didn't happen but maybe part
of him wishes it. Did, Not everybody jim and you.
Know This bruce mitchell talks about this. A lot the

(01:12:46):
world titles weren't passed around to every main eventor back
in the seventies and eighties until really kind Of The
Monday night. War era it was a small group who
got a run with the. World TITLE now i think
fans sort, of, think well if you're a big star
and you, draw money you have to have the. World
title and the world title is kind of meant for
specific types, of wrestlers and not every megasuccessful draw needs

(01:13:08):
to be validated with the world. Title run we're short,
on TIME but i do want to take a couple,

Speaker 1 (01:15:24):
Thanks brian Somebody on twitter had mentioned that they'd like
TO see wwe just put a chronological complete For every
piper's pit up on the. Up ram don't put a
special don't do, special commentary you don't have to do.
Wrap rounds just open it up with The first piper's
pit and let people who live that on a week
by week basis relive all of them. Straight through on

(01:15:47):
the ORIGINAL Syndicated wws Superstars of, WRESTLING era, i mean
you marked down the time of day that pipe's going to.
Be up it was, mid show and it would, come
on and you knew that was the highlight of the
show most weeks during that really hot run A. Cidicated,
tv jim do you have any off the radar or,
you know less less popular ones that are worth people?

Speaker 3 (01:16:06):
Looking for, YOU know i saw one the other Day
that i've never. Seen before there's one from like an
eighty five, uh uh W W f superstars, or Whatever
and piper is interviewing this, is crazy but he is

(01:16:28):
interviewing what You call he's interviewing the the vice president
of the W, W F, jack tunney.

Speaker 1 (01:16:41):
And that's that's.

Speaker 4 (01:16:41):
So fun he's not, the president he's the.

Speaker 5 (01:16:44):
Vice.

Speaker 3 (01:16:44):
President piper they don't do anything, of note but it's
just it Must Be jack tunney's first appearance or television
ON the, wwf network YOU know, tv network, you Know,
on superstars the syndicated network, back then because, you know
he's not even the president then he's the vice president
of the Ww haven't piper's? Asking him, you know why

(01:17:05):
He protects Hogan and piper's asking and why he doesn't
get world. Title Shots and tonny just talks about how
much he loves wrestling. And EVERYTHING like, i said there's
nothing news worry about it other than it's. It's bizarre
it's really bizarre because they talk about how much they
love wrestling and all. These things in the starre there's

(01:17:26):
also ONE that I think i haven't seen it for a,
long time that there's One With greg Valentine Where, greg
valentine as we, both know with Feuding With roddy piper
in nineteen. Eighty three so it's just like a hear
earlier with that chain Match and Piper and Flair or
Piper and valentine are so Committed To kate sabe and protecting,
you know wrestling reality That when valentine shows up on,

(01:17:50):
the pit they're sort of giving each other the stink
eye a, little bit and then they decide that they
like each. Other again and. That's fascinating that.

Speaker 1 (01:18:00):
Is tremendous let's let's go to four seven eight up
next for. Seven eight please to get your name and
where you're calling from the Real.

Speaker 8 (01:18:06):
From Georgia, hey doro what do you got?

Speaker 1 (01:18:09):
For us try to be quick because we're up against.

Speaker 8 (01:18:10):
The, Clock okay i'm going to. BE quick i understand
you know, off Pizza, Rightet PIPE but i want to
know do you think it could be any other Types
of piper likes raftlers today in this type of rattling,
Industry today how he was so how can you say

(01:18:31):
how he cared about how he looked to the public with?
His character do you think it could be in the
castle's light that today in THE w w were impossible
for A ridet piper to be in.

Speaker 1 (01:18:42):
Today's, WORLD yeah i know WHAT you're i know what
you're Getting At. Gerrell jim you know people, Talk, About
Oh dean ambrose has a little bit of that. In
him piper was one of. A kind there's never gonna
be another Writ. Of piper there's never going to Be
another Stone Called. Steve austin there's never going to be
a whole trying to copy and Be Another. Roddy piper but,
that said there were certain traits That Made roddy, piper

(01:19:04):
great but you can't assign them. To somebody you have
to be. That person and THERE'S no, i mean it's
such a cliche to, say it but there was nobody
else in wrestling before or after him who Was Like.
Roddy piper, so yes there can be people who get
by with, great wit, fast wit uh. Street toughness, you know.

(01:19:24):
They're there there got an edge, to them but. They're
funny all that can. Happen Again but I'm really i've
never seen anybody like Approach Being roddy piper in the
Way that Roddy. Was, roddy no not.

Speaker 3 (01:19:36):
At all piper was. An outlaw piper was one of the,
you know he might be the Last outwal you can
have SOMEONE on Tv Like dean ambrose or whomever portray,
an outlaw but the reality is that it's still in,
the confines the approved confines OF. The wwe so So anytime

(01:19:56):
amber says something crazy he still get a stance. Of
approval roddy did a lot of things he wasn't supposed
to do or supposed, to say and that's what makes.
Him different so the answer to his question, is no could, someone,
simulated perhaps but as far as as far as in
the in a, real, sense no.

Speaker 1 (01:20:17):
Absolutely not, AND really wwe is not an environment that
would Allow A roddy piper to. Even exist, you know
he would be weeded out and and and beaten down
and and he would be uh formed into the. W
systems is He's Not, roddy Piper im but, to me
he's the closest we have to somebody who. Has credibility

(01:20:41):
he doesn't have the typical. Body type you are on
the your you're when he's on the, screen talking you
want to listen to what he has. To say there
is compl believability to. His character there are things you,
don't expect like him talking about his family and his
son and that bitterness that his son Is A john
cena fan and all. OF that, i mean there's there's
Things About kevin owens where to me he's, the closest

(01:21:02):
but yet he's so. Very different it shows nobody can
actually Be Another Roddy Piper dean ambrose in Certain Way,
roddy PIPER but i think he's been kind of handstrong
on being kind of zany and goofy and less edgy
and Credible Like roddy, piper WAS although i think they're
starting to correct course on him a.

Speaker 3 (01:21:20):
LITTLE bit i understand what you're Saying About, kevin OWENS
and i agree with you to. A degree BUT as
i was watching last NIGHT and i Saw That kevin
ollens was getting the, WHAT treatment i, was, like oh
that's not a. Good Sign And kevin ollens is very talented.
And EVERYTHING but i got to. Be HONEST when i
was watching, THAT yesterday i was thinking, to myself boyd

(01:21:42):
is he, looks small not small, and besides but small,
In stature like he didn't Look like nero's biggest star.
To me in the Ring with cizarro and the mizz
he kind of blended in with them and looked like
he belonged on. Their level the thing is is someone

(01:22:03):
Mentioned The piper's Pit With, frankie williams a, job guy
like the lowest of the lowest, job guy the guy
that you could barely understand what the. Guy said the
accent was, so Heavy and piper, turned that took that
opportunity and turned it into a legendary thing to get.
Himself over nobody left today to do a segment WITH

(01:22:26):
say i Don't Know zach ryder or someone Worse Than,
zach ryder do a segment with them and get over nobody.

Speaker 5 (01:22:33):
You could the.

Speaker 3 (01:22:33):
Crowd would crap. On it Even With. Kevin owens so on,
That Regard kevin owens is nowhere to Near, run.

Speaker 1 (01:22:42):
No you know, you're right, you're Right And kevin owens is.
Very different but, you're right he's nowhere, near him and it's.
Just you. You're scratch it's hard to come. Up, With,
UH JIM i i could talk another hour without even realizing,

bruce Mitchell And travis bryant, this week The normal. Friday
hosts travis will actually be gone for a. Few weeks
he is Overseas in SUDAN and I. Think egypt he's

(01:26:14):
traveling doing an, archaeological dag, an annual an annual event
in his LIFE that i know means the world, to
him and it's always cool to hear the stories when
he gets back, in town back, in country and so
he'll be Back with bruce later this Month. On fridays
bruce will be Back next friday at the usual Time.
Seven eastern we are here today at an earlier time

(01:26:36):
than Usual on friday to Accommodate my friday schedule and
that of our guest on. Today's program we've been talking
a Lot About roddy piper. This Week roddy piper in,
the news, of course because he died, last week and
a lot of, wrestlers die and, you know because there's
so many wrestlers and that's the cycle. Of life and

(01:26:58):
you talk about him for a couple of days and
you share some, fond memories and, you know people kind of,
move on and that's just the way the. World works
but there's a certain level of Celebrity And dusty rohodse
was one, of Them vern gania was one, of Them
And roddy piper is one. Of them where when, they're
gone the more that time goes by after, their death

(01:27:19):
the more you actually want to continue talking about them
and learning about them because they were such, special figures
not only in their contributions to, the industry but, as people.
Fascinating people and, Today's guest donny was a Person To
roddy piper and he, years ago but he's got some

(01:27:42):
stories to share and provide another layer of Information. By
piper on, YESTERDAY'S program i played excerpts of a two
thousand and one Issue that roddy Did With Jim Valley
Okay ass radio Out, Of. FLAND oregon i was Joined
by roddy actually kind of did run in on a
interview and they shared some great, stories stories and then

(01:28:04):
we also in a connect sort of interview later that
year two thousand and one one On One Jim Vall
roddy Piper discussing roddy's thoughts on the state of the.
Wrestling industry if you didn't listen to, THAT yet i
strongly encourage you to check out Really. INTERESTING roddy i,
would say back then he was just to put up,

(01:28:25):
only moherent, more cogent more just kind of, on on,
subject on. Task on he was able to maintain his train,
of thought as he, explained himself that was not always
the case in more. Recent years, IN fact i would
even say there was a pretty big drop off during
his RUN. In tna on, his promos they were just,

(01:28:46):
you know rambling and all over the place and really
oftentimes straying off in directions that just you just kind
of left your left you wondering what the heck was
he talking about? And why, but collect, you know stepping
back and looking at the, Big Picture, roddy Piper As
sean waltman, put it don't put one of the in front.

Speaker 5 (01:29:06):
Of.

Speaker 1 (01:29:07):
It uh some people will rank him the greatest heal
in the history of wrestling and a truly. Fascinating person
So when i'll bring in, Today's Guest, Johnny, fairplay johnny
welcome back to.

Speaker 4 (01:29:17):
The, PROGRAM well I mean i didn't expect to be back.
This quickly, trust me we.

Speaker 1 (01:29:23):
Didn't expect to bring you back this, QUICKLY either i.

Speaker 4 (01:29:26):
Found THERE so, i mean can we Call This, interview
friday just just to make me feel a little? More,
Special alright oh.

Speaker 1 (01:29:36):
It is It Is, interview friday and you are the
Guest On. Interview, friday yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:29:40):
ALL right i MEAN BECAUSE I i i always like to
call and Brag to, bruce that, You know i'm On
The big. Boys show when WHEN when i am On
the Thursday, or friday and AND and I and i
have TO admit i kind of feel a little Bit
Like todd martin right NOW because i have notes prepared.
For today, You Know I'm. Bruce mitchell, That's, Right, Well.

Speaker 1 (01:30:00):
Bruce bruce called earlier and gave me some uh some
tips to things to ask. You, about Also But i'm
i'm glad you. TOOK notes, I mean, I. Know johnny first,
of all, people know people probably know. Your background you
WORKED for tna as a manager for a brief amount.

Speaker 4 (01:30:12):
Of time you WAS ever i, WAS well i DON'T
think i was ever really a MANAGER. IN tena i
WAS a i was. A person jeff here explained it
to ME that i was the biggest bad guy in ALL,
of TNA that i didn't need to, manage ANYONE and i,
WAS like i thought that was, your gig and, he,
goes oh we'll work.

Speaker 1 (01:30:29):
It, out, well now wait at why are you are
you going to Be In Global? FORCE wrestling i Mean If, jared, rodger.

Speaker 4 (01:30:35):
No, no no the, only, MANAGER well I guess rosita's
husband or someone's someone's husband or no uh uh Uh
A lady topper or WHATEVER she i think her husband.
Is managing And Then maxwell chicago is, also managing who
normally is, a WRESTLER and i don't know if you've

(01:30:55):
ever seen. Him wrestle he's one of. My favorites he's
He's the loundes singer and it's it's. Really good, SO
no i did not get. The, Call yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:31:05):
I'm spread what maybe you got to pick up the
phone and be proactive, and, Say hey. I'M available i
Don't have.

Speaker 4 (01:31:10):
JEFF'S number, I mean i think it's the.

Speaker 1 (01:31:12):
Same as it was back in, the Nineties so I'M
sure I know.

Speaker 4 (01:31:16):
I HAVEN'T it's, I Mean i'm i'm pretty happy with life.
RIGHT now, i mean, you know if he if, he's interested.
It's OKAY but, i, mean like, you know like. Life's good,
you know last last week. Was crazy was was, Not
EXPECTED like i expected to Read about roddy's passing probably ten,

(01:31:39):
years ago twenty, years ago or thirty. Years AGO so
i think we should all celebrate the the extended life
That that roddy. Did have and you say that because.

Speaker 1 (01:31:52):
You say that because why why did you expect him
not to make it to age? Sixty one because that's,
you know, you know twenty thirty years before they expected
light and you know. Current life, it's, YEAH no, i.

Speaker 4 (01:32:02):
MEAN LIKE i i Don't think i'm what's talking out of?
Turn here? Right right righty would go out And in
hollywood with me and he would point to his left
nostril and, he goes that's one. Million dollars and he'd
point to his right nostril, and goes that's eight. Hundred
thousand the right nostrils not. As good So uh froddie

(01:32:24):
enjoyed life more than anyone on. The planet and and,
You know i'm not going to go into his, his
childhood but he started. VERY rough, i mean rougher than
anyone could. Ever imagine as long as, you're alive there's
THERE'S no, i mean you cannot think any worse than
what his childhood was and he scraped and clawed and

(01:32:48):
and and did everything possible to to make himself and
he did and as, a result he lived life better
and more excitingly than any. Of It like i've done,
crazy STUFF and i couldnot be any prouder or or
or probably less proud certain time, Of ANYTHING LIKE i

(01:33:10):
i live like more THAN anyone. I know roddy exceeded
that by by. A million so uh no he uh
he was on borrowed time for a. Long time and
uh And and god. BLESS him, i mean, you know
that's you, Know it that's that's how you choose to live.
Your life he did it better. Than ANYONE.

Speaker 1 (01:33:34):
So i was talking briefly about where you came from
TO because i want, you, Know PEOPLE, mike O Who's,
johnny fairplay believe it. OR not i know you've got
A decent q rating out there in.

Speaker 4 (01:33:46):
The mainstream but you You were you did put me
Over On stone. Colts podcast so.

Speaker 1 (01:33:52):
That's that i'm glad you think to hear about that or.
Hear it as SOON as i said, your, name, thought
ah that's Gonna make. Johnny's day so you you were
a begon, survivor obviously and and we're one of the,
more memorable uh reality show contestants on. That program you
came back for the For The, all stars one Of The,
all stars also done a lot of Other. Reality yeah so,

(01:34:16):
SO anyway i mean that's but You were You've Known
bruce mitchell longer, Than that you've been a pro wrestling
fan longer, than that you've been a torch reader going
back to when.

Speaker 5 (01:34:25):
A.

Speaker 4 (01:34:25):
Tourch reader oh, my GOD uh. I, Believe.

Speaker 1 (01:34:30):
Yeah so to go a, Ways back so talk talk
about let's let's get into. It though how did you
end up having a h a Connection To? Roddy piper
talk about how.

Speaker 4 (01:34:42):
That, DEVELOPED well i Lived, In portland oregon for only only,
A year like it seems. LIKE longer i didn't. ENJOY
it I was i was getting a GIRL in dc
and she had one year Left at Lewis And clark
university and she was just a and, you know she
had to. Go back she seated an INTERNSHIP in dc and,

(01:35:05):
she goes, she, goes hey do you want to Move?
To PORTLAND and i, was like how? Is it she
goes it kind, Of SUCKS and i, was like, All
right i'll give.

Speaker 5 (01:35:12):
A chance.

Speaker 4 (01:35:14):
AND so i got there and and, you know and
they had, You Know, portland wrestling what have the newest
version they had going at, The time AND and i
got in on the tail end of that as. A manager,
AND uh i was Friends With Smart bart sawyer who
was Tag team champions in US w A With flex
cavana who Later Became the rock and Uh And Smart,

(01:35:36):
BART sawyer i don't know if it was at the
time or prior to That Was roddy piper's. Personal, assistant
ANYWAY so i had a. Small connection they never got
to a MEETING while i Was. IN portland i Moved
To los ANGELES and i GET a i get a random,
phone call and late, at night because a lot of
wrestlers do business very late, at nights not on anyone's normal.

(01:35:59):
Scale control you're Gonna Ask sean waltman when it comes to.
Doing podcasts that's how. That works and and uh he was, just, like,
Hey goes, roddy's looking uh to move back To lay
he's ginning to try to do some more, you. Know
movies he's looking for a. Personal assistant would you mind meeting?
With him i'm, like absolutely and uh and and so

(01:36:23):
UH SO i i Met with roddy At the. Palms,
restaurant uh and he, was familiar very, very nice expensive
Restaurant In, los angeles famous and, uh, SO uh, i
mean do you mind if we're a little, candid here
a little little more, more candid, more.

Speaker 1 (01:36:44):
Candidate giving your eyewitness experiences. WITH him i think the
more the more, we know. THE better, i mean don't,
you know just we're. Family friendly peach Rated On Block.

Speaker 5 (01:36:54):
TALK.

Speaker 4 (01:36:54):
Radio, Y yeah i'm not going to use, bad WORDS but,
i MEAN but i four warnings every one listening there
there will be uh drug drug content mentioned here and and.
Not not i'm not, gonna go, you know, to extreme but, you,
know anyway SO so i got to, you know it's,
just like, you know make sure you bring, some, weed like,

(01:37:14):
you know if you know anyone that, has weed please.
Bring weed, so ANYWAY so I meet riney in the
parking lot On a monday and Uh the palm restaurant and, he, goes, hey,
hey kid, Come HERE and i was, like hey and he,
was like did you?

Speaker 1 (01:37:28):
BRING weed i was.

Speaker 4 (01:37:29):
Like yes he. Goes okay, so anyway so we we
smoke a bowl in the parking lot and we Go in,
he goes, all, right kid tell me. About, yourself where
where are? You from what are you been? Up to?
You know what do you what do? You know what's
going on in? Your life, so anyway so we meet
for we, we have, we have we. HAVE lunch i
had a flame AND yon i had the cream spinach

(01:37:51):
and uh the potatoes and told him everything and, he, goes, great,
great great what are you? Doing tomorrow i'm like nothing is?
You know you want to?

Speaker 6 (01:38:01):
MEET tomorrow i was.

Speaker 4 (01:38:02):
Like sure, he goes you like? This PLACE and i was.
Like yeah, he goes, all right let's. Meet here so
we go back to the palms and then, he, goes,
hey kid did he bring?

Speaker 6 (01:38:11):
ANY weed i, was, Like yes so we we we
we we smoke.

Speaker 4 (01:38:16):
A ball we go and sell you, tell me tell me,
about yourself where? You're from what you? You know where?
He is so this happens four. Days straight he's saying
exact conversation four. Days straight so on the, fifth day.

Speaker 6 (01:38:31):
He, goes uh, all, Right, KID uh.

Speaker 4 (01:38:33):
I don't know a lot. About you kind of puzzling.
TO me i kind of FELT like i told my
life story four. Days ago, He goes, HE goes i
don't know what you got?

Speaker 3 (01:38:47):
Going on?

Speaker 6 (01:38:47):
Once Again BOTHERSOME because i kind of EXPLAINED what i had.

Speaker 4 (01:38:51):
Going on, He goes, I'd like i'd like you to
be my. Personal assistant so write down a number on
a piece of paper and uh and and pass. It
OVER so i wrote eighty thousand dollars on a piece
of paper and he looked at it as you should
have asked. For MORE and i, was like get me back.
The paper he, is no and he took and he.
Ate it, Oh god i'm. Not kidding he actually ate

(01:39:17):
the piece.

Speaker 8 (01:39:17):
Of paper.

job i've. Ever HAD and i was his assistant for about,
a year and it was INSANITY from, I mean i
would say from, day ONE but i, would say, you
know four days prior to, day, ONE like, i, mean
now how nuts?

Speaker 1 (01:40:36):
Is that it's, it's well it's it's. Very NUTS but
i think From what, i've heard It fits. RODDY'S personality, I,
mean johnny there are there are stories in that range
of Strange with.

Speaker 5 (01:40:50):
Roddy.

Speaker 4 (01:40:50):
Forever yeah so this was two thousand, and one just
to just to give a Time.

Speaker 7 (01:40:55):
For.

Speaker 1 (01:40:55):
Dimmer, Sorry yeah so the timing is actually what part
of two thousand and one, that like because we just
ran Interview from March in july two thousand and one
yesterday on.

Speaker 4 (01:41:03):
The show it was probably right at like right right,
after that Probably Like august september, is, like. GUEST gotcha
i think it just it just was Stuff With jim
Bally And jim balley had Heard.

Speaker 6 (01:41:17):
That we've been talking like, right after, so yes it was,
you know a few few.

Speaker 1 (01:41:21):
Months, after, yeah, YEAH well, I MEAN i i think it's,
cool that, you know we have An, interviewed roddy the,
full interview by the ways ON the, vip site but
a good long portion of it Was On yesterday's life
cast right before the time period we're talking about, with
you so people can kind of LISTEN to roddi on
that show and then kind, Of, go okay that's the
version you Know of roddy we're, talking about which which is.

Speaker 4 (01:41:45):
BEEN so, i mean you're, you're talking, you know like
you know he was less lucid in his. Later years i'm,
just like, you KNOW and i listened to the the
the whatever part you put ON the vip with with
With uh roddy and And uh flair and uh and
and you know and and and That's great RODDY and

(01:42:05):
i worked with great but Even. Great roddy, you know if,
there WAS as, i said, you know four days in
a row of the same, EXACT conversation, i mean LIKE
like I thought i was. HITTING punks i, mean like and,
you know this is, before Punks and I'm just i'm,
just like is there, you know is there? A kick
like there's, No, way like how can this guy listen
to someone told THE same, i mean he loves telling

(01:42:28):
the same stories over and, over again but why is
he asking to hear the same stories about me that
were not famous stories at? The time?

Speaker 1 (01:42:38):
All right so so Let's because roddy's like forty seven
years old at. THIS point, i mean he's, you know,
pretty young, YOU know, I know, i mean it's just,
you know he's a different it's a different stage in
life when you're his. Personal assistant so just WALK as.

Speaker 4 (01:42:55):
I DON'T know, I was i WAS probably I think
i was probably twenty uh uh quite, twenty eight twenty
nine at.

Speaker 1 (01:43:03):
The time and and he had personal assistance before that
and also, after that as far as, you know for
for a, long stretch and what where what did the?
Personal assistant what did you do and what was your
understanding of the Need of roddy's need to have somebody just,
you know be his. PERSONAL assistance i don't know how

(01:43:25):
many wrestlers have per personal assistance you know.

Speaker 4 (01:43:29):
Like, this, yeah, YEAH no I MEAN I i i
as far as before and. After, me uh those those
those ARE questions i, cannot answer NOR do i want
to address in. ANY way i can tell you my
responsibilities AND what, i Did AND i'm i mine might
be a. Little different my job was, to, uh directors

(01:43:57):
producers and writers About. Scripts roddy roddy did leave home
at an. Early age he had some, difficulty reading so
so we'd spent a large portion of the day just
me getting scripts and, reading reading reading the entire script from,
you know from, start spinish, you know usually eighty to one,

(01:44:19):
hundred pages and me doing different voices for the. DIFFERENT
characters i mean that was a huge chunk of.

Speaker 9 (01:44:26):
My.

Speaker 8 (01:44:27):
Day.

Speaker 1 (01:44:27):
Yep YEAH.

Speaker 4 (01:44:31):
And i CAN'T imagine i can't imagine the other personal
assistants being able to do.

Speaker 1 (01:44:35):
That because the, OTHER assistance, i mean there were probably
a range, of backgrounds but they were usually just, you
know young men in their, early twenties usually.

Speaker 4 (01:44:47):
Late, teens, Yes YEAH and i mean he often asked,
me to, you know go work out with him and,
all that and, and UH.

Speaker 6 (01:44:56):
And i had no desire to, Do, that like, you
know he was, just, like hey, you know let's go
to the Ch.

Speaker 4 (01:45:00):
And, i'm, like no, he goes, you know, you know
just do the Sauna and, i'm, like nope sounds. Even
WORSE so i was possibly the best personal assistant he
had as far as business stuff that, Was done like
other than one night at THE xwf ta Things Where

(01:45:24):
kurt hinting ghosed ME and i was asleep for pretty
close to twenty. Four hours. That sucked but other, THAN,
that i, you know, business wise, you know but but, you, know,
OTHERWISE yeah. I was i was pretty worthless as far,
as like, YOU know i don't, work out, you know

(01:45:44):
so that's not not. My gig you're a more.

Speaker 1 (01:45:47):
Professional duty you were more interested in the professional duties
than the. PERSONAL duties, I, mean.

Speaker 4 (01:45:53):
I YEAH i i never wore a, fannie pack, all
right AND don't i don't believe any other assistant that
he ever had did not wear a.

Speaker 1 (01:46:05):
Fanny, pack yeah, oh. Yeah man those pictures are classic of,
you know there's Not A kevin nash picture from the
nineties without a, fanny pack. You know, All Right, so
johnny you took. SOME notes i have more questions to,
ask YOU and i can lead you in. Different ways
but there's SOME things i might not even know. To
ask so you took, some notes tell me some things
that you in particular want to talk about that you

(01:46:28):
think will shed some light and provide some perspective On who,
roddy was and and, you know entertaining and form our
listeners who want to know More. ABOUT roddy, i mean
that's that's what this whole week and a half or,
YOU know.

Speaker 4 (01:46:39):
I guess not JUST weak i, should say has.

Speaker 1 (01:46:42):
BEEN about, i mean it's been a Learning experienced. TORCH
readers i got to read the cover story this WEEK that,
i wrote and the and the Full Page todd martin
column in This week's torture news letter that went, online
yesterday along with a transcript Of the Flare And roddy
piper interview from two thousand and one AND towards bat
members also have been able to listen to over An
Hour bruce Mitchell. Recorded sunday we did a long portion

(01:47:04):
On the Fix With todd Martin on Wednesday About, Roddy Piper,
jim valley who grew up or shouldn't he? Grew up
but it was because he interviewed him as an. Adult
too but lived In the portland area In The pacific
northwest region and got To See roddy piper in his
prime and got to interview him and shared some great
Stories on Tuesdays Pw torch live tast and we also
put up from about nine years Ago A Bruce mitchell

(01:47:31):
adios show that we recorded Dedicated To roddy piper two
around the time THAT his dvd was, coming out and
right around the time that He And rick flair at
a very advanced stage ONE That Wwe Tag. Team championship
so there's been a lot of, good audio not to
Mention The jim valley two thousand and. One Interviews, so
johnny people who have been FOLLOWING, towards vp listening to all,
the audio reading what, we have what, we've written listen

(01:47:52):
to what, we said a real. Diverse guest we know
a Lot, about roddy, BUT you, i know have some
stories that people have heard yet and can provide some.
Additional perspective so that's kind of you Know what i'm,
looking for and for doubt, ABOUT it i think that's
not how you got. It, fair.

Speaker 4 (01:48:07):
Yeah absolutely the big THING is I mean i don't
remember if you mentioned It Or bruce mitch mentioned it
On The Bruce, mitchell audio which is AVAILABLE for. Vip subscribers,
Of course roddy never watched. WRESTLING ever i mean he
Just never he's never. Sat down and SO when i was,

(01:48:30):
his assistant there was an Episode, of SmackDown and it
Was When paul hayman Was, writing SmackDown and there was
a particular he heavn't forbid he watched the. Entire EPISODE
so i KIND of i purposely tried to time it
out for like the last like, you know thirty thirty
forty minutes of an Episode of SmackDown for him. To

(01:48:51):
Watch And paul hayman cut a pretty scathing Promo on
vince McMahon. And uh and then and the main.

Speaker 6 (01:49:00):
Event was like an eight man Tag With kurd.

Speaker 4 (01:49:03):
Angle And and i'm guessing Uh stone cold and others
and just a really really good, match here everybody joining
their finishers and stuff. And Uh and ronny had been,
you know out of the wrestling scene for for quite
some time at, this point and so so he Watched
his paul him and, HE.

Speaker 3 (01:49:20):
Goes i Remember, That god and, he goes he's.

Speaker 4 (01:49:26):
PRETTY good i like what.

Speaker 5 (01:49:27):
He's, Saying.

Speaker 4 (01:49:30):
YEAH like i, was like he's. SHOOTING me i don't know.
About that and then he Sees kerd angle and he
was really impressed With. Kurd angle he, he loved he
Loved What kurt angle did and and and and he
thought and he and and afterwards, he goes well that
thank you.

Speaker 6 (01:49:48):
VERY much i can honestly go the rest of my
life without. Watching.

Speaker 4 (01:49:52):
Again wow BUT and i don't think it was. AN
insult i just like he. JUST doesn't, i mean like
that's NOT for, i mean there's some wrestlers that that
watch everything and and, you know and. AND learn, i
MEAN like i think it's it's obvious from some of
the things you've you've Heard About daniel bryan in the
in the. PAST month, i mean, you know he's, always

(01:50:14):
studying he's trying to evolve his character and. All that
And and roddy was the exact opposite. Of that and
and THAT'S and I would i Would imagine hulk is.
PRETTY COOL i i Can't imagine hulk sitting there watching
the network other than possibly. Watching himself, but uh but
But but roddy just did, Not care, Like right roddy
had no desire to. SEE himself, i mean he he

(01:50:36):
could tell you how grade he was and that was enough,
for him and and and his version of how great
he is is better than anything you. Could, say, yeah
yeah so SO so i you, know that that's that's
THAT'S something i wanted to wanted to share because, YOU
know i don't, YOU know i would guess a lot
of people wouldn't. Guess, that, so yeah he liked he,
liked him and he thought he was, Just, LIKE wow

(01:50:59):
i don't know that, that guy. HE'S good i. Like
him so so that's, that's cool you. Know that that's
that's something that. Stands. Out uh, Another story uh we
were uh this is one of those personal assistant we Were.

Speaker 1 (01:51:13):
In johnny how long were you as personal for for?

Speaker 4 (01:51:17):
A year for? A?

Speaker 1 (01:51:17):
Year gotcha so some years worth the stories here to.
Pull from that's pretty good.

Speaker 4 (01:51:22):
Time for, OH well i MEAN like i WELL KNOW
i i can tell you. RIGHT now i Cannot tell
noddy for some of.

Speaker 7 (01:51:27):
The, STORY.

Speaker 1 (01:51:30):
YEAH I.

Speaker 4 (01:51:32):
I i i know your your your target demo and
AND and I AND i i played by. Those Rules
ronnie rodney would not have played well. HE might i
don't know another thing, real quick uh uh you know
he he whenever he would, meet someone he would refer
to them as as sir, or gentleman like, You Know
jim valley mentioned and that that. Is true whenever he called,

(01:51:53):
you champ that meant he thought you were. Sweetly retarded
so that's so ANYONE that i was so excited about being.
Called champ he does not mean that as. A. Compliment
YEH so i that just feels that that's just a
little heat on my hard to get. Out there, you
know it's okay to be. The backup so but another.

(01:52:16):
Another story so we we Went to chicago to DO
uh tv for uh X w s and they did
a house Show in Chicago, and milwaukee and so we
we had DONE a tv and and radio. That morning
so that morning ON, the tv they sent the limousine

(01:52:37):
for us and it, Was me RODDY and i Guess The.
Chicago blackhawks it just Won The stanley cup and uh
so we were riding With the blackhawks in the limousine
With The stanley CUP and i thought it was the.
Coolest Thing and i'm just LIKE can i? Hold it
and they're, like Yeah and, I'm, Like roddy i'm like look,
at ME like i was a little the Pointed that

(01:53:00):
canadian wouldn't Appreciate The stanley cup as much as. Not,
really yeah, so no it was it was No big deuilly.
To him and as far, AS championships i asked him,
About that uh. He did he never wanted to, carry
them SO because i, YOU know i was, just like,
you know we're, you jealous you, you know they didn't
give you any just like it more more stuff of.

(01:53:22):
MY luggage i don't.

Speaker 3 (01:53:23):
WANT to i don't.

Speaker 4 (01:53:23):
Want it so, so yeah so that that was. His
thing he didn't. WANT to i mean we would fly
places and he would honestly check sixth carry on. OF
crap i mean just and and and his carry ons
were the size of most people's. Normal suitcases but he
always flew, first class so they let. It go, BUT
yeah i.

Speaker 1 (01:53:43):
Mean it was, it, was, yeah like what tell us
about what was in? THE carryons i assume you helped.

Speaker 4 (01:53:51):
Well one time.

Speaker 6 (01:53:55):
One time that this is this, IS right, i mean
this IS actually i can tell you EXACTLY when i
WAS when i was his, personal assistant.

Speaker 4 (01:54:02):
Because this is this is uh like probably like the
week after nine, to eleven, and uh we we Flew to.

Speaker 6 (01:54:13):
Florida, and uh he's checking his bags and there were
needles in his bag and uh and and and there
were there were possibly other drugs present at, this time,
you know uh up outside the needles and Uh and tsa, is,
like uh you can't fly with.

Speaker 4 (01:54:35):
These needles, HE goes i have.

Speaker 3 (01:54:36):
A prescription i, Am allow, I'm allowed i'm flying.

Speaker 6 (01:54:39):
First class you're You're.

Speaker 4 (01:54:40):
Gonna and, they're, like no, You can't like it's just
a problem with the Needles because i'm flying with the Needles,
AND laradi i think. You're good just just lose. This
battle and he was, like, No NO so i mean
the guy he just he he had no comprehension of
of the REAL like i was a, Big. DEAL wade

(01:55:05):
i don't know if. You're aware roddy. Was not he
had no clue the significance of what nine eleven meant
to fight travel as as.

Speaker 1 (01:55:14):
A whole But was Roddy aware and this sounds like a,
strange question but was he aware? Of time like like
did he just live in the moment like a cat
and just it was just all about indulging in whatever
was happening at. The moment, that yeah, VERY mean.

Speaker 4 (01:55:35):
I think that's that's a. Great DESCRIPTION is, I mean
i'm looking at my cat licking himself, right now, AND
yeah i, would, say well.

Speaker 1 (01:55:44):
He wasn't he wasn't about, looking backwards and he wasn't
all that much about. Planning ahead but that's kind, of
why YOU know i asked. That earlier YOU almost i
don't know about, all, many right but not that he was.
Retired wrestler he was an, active actor. YOU know i
mean he had, you know he had things, going on
uh throughout his. Whole life he. Actually acted he was
a lead actor in like twenty.

Speaker 4 (01:56:04):
Movies mostly and the thing, about that LIKE like i,
mentioned that, you know he Added To culty ree he could, memorize,
ANYTHING anything i mean. Like that that's THAT'S why. I
was i was, so shocked, you know like his promos towards,
the end but like. HE would i just think he
didn't like the promos that they. GAVE him, i mean

(01:56:25):
he could remember, any time, Like anything he could remember
if he. WANTED to, i mean like he just if
he had the ability just tell himself. To, REMEMBER yeah
i just think he didn't if he didn't. Like it
he was Just like i'm gonna. Remember This.

Speaker 20 (01:56:42):
I'm, kelly wells host of P W T, talks nxt

YouTube or stream later wherever you get.

Speaker 1 (01:57:04):
Your. Podcasts WELL and i NOTICED in tna, a right,
YOU know i would THINK in tna he was given
the chance to go out there in whatever drug state
of mind he may or may not have been in
that at that particular evening and just ramble because there

(01:57:25):
was no LEADERSHIP in tna that he respected enough to
actually stick to, the script so he would just ramble
and disjoined it and he was all over the place
and no no real train. Of thought and then when
you GO, to wwe which won the, two thousands well
over the last, Dozen years i'd noticed he was much more.
On POINT and i think. IT'S interesting, I mean i

(01:57:46):
think HE just wwe was. More disciplined they actually probably
presented him with, the script he couldn't, memorize it and He,
respected vincicmahn WHEREAS in tna he didn't and he. Actually, did,
yeah yeah He.

Speaker 4 (01:57:57):
RESPECTED vince, i MEAN like. I would i don't even
think he Knows Who jeff, hararratt is So and i'm
sure that that's who he was. Dealing with, So YEAH
i'm i mean he might. WHO knows, i MEAN like,
I know i MEAN like i would, love to, you
know to voice this and this IS not. I love
i Love, hul cogan uh, YOU know i consider him.

(01:58:18):
A friend roddy did Not, like hulkogan so so, you
know let's just, you know best friends and. All that
they were not. BEST friends i mean when when we
were next w, f uh, You know hogan showed up
last minute And and roddy was furious and he was
doing everything possible to do anything to. Disparage he he

(01:58:41):
didn't care, FOR him, i MEAN so i mean like
that was a real, life rivalry, you know, YOU know
i mean just just not, YOU know i heard watch.
HER back i don't like the, you know he didn't like,
the guy so, you know AND and i don't think
that changed in. RECENT years, i mean like, you KNOW the.

(01:59:01):
I did the LAST time I saw roddy was last
year At The mad. Monster party they had a big.

Speaker 6 (01:59:06):
Wrestling panel and uh and and uh they they were
asked questions about Me and gene was. The Moderator jimmy hart,
was there and You know Hulk and roddy and and
someone asked a question about The first WrestleMania and Uh
And sidney laufer and and Ho and hogan was was
Not any hume SARIOUS because i probably said ten words

(01:59:27):
of her the Entire time And, And roddy roddy stepped
up and, he, goes uh he's selling the truth on.

Speaker 1 (01:59:34):
This.

Speaker 4 (01:59:34):
One folks she hated him and the only reason she
did it was because she was a fan of MINE
and i loved her and she. Loved me And and,
hogan goes he's right about, that. Too BROTHER so i
heard you, talking about, you know who could have Like
If roddy piper, wasn't there you know who could have?

(01:59:55):
Replaced him and the Reason that cindy law for, you
know came in was Because Of. Roddy piper did did
her boyfriend, Or Husband dave wolfe? Influence? Her possibly but
lots of celebrities at that time Thought That roddie piper.
Was Cool hul kochin. WASN'T cool i, mean like, you
know like look at. The gimmick it's it's that wasn't a.

(02:00:18):
Cool Get ronnie piper. Was something, You know sean woman
said he was a. GREAT clever i think he's a.
Grace CILEVER like.

Speaker 6 (02:00:25):
I don't think anyone was.

Speaker 4 (02:00:27):
BETTER more i mean like he had a dangerous field
to him and. His promos he he he scared you
and made you laugh in the. Same PROMO and i
don't think anyone's ever.

Speaker 1 (02:00:38):
Done, that, yeah, yeah okay any anything else on your
on your notes that fits in our conversation right now
before we move on to, small, too sure.

Speaker 4 (02:00:50):
But well, once again So the. Chicago, thing so so
we DO the tv and then we head over to
go To man cal And the bishop Don The magic lawn,
is there and uh that for for those that that
that know who he is or, DON'T know, i mean
he's one of the gris pemps of. All time he's
snooped all his best friend blah. Blah blah and so he,

(02:01:11):
invites us Me and roddy To the pimp Of The,
year awards and uh AND and i had just Finished Watching,
Pimps Up post down and all the, You Know america
undercover documentaries at, the TIME and i, was, Like, OH
roddy i really want.

Speaker 13 (02:01:24):
To go that.

Speaker 4 (02:01:26):
Seems like something we should not miss and Uh and,
RONNIE goes i don't good to. Nails go, so anyway
so there's in the limousine and we go and we
get there and the only three white males there, Are,
me roddy and a pimp Named Mister. White folks and
if you've ever seen, the Documentary Mister white folks is

(02:01:47):
a white pimp and and he does pump things and
uh and there's there's, you know, white hose but you
know that's that's that's. That's it everyone else is is and.
So Uh iced tea Received The Life Time achievement award
that Night And snoop dog was there to present him.
That award so, uh So so Roddy beats snoopy because,

(02:02:10):
he goes Is That? Snoopy Dog and, i'm, like yes that's,
well Close THAT'S, snoop dogg, you know and he and he,
goes yes and, HE goes i want to, meet HIM
and i was. Like okay so we walk up, and
uh once again like, YOU know i don't think this
is a BAD as i, Said like i'm not gonna
go in a great detail about about. OTHER things I

(02:02:32):
don't i don't think marijuana is a. Bad thing i'm
not a, huge, partaker however YOU know i have in.
The past And, uh, so anyway so You, Know roddy
roddy does have some weed on him at. This time,
so Anyway so Roddy meets snoop and so, he goes, Oh,
Hot roight oh, my, GOD brother i.

Speaker 3 (02:02:50):
Love you you're.

Speaker 4 (02:02:51):
The Best and roddy just gets him.

Speaker 6 (02:02:52):
This desk There and i'm, just, like okay this.

Speaker 4 (02:02:56):
Isn't good and he goes, he, Goes.

Speaker 3 (02:02:58):
Man rody you you. My hero oh, MY god i.

Speaker 4 (02:03:01):
Love you and he, goes, yep okay. GREAT bye i, was.
Like okay so so we go back and. Sit down i'm, Just.

Speaker 3 (02:03:09):
Like roddie what was?

Speaker 4 (02:03:10):
THAT about i guess what was that behind? His ear
and UH and i, was like what? The blunt and,
he goes yeah he is he was what was because,
WITH that i, was, like well it's it's. A cigar
you you cut out, the tobacco you put weed. In
there oh so he had WEED and i was, like
yeah he, guess well if he's Not sharing i'm, Not
SHARING and i, Was, LIKE roddie i don't think. You

(02:03:35):
understand again With A, SNOOP dog i think he's generous
weed than he is for being a rapper at. This
point so, so, yeah no he he was Upset That
snoop dog did not offer weed, to it and and
and AND like, i mean and and we weren't really
at the place to. Be, confrontational yeah it's a, bad

(02:04:01):
story but YOU know, I said i gave a warning going.

Speaker 1 (02:04:04):
Into the absolutely absolutely. All right back to the, phone lines.
We go, let's go and back to, our guests. We

rod shirt and it didn't result. In anything, no, angle,

(02:05:20):
no NO like i want to Represent. Hot, ROD no i,
want nothing nothing. Like that i'm, just, thinking like What
Would roddy piper himself do in a, similar situation and
how he would maybe think of them sort of maybe
disrespecting the business a little bit by not, like that

(02:05:42):
this KIND of i, don't know commemorating goes in front
of being pro wrestling heel.

Speaker 8 (02:05:48):
AND babys i didn't see it.

Speaker 1 (02:05:50):
AS controversial i just thought it was their way of
just quietly acknowledging and paying Tribute. To roddy that was
kind of my interpretation. OF it i think the reason
we haven't talked About IT vince's i didn't think a
lot more, About, it johnny what do.

Speaker 4 (02:06:04):
YOU think i think the The younger roddy might have
had a problem. With it The older roddy would have would,
Have said god.

Speaker 5 (02:06:13):
Bless.

Speaker 4 (02:06:13):
YOU yeah, i mean like the Thing with roddy is
he was a great heel and and honestly. He was
he was a GREAT baby, i MEAN like i hated the.
Baby faces And when roddy came back and did that
that that That that farewell match thing With with Adrian
and donnas and and they played the was it Take?

(02:06:34):
ME Home I, PHIL collins, i cried so uh, you,
KNOW so i mean he was obviously a great. Baby
face SO SO i I think i think both sides
had the right to wear, that shirt is THE way
i looked. At IT and I think roddy would.

Speaker 21 (02:06:48):
Have agreed That's not that's not like WHAT what i
kind of mean is uh that if Let's Say, ronda
rousey a krano wearing A pod, rod shirt she would
take issue. With it, and like as pro, WRESTLING characters
i would think that two wrestlers on opposite sides, should,

(02:07:12):
SAY no i get to pay tribute and. You Don't
like that's sort of more OF what i mean that.
They didn't they didn't. Care that, you know they're having
this big feude and then both of them are wearing the,
same shirt AND like i think pro wrestlers would and
should like have a confrontation.

Speaker 1 (02:07:32):
About, that, Yeah. OKAY vince I mean i don't feel strongly,
about IT but i. GET what i get what. YOU'RE
saying i think probably what Happened is vici man and
the and the writing team had what they wanted their
women to do this Week, on raw and a couple
of them happened to decide to WEAR a t shirt
to be a Tribute, to roti and it just wasn't

(02:07:53):
worked into. The STORYLINE and i don't think anybody thought
about it like, you Did, ad vince where, you know
if one person, wore It then sody on another team,
would go HEY wait i get to. Wear it they
could have. Done it it would have. Been FINE but
i don't see it myself and on it's just a
glaring omission or any kind of disrespect or ANYTHING that
i think most. People NOTICED but, I do i do

(02:08:14):
get what. YOU'RE saying, i mean they could have, done it,
you know and it would have been just fine as.

Speaker 21 (02:08:17):
They, did, YEAH yeah i mean you, always say on
a scale of, one attendance it maybe like, a tree
it's not a, big deal but, it's something, you know
it's still something that if they would have, DONE it
i think it would have been more professional wrestling and
people would have gotten a kick out, Of, it, Like
yeah lottie would have done that. Maybe too, that's yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:08:37):
That's where i'm.

Speaker 1 (02:08:37):
Coming From cool.

Speaker 8 (02:08:39):
Rachel And h.

Speaker 21 (02:08:41):
I'm good i'm gonna go back and listen to and.

Speaker 13 (02:08:43):
Drive home, All, right.

Speaker 1 (02:08:45):
Well it's awesome Hearing. FROM finland i love when We
get international college, real quick.

Speaker 4 (02:08:55):
REAL quick i THINK it's i think it's pretty awesome
that there's a character like roddyfy or that both heels
and faces can. Can support and and it's okay in
the dynamic because he was so spectacular, at both, you
know like surely didn't address but but, you know if
just the faces would have, done it, you know it would, Been,

(02:09:17):
LIKE okay i. Get it BUT like i think he
was so great at both that they. ALLOWED both i
think that's just A. Compliment RATI so, i MEAN like
i don't Want to heal wearing a dusty, road shirt,
you know is a great heel in.

Speaker 21 (02:09:31):
The, seventies yeah, oh wait, really Quick your amazon link
just Work ON. Amazon uk also it, Doesn't KNOW oh,
I don't i.

Speaker 1 (02:09:45):
Don't, know yes we We Actually james caldle just looked
into that a little bit for us and emailed me,
on IT and i believe we do have a, working
Link but i'm not sure if it's. Implemented yet so that's.

Speaker 21 (02:09:56):
Something, More, OKAY yeah I, can, Yeah, okay.

Speaker 1 (02:10:03):
Vince thank. YOU great i really.

Speaker 8 (02:10:04):
Appreciate.

Speaker 1 (02:10:05):
You, Colin, yeah johnny, it's funny like, you know he
talks about it being, you know on a one to,
ten scale. With three i'll say Something on TWITTER like
i don't LIKE and i didn't, say this BUT like
i Don't Like donald trump's, tie tonight and people, be
like how can you? Say that or, you know get.
A life it's like it's just like not even a
one out of ten just Because.

Speaker 4 (02:10:22):
Spid twitter, you Know Well Brett brett hart ranks everything
four out, of ten so it. Doesn't matter, everything's real,
real quick like a nice. Nice, sidebar uh, you know
Talking about, Hogan's, friends uh FROM what? I could, i,

(02:10:42):
mean like, YOU KNOW i i only had a year
with With with RODDY and i can. Say this He
Loves kurt hitting more than anyone on. The planet he
would tell me on on on a regular basis his greatest.
Memories ever we're riding in a Car With kurt hitting
and Let's To willie nelson rid At, a stranger which
is the first concept album of. All time anyone that hasn't,

(02:11:06):
heard it, They said and a concept album is. A
story that is an album that tells the story throughout throughout.
The album, and uh they would listen to that album
or cassette uh on loop for eight hours straight and
never say a word to each other and just sing sing.
Those songs and he Considered those he considered that, the

(02:11:27):
greatest the greatest times of his. Entire life so so,
YOU know i was, there experienced, you know like you
know times with Him and kurtz and him and Royd.
War hawk, he, Loved talked he told me lots of
stories About. Mister fuji he Loved. Mister, fuji Oh mister
fuji apparently had some of the greatest dinner parties anyone

(02:11:48):
could have ever been. Invited to and then THOSE stories
i Cannot, Tell.

Speaker 1 (02:11:55):
John johnny let me stop you without swearing or being.
Too explicit what why were? They great let's let's there's
literally nothing you can say to A.

Speaker 4 (02:12:10):
Characteristic there is LITERALLY nothing i can say about A mister.
FUJI party i don't EVEN think i could say it
ON an r. Rated program.

Speaker 6 (02:12:21):
Is a lot cooler than any of us.

Speaker 1 (02:12:22):
Ever match, all right, all, right well to me and
to me people are the cool Factor. IS john i
just want, to say, to me the coolest people in
the world are people who can put on hiking shoes
and go, enjoy nature not people who do drugs and.
Higher PROSTITUTES but i GET what i.

Speaker 4 (02:12:40):
DID not i did not, mention drugs and there's no.

Speaker 1 (02:12:42):
No no i'm just saying, in general when you talk
about a.

Speaker 4 (02:12:44):
Cool, and, say well let me finish, this funny you
don't Know what.

Speaker 1 (02:12:47):
I'm saying it's the. Only finish i'm, just saying like
when you say there's some stuff going out at a
party that you literally can't see even ON an r,
rated show and how cool, He was i'm, JUST saying
i don't think everybody thinks the coolest thing in the
world are things you literally can't say ON an r.
Rated show, to me there's a lot of a lot
of ways to be cool that don't involve that kind
of todd reaspect of thinks that aren't. Even mentionable That's all. I'm,

Speaker 1 (02:14:22):
Than karaoke it was more than a really good, karaoke.

Speaker 4 (02:14:24):
Then, yes yes much. Much more and Uh also Karrie. Von,
eric uh he had a really strong bond to so
and AND and i don't like, you KNOW and i
Talked With bruce mitchell about this is like you you
wouldn't have seen their paths crossing. That often and they
they just had this really short moment and and and,
in fact and the segue, Into This brett hart he.

(02:14:47):
CONSIDERED family i, mean like not only did he consider
one of his best, friends ever he considered family because
he Was.

Speaker 13 (02:14:53):
From.

Speaker 1 (02:14:53):
Canada, uh, yeah boy that piper match was, You know
brett talks about that to. This day is what, elevated him,
you know from upper mid card to, main event, you
know or even being considered a.

Speaker 4 (02:15:04):
Main event so and and and, YOU know, i Mean
I'M i'm i know you've read, You Know brett, hart's
BOOK which i consider the best. Wrestling, BOOK no i
love mcfouley is probably my favorite favorite person on. THE
planet i, love mcfully, but Uh The brett HART book
i consider. The best brett used to record himself after

(02:15:25):
the matches and and you know and talk about, you
know you know how great he was and how everyone
else wasn't as good and and. All, That, Roddy uh
roddy would do something very like WHEN when i was Working,
for roddy he had a double bag full of tapes,
that like, after matches he had a little recorder and
and he would he would. Record things so so when

(02:15:49):
Right when roddy went went to do, his books, you
know he had all.

Speaker 6 (02:15:52):
Those tapes and you know the Problem with.

Speaker 4 (02:15:55):
Roddy's book Is whoever Scott and streenfellow put out, the
book But whoever goes wrote.

Speaker 1 (02:16:01):
THE book.

Speaker 4 (02:16:03):
I don't think they could make heads or tails Of
what roddy. Was saying.

Speaker 1 (02:16:08):
Now that would, BE honestly i would BUY a. I
might i SHOULDN'T say i would, buy IT but i
might buy and read a book that was just a
pure chronological transcript of. Those.

Speaker 4 (02:16:16):
Tapes, Yeah absolutely once you get another Segue as audible
a sponsored, this month they, Are, yes okay WELL can
i just throw out and this?

Speaker 6 (02:16:29):

you're about throw. Out there danielbrian's book is. Now available
it's nine hours and three minutes and if you were to,
buy it he would be thirty two dollars and eighty. Eight,
cents yes, you're right, You're, Right okay so what's the

(02:17:04):
promo code for them.

Speaker 1 (02:17:05):
Not to have to spend thirty two as audible Trial
Dot Com Slash Pro. Wrestling torch Audibletrial Dot Com Slash Pro,
Wrestling Torch Daniel bryant's yest book. Is available you are right.
Now hours we've talked about this earlier in. The week
it is the best time to take advantage Of that
audible trial if you have. Not yet Audibletrial Dot Com

(02:17:25):
Slash Pro, wrestling torch all one word and you get
a free audiobook as part of your free. Trial membership
I'm an audible MEMBER and i look forward to using
my monthly credit for a. Discounted AUDIOBOOK and i started
with the free trials just like everybody else who have
taken advantage of that on. THE show i do want to.
KNOW too i mentioned this Usually Around new year's because
Of The new, year's RESOLUTIONS but i get emailed about

(02:17:47):
this ENOUGH that i do like to mention it that
there is a non, smoking book quit smoking book that works,
so WELL and i swear BY because i have so
many friends and family who have utilized, this book and
it is available as a. Free trial so if you're
a smoker and look, into quit or you have a
loved one who you has tried different methods and, hasn't

(02:18:10):
succeeded the success rate on this is. Crazy high it
has a four point eight rating out of Five on
audible and it has a similar high Rating on amazon
if you get the. Print copy but It's Called The
easy Way To stop Smoking By ALAN CARR. A. L. L.
E n C. AR r i see if you want
if you're a smoker and you want, to quit you

(02:18:31):
have a loved one who wants, to quit IT is.
I know i have friends who tried for decades, to
quit and tried the patch and, tried everything willpower and
all of, this stuff and all you need to do
is read, this BOOK and i won't give away how.
It works it's, not ntiz it's not hypnotizing or anything,
like that but it's very much deconstructing why, you smoke

(02:18:51):
constructing a scenario for, not smoking inspiring you to. Do
so there's. No fear it's not about scaring you or anything.
Like that it really breaks down the addiction and why
you have it to the point that you understand it
enough to be able to, conquer it and, sets real
very realistic expectations on what it will take to quit

(02:19:11):
and how to, do it what, to endure when not to,
give up and it gives people the confidence to follow
his his very very simple plan once you finish, the
book because he says you'll be eager to quit smoking during,
this book but he doesn't want, you to and when
you close, the book he wants you to go have
one final smoke and then be done. With it AND
everybody i know who's read the book has done that and,

(02:19:32):
quit successfully so it's. Pretty amazing so check that. Out
too but, Wrestling Fans daniel brian's book is out, there
too so Maybe Get daniel briant for free and then
Buy The non smoking bookcase it's probably a. Little cheaper it's, probably,
Cheaper YES but i haven't given that non smoking plug
in a. Long time but it came up recently WITH somebody,
i KNOW and i WANTED to i wanted to mention
that AGAIN because i do get emails from people saying

(02:19:53):
this changed. My life i'm no longer spending eight bucks
a day for cigarettes and in having a, you know
my clothes well, and all, you know all the stuff
that smokers, worry about, you know and in long term health.
Of course so it's a. Cool Thing and, i'm yeah, Go,
ahead johnny and.

Speaker 4 (02:20:07):
You listened NOW now i feel that you Listen To
mick buley's audio audio books.

Speaker 1 (02:20:13):
On, Tape no i've only.

Speaker 4 (02:20:14):
Read them, OH see i read them and and then
AND then i listened to them and he tells he,
narrates them and you know a lot of authors, do
not and he AND and I AND i I TOLD
mick i was actually upset. TO him i was, just like,
you know as MUCH as i love reading your BOOK
and i thought it, Was great i'm just like, on
audio it's it blows it out of the Water because

(02:20:37):
mick's just so. INTO it, i mean like all the
stories he tells or just you know that the emphasis
that that that that you have in your head that,
you know like you feel, mixed voice but but like
when you hear him, say it it's just like like it's,
you know it's like, you know six hours of of
of promos of, you KNOW and I think mick is

(02:21:01):
one of one of the. GREATEST ever I mean I
put roddy ahead, of him so JUST because.

Speaker 1 (02:21:07):
I WAS just i was just emailing with me earlier today,
in fact and talking about trying to get him on,
this show, WHICH yeah I think.

Speaker 4 (02:21:17):
I have i am making my, top FIVE and i
Honestly have roddy. NUMBER one i mean because he just
just the BELIEF of i mean like and, you know Props.
TO mick i think he's one of the most believable
characters ever because he just brought you. So inside but
just just that just that that scary Factor that. Roddy
had and in, going back, You Know bruce mitchell MENTIONED

(02:21:42):
when i was, GROWING up i grew Up, In, danville
virginia which is forty five Minutes, From Greensboro. North carolina
we used To Have crockett Wrestling Mid atlantic WRESTLING. On
tv it Was on friday nights at. Eleven fifteen it
was so popular that they the news to fifteen minutes

(02:22:02):
so they could show. Wrestling. Early. Wow WOW and, i
remember as, a kid four or five, Years Old roddy
piper coming on and playing, those bagpipes AND and I,
loved RODDY but i hated. The BAGPIPES and, i remember, like,
EVERYONE literally i would go up TO the TV and
i would TURN if i, saw him so as he

(02:22:23):
started playing, THE bagpipes i would turn down the volume on,
the television and as soon as he, WAS done i.
WOULD come i would walk up TO the tv and
turn the volume.

Speaker 1 (02:22:32):
BACK up.

Speaker 4 (02:22:34):
I don't i don't even KNOW if i CAN turn
i don't even KNOW how i can walk up TO
my tv and turn out the volume and turn it down.

Speaker 1 (02:22:39):
This, point yeah. All right let me let me. Say
this there's a great mystery in this world that needs to.
Be SOLVED and i AM and i am not going
to be the one to. Do this but there's somebody
out there who wants to figure out what the missing
five minutes are In the in the revised Version Of

(02:23:01):
Daniel Brian's, YES book i want. To know and HERE'S why, i.
Say it there is a there's a version on audible
dot com that is nine hours and eight minutes and
it's got a certain graphic. On it Was released july.
Twenty first there is a new version with a much,
better cover by, the way much, better, design cover much,
less busy and it's but it's the, same book, same price.

(02:23:23):
Same everything but it's nine hours and three minutes and
it was Released on, july thirtieth nine. Days later somebody's
got to figure out what five minutes got taken out
nine days after the book. CAME out I need i'm
not GONNA let i don't. KNOW how i guess you'd
have to set up like two devices to start playing
it at the exact same time and and then listen

(02:23:45):
until there's, a difference and then mark down what that
difference is and, tell US because i want to know
whether it was a Lawyer's OR triple Ah Or vincent
man or whoever who decided what five minutes had to
be taken out of the version nine days after it.
Came out that needs to. Be solved somebody out there
wants to take on. That assignment let.

Speaker 4 (02:24:01):
Me know that sounds Like a sean radickin gig.

Speaker 6 (02:24:04):
Right there, all right.

Speaker 1 (02:24:09):
Let's uh, all right we had we had a we
had on, a collar actually had two more colors on
hold and we. Lost, them johnny.

Speaker 4 (02:24:15):
Because we have.

Speaker 3 (02:24:16):
More stories let, me, yeah yeah let's do.

Speaker 1 (02:24:17):
More stories.

Speaker 22 (02:24:20):
Here, we.

Speaker 17 (02:24:20):
Go.

Speaker 1 (02:24:21):
Yep uh And, and johnny just so, YOU know i
have about ten to fifteen MINUTES before I do i
wrap up. The show we can't do like a two.
Hour one don't know what your time for, straints are
but hit the best stories and Uh and i'll try
to stay out of. Your way and let's let's get some.

Speaker 4 (02:24:37):
More in. WE'RE fine i don't have, that. Many. Okay
cool The, first, WrestleMania okay The, FIRST WrestleMania, i called this.
IS interesting I asked roddy. About like he questioned me
on the size of. My shirt you get these let's
size shirts you WEAR and i, WAS like i wear,

(02:24:58):
a SMALL like, I like i want my stuff. To
fit and he said The, first WrestleMania he wore a
SIZE small t shirt And hult cogan wore a, size
medium and they stretched them further than any shirt could
possibly ever be stretched perfectly because they wanted to show
how muscular. They, WERE wow i think, That's interesting like can, you,

(02:25:23):
imagine like like What Was haul Cogan Event hull coogan
is probably pretty close to to to three. Hundred. Pounds,
yeah so and.

Speaker 6 (02:25:33):
He was wearing a SIZE medium. T, shirt.

Speaker 1 (02:25:37):
YEAH well i think the more muscular, you, are ironically
THE smaller t shirts you would want to wear to
show off, your muscles. You know, and, yeah yeah so
that was.

Speaker 4 (02:25:45):
A gimmick So now roddy wore a Small and Hogan
wore hogan. War, MEDIUM also i don't know It was
WrestleMania one, or two BUT, MISTER t I actually i
think It was. Wrestlmania one they went over, the Match
and Roddy and orndorf were not very nice TO mister

(02:26:11):
t going over, the match AND and i believe It
was roddy that that basically told him that he would.
Hurt him, and uh AND mister t attempted, to leave
and they had they had to close the gate from
from letting, him leave and then they brought everybody back
in the room And and roddy, you, know, said uh
we're we're will, be okay just you do what you're supposed.

Speaker 1 (02:26:34):
To. Do, Hmmm yeah SO.

Speaker 4 (02:26:42):
Supposedly t tried to leave because Like like roddy enjoyed stuff.
LIKE that, i mean like, you know the the Problem
with roddy Like like i'm A Huge andy, Coffin fan like,
he's like like my my top two Heroes Are roddy
Fier And. Andy COUFMAN and i tried To ask Hi
About andy coffin and and the story they Got Of,
andy KAUFFMAN like i don't. Believe whatsoever so that's like

(02:27:04):
he he said that, You Know andy kauffin saw him
and and and and that's when he did the uh
he started changing, his comedy you know because like like
that night He and i'm just like the timing doesn't
really work out With everything, i've read But, Any coffin

(02:27:25):
so that that that that. Bothered me so A story
i have from From From, disco inferno which which Is
Like i've i've kind of been in the dressing room
on a, similar Circumstance so I'd like i'd like to. Share, this,
So Uh scott hall is supposed To Face roddy Piper
on nitro AND and I Think scott hall is supposed to

(02:27:50):
go over And so roddy was not happy, of course
And so Scott loved roddy and you still still loves,
and lungs you. Know whatever And so scott was just,
Like like i'm gonna give this. Guy everything It's It's,
roddy piper, you know like, YOU know i just wanted
to go over the. Match Whatever and disco was Was

(02:28:12):
was hall's. Running body so so that they went to
his room and they knocked him the Door and, ronnie,
Goes yeah i'm gonna need a. Few, minutes guys, you
know could just come. Back anyway so they went back
like an hour later and, they're, like hey can we
go to. THE mat i still need a few, more man,
you know just come. Out anyway so, THIS one, i mean,
you know they got to the building and like noon

(02:28:34):
and you know this one on, like six, you know
eight Hours and ronnie went and talk to And and
roddy And and rdny did. THE scene i saw him.
Do this roddy would close that door, AND goause i
got HIM where i. Want him now.

Speaker 5 (02:28:48):
They want TO tie.

Speaker 4 (02:28:51):
I got it RIGHT where i. Want him And.

Speaker 3 (02:28:54):
For roddy it was.

Speaker 4 (02:28:55):
So insane roddy UNDERSTOOD that reps was, a work but
he thought everything else was. A, shoot, yes yes, you
know and And All scott hall wanted to do let's
figure out a way to do the Match where roddy
looked great and and and put him Over and i'm

(02:29:20):
Not gonna i'm not gonna talk. To Him and i'm
just like that is so, like that there's so mind
boggling that. SOMEONE'S mind, i mean because even the next up,
you have, you did, you know there's like they want
they want to talk to me about about. The promoy, i'm,
like well they probably have some interesting points they want you.

Speaker 1 (02:30:55):

big MATCH, with gdp he liked to to send over
the entire match to. His opponent and and sometimes it

(02:32:06):
would be more sued towards.

Speaker 6 (02:32:08):
D d p looking good and and and other. Times
not i'm guessing most of the time it was MORE,
towards gdp. You KNOW and, I love i love he's
a great guy and AND and i do, his yoga
so so there, you go d D c dp yoga.

Speaker 4 (02:32:24):
Dot com, but, he uh he facts over TO like,
i guess, you know people are, Using Faxes and roddy
had a fact and he asked for, his number and
he sent over the, entire match and uh And And
roddy roddy right remembers. THIS story, i BELIEVE because i
mean just the details that. They're right so, he says ore,

(02:32:45):
the match And and, roddy, goes uh, he goes, he
goes so he faxes over. The match, he goes, He goes,
he goes first you come to, the RING then i
come to. The ring how the.

Speaker 3 (02:32:54):
Hell do you think we're gonna have a MATCH.

Speaker 4 (02:32:56):
If i don't come to. The RING so i took
the piece, of paper or all the pieces. OF paper
i balled, him up throw the. Trash can.

Speaker 5 (02:33:04):
He.

Speaker 4 (02:33:04):
Was insulted wrote first you come to, the RING that,
i come and and it wasn't about. About order it
was just the fact that he. Did that dallas took
the time, to, write first you come to.

Speaker 6 (02:33:20):
The ring.

Speaker 4 (02:33:21):
That's Funny.

Speaker 1 (02:33:24):
So johnny as a person had how much of his
personality and who? He WAS and i know you, met him,
you know in his, late forties, you know when you
were around in the most what how different was A
sober roddy if there is such, a Thing versus roddy?
Not sober and and did what do you think was

(02:33:47):
it just his childhood that drove him to always be
or so often be in kind of an altered state
of mind and in a hyperactive state or laid back,
marijuana state whatever it? Was like what were just psychoanalyze
what is it That made roddy who? He was and
and could he have been? Somebody different and he conducted
himself differently or at? The core is this the only

(02:34:09):
person you think he? COULD be.

Speaker 4 (02:34:12):
I, DON'T know. I DON'T i I think i Think
he's he's so special and so different than than anyone you'll.
Ever meet, i'm LIKE as, i said my my my
two Heroes Are andy Kaufman And. Roddie piper and, YOU
know i Never Met. Andy kaufman and And but i've,
You Know i've i've read tons, about Him and i've

(02:34:33):
watched tons, about HIM and i understand that he was
he was a. Different breed AND and I Think roddy
piper is. RIGHT there. I DON'T i i THINK his
I mean i'm not trying to be philosophical, or ANYTHING
but i think his path. Was chosen, and UH and

(02:34:54):
i think he did at like like, you know like
uh Once again saturday's, made event they did, the Uh
The frank. Sinatra tribute, MY way i think he. DID
it i don't think.

Speaker 1 (02:35:08):
There are.

Speaker 4 (02:35:08):
Different circumstances he would have willed himself to be something
so incredible that that that that we we we couldn't. Contain,
IT so, i mean That's just i've never met anyone,
like That like robert. TOOMBS ever i mean he WAS

(02:35:28):
just i mean like and. AND honest i mean like
like current hitting was special and uh uh Road ware hawk.
WAS special i mean like these these are like those
are two of the most Amazing people i've. Ever met,
You Know, PAUL hayman I mean i think there's there's
something really Incredible About. Paul Hayman But, Roddy piper i've

(02:35:50):
never met anyone that amazing. IN life i mean it's
like he's. Just there, So No shaan wuman. Is right
he he was the greatest heel of. ALL time, i mean,
like real, real quick like there was there was a
young guy that that wanted To Rate Roddy trading train as,

(02:36:12):
a wrestler And and, roddy, goes, uh hes, you know
you want me to shame, Your kid and, he goes
let me see. Your punches, he goes, my punches let
me see. Your punches he has a little, fair play
has better punches. Than me, i'm like, shut, up yes
let me see. Your PUNCHES and i, do, like uh
your your, you know you know. YOU'RE wrestling I do bobby.
Eating punches, YOU know i slapped the ARM when I when,
I PUNCHED but i don't even like to do THAT

(02:36:33):
because i just do four arm SHIVERS because i think
you're more believable as.

Speaker 6 (02:36:37):
A manager that's just. Me anyway so, he's like let
me see your PUNCH and i was just.

Speaker 4 (02:36:41):
Like no, He's like i'm not, Asking you i'm.

Speaker 6 (02:36:43):

Not Asking. I'm tanya i'm like. All right so he.
Punches me he busts my top lip and bottom lip,
wide open blood's poor. And down did it? Look GOOD and, i,

(02:37:05):
said yeah look it's. Pretty.

Speaker 1 (02:37:07):
Believable, YEAH yeah i think that's. What's, ASINA yeah i
think that's what's for. That casina we Could. Go monday
did it? Look, good johnny did? You met you alluded
to the. Car accident we went, over that, you know

(02:37:28):
previous time you were on, the show but you had
a falling Out. With. Roddy uh but it's, talk about,
you know to get in all the details on the
on the crash with our limited. Time here but but
but what what how did your Relationship with roddy continue
and and change over the last.

Speaker 3 (02:37:45):
FOURTEEN years, I mean i uh.

Speaker 4 (02:37:50):
He uh he fled the scene of the crime when
he grabbed the wheel and hit and hit another car
and a telephone pole and uh. He uh he left
in the car a huge KNIFE that i believe was
given to Him by Billy, white WOLF and i think

(02:38:13):
he later became Another, rest like was that Was that
sheik had on? Al casey Was that Billy? White, wolf, Yeah,
YES no i don't know anyway that that was one
of one of his Old, friend anyway he left that
knife in, the car and SO so i met, with him,
you know like even though there was was ill feeling,
BY me I don't i don't know. About him there

(02:38:35):
WAS several i met with HIM and i. GAVE it
i can't believe he gave me back.

Speaker 3 (02:38:40):
This KNIFE and i was, just.

Speaker 4 (02:38:42):
Like Because you're i'm, just like, Look man i'm, just like,
You know i'm kind of pissed about the situation because,
YOU know i kind of left me high, and dry,
just like but, you know You're Still roddy piper and,
you know and, you know AND and i don't know if,
YOU know i like, YOU know i guess we're, still friend, you.
Know whatever whatever the, Circumstances were i'm, Just like, i'm like,

(02:39:05):
YOU know.

Speaker 6 (02:39:05):
I knew this meant coming.

Speaker 4 (02:39:06):
To you, i'm like oh, my god, YOU know i
want you to.

Speaker 6 (02:39:08):
Have it and, so ANYWAY so i gave it, to him,
and uh and he.

Speaker 4 (02:39:13):
Was he was like. Really emotional he's just, like wow.
You KNOW and i, was, like yeah so stop TELLING
people i try to.

Speaker 5 (02:39:22):
Kill, you.

Speaker 4 (02:39:25):
Yeah and and so.

Speaker 6 (02:39:27):
And and and the LAST time i saw him was
At The Mad.

Speaker 4 (02:39:29):
Monster PARTY like i was filming a Scene For Toxic.
Too too it's a movie coming out in about. Five
months it features Me And jake roberts and The Book
You Will Imagine me valiant a bunch of. Other people
it's the documentary whatever Happened to me and the Mob Boyfriend. Toxic,
AVENGER anyway i played the. Bad guy so we were
there filming Scenes In Mad monster PARTY and i had

(02:39:52):
at a girl that was WAS doing i was about
to do a, scene with and we were killing time
while they were staging an area in, the hotel AND
so i, WAS like i was Like.

Speaker 5 (02:40:02):
Hot rod, he's Like, oh god lets you how's?

Speaker 4 (02:40:05):
It going and so he, hugged ME and i WAS
just i, was.

Speaker 6 (02:40:07):
Like hey line doing a picture And he he's all
absolutely anything. For you and then and right right as
we're taking, THE.

Speaker 4 (02:40:14):
Picture i was, just, LIKE so i, was like would
you take a picture with someone that tried to? Kill
YOU because i WOULDN'T because i love, you brother and
and so and and, you know and and and the
girl taking the picture she, was like oh, my god
like how is it gonna?

Speaker 1 (02:40:32):
Work?

Speaker 4 (02:40:33):
Out, yeah so, BUT no i MEAN LIKE i, i
like even after the THE, on tna like, you know
the best best an sports show, ever whatever teena special
thing we did, he uh he's frayed me with the
with the, fire extinguisher, you know kind of kind of

(02:40:54):
a play On the morton. Downy thing and uh and
and afterwards he came up and.

Speaker 6 (02:40:59):
He, WAS so i mean like our relationship.

Speaker 4 (02:41:01):
Was fine it was JUST like i, DON'T know, I
like I.

Speaker 1 (02:41:07):
Didn't did he remember and appreciate the time that you
guys spent together or were you part of a big
blur that is? His?

Speaker 4 (02:41:16):
Past, no, no no, he, remembered like now we we had.
A SHOOT as, i SAID there's, I MEAN I i
i searched my soul for for for five, SIX stories
i could tell, uh no we we. We were we
were Living In.

Speaker 6 (02:41:34):
Los angeles uh and and uh life was life. WAS
incredible i mean like it was like you know it
It was studio fifty.

Speaker 4 (02:41:45):
Four REINVENTED so i mean, so yeah, so no it's
like despite, you know all the things that can. Cause,
blurs no. He remembered we had an. AMAZING time i
mean because. HE had i mean, you know LIKE as,
I said i was the only personal system that it
wasn't wearing a. Fanny PACK like i could get him
into the, cool clubs. You, know like so we we

(02:42:06):
had an, amazing time like like we were out at
uh uh are you you know The Group. Steel Panther
jason powell, loves them and SO. Do i we went
to Go See steel panther one Night And heidi klomb
has the booth right, beside Us And heidi kloalk he,
was like oh, My God, roddy viper, he go here's.

Speaker 6 (02:42:23):
This CHECK.

Speaker 4 (02:42:26):
So i mean like and, you know people loved him
and and and he had like he had Never, seen
hollywood like Really. SEEN hollywood, i mean his, his manager
the last person he Represented Before roddy Piper Was. Dana,
PLATO yeah i mean like he hadn't he hadn't really.
SEEN all, i mean like you know other than an

(02:42:47):
occasional red carpet that that's someone that you know that
happened to run into him and extend the. Olive branch
he just really, you know he was really out of
the loop, as far, you know as being, you know.
Cool stuff so sometimes for him Was was jerry, you
know Was The palms Restaurant Or. Jerry kelly that's the
only two places he Knew. In hollywood, so yeah, so

(02:43:08):
NO as, i SAID HE i i just remember, you
know the just this this this amazing heel captivating character.

Speaker 6 (02:43:19):
And and and, you know and and and and and
and it still existed in two thousand, and one and
UH and i saw a glimmer of it. LAST year,
i mean like he, he was, you know he he
had a reason to have the problems that, he had
and and, AND honestly i think he was just on

(02:43:39):
cruise control with. THAT stuff, I mean i.

Speaker 4 (02:43:41):
Don't think it was it was it was in any
way to. Be abusive it was just you just have,
no LIKE as, I said i'm not gonna go. INTO
it i have no desire going. To it, you know
it was just a long history of what he us
prescribed to do and and. AND it I don't i

(02:44:04):
don't think it's fair that that that someone thought that
was a. GOOD idea, i mean like if it's if
he had quit everything cold cold turkey and it might have.
Killed him it might like, WHO knows i mean, like
that it's just it's it's just very no no one
could could really. Understand it i'm not go, into it

(02:44:27):
but it's just like. You would you would be shocked like,
you would you would you would drop, the phone drop
your ear piece. Or, whatever well.

Speaker 1 (02:44:35):

(02:45:20):
FOR you a lot of people have, talked about and
this happens when. People die what a great guy. HE
was i met him and he. Was great he was,
A friend he treated. Everyone great he was one of
the most wonderful people in. The world how true was
That with roddy when the cameras weren't on with because
we had people call up, with stories, you Know, on
tuesday we had a caller call up to talk about,

(02:45:41):
you know, so yeah so what What was What was
roddy like when nobody else? Was watching because, that's off,
you know that's a big way to define who, somebody is,
you know is what do you do when? Nobody's watching
and not that literally. Nobody's watching, you know he's interacting,
with people but it's not, for cameras it's not. For

(02:46:02):
show How did roddy deal with people who recognized him
as you, experienced it especially that year you were you were.

Speaker 4 (02:46:08):
With him he. Was nervous uh uh. He did he didn't,
LIKE uh i, mean, like uh he, always cordial like,
you Know as jim mentioned and as the, callers mentioned,
you know he always does the sir and gentleman and.
All that AND as, i mentioned if he called you
champ and that he really thought you were, sweetly retarded

(02:46:32):
that's not. A joke.

Speaker 8 (02:46:34):
But, uh no.

Speaker 4 (02:46:35):
He, didn't uh he was very, very guarded uh because,
you know he has he had, been stabbed he had,
been shot and and, you know and AND and i
don't know if it was the fear of the old
fans showing up that that hadn't hadn't heard that he
turned a good guy and in nineteen nine year.

Speaker 6 (02:46:53):
Or whatever but he very, he uh he.

Speaker 4 (02:46:57):
Just uh but but his appreciation for for like, you
know we go to autograph signings and and and the
line would be like, you know, they're like, you know
it's it's uh it's. Thirty minutes, you know we're signed
like this before the comic cons and, all that and,
they're like, you know it's thirty. Minutes signing and he
would show up it and we would honestly be there
for an hour and forty five minutes every time minimum

(02:47:20):
and HE would, i mean he had the option, to
leave and he. Never, LEFT yeah i mean he HE
loved i mean like he couldn't. BELIEVE it i mean
like like he's looking, At me he's, just.

Speaker 5 (02:47:30):
Like what Are whole?

Speaker 4 (02:47:32):
Hogan's LINES like i don't know.

Speaker 3 (02:47:36):
For an hour and forty five MINUTES and i was a.

Speaker 4 (02:47:38):
Bad, Guy YEAH and i would, Tell him i'm, just
like they're not as long. As yours he guess THAT'S
what i wanted. TO hear, i mean like and, you
know and and you see that that old hot rod
that that you know that that interviewed Himself On Roddie
Roddy Piper's, Greatest Hits Hope.

Speaker 6 (02:47:54):
Collins me a, Home VIDEO like i mean he. LOVED
that i mean like It's.

Speaker 4 (02:47:59):
That oh his admiration for himself was was was through.
The roof but he was actually just just just floored.
Every TIME so, I mean i don't know if it,
Ever wane i'm imagining. IT didn't, i mean he was
just so so.

Speaker 1 (02:48:19):
Just.

Speaker 4 (02:48:19):
SO appreciative, i mean like, you know and and for,
the record he was he was he was a pretty
other Than The. Adrian donasciet he's a, pretty crappy. Good guy, yeah,
Yeah yeah, So, there johnny.

Speaker 1 (02:48:36):
A great great. Show here we're at the ninety minute
mark and so we need to wrap. Up HERE but,
i mean it's just you are a versatile and uh
and good guest to be able To Tell rodney paper stories.
Like this if you've Enjoyed hearing johnny on the show
and you missed him a few weeks back talking About,
TOUGH enough i encourage you to check that. Show out
johnny's experience in reality television and knowledge of wrestling is

(02:49:01):
a rather, unique overlay and it led to some really
good insights on wdwe's, production techniques uh and and just
interpreting what we see on camera versus HOW reality tv is.
PUT together i definitely recommend checking. That out if you're
not a go to pwd torchlivecast. Dot com they can
scroll back several weeks to. That show that's one way to.

(02:49:24):
Do it if YOU'RE a. Vip member on the, right
sidebar there's the drop menu that has the Po D
Torch Live cast, interviews option and you can slack that
and you can easily find all of our interviews since
We Started interview Friday And interview Thursday but johnny, is there,
you know about a dozen a dozen, shows down and
that's another way to. Do IT but i really encourage
people to do It to martin's.

Speaker 4 (02:49:45):
Guess on what happened on two weeks Ago On tough
enough and and he's right on, the money yes, he
Was and Bruce and bruce failed miserably trying to, comprehend
it like we've talked since he. Did.

Speaker 1 (02:50:01):
It, now YEAH even i get, You know i'll. Give
HIM even i, got, confused fella trying to, you know
Talk to todd about it and explain It. To BRUCE
even i. GOT twisted, I mean i know, it's there
but it is the format of that show is so
convoluted that then when you add a conspiracy, to it
it is kind of hard to put. The Words but
todd did do it, with success and yes he was

(02:50:22):
right now.

Speaker 4 (02:50:23):
IT'S hard, i mean like the biggest thing was it
was out a Character for mata to CALL out zs when,
he did and that was that was a production cue
and and and and if they were to do the
double the, double save then it would ruin what is?

Speaker 6 (02:50:41):
Tough enough and tough Enough is? America decide and uh
and and so they thought they did enough with the
edit and everything else that that that was the move
and uh and and now we had someone else use.
Their save so.

Speaker 4 (02:50:58):
We're we're really screwed on this on these final final,
two people because you can't do a double a double
stay to keep whoever should. BE there, i, MEAN like
I think josh should, probably win, AND uh i think
the Girl, probably gigi and uh and we probably we're

(02:51:19):
probably gonna get Stuck with Zz and sarah just because.
My guests, ONCE again i don't Follow their. TWITTER feeds
i think they're just just just, sitting there not learning
how to rustle interacting with Fans.
