The Lovely, the Talented, You lover. Millie Snyder is here.
How you doing with Millie?

Speaker 2 (02:20):
God?

Speaker 5 (02:21):
I love that introduction?

Speaker 6 (02:22):
Thank you?

Speaker 5 (02:22):
Would you repeat that?

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Very nice? The Lovely the Talented you love her? It's
Millie Snyder, Thank you, Dave.

Speaker 5 (02:28):
I'm happy to be here.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
It's National Radio Day.

Speaker 5 (02:31):
And congratulations to every one of us who love the
radio and the people who love you.

Speaker 7 (02:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Oh there's a few, one or two. Okay. So I've
been doing this for thirty seven years now, my goodness,
thirty seven years. Five years with this company, but thirty
seven years total.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
What was your inspiration time to get a real job?

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Huh?

Speaker 5 (02:52):
Oh you've had those.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
They're not fun, No, no one. I had to wear
a suit and tie. Oh good, that sucked now, I
know the job didn't suck in the student tie sucks.
I actually enjoyed the job very much. I don't know.
I mean a couple of things. I grew up in
a house where the radio was always on on their
local station. We actually at that time, even though it
was a small town my hometown, we had two radio

(03:15):
stations and they were big competitors, but we kind of
would listen to both of them. That and WKRP in Cincinnati,
the CBS television show from the late nineteen seventies and
early eighties. When I first I was probably in third
grade when that show came out, And when I saw
doctor Johnny Fever and being his fly trap and Herb
Tarleak and all the characters on that show, I said,

(03:35):
that's the coolest job in the world right there. And
I have worked with people that were just like every
one of those, matter of fact, of work in this
building with some that are just like Ron Hughes would
be Herb Tarlack, you know, the the Weasley salesman, Benus.
Fly Trap's got to be Woody. So Johnny Fever is
a probably Steve Animal, probably Steve Animal. So anyway, that

(03:59):
was my inspiration.

Speaker 5 (04:00):
So it's a good one though, because there's a lot
of things that may do you think, Hey, I think.

Speaker 8 (04:05):
I can do that.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
Yeah, I enjoy it all right, So let's move with
you everything.

Speaker 5 (04:10):
First of all, let me tell you that our Mediterranean
Mindset Group now has a new location. We have left
the Goodwill Building. We are now meeting at the Trinity
Lutheran Evangelical Church. And where is that and that is
sixteen hundred Canall Boulevard, Elizabeth Street, very very good landmarks,

(04:31):
across the street from the Ben A. Jacob Synagogue, half
a block from the Woman's Club, and there is plenty
of free parking and that's a really big plus. And
also the good news is not only do we now
have a morning meeting, we now have an evening meeting
and that is at five point thirty. The morning is

(04:52):
at ten am. But in addition to that, Monday night
was a very special treat for me, and that is
I was a guest speaker for the Parkinson's group that
was at the Blessed sacrament in South Charleston, and they
have a support group that meets monthly, but Monday night
they had the largest crowd and I was very humbled

(05:15):
because so many people came to hear what I had
to say about Parkinson's. And in addition to that, the
one way of eating that is recommended universally by people
who suffer with this malady, and that is the Mediterranean lifestyle.

(05:36):
Why because the food is clean, it doesn't have chemicals, preservatives,
and not only is it helpful, I wish I one
of the things I said on Monday night, I wish
healthy eating would take Parkinson's away. But it doesn't. However,

(05:56):
it doesn't make it worse either. And some of the
eating that we do because we like it or it's
a habit where that's the way we grew up. And
I could go down the list of the things that
you know, push us that food is not in our
best interest and it aggravates, it takes a bad thing

(06:17):
and makes it angry. The Mediterranean lifestyle doesn't make anything angry,
doesn't make it worse, And this is important information we
need to learn how to eat healthy, clean food. Now,
a lot of people think that it's just about weight loss,
and that is just such a small piece of the puzzle.

(06:39):
Because eating healthy, you get better, you feel better, you
can do more, and miraculously you lose weight. And that
is something that people need to pay attention to. And
it's available, available in terms that you got to come
to it. And I set it up as a support

(06:59):
group because I believe that when you can be with
other people who share what's going on for them, and
you can share what's going on for you, you get
stronger because you realize you're not the only person with
this problem.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
And I think, Melly, I think that's true of a
lot of different things, not just eating apps. I mean,
if you're trying to kick a habit, if it's something
positive or negative, it's going on. A solid support group
is always people around you to kind of hold you accountable.
And it's not always about holding you accountable, it's also
about networking and learning. Okay, this worked for you. Okay,

(07:34):
that's an interesting idea. Never really thought about that.

Speaker 5 (07:36):
And one of the things about Trinity Lutheran they make
their facility available to so many different groups. AA meets
there and other support groups, and people need people. People
need to be able to identify with feel better because
someone else has gone through the same thing and you

(07:58):
hear that they can't do it, and you have had
a successful run, so you quite naturally want to share
that with someone who is down in the dumps and
it's a give and a take. And that's why it's
so important.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
And when you talk about it, and you come on
every month and talk with this again, we're talking with
Millie Snyder. You talk about this Mediterranean. We don't like
to call it. You don't like to use the term diet.
You know, it's a Mediterranean lifestyle, lifestyle. And so what
we get a lot of times is people that listen
to this, they may be saying, Okay, well I get
ten minutes for lunch. Okay, now they may get thirty,

(08:34):
but they got other things they got to do. I
gotta run errands in my lunch or whatever. I'm in
an office or wherever. I don't have time for that.
That's the biggest thing, The two biggest things I think
to eating healthy. Our people will say I don't have
the time, and it is in some people's minds it
can be a little bit more expensive to eat healthy.
To those things start with the time.

Speaker 5 (08:54):
You would say what I would simply say that you
need to eat, and you can eat eat at your
desk while you're working. It doesn't have to be just
a ten minute thing. It doesn't have to be fancy.
You can bring it from home. You don't have to.
First of all, we don't want you to go out
to the fast food world because that food has other

(09:15):
stuff in it, and that's the stuff that causes problems. Now,
in terms of expense, let's sit together and find a
way for you as an individual to let it meet
your budget, because we can do it with canned fruits,
canned vegetables. We have fish twice a week, and there's
nothing wrong with doing tuna fish. There's nothing wrong with

(09:38):
eating sardines. In fact, sardines are healthier for you than
even flounder or other white meat fishes.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
What what about the sodium content? Though a lot of
people are concerned about sodium when it comes to canned foods.

Speaker 5 (09:51):
Well, it depends you have to read labels and actually
see what you're buying and pay attention to that. But
at home, you control the salt shaker, and there are
other things that we can do. Plus, there are many
many seasonings out there that are without salt, and we
have to learn to use them. Sodium is one of
the things that makes your ankles swell in every other

(10:14):
part of your body, and it doesn't feel good. So
let's learn how to deal with that. Don't use it
as an excuse. Well, because sodium is in all the
foods that you bought. Let's learn to read labels and
make better choices for ourselves.

Speaker 3 (10:29):
And there's been so much in the news in West
Virginia and we've gotten attention nationwide. And I'm not going
to turn this into political, but I'm going to say
for the food die thing in when it comes to
public schools, there are a lot of I mean, you know, again,
West Virginia's got national attention for something positive for once,
you know, and it has to do you know, the

(10:51):
school got back in session in Knawah County last week.
It's a couple of other camping Putnam County where I lives. Tomorrow,
when the kids go back to school, they're going to
be seen some different different types of food. They may
not even know the difference. But some of the dies
have been have been taken out.

Speaker 5 (11:08):
Which I'm delighted for because and when and in getting
rid of the dies, hopefully they're going to get rid
of some of the other ingredients. But let's do it
with small baby steps before we say, well, we need
to also do this, that and the other. But one
thing at a time. I'm thrilled that they're taking that
stuff out of food. I'm thrilled because kids do not

(11:29):
need to have their bodies contaminated at early ages, because
it makes the growing up process. You continue doing what
you've always done. You know that old expression.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
If you always do what you've always done.

Speaker 5 (11:41):
You always get what you've always gotten. And it's old. Yes,
I say it many many times. I don't even like
saying it because it's the truth, and that's not a
truth that people want to hear. Our habits are formed
early on. When my children were infants, there was a
lady in one of my weight watcher classes and she
said to me, you ought to put sugar into the

(12:03):
baby food. They'll like it more. And sugar happens to
be very, very deadly. I just saw a book that
one of my members brought to the Mediterranean group, Suicide
by Sugar. There's enough. Yeah, I know it does. It
does cause them because sugar is not a friend. And

(12:23):
on our nutrition labels it tells us by the serving
how much sugar is in things. And yeah, we can
have some sugar, and we can do it occasionally, but
we also need to learn how to read labels. This
is a comprehensive way to take care of yourself.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
What would you say to parents though that will say, well,
my kid is a picky eater. My kid's not going
to eat that my kid. I mean, we got a society.
I mean, you know this is old guy talking here.
You know, when I was growing up, there was a
plate of food put in front of you and you
eat it. You know, I never once thought of looking
at my parents saying, yeah, I don't like that, Well

(13:00):
then too bad.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
You know you're not.

Speaker 3 (13:02):
Going to eat. But what would you say to a
mom or dad or grandparents listener? And I'm going I
got a picky eater. My kid's not going to eat
these things.

Speaker 5 (13:09):
I'm going to only share with you what my daughter
shared with me when she would make dinner and one
of her sons would sit at the kitchen table and cry. So,
of course she didn't want him to cry, so she
made him leave the room and he continued to cry.
When he stopped crying, he came back and he ate
what was on the plate. And I think somebody has
to be strong here. Now you have picky eaters. I

(13:33):
understand that. So we can also learn to accommodate that.
But we don't have to cater. We can accommodate. And
I make it sound very easy, but one of my
grandsons likes to eat a certain way, and so I
know that, and I make it for the whole family
so that everybody's happy and it doesn't have to be

(13:55):
something that stands out. But yes, a lot of us,
as parents, we cave. We want to make the child happy.
But what we're doing is we're giving up a valuable
lesson of teaching how to.

Speaker 3 (14:08):

More Patty hamilton is. Here, patty good, Morning welcome to the.

Speaker 13 (17:34):
Show good Morning, dave thanks for having, us and.

Speaker 3 (17:37):
Mister Bob peppers here as. Well good, morning welcome to the.

Speaker 2 (17:39):
Show.

Speaker 3 (17:39):
Guest So i'll let either one of you. Start i'm
an easy, interviewer tell us about the. Event who wants
to go first to tell us what it's all. About
i'll go.

Speaker 13 (17:46):
First it's The building Bridges future Of West virginia Town.
Hall we consider it a community forum and we are
trying to make it as nonpartisan as. Possible we invite
it all members Of, congress the, governor our for state
senators who Represent, kanawa our ten delegates who represent some

(18:08):
part Of, kanaw and some local government officials as.

Speaker 3 (18:12):
Well, okay what kind of a response have you had so?

Speaker 14 (18:15):
Far?

Speaker 13 (18:16):
Disappointing, okay we do have some folks Coming. Delgate Kaylee
young is Coming, Delgate Hollis lewis is, coming and a few.
Others We, unfortunately so, far no member Of congress has
indicated that they will be, there and.

Speaker 3 (18:31):
That's been a how CAN i put? THIS i guess
it's been a, disappointment uh in a lot of. People
And i'm Just i'm this is not my. Opinion i'm
basing it on the text and the phone calls THAT
i get on this show and On Metronews midday as,
well for people saying that our congressional delegation doesn't meet
with the public that. Offer AND i will say, This
patty And bob in their, defense when we have seen

(18:54):
some of the things that we've seen on, television these
things that turn into all out, RIOTS i don't blame
them for safety, purpose but this is not that kind of, Event,
Bob so.

Speaker 8 (19:02):
Let me speak to that because it's an important. Point
i'm glad you brought it. Up so we've also, seen
as has, everybody these these town hall events that just
degenerate into shouting, matches which this serves no. Purpose so
we've been very careful in making, sure particularly for the
folks that we invited to participate from a state legislature In,

(19:25):
congress that this was not going to be like. That
we were going to control to the extent that we.
Can we're going to control the event to make it
a civil, discourse and so we wrote a we've written
we have written a set of protocols and kind of
rules of, conduct And i'm going to be moderating the
event On, sunday and part of my opening remarks will

(19:46):
be to remind people about what civil discourse is and
how important it is that we listen and ask the
right questions in a responsible, way in a respectful, way
and then respectfully listen to the. Response, again you may
not agree with their, response and we hope to be
able to give people an opportunity to rebut but it

(20:07):
has to be done in a civil way so that
everybody has the opportunity to.

Speaker 3 (20:10):
Listen and you mentioned that you had sent out invitations
to the congressional delegation had not heard back. From you
did mention a couple of the. LEGISLATORS i think you
Mentioned Kaylee young And Hollis lewis will be. There have
there been Any republicans that indicated that they're.

Speaker 13 (20:22):
Coming, no but we did hear from one delegate and
one state senator very quickly that they were going to
be out of. Town AN rsvp is always. Appreciated just
let us know yes or. No but there's some way
simply haven't heard from at.

Speaker 3 (20:37):
All, Okay so if we have A gop member listening
to the show right, now that's a member of The
house or minute of The, senate what would you say
to them to further invite?

Speaker 13 (20:48):
THEM i, SAID i would, say please take advantage of this.
Opportunity it looks like we're going to have a very
good crowd. There there's been a lot of interest in,
it SO i think it's a great opportunity to do
exactly what we want to, do which is build bridges
and have a better understanding of where each other is coming.

Speaker 3 (21:06):
From talk about that name building. Bridges we wanted.

Speaker 13 (21:10):
Something that united people rather than divided, people so that
that that is really the sole purpose of the. Name
plus we have a beautiful bridge here In charleston that
we can use as as a.

Speaker 3 (21:21):
Graphics it worked worked out for everybody from the marketing

dot net because what you don't know can hurt. You

(21:42):
either one of you can answer, This where did the
idea come?

Speaker 8 (21:44):
FROM i THINK i think we were you, know we talk,
constantly the three or four of. Us we have a
texting link that we use and we're constantly talking about
the political environment and the situation as it relates To
West virginia in. General and we also are aware again

(22:07):
of this kind of lack of response from elected, officials,
partly as you, said because of the some of the
town hall meeting environments that we've. Seen so it really
just was it just came out of conversations that we were.
Having so we need to do something to allow our
citizens to ask questions and get answers in a non threatening.

(22:29):
Environment and so it just kind of started organically from. Conversations,
bob you, said you're going to be serving as as
as the.

Speaker 3 (22:38):
Moderator talk about the, format talk about how you're going
to prepare for, it what do you plan to do
as the.

Speaker 8 (22:43):
Moderator So i'm actually in the middle of writing all
of that information, out so appreciate the. Questions so the first,
thing of, course is to, interview is to introduce the
folks that are on the stage and thank them for being.

Speaker 3 (22:57):
There we've, also because of the the the lack of.

Speaker 8 (23:02):
Response from the folks that we, invited we've also added
a couple of speakers to speak on specific, topics so
we'll introduce. Them i'm going to probably start with a
kind of a general question to the to the participants
about the future Of West virginia and how they see
that how that how that's prioritized in their, minds and
then we'll we'll open it up for questions from the,

(23:24):
audience and we.

Speaker 3 (23:25):
Hope to have a.

Speaker 8 (23:28):
Energetic dialogue between the folks that are sitting in the
in the room and the folks that are on the.

Speaker 3 (23:33):
Stage that's the that's the plan. Anyway and and, LOOK
i am sure in just the five or ten minutes
that five minutes so that we've been talking, HERE i
get that this is not this is not going to
be what you see on. Television there's not the police
will not be. Involved, okay they can be out, actually you,
know solving real crime and not that this is this is.

(23:56):
Discussion And, GUYS i am a firm. Believer And i've
Said i've been doing this show for five. YEARS i
have said on this show and On Metro News, midday
all types are welcome. HERE i have everybody have the most,
LIBERAL i have the most. Conservative if we can't talk
to each other and not feel like we're always on the,
defense and just be able to, say, well why do
you what's your Experience patty that made you lean a little?

(24:18):
Left or what's the Experience joe that made you go,
right And i'm just using those as an, examples then
we got nothing in my, opinion, Guys, yeah it's.

Speaker 8 (24:27):
It's an important. Point and the other thing THAT i
think was worth mentioning is that anymore people can get
the information that they want to support their beliefs without
having it listen to the other side of the of the,
coin so to. Speak because if they want, to if
they want to see hard, right they can they can
Do Bright bart Or Fox, News if they want to

(24:48):
go hard, left they can DO msnbc or. Whatever and
they don't have to they don't have to listen to
both sides of the. Argument AND i think we're losing that.
Now so this is a way for us to try
to get people to come, together regardless of, party regardless
of belief and start listening to each.

Speaker 3 (25:06):
Other and we've kind of, gotten, guys in this society
of ours and this political, culture we've kind of gotten
to the idea that if And i'm just using you,
know into little evidence, here but if you see a
far right wing member of The house Of delegates having
a cup of coffee with a far left wing people

(25:27):
lose their their dang minds over, It like why are.
You look what happened To Bill maher When Bill maher
went to have dinner With trump at The White. HOUSE
i mean he got vilified for people by by by his,
side and it happens on the other side. Too say
you can have, conversations you, know not your mortal. Enemy
it's somewhere we got to the, POINT i think it's social,

(25:47):
media to be honest with, you that we've it's politics
has become a blood sport now and we're out to
get the other.

Speaker 8 (25:53):
Side, yeah there's just so much, anger and it's it's
unfettered sometimes and it's dangerous my.

Speaker 13 (26:00):
Opinion there's a quote THAT i, Believe JOHN. F kennedy
said that you look for the. Commonalities we all love our,
children we all want the best for the, world you,
know just things like, that and very often having been
a lobbyist for, many many years and work with both
parties and work with county officials of both, parties there

(26:23):
there are. Commonalities and but these the divisions have been
stoked in the past few, years and that's what we're
trying to. Overcome you can sit and have a cup
of coffee with someone you may profoundly disagree with, politically
but you both love your kids and have a lot in,

(26:47):
common and that's what that's what you try to find
is common.

Speaker 3 (26:50):
Ground, yeah and you know you you. See it is
a great point THAT i think that you brought, Up,
bob is if you're having a political, disagreement especially, online
and you, know which happens way too, often by the,
way both most of the time that you're arguing, online
you're not arguing with real. People you're arguing with. Bots you,
know these aren't real.

Speaker 8 (27:08):
People for the most, part you can't, tell and you
can't tell anymore exactly.

Speaker 3 (27:12):
Exactly but BUT i think what happens sometimes is you, say,
well well show me the, Proof, bob that you think,
this AND i give you a quote from you mentioned
Bright Bart Fox. NEWS i give you a, quote and
then you would not you, personally but you'd, respond, well
look look where that came. From and then then you
respond with something that you saw ON msnbc OR npr,

(27:33):
something and then well look where that Came and this
is where we are, now because everybody can go out
and they can find a source that best suits their
line of.

Speaker 8 (27:42):
Thinking one of the things we've developed for this event
is a fact sheet so we've worked hard to put
put information.

Speaker 3 (27:50):
Together and the question would, be, Though, bob whose, Facts
and that's And i'd say.

Speaker 8 (27:54):
Thathtorically as much as, possible we've we've, Added we've added
the source to the to the, doctor so people can, say,
well this was there's some information from The Kaiser Family,
foundation for, example so we listed that said here's the,
source you. Know so to the extent that we, can
we've tried to validate our, sources and we've tried to focus.

Speaker 3 (28:14):
On, fact not. Opinion we talked about elected, officials but
let's talk about the. Public why should the, Public why
Should JOHN, Q JOAN q public decide to come to this? Thing, Patty.

Speaker 13 (28:28):
I'll use The Bernie sanders event as an. Example there
is clearly. INTEREST i think that people are confused right,
now and because you, know they're spending a we seem
to have a lot of people coming to spend a
couple hours on what's supposed to be a Pretty sunday.
Afternoon AND i THINK i think that is very telling

(28:50):
just in and of itself that people want good. Information
our brains are getting a little chaotic from the mixes
of information we're, getting.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
And it's a it's a time In america and that
in my mid my nearly fifty five years on, Earth
i've never seen where We're And i've had folks that
have a little little more age on them THAT i
do that have said the same thing That he've never
never seen a time when we were when we were more.

Speaker 8 (29:18):
Divided i've lived in three countries AND i will say
the same. Thing And i'm seventy, four So i've been
on the earth a little bit longer than, you but
i haven't seen anything like this.

Speaker 3 (29:28):
Either, Right, well the event is going to be at
The Women's club Of, charleston sixteen Hundred Washington, STREET, Ea
sunday two to four h and your final selling point
for people will start with you, know those elected officials
or just the average person to come to. This patty
will start with, you why should people come to? This
which final was your your final word?

Speaker 5 (29:49):
HERE i THINK i think.

Speaker 13 (29:51):
They'll be among people who want to listen and learn
and participate and make it make a change in the
way things are going.

Speaker 3 (30:01):
Now, BOB i.

Speaker 8 (30:02):
Think we have to we have to really try very
hard to start dialogues rather than. Monologues we have to
start listening to people respectfully and stop just having an
opinion that you don't want to hear the opposite. Of
and that's the intent of this is to give people
a chance to learn and listen and hopefully get something

(30:28):
important out of.

Speaker 3 (30:29):
