Andrew Metz from Invent is here. Now, this is the
facility that's been operating actually since the nineteen seventies in
Eleanor Putnam County. Yesterday a big announcement over there. Talked
about a little bit on Metro News midday yesterday that
(01:58):
they are expanding, looking at hire about one hundred and
so workers over there. And Andrew mets is with the company.
He's going to join us and to talk about that
the expansion and the job there that they're going to
be having tomorrow. Again, they're looking to hire about one
hundred people out there in addition to what they already have,
So we're going to talk to Andrew Metz about that,
coming up a little bit later on. Also, State Democratic
Party and chair and Delegate Mike Pushkin will be stopping

Goodwill planning their big night in Monte Carlo event, big
time fundraiser Alex Mahaffy and Jaman Schmidt here to talk
about it. Welcome to the show. Hey, hey, folks, Yeah,
thank you for having us, Thanks for being here. So
what's I don't know how many years has been going on,
I mean approximately, because is this happen?
Speaker 6 (02:59):
Yeah, this is a third air.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
I was thinking I would have guessed and I would
have gotten it right, third annual event. Look at you,
look at me knowing stuff. So for people that have
never been there, and we'll get in all the ticketing
and how it works whatever, just give us an overview
of the event.
Speaker 6 (03:12):
Yeah, it's really fun. We've got food, drinks, We've got
DJ Woody Woods. He's going to be operating our dance floor.
We've got a silent auction. And one of the cool
things about this event is some of the offerings that
we have. We have raffle gaming that's like casino style.
We also have some fun games that are for the
girlies who may not like gambling games. And then we
(03:35):
also have a VIP area that has a cigar and
bourbon lounge, which I know some of the men will
be attracted to. And we've also got DJ EJ out there.
And all proceeds from this event actually benefit our transportation programs.
And I know a lot of people think goodwill it's.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Just our retail store stores, just the stores. Yeah, yeah,
there's a whole lot more than that.
Speaker 6 (03:57):
And Jamon does a lot of our pork pr work
and so he gets that all the time. But goodwill
is so much more in our programs do so much
for the community, and so proceeds from this event directly
go to benefit our transportation initiatives.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
And talk about the I guess we should tell people
where and when it is first, Let's get to that,
and then I want to talk about the transportation, but
give us the location.
Speaker 6 (04:18):
Absolutely, it's going to be on Thursday, October ninth at
Berry Hills Country Club, and we've got some ticket giveaways
going on this week and all that information can be
found on our socials. But we'll get back to that
in a little bit. Jaman, do you want to talk
a little bit about our transportation initiatives.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
Yeah, of course.
Speaker 7 (04:32):
So there's two programs that we have that we address
transportation issues in the state. One is our Mission Mobile program.
The other ones are Weals to Work program. The Mission
Mobile is basically a bus where we offer our services
out of Typically people when they get services from us,
they come to one of our centers, our career centers,
but this bus travels throughout our twenty county footprint, offering
services to people at their local library or sometimes local
(04:54):
gas station, depending on where people.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Actually flow to in that community.
Speaker 7 (04:58):
So that's one we also work is a program that
we built up about two years ago. I mean it's
designed basically to get people into a vehicle. A lots
of people have a hard time doing that themselves. We
can help match down payment and also do a lot
of different things to help them getting the vehicle basically.
But anyways, yeah, those are two programs we have.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
And again it's so much more that this should be
your new slogan, so much more than just stores.
Speaker 8 (05:19):
I like that.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Yeah, feel feel free to use that.
Speaker 6 (05:21):
We like your marketing mind.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
Yeah, go ahead and stable.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
It's fun.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
There's nothing new under the sun. You feel free to
feel free to rip it off. But again, I think
it's these programs that you talk about about going out
in the communities. And again we think of goodwill because
we're here in the canav Valley of just being here.
But I mean talk about the footprint, as you mentioned,
of the entire program of where you guys are the
summit rights, goodwill of the summit.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
That is true. R.
Speaker 7 (05:46):
Yeah, So I always kind of tell people it's mainly
the central southern part of the state.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
So help me out, Alex.
Speaker 7 (05:52):
Here, it's as slow as Bluefield High up as Braxton
far over as Greenbrier to like Parkersburg area.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Okay, that's a kind of our territory.
Speaker 6 (06:01):
To Wyoming County. Essentially, it's kind of the coverage area.
So we have twenty counties and you know, we recognize
the geography of a lot of those counties is very
rule and so transportation has been a huge barrier for
many people in terms of getting to and from just
essential needs and work. And so we really want to
step in and fill those gaps. And that's something Goodwill is,
(06:25):
you know, we're known for, and we want to continue
to educate the community that we're not just those retail stores,
that we are actually providing these services to the communities
that we serve.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Talking again to a Jamonishment and Alex Mahaffe from Goodwill,
The Goodwill of the Summer, The Dave Allen Show and
five D Line, Brown Too and part by Morgan and Morgan,
America's largest injury law firm. If You're injured, visit for
the People dot com and guys, these things you talk
about in traveling in this big footprint from Wyoming County
up to Parkersburg is not possible without money and without
(06:55):
the donations. And the stores are great, but they could
they only do so much. This is you need events
like this and it's a great way for people to
help out.
Speaker 6 (07:02):
Yeah, and we just want people to come, have a
good time, enjoy the evening, learn a little bit about
the mission of Goodwill and what we do, and you know,
follow us on Facebook. We're constantly posting content about some
of the different initiatives that we have. You know, get
on our website, take a look at it. If you
have any questions, Jaman and I are always open. You
(07:23):
can find our email online on the website. Also on
our socials, feel free ask, ask away and and learn
about what we're doing.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
And let's get back to this night because this is
one of the premiere eventss you know, four or five
six events in the Canal Valley that you got to
be at, and this is one of those events exactly.
Speaker 7 (07:42):
I mean the years past that we've seen from people
out being on the patio smoking cigars and join their bourbon,
to people at dance floor band. I mean, it's awesome,
it's always cool deal.
Speaker 8 (07:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (07:53):
Yeah, and you know we've got some ticket giveaways tonight
at Working Women's Wednesday Dinner, drinks and dancing tomorrow. You
can also catch us on the Woody Wood Show tonight.
But we just really appreciate you guys, you know, helping
us promote the event, and we just want everybody to
come and have a good time.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
It's it's always a great it's a great, great time. Now,
are you still in need of sponsors or is it
a little too late for that?
Speaker 6 (08:15):
Oh no, we're always in need of sponsors.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
Well, I just didn't know because sometimes with sponsors, you know,
there's planting and things like that, So I didn't know
you know, how far along you were on that.
Speaker 6 (08:22):
Yeah, absolutely, And you can find all this information on
our website, Goodwill Summit dot com. You can also follow
us on Facebook and follow the event A Night in
Monte Carlo, Golden Hour in Monaco. We're very happy about
the theme. There's a look book on there to get
your outfit inspo and all kinds of cool information. And
so again, if you have any questions, you can just
(08:43):
reach out to us directly.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
So I know that you know, anybody is welcome. It
as long as they buy the ticket. But talk about
the talk about the I don't want to call it costuming,
but but talk about the apparel and the attire because
this this can be very fun.
Speaker 6 (08:56):
Oh yeah, yeah, And I'm gonna let him on take
this one. He's had a lot of fun this.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
I was gonna say, why do I get the idea,
jamm this is this is on you that.
Speaker 7 (09:03):
You people look at me and they're like, man, this
guy dress is nice. Uh No, But we had the
princes the pintress board that we were working on and
definitely recommend going out there take a look at it.
But yeah, you're talking about just looking dapper for that night.
And when I say dapper for the guys, nice little
suit jacket, maybe you want to throw on a little
(09:25):
two button down there, maybe not wear the time, maybe
wear a little pocket square that'd be cool. And then
of course check out the pintress board and check out.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
The actual looks or colors.
Speaker 7 (09:35):
But then for the women's side, I'll let you take
over that little bit.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (09:39):
For the women, we recommend any kind of sunset colors.
You know, have fun with your attire. Typically we say
cocktail or a little bit more but you know, we
want people to have fun with it. Come out, look sharp,
have a good time. Uh and you know, absolutely take
a take a look at the pintress board. You know,
(10:00):
it kind of gives the vibe of the event as
well as what to wear, and you know, go from there.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
It's going to be a great night. Again, give us
all the details, the date, the time, pit tickets, wrap.
Speaker 8 (10:11):
It up for us.
Speaker 4 (10:11):
You here again, Yeah, October ninth.
Speaker 7 (10:13):
If you need tickets, website or Facebook, follow us on
our event page and then yeah, that's it, see you
on October ninth and Barry Hills is.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
This and if you want to get to like I said,
you mentioned working Women's Wednesday that our sister station V
one hundred does over at the Red Carpet, And I
think they're going to ben giving away tickets over there tonight,
so stop mind and seeing them over there.
Speaker 6 (10:32):
Absolutely, and those tickets are going to be VIP tickets
and so that's big time.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
So definitely what is the vipe?
Speaker 6 (10:39):
Oh absolutely, so general admission. You have access to the
full event. VIP actually get access to the cigar and
Bourbon lounge as well as additional entertainment. There'll be food
and drinks for both general admission and VIP, but VIP
just gets you that little extra and capability to go
out on the patio and be in the element of money.
Speaker 3 (11:00):

Visit Generations Forward dot com. We have a story post
at the website wv Metronews dot com. Invent Electric it's
a decade's old company in Eleanor, Putnam County, announcing yesterday
that they are expanding and they need workers. Andrew Matts
is the facility controller for the facility that's for this
facility in Eleanor, and they're hosting a job fair there
to tomorrow. Andrew joins us to talk about it. Welcome
(15:02):
to the show, sir, Thank you.
Speaker 13 (15:05):
We're glad to be on.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
And of course we had you on the Metro News
midday show yesterday talking about the expansion. So for those
who maybe didn't hear the interviewer, haven't read the story
on the website yet, give us the overview about this
expansion of your facility in Eleanor.
Speaker 8 (15:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (15:21):
So, we've been working in the data center industry for
the past five years and as we've seen in the
news everywhere, it is dramatically expanding in our demand as
such has expanded with it, and so we're expanding our
facility here by one hundred and seventeen thousand square feet,
most of it concrete, as well as a warehouse that'll
(15:42):
put pretty much our entire campus under concrete for parking, building, storage, everything.
And with that, we're looking to hire at least one
hundred employees for our upcoming demand for the rest of
twenty twenty five and twenty twenty six.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
And explain to the people that may not be familiar
with it. Again, you've you've been in business there since
the seventies, but kind of just give us you over
explain exactly what it is you do out there.
Speaker 13 (16:06):
Yeah, so we build industrial metal buildings for industry. So
if you ever go by a substation where you see
all the transformers, you'll see a metal building there. That
metal building will carry very important equipment to run that substation.
In the past five years, we've expanded to where now
(16:27):
we're working in the data center industry, and what our
building is is it is a system to help make
sure that there is an uninterrupted power supply to a
data center. So if the power goes starts to go
out one of these data centers, there'll be a battery
within our system that will kick on to make sure
that the power doesn't go off, and then within fifteen
twenty minutes, if the power isn't back on, our system
(16:48):
will automatically transfer to a generator system so that that
data center, no matter what, has a power supply.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
And how many people do you currently employee there?
Speaker 13 (16:58):
One hundred and fifty employees, Okay.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
Got one hundred five now, but you're looking to hire
at least one hundred more. Right, that's what you said, right.
Speaker 13 (17:04):
That's right. Once we're done, we're hoping we have at
least two hundred and fifty for the demand that we
have right now, not not counting any future demand.
Speaker 3 (17:13):
Yeah, and let's talk about that demand because I mean, obviously,
you know, the company's been in business, as we said,
since the nineteen seventies, but there's obviously a greater demand
or you wouldn't be doing this.
Speaker 13 (17:23):
Oh. Absolutely, we still we talk about the data centers now,
but we've been really doing this work for five to
five to six years within the data center world, and
every year it's more work than what we've had before.
And we're to the point where, you know, we're changing
our processes to almost become like a manufacturing facility for buildings.
(17:44):
So we're trying to actually have you know, a gigantic
assembly line. We're each building and go through stages to
get them out faster from here.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
Yeah, I love it. I love it again. We're talking
with Andrew Mettz from Invent about the expansion of this
facility in Eland or Putnam County to day aland show
in five eighty Live is broad to you part my
husband's pizza. This month, get a large at Niche Pepperoni
pizza and an order of fifty cinnamon bytes. We're only
twenty ninety nine. Find your closest Hustands for a delivery,
pickup or dining at Huston'sizza dot com. Right, so you
(18:13):
have a job fare that's going to be tomorrow. What
are you looking for in potential employees there?
Speaker 13 (18:21):
So, the three biggest areas that we need is we
need builders who are or people who actually build the
buildings that we're going to be having here coming up.
We need electricians because these have a pretty highly configured gear.
We also have you know why are when we do
for the HVC systems that go into these. And then
we're looking for a large group of welders as well.
(18:41):
Some of the buildings that we do have underlying welding
structures that have to be going to place. We also
have probably at least five or ten office positions of
varying types that we're looking for as well. All right,
in that jobfare that we're having to Sorry.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
No, no, that's okay. I'm just going to ask you
about the office positions because anytime you hear a company
like this, you automatically think, well, it's it's it's it's
the hardcore labor here, you know, it's that's that kind
of stuff, and it is. There's a lot of that.
But I wasn't aware that you also had office positions.
So let's talk about what you're looking for as far
as office positions go.
Speaker 13 (19:11):
Yeah, so we're looking for some lean manufacturing expertise. We're
also looking for a project manager. We're looking for, you know,
a a scheduler. Various things are supportive to support all
of the various work that we're going to be doing
next year. And we actually already have a large office
group as well. This is to support the additional demand
(19:31):
coming up.
Speaker 3 (19:32):
I love it. And talk about your relationship in Putnam County.
I mean you've been there, as we said, for quite
some time. What is it about Putnam County Because you
could probably take this operation anywhere, but you've you've remaining
in Putnam County. Talk about your relationship with the with
the officials and the public in Eleanor and in Putnam County.
Speaker 13 (19:51):
We have always had a great supportive community here in Eleanor,
West Virginia, and also across the river in Winfield. The
Putnam County commit has been great to us as well
as Eleanor. And really the thing that makes us always
want to stay here is the people. We have an
amazing community of employees. You know, they come from, you know,
(20:11):
all around the local area and it just makes it
a great place to work.
Speaker 3 (20:16):
And again, you wouldn't have been in business as long
as what you have been if it weren't for that
great relationship. Because, as you know, any company is only
as good as the community and the workers that support it.
So let's talk about the job fare. It is going
to be there at your facility. Give us the address
of the facility in Eleanor.
Speaker 13 (20:34):
Yes, it is three two eight Industrial Park Drive, Eleanor Or,
West Virginia, and we will be having for qualified individuals.
We have the capability to offer on site tomorrow during
the job fair on site.
Speaker 8 (20:46):
I love it. I love it.
Speaker 3 (20:47):
So if people are interested in any of these jobs,
they bring a Resumey is there like a skills test
on any of these jobs? What are you looking for there?
Speaker 13 (20:56):
So obviously if we're looking through electricians and welters, there
maybe some you know, testing to to ensure we have
good expertise, but you know, bring a resume and also,
you know, outside of the job fare, I think it's
important that if you can't make the job fair, you
can always go to invent dot com, n v e
NT dot com, slash careers and then search for the
eleanor facility and all of these positions are also available
(21:18):
there as well. You just go online for all an
application and we will give you a call.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
Well, congratulations on the expansion of the of the uh
the operation out there, because I can tell you you
know somebody who lives in Putnam County and know the
great things that you all do there, not only just there,
but the things that your employees in your company does
in the in the community as well. And thank you
for your investment uh in in Putnam County because I mean,
obviously you're not just going to employ people in Putnham County.
(21:42):
You got them driving from all over for these jobs.
Speaker 13 (21:45):
Yeah, that's right. We have people all the way from
point Pleasant that work here already.
Speaker 3 (21:49):
That's that's good stuff. And now we're looking to hire
one hundred or so more. Can you give us I
know you said you'll be offering jobs on demand, but
can you give us any idea of what some of
the pay for these jobs would be. I mean, I
know it's a very very ballpark figure. We're not going
to hold you to it, but i'm imagining, because you're
talking about skilled labor here, I'm imagining you're going to
have a pretty pretty decent rate of pay.
Speaker 13 (22:12):
Yeah, and Midtedly, I'm not HR, so I can't talk
m Yeah. Yeah, they are competitive, competitive wages, and they
do absolutely range depending on the expresses you come in at.
So if you're more at the beginner level, it'll be
more of an entry pay. You know, if you're coming
in with you know, several years experience or skill set,

announcements like this, because this is a company that admittedly

I'm just saying that they could have this operation anywhere,

I know, I know living in that area that what
they give back to the community and very involved in

Pete trying to look so tough and cool but looked
like lame os. It's a text.
Speaker 13 (24:23):
You know.
Speaker 3 (24:23):
It's interesting because we had a retired Army colonel regular
to the show, Colonel Dunn Berner, as we called it,
was on the show yesterday and look he applauded because
we actually played some of the audio from Hegseth's speech
yesterday and Berner was one He absolutely just he thought
everything was great. And I think it all depends on
(24:44):
your perspective. I was talking to a good friend of
mine last night who is retired military, and I just
asked him point blank, I said, so what did you
think of it? And he's not, like I said, he's retired. Now,
I just asked him, I so, what did you think
of it? He said, I thought it was great. I
think all of these changes that they're making it in
the military are great. I'm I'm for one hundred percent.

And somebody is out there listening, going, what's a paper carrier?
Speaker 8 (29:55):
What's a paper?
Speaker 3 (29:56):
I got one over here that tells you anything. The
late Doug Scaff told me he would come in on
the show and I always have a copy of the
Gazet Mail, you know, in studio with me, and usually
the Wall Street Journal as well. Scaff would come in
and he would looked at and he would smile and
he'd say, I got you, at least you, And I said, well,
I live in a neighborhood of older people. You got.
(30:18):
You got some pretty good, you know, pretty good circulation
here where I live. So all right, so let me
start off with this. This Sunday, the Jets and the
Cowboys play. Okay, now, somebody has got to win this game,
but I mean maybe not. The Cowboys tied the other night.
Speaker 18 (30:35):
They tie the other night against a very good Green
Bay Packer team, so I'd say that was promising for
the Cowboys. I can't say much about the New York
Jets right now. We looked to be I mean, we
had like I think like twelve penalties and three turnovers
the other night against you know, the team that I
probably despised the most in this world, of Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 8 (30:58):
It was it was hard to take. Ye.
Speaker 18 (31:00):
All the Dolphins fans out there, I'm sure you have
let me have it, and that's uh, that's your you know,
good for you, it's your right to do so. We
are currently my New York Jets are currently the worst
team in the NFL. You think so, well, I guess
some Tennessee Titans might. Yeah, it's between us and the Titans.
Who's on the clock for that first pick. I believe
(31:20):
next spring they're already.
Speaker 3 (31:21):
Playing the sad party.
Speaker 18 (31:23):
So it's even if we get the first pick. We
historically are not really good at picking.
Speaker 3 (31:27):
So that sounds like the Cowboys. Yeah, and that gave
the other night. I mean, there should never be a tie,
and I mean do something flip a coin, you know,
slap fight, competitive dance, do something, you know, there should
be There should never be a tie. First time in
my lifetime and I'm fifty five years old that the
Cowboys have had a tie game. Nineteen sixty nine was
a lot.
Speaker 18 (31:46):
They could have come to the middle of the field
and done rock scissors papers, of course, something which often
ends in a tie.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Also. All right, all right, so let me start. We
got a lot of things I want to talk to
you government shut down, but I want to talk about
the dinner that you got to.
Speaker 18 (31:59):
Okay, yes week hit hit that that is this Saturday.
It's coming up very soon. There are there are tickets
still available at wv democrats dot com. Slash r K.

Opened at six. Let's see, we.
Speaker 18 (32:34):
Have the Mayor Monroe Nichols, the newly elected mayor from Tulsa, Oklahoma,
is one of our keynote speakers. We have two keynote
speakers this year, and also a newly elected Congressman from
the Northern Virginia, James Walkinshaw, who just recently won in
a special election, so not not one, but two great
(32:58):
speakers for that event, and of course with other elected
officials and the mayor Charleston will be joining us this year.
Uh so yeah, it should be a great event and
also music provided by the great Bob Thompson. So again,
tickets are going fast, but they are still available WV
democrats dot com slash r k.
Speaker 3 (33:18):
So you're not doing any music there. I know you're
your official role of State Democratic Party Chair and I
have joined mister Thompson for something.
Speaker 19 (33:24):
Uh.
Speaker 18 (33:24):
You know, the first year that I was chair, I
did sit in with the musical guests that we had,
of course, but the musical guest that year, one of
our musical guests that year was was my friend Sierra Ferrell,
who's killing it right now by the way, more time
Grammy winner. So I got to sit in with her
at the first figure. Yeah, I should probably just quit. Well, yeah,
(33:46):
you're you're right about that, all right.
Speaker 3 (33:47):
So we'll hit that a little bit later on so
we can give you a chance to sell some tickets
to that. But I want to talk about last night,
uh and the Ctate Democratic Party Chair and some of
you folks are State Democratic party, I should he's been
doing these kitchen table answer.
Speaker 18 (34:00):
That's actually I mean to be clear, that's put on
by the House Democrats fault, which you know, we're all
you know, we're all worked together, and which I'm in both.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
But you've had a.
Speaker 3 (34:09):
Series of that. And the last night Year Old into Morto.
Speaker 18 (34:11):
Number three was last night and that was at the
actually it was near Morgantown. It wasn't in Morgantown technically,
it was at the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department. And they
keep growing. Last night was over one hundred and fifty people.
And what was different about last night I think it
was because we were in we were near the university.
We had a lot of university students there and that's
who asked most of the questions.
Speaker 3 (34:32):
And what are some of the questions that they asked
when they came.
Speaker 18 (34:34):
Well, mainly they're concerned about a future for young people
in West Virginia. You know, unfortunately, are our greatest I
said this for years, Our greatest export in West Virginia
are our young people. We we have you know, people
are when they get educated and then then they take off.
And that's what we want people to see the world.
I encourage people to get out there and everything, but
we need people moving here, and we need our university
(34:56):
students staying here, or the state has absolutely no. So
they were concerned about a lot of the actions from
the legislature over the past several years that make this
state less attractive.
Speaker 8 (35:06):
To young people.
Speaker 18 (35:07):
You know, if we want a future in this state,
everything that we do over there at the Bad Idea Factory,
that's what I call the state capital, everything that we
do over there should be run through the prism of
will this bring young people to this state? Will this
make this state more attractive for young people to stay?
And unfortunately, over the past ten years, and especially over
the past several years now that the Republicans have had
(35:29):
two supermajorities in the legislature, they've been doing the exact
opposite of that. They've been passing legislation that makes kids
want to leave here.
Speaker 3 (35:38):
Give an example of some of those in your opinion.
Speaker 18 (35:41):
Well, I mean, one thing came up was the fact
that this state, I mean, a young woman got up
and said that she was reluctant to raise a family
here because of something went wrong with her pregnancy. The doctors,
you know, are threatened with criminal penalties if something goes
wrong because of our draconian laws in regards to women's
(36:04):
health caare in this state. And not just I mean,
I'm not even just talking about the Dobbs decision and
the overturning of ROW, where I feel like most West
Virginians would like to be able to speak out on it,
would like to have a vote on that, whether or
not we are able.
Speaker 8 (36:17):
To codify ROW.
Speaker 18 (36:18):
Like other Red states have done, They've put it to
the voters, and like President Trump has said, he supports
putting it to the voters. Unfortunately, the Republicans in this
state don't want to hear from the voters on this,
and we've the Democrats in the House have introduced a
resolution to put it on the ballot year after year
since you know, since twenty three, since the Dobbs decision,
(36:39):
and they've been you know, just refused to do that,
refuse to let the votership. But that's just one thing. Also,
as far as also in regards to women's health, we've
tried to pass, you know, laws over the past few
years about Duela's about you know that would help with childbirth,
about you know, studies on maternal health, you know, just
(37:01):
not just talking about Dobbs in row, but just as
far as women's health, women's health goes all together, and
then just you know, a lot of the focus over
the past several years on culture war issues that young
people really don't care about. It turns them off from politics.
And one thing that I stated last night, it's a
(37:21):
lot of these kids, this is all they know. You know,
over the past ten years, our politics in this country
have been dominated by this vitriolic rhetoric that really turns
people off, especially young people, and they don't remember anything
before that. And a lot of it stems from the
very top, when you have the chief executive you other,
president of the United States that spends more time attacking
(37:42):
people on Twitter than he does negotiating for his own budget.
Speaker 8 (37:47):
Yeah, there's a problem.
Speaker 3 (37:49):
And this was you said there's one hundred people there
were They came out last night over over over one
hundred people or one hundred and fifty at this event
just outside Morgantown. And I'm interested to know you said
there were a lot of young people there at the
University city. You completely understand that, but I would be
interested to know how many people that, if any that
probably were that. Weren't there, weren't Democrats were there, Republicans
(38:09):
were there, independent.
Speaker 18 (38:11):
Were independence and unaffiliated voters a lot of that's the
fastest growing voting block in the country, independence and unaffiliated voters,
and there were a lot, and there were Republicans there.
And at every event that we've had, we have had Republicans, independents,
unaffiliated voters, and Democrats.
Speaker 3 (38:26):
What's your message to independent voters, Well, it's it's we're
there or.
Speaker 18 (38:31):
On ail to listen more and it's a listening to
the main messages. Hey, we're here to listen. What do
you want us to do? We can be better legislators
if we get out in the community and listen to you.
And that's why I'm so glad that we're going into
many districts that don't have democratic representation. Where we were
last night, Yeah, we were in mon County, but we
were in a part that's that's currently represented by a
(38:53):
Republican in the House of Delegates. And we went into
his district and heard from folks in his district and
what we're hearing and that's why we're calling it a
kitchen table tour because what we're hearing about are more
about issues that you think about people talking about around
their kitchen table, things that affect their day to day lives.
A big issue is access to healthcare. A lot of people,
(39:14):
not just folks on Medicaid, but small business owners, independent contractors, entrepreneurs.
They're about to see their premium's skyrocket right now, and
they're about to see a tax increase because of this
continuing resolution that the Republicans seem so unwilling to compromise
on in Washington. So that's a big concern as a
(39:35):
people's the cost of healthcare in this country all around.
And of course, you know, our public employees, which we
have a whole lot of here in knag County and
a whole lot up in Mond County as well, where
we were last night, have seen three premium increases over
the past couple of years since the passage of Senate
Bill two sixty eight, which has led to these drastic
(39:56):
premium increases for our state workers, our teachers, our child
protective service workers, or our correctional officers, the people who
build our bridges and fix our roads their see and
not to mention, well, we'll mention our retirees who live
on fixed incomes. They're seeing rate increases, which in effect
is a pay cut. So yeah, those are kitchen table
(40:16):
issues that those are things that affect our day to
day lives and not these culture war issues that are
only meant to help people who are really, in my opinion,
not qualified for the job get re elected to a job.
Speaker 3 (40:28):
How is the candidate recruitment going, as the state Democrat.
Speaker 8 (40:31):
Very well, it's going very well.
Speaker 11 (40:34):
I can tell you.
Speaker 3 (40:34):
A lot of people on the Republican side have already
announced that they're running, which I think is kind of interesting.
You know that you've got so many Republicans that are
running against other Republicans, but that comes with being the
party in power.
Speaker 18 (40:46):
I believe with shaping up that we're going to have
some primaries as well, especially at the top of our ticket.
There's been a lot of interest, and of course the
filing period is in January. That's when we know for sure.
But right now, if you look at the Secretary State's website,
you will see more Democrats profile than you have in
the past several cycles. So we're ahead of the game
from where we were a couple of years ago, and
I think that's only going to increase because people are
(41:07):
fed up with the way things are.
Speaker 8 (41:09):
Going right now.
Speaker 18 (41:09):
I want to go back to a lot of people
who want to step up and be the change that
they want to see.
Speaker 3 (41:14):
I want to go back to the Kitchen Table events
just for a moment, because this one was held outside
of Morgantown last night. You got several more, and there
is come one coming to Charleston.
Speaker 18 (41:20):
Right October seventh at six pm over at the Charleston
Women's Club over on the East End.
Speaker 3 (41:25):

it's partial government shutdown. So we'll get into that here

I do I agree with that text. I think we
need to be honest about what's going on. Look, obviously,
the Republicans have the executive branch, they have the White House,
they have both. They have control of Congress, the House
and the Senate, and they have control of the judicial
branch as well. This shutdowns on them. You know, the
same people that are you know, crying foul about this
(46:53):
shutdown or the same people just you know, six months ago,
were in favor of the filibuster rule, which is supposed
to incur ridge compromise in the Senate. That's where things
are supposed to slow down. I'm starting to sound like
Senator Mansioneer. That's where things slow down, or in the Senate,
that's where you're supposed to reach compromise. And there was
a complete unwillingness on the part of President Trump and
(47:13):
the Republicans in Congress to compromise on this continuing Resolution.
And I'm tired of hearing this. Well, the Democrats voted
on a clean this isn't a clean bill. You're talking
about the Trump budget, which is going to severely impact
people across this country and especially here in West Virginia.
We have a whole lot of people, like sixty thousand
people in danger of losing their health care, many more
(47:35):
in danger of seeing premiums go up because these the
tax credits are no longer and when they don't extend this,
that's a tax increase. That continuing Resolution is a tax
increase on many of our small business owners, our entrepreneurs
are independent contractors. So yes, the Democrats in the Senate
need to use every tool with their disposal to fight
(47:55):
to do what they're supposed to do, do their job
and fight for their constituents who are in danger of
losing access to healthcare. Right now, that's what that Continuing
Resolution continues a really bad budget that was forced through
without any compromise at all.
Speaker 3 (48:11):
I mean when you turn on you know, the TV
or radio or whatever, and and you see people in
Washington just and you mentioned Senator Mansion, and of course
he's got a new book out, and we've had him
on the show and so on and so forth. Why
can't we just why can't we just get along? Why
can't we just work in Washington? I mean in West Virginia.
(48:33):
I mean, I know you've got your issues with the
with the Republicans obviously in the legislature whatever, but you
guys can work together on certain things. Why can't we
That's why they have that rule.
Speaker 18 (48:43):
Okay, And I've been you know, in the past when
you know, obviously I've had issues with it when we
were trying to get like past the John Lewis Voting
Rights Act. I thought that was something that they, the Republicans,
should have compromised on.
Speaker 8 (48:55):
They refused two years ago. But it's the same rule.
It's a filibuster rule.
Speaker 18 (48:58):
That's why they need sixty vote to pass this continuing Resolution,
and that should encourage compromise. But there's been a complete
unwillingness on the part of the Republicans to compromise on this.
Why would any Democrat vote for a huge tax cut
for billionaires at the expense of working people, raising people's
premiums to pay for and cutting people off of their
(49:22):
healthcare to offset a tax break for billionaires. Democrats are
not going to vote for that, nor should they vote
for that. But you have that sixty vote rule, which
means the Republicans need to sit down at the table
and figure out what they can get past. They've been
unwilling to do this. Look, the Democrats are still in Washington,
d C. The Republicans went home. You know, Congressman Riley
(49:42):
Moore is probably on Twitter somewhere and he's your friend. Yeah,
you know, dear friend.
Speaker 3 (49:47):
Well, you guys were friends at one point. He's told me.
Speaker 18 (49:49):
That until he went off the deep end, started taking
selfies in front of detentions, you know, out of detention
centers in l Salvador. Found that to be a little
off putting this say the least. But you know, the
Republicans left, the Democrats were there ready to work. Yeah,
somebody was talking about, uh, the fact that the president
was at the Ryder Cup this past weekend. Yeah, I mean,
(50:10):
you know, doing everything except as job okay, uh, you know,
talking in front and I you know what what concerns
me about the speech in front of the military leadership.
It wasn't so much as what Hexas said. It's what
the President said saying the enemy is within UH, saying
that this this uh, implying that we're going to use
the military against American citizens.
Speaker 8 (50:30):
That that should scare everybody.
Speaker 3 (50:32):
But what do you think when you see the Louisiana
folks who are asking for it?
Speaker 18 (50:36):
Well, that you know that the governor, the governor can
call in is own that the governor and the National
Guards or the state Uh. You know, that's the the
that's at the dispense of the disposal of the governor.
The governor can call them in. Generally they're used for
things like there's a big relief. There's a big difference,
not not as a as a police force, nor nor
should they.
Speaker 3 (50:54):
There's a big difference I think between because somebody pointed
out to me, but I think there's a big difference
between the governor uh asking for help and the President
saying we're coming in. I think there. I mean that's
and I have a problem with that as well.
Speaker 18 (51:06):
Yeah, you know, over the years, we've heard a lot
of talk about the First Amendment protecting our First Amendment rights,
and of course you know about the Second Amendment. Who
knew that in twenty twenty five the Third Amendment was
going to be a big issue.
Speaker 3 (51:19):
Tex says, you know, some people hoopton holler during the
hegset speech, but more people, more people were silent, and
that speaks volumes to the quality and the content of
the speech.
Speaker 18 (51:28):
I was more concerned about what the President said about
using our military against our own citizens, and we should
all be concerned about that.
Speaker 3 (51:35):
All right, before we let you go, give us the
info on the on the dinner this week.
