I think they're all corrupt. I think they're all dirty.
I think he was maybe maybe he is the.

Most but there's different levels of corruption.

Speaker 3 (25:17):
But boy, the senators, the congressman, Isabelle, I think, like
you find, eighty out of the one hundred are taking bribes.
That's how bad I really think it is in the
United States House and the United States Senate nowadays.

Speaker 1 (25:29):
These people are all on the take from somebody.

Speaker 4 (25:34):
I don't disagree with you.

Speaker 5 (25:35):
But the reason that Bob Menendez stands as such an
icon to corruption is because during his trial, the jury
was given the.

Speaker 4 (25:46):
Gold bars to hole.

Speaker 5 (25:48):
So Bob Menendez accepted gold bars from the people that
he was doing favors for a bunch of businessmen in
New Jersey, one of whom was tied to the Egyptian government.
And so I think that really sealed his fate when
the prosecutor gave each member of the jury gold.

Speaker 4 (26:08):
Bars to actually hold.

Speaker 5 (26:10):
I mean, in addition to gold bars, they found like
four hundred and fifty thousand dollars in bills and stuffed
into the shoes of you know, his closet in New Jersey.
So you couldn't say that he was not corrupt.

Speaker 1 (26:25):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, he was very correct.

Speaker 3 (26:26):
The only thing I'm arguing is, well, I wonder if
we looked in the closets of every senator, if they
all have.

Speaker 1 (26:32):
Gold bars in cash, that's the only thing.

Speaker 3 (26:34):
That's the only thing I'm wondering, or certainly offshore accounts.
Most of them are dumb enough to keep it in
their house, but they got an offshore accounts somewhere where
the money gets wired in, you know.

Speaker 5 (26:44):
But remember the dude, the congressman in the South who
had like one hundred thousand dollars in his freezer.

Speaker 4 (26:53):
I forget his name right now, but it's it's unbelievable.

Speaker 1 (26:57):
It is.

Speaker 5 (26:57):
It's all I do with the Post cover corruption and
money laundering through.

Speaker 4 (27:01):
Your busy dat uh, through.

Speaker 5 (27:04):
Five oh one c threes, through through through nonprofits, and yeah,
I've been doing it. I mean, I was the first
to cover black lives matters, you know, all of the
money that that went astray, and I you know, I
was called a white supremacist journalist for that, but I
was right because afterwards everybody, you know, it took them.

(27:26):
It took other reporters about two years to sort of
figure it out. But afterwards, uh, I mean, nobody remembered
that I'd done the first stories. But whatever, I had
the satisfaction knowing that I'm just working with the public record,
and that's what the public record said.

Speaker 1 (27:41):
So Isabelle, you have the best job. You'll never be
out of a job. If you cover corruption in politics,
You'll be forever.

Speaker 4 (27:50):
I know.

Speaker 1 (27:51):
It's it's truly amazing.

Speaker 5 (27:52):
And I lived in I uh was a correspondent in
Africa and and Brazil before I came to the United States,
and I thought that was corrupt.

Speaker 4 (28:02):
But then I got to New York.

Speaker 5 (28:03):
And I was like, whoa, the corruption here is insane.

Speaker 1 (28:07):
Yes, I grew up in New York. By the way,
I grew up in a mafia neighborood.

Speaker 3 (28:10):
I'm the only Jewish kid from a mafia neighborhood on
the Bronx borderline, so believe.

Speaker 1 (28:15):
And the neighborhood was half mafia and half cops.

Speaker 3 (28:17):
Everyone's either cop or a gangster. And believe me, they
were all tied together. I saw that corruption for the day.
I was old enough to understand what was going on,
probably from the age of ten on. I said, nothing
gets done without a payoff. Nothing in New York, you know.
So you talk about Brazil, it's unbelievable. You know, I
feel sorry for It's not in the notes that we
were going to talk about. But the lady who married

(28:39):
gold Bar Bob Menendez, right, she married him, and I
probably shouldn't fee bad because she probably married him for
his power and his money. But I mean, she really
thought she was having, you know, a dream life.

Speaker 1 (28:49):
Right.

Speaker 3 (28:50):
She gets married to a US senator and the next
thing you know, he's using her as the go between,
like Hunter Biden for Joe, and she gets convicted and
she's facing a long time in prison.

Speaker 5 (29:00):
Right, Yeah, she's going to be sentenced, She's going to
be sentenced in September. But he threw her under the bus.
And this is something that Bob has done during his
whole career. He threw his mentor in the nineteen eighties.
He threw his mentor, Bill Musto, who was the Democratic
Party boss in Union City, New Jersey. He threw him

(29:23):
under the bus during during his corruption trial. And so
this is like a pattern of behavior because they he
and his wife are both convicted of the same things.
They're about to do the trial together, and he separates
the trial so that he can so that he can
possibly win and and blame her for all of the corruption.

Speaker 1 (29:44):
Yeah, I'm sure she.

Speaker 4 (29:47):
Who wanted the Mercedes.

Speaker 3 (29:51):
She's no brain surgeon, but she really got the She
became the patsy in this whole thing, right, I mean
that's kind of the way I see her.

Speaker 4 (29:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (29:59):
Yeah, and she's gonna as you said, she's probably going
to get right now, what I heard from a source
is that her new set of lawyers are trying to
vacate her conviction based on the fact that they didn't
that the old set of lawyers did not have enough
time to prepare for her trial, which is kind of
ridiculous because she kept putting it off, putting it off.

(30:22):
She does she she was suffering from breast cancer, so
you feel kind of sorry for her, especially after Bob
blamed everything on her and never once accompanied her part
of the trial.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (30:36):
And so when she was found guilty, then what happened
to his trial? Did he then plead at that point?
I'm not sure about the details. What happened to him head.

Speaker 5 (30:47):
His trial was first he was convicted of all sixteen
counts of.

Speaker 4 (30:54):
You know, accepting.

Speaker 5 (30:55):
Bribes, conspiring to work as a foreign agent for Egypt
and her, and then he was sentenced to eleven years
in prison. And he just started serving that sentence in
the summer. So he's in prison and she's about waiting
sentenced on September fifteen.

Speaker 1 (31:14):
Got it? What's you're plugged into this whole thing? What's
the sense?

Speaker 3 (31:18):
Is she going to get a little less than him
or is she going to get the book thrown at her?

Speaker 5 (31:24):
I think she's going to get the book thrown at
her because I don't know if you remember, but one
of the reasons that she needed a new Mercedes and
this doesn't really figure into the trial, but it's like
a moral situation. One of the reasons she needed a
new car was is she crashed her old car and
she crashed into a pedestrian and killed him in New
Jersey and kind of, you know, walked away from that,

(31:47):
and everybody forgotten about that until all of this corruption
came out into the open and then we realize, oh, well,
she killed this forty something man who was crossing the street,
and nobody, you know, never ever, nobody had heard of it.
The family didn't get any kind of compensation, so she
didn't get in trouble at all. The police didn't didn't

(32:09):
do a breathalyzer, didn't do anything. She just called a
friend who sent in a retired cop to talk her.

Speaker 4 (32:16):
Out of the situation. And it's very well documented.

Speaker 1 (32:19):
Wow, I don't know, you know now, I don't feel
sorry for guilty. Now, I don't feel sorry for so much.
I didn't even know about that. Say, you don't hear
about these things.

Speaker 3 (32:27):
Only someone who's intricately tied to the details of the
case like you would know that, you know, especially in
New York. I'm all the way to Las Vegas. I
didn't I knew the general idea that he had gold
and cash in his closet, and and she was the wife,
and she was kind of a conduit like Hunter is
for Joe Biden.

Speaker 1 (32:42):

Wanted to hear about this Kushogi guy. In twenty eighteen,
Koushogi was poisoned, hacked into dozens of pieces, and snuck
out of the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. What did Bob
Menendez have to do with that one? He was covering
it up. Why was he doing that because they were
paying him to make sure it never became a big story,
I guess.

Speaker 4 (37:47):
So. Jamal Koshogi was a Saudi journalist.

Speaker 5 (37:52):
He was a columnist for the Washington Post, and he
had been very instrumental in raising awareness of the Arab Spring.

Speaker 4 (38:00):
About all of the.

Speaker 5 (38:03):
Uh all of the protests that were going on across
the Middle East.

Speaker 4 (38:08):
He goes into.

Speaker 5 (38:10):
Just and just to add a little bit of interest,
his his uncle was Adnan Kashogi, who was a very
big arms merchant from Saudi Arabia.

Speaker 4 (38:23):
Also at one time, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (38:25):
He was also at one time friends with Osama bin Laden,
although it ended who was also Saudi, although their friendship
had ended. When you know, Osamo is on the wrong
side of history. So he goes to the he goes
to the Saudi consulate and Issembole to get some paperwork done.

(38:47):
He's married, he has a wife in Virginia. He's on
this tour of Europe to promote the Arab Spring. He
goes in and he never comes out. What happens is
that he's poisoned and then hacked into you know, you know,
hundreds of pieces.

Speaker 4 (39:09):
I mean, he's murdered and.

Speaker 5 (39:12):
The Egyptian intelligence provided the drugs to murder him. Now,
remember the Arab Spring is a big deal in Egypt.
The protests are happening there, so Egypt has a real
incentive to get rid of this guy who's a mouthpiece
for all of these protesters. So Bob Menendez at that time,

(39:35):
and this was something that that briefly came out of
his trial. But Jamal Kashogi was never mentioned in the
in the trial transcripts, there were only clues as to
as to who he was, and everybody nobody really paid attention.
And I started to pay attention to it when I
was doing research for my book. So Bob Menendez at

(39:58):
that time in octob Over of twenty eighteen, when Jamal
Kachogi walks into that consulate, Bob Menendez is being paid
gold bars through a go between of Egyptian intelligence. After
Kashogi dies, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, of which Bob

(40:20):
Menendez is.

Speaker 4 (40:23):
The head of minority leader.

Speaker 5 (40:27):
And then when Biden comes to takes over, the Egyptians
want like three hundred million dollars worth of military equipment
armaments that have been held up because of their bad
human rights record.

Speaker 4 (40:45):
So get another example of them getting out right, so right.

Speaker 5 (40:50):
So they go to Bob through his wife and through
the Egyptian businessman in New Jersey who's providing Bob with
all this cash and gold bars, and they.

Speaker 4 (41:01):
Say, hey, you know, we need your help.

Speaker 5 (41:04):
In setting up for these questions that the Senate Foreign
Relations Committee is going to ask us, can you give
us some pointers? So Bob gives them pointers and helps
them cover up what what to the world is one
of the most egregious murders of a reporter. I mean
it was a columns, but but still and and to

(41:28):
this day, like that whole you know scenario has never
really been explained. And as a result of that, Bob
pins all of the blame for this on Saudi Arabia
and they.

Paying them.

Speaker 5 (41:50):
So it was but but that is but that is
what the past bought at the time.

So it was that scenario that everybody believed.

And now when we we've gone through his trial and
I've gone through the transcripts and really looked at this
with my co writer Thomas Anderson, I.

Mean we both found like, this is this is crazy.

Speaker 5 (42:11):
He he lied, he because of corruption in order to
create something that's not true.

Speaker 4 (42:18):
And then you had all these geopolitical issues as a
result of that. So Egypt gets their weapons, right, you know,
in years later.

Speaker 3 (42:27):
So and even when your book comes out, still years later,
it's the blow is softened. In other words, at the time,
they would have been the pariah of the world. But
now it's been years and no one will ever really
make a big deal of it. The murder was long
ago and nobody cares anymore. That's what they count on.
They count on time, you know, erasing all the anger.
And they got their way because Bob Menendez. How do
