have been some gusty thunderstorms from time to time. I'm
rolling in, So just just use caution, all right, if

Speaker 6 (02:54):
I'm well, Dave, thank you for having me.
Speaker 7 (02:56):
How are you?
Speaker 4 (02:56):
And I'm doing finding on the phone with us. We
have Knaw County commission President of Ben Selango. Good morning, sir,
Good morning, and all right, so we're going to get
to some more serious stuff your moment, jellan, Ben, I
know you're very busy, so well may cut you loose
a little bit early. NFL opens up tonight. We got
(03:16):
the world's biggest Dallas Cowboy fan in me and possibly
the second biggest Dallas Cowboy fan in you, Commissioner. The
only reason your second is because I'm older than you are.
That's the only reason.
Speaker 7 (03:30):
Dave, I don't think.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
So okay, okay, Well, I mean, do you want to
give your age, I'll give mine. Well, I know I
don't look at, but I'll be fifty five here in
a couple of weeks. I know, I know, Ben, I
don't look at That's exactly what you're saying, right anyway,
spoken like a true attorney. All right, Jared Page is
with it, and I just want to let you know.
(03:52):
A Page comes into the studio this morning, Ben wearing
this god awful Eagles garbage on his chest. Just so
you know, normally on I always wear Cowboys gear. However,
I am m seeing an event tonight. So I'm gonna
be headed back down to my homeland tonight to MC
the Logan High Hall of Fame dinner. So I got
to change into something else, and I'm gonna miss a
(04:14):
little bit of the game. I will be listening to it, though.
It's gonna be the shortest Hall of Fame ceremony you've
ever seen. I'm gonna say congratulations, here's your plaques. We
got to go, and I don't hit the road so
I can listen to the game. But come game time tonight,
I will have the Cowboys gear on.
Speaker 7 (04:26):
Ben Oh. Absolutely. You know what, if I would have
known Jared was coming in the studio, I would have
dusted off my Rogers Stallbach or my Danny White jersey. Ah.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Nice, Jared, Do you want to comment on that? Before
we get anything serious here, I.
Speaker 6 (04:37):
Can just only think about Super Bowl ring and a
banner being held or put up in the stadium tonight.
That's something that Dallas hasn't experienced in a long time.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
So we'll just leave it at that. You know, we
got five of them. I'm just saying. Unfortunately, somebody said
the other I saw I read this online. Somebody said
about the Cowboys they said the Cowboys. No Cowboy fan
hand ever seen a game on a flat screen TV.
I saw that and.
Speaker 7 (05:05):
It was funny. And I don't think we'll be watching
it this year either, after the recent trade of Mike
and Parsons. And you know, we've got a lot of
new stuff going on, new defensive coordinators, coach, everything's new there,
So I don't And I wonder if the Mike and
Parsons trade was almost a concession by Jerry Jones that
(05:28):
this is not going to be a very good season.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
Look, I supported the trade. I mean, and I know
not a lot of Cowboys fans will say that, but
I will. He didn't want to be there. He made
some very disparaging comments about his teammates. Say what you
want about Jerry Jones, but once you start, you know,
take a crap on your teammates, be gone with you.
And there's some question as to whether he's going to
play this week anyway because he's hurt. So there, there
you go, all right, So we'll get we can talk
(05:51):
about it a little bit later on.
Speaker 7 (05:52):
Ben.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
I know you're on a limited schedule, so I'm gonna
let I'm gonna talk to you a little bit and
then then we'll talk to Jerry.
Speaker 8 (05:57):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
The last couple of days has been a lot of
talking the show about the town Center and about sports complex,
you know, and it's just one of the one of
the things we talk about a lot. What can you
tell us right now about the sports center? Are we
still on this on this pause right now?
Speaker 7 (06:11):
Yeah? You know, And as I've said, we are cautiously optimistic.
You know, we were you give an ear mark last year,
and unfortunately the budget didn't pass in Congress and we
didn't get our ear mark. That's not the fault of
Senator Capito, That's certainly not the fault of Senator Justice.
It's just the way that it played out. So we
(06:33):
have put in an additional earmark the city has and
also the county has, and if we get either one
of those, I think it's full steam ahead. And so
that's why I say we're cautiously optimistic. You don't know
if you're going to get the ear mark or not.
I think it really depends on a lot of different things.
And then hopefully, if the ear marks are awarded, Congress
will be able to pass a budget and that money
will come through. I think that we have you know,
(06:57):
Senator Capital is on appropriation. Senator Justice knows words tourism
better than anyone, So I think they get it. I
think they understand the concept. I certainly think that they've
they have the ability to bring in a lot of money,
but it has been very tenuous over the last you know,
eight to twelve months about budgeting and those types of things.
(07:20):
So I'm gonna sit back and watch and wait and
hope is what I'm doing at the moment.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Sorry, I turned my microphone off there and we had
Matt Sutton, the chief of staff for the Goodwin administration,
been on the show a couple of days Agoiner and
the City of Charleston. I'm sure you and the commission
will somehow probably be a part of that as well,
because I mean, when you start talking about this proposed
Capital Sports Complex, Commissioner, the town Center and what is
(07:48):
the future of the town Center is a major component
of that.
Speaker 7 (07:51):
It absolutely is. I mean you're talking about twenty acres
give or take in downtown Charleston, and so you've got
the town Center that ocut because that it's mostly vacant.
We certainly did not anticipate it going this way when
the Whole Group took over. But I know that there's
discussions between Whole and the city, and we're encouraging that
(08:12):
hopefully they can reach some agreement on the future of
the town Center. I said from day one. You know,
it's been three years ago since we announced this. I
said from day one, the sports complex was never designed
to save the Charleston Town Center. It would take a
lot more than a sports complex. I think you've got
different you know, buying habits have changed. You've got Amazon,
(08:33):
you know that came in. You've got people now going
out quarter G. There's no if we had a Walmart
or a Target or Low's or something like that downtown
in the sports or in the town center, I think
that would be different. People would come down and then
we'd visit the other stores, visit the restaurants. That's not
the way this worked out. So you know, they've got
(08:55):
some big issues to deal with. But we've got the
right people in place, and I know that that mayor
good one is she thinks about this every single day,
I promise you, and so does Matt Sutton and her
entire team.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
All Right, before we let you go, did you guys
actually have you and mister Page here, who's in the
studio of me, have some sort of a bet about
this Eagles Cowboys game to night Commissioner.
Speaker 7 (09:17):
My recollection, Dave was that we had a bet about
his alma mater, Saint Albans, and my alma mater, Shady
Spring Tigers in their high school football premiere last week,
and mister Page could probably the Vice mayor Page could
remind everyone what happened in that game.
Speaker 6 (09:34):
Yeah, that is that is correct.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
Well, I will honor that wager.
Speaker 7 (09:40):
There was, you know, it.
Speaker 6 (09:41):
An opening game little Russ for Saint Albans, and you know,
somehow we let Shady Spring win that game. But you
know so, so I will gladly uh uh one hundred
parcentt affirm that is true now. But you know, we
Saint Almas had a lot of things on her mind,
got the Battle of the Bridge tomorrow night, so kind
(10:02):
of overlooked the Shady Spring a little bit. But I
will honor that bet. But as far as this evening goes,
there's been no official okay wager, Yeah, there was a
talk about that.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
All right, Well let's just do it.
Speaker 7 (10:16):
So the Eagles are favored by eight and a half
and the over unders forty seven and a half. So
you give me Dallas and ten points.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
How about that, I'll give you that. We'll tell I'll
give you all right, we got it. We got this.
Maybe the first time that a vice mayor and a
county commissioner I've ever placed a bet on television, on radio,
one of my on radio. But by by the way,
this is fun. There's nothing actually going on here, so
I just it's just a fun little bet. Hey, Commissioner,
I know you got to go. I appreciate you. Stake time,
Mandy your schedule talk soon, man, Thanks a lot.
Speaker 7 (10:47):
Hey, thanks, don't see yea.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
All right, Jared, I want to talk about some things
going on in Saint Albans. Saw a news report that
you guys are establishing a PODA out there, much similar
to Charleston and some other areas. Talk about that and
explain that.
Speaker 6 (11:00):
Yes, sir, so this past it's been a couple of
Saturdays ago we had our first PODA event. This was
something that when I got elected, I wanted to bring
to Saint Omas. We've seen the success that places like
Charleston Huntington has had with our PODA and our first.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
Explain for those that don't know. I mean it's a
it's a it's a it's an outdoor designated area. Explain
that what PODA is for those that may not.
Speaker 6 (11:23):
Know, Yes, this public outdoor designated area. Essentially, you have
it's a parameter area that's marked by signs and the
participating businesses that sell the alcohol or adult beverages. You
have a cup that is specifically will say PODA cup
and you could purchase that at those businesses and then
you'll go in to those businesses to to purchase your
(11:47):
drink or whatever. The hope that we we had that
we saw this past week was that when people would
go in to purchase those cups, they would also purchase
different items. Uh you know for example, co River Coffee,
they want to purchase pastries or shuckers if they want
to purchase shrimper, little appetizer, crab stuff, mushrooms, yes my
(12:10):
favorite there. I don't do seafood. Love shuckers go there frequently,
but I can't do the seafood. But whatever they want
to purchase, that they would also purchase that and it
would help our businesses out. We saw that from just
about every business that participated. And also it's a little
different than our some of our past festivals which are
(12:30):
under the multi vendor which is on the street. You
can't take the cup inside. There's also businesses that may
not sell alcohol but welcome you to come into their
to their business. And we had three of our first
event that were allowing people with the cups to come
in so you know, they could purchase other materials or
(12:51):
you know, one of them was a little bit of
having cupcakes, so you go in there and purchase a
cupcake or pastry on top of of you know, they
don't sell the alcohol, but there you know, they had
West Virginia themed cupcakes. So we it's an economic development
tool that I really worked well with the city of
Charleston and establishing our PODA and I have heard nothing
(13:18):
but good things from Charleston.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
So when I and there's been zero issues in Charleston
because a lot of the and this has happened in
other towns here people have been concerned about you know,
you're gonna have all kinds of problems and things that
there have been zero issues that I'm aware of in Charleston.
The other cities that have done this around there's there's
no there's no issues.
Speaker 6 (13:35):
There's been no issues. We had zero issues in Saint
Albans I've actually studied this for multiple years, going back
to Dora in Ohio. Ohio now was the first area
to do this. There's been no no issues at all.
I mean, you may have a little issue here and there,
but and again, this is something not I've heard a
(13:55):
few comments on social media.
Speaker 9 (13:59):
This is not a.
Speaker 6 (14:02):
Way to promote alcohol or promote drinking. This is an
economic development driver to where our businesses are going to succeed.
They're going to sell more items, and it's a way
for individuals to come to our community see what we
have to offer that may not have been to our
community before. I ran into several this past week the
(14:23):
other weekend that had never been to Saint O's beloved it,
enjoyed it and plans on coming back because they had
never been into Shuckers to tap all the cafe Cowriver
Coffee and they really liked it, enjoyed it, and they
want to come back. So that's what we want to do.
We want to promote business. That's what this is a
vehicle for and you know, we look forward to doing
(14:45):
it more in the future. We actually have another pote
of events schedule for September nineteenth, at seven o'clock there's
going to be live music. Chris Sutton and Soul Mountain
will be performing there on Main Street. Street will be
shut down and and there at Joe Dobbs Square. Go in,
get your drink and then come back out and enjoy
(15:06):
the live music.

You that later.
Speaker 6 (16:00):
But those are kind of our big things. And obviously
we have our Christmas celebration and all those dates and
information will be coming out soon. But we have a
lot of stuff going on. We'll have a lot of
pride in our community and big Battle of the Bridge
tomorrow night.
Speaker 4 (16:13):
I'm hopeful.

I feel good about it, but then again, you never know.

about the lovely and talented Mayor st Albans Clinton. I
(19:39):
got my cities mixed up so as I had Jared
Page in here. Kay Summers is here. How you doing, Mayor?
Speaker 11 (19:44):
I'm doing well? Thank you for having us. We really
appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (19:47):
And also Carrie Sloan Myer is here too. How are you.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
I'm good, Thank thank you for having us.
Speaker 4 (19:51):
Thank you both for being here. So either one of
you it's been let me before we get to this
big event. You've had a lot of stuff going on
here in Clinton and here lately, Mayor talk about it.
Speaker 7 (20:00):
We really have.
Speaker 11 (20:00):
But the most important I think, thing that's happened. There's
a lot of important things that have happened, but we
got a grocery store after nine years. But you know,
I want, David, I want to tell you about that
because you have a little hand in being responsible, just
a little bit, all right. We my husband and I
were at Danny Jones's root place here on Choyer Street
(20:21):
one day and all you guys were there, Tim Morris
and everybody, of course Glenn knew all of you. And
I was complaining I didn't have a grocery store, I
think to you. And there was a gentleman with you
guys who does all the house and work, all the
mechanical and engineering things, and he was there and you
introduced me to him, and I said, we need a
(20:44):
grocery store in Clinton. And that was about six years
ago and we've got it.
Speaker 4 (20:50):
So I had no idea that I am responsible for that.
So can I have a section of the store named
after me? Now you cannot like like the potato chip
section or something like that.
Speaker 12 (20:58):
This is maybe the potato wadget. They're really good, really tasty.
Speaker 4 (21:03):
What's the response been to this.
Speaker 11 (21:05):
It's been fantastic. And we had a road cutting this
past week on Wednesday, and the people it was all
the people came from corporate office. But the nice thing
about this company your employee owned, and so therefore all
the employees and the president and all the management team
(21:25):
came and it was fantastic. And every day the parking
loss full because you know, it's been so long. And
one thing idea I want to say, we did have
a save a lot up outside the town limits. And
what people don't understand that doesn't benefit Clinton. We for
economic growth, economically, we have to have the business in
(21:46):
the town limits. And now it is and it's a
lot bigger, a lot bigger selection and every and it's
pretty and it's clean and it's nice and we're thrilled.
Speaker 4 (21:55):
Talk about it. But before we move on, just talk
about how important it is to have have that store
in Clinton and Mayor.
Speaker 11 (22:01):
Well for so many years. For nine years, we haven't
had that.
Speaker 4 (22:06):
Since the flood.
Speaker 11 (22:07):
Since the flood, we haven't had that revenue coming in
and that really hurts a lot. So that revenue is
going to make up and help us. And like I
say that, this store also feeds like the three counties
can all clay Rome and before the flood it was
one of their top revenue stores. So this is really
(22:28):
really important to us. And I appreciate every car on
the parking lot.
Speaker 4 (22:32):
And people, again, you can't stress enough the importance.
Speaker 11 (22:35):
Of their top revenue stores. So this is really really
important to us. And I appreciate every car on the
parking lot.
Speaker 4 (22:42):
And people, again, you can't stress enough the importance of
having it inside city limits.
Speaker 11 (22:48):
That's so we can have all the things that we
need to have to operate the down.
Speaker 4 (22:51):
Which means that you can do the things you got
to do. But it also means you have time and
some funds for some fun things too, which is what
we're here to talk about. So tell us about Carrie,
and start with you. Tell us about this great event
going on Saturday.
Speaker 12 (23:04):
Well, this is our fifth year of chilling on the
Elk and we feature a chili cook off, ICs and
non ICs competitions. That's actually our biggest draw is the
chili cook off. People love it, the cooks love it.
They usually go home with no chili at the end
of it. We do have a craft beer and wine festival.
(23:25):
It features a lot of West Virginia wines, local breweries.
There are a couple from Kentucky that are coming in
this year. And then we have live entertainment. We've got
four bands lined up for the day. We have a
complimentary kids area, and arts and crafts vendors will be
lined up on the streets selling their homemade goods.
Speaker 4 (23:47):
And that's all. This happens right in the heart of Clinton.
Speaker 12 (23:49):
Right on Main Street and Elk Avenue, right in front
of the Doctor Harper stage.
Speaker 3 (23:53):
That was what finished four years ago.
Speaker 4 (23:56):
Yeah, four years And here's the thing about it, for
those that may not have been familiiliar with Clinton, and
I spent a lot of time there in a previous job.
And if you went back, of course, the flood was
in twenty sixteen. I mean, if you went back in
twenty eighteen, twenty nineteen, you would have never thought something
like that. I mean folks were there were trying, Don't
(24:16):
get me wrong. I mean they were trying. But to
see how far this city has come since that time
is truly amazing, and I think it has something. I
think it really speaks to the hard work, determination, so
on and so forth of the people of Clintenna, led
by the mayor. Of course, carry's the one that pointed
at you, by the way it is.
Speaker 12 (24:38):
You know, I'm a lifelong resident of Clinton, and I
grew up just outside of the town limits and spent
many many years going to festivals and going to Dalton's
and the Dairy Queen and you know, being in downtown.
And for a very long time the town had become.
Speaker 3 (24:58):
Stagnant, and even a little bit before the flood.
Speaker 12 (25:02):
Really and you know, since Kay and the new I'm sorry,
Mayor Summers and the new I've known her since I
was a little girl.
Speaker 3 (25:10):
She's still so she's still okay, you know.
Speaker 12 (25:15):
And the town council they've done a lot to make
Clinton an appealing and try to bring back what it
once was. And that takes hard work and it takes time,
and it doesn't happen overnight.
Speaker 4 (25:31):
The speak event's going to be happening on Saturday. Do
want to remind you that the Dave Allen Show on
five eighty Live is brought to you in part by
Pinnacle Consultants. They're lead paint inspection risk assessment services designed
to identify and to assess the presence of lead based
paints and buildings and other structures using a three phase
approach of inspection, sampling and lab analysis and an assessment report.
To check out Pinnacle Corp dot net. Because what you
don't know can hurt you. Let's talk about the ticketing
(25:54):
for this. I show up with the family, I want
to sample some chili I want to take How does
that work?
Speaker 3 (25:59):
Well, general admission is free.
Speaker 12 (26:02):
You can come, you can enjoy the free kids area,
shop the craft's arts and vendors, listen to the music
that's free. If you want to sample beer and wine,
that's thirty five dollars and an ID check required at
the gate. And if you want to sample chili, that's
thirty tickets for twenty dollars.
Speaker 4 (26:20):
Okay, And so you can just sample. I mean, I
guess we're like it's right out of the cup, you
know kind of a thing.
Speaker 12 (26:26):
Well, what happens is is you'll take your tickets and
you'll go to the cook and the cook will give
you a two ounce sample of their chili, and then
you get to vote on your favorite chili. Okay, so
there's a people's Choice award, which is a pretty big.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
Competition among the coke, no doubt.
Speaker 12 (26:44):
So more bragging rights. It's a really a family friendly event, Harry,
I think we.
Speaker 11 (26:53):
Need to mention. I think it's really sort of nice.
The basketball team, Herbert Hoover High School basketball team has
entered this year. I think the fire department uh is
the chief.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
Yeah, yeah, well.
Speaker 12 (27:05):
Chief he cooks every year, you know. And then we
will have programs from Hoover. We have a walk run
in the morning, a five k, the Dave day Fields
Memorial five k. It's called the Chili Chase that all
the proceeds for that actually benefit the Herbert Hoover HUH
School athletic boosters.
Speaker 4 (27:26):
Awesome.
Speaker 12 (27:26):
We I secure a sponsor for that and then all
of the proceeds all goes to them. We also encourage
the Hoover groups to come up and set up and
show their products, display what they do, or sell something
to help raise money for their individual programs and.
Speaker 11 (27:43):
Their athletic director Richard Parsons does a fantastic job with that,
he really is. But we the town of Clinton, we
are part of Hoover. A lot of our children go there,
as you know, and we are big supporters. We try
to support them in every event and then they enter
and come to our town too.
Speaker 4 (28:01):
Well a big part of it. But you know, the
thing about it is when you have these events like this,
it's great that brings the town out, but it brings
people from around the surrounded areas Charleston, South Charleston, Saint Albans,
wherever into your town to see what you've got going.
Speaker 11 (28:14):
It's right and we like that and we send out
flyers as you know. I've sent you a couple out
to different people, and they do come up. They come
to town that weekend and some of them want to stay.
They stay in our airbnb's and make a weekend of it.
And Carrie keeps talking about the children place. It's really nice.
We have a lot of inflatables. Poka Valley Banks sponsors
(28:37):
that and it's an aggressive area and it's really nice
and very secure. So I'm proud of that too.
Speaker 4 (28:44):
What time does everything start? On Saturday?
Speaker 3 (28:46):
Eleven am? And it goes till five.
Speaker 4 (28:49):
Okay, Now, if somebody is listening right now and they
want to enter the chili competition, can they still do that?
Speaker 3 (28:53):
They sure can.
Speaker 12 (28:54):
They can go to our website it's Chilling on the
Elk and that's chi l in on theelk dot com
and they can enter through that, or they can email
me at Chillin on Theelk at gmail dot com.
Speaker 4 (29:09):
And I'm just looking at your flyer here. You get
so many sponsors. I don't want to get into because
I'll leave someone out accidentally. But you can't do it
without the support of the community, and not just after
people in Clinton and the people outside Clinton, because you
look at the sponsor that there's people that that aren't
in Clindon.
Speaker 12 (29:24):
A majority of my sponsors come from outside of Clinton,
and they come from Charleston and even I've got a
few that are larger than that. You know, you can
see there's a few corporations. I do have a few
of my local companies that support me every year, and
I can't thank them enough for their sponsorships every year
(29:45):
because without it, I couldn't put this event.
Speaker 4 (29:49):
And the weather folks say that we're going to have
some rain, maybe late Friday night, overnights, but by by
Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon. As of right now, it's actually
looking pretty good.
Speaker 12 (30:00):
I know Brandon Stover would not promise me great weather,
but he did say that it looks like it's going
to be a nice fall afternoon.
Speaker 4 (30:09):
Yeah, and that goes perfectly with the chili, right it does.
Speaker 11 (30:13):
Hey, Dave, I'd like to say one thing which he
talks about the sponsors. This is what people don't understand either.
We're a small country town, but we come to Charleston
to do see our lawyers, see our doctors, go to
the hospital. So love our money. What little bit of
money people have, we come to Charleston, we spend it.
And so it's very nice to the people in Charleston
(30:35):
recognize that we're part of their customer and client people too.
So we depend on Charleston's business because that's where.
Speaker 4 (30:42):
We go exactly right, Hey Mayor, it's always a pleasure
to see you. Congratulations on the new grocery store up there.
Speaker 12 (30:48):
Thank you.
Speaker 11 (30:50):
Well, is Danny opening something.
Speaker 4 (30:53):
Danny opens today I'm wanna talk about. Yeah, he's opening
up well, listen, you need to thank him though.
Speaker 11 (30:57):
I gave him a.
Speaker 4 (30:58):
Big I promised that he's like, because now Danny is
opening up, well he's back. He's he's got another gentleman
I had on the show yesterday as a guy from
Beckley named bj knowle H. He's got a very successful
restaurant now in Beckley, but he's taken over Danny's. But
Danny's is still a part of it. So if you
go down there, they're set to open at eleven this morning.
(31:19):
And I haven't heard any differentation. It's same place.
Speaker 3 (31:22):
It's just like a door down.
Speaker 4 (31:23):
Yeah, it's the same.
Speaker 13 (31:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (31:25):
And it's the same motif, all the old pictures and
everything that Danny had up there. I mean, the guy's
not changing a single thing. Danny has, you know, taken
him under his wing and showed him how to make
the barbecue and all the sides that go along with it. Uh,
and he's gonna open it schedule to open at eleven
o'clock this morning. So I'm glad to know mayor former mayor,
Well you're always mayor, I guess, uh, if you're listening Danny,
(31:46):
that I'm responsible in your restaurant's responsible for the grocery
store in Clintdannon, who knew mayor Kerrie. Always pleasure to
have you both. Good luck on Saturday. All right, we'll
take a break when we talk to author Danny Boyd.
We come back on the Voice of Charleston CCHS.

How you doing, man, I'm good, buddy. Go commanders, look
at this. I mean, all right, So I started the show.
I start to show Jared Page, you know, the vice
mayor of the Saint Albans, big Philadelphia fan. He comes
in wearing the Philadelphia shirt. It's okay. And then you
and I talked earlier this week about you coming in today, Danny,
(34:56):
and you come in and you're wearing the Washington junk.
I mean, what is up with that?
Speaker 7 (35:01):
Buddy?
Speaker 4 (35:02):
Buddy?
Speaker 13 (35:02):
You remember I'm from Martinsburg. I remember Sonny Jergison, I
remember John Riggins.
Speaker 7 (35:07):
I grew up with that.
Speaker 4 (35:08):
All right. Well, I know our good friend Tony the
Taylor is listening right now because he sent me a
text that said, you know, go Washington or some garbage
like that. I don't know. So you're not the only
Washington fan. So just so you know, Parentzino is too. Well,
I'll tell Tony I need a shirt because I'm finally
working again after two years. All right, Tony, Danny, Danny, Tony,
(35:31):
we hook up.
Speaker 7 (35:32):
All right?
Speaker 4 (35:32):
So what have you been up to the last you
haven't been on in a while. What have you been
up to?
Speaker 13 (35:36):
Well, I've been kind of out of pocket, you know.
I haven't had anything new in a couple of years.
I mean, I wrote this book God's Pool two years ago,
you know, and now through all the process of getting
a publisher and all of that. So most of the
human communication I've had with with my garden club kids
on the West Side, and that's usually just to come
(35:57):
in to take popsicles out of my freezer. But it's
nice to be out, you know, and working again.
Speaker 7 (36:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (36:03):
All right, So for those that don't know you, and
I find that very hard to believe. Everybody in the
Canaw Valley and beyond knows knows.
Speaker 13 (36:10):
Danny Boyd give us a little bio in you, well,
retired professor from West Virginia State. Oddly enough, I'm drinking
out of my West Virginia State mug courtesy and President
Eric cage Man. Wonderful gig thirty three years there, made
thirty some films and videos, three musicals. Actually, Larry Gross
(36:36):
and I are doing the cast album now for Mister
Turtle's Garden Club. It'll be out and be recorded in January.
And graphic novels and books.
Speaker 4 (36:47):
I think this is my eleventh book, Okay, and that's
what we're here to talk about, birl. So here to
talk about some of your appearances that you get one.
So tell us about this new book though.
Speaker 13 (36:56):
Well, it's a fantasy in the style of magical realism
and magical really. I mean it was inspired by one
hundred Years of Solitude, Marquees's wonderful classic in nineteen sixty
seven in South America. It's but instead of one hundred years,
it's it's a week a week in this fictitious village
(37:20):
of rural West Virginia, notis which is Sutton backwards. So
buddy again, know most of my work has been inspired
by Mingo and Logan County, our home places. But now
we've moved to Braxton County, moving on up. Yeah, so
it's at Airdice Park if you know my movie, and
it's on Amazon Prime, but you know it's it's a
(37:42):
very collective, eccentric, down trodden village where the main characters
are of course heroes. By the end, it's a love
story and love story. One's a ghost story and one's
a fictitious with a mad scientist has built has just
built a super collider beneath the village, in the in
(38:04):
the circle, beneath the played out coal mines.
Speaker 4 (38:07):
Okay, this mouthful, buddy, Where did this idea come from?
Speaker 13 (38:12):
This came from my my my daughter, I think when
she was eight years old, Danielle who I won't say
how old she is now, but she's eight years old.
We're by our community pool there in spring Hill and
we're back in our lounge chairs and she looks up
at the sky and she said, look, God's pool. So
(38:34):
over the years it was gonna it was gonna be
a movie.
Speaker 4 (38:36):
Yeah, and you just kept that in your mind.
Speaker 13 (38:38):
That kept it in my mind all that time. And
then I decided, uh that you know, I wrote the
treatment for for a movie around two thousand and one. Uh,
David Selby was going to play the main character of
Pedler and uh, you know, it just didn't work out
like as a as the movies do. So uh you know,
(39:00):
so I added the particle park because there's there's quantum physics.
Not that I'm a math genius. I mean actually failed
junior high algebra.
Speaker 4 (39:12):
Ut you want to know something, So did I?
Speaker 7 (39:15):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (39:15):
Man, I had to go to summer school.
Speaker 9 (39:16):
It was so hard.
Speaker 8 (39:17):
I had to repeat it.
Speaker 13 (39:19):
I can't believe they moved me in. I had to
repeat it in the tenth grade.
Speaker 4 (39:23):
Ninth grade algebra almost did me in. But I but
I went to summer school. And back in those days,
you had to pay to go, and the thing was
pay your fee, get your b That's what they told.
So what year did you go to swivit? Because you
know that was my first gig. I was at Southern
West Virginia Community and Technical College. Eighty eight would have
been my first year there.
Speaker 11 (39:42):
I was.
Speaker 4 (39:43):
I graduated high school in June and then starting classes
there in August. I was at Southern for two years
and transferred to Marshall. Yeah, I left in eighty one
and eighty two.
Speaker 13 (39:50):
Yeah, I was, But I saw you at the Big
Wrestling Show and we met there there at the Fieldhouse.
Speaker 4 (39:55):
That's that's another one of your passions. And this is wrestling.
And of course I spent thirty years in the business
myself and you and I have worked with you. You
and I crossed paths a couple of times. One one night,
I didn't think we were gonna get out of Boone
County alive. Crazy uh, And I will save that for
another time. But there was one particular night that I
was wondering if should I keep up this friendship with
(40:17):
Danny Boyd because I thought I was gonna get killed
that night in Boone County. But it was all in fun.
Sometimes people take I mean, look, the thing about wrestling
is sometimes people take it a little too seriously. And
that's what this had to do with you or portraying
a character and a couple of good old boys there
and we're with net Miners. Yeah, it was where were
we like Jeffrey or Nellis or something like that. County
(40:41):
it was.
Speaker 13 (40:41):
It was it was one of those booney places.
Speaker 4 (40:44):
Yeah, and they didn't quite get that this is all
for fun. And you said disparaging things about coal miners
and and you know, and I and I was playing
the announcer.
Speaker 13 (40:53):
And it was guys.
Speaker 4 (40:55):
I was playing a heel, so he was playing a part. Uh,
it's still real to me, you know, as the saying
goes in that famous internet clip, It's still real to me.
All right, where can people get this book?
Speaker 13 (41:05):
Okay, it's launched this Friday, six to seven point thirty
at South Charleston Library, but it's hosted by my favorite bookstore,
Plot Twist, So I you know, one thing what I
demanded was that we opened the book there. And Dave,
this is a crazy weekend suddenly, Saturday and Sunday. I'm
(41:29):
a guest of a hero con in Tay's Valley.
Speaker 4 (41:34):
In my neighborhood.
Speaker 13 (41:34):
Now yeah, yeah, near you.
Speaker 4 (41:36):
I had to ask you how to get there. But
it's the Valley Park, right, Valley Park, Yeah, Valley Park.
Speaker 13 (41:42):
There's there's like a building there.
Speaker 4 (41:44):
It's the Conference Center, Valley Park Conference Center.
Speaker 7 (41:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (41:47):
So it's it's there.
Speaker 13 (41:50):
This good friend of ours, Nick, who organizes everything that's
nerd with in our world. So it's Saturday and Sunday,
I think ten two evening.
Speaker 4 (42:03):
Okay, all right, and that's that's right in Valley party
and you'll be there. We have copies of the book
there with you.
Speaker 13 (42:08):

Speaker 4 (42:37):

the town Center at any level, Tex says Dave. On
top of Danny Boyd's many other feats, during his tenure
as a professor at State, he was a mentor and
inspiration for many aspiring yellow Jackets in the creative arts.
Speaker 7 (47:28):
Danny is.
Speaker 4 (47:30):
Danny Boyd's want of a kind. And I've known him
for a number of years, and he and I could
sit here and talk about places we've been stuff. He's
a great guy, and no quit at him. He says
he's going to turn sixty nine here in a couple
of weeks and he's going to retire. I will believe
that when I see it, all right, But he does
have a new book out, so you know, I wish him,
wish him the best of luck with that. Going up
(47:52):
on tomorrow's show, Chris Lawrence and Tom Bragg will be
here to preview high school football coverage on WCCHS and
also on ninety six to one KWS. Angie Gillenwater will
be here with this week's Adopt Me Please Pet of
the Week and Boomtown Days are coming to Nitro on Saturday.
Joe Stevens from the City of Nitro will be here
to talk about that. Side note, look for our stations
in the parade there Saturday morning. I will be driving
(48:13):
the WCCHS vehicle. Also tomorrow, we're gearing up for Ribfest
next week in Amrmette and as a part of Ribfest,
there's a chicken wing eating contest and there is a
women's division. Casey Foster, who fancies herself as the Queen
of eating contest here in the Kenawal Valley. He's going
to join me on the show to talk about it tomorrow.
That's on the local show later today Metro News, Midday
(48:34):
thirteen News and Tonight Live anchor Amanda Baron and me.
You know, my tag team partner, Amanda Baron is all
jacked up about our alma mater, Ohio University taking on
the Mountaineers on Saturday. In Athens today, the color commentator
for OU, Rob Cornelius, will join us. Now he's not
only a witty political pundit, he's also a sportscaster color
(48:55):
commentator for the Bobcats. We'll talk to him. Also, we
told you a couple of weeks ago about an event
that was here in Charleston at the Woman's Club. It
was organized by a group of Democrats. I think the
Canaal Women's Democratic Group may have been involved with it
as well. Anyway, it was a town hall of sorts
and we had a couple of folks who helped put
that together on the local show a couple of weeks ago,
(49:16):
Bob Pepper and Patty Hamilton. They're going to come on
the show a sanmaertnoon to talk about how it went.
And they look, I'll say this, they had a great crowd,
great crowd for the event. So we're going to talk
to those organizers about that. Also, there's a pie Board
meeting today. Brad McIlhenny is covering that and if his
schedule allows, he's going to join us during the two
o'clock hour. Don't know whether he will be, whether it
(49:39):
be done or not. If he is, he'll join us
during the two o'clock hour for an update, and also
the latest edition of The West Virginia Pole is due
to be released. Normally hits the website about ten o'clock
or so. So one of the things that they're covering
on today's edition is how West Virginia feels about social media.
So we will talk about that with Brad again if
his schedule allow. And of course Open Line West Virginia
(50:02):
is coming up as well. Metro News Midday with thirteen
News and Tonight Live anchor Amanda Baron and me Dave
Island powered by Selangio Law. We'll see at noon today.
Tex says no one even mentioned Trump anytime during the show.
Why you Trump lovers got a wedge? Trump in any
time is deranged. It's Trump derangement syndrome. Sounds the tanks.
(50:24):
But the Dave Island Show on five eighty Live is
brought to you in part by Morgan and Morgan with
more than twenty billion dollars recovered. They believe that when
you're injured, you deserve more. Morgaanid Morgan, America's largest injury
law firm. In another text here text says what st
Albans is doing definitely promotes alcohol use. It's sad to
(50:45):
see society moving in this direction. Side effects will be
felt in the future, but who cares about the future. Apparently, Well,
when they do these PODA things, public outdoor designated areas,
not public outdoor drinking areas as many people think it's
designated areas. It's an economic boon for the for the businesses.
There have been in the city of Charleston, zero issues,
(51:08):
none whatsoever. They modeled this after Ohio that's had huge
success with it. So you know, until there's issues, I say,
go for it, and responsible people will do responsible things.
If you're not responsible, then maybe the maybe the event's
not for you, all right, TJ. Meadows always responsible. It's
what this man.
Speaker 15 (51:27):
If someone's going to drink too much, if they're going
to get into a fight or do something as a
result of it, they'll do it indoors.
Speaker 7 (51:34):
Today.
Speaker 4 (51:34):
I mean, what's the difference. I mean, what's different? It
would be different if it was like these events and
these the communities if there were issues, but there have
been none, zero whatsoever, zero zilch. Not out because they
because it's heavily policed, and because they do it right
and look if if people don't want to have it,
if they want to drink a diet coke or water
and nothing, that's fine too. And it's not like everybody
(51:55):
that shows up is falling down drunk. Matter of fact,
you know nobody is. We got a bigger fish to fry,
indeed fish. Danny's a barbecue stand who doesn't serve fish,
but serves some killer barbecue. Opening up at eleven o'clock
this morning, going over, I don't know, probably be tomorrow.
I don't think I think I'm wanna make it over today.
But go see Danny, our good friend. What do you
got on the show?
Speaker 7 (52:15):
Real quick?
Speaker 15 (52:16):
So coming up ten oh six, we will talk about
the West Virginia poll. At eleven to thirty three, we'll
talk to a Mingo Keunty commissioner about those data center
projects that are being battered around, try to understand what
the community's concerns are. Eleven oh six, we'll talk vaccines.
They are good, they're not bad. We'll talk to medical
experts about why that is.
