We're going to talk to the new executive director Festival,
Zach Harrold, on the show today, and of course he's
been on the show in the past, but when we
first talked to him, he had just taken the role
and was just kind of, you know, getting his feet wet.
A matter of fact, I don't think he had even
walked through the door of the office yet. I think
he was just hired. So now that he's you know,
he's been in the position for a while, a couple
of months or so, we're getting ready for a big
(02:22):
festivall here in Charles. We'll talk to Zach Carrold about that. Plus,

Danny Jones, he's going to reopen his restaurant on Courier
Street in Charleston, and the gentleman who's going to be
taking over, and now let me just state this and
we'll let him talk about it in detail. Danny is
still going to be a big part of the restaurant,
but there's a new guy that it's going to be
taking it over. And he joins this small the Jerick
Construction studios. His name is Ben Noel and he goes
(03:03):
by Bjay and he's here with us now, Ben Bjay,
Benjamin you you over there? How you doing, man, Welcome
to the show.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
Great to be here, Dave, how are you today?
Speaker 4 (03:12):
So you're rocking the Kansas City Chiefs shirt.
Speaker 5 (03:15):
So that strike one Andy Reid fans?
Speaker 4 (03:16):
Stract Well, okay, all right. I like Andy Reid's Okay,
I like the rest of them. And Andy is a
pretty cool coach.
Speaker 5 (03:24):
Course our tight ends getting married.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
I don't know if you've heard, really really they got
They should really put that out there more often. Yeah,
they really should. But appreciate you being here.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Now.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
We'll mention that Danny had planned to be here with
us today, but Danny's got a minor medical procedure, a
dental procedure going on right now. He's fine, he's going
to be there for I guess opening day is tomorrow,
rask tomorrow. It is tomorrow, all right. So I want
to before we get into talking about the restaurant and
how you bringing this thing back, we'll talk about you now.
You've been in the restaurant business for a while, right
(03:55):
about four years now, Okay, and tell us about your
other ventures.
Speaker 5 (03:59):
So I lived and worked in the valley, Kanaw Valley
for twelve years. I was going back home in seventeen
and there was a place in Kanas City that I
grew up a little south of Beckley Poker Daniel's area,
Plade Springs. Gotcha. Yeah, yeah, So I was going back
home and you know, underserved area. Eminem Mark in Kanas
City was an inspiration for us. We wanted to slice
(04:22):
meat fresh and sell it by the pounds, so we
started that way, but over time it just kind of
organically went into the hot sandwiches. So we have become
merchants Deli Grill, and we're opening Beaver right now. We're
down there in the Kroger shopping Plaza, been open and
going on four years in December. But it's been wonderful.
Met a lot of nice people, and you know, I
(04:45):
would talk to Danny along the way. I met Danny
when I was up here. Can I tell you a
quick story, Yeah, you do whatever you want. And I
was here. I broke my foot one summer, so I
go over to Saint Francis to get wrapped up and
everything and put me on crutches and all I could
think about was getting to the mall, on getting my coffee,
my Starbucks. So, you know, I get my cab from
Saint Francis to the mall, I get the Starbucks, I
(05:06):
get my coffee, and I realize I'm on crutches and
I'm holding this cup, and I'm like, man, you should
have thought this through. And I look up and there's
Danny and he said, can I help you? Can I
help you? And that was the most sincere and I said, yeah, man,
I'm just trying to get to the other end of
the mall. I got my taxi waiting on me. He said,
no problem, I'll walk you down there. So he walked
me from it. And what time frame what was this?
(05:26):
This was probably ten eleven, okay, so he was Yeah,
he was still pinstripe suit and his all his glory.
I'd seen him on TV a few times, and you know,
I'd passed him in the mall, but just what a
nice guy did not have to do that. So he
walks me to the tidewater end of the mall and
and help me get in the cab. And then the
driver's like, is that Danny Jones. I'm like, yeah, man,
so you know I would I would, Like I said,
(05:46):
I lived like Bradford and Boulevard, so it was like
three four o'clocks in the mall. I would go get
my coffee in the mornings and he would be down
there with some of the guys, and I would joke around,
say he would be down there holding for and you
know I would. I would set with those some mornings,
and like I said, we became friends. I ended up
moving back home and we would keep up. You know,
I follow him on Facebook and stuff, but I think
(06:08):
I texted him a month or so ago, and and
you know, he used to say, I'm gonna come down
there and show you guys how to make barbecue. And
I joked around, said, man, when are you going to
show us barbecue? He said, why don't you come up here?
And you know I wasn't doing anything that weekend, so
we we we set it up for a Sunday morning,
and you know, I wanted to come up here and
just see him. It's been a while. And man, I
walked through the door and he said this could be yours.
(06:31):
H So you know, didn't anticipate that, but you know,
we kept having conversations and it's led up to this point.
It's it's you know, it's a great business. Like if
you look at the reviews and the Facebook stuff, there
was great fanfare, great product. You know, the business has
a soul, it has a personality. It's him, right, you know,
(06:51):
you go in, you see all that stuff on the wall,
the lives he's lived.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
I told this story the last time we had Danny
on the show. And I was down there having lunch,
and there were some people that were just passing through
the area and had gone on one of the Yelper,
Google reviews or whatever, and they had they discovered Danny's
and so they came down to the barbecue stand on Courrier.
(07:17):
They had no idea who Danny Jones was. And they
see this guy back there, you know, as you said,
holding court even when he's you know, he's behind the register.
He didn't carry that worked with him. And and he's
back there and it's a room full of people, people
waiting for a place to sit, and they just started
looking at it, all the history and all the pictures
that Danny has in his place down there. And of
(07:38):
course these people don't have any ties to West Virginia.
They don't they don't know this was what this street
used to look like in eighteen fifty seven or whatever.
Danny's got hanging up down there, and they were they
were fascinated by the whole thing. And they didn't even
have any ties to this area. And that's the allure
of a place like that. I think a.
Speaker 5 (07:54):
Couple of guys tried the door yesterday and yeah, I
went out and spoke to him there from down near Blacksburg,
and I think they were on their way to Ohio
to do I think he said bow hunting or something, right,
you know, this was their annual trip, and they stopped
by to see Dandy and get some good barbecue. And
you know, I'll let them know they were a day early,
but hopefully maybe we'll catch them on the way, grab
a hotel room we come back tomorrow. That's exactly how
it works. So you know the old way was, you know,
(08:18):
Now people will pass through town and they'll look at
you know, Apple Maps or Google Maps or you know,
and they'll look for something unique to the area. And
then you know, if the reviews are strong, and then
you know, it tells a little bit of story and
they'll want to stop by. They'll want something unique to
the area, and hopefully we'll get some more of that
in the future. Really just now concentrating on the operation.
We're running the same exact play that he used to,
(08:40):
same recipes, same stuff on the wall.
Speaker 4 (08:43):
How difficult was it to learn how to make barbecue
as Danny does? Because Danny tells the story about how
he learned it, and whenever he tells the story, and
God bless Danny, I have to kind of keep my
finger on the button over here. He's not going to
say something he shouldn't say because it's as Danny Jones
we're talking about. But he's told the story man about
how the people that taught him how to do barbecue.
(09:05):
How difficult was it for you to learn his process?
Speaker 5 (09:09):
He's made it very easy and very digestible. It's, uh,
you know, I'm still in that learning process right now.
He's uh describes himself as the consigliarity. He's our advisor
of this organization, so you know he's there. Uh, he's
leading the charge. We're just trying to absorb everything. You know.
The neat thing is as you're learning, he'll he'll just
(09:29):
start talking about something or just start telling a story
or maybe give you a little little piece of the
book you know that's coming out. But it's it's been easy.
It's it's uh, it's a lot different from what we've
we've been doing, but at the same time, it's a
it's a simple process, you know, and we're just trying
to kind of stay consistent and make sure that no
matter what time you come in there, you still get
that same.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Man and you are going to offer the same menu. Correct,
as you said, are there any changes at all? So,
and the thing about Danny's was it it was a
simple menu. I mean, it wasn't loader forward. I mean,
you had the barbecue, and you had the chicken. The
sides were always good. Occasionally he would do a soup,
not every day. He would do some salads. I don't
know whether he's gonna do salad. You guy's gonna do salads? Yes, yes, okay,
(10:11):
God he was kind of Danny's not a big salad
fan because of the time it takes to to prep it.
But he would put the smoke chicken on it. And
that's what I mean. And that's pretty much other than
a bag of chips in a soda, that's pretty much
the entire menu. Right, Well, did I leave anything out?
Speaker 5 (10:27):
You've nailed it. Pulled pork is outstanding, and the ribs
of course correct. So we'll we'll we'll start with that.
And like I said, we're in a we're at a
point now where we just want to make sure that
we absorb everything and we can we can do this
every day consistently, and you know, we'll treat people great. Uh,
you'll be able to come in and spend some time
with him and get some of this really good barbecue.
Speaker 4 (10:47):
And and and Danny is going to he's playing on
being there.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
He's going to be there. He's going to be there.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
He drifts in and out from Timetown, but primarily and
I could use a busy guy still. Well yeah, and
I think, uh, I think you are going to see that.
The Danny is going to be a part of this.
And the thing that I always thought was interesting about
going down there for lunch was that if they weren't
terribly busy, Danny would come from behind the counter and
he would he would sit down there, you know, with
(11:14):
and then a customer would come in and Danny, Danny
would just be I gotta go wait on somebody. I
hold that thought and he would go back turn this.
Maybe this is give him a little bit more time
to to to fellowship with the with with his people.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
He can't help himself, he can't help it. He works
wherever he's that he works. That's going.
Speaker 4 (11:30):

Community Technical College. Your career starts here. Okay, so what
are the hours going to be.
Speaker 5 (11:55):
We're going to start Monday through Friday eleven to six thirty,
which I think is a little later than what what
they originally did, but we're gonna we're gonna start Monday
through Friday. As we get used to the flow of everything.
My goal was to get those weekends open because you
know ribs and football. Yeah yeah, but.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
Now you still have your place in backley correct.
Speaker 5 (12:15):
Yes, So I have a wonderful partner, Brian Merchant. And
then my son also works there, Derek Drafting. So he's
grabbing a bigger chunk of the responsibilities. Uh, and they're
gonna hold that down. I'm going to get this started.
We actually have one of our best associates from down
there is going to join me up here, a guy
named Christian Brown. They call him TC Texas Christ Okay,
(12:37):
guys from Austin, Texas. Okay, you know so I can't
wait for you.
Speaker 4 (12:39):
Guys know a little something about Bart a little bit,
a little bit.
Speaker 5 (12:42):
So like I said, we're going to come up here,
We're going to learn Danny's uh, Danny's way, and we're
going to run that play. Wouldn't have it any other.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
Now, are you prepared for and I know you've already
been down there quote unquote training? Okay, so are you
prepared for Danny look at you and say that's not right,
go back and do it already because you know.
Speaker 5 (12:59):
He will and then wrong. I love I love his directness,
you know, because I know where it's coming from. He's
nothing if not direct. I'll say that about it. Just
tell me what I need to know.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
And he'll tell you.
Speaker 5 (13:08):
We'll go from there.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
He'll tell you for sure. Now I was looking last night.
I know he was. Danny's quite active on social media
and there and there. There hadn't been anything on the
Danny's Barbecue Stand page since he closed, and we of
course broadcast live you know, the day that he could
close down there had to quite a tribute, quite a
picture the walls of the We had a great time
down there. So are you going to continue to have
(13:30):
the social media presents?
Speaker 5 (13:31):
That's the goal. That's a big pin of it, just
to just stay in the front of everyone's mind. But yeah,
that's something that we hope to get back.
Speaker 4 (13:37):
And all right, I got a text here for you. Okay,
any plans for football tailgate meal menus or watch.
Speaker 5 (13:43):
Parties near future? Near future watch parties might be a
little difficult. It's not a lot a lot of room.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
To watch and look, you know what the again and
for those of you that never went to Danny's, I
mean it's it's it's very small.
Speaker 5 (13:56):
Stand for a reason.
Speaker 7 (13:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (13:57):
Yeah, it was called a standard different from the house.
And what I would find is is if you would
go in and maybe you just go in by yourself.
People would just say, hey, would you like to sit
with me? I saw a lot of conversations, and I
saw a lot of discussions, political discussions that we can
still have discussions. By the way, I never saw any
of them get out of hand with people that would
(14:19):
just because it kind of it kind of forces closeness. Okay,
you know, if there's only one seed available and we've
got an extra seat, that okay, we don't know you,
but come over and say with us. I saw a
lot of that.
Speaker 5 (14:29):
Like the old days. Yeah, you know, you get to
know people, and.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
And the sides. I mentioned the sides, and I was
a big fan of the sides. I was your favorite
of the potato salad?
Speaker 5 (14:37):
Really?
Speaker 2 (14:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (14:38):
I like the beans, Yeah, the beans were good. The
only knock and Danny and I had a disagreement about
this one time. The only knock I had on is
I'm a spicy guy, and Danny I would get here,
which kept I think was Frank's red hot was what
was the sauce he had?
Speaker 5 (14:53):
I think?
Speaker 4 (14:53):
And when I would order the barbecue or the baked beans,
he would see me take that and put it on it,
and he would just.
Speaker 5 (15:00):
When you make that face he just shake his head.
Speaker 4 (15:01):
It's like I said, sorry, man, every everything, nearly, if
other than cereal, nearly everything I eat is spicy. I've
always done that way. My dad was that way. I
like spice, and so I'm gonna put Sorry, Danny, I'm
gonna put to I'm gonna put a little little hot
sauce on it. Not because I just like a little kick.
Speaker 5 (15:17):
But that just I don't normally go past like Texas peak.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
Frank you now, maybe well maybe a little higher. But
I'm not a I'm not a Carolina reap.
Speaker 5 (15:26):
You still want to enjoy your line, I don't.
Speaker 4 (15:27):
I don't want to die in the process. I like
some spice, all right, So you're gonna open tomorrow and
everything's good to go tomorrow, you think, I believe so,
and you'll be down there today is still whipping the
stuff up. How much prep goes into that ahead of
time that you don't people don't see because that this
kind of stuff is you know, it does take a
little I mean, everything's made fresh, but there is a
certain amount of we got to get this ready to
(15:49):
go for tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (15:50):
Good amount, and in my opinion, it's the most important
part of the whole operation, right, But yeah, a little bit,
not not too bad. Uh, A lot of that stuff
can he done morning of Yeah, you know what I mean.
So you want to try to keep that balance of
peak freshness, but at the same time have it ready
for you know, potential rush. But a lot of that.
Speaker 4 (16:09):
Are you prepared for tomorrow? Because I mean, we've been
talking about this for about.
Speaker 5 (16:12):
A month, so I to hold onto my seat.
Speaker 8 (16:14):
I think.
Speaker 4 (16:14):
I think the Food Guide, you know, did a piece
in the gazette about it too. So there's gonna be
a lot of people down We're mighty do you need help?
As far as you are you hiring people down there,
You've got you get your staff.
Speaker 5 (16:24):
As of now, I think I'm good. I feel like
in the next few weeks that's gonna that's going to
be a need. So you know, if anybody may be interested,
stop buying meet us. We'd be happy to meet you
and take it from there.
Speaker 4 (16:37):
And the place when it comes in is going to
look exactly the same. The picture's still on the wall
and everything right.
Speaker 5 (16:41):
I wouldn't have it any other way.
Speaker 4 (16:42):
All right, Well, here's another text. Will you take menu
item suggestions for the future?
Speaker 5 (16:47):
Always?
Speaker 4 (16:48):
Always, yes, okay, all right me Jay, We wish you
the best of a low Thank you. We're we're regular then,
although they have me doing this afternoon show noon to three,
that kind of kind of cuts into it. So I
may have to say I may have to call down
there and say, can you send delivery boy Danny up
here to bring me some lunch.
Speaker 5 (17:04):
I would bring it myself. We're there till six thirty,
so you know a little later then, okay, previously, and
I should make it a little easier.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
My wife and I were having this discussion last night
because I used to get things. I live in Putnam
County and I used to pick things up on the way.
I said, well, I could see maybe a night or
still a week. I'll be when I get off the
air here in the afternoon. I get out of here
about four, so I said, I can see me picking
some stuff up bringing it home. So we'll count on that.

Speaker 12 (21:11):
Yeah, it's been a busy first couple of weeks on
the job where we've got our schedule locked down for
our fall event and we're ready to go.
Speaker 4 (21:19):
Explain the concept of Festive Fall for people that don't
know them well.
Speaker 12 (21:23):
Fest of All started as a summertime event arts, dance, music, culture,
and it was just it was such a success that
the organization eventually decided to st start an autumn event
as well, and that has just grown over the years.
Speaker 11 (21:39):
I mean it's and it's you know.
Speaker 12 (21:41):
As as with anything back in the early days, it's
probably ten plus years ago. Started pretty small, but now
we're firing on all cylinders, have a lot of great
stuff on offer.
Speaker 4 (21:49):
All right, well, let's run it all down. I'll let you.
You've got the schedule, so I'll let you just take
it from here and tell Yeah. So the wats and
the winds and the times and whatnot.
Speaker 12 (21:57):
Well, so Festive Fall start arts on October eighth and
runs until the twelfth. I'll hit the high spots because
we got so much stuff going on. If people want
to see the full schedule, they can go to Festival
that's Festival with two l's Festival Charleston dot com. But
we're gonna kick things off with a full moon drum
(22:18):
circle on what we're calling Festifall Eve on Tuesday, October
the seventh. Bring a drum and bang it under the
full moon. We get going in ernest though, the next night,
on Wednesday, October the eighth, with Jeff Shirley's Three Things
the show. This time he's gonna have Bob Thompson, the
pianist for Mountain Stage, the Clay Centers astrophysicist Shannon Silverman.
Speaker 11 (22:43):
Did you know the Clay Center had an astrophysicist?
Speaker 4 (22:45):
Actually I did, Oh you did, Okay, but I I've
never met the person, but actually yeah, I did.
Speaker 12 (22:51):
And community organizer Mavery Davis. They're going to be his
guests on that show and talking about where they got started.
Speaker 4 (22:58):
Well, and I'll tell you them and just jump in
on thus three things if you've never If you've never
seen it, Jeff surely had me do it. I guess
about a year or so ago. And it's really fascinating
to learn people's stories. And I was I was vaguely
familiar with the concept. I had never attended one, though,
I just knew people that had done it, and it
was it was great. You know, they ask you about
your I mean, at least they did with us. It
(23:20):
was like your first your favorites and what was the
future first favorite in future and and it's difficult, you know,
sometimes believe it or not. And you always get these
type a personalities like a Bob Thompson and any of
the others that you mentioned, but sometimes it's difficult to
talk about yourself. Oh yeah, And as somebody who spends
now four hours or more a day of talking. I
(23:42):
had to really think about, you know, because I wanted
to choose my words wisely when I did that.
Speaker 12 (23:46):
What's really interesting is how people interpret that too. Yeah, first,
your favorite, your future, every speaker. And you know, something
I really appreciate about three things is there's no archive.
You can't go on the internet and listen to the
past episodes. It's a moment and Jeff very much wants
to make it. If you weren't there, you missed, you
(24:06):
missed it. And it's such a way to learn the stories.
I mean, you just learned so much about these figures
in town that you think you know, and you just
get an inside look into folks that that you don't
otherwise get a chance. And yeah, I'm sure it is
really strange to be that person opening up, but it's
for the audience.
Speaker 11 (24:26):
It's a really great experience.
Speaker 12 (24:27):
So that's a Wednesday night at seven pm. Thursday, we
have an evening with the West Virginia Dance Company at
the Culture Center Theater that starts at seven point thirty
on Friday. The big ticket event that night is Magnolia Boulevard.
They're a band from Kentucky. They play this mix of
(24:48):
like Southern rock, Del Delta blues, Mayrkana. So if you
like the Tudashi Trucks band.
Speaker 4 (24:55):
Or like, yeah, that's my music.
Speaker 12 (24:57):
Right three concert, Yeah that's my City Center start at
seven point thirty. We also have that night on October
tenth and evening with the poets. The state poet Lauriate
Mark Harshman's going to be over at Taylor Books with
the poet Jesse Graves and some others. Saturday kicks off
probably the most popular event for festival, which is the
(25:19):
Harvest Art Fair that happens at the Capital Market. And
we've got loads of vendors over there, artisans selling their wares.
We've also got live entertainment over there, kids' activities that'll
run from ten am to six pm on Saturday and
then twelve to five pm on Sunday over at the
Capital Market. On Saturday, I'm really excited for this. Actually,
(25:40):
we have both a walking and a bike tour downtown.
They meet at the Lee Street Triangle there just to
check out some public art, some architecture around Charleston. It's funny,
I've lived here just about all my life and you
take a tour like that and you're like, how have
I never noticed this time?
Speaker 11 (26:00):
Yep.
Speaker 12 (26:01):
And then that night City Center Dead, which is a
Grateful Dead tribute show happening at City Center at six
pm with John Ingram's band Dead Center.
Speaker 4 (26:11):
And I got to tell you, I was listening to
Hotline yesterday and they had John Ingram and Larry Gross
on talking about that. Yesterday afternoon. I was driving as
I was driving home, as I was one of the
people that was stuck in traffic because of that vehicle
fire on I sixty four. I had a lot of
time on my hands yesterday, but but I listened to
to John Ingram and Larry Gross on Hotline with Weekly
and Coop yesterday talking about this particular event. And you know,
(26:34):
I'm I'm not a huge Grateful Dead fan. I'm kind
of a casual fan.
Speaker 12 (26:39):
I think there's about two albums I know.
Speaker 4 (26:41):
That I know the big ones, But you know, you
got me excited to listen to of course, anything you
know that that you have when you have John Ingram
and Larry do you have all those guys together, very talentul.
Speaker 12 (26:51):
Larry of course founded best of all back in Theday
John's on our board. I asked John if he needed
a mandolin player for co.
Speaker 11 (26:59):
End of the day.
Speaker 12 (27:01):
I think you might cut me in. So moving on
to Sunday then, as I said, we had the Harvest
Art Fair from twelve to five pm. Over at the
Carriage Trail. We have our Carriage Trail leaf Walk. There's
going to be live performances there, activities for the kids.
That's always really nice. People like to get out and
enjoy the fall foliage. There is a living history display
(27:25):
up at spring Hill Cemetery from one to four that
day as well, where you have reenactors portraying notable Charlestonians
who are buried up there.
Speaker 11 (27:35):
That's pretty cool.
Speaker 12 (27:36):
And they're we're going to end it with Mountain Stage
at seven pm. And that Mountain Stage performance is going
to be a good one, of course. David Mayfield demand
of forgiveness.
Speaker 4 (27:50):
I'm just so.
Speaker 12 (27:51):
I'm excited about East Nash Grass.
Speaker 11 (27:53):
Yeah, I'm a bluegrass fan.
Speaker 4 (27:55):
Yeah, there's there's gonna be a lot of good stuff.
He Now, if you didn't catch all that, as I said,
I completely understand. And we're playing on having you back
on as we get closer, you know, maybe the day
or so before, maybe not day of maybe they or
so before some people can make their plans. Give us
that website social mediums.
Speaker 12 (28:09):
Of all the festival too, els Festival Charleston dot com
and also all of these events are on our Facebook
page as well.
Speaker 11 (28:17):
Facebook.
Speaker 4 (28:17):
And and this is really, as you said, by this
time of year, everybody's already rushing into pumpkin spice weather
right now. Okay, well it's in the mid eighties here
in Charleston today. Fall doesn't officially start this year until
September to the twenty second, so by this time we
we might be in the fall. We'll just have to
kind of wait and see. But regardless, that's you'll see
the pumpkin decorations and all the stuff out there. So
(28:40):
it'd be a good time.
Speaker 12 (28:41):
I would saying yesterday that you know, West Virginia's beautiful
in all seasons, but I really think autumn is when
she shines. And I was going to say festival is
icing on the cake, but it's really the whipped cream
on the pumpkins spice Lottel.
Speaker 4 (28:51):
There you go, There you go. Percent I tell you,
you know, I am I'm really excited about this, and
I'm really excited about and this thing has been great
from day one. But I'm really excited about the energy
that you're bringing to this because I had you on
the show, and again I was telling them, folks earlier,
I think you had just maybe been higher, like a
(29:11):
day or so, it was the day before and yeah,
and so you really hadn't gotten in there yet. You
didn't know where the restrooms were, in the paper towels
were captas. Yeah, but now you've gotten into and so
much work. You talked about your board earlier, Zach, So
much work goes into this.
Speaker 11 (29:26):
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 12 (29:27):
We have such an incredible group of people. I'm just
the executive director, and we have a marketing coordinator who's
fantastically talented. We have a dedicated board, and it's not
just people who like to get together once a month
and sent in a meeting, like working every day to
try to raise money and develop programming and make sure
this organization continues into the next generation here in Charleston.
(29:50):
Because you just think about all the things that festival
has brought to this town over the last twenty years.
It's hard to believe it's been twenty years. But like
things that I've seen in Charleston that like Shakespeare plays
and musical performances and dance performances and art installations. It's
just a little town like Charleston, West Virginia. You know,
(30:11):
I'm been a fan of art since since I was
a little kid. And you think about like Paris in
the twenties with hemingwy Fitzgerald, and you think about like
New York in the eighties with the art scene there.
They all had the same thing in common. There was
it was cheap cost of living, a passionate group of
creative people and people who are willing to support that creativity.
Speaker 11 (30:31):
Charleston has that.
Speaker 12 (30:33):
Like we are right for the one of those kind
of movements. I firmly believe that we just got to
let people know about it.
Speaker 4 (30:39):
Yeah, you're doing a great job, man, and I think
you and your board, I think you guys are going
to turn this thing out and it's going to be
her way to texture somebody. So we should have called
it festival. That is what it's called. It's just when
we're on the radio, it doesn't translate that. Well, it's festive.
The entire thing's fest of all, but this particular event
is first.
Speaker 12 (30:57):
To fall well What's funny is I was working the
Charleston Daily Mail when this event, the Fall event happened,
and it originally was called Festival Fall, and I remember
sitting in the newsroom and we were all going, why
didn't they just call it Festivall And then like, I
think the next year, I think that organizing I didn't
have any input the organization at all that I think
(31:17):
the next year they were like, we should just call
this Festive Fall. So, yeah, that is. It's kind of
a tongue twister, but that is. That is what the
event is called Festive Fall.
Speaker 4 (31:25):
And it's but the main website though is Festive All,
Festival All Festival Charleston dot com and you're all over
the social media as well as Zach. It's been a
pleasure having a show today. Man, I'm excited about this thing.
October the eighth through the twelfth and Charleston again. These
things are going to be all over town, just like
Festival is. So you need to follow the social media
the website to see specifically where each event is going
(31:46):
to be. But it's it's going to be four days
or so of big doings here in the.
Speaker 12 (31:50):
City, five days and a lot of that stuff is walkable,
so you can do one thing at the carriage Trail
and walk down.
Speaker 11 (31:56):
We're even going to have KRT shuttles.
Speaker 12 (31:58):
Going from the Carriage Trail over to spring Hill Cemetery.
I mean, it's it's just completely accessible. A lot of
the stuff is free, which I love about Festival. Just
you know, it's expensive to go out and do stuff
with your family, but not when it comes to our stuff.
We're trying to give it to as many people as possible.
Speaker 4 (32:18):
All right, Zach, I appreciate you being on the show.
The executive director of Festive All and Festive Fall October eighth,
twelfth in Charleston, Zach Carld appreciate it, man, and we'll
have you on again as we get closer to the event.

much more than just a pianist for Mountain Stage. That's
just one of the things that Bob Thompson. And I'm
sure the Zach didn't mean anything by that. It's I mean,
we all recognize the genius that is Bob Thompson. I
mean we have Bob Thompson on the show. I think
he's been on the show twice and maybe once on
the network show, maybe once on a local show once before.
And I'm gonna tell you, the guy just has such
(35:32):
a presence. And I know somebody see around Charleston all
the time. Very few people I'm kind of in awe
of when I'm around them, but Bob Thompson is one.
Maybe it's because I'm a frustrated musician that doesn't have
a lick of actual musical ability. I've tried, tried to
be a piano player, tried to be a guitar player
like my dad wasn't happening, And I'm just in awe
(35:56):
of people like that, so that maybe that's why I
get into radio so I can hang out with people that.
But yeah, I mean, that's one of the things Bob
Thompson is known for. Uh and uh, but yeah, he's
definitely an icon and Charleston, you are one correct about that.
Coming up on tomorrow's show, can Not Candy, commission President
Ben Selango's here along with the Vice Mayor of the
City of Saint Alban's Jared Page. We got some exciting
(36:18):
things going on in Saint Albans that mister Page is
going to talk about. Plus Solango and I are planning
on double teaming Jared Page tomorrow because tomorrow begins the
NFL season and the favorite NFL team of may you
know that of me as the Dallas Cowboys. It's also
(36:40):
the favorite NFL team of Commissioner Solango. So we're gonna
take on uh, mister Page's team, the defending Super Bowl
champion in Philadelphia Eagles. All right on Thursday Night football.
And I mentioned this earlier. I'm going to be m
seeing an event tomorrow night. I'll I mean, I think
(37:00):
I mentioned on the air once before, but my alma mater,
Logan High School has their annual Hall of Fame game
on Friday night, and on the Thursday night before the
Friday night game, they induct people into the Hall of Fame. No,
I'm not being inducted, but I am going to serve
as an MC and so it's an event I've done
for well over ten years and they bring me back
(37:22):
to the hometown. Actually the event is not held in Logan.
It's held at the Logan Country Club, which oddly enough,
is in Chappinville. As soon as I get off the
air tomorrow, I'll be heading down there help and wrap
up the golf tournament, and then I'll be doing the
dinner and seeing the dinner tomorrow night. But with all
due respect to I think there's four people going in
the Hall of Fame down there this year. I am
(37:44):
going to make this the quickest speech ever because I
got to get back in the vehicle so I can
listen to the Cowboys game all right on my way
back home to Tady's Valley. But anyway, so yeah, we'll
have a Commissioner Selango, and the vice the vice vice
president of and I'm sure he would have liked that.
Though the Vice Mayor, Jared Page, will be on the
show more. Also, Danny Boyd is going to join us tomorrow. Danny,
(38:08):
of course, is a true Western treasure. He's out with
a brand new book and we're gonna talk about that
within tomorrow. Plus on tomorrows show, we're gonna have details

Over the last couple of days, Uh, there has been
a lot of a lot of talk about the health
(39:56):
of President Donald Trump. We had a text into midday
show on Open Mind, West Virginia yesterday when somebody said
something to the effect of I really hope that what
was I think the exact wordy was. I hope that
the media and you know, I love that term is
as rough on Donald Trump as what they were on
Joe Biden. Well, I mean, I don't know that it
(40:17):
was being rough on Joe Biden, but it was pretty
obvious that Joe Biden was in decline for a long time,
well before the debate. I mean, the debate last summer
was what really put it on full display that the
Democrats had to move on. Somebody should have figured that
out well before then. And look, if that becomes the
case with Donald Trump, I would say the same thing.
(40:38):
And you know me, I'm not a Trump supporter, Okay,
I do think it was very interesting that we made
such a big deal out of Joe Biden's age and
not as much about Donald Trump's. But there was a
lot of unbiased talk, okay, because there is unbiased stuff
out there, you just got to look to find it.
Not talking about CNN or MSNBC or even Fox News.
(41:02):
I'm talking about actual unbiased chatter online from people and
from news sources saying the president President Trump is is
not looking well and acting well and sounding well. They
say so anyway, that's neither here nor there. So I
appreciate the appreciate the text. Text says you won't be
inducted into the Hall of fame, but you could be indicted.

came out of it. And this has just been a
I guess a week's worth of of folks and programming
coming out just saying what an incredible human being that
Tim Armstead was. And even when here's what I like
about it. Even people who did not agree with him
at all politically all said the same thing about what
(42:37):
a decent human being that Tim Armstead was. And so
it was a fitting service held in the House chambers

yesterday about Girls Night Out, off again, on again, off again.
Going back to July, the Charleston YWCA YWCA announced that
they would be canceling the annual Girls' Night Out event,
which is, you know, raised money for the Resolved Family
(43:20):
Abuse program. The new CEO there had said then that
the event was quote going back to its roots and
remembering its mission end quote. And I read that to
mean smaller gatherings and smaller events. At least it's the
way I took it. The plan I was told was
to have small gatherings the first Friday of every month,
(43:40):
with the host of the event providing a tool that
would include survivor stories, mission videos, conversation guides, fundraising materials, etc. Now,
according to the story I'm thirteen, the first one has
now been canceled because it didn't sell enough tickets. It
was to have taken place this Friday night at the
Hail Center Downtown. Social media posts that in part quote
(44:02):
with heavy hearts, we are canceling Fridays Girls' Night Out
for this Friday. Tickets didn't sell as needed and without sponsors,
we can't solely carry the cost to put on the
event end quote, and tickets will be refunded, according to
the post, and for their part, the Hail Street Center
told thirteen News it was including the story that they
do not have any future events scheduled with them, talking
(44:24):
about the Hale Street Center doesn't have any future event
schedule with the YWCA, but would love to work with
them now no comment from the folks with the YWCA

(47:19):
three five five zero zero eight text says OMG. Of
every segment on the show this morning, not one had
anything to do with Trump. A despicably insane texter whose
daily focus is on nothing but blind hatred of him
is exactly what Trump derangement syndrome sounds like. Boys and
girls say's a texture tex says is obvious. Trump is
(47:43):
a sex abuser in pedophile yet Republicans pretend he's not,
and journalists don't care. Country's broken morals do not matter. Also,
Republicans have no honor or integrity. If you didn't hear
yesterday's local show, I'd urge you go back and listen,
which I always urge to go back and listen, And
the unfortunate event you may miss a second of this
show daily. You can check out the podcast on all
the social media, the website, so on and so forth.
(48:04):
I had the chief of staff for Mayor Goodwin, Matt Sutton,
on the show yesterday and a Texter had asked about
the future of the Town Center, and Aaron Parker turned
it into a story posted this morning wv Metronews dot com.
Mister Sutton says, the city has been having good conversations
with the whole group. Now that's the owners of the
town Centers. And you know, if you think about it,
(48:26):
when the whole group took over the mall in twenty
twenty one, Sears and Macy's have been demolished. The final
anchor of the mall, JC Pennies closed. We all know
about tide water, so on and so forth, and look,
you know first part. Matt Sutton on the show yesterday
says the mall will never be what it was once
and I agree. The future of the mall is not
(48:47):
full on retail establishment. Of course, the sports center someone
on Hold two. It's kind of the baby of County
Commission President Ben Selango and others. So that Commissioner Selango again,
We'll be on the local show tomorrow to talk about it.
And Sutton said yesterday that the sports complex is tied
directly to what's going on at the mall, and a
quote from mister Sutton directly from yesterday's show, We're working
(49:09):
through not only some additional funding opportunities that we have,
but also what the future of the mall and the
property is going to hold in quote interesting stuff. And
while we all would like the mall to go back
to its former glory, think Pica Day Christmas nineteen eighty
seven is using that as an example. I mean, that
(49:30):
is simply not going to happen. The city of Charleston
knows that, and the whole group knows that. And I've
said this for some time. One store one restaurant is
not going to change that. And I'm sorry, with all
due respect to my former producer Caitlin Murphy who was convinced,
(49:53):
love to death that Dave and Busters would save the
Town Center. It's not nor any other one or two businesses.
And the text lines always light up when we talk
about this, Well bring this in. Ain't nothing gonna work
under the current model. One store one restaurant is not
gonna work. And and I've said since day one, I
(50:17):
am all on board with the Sports Complex, have been
since day one. Pair it up with a few more
smaller establishments, maybe a restaurant or to a simple food
court kind of a place, a concert area, And of
course we still had the desperty for more hotels. And
(50:39):
I think you could have a winner, I really really do.
But the future if you are holding your breath saying
we're gonna open up X store. Everybody in this whole
country's crazy about BUCkies now, and for the life of me,
I visited one a couple of weeks ago. I don't
know why, but I'm glad i went. You know, I
got the experience, you know, because there's nothing like camping
fresh brisket at seven o'clock in the morning. You know,
(51:02):
everybody's in love with it now. Even if you put
one of those in there, which is not gonna happen,
it's not gonna say not in its current set. That's
that's the future of it. And I am glad I
like the vision of the City of Charleston and the
County Commission and others have for it right now, because
I think that's what the future is. Tex says the
only hold on to me.
Speaker 5 (51:23):
Back up.
Speaker 4 (51:24):
I care about my country. That's why I text in
Trump's failures so Dave can read them and maybe so
they might sink into thick maga heads. Unlikely but wishful
thinking to preserve what's great about our country. The only
people who are deranged are people who support the fraudster,
pedophile Donald Trump, TJ. Meadows. Neither of those things. That
(51:45):
is what it's right now.
Speaker 17 (51:46):
They don't want to save them all. They want to
redevelop the land. That's how they make money. That's what
these groups do. They go in, they buy distressed assets
and look at that. They keep one or two anchors
until it's done. Look at the history. I mean, that's
what this company does well. I mean, the company's all
over amer can do it and make a lot of
money doing it. So their deal is to bring something
completely new, demolish the building that's there. It's the value
(52:06):
is the land and they'll sell the land to somebody
and they'll make their money.
Speaker 4 (52:09):
I mean.
Speaker 17 (52:09):
So yeah, if you think the town center's coming back,
I got some property I want to sell you.
Speaker 4 (52:15):
Let me get this in here. If you need to
protect that property with a valence shown five of elves
