(00:25):
everyone today, it's just me. The other two aren't here
to join me because it's just hard. Carol and Kevin
are busy people and it's just hard to coordinate getting
together and recording, as I think everyone else out there
can appreciate. But this gives me an opportunity to talk
(00:45):
about one of my favorite things, watches and movies. The
first one I'll talk about is an interesting one because
I think it's going to become a hot topic really
soon if you watch also watch a lot of YouTube videos,
which I assure you do. Mark from Long Island was
(01:08):
talking about how he's putting out a shark watch and
he brought it up because it was something he was developing,
I believe, he said, for a few years. And lo
and behold, he got wind of Siko releasing shark theme
(01:32):
more specifically at Jaws themed watch for this summer, and
that's to commemorate the nineteen seventy five movie Jaws. So
I guess we'll be coming up to the fifty year anniversary,
so Siko will be releasing something and whatever Mark from
Long Island does, I think it'll be a fantastic watch.
(01:54):
He's made some great watches, beautifully well designed. I'm excited
to see them. What Seiko does is beautiful and I
can't wait to see what they do with Jaws.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Now.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
I do want to point out they have several watches
already that I have a bit of a shark theme.
I think, if I'm not misicking to a Save the
Great White Shark, and I remember on the dial somewhere
you could see like the fin of a shark popping
out of the dial somewhere. And highly recommend you guys
(02:30):
google it. It's a beautiful watch. I was tempted one
point to buy that. Please Google, go check it out.
I'm sure you can find them on Chrono twenty four.
I'm sure you can maybe find them in secondhand markets,
and I'm sure you can find them on other places
where you find watches as well. But getting back to
(02:51):
the movie Jaws nineteen seventy five, Richard Dreyfus was wearing
an Alsta and more specifically, it was the all Star
natal scaff super Automatic, a watch company that started in
America didn't do well with the quartz crisis. They've hung
(03:15):
on for a while, but eventually they had to close
their doors and you will see Alsta around still to
this day, new Alstars. In fact, because Alsta was purchased
brought back to life by Glasgow watch collector, I guess
it's safe to say it's a Scottish company now and
(03:38):
Alstas are now available to purchase. But it has to
be known that the Alsta super Automatic was in Jaws,
the nineteen seventy five movie. And if you watch the movie,
the watch actually suits Richard Dreyfuss. And that's the thing.
I like how movies and their characters will fit a watch.
(04:03):
And sometimes I especially love when the watch itself is
part of the plot or sets the environment or the atmosphere.
And I also love how a watch will date a movie. Now,
if you do like sharks and watches, it's worth mentioning
also the movie Meg. In the movie Meg, you'll see
(04:28):
the actors the characters all wearing wristwatches and again each
riskwatch will kind of reflect the personality and the character
of the movie. And I think they did a great job,
and it's probably lost on most of the viewers. But again,
(04:50):
if your watch fanatic, you'll clearly see how important those
watches are. And I love that detail that the directors
put into the movie. Now I'm not sure if they
did that for Meg two. I did watch Meg two.
I just can't remember if they did the same. It
was a good movie too, but I think, like everything else,
(05:13):
it's the first movie that leaves a stronger impression. But
saying that, my next talking point, it's Beverly Hill Cops too,
And in this movie, one of the watches that left
an impression is by the main antagonists. And Maxwell Dent
(05:34):
was wearing a role like Daytona, but clearly towards the
end of the movie, he's at the racetrack, he checks
the time, and he's wearing a Protect Philippe quartz and
it suits the era of the movie, a late eighties,
early nineties. I believe you know. It suits the character,
it suits the fact that he's wealthy at a racetrack
(05:57):
wearing a Protect Philip is really cool. It's nice to
see old Protect Philips in movies because even back then,
like you could see that people really like Protect Philip
and it spoke to a certain clientele. The female antagonists
played by Brigitte Nielsen, she wore and this is a
(06:21):
bit of a controversy because I try to google it
and people were there's a small debate. Someone thought maybe
a Porsche design watch, or it possibly was a tag Hoyer. Again,
we're talking about criminals that are very precise. If you
(06:41):
watch the movie, you'll understand so time is crucial for them.
And it's a black chornograph and I again suits the
villainous vibe. It's pretty cool. Highly recommend watching that and
join the debate. When you google these movies and what
watches were worn, it's funny. You'll see a thread sometimes
(07:04):
of people debating it. A movie I like to revisit
over and over again was Planes, Trains and Automobile. I
watched that just because someone suggested that John Hughes movie,
and that one popped up in my head and I
thought worth a rewatch one day, and I did. And
(07:25):
it's worthy to note that Steve Martin wore a piage
and it's more specifically a page Polo and eighteen K
being nineteen eighty seven gold and quartz. And the debate
with that threat is was it a twenty seven millimeter
(07:47):
or thirty one millimeter? Who knows? But Steve Martin did
use the page to barter. Yeah, it wasn't just a watch.
It was value and clearly something to barter with. His
co star, John Candy wore a cassio, which, again, when
(08:09):
you look at the personalities in this movie and the background,
it was perfect that Steve Martin wore page and John
Candy wore at cassio. More specifically, it was the cassio
A one five nine WA dash N one And again,
if you watch the movie or a fandom movie, you'll
understand why the casio's perfect for him. And then I
(08:35):
just wanted to talk about maybe a personal story. I
had a debate with someone at a watch store, a salesperson,
about a particular watch that Matthew McConaughey wore in the
movie How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days. So
(08:57):
this movie was partially sponsored by Winston Jewelers, So I
don't know if that means if other products or all
products were supplied by Winston Jewelers shops or does that
mean you have to cover certain brands that Winston Jewelers
don't want. I don't know, but this is the debate.
(09:18):
If you look at Matthew McConaughey's watch, he's wearing a
square watch dial, and people right away are saying tag Hoyer,
tag Hoyer, tag Hoyer. And I was a firm believer
in that too, but many times I paused it and
the brand is not shown. It's actually covered or omitted somehow.
(09:45):
But if you watch the rest of the cast, you'll see,
for example, Kate Hudson, she's wearing a small square watch.
It looks like a Cartier, and everyone's screaming Cartier, Cartier, Cartier.
And at first I thought so too. But then you
get to one of the co stars, one of Matthew
(10:08):
McConaughey's friends, and he's wearing rectangular, old fashioned styled digital watch,
and right away you'll say, Pulsar Omega. Makes sense Again,
this being a movie budget of several million, why not
give him a Pulsar Omega? Why not give Kate Hudson
(10:30):
a Cartier and Matthew McConaughey a tag Oyer. But if
you look at the Hamilton lineup. Hamilton has a jazz
Master square dial, several jazz Master square dials, especially when
you go back to when that film was being made,
(10:52):
several that look exactly like a Tagoyer Monaco. And if
you go back to that time as well, Hamilton American
Classic had the ladies watch that look just like Kate
Hudson's Cartier the Tank. To be more specific, they look identical.
(11:16):
And we all know that Hamilton does an American Classic
Digital the PSR and LO and holds on that guy's wrist.
So I had a debate with this salesperson and I
got to say, I think I'm right. If you look
at the Internet, they will say Omega, Pulsar, tag Hoyer,
(11:41):
tag Hoyer, Monaco, Cartier Tank, But if you look at
the movie, the names are removed. And I think, seeing
how much Hamilton is involved with a lot of the movies,
I think the watching were a square Jazz Master Square, Hamilton,
(12:04):
American Classic and the Classic Digital PSR. My opinion, I
would love to hear what you guys say, and I
really believe they are Hamilton, not just because of this movie,
because Hamilton are in a lot of movies, clearly within
the cell of the Murph, but the Men in Black
(12:25):
series they use Venturas. What else I'm trying to think.
The most recent Matrix movie had a Hamilton watch. In June,
they did a very cool collaboration with the Ventura watch.
It's very nice. I mean, the list goes on, it
(12:46):
really does. And the Ventura a watch alone and its
role in movies. Like I said, Men in Black, the
Venturer first showed up. I think when the very first
electrical watch showed up, it was on Elvis Presley's wrist
(13:08):
in a movie called Blue Hawaii. So you know, I
really think not push this point too much, but if
anyone watches How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days,
those are Hamilton's I would love to know your feedback.
I am tempted to attach our old episode where I
(13:32):
did movies. You know what, I will attach one of
our older episodes if you want to give it to
listen again. It's really fun. I mean, those were the
days where it was pandemic and Kevin and I had
lots of time. I will attach it. You guys, listen
to it if you want. If not, you can end
the recording now. I don't want to bore everyone when
(13:53):
it's one person. It can be really tough and boring
to listen. To keep listening if you want to hear
that earlier episod. So it's a great one.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
Bye for now, Hey, watch bands, it's another week. Thanks
for coming back. We have a few movies and watchers
we're going to talk about.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
And Kevin, how did you pick your movies?
Speaker 2 (14:19):
Hey, Dave, you're gonna be happy to know that I
did not pick one movie with a rolex? Aren't you surprised?
Speaker 1 (14:28):
I'm so surprised.
Speaker 2 (14:30):
I knew you would be.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
I'm shocked.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
I'm just pointing that out. Yeah, you're gonna fall down.
I'm pointing that out because I knew you would make
a point of it. Wow, Because there are so many
references to rolelexes me almost every iconic movie, some bad
guy or some good guys wearing a date jest or
(14:55):
a day date. They don't need more shameless plugs, right right,
too easy?
Speaker 1 (15:02):
Okay, So how did you pick your movies?
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Man? I picked Aliens, Yes, Aliens, Sigonia Weaver, Predator, and
one of my favorites, Keanu Reeves, john Wick Series. How
about you?
Speaker 1 (15:16):
But why did you pick those movies?
Speaker 2 (15:19):
Well? Why did I pick those two. Well, I'm from
the eighties. We grew up in the eighties. These two
movies were amazing. They're iconic movies.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
Okay. I picked movies that the watch has not only
got some screen time, they were essential to understanding that
the character or the plot of the movie. So I
picked Doctor Strange. I know you love that movie. I
know you love Marvel Stranger than fiction and pulp fiction.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
Yes, oh, another one of my favorites. I was gonna
pick that, but I knew you were going to do it, So.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
Why don't you start off with one movie, one watch.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
These movies are not just iconic, as you say, but
the watches themselves are pretty much part of the movie.
They've become synonymous with the movie. My first movie, Aliens
Segonia Weaver were's seiko designed by none other than Jigario.
And this now is known as the Ripley, not a Saiko,
(16:21):
and the black version is known as the Bishop. And
they're actually quite affordable because didn't they have a reissue
on this couple of years.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
Ago they had a reissue very nice looking watches. They
are really cool. I actually love watches with nicknames, especially
nicknames that the company didn't come out with, but the
fans have come out with. The Fans of this watch
have called it Ripley.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
This is the Siko Giegaro seven twenty eight dash seven thousand.
For those who want the actual reference to the watch,
if you guys know which watch we're talking about. It
has the push buttons on the outside of the case. Ye,
that are vertical. I'm on the right hand side. Push
(17:08):
buttons one top and one bottom. Yeah, pretty cool looking watch.
I think it's about four hundred and fifty bucks if
we had to buy one right now, which is very affordable.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
Yeah, that's a great watch. Great movie.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
Did you see Aliens one? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (17:22):
Alien Aliens scared the pants off me.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
Man a little bit darker. This one has aliens of course,
and a lot of guns.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
Do you like the second one better? Right?
Speaker 2 (17:35):
The second one has way more action. James Cameron did
an amazing job. It's quotable and unforgettable. I guess you
could say, definitely love the action. I like guns, and
there's a lot of guns and bullets in this movie.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
The second movie definitely felt more like an action I
enjoyed it, but in terms of groundbreaking, I give it
to Alien. It just reshaped a space horror sci fi
Laid Down the Blueprints?
Speaker 2 (18:05):
So What's Your First One?
Speaker 1 (18:07):
Nineteen ninety four, pulp fiction by Quentin Tarantino. This was
a movie that I felt the watch played a big
part in plot and also understanding one of the characters.
A watch was handed down by Captain Nunes, who is
a friend of a father of the main character, Butch
(18:29):
Coolidge played by Bruce Willis. And this watch, it's branded
as a Lancet. It's an offshoot of a Swiss company,
the Langendorf Watch Company, and they produced watches for the world.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
I don't remember this watch per se, but I do
remember the movie.
Speaker 1 (18:49):
You guys watched the movie. The watch was hidden where
the sun don't shine in the prisoners camp, and it
was passed down to Bruce Willis and later lost by
his girlfriend, and Bruce Willis has to go back and
look for which unravels a scene of events.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
So when you say the sun don't shine, what are
you really saying? Where was the watch? I was just
gonna say, is that somewhere you would hide a watch.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
I don't recommend hiding watches where the sun don't shine.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
Probably wouldn't stay in there very long. To be honest
with you, one of my favorite movies of all time.
That movie, for movie's sake, has probably the most quotable lines.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
Hey man. Because of that movie. When I was in France,
I specifically went to McDonald's to get a Laroyal with cheese. So, dude,
what's your second movie?
Speaker 2 (19:47):
All right? So for my next movie, the movie in
question is Predator, the original Predator from nineteen eighty seven,
starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Who doesn't love this movie? Directed by
Jo McTiernan in the Theater June twelfth, nineteen eighty seven,
starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Bill Duke, and Jesse the
(20:08):
Body Ventura Jesse the Body In this movie, as you
all know, it's full on action and they fight aliens,
which is kind of strange. But there's a lot of
guns and AMMO in this movie, as with most Arnie movies,
but I think this one had more than usual. The
(20:29):
Predator watch, Arnie was wearing the Saiko H five five eight,
which is a military type diving watch with both analog
and digital display. He wore this quite a bit and
it's now known as the Arnie It's a famous Arnie
watch when someone says the Siko Arnie, there's only one
(20:50):
watch that they're referencing. In terms of pricing, it's around
four hundred dollars. I think they reissued this not too
long ago and very affordable. Cheap, yeah, and easy to
track down.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
Great watch again, another watch that was nicknamed by the
fans and not the company initially. It just shows me
how much watches have been embedded into our culture. And
the reissue looks amazing. The reissue is solar too, which
makes it a great grabbing goal.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
Definitely easy wearing watch. I don't know how durable it is,
but for daily it looks rough and tumble. They could
use it outdoors, hiking, biking, whatever the case may be.
Some swimming, and I think it'd be fine.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
Your favorite quote from that movie.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
There aren't too many really funny quotes, but I think
the most quotable line from this movie is if it bleeds,
we can kill it.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
That was the quote I was thinking of, too. Yeah,
I guess is that you Arnold.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
Yeah, it's pretty sad. Let's hear it again again. How
about how about this stick around?
Speaker 1 (22:04):
That's better?
Speaker 2 (22:05):
I want to say I'll be back, but that's a
different movie.
Speaker 1 (22:08):
That's a different one.
Speaker 2 (22:09):
Yeah, we all know what that movie's from. Yeah, my
Rnie impersonation is pretty sad. It's best I can do.
Why don't you try it? Give it a go, No,
I'll pass, all right.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
So the second movie I have chosen is Stranger than
Fiction two thousand and six and it features Will Ferrell
and his watch, the Timex iron Man Dual Tech T
five six, three seven to one. Again, I chose a
movie that the watch was important for the plot as
(22:44):
well as understanding the character. And in this movie, actually
you get to see the ind the glow function.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
Yeah, let's talk about the end of glow.
Speaker 1 (22:53):
I believe Timex created in the glow in the eighties
but introduced it to the watch in nineteen ninety two.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
Sounds about right. Early nineties.
Speaker 1 (23:02):
It was a technology not only did you see in
watches everywhere at that time, people fell in love with
ind theglow. It was a technology that across the culture.
Indiglo started showing up in toys. Also in the car
market you can get aftermarket tachometers and speedometers with the
Indiglo Blue. It captured the world, and that's all thanks
(23:24):
to a watch company TIMEX.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
Now, I think they hit their mark in the nineties
that that's probably their heyday era, and the Indiglow's definitely
one of those watches. The iron Man series, Triathlon series,
they probably sold millions of those countless.
Speaker 1 (23:41):
But about six years back, maybe seven years back, I
emailed Times and see if they had any of these
watches lying around, and they did not, unfortunately, and it
made me go to eBay. There's a few pieces that
were around one hundred dollar mark and up to the
five hundred dollar mark, and currently if you go to eBay,
(24:05):
they're about one hundred and fifty to five hundred dollars
mark for a used watch.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
Did you say five hundred dollars? That's that's quite a
hafty game, considering they're like fifty bucks or eighty bucks, right. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (24:20):
I remember seeing them in a store when the movie
came out, and I was like, should I buy it?
Should I buy it? And it was at the time
seventy bucks? Yeah, sixty nine ninety nine. Your third watch, dude?
Speaker 2 (24:32):
All right? So the third movie that I picked is
from the John Wick series John Wick three Parabellum excellent
and it features excellent movie. If he features Carl F.
Boucher and his Manuro Auto date in the movie. As
we all know, Kenu Reees is the hitman, bad guy
(24:54):
or good guy. Rather this watch from Boucher. I think
he might have even spawn answered the movie because he
only wears this watch.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
Actually, there's a fight scene where there's a billboard of
the watch in the background the entire time.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
Yeah. Yeah, So he's definitely sponsoring the movie, which is great.
It's a great watch. It's about twenty five hundred dollars.
It is a Caliber nineteen sixty five twenty five jewels
thirty eight millimeter case. It's not a super fancy watch.
But if you want a movie watch that's a somewhat
medium tier watch, Bouscher has it for you. You can
(25:35):
wear Keanu's movie watch.
Speaker 1 (25:37):
Nice looking watch, and he said twenty five hundred.
Speaker 2 (25:40):
Yeah, they're about twenty five hundred dollars.
Speaker 1 (25:42):
Wow. So for my third movie, I am going to
talk about Doctor Strange twenty sixteen by Marvel. It's a
great movie. And in this movie, Cumberbatch has a JLC
Master Ultra thin perpetual mm hmm. It's not necessarily important
(26:03):
for the plot, but it definitely helps you understand his character.
I mean, in the beginning of the movie, he has
several watches, but what's important is his character places a
high value on material goods, and later in the movie
he tries to trade it for money, and he doesn't
understand why other people don't see the value in his watch.
(26:28):
It's kind of like all us watch collectors, right, no
one gets what we're doing.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
I'm just gonna say this is a great pick because
I love this watch and it fits perfectly with his
character with the moon phase. It has lots of complications,
it's perfect for time travel. I think this is a
perpetual calendar, so good it makes perfect sense.
Speaker 1 (26:49):
Good point. That was a good point.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
And I think in the beginning of the movie, when
he's a doctor, when we first see this watch, it's
on a watchwinder, so there's some foreshadowing on what's going
to happen later on in his life.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
Oo deep thoughts from Kevin. All right, listeners, So these
are the movies and watches that I hope you guys
check out, and you guys probably already know very well.
Speaker 2 (27:14):
Yeah, let us know if you liked any of these,
or if you have any.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
Of these, or if you have other movies that we
should take a look at. DM Kevin at watch Fanatics
