Speaker 1 (00:02):
You're listening to watch Fanatics podcasts. If you'd like, you
can follow me David at watch Fanatic David on Instagram.
Please subscribe and feel free to leave us a five
star review on wherever you download your podcasts, and most importantly,
we hope you enjoy the show. Today, I want to

(00:26):
talk about the twenty twenty five time Piece World Awards,
specifically the winners. But before I do so, I want
to talk about the Toronto time Piece Show now. Jason Hutton,
who organizes the Toronto Timepiece Show and the time Piece
World Awards Show, really did an amazing job. He really

(00:49):
hit it out of the ballpark. The Toronto time Piece
Show last year was amazing. This year he leveled up.
It was phenomenal. The venue for this was the Median
Art Center. The staff, they were amazing. And when I
mean staff, I mean security, the people taking a registration,

(01:12):
the servers at the bartenders, I mean everyone was friendly,
very professional, added to the elegance of the show. It
was just brilliant. The Meridian Art Center was a perfect
backdrop for the Toronto time Piece Show and I gotta
say it puts Toronto on the horology map around the world.

(01:36):
People have to pay attention. People who would come from
around the world. I think would be very pleased with
the show. The brands, as I said earlier in the
last episode, they're also from around the world, from Europe,
from Asia, from North America, basically around the world. And

(01:59):
anyone from the world that came to the show would
be pleasantly surprised. I'm sure, and I hope all these
vendors do come back next year. I didn't get to
spend as much time as I wanted to with each
and every one of them, so if they come back,
I want to spend more time with them. We might
just need a bigger building, because not only do I

(02:21):
see people wanting to come back, but I would want
to see I suspect there's going to be other brands
that also want to join the Toronto time Peace Show.
Now let's get to the awards. There were panelists, and
maybe I'll do another episode because I met some of
the panelists and their involvement with the time Piece World

(02:45):
Awards should not be taken lightly or skimmed over, because
this show was amazing. Hosted by Colin Mockery, a Canadian
comedian slash actor personality probably best known for whose line
is it? Anyways? But he was also on several shows.

(03:07):
I've seen him on many shows, and right away, if
he's hosting an awards show, you know the show is
going to be an event that is not to be
taken lightly. So before I get into the actual time pieces,
let's talk about the judges. What I like to do

(03:29):
and what my hosts like to do. We like to
weigh in our opinions on certain watches and feel they
might be the best of this, or they might be
the worst of this, or who knows, You're not going
to get this. At the time Piece World Awards, there
were judges, and there are seven judges, and I'll go

(03:50):
through that right now. Kathleen McGivney, the CEO of Red
Bar Group, Justin mastein Frost Sharp Magazine, Bradley Taylor, who's
a watchmaker, Alexandre Beauregard, the founder of Beauregard Watches, Elizabeth Deer,

(04:14):
journalist slash author, James Stacey from Houdinki, Robert jann Border
from Fratello, and these are names that you've probably seen
and heard in the watch industry. They are people that
have their finger on the pulse of the watch World,
so they know watches and the public's opinions, and they

(04:40):
know the ins and outs of industry. These are people
that watches aren't not just passion, but it's something in
their professional life as well. They have a career in watches.
So these judges are like I said, They're not someone
hosting a podcast. They're not your friends at a bar.

(05:04):
These people they have knowledge, They have insight that we
don't have access to. They have a level expertise that
might go beyond the hobbyist level which a lot of
us are, and they have their reputation and career at stake.
So making a right choice is important when it comes

(05:27):
to judging a Timepiece show. Originally I started describing each
of the category award winners and I realized that I
wasn't doing you any favors. A picture is worth a
thousand words, and what I would recommend everyone to do
is go to Timepieceworld dot com and you can get

(05:51):
up and close with the award winners, but also get
some information on the judges, the jury, the committee that
was also involved with the twenty twenty five Timepiece World Awards,
and more importantly, with these watches on the page you
can see them side by side. I also encourage you

(06:12):
to go to each of the watches and their websites
and get to know the brand, because some incredible brands.
So what I'll do is I'll talk about the category,
the criteria, and I'll mention the watch and they'll give

(06:32):
a quick quick description. If you want the statistics, you
want the price, go to the website. I cannot describe
these beautiful watches with justice. The best thing and fair
thing to do go to a show and hold them
in your hands. But if you can't, the next best
thing go to the websites. See these watches for yourself.

(06:53):
They are stunning. So let's go to the first category.
It is the time only category, and the criteria is
this watches with only two or three hands bearing exclusively
analog time indications hours, minute, seconds, sub slash small seconds

(07:14):
function is also acceptable in this category. And the winner
of this category goes to Isotope Watches, more specifically the
Mercury Shadow. And that's the time only and I gotta
tell you it is elegance, beautiful, simple. It's a gray

(07:35):
dial round case on a leather, gray leather strap. I
would classify as a address watch. The second category is
a chronog category and the criteria for that is mechanical
watches comprising at least one chronograph indication. Additional indications and

(07:57):
or complications are admissible, and the winner goes to chronograph
telemeter from Angelus and again I'll be really brief, go
check them out place round watchcase. Very classy, I would say,
also gray dial with gold in disease and gold hands

(08:22):
and it's a single pusher subdials at nine o'clock and
three o'clock. Very elegant. I was not expecting this in
the category, but seeing it here as a winner, I
totally get it. I appreciate it. It's beautiful. I definitely can
see it also looking good on several different straps. Next

(08:46):
category is this sports category, and the criteria is this
watches linked to the world of sports whose functions, materials
and design are suited to physical exercise. The award goes
too ors Equis Great Barrier REEF four Limited Edition, and

(09:06):
it's based on the Aqueous Date. If you're not familiar
with it, it has the date window at six o'clock.
I really enjoy that about the ors Aquis Date. A
beautiful gradient dial. It goes from aquad blue from the
top and as you get to the bottom, dark dark blue,
which mimics the actual ocean. The bezel is gray, which

(09:30):
I really do appreciate dark gray. If you're not familiar
with the ors line, go to their website. It's a
beautiful watch. I don't think anyone would disagree with the
winner of this one. Our next category is the GMT
slash World Time Watches. The criteria watches that display hours,

(09:54):
minute seconds and have the ability to show time in
another time zone or multiple time zones through mechanical function notes.
A twelve hour rotating bezil does not qualify for this category,
and the ward goes to the sub two point fifty
t GMT professional from Doxa. And what I like about

(10:18):
Doxa what you might like about Doxa. It's on that
orange dial that I've seen many of them on and
interesting cushion case, beads of rice, bracelet and when I
think GMT, this Doxa is one I would not picture.

(10:38):
I mean, I think of so many other gmts that
I've seen, and they're all worthy. And this is where
the judges is really important. They are looking for something
the average watch fan probably overlooks and knowing that Doxa
won this award makes me appreciate Doxa more. I mean,
I've liked Doxa, but now it's like like, hey, you're

(11:01):
on my radar. I'm gonna check you out. Let's move
on and we move on to tool watches, and the
criteria is this watches designed to be utilized within a
specific profession or provide timekeeping within more extreme or challenging
environments and professional roles. This may include fields, but not

(11:23):
limited to, military and law enforcement professions, diving, emergency service, aviation, medicine,
and any challenging environment where time piece can support their
wearer's respective role. The award goes to ADAC SS nav
D Pilots Automatic from the Marathon Watch Company. And just

(11:49):
so you guys know, if you haven't known this, Adanac
is Canada backwards and it's a beautiful white doll, black numbers,
also on a cushion case. And of course if you're
a fan at Tritium, you will like this watch. You'll
not just like it, you'll love this watch. One of

(12:09):
my favorites from Marathon Watch Company. And I hope you
all like it too, because this is a watch I
want to see on more people's wrists. Now we move
on to innovative complications, and the criteria is this watches
that are remarkable in terms of their mechanical creativity and complexity.

(12:32):
These watches may feature all kinds of classic and or
innovative complications and indications. Watches may exhibit a combination of
novel or remarkable mechanical construction, as well as innovative means
of display and measurement of time within the overall design
of the time piece. This may also include striking or

(12:54):
any other acoustic function, a special or novel escapement, or
comprom another original and or exceptional or logical concept. Drum roll.
This goes to Fears, specifically the Brunswick forty point five
jump Our Edwardian addition, and if you don't know Fears,

(13:20):
they have a beautiful font for their jumping hour. I'll
give a brief description of this watch. They have jumping
hour at twelve o'clock position and a floading. I guess
what I would say the subdial. I say it's a
subdial because it's not a small subdial and it's not

(13:45):
a full dial. It's a medium sized dial in the
center and the hand indicates its minutes beautiful. I love
the crown work on this watch. It's gorgeous. And that's
the Fears Brunswick forty point five jump Our Edwardian Edition.

(14:05):
Next category is Exceptional Materials criteria for this watches utilizing
novel or innovative usage of materials in the overall design
and construction of the watch. This may include commonly used
materials presented or finished in a unique manner, or novel
materials not commonly see in time piece construction and design.

(14:28):
The Exceptional Materials goes to Goos and the model that
won it is the Falero Sword Midnight Blue, and for
people who want to know more about it, go to
their website because I can't describe this dial. Damask is

(14:49):
steel blue, but the shades of the different colors in it,
it's breathtaking. Actually a company from Sweden, and what I
like about them is it's an unusual partnership between a
master watchmaker I think his name is Patrick Vorgan and

(15:11):
a master bladesmith Johann Gastafson. And I gotta tell you
this Scandinavian design is just ough breathtaking and when you
do check it out, pay close attention to the hands,
the hour hand and a minute hand. I love what
they've done. It's elegant, yet it shows off some shape

(15:34):
and craftmanship. And even the case, what the case is?
The texture on the case is really nice. Our next
category is Jewelry and Artistic craft. The criteria is watches
demonstrating exceptional mastery of the art of jewelry and gem setting,
including the choice of stumps. Timepieces may also include within

(15:57):
the design creative execution of enameling, skeletonization, lackering, engraving, and
gulosh And no surprise here. As I looked over the
brands coming to Toronto, and I'm not alone when I
say this. I've spoken to a few people. This one

(16:18):
just captures your eyes. And the winner is the sun
My frosted leaf green from Awake. The sun My utilizes
a laquering technique from Vietnam that in itself is unique
because you hear lackering from Japan a lot, but not

(16:39):
from Vietnam. And I don't know the subtle differences between
the two, but clearly on this Awake watch it works.
It works. The green is so vivid, it's just going
to draw everyone's attention. It's it's done so tasteful, it's
rich and vivid green, and being a lacquering technique, I

(17:03):
believe each doll will be slightly different because it's not
machine made. It's gonna be like a fingerprint, you know,
it's gonna have its unique identity. Our next category is foundation,
and the criteria here is watches with a retail price
equal to or under two thousand, five hundred US dollars

(17:27):
or equivalent. And the winner here goes to the studio Underdog,
the zero two series Gimblet. If you don't know whose
studio underdog is, you will enjoy their website because these guys,
these watches are so playful, they're so unique, and for

(17:52):
the most part, I don't think general public would see
watches like this. You've probably seen watches like this on Instagram.
But it is a wonderful lime dial, clear, very eligible.
It looks like the zero two series Gimblet is in

(18:12):
collaboration with Fears, and that's not too surprising because I
look at the fonta on this dial and I could
see I could see the collaboration with Fears with this.
The next category is exception. The criteria here are watches
with a retail price between two thousand and five hundred

(18:35):
and one US dollars to fifteen thousand US dollars or equivalent.
And the winner here is Kadoki three flakes gold and
appropriate name. Yes, right off the bat half the dial
looks like it's gold. Very unique. I would not be

(18:56):
surprised if this watch could also have won the Innovative Complications.
I can't even describe it. The hands are blue, the
dial it reminds me of a speedometer. Very unique. You
guys got to check it out. I can't even describe it.

(19:16):
I'm not even gonna no, don't even listen to me.
I probably have confused you on what this watch is.
It's beautiful. Go to the website. Next category is Pinnacle
and these are watches with a retail price of fifteen
thousand US dollars or equivalent and upwards and it goes

(19:41):
to Vienna Halter. The Art Deco Metropolis and Art Deco
it is. You look at this and it feels like
it comes straight out of the Art Deco era, and
it looks from the numbering from from the case design itself,

(20:02):
how it incorporates the strap very Art Deco. The middle
and indices are on the it looks like on the
exterior of the case as well. The center is its
handmade sunburst from rose gold, and like those indices on
the case are rose gold. Pretty much a blue and

(20:25):
gray dial with white numbering charcoal hands. If you were
in art school and someone said design an art deco watch,
this is what it would look like. And I'll be honest,
I've never seen a van Ay Halter before. This so
really nice to see. And the next category I want

(20:48):
to talk about. It's interesting. It goes to the People's
Choice winner. And what's interesting about People's Choice winner this
year is there was a tie. So let's go to
the first watch. It's from Isotope Watches. It's a chronograph
Moonshot to Ramers. I gotta say this might change how

(21:14):
people will start viewing pornographs because the subdials, it's very unique.
It's again something I'm not going to pretend to describe.
The subdials are just so unique. And it has blue
and the main dial which is like black on the outside,

(21:36):
but as you work your way in it fades to
like a bronze. The bezel is a tack meter as
well as measurements for pulsations, a black case on a
blue rubber strap. It's a stunner. I love the hands
as well. The hands are that bronze gold and it

(22:00):
works together very well. It catches your eyes and it's
something that you don't see often. I mean, I've never
seen anything like this before. I am impressed and tied
with the Christopher Ward the C twelve Local Pasadena blue

(22:21):
blue dial. I love the movement on this thing. Now,
I'm not going to attempt to describe the dial other
than it's blue. You're going to see some of the
movement in the front of the dial. You're going to
see the dial itself. What I like about some of

(22:42):
the Christopher Ward watches is that you're not just getting
the time. You're seeing some movement. You're seeing the complication.
You're seeing what people want to see in a clear
case back. But on the face of the watch, I
can't describe this watch. You have to go to Chris
for Awards website or go to timepieceworld dot com to

(23:04):
see this watch. You won't be disappointed. Now as people's
choice winners Isotope Watches or Christopher Ward, I see why
it's a tie. I mean, right now, if someone asks
me which of these two watches I would like to own,
I would be torn. This is a real problem here.
I don't know which one I would choose over the other.

(23:27):
I see it being a tie. I totally get it.
They weren't being nice. People were torn, and I get
it one is so different from the other. Yet you
can't say which one deserves a spot on your wrist
because they both do. Am torn here. I was gonna
come in here hopefully break this tie, but I can't,

(23:51):
and I would love to know if you guys can
break the tie, which one would you like? The Isotope
Watches Moonshots or the Christopher Ward C twelve Local. I
am torn here. I honestly see why there's a tie.
I'm just torn. They're both beautiful. You guys, go to

(24:13):
timepeaceworld dot com yourself see if you agree with the judges. Also,
I would love to hear which one you take really
for the People's Choice Awards. I want to know what
you guys think. I would also like to know what
you think of Awake Goos. Those two really surprise me.

(24:34):
I want you to also comment whether if you like
the Art Deco Metropolis, the Pinnacle award winner. But what
I also want to hear from you guys is what
you think about Foundation and Exception. With Pinnacle watches over
fifteen thousand USD, you can go nuts. There is so

(24:56):
much to choose for your mind, your imagination, your wa
it can go crazy, there's no limits. But what I
like about Foundation watches with a retail price under two thousand,
five hundred US dollars or equivalent, it puts you on
a strict criteria, strict budget. I want to know what

(25:17):
you guys think, did they make a right choice with
the Foundation? Also with Exception two thousand, five hundred and
one USD to fifteen thousand USD, it can get your
mind spinning, like what would you like to see for
Exception winner? And I want to know what you guys think.
But overall, time Piece World Awards it was a hit. Please.

(25:41):
I'd like to see everyone there next year. Twenty twenty
six is going to be fantastic. Now they're going to
Vancouver soon, so people in Vancouver get ready, get ready
for your minds to be blown. I gotta tell you
the show was fantastic. I think it'll make you proud
to be a watch fat I think I'll end it here.

(26:03):
I hope you guys enjoyed the show. Let's talk real soon.
