Speaker 3 (00:36):
Good Friday morning, everyone, This is Del Cooper coming to
you love from the Jarrett Construction Studios right on tom
right on budget visit Jarrett dash Construction dot com, proud
sponsors of the studios here in Charleston for five ADWCHS.
I'm Del Cooper one more day in the Captain's seat
until Dave Allen comes back on Monday. Assuming he comes back.

Speaker 4 (00:57):
You know Dave.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Dave on his destination for his vacation has found a
run of really really good food, and if you know Dave,
that means he's having a little hard time convincing himself
to come back. He submitted a form on how to
do remote broadcasts from his location now, so he wouldn't
have to leave, So hopefully Dave ends up being back
here on Monday.

Speaker 4 (01:19):
I'm just kidding.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
As far as I know, Dave, we'll be back here
on Monday for five eighty Love. But I'm here today.
We're going to have pretty much a normal Friday show
coming up here.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
In just a moment.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Angie gillen Water is going to join us from the
Canal Charleston Humane Association, and we're going to talk about
Copper this morning. Copper not not the metal, but we're
actually going to be talking about a little doggie named Copper,
very sweet, good boy. You can go to our Facebook
page at five ADWHSWHS Network and take a look at
that picture right now, and that will be the dog

(01:48):
will be discussing coming up here in just a couple
of minutes. We're also going to be joined more towards
the bottom of the hour about twenty past or a
little after by West Virginia State University President Erica Cage,
and we're going to talk about basically it's beginning of
the school the school year, incoming fresh and are coming
in and West Virginia State University of course is bringing

(02:11):
in classes as well. All kinds of things that are
going over there. The President and the First Lady helped
students move in just this past week. State Stride is
coming up next week, so we're going to talk about
those things with West Virginia State University. And I'm going
to remind you a little bit that has to do
with West Virginia State sports. If you didn't know, West
Virginia State football and basketball are going to be on
our sister station ninety eight one O seven to three
the Beat. You'll be able to find West Virginia State

(02:33):
sports on there throughout the year. They have a play
by play announcer that works here. You might have heard
anyone in the morning news. The last couple of weeks,
Daniel Woods will be doing the play by play. Tom Bragg,
familiar here on the stations, will be doing the color
commentary for West Virginia State football that will be coming
up at the end of this month. So I'm going
to talk a little bit about that with President Cage

(02:54):
when he comes in, and much of other things that
are going on at West Virginia State University as.

Speaker 4 (03:00):
To start for this school year.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Also, before we wrap up here today, I had a
guest that was going to come in here to do
some live music for us. That was my original plan
and unfortunately last night that fell through for me, and
scrambling around a little bit this morning, I was not
able to get someone else to come in.

Speaker 4 (03:15):
To do music.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
So what I want to do is yesterday on Hotline
and if you don't listen to the afternoon show, I
thought this would be a great opportunity to give you
an idea of what we do sometimes on that afternoon
show with Dave Weekly and me. Yesterday Dave had the
opportunity to talk to David Mayfield. I hate to introduce
another David into this row of David's that we have
on the program, but Dave Allen is off, so Dave

(03:36):
David Mayfield can step in. David Mayfield, a singer and
songwriter on his own, has been with tons of bands.
He has played with the Avid Brothers, Mumford and Sons.
Now he has the David Mayfield Jukebox Experience. He's the
host of Mountain Stage. Kathy Mateya and Larry Gross are
not hosting this weekend at the Culture's Inn here in Charleston. Instead,
It's going to be It's going to be David Mayfield

(03:57):
and we had the opportunity to interview him yesterday on
hotline Dave Weekly did and as well as preview this
upcoming show on Saturday and play a couple clips of
the songs. So since I couldn't bring you live music
this morning, that's what I wanted to do. I'm going
to replay that interview. It's only about ten minutes long,
but it gives you a nice snapshot of what's going
to be happening this weekend when it comes to Mountain Stage.
There's still tickets available, so I thought that might be

(04:17):
something interesting for us to get to. So without further ado, though,
we have some we have a pooch that we're hoping
to adopt. So we want to talk to Angie killen
Water now from the Canal Charleston Humane Association.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
Angie, good morning. How you doing this morning?

Speaker 5 (04:30):
I'm doing really good.

Speaker 4 (04:31):
That is fantastic.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
It's Friday, so that always takes it up a couple
and then naches as far as feeling good.

Speaker 5 (04:37):
Usually absolutely Yeah. Every week we're shooting for Friday.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
That's pretty much everybody ex there for those I guess
it works through the weekend. Dave sent me a picture
of the dog this morning. It's over on our Facebook
page at five adwchs. This cute little puppy. His name
is Copper. What can you tell us about Copper?

Speaker 5 (04:57):
So Copper. If you're a hound blover, Copper is the
dog for you. I did tell Dave last night you
will definitely hear Copper before you see him at our shelter.
He loves to just go to our playards and how
but he's great with other dogs, He's great with kids.
He actually had a little playdate with one of our
fosters and her very young son yesterday and did fabulous

(05:19):
with him. But he is still a puppy himself. He's
less than a year old and he's probably about sixty
ish pounds, so he's a very big boy. But he's
definitely worth adopting. He's also sponsored by Ellen's ice Creams
and so zero dollars to take.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Home and that sounds fantastic. What can you tell me
about his personality? Pretty playful? And I know you said
he's a he's a hound, so obviously you want to
hear him pretty playful around other animals, around kids.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
How does how does he shape up with that?

Speaker 5 (05:53):
So he's got what we call a social butterfly personality
in the shelter. He does not have any weird quirks,
like he's afraid of men or you know, people with
hats on, anything like that. He is pretty social with
everyone he meets. And in our playyards he doesn't really
necessarily play with the other dogs, but he does go
out there and he definitely howls a lot.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
Well, that's there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. In these
sweet little dogs. They need to be adopted, and you said,
and being sponsored by Ellen's ice Cream, So that means
it's basically a free adoption, Is that right?

Speaker 5 (06:27):
Yeah? Pretty much. You may have to pay for city
or county pigs if you live in the city of
Charleston or in Knawk County, but other than that, he
is zero dollars to take home. Will neuter him, vaccinate him,
be worm deeply, and micro chip him for pretty much
free for you man.

Speaker 4 (06:45):
That is that is great news.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
And so if folks have any questions, they can give
you guys a call. That's three zero four three four
two fifteen seventy six. You can email info at adopti
pet Charleston dot com.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
If you want to.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
You can just come by and take a look too, right,
and maybe you know, if it's not Copper, maybe it's
somebody else, So another poocher.

Speaker 4 (07:02):
Kitty or something.

Speaker 5 (07:03):
Absolutely, I can only feature one pet on these days,
and we have about four hundred to choose from. I
definitely employ you to come up and visit us as well.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
Oh my goodness, that's that's terrible. Have did you guys
hear anything. I've just got a couple of texts that
came in and some people were concerned about a news
story about a kitty that was thrown off the Patrick's
Street bridge.

Speaker 4 (07:25):
Did you guys hear anything about that?

Speaker 5 (07:27):
Yes, so we are. We were informed that the person
would be bringing the cat to us, so you know,
we got our medical team ready and everything. We haven't
got the kitten yet, but we are preparing if we do.
We've got our medical team and you know, the X
ray machine fired up to make sure everything's ready to
roll if he does show up. But we have not

(07:48):
got that kitten yet. I'm assuming they may be found
another home for it, but we're prepared if we do
get that.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
Kitten, well, we are.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
We do hope that, we do hope that the kiddy's okay,
and maybe found a new home then, but today it's
all about Copper. Copper is a sponsored dopat. That means
that if Copper, who is a cute a cute boy.
You can find his picture over at five ADWCCHS on Facebook,
WCCHS Network.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
Take a look at Copper.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
Contact the Human Association, go down there, whatever you need
to do, but let's try to get some of these
pets matched up with owners who need them. Angie, thank
you so much for your time this morning. As always,
we're trying to do you try to do good missions
there and we're trying to help out as much as possible.

Speaker 4 (08:26):
Hopefully were going to get Copper a home.

Speaker 5 (08:28):
So we appreciate that and hopefully next week I will
be able to say Copper is adopted.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
That would be a great news indeed, Anngie, thank you
so much for your time this morning, and have a
great weekend. We'll talk to you next week, no problem,
you too, Thank you very much. That is Auntie Gillenwater.
She was in contact with us from the Canal Charleston
Humane Association. Online adopts Charleston dot com. Adopt Charleston dot
com if you want to go in line and take
a look. You can also email them info at adopt
Charleston dot com in the phone number three zero four
three four two fifteen seventy six. Three zero four three

(08:55):
four two fifteen seventy six. We're gonna give away a
pair of Reds tickets a little bit later on in
the show today. Basically, all that I need you to
do is give me a call and share a Red's memory,
a favorite Reds memory or Reds memory you want to
tell me about. Maybe it's one from the radio. I
would love that if you were listening to five Adwhs
like I was growing up as a kid back in
the early eighties and all the way through my childhood,

(09:18):
big fan of the Reds, and a lot of memories
on the radio there. If you have one that you
want to share. I just want to have a pair
of tickets I want to give away for the Reds
hosting the Mets on Friday night, September fifth. This could
be shaping up to be a showdown for a wild
card position of things relatively remain homeostatus from where they
are right now, so this might be a good opportunity

(09:38):
for you to go see the Reds in a meaningful
game in September.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
Huh. Not such a bad deal. Huh.

Speaker 3 (09:44):
So later on in the program, all I need you
to do is the first person to give me a
call and share a red story, you'll win a couple
tickets to go see the Cincinnati Reds. So that's coming up.
Hopefully you'll enjoy that and coming up next, looking forward
to this conversation because we can get a little bit
of a deep dive with Westerginie State University President Erica Cage.
Of course, the new school year is starting, all kinds
of things going over going on over at West Virginia

I don't know about you, I am. It's been kind
of a busy week. I love being on the I
love talking to folks here on the radio, but a
lot of this week I've done three shows, the Expert Show,
this show, and the afternoon show with Dave Weekly, So

(13:07):
I'm ready to give the pipes a little bit of
a rest coming up this weekend. But I've been looking
forward to this conversation since Ron Hughes helped me set
it up. West Virginia State University President Eric Cage is
joining me this morning, and man, new school year is
about to start at overt wes Virginia State University President Cage,
how you doing this morning?

Speaker 4 (13:23):
Thanks for coming in.

Speaker 10 (13:24):
I'm doing great, Dale, Thanks so much for having me.
It is a wonderful day, and we've got a lot
going on in the West Virginia State University right now.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
I love how active you are over there and what
outreach that you do just want to kind of start
from the basics here. This week has been full of
students moving back. You even helped to move in some
of it the students. I love that story with you
and the first lady over at West Virginia State University.
What's the vibe like right now over at West Virginia State.

Speaker 10 (13:47):
Well, the vibe is one of great energy.

Speaker 4 (13:51):
Dale.

Speaker 10 (13:51):
We are really excited to welcome all of our new
students and our faculty and staff back to campus.

Speaker 4 (13:58):
You are right.

Speaker 10 (13:59):
My wife and I helped parents and students earlier this
week as our new students moved into the residence halls,
and it's always an exciting part of the academic year
to welcome new members to the State family and just
really appreciate everything that our team does on campus to
facilitate what was a very very orderly move in. And

(14:22):
we're looking forward to kicking off the start of the
academic year on Monday, classes begin. We'll be in full swing,
we'll be welcoming again a robust class to the university,
and I'm just excited about all of the things that
we've got on tap this academic year.

Speaker 3 (14:40):
Yeah, I want to talk about those coming up in
just a little bit. Do you have for the faculty
and students that are starting classes on Monday. Do you
have a kind of a pep talk message that you
want to relate to them.

Speaker 10 (14:48):
Yeah, I mean, you know, Dale, one of the things
I said when I welcomed the faculty back on this
past Monday, I said, this is going to be a
year of action and opportunity at West Virginia State University,
an opportunity for us to double down on our mission
of transforming lives excellence in education.

Speaker 4 (15:08):
So I think my message is it's.

Speaker 10 (15:10):
Time to lean in and lean in in a way
that it's going to be impactful, a way that it's
going to help us to again move West Virginia State
University to the next level.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
I don't know, you probably don't know this, but I've
hired out of the Broadcast school over there. I've hired
well young Ryan in here as a graduate. I have
a couple more people that are on staff already now.
I've hired prolifically out of West Virginia State in the
past and always works out well.

Speaker 4 (15:38):
I'm glad to hear that.

Speaker 10 (15:39):
Of course, as you know, Dale, I mean West Virginia
State University is proud to have ten thousand alumni just
in the canav Valley alone. So no matter where you go,
what profession you're in, what community you're in, you're going
to find someone who is a West Virginia State University alumni.
And it speaks to our impact and our presence in
this valley.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
Yeah, absolutely true, There's no question about that. Since I've
been I've been back in West Virginia since twenty ten,
and just the expansion of the footprint of the public outreach,
the messaging that the top of mind awareness type of thing.
I mean, it's I don't even know if it's a
if you can even determine what the factor of impact
has been, but it's been significant just in the fifteen

(16:20):
years that I've been back.

Speaker 4 (16:20):
There's no question about it.

Speaker 10 (16:21):
Yeah, I mean, certainly the impact, there's no secret there.
It's our people. We are a small institution, but we
have an incredible impact and that is because of the
dedicated faculty, staff, administrators, and community of supporters who stand
behind our university. As a proud Land Grant university, we
have a mission that extends across the entire state of

(16:42):
West Virginia, and we are proud of the contributions that
we make and we appreciate everyone who stands behind our institution.

Speaker 3 (16:49):
Next Thursday is State Stride. It's a major tradition at
Westernion State University. I've never I didn't go to Western
US State University, so I hear the alums talk about it.
I know it's a big deal. What is State Stride?
What can incoming freshmen expect?

Speaker 10 (17:02):
Yeah, I mean again, as I've echoed here, we are
a family. We're a family at West Virginia State University,
and when you come to our institution, you are embraced.
And what State Stride does is it gives our new
students and opportunity to be formally welcome to the state family.
We are going to begin the State Stride, of course,

(17:24):
with a pep talk, so to speak for me as
a president, I'll talk about what it means to be
part of state, what it means to be starting your education.
We're going to instill a sense of pride in our students.
And after that we're going to have a bit of
a parade. All of our new students are going to
march down Campus Walk or College Walk, and they are

(17:44):
going to march down and we're going to have faculty
and staff and alumni line they're cheering them on as
they begin their academic journeys at West Virginia State University.
So it's really a celebration and I certainly invite you
and others to come and join.

Speaker 3 (18:01):
This is such a great tradition because this is one
of those things with a lot of these with a
lot of these students that are coming in, I mean,
college is a big step in in into their next
the next progression of their life, whatever it might be,
and something like the Stride event, it helps marry them
into their family, their their new family at school. It
helps get them involved with the teachers, with the faculty,

(18:21):
They get to see some of their some of their classmates,
and it just gets you, I guess, kind of bought
in to the culture and to the to the spirit
of the school.

Speaker 10 (18:29):
That's right, and we do have a really really rich history,
strong legacy at West Virginia State University. And the thing
that I impress upon our students, in addition to telling
them the university's commitment to their success, the university's commitment
to standing behind them, it's again to instill that sense
of pride, to let them know that they are becoming
part of something special, an institution that has had an

(18:52):
incredible impact not just on the Kanaw Valley, but across
the state of West Virginia. Our alumni have really gone
on to change the world. Alumni like Katherine Johnson, who
we all know who helped America win the space race
and she got her education at West Virginia State. So
we try to impress upon our students to be proud
of the fact that you are a Yellowjacket because you

(19:13):
are joining a rich tradition, a tradition that will help
you change your lives again through excellence and education.

Speaker 3 (19:21):
Man, what a great message, What a great message for
students and for the parents of those students, for people
that are looking to enroll. Well, too late to enroll now,
I guess, but I forgot. I was already fact checked
on that one.

Speaker 4 (19:32):
That's right.

Speaker 10 (19:33):
It is not too late to enroll again. Classes begin
on Monday. So if you were interested in coming in
West Virginia State, we encourage you to come today or
to come next week and we will get you signed
up and get you.

Speaker 4 (19:44):
Ready to What is the actual deadline.

Speaker 10 (19:46):
Well, I mean again, Monday is the first day of classes.
Ideally we would like students to be signed up on
Monday at least, because you know, we don't want you
to get behind your academic studies. But but come see
us today or next week and we will definitely get
you registered and ready to go.

Speaker 3 (20:02):
See that's how it's done, though, we'll find a way
to make it work.

Speaker 4 (20:05):
Absolutely.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
Was just told about a new cybersecurity program that you
receive final approval for as a four year bachelor's Greek program.
This is an important type of program to add because
what we're seeing is modern classes for modern concerns and
things like that.

Speaker 4 (20:19):
Well, can you tell me about this?

Speaker 10 (20:20):
Yeah, I can tell you that we are super excited
about cybersecurity at West Virginia State University. And as you
just say it, Dell, we have now received final approval
to offer a four year Bachelors of Science degree in
cybersecurity at West Virginia State University. It's been a labor
of love. We have worked on this program for almost

(20:42):
three years now and we have seen it through its
infancy and now we are ready to welcome students into
a cybersecurity program, a program that is very much designed
to prepare students for the high demand career fiel up cybersecurity.
We know cybersecurity is the future, and as president, I
am committed to making sure that our university is offering

(21:06):
programs that are aligned with workforce needs, and cybersecurity definitely
checks that box. At West Virginia State University, we are
the only school in West Virginia to receive a megan
dollars from Google to start a googlew Cybersecurity clinic and
drew that clinic. Our students are actually helping small businesses
here in this valley assess their infrastructure it infrastructure to

(21:30):
make sure it's hardened so that they can protect themselves
from cyber attacks from around the world. So cybersecurity, it's
a big day for cyber at West Virginia State University.
Our programs are going to integrate AI and agriculture, so
it's definitely going to be something unique. I encourage anyone
who is listening to me, who is interested interested in cybersecurity,

(21:50):
come see us at West Virginia State University and become
part of something special.

Speaker 3 (21:53):
It's really exciting to have such a modern a degree
that's available, and I'm assuming downstream that's going to open
up internship opportunities, research opportunities and obviously an expansion into
career fields and things like that. I mean, that's massively important,
and we need to try to keep some of those
people here at home. I mean, if we're looking to
expand educating them here at home is going to help
that they don't go out of state. Makes it a
lot harder to or it makes it easier to keep

(22:15):
them here. And then this isn't something that you can
just walk into a tex Score or something and get
or a technicals Well, you need to go to a
college this This is a four year degree. So this is
something that's going to be massively important for the future
of our technical infrastructure. I mean everything around us. You
mentioned AI a moment ago AI is great, but that's
going to require a whole new level of cybersecurity, you know.
I mean, there's so much that plays into that. Very important.

Speaker 10 (22:37):
It is very important, and the thing that I will
say is that we want all of our students again
to have access to this high demand feel Again, we
believe that cybersecurity, as I said, is the future, and
we want that education to be accessible to as many
students as possible here in this valley. The point that

(22:59):
you may about wanting to keep students here. The good
news about West Virginia State is that the majority of
our students are from West Virginia and when they graduate,
they stay right here.

Speaker 3 (23:08):
So important to West Virginia. Yeah, that's so important to
keep our talent here at home. And I'd like to
see that at a text with a question, See, I
have two questions off the text line. Does West Virginia
State University offer remote classes for working parents?

Speaker 10 (23:21):
Yeah, well, we do have an inventory of online programs.
I would encourage your listener to visit our website and
check out our Academic Affairs page and there you will

Speaker 3 (23:38):
Professionals, and then they can find the same information there.
I'm sure, but also curious if any of the classes
lead to a veterinarian degree.

Speaker 10 (23:47):
Yeah, not yet, Dale, I will say one of the
things that we are working on, because again we are
a land grand institution in agriculture is an important part
of who we are. We are working to stand up
a VET tech program and we're doing that in cooperation
with West Virginia University and the West Virginia Department of Agriculture.
We're working to identify funding, but ultimately we want to

(24:08):
provide that program for that students can pursue a degree
in veterinary and technicians education and go out and help
our vets serve our animals across the state.

Speaker 3 (24:21):
I wanted to talk about sports for just a minute
for a couple of reasons. Number one, I think the
most important reason for this station anyway is our sister station,
Woody Wood Station one who seven three. The Beat is
going to be the home for West Virginia State sports
for this upcoming season for football and basketball. So that's
going to get underway very soon. Sure, I know what.
He is massively excited to be putting on this to

(24:41):
get it out on the airwaves. And man, I love
the MEC. I love the sports that we have here
in the valley, and I'm really looking forward to this.
I think this is going to be a neat partnership.

Speaker 10 (24:49):
It's going to be a phenomenal partnership. Dell and we
are so excited to be joining The Beat here to
have our basketball and football game games on air. It's
going to be huge for us because what we really
are excited about is getting Yellowjacket athletics in the homes

(25:11):
of all of your listeners, because we believe that our
athletes are coaches and all of our university do an
excellent job of competing on the field and also in
the classroom. But this is an opportunity to shine a
bright light on the remarkable job that our athletes do.
We're excited for the partnership and I look forward to

(25:32):
tuning in as well when I can't be at the
games in person.

Speaker 3 (25:35):
And that's what's going to make it so great, as
you'll be able to do that if you're not not
be able to make the games in person, and not
just the history of sports and not only at West
Virginia State in the NEC and then formerly in the
wvi I A C. I remember when I was a
kid in the in the eighties, my aunt had tickets.
She would always get tickets to the wvi AC tournament
here down. Her and her husband were graduates of mors

(25:56):
or UC of UC and so they were big UC fans.
But we would go in there, and we I mean
we went. We would we would take the rod Man,
we would go for the entire tournament. Just about State
would be in there. Uh you know, I remember State,
you see for some reason wheeling I think was because
of their uniforms back in the time. I just remember,
you know, certain certain teams that would be playing. But
I just love the the the excitement and uh and

(26:18):
everything that came along with that. And it's only grown
since then. I mean since the wv A a C turned
into the NBC. MEC has expanded some. And I mean
State has a pretty good position in both football and
basketball right now. Got great coaches, a good program. It's
a good place to be. It's a phenomenal place to be.
And surely as we kick off the football season, I
know that coach Pennington is is fired up and ready

(26:41):
to go. In the evenings, my wife and I will
walk campus and we walked past the football field and
we will see our our yellowjackets and our coaching staff
down there getting ready, getting ready to compete. And I
know it's going to be a phenomenal season, which is
really going to be enhanced with this partnership with the Beat.
Just briefly to tell our listening audience and possibly President

(27:04):
Gae Cage if he didn't know, we have Daniel Woods
is going to be our playboy play announcer for this.
Tom Bragg is going to be color commentary for football.
The combined knowledge of ma AC and WVI I C
history among those two are incredible. So there's gonna be
great context given to the Playboy play as well. They
know the teams, the players, the areas. It's going to

(27:24):
be that with that broadcast team that we're inserting in there.
It's pro level broadcast right away. It's going to be
done right, and it's going to sound really really good.

Speaker 4 (27:32):
We can't lose.

Speaker 3 (27:33):
Yeah, it's gonna be awesome. Really looking forward to that.
All the great stuff that's going on at West Virginia
State University at the beginning of this new school year,
and I just think it's a deciding time and I
wanted to take a couple of moments to talk to
President Cage about that. I really appreciate your time in
coming in this morning and sharing some of your insights
and your positivity. I'm really excited for this upcoming year.

Speaker 4 (27:50):

It's Friday.

Speaker 3 (32:10):
Happy Friday, everybody, and thanks for listening to WHS. The
Voice of Charleston. Coming up next is going to be
talk Line with Dave Wilson and TJ Meadows. TJ will
stop in here with us for the last couple of
minutes of the show that'll be coming up here in
just a little bit, and then later on today TJ
is filling in for Dave Allen this afternoon on Midday
in the last hour, Amanda Baron is going to have

(32:31):
the first two hours on her own, I do believe,
so that'll be this afternoon on Metro News Midday, and
then I'll be back this afternoon with Dave Weekly at
three oh six for Metro News Hotline. A great show
that we have for you today, like we do every Friday.
Of course, we play the game Boy Sell that'll be
at the top of the four o'clock hour. We'll have
beer Friday at four thirty three, and all kinds of

(32:52):
great stuff that's coming up on Metro News Hotline later
on this afternoon. A great weekend show. I hope that
when we do our Friday show, I hope that you
will tune into that you've not given it a chance before,
which leads me into something that I thought that we
could do here today. By the way, I wanted to
remind you that the favety Live is brought to you
in part by Meek's Rentals and Leasing, offering stress free

(33:15):

when I came on the show, and I think I
mentioned that I had a musical guest. I was going
to try to do some live music, and unfortunately that
fell through, and after reaching out to a couple places,
I decided what I was going to do is I'm
just going to replay the interview that Dave Weekly had
with David Mayfield. David Mayfield is going to be hosting
Mountain Stage this weekend, and this is an interview that

(33:39):
took place yesterday during the show, and I thought that
it would be interesting to have this on here. Number One,
we have Mountain Stage on every single week. We've done
this for well over a decade now. Larry Gross was
a mainstay for the longest time. Kathy Matteya is a
guest almost every week at Thursday at four o'clock, and
then David Mayfield when he fills in as our guest

(34:00):
as well, which he was yesterday. But we've done this
segment on Hotline for well over a decade where we
preview upcoming shows, talk to the great talent from Mountain Stage,
whether it be Larry, whether it be David or Kathy Matteya,
get stories out of them, have them share a little
bit about themselves some of their experiences, and then also
talk a lot about Mountain Sage. It's one of the
favorite segments that we do on Hotline every weekend, and

(34:21):
yesterday they've had an opportunity to talk to David Mayfield
and they're talking about the show that's coming up this
August or this this August, this Saturday, that's gonna happen
at at the Culture Center Theater here in Charleston at
seven o'clock. And the lineup is a is a darn
good lineup they're gonna have. So I can get the
full have it over on my notes here. It's gonna

(34:45):
be a good lineup they're gonna have there this weekend.
It's Amethyst Kea, Matt Anderson, Margaret Glass by Vanessa Collier
and Ron Sowell.

Speaker 4 (34:54):
We have within this clip.

Speaker 3 (34:56):
That we're getting ready to play, we do have clips
from Vanessa Collier, Ron Soul. So I'm looking forward to
bringing this to you. If you haven't listened to Hotline
with Day Weekly and Me that comes on in the
afternoons at three o'clock, this will give you a little
bit of an idea, and especially if you haven't heard
of this segment we do with Mountain Stage because I
always have a good time with that. It's always great
to have Larry grosson here or Kathy Mateya when they're available,

(35:16):
and David of course is awesome as well, so well,
I want to go ahead and play that now. This
is Dave Weekly with David Mayfield from Mountain Stage, previewing
this weekend's concert coming up at the Cultural Center here
in Charleston.

Speaker 8 (35:26):
And let's bring David Mayfield back to the show. He's
going to be hosting Mountain Stage subbon in for Kathy
Mateya Hey, David, how you doing.

Speaker 15 (35:35):
I'm doing well, Dave? How are you?

Speaker 8 (35:37):
Hey man? Are you the kind of guy that's got
a lot of bumper stickers on your car?

Speaker 15 (35:40):
You know, I don't have any bumper stickers on my car.
I've got about a fifty of them on my guitar case.

Speaker 8 (35:46):
Ah, there you go, there you go, mess the car.

Speaker 15 (35:51):
The bumper stickers that said my son is my child
is on the honor roll.

Speaker 8 (35:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 15 (35:57):
Yeah, my parents never had one of those.

Speaker 8 (36:00):
That's great.

Speaker 15 (36:01):
Hey.

Speaker 8 (36:01):
You know what, though, I would have figured that would
have been totally on brand for you to have like
ten bumper stickers on your car.

Speaker 15 (36:08):
You know, well I might now, you know, I've been
listening and since it's not a trend, I think I
need to try to bring it back.

Speaker 8 (36:15):
I like what you I like what you did there,
hey man. Before we get into the music and what's
coming up on Mountain Stage, and we'll talk about a
couple of the artists. I didn't know you were into baseball.
You're going to be throwing out the first pitch at
a dirty birds game.

Speaker 15 (36:28):
I know that. What do you think about that?

Speaker 8 (36:30):
I'm always I think it's pretty good. Do you even
own a mitt?

Speaker 15 (36:34):
You know? I was a catcher in Little league and
I still have my nineteen ninety six Winners at Heart Trophy.

Speaker 8 (36:44):
Winter's at Art. It's excellent. That's excellent. So that's going
to be this Sunday. You're going to be throwing the
first pitch out.

Speaker 15 (36:51):
That's right, all right?

Speaker 8 (36:52):
All right? Well, hey man, are you practicing, William?

Speaker 15 (36:56):
Yeah, I'm I'm trying to, you know.

Speaker 8 (36:59):
Get my arm back up. All right, Hey, listen to
the professional level. Okay, listen. One piece of advice. Go
all the way up on top of the mound. Okay, okay,
don't don't be like forty five feet away. Don't do that.
Don't do that, because even if you throw the ball
correctly throw a strike, people are like, well, you know,

(37:19):
why is that guy on top of the mount. Get
on top of the mound. That's where you need to
throw that first pitch out.

Speaker 15 (37:24):
All right, I'm going to do it for you, Dave, I.

Speaker 8 (37:26):
Had a boy at a boy. All right, let's talk
about tell me a little bit about Mountain Stage this weekend.

Speaker 15 (37:31):
Oh, it's going to be a good one, kind of
a bluesier theme. We've got saxophonist, singer band leader Vanessa
Collier on the show, Canadian roots and acoustic blues songwriter
Matt Anderson, and then Tennessee's Amethyst Kia, who was on
Mountain Stage a while back as part of the East

(37:51):
Tennessee State University Old Time Pride band.

Speaker 4 (37:54):
Nice.

Speaker 15 (37:55):
So it's cool that she's, you know, sort of developed
this cool Southern gossa kind of style. And then we'll
have singer, songwriter, amazing guitar player Margaret Glaspie on the show.
And Mountain Stages band leader Ron Soul just put out

(38:15):
an album and he's going to be a guest this
week and play some tunes from that. So excited about that,
and I'll brag on him a little bit. That album
made it to number ten on the Folk Alliance International
Radio Charts.

Speaker 8 (38:29):
Nice Nice, he's gone global. Hey, we were talking about baseball.
Ron's kind of coming in for the bullpen because Hayes.
Carl is a late scratch right for this show.

Speaker 15 (38:40):
That's right, absolutely, I see what you did there.

Speaker 8 (38:42):
Yeah, hey, we let's talk a little bit about Vanessa Collier. Yeah.

Speaker 15 (38:48):
Well, she's, you know, very awarded. She's one Contemporary Blues
Album of the Year, horn Player of the Year several times,
from the Blues Music Award Female Artist of the Year.
She's a yeah, just a powerhouse when it comes to
singing and playing the saxophone.

Speaker 8 (39:10):
Hey, you know what, Larry Gross was with us last
week a week ago. We were inside the huddle and
we were talking about Vanessa Coier on that show, and
it's really unusual to see, uh, a performer use the
horn and sing at the same time. Have you ever
seen that? Never? Yeah, we were talking about some of

(39:33):
the artists that do that, like Louis Armstrong did that.
I was thinking about Jack Sheldon did that. You know,
It's just it's it's just unusual to see an artist
use a saxophone or a trumpet and then in the
midst of performing go away from the instrument and and
then sing.

Speaker 15 (39:53):
Totally. Yeah it'll I think it'll be a real treat.

Speaker 8 (39:56):
Yeah, Chet Baker, there's another example of somebody might do that. Coop,
We've got a little bit of Vanessa call your Music.
Let's hear a little bit of that. Vanessa Carer is
going to be a mountain stage this coming Sunday, with all.

Speaker 7 (40:17):
You might trying to make it anywhere, no solution insight,
You can't hear about the mom, don't.

Speaker 15 (40:27):
Know what to do.

Speaker 8 (40:32):
A little all right, there you go, how's happened?

Speaker 11 (40:44):
All right?

Speaker 8 (40:45):
We've also got a track from Ron's new album, Dance
Till the Music Stops. This is a text mex Flavor
offering what do you know about this one?

Speaker 15 (40:54):
Well? This features uh Joel Guzman on accordion, who it's
sort of a you know, a big star in the
world of accordion players, who's played with everyone from Joe Eli,
Paul Simon and Uh. It's really you know, speaks to
Rohm's style, that sort of creole meets R and B vibe.

Speaker 8 (41:19):
All right, let's have a little bit of that coup.
I never knew what my heart had.

Speaker 15 (41:37):
I never knew that was blumped.

Speaker 8 (41:40):
Up just.

Speaker 15 (41:45):
Bala. Never knew.

Speaker 8 (42:01):
I could see where that that style of music would
just fit right in with Joe E Lee. I love
his Texas sound. He's got a great sound. Hey, David,
we're wrapping this up. We're with David Mayfield. He's subbing
in for Kathy Mattea on Mountain Stage this weekend. Of course,
there are tickets available mountain Stage dot org for more information.
That's where you can get your tickets as well. How's
your band doing? What kind of summer you had?

Speaker 15 (42:23):
We were real busy. Yeah, we've been playing a lot
since our album came out. A lot of festivals, a
lot of playing in the hot sun and in our
bluegrass suits. Uh so you know, can't complain.

Speaker 8 (42:38):
Well that's good. Now, when does that start to wind
down for you? When? When's the when's the slow period
for you?

Speaker 15 (42:44):
Well? There's there is really isn't much of a slow period.
Uh the winter time. I do a lot of studio work, Okay,
I master albums. I've got a mastering studio and I
just mastered Tim O'Brien's latest album.

Speaker 8 (42:57):
Oh nice. Okay, Hey, so let me.

Speaker 15 (43:00):
Play around here, let me a studio in the winter.

Speaker 8 (43:03):
Let me ask you this as well.

Speaker 15 (43:04):
I mean.

Speaker 8 (43:07):
You've hosted Mountain Stage how many times now?

Speaker 15 (43:10):
I think one hundred and thirteen, No, seven.

Speaker 8 (43:14):
So it's getting easier for you, right.

Speaker 15 (43:17):
I think, so I know where to stand, I know
which microphone to talk into now, so I'm getting the
hang of it.

Speaker 8 (43:26):
Had a Boy, Had a Boy? Hey, well, listen, thanks
for coming on the show to talk about this weekend's
edition to Mountain Stage, and best of luck when you
get to the ballpark this weekend. That's going to be
a busy day for you. Man.

Speaker 15 (43:38):
Yeah, I'm excited about it though. It's you know, it's
the adventure of a lifetime. I've always wanted to do
something like this, and I'm thrilled to have been asked.
And I hope I don't make a fool of myself.

Speaker 8 (43:51):
Dude, I'm sure you're going to do just fine. Think
about that, Coop. Here's the situation. This is going to
be a first in the history of Mountain Stage, right
where the host is going to throw out the first
pitch at a ball game and then literally a couple
of hours later, be hosting the show at the Culture Center.

Speaker 4 (44:03):
That's good.

Speaker 8 (44:04):
See, yeah, Dave, good luck with that.

Speaker 15 (44:06):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 4 (44:07):
Yeah, I'm trying.

Speaker 15 (44:08):
Maybe if you can think of one more thing I
could do in between.

Speaker 8 (44:12):
No, no, maybe sell a few programs poor a few
beers at the yard before you go over there today. Yeah,
that'll be good.

Speaker 15 (44:18):
Like a ribbon cutting ceremony at a olive garden.

Speaker 8 (44:21):
You ever thought about selling any used cars or you know,
taking a shift at a radio station or something. Hey Dave,
thanks for coming on the show. Best elect this weekend.

Speaker 3 (44:30):
Hey, yeah, that was David Mayfield. He's gonna be hosting
Mountain Stage tomorrow at the Culture Center. Here today's Friday. Yeah,
so tomorrow at the Culture Center seven o'clock. Tickets are
still available for that program if you want to check
it out. That's a feature we have on Hotline every

try to get some guest hosts and things in here

One thing I wanted to tell you about before I
bring t J Meadows one to give us an idea
of what's going to happen on the last episode of
talk Line for the week. I want to tell you
things are a little bit different on the sports things
for WHS this upcoming year. For one thing, Saturday afternoons

(48:48):
are going to be more free. We don't have the
nine hours of WU coverage that we've had for the
last decade or so. That's not something that Metro News
is providing this year. So it's not like CHA isn't caring,
it's just not a program that's available. We have other
ancellary programs covering WU that's going to be one, but
just that nine hour game day coverage we're not going

(49:08):
to have this year. What that allows on WCCHS is
for us to expand our college football games, so we're
actually going to have more Playboy Play action on WCCHS
than we've had in a long time. I think that
I counted up, not including bowl games in the National
Championship Playoffs, we have thirty two college football games on
WCCHS and fourteen ninety ESPN over the college football season,

(49:33):
and when you add in bowl games and the entire
playoff run because we have that as well, it's going
to be well over fifty college football games we'll have
here on WCHS throughout the year, and then NFL coverage
stays basically the same that it's been over the last
couple of years. Will have a doubleheader every Sunday on
fourteen ninety WSWW. We'll have a one o'clock a game

(49:54):
over here on WCCHS to make room for sports Line
later on Sunday evenings. This year, we've added a whole slew.
It's not every but it is a select and it's
several matchups of the Sunday, Thursday, and Monday night games.
So we're going to have about ten of those all
together throughout the season as well. All told, over one
hundred football games will be on five ad whs this

(50:15):
year and those are at a cost of zero to you.

Speaker 4 (50:19):
So if you're.

Speaker 3 (50:19):
Struggling to find your sports and all these streaming things
are about there, and hey, guess what, play by play
is much better on the radio as well, give it
a try. You might save yourself a little money, but
at least you'll find good entertainment. Our high school football
season kicks off on the twenty eighth with Spring Valley
at George, Washington. It will be a doubleheader for that weekend.
Our second game will be Poka at Buffalo. Both of
those games will be right here on five ADWCHS. As

(50:41):
we return to the game of the week format we
covered Hurricane exclusively last year. We'll have plenty of Hurricane
games on the radio, but it's not going to be
the exclusive team we coverage that we cover Spring Valley
George Washington, PoCA at Buffalo, Nitro, Saint Albans, Parkersburg Hurricane,
and South Charleston George Washington. That covers our first four
games that we're going to have, and we'll release the
remainder of the schedule after that. Our sister station, which

(51:03):
is ninety six to one KWS, will still be carrying
every Hoover football game. And of course, as we talked
with President Cage earlier. With President Cage earlier, we know
that we're gonna be doing wes Virginia State football as well.
On one O seven three the Beat. The tickets have
been claimed. The tickets have been claimed for the Reds,
so you can stop calling in now. I'll have more

(51:24):
tickets to give away. They know they were gonna be
so popular. I would have had more, but you can
stop calling it. And they have been claimed that to laugh.
That cackle was from TJ. How you doing this morning, TJ?

Speaker 8 (51:34):
I'm doing great. What a great high school lineup?

Speaker 2 (51:36):
Man?

Speaker 4 (51:36):
I am.

Speaker 3 (51:37):
I love this type of year, this time of year
because we really get to lean into the local with
the high school with the high school sports. I miss
having our WVU coverage, but I'm a little bit excited
to be able to bring double headers every single week
on wc Just.

Speaker 4 (51:49):
It's good stuff.

Speaker 19 (51:49):
Yeah, And to your point, there's something about the play
by play in radio.

Speaker 4 (51:53):
It's just better.

Speaker 19 (51:54):
It's just better. Turn the TV down, take it to
the game with you. I love watching if I'm live
at the game and having the guys in my ear
because there's elements they see that you don't see.

Speaker 3 (52:05):
Just wonderful and just a quick thing. Radio is live,
streaming is is not. So you want to tune in
live to the radio. What's coming up on talk line?

Speaker 19 (52:12):
So Ryan Schmeltz from Foxh's Radio is going to join us.
Of course, Putin and Trump getting together today. We'll follow
that story. Continue to talk about this asset sale of
state hospitals to this private country company.

Speaker 8 (52:22):
Dig into that.

Speaker 19 (52:23):
Chris Steierwaltz at eleven o six and it's Friday, so
it's Steam release.

Speaker 4 (52:27):
Steam release. I know you guys love that. At least
you don't. You don't have to respond. You don't have
to respond, or you don't respond.

Speaker 8 (52:34):
There's something nice about that.

Speaker 4 (52:35):
It's a feature of the program. Yes, indeed, DJ things
a bunch. We'll toss you.

Speaker 3 (52:38):
We'll see a little later on, in about seven minutes
on the other side on talk Line with Dave Wilson.
That's going to do it for me right now. We'll
be like this afternoon at three oh six on Metro
News Hotline. Have a great day, everyone, and thanks for
listening this week. Dave Allen back on Monday. Have a
great weekend. I'm Deale Cooper. This is five adwc HS,
the voice of Charlestons.

Speaker 2 (53:00):
Amninty six point five at then Charleston one oh four
point five Cross Lanes, w VRC Media Station.

Speaker 4 (53:07):
We are proud to live here too.
