Our good friend Marjorie Cook from Advantage Valleys here. How

How are you I'm doing? Foine, Welcome to the new DIGS.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
You've not been in the nstio been in here since March,
and we kind of like it.

Speaker 5 (02:27):
We kind of like it looks fantastic. All right.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
So before we get in and you were here to
talk about something specific with the Dvantage Valley, we're going
to get to that here momentarily talk about your work
with Advantage Valley overall, then we'll get to this specific thing.

Speaker 5 (02:39):
Sure well.

Speaker 6 (02:40):
Advantage Valley. For those who may not know, we are
a regional economic development nonprofit and my role within the
organization is to be the marketer and communicator, so I
tell the story of what we are doing. But we
are in the business of business attraction to the region,
business retention, working with existing businesses, and also we have

(03:04):
a thriving entrepreneurship program. So some of my marketing is global,
some of my marketing is here local talking about local
food producers, which is what I'm going to talk about today.
And so generally we have a small staff and we
partner with so many organizations, but first and foremost the
local economic development authorities in a nine county region including Boone, Cabal, Clay, Jackson, Canal, Lincoln, Mason, Putnam,

(03:32):
and Wayne.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
I like that because sometimes we think about advantage Valley
and I have you know, Cheryl Ellison, have had you
folks on and other people with the organization, and when
you say the valley, everybody just thinks, Wow, it's it's
stuff in Charleston, which it is, and it's stuff in
Putnam County for example, which it is.

Speaker 5 (03:46):
But nine counties in this thing.

Speaker 6 (03:48):
Right, we stretch. We consider it the two metro regions
including Huntington and Charleston, the two largest you know, cities
in the state and the largest GDP and the largest population.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
So what's been keeping you We'll get to this, But
other than the taste of apple accha, which is what
we're going to get to here moment, you other what's
been keeping you busy here lately?

Speaker 6 (04:07):
Well, our entrepreneurship program is booming. We have multiple events upcoming.
So I'm promoting a couple business certification workshops, one upcoming
in Maine in Mason County and one in Putnam County.
And we this week, in fact, it's tonight, we have
a Claim Your Listing virtual event and Sasha Strader is

(04:31):
one of our business coaches and she will help folks
use a free marketing tool how to get out there
on Google, Yelp and Google Maps to make sure your
business is seen and heard and you've got accurate information.

Speaker 5 (04:43):
So log in tonight, yes, about how do people? How
do people log into this tonight?

Speaker 6 (04:49):
Tonight? You can hit our website and which is Advantage
Valley dot com and head to the Faster West Virginia
page and the details are there.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
All right, So you're here to talk what about Tastes
of Appalachia? You had me at taste so, uh so
what does this state talk about?

Speaker 6 (05:06):
It?

Speaker 2 (05:06):
It is?

Speaker 6 (05:07):
This is a new initiative. It's the first time we've
ever done this, and it is a program designed to
support growth and market expansion of local food producers this
holiday season. Breaking that down that means we have curated
carefully eight holiday gift boxes that are available for sale.

(05:29):
You can pick them up, you can have them shipped,
and they showcase some of the best of our Advantage
Valley region we do have. They're all West Virginia producers.
We have seventeen food vendors from nine different counties. Some
stretch a little bit outside of Advantage Valley, but we
have put together themed gift boxes for folks to give

(05:52):
this holiday. The key is Dave that the We only
have eight days left.

Speaker 5 (05:57):
Okay, okay, our orders are.

Speaker 6 (05:59):
Open and hill October seventeenth. But we have an incredible
lineup of featured vendors and we are working with the
partner with the Department of Agriculture. They're helping us pack
some of the boxes. But we are thrilled. You know
how at the holiday season there's always a push to

(06:19):
buy local. This is the option to buy local. But
we will help with your holiday gift giving. In fact,
I ordered mine or I were one of my five
this morning because I didn't feel like I could come
on the show if I hadn't put for sure put
my money where my mouth is. So I'd love to
share if you'd let me these vendors.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
Now, look, if I start chewing on this new microphone here,
then that's on you because you know this stuff's not
paid for yet, so a lot of you get all
droolie here because I'm looking at the flyer that you
brought in and everything from breakfast to snacks to cocktails,
sweet and salty.

Speaker 5 (06:54):
So yeah, let's go over there.

Speaker 6 (06:55):
Yes, yes, well we have of the eight boxes, we
have something called the West Virginia Favorites, and that includes
I'll just give some details here, JQ. Dickinson Salt. We
all love that Coal River Coffee, Dark Hollow Foods, Artisans sauce.
Apparently this has a cult following Tipsy ruse plastered peach,

(07:17):
barbecue sauce, fantastic sugar, Bottom farms with a raw wildflower
honey they're out of Clay County, and Legacy Foods, apple cider,
vinaigrette dressing, fantastic products.

Speaker 5 (07:30):
So that that's just one. But that's just the West
Virginia Favorite, just the West.

Speaker 6 (07:33):
Virginia Favorite box, and that costs fifty five dollars. Our
boxes range from twenty nine dollars up to fifty five.
And in addition to those vendors, we have let's see,
who did I not mention? Rock Family Farm from Lincoln County,
Heinerman Hill Farm, Ordinary, Evelyn's. You've probably heard of some
of these sassy gals, Blue Smoke Salsa, Jumpin' Johnny's, Dark

(07:58):
Hollow Foods. I mentioned them, Copperhead, Bloody Mary Mix, jar
Head Farms with a Peach cocktail, mocktail syrup, Harvest Trails, Freeze,
dried Oranges, Tasty Blend, and Deskin Candy out of Mason
Candy and Mason County County.

Speaker 5 (08:14):
Yeah, that's good stuff.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
And I'll tell you you know, this would be good
for so many different people. I'm thinking like a you know,
a business that wants to buy several of these to
give to their their customers, their vendors or whatever, and
to really show off West Virginia here because you talk
about those products. I mean, those products are products that
yeah they're West Virginia, but they got a nationwide in

(08:38):
many cases a worldwide following. I mean West Virginia Snack Attack.
That's that's got the coach. You've got to have, mister
B's in there. The veteran made I love that. Yeah,
you one that's all veteran made.

Speaker 6 (08:51):
You got veteran made producers. And we want to highlight
these producers. Our ultimate goal is to promote and support
local businesses, creating more visibility for their products and providing
a platform for market expansion and scaling. Because some of
these folks, you know, we are first order Dave if
you can believe, it was for seven hundred boxes nice

(09:14):
and we are up to nine hundred and sixty eight
as of this morning. But this means the world to them,
sure for the worth order to have an order of
seven hundred of their best product or one of their
unique products. So we help entrepreneurs in our in our
programming right, So we have you know, three business coaches

(09:36):
we you know, bring new people into the program. We
often work with startups, but we've got some food producers
that are doing some amazing things and we are really
trying to help them scale.

Speaker 5 (09:47):
Looking at some of the other ones here the Sweet
and Salty that's got the JQ.

Speaker 3 (09:52):
Dickinson airloom salve, but it's also got burnt caramel sauce.

Speaker 6 (09:55):
Yes, well, we all love JAQU Dickinson and they hosted
a special kickoff event for us in September, and we
wanted a box dedicated to them because they do such
phenomenal work. So they have a model that a lot
of these other smaller producers can look to and grow.
But that is our sweet and Salty box. And I

(10:16):
had some of that burnt caramel sauce last night.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
I'm gonna admit, oh really, and you're in The verdict.

Speaker 6 (10:21):
Was oh over ice cream, it's the best, absolutely.

Speaker 3 (10:25):
And you know an apple acchia. We love breakfast at
any time, breakfast for dinner or whatever. We get this
breakfast essential. It comes with Tade's Valley Biscuit Mix, Legacy Foods, Apple,
butter Rock Family Maple syrup, the Coal River Coffee's Wild
and Wonderful Roast, the Hinerman Hills Family Sour Dough pancake mix,
and also their granola. And as we said, there's just

(10:46):
so many of these different things available. How do you
go about getting the West Virginia companies to take part
in this?

Speaker 6 (10:53):
Well, we have done our human's effort to try to
alert corporations that this would be perfect gift to give
to your best clients and have in the break room.
You can reach an order through our website if you're
placing a smaller order, which the website is Taste of

(11:14):
Appalachia dot com. Pretty simple. We hope there's going to
be a crash on the website now with all these
people signing in. We hope and if there, if a
corporation is listening and they like would like to make
an order of ten or more, we encourage you to
contact Rachel Kaufman and she is at three oh four

(11:35):
five four nine eight nine nine to one, or call
the Advantage Valley offices and we will take a bulk.

Speaker 5 (11:42):
Order for you.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
And I'm looking at you know, at your flyer that
you provided me with here. And there's so many other
companies that have helped out with this, you know that
are part of Marshall University, Westbanco, Western You Manufacturers Association,
Bowls Rise, Charles Neir Alliance, Western Executive Magazine, Putnam County
UH Chamber of Commerce. I'm just mentioning a couple of
those there there, because can't do this stuff if you
don't have these other partners in.

Speaker 6 (12:04):
They exactly thank you for mentioning that, Dave. We did
with our kickoff event, we had a full day eleven
to four showcasing of the products, and so these vendors
were out there giving samples. We wanted folks to taste,
you know, before buying. But like you said, some of
these are our already favorites. But we also had a
cocktail event and the whole day we did have a

(12:28):
wonderful array of corporate sponsors helping us out. So thank
you for mentioning those.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
And we want to make sure that people know that
if you are going to order these things, they are
due October the seventeenth.

Speaker 6 (12:40):
Yes, so it's order now. And these boxes are to
be shipped the week after Thanksgiving, so we're talking early
holiday gifts. And but you have to do it now
so I can. This is a great time to buy
and be done with some of those you know.

Speaker 3 (12:56):
You ever thought about doing, like the QVC thing, because
I thank you my be good at it.

Speaker 5 (13:01):
Yeah, but wait, there's more.

Speaker 6 (13:03):
I'll just say when we have shared this idea with folks,
the concept of uplifting our local producers and all of
us can participate in economic development if we buy this way,
we support our people. And once people get that, they
kind of get the chills and they say, I want
to be a part of that.

Speaker 5 (13:23):
At this give us the website, social media, whatever else
you get.

Speaker 6 (13:26):
There are eight more days to shop, so I encourage
you to go to Taste of Appalachia dot com. And again,
if you have a larger order, give us a call
and we will put you in touch with one of
two people who can help you literally upload a spreadsheet
of addresses where you need to have those boxes shipped.
Or we also have a pickup option if you want

(13:47):
to give these gifts and pass them out to your
client's hand delivered, which is a nice touch. I will say,
but I just love this program, and I love these vendors,
and I'm just thrilled to be able to support them.
And I'll tell you we had one vendor who all
of a sudden we gave them an order of seven
hundred and fifty of their product and they were beside them.

Speaker 5 (14:09):
Sure, yeah, wouldn't you be Yeah?

Speaker 6 (14:12):
He also said, now how many how many weeks time?

Speaker 3 (14:15):
Yeah? Yeah, It's like, you know, okay, somebody's got to
pull this thing off. But I'm sure that they'll do
just fine with it. Marjorie, it is a pleasure as
always to have you on the show and the great
work that the Vantage Value folks are doing, and this
is a great program helping out West Virginia companies.

Speaker 5 (14:30):
It's great stuff. I appreciate you being.

Speaker 6 (14:32):
Well, thank you so much, Dave for having us, and
I forgot to bring you a box.

Speaker 5 (14:35):
But I'm going to.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
Okay, all right, that's going to that's not required, but
I'm just I'm allowed to do that. Well, yeah, of
course you again, it's not like Payola the nineteen fifties.
You know, I'm not playing records for you in here.
Whatever I can, I can sample it and may maybe
share it, maybe exactly the couple of these boxes, I'm
gona tell you what they ain't getting shared. If I
get what those boxes, You're on your own, all right, Marjorie,
appreciate you being here.

Speaker 5 (17:35):
Ain't nobody. I'm well about you, Dave. I am doing fine.
Thanks for being here.

Speaker 3 (17:39):
We're not gonna talk sports, you and I because if
we talk sports, it'll be a throwdown and I'll end
up kicking down at the studio. So we're not here
to talk sports today. No, sir, No, not a word
about Penn State. I promise, Kitty. I couldn't resist, man,
I couldn't resist. Got a light in the mood a
little bit.

Speaker 5 (17:54):
Oh yeah, No, it's it's it is what it is.
That's all we can say. Yeah, all right, So what's
on your mind today? You've got something you want to
tell us?

Speaker 10 (18:03):
Yeah, Dave, So, I again appreciate being here, and you
were talking about homecoming. It's not what I want to
talk about. But never forget that. Saint Aums's homecoming game
is tomorrow evening and we've got a homecoming parade this
afternoon at six o'clock, so folks, don't forget about that.
But I'd like to be the tell you and your
listeners first that I will be a candidate for the

(18:26):
Kenall County Commission in the Republican primary in the twenty
twenty sixth election this upcoming May. I come here as
a lifelong Connall County and born and raised here in
Saint Albans, son of a law enforcement officer, Marine Corps veteran,
and love this county as I always have loved my hometown.

(18:53):
And when Commissioner Lance Wheeler, who has decided to run
for the States Senate and District eight, and we wish
him the best luck, I had several people reach out
and say, you know, you've done some positive things in
the city of Saint Albans, would you be interested and
maybe looking at the County Commission and to doing some
research and thoughts and prayers and speaking to friends and

(19:15):
family it is something that I'm going to do. You know,
I want to focus our county. I want to focus
on having positive public safety messaging and working with Sheriff
Joey Crawford and Prosecutor deb Russneck.

Speaker 5 (19:32):
You know, we have.

Speaker 10 (19:32):
Issues in the county with with drugs on and off
the streets. We're going to continue to look at that,
and both Joey and Dev have done great things with that.
I also want to work with both of them on
school safety. Our children is our most important asset that
we have in our county, and we have to make
sure that they're protected at all costs. Also want to

(19:53):
look at economic development. We want to make sure that
we have jobs, new jobs, great jobs for people to
move here. We want people to come from not only
other parts of West Virginia out of state to Kanall County.
Make sure they have places to do and continue to
promote sports tourism. That's huge for me. Look at what's

(20:14):
happened with the trails and Meadowood Park and what's happened
to Shawnee. You know, the Knall County Commission took what
was a failing golf course. And I say that bias
because obviously I love to play golf, play a lot
of golf of Shawnee, but everywhere on the Struggle Bus
and turn that into a great recreation center. One I
used very frequently to play pickleball, just to go walk

(20:36):
and it's a great thing. I want to continue what
the good work that President Selango Commission Wheeler Commission Attendant
has done on bringing sports tourism to Kanall County and
also just to improve and work on the quality of
life here. As I said earlier, we want people to
move here, we want people to enjoy their time in
Kanall County, and you do that. I want to double

(20:59):
the efforts of what the Kennall County Commission. I'll be
the first say they do a great job and dealing
with dilapidata structures, tearing those play those dilapidata structures down.

Speaker 5 (21:09):
That also, you know that that's.

Speaker 10 (21:11):
Kind of a issue where you have a crime take
place at those dilapidata structures. If we can take some
more of those down promote economic growth in those areas,
I think that we're going to continue to succeed as
a county. And I would like to bring that experience
that i've I have as a municipal government as well

(21:33):
as working in state government to the County Commission, and
I think we can we can do great things for
the county.

Speaker 3 (21:39):
Talking to Jared Page again who announced he is going
to be running for County Commission next year, what do
you bring to the table as far as your background,
give us a little bit of your bio.

Speaker 10 (21:49):
Yes, sir, so, I have currently your Saint Alban's vice
mayor as you said earlier, and also councilmen at large
and past life I was also are the Saints municipal judge. Yeah,
I have undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of
Charleston and and multiple things. And so I've been able

(22:10):
to work in the city of Saint Albans in all
of these areas, you know, talking about public safety as
a municipal judge, willing actually working directly with Prosecutor Rusnak
as well as Prosecutor Miller and and and and trying
to clean up our streets of Saint Albans uh as
lot as well as our school resource officer and obviously,

(22:35):
like I said, our sheriff's kind of a Saint Aubin's
staple as well. And so bring that experience UH economic development.
One of my key pieces of legislation that I've been
able to pass on as a councilman is an economic
development driven UH item for our for our Main Street area.

(22:57):
I've had multiple individuals on Main Street come up to
me and say, we've made more money this way because
of this bill that we were able to or this
ordinance that we were able to pass. So I want
to continue to drive that and give our citizens more
opportunities to uh to to to to shop, to enjoy things.
And UH I really am going to UH work on

(23:20):
the dilapidata structure. That's something that as a council person,
I was able to uh to to sponsor and pass
a land reuse ordinance so that way we can create
our own land reuse agency. And I have experienced in
all three of those fields. I've done it on a
municipal level. I've worked with individuals. I have great relationships

(23:41):
with our our state representatives as well as our federal
representatives too, and we've I've been able to work on
dilapidata structure properties in the city to promote growth. And
I want to bring all that experience and relationships from
top to bottom to our County commission.

Speaker 3 (23:59):
DOCI Page again, who has announced he will be running
for County Commission here in Kanaw County. The Dave Island
Show on five of d Line Brown Too, a part
by Morgan and Morgan with more than twenty billion dollars recovered.
They believe that when you're injured, you deserve more. Morgan
and Morgan America's largest injury law firm. So what's the
plan for the campaign? I mean, I mean it's a
little early to announcement.

Speaker 5 (24:18):
That's okay.

Speaker 3 (24:19):
People just do it earlier and earlier, and I guess
that's something you have to do these days. But what's
your attack plan for the campaign?

Speaker 10 (24:25):
Well, it may be a little early, but I feel
at this point, like I said, it's a little actually
a little late.

Speaker 5 (24:31):
You know.

Speaker 10 (24:32):
The plan today is will be filing official paperwork today
at four pm at the County Courthouse, County Clerk's office,
and I will be accompanied by Commissioner Lance Wheeler, Sheriff
Joe Crawford, and Prosecutor Deb Russnack to show their strong
support and endorsement of my candidacy. And we're just going

(24:52):
to hit the ground running. We're going to start a
county wide listing tour, going around meeting individuals from across
the county, listen to what their concerns are. You know,
not all areas in Kanall County have the same the
concerns are same issues, and I really want to be
someone who is accessible from everywhere, from Saint Albans to

(25:13):
Elkview to Campbell's Creek. I throw Campbell's Creek in being
a father's side of the families from Campbell's Creek. Spent
a lot of time there, so I'm a kind of
a half Creaker, but all across the county, be visible,
be able to talk to people and learn what really
the issues are. I've spent a lot of time across
the county over the years, and I think I've got

(25:35):
a decent understanding. But it's important to me to listen
to others and to act on their needs and wants.

Speaker 3 (25:43):
And you know, the thing about Kanawa County is Canada
County's the largest county in the state and it's a
very diverse county.

Speaker 5 (25:48):
And all of the county commissioners, I think, as you
said they do it. They do a great job. The
citting county commissioners and these ones in the past.

Speaker 3 (25:54):
Have you know, there's a lot of commonality I guess
on certain issues, but you know, some of the issues
that maybe Downtown Charleston faces may not be the same
as Campbell's Creek faces. So there's there's some similarities. But
you got to do a good job of being out
there and figuring out well, Okay, well we tried. We
got this issue in a tornado, but it's not necessarily

(26:16):
the same as an issue we've got in South Charleston.
So you've got to kind of put all these things together.

Speaker 10 (26:20):
Yes, you do, and I think that's why I'm a
kind of a unique candidate in this in this race,
and will as the campaign goes on, We'll be dropping
endorsements and supports later from across the county. But I've
gathered support early on from individuals from literally every area
of Kenall County, and it's it's been beneficial to learn

(26:44):
about those concerns, because, like you say, an issue in
Nitro may not be the same as one in Marmette
or Bell or Sissonville. But you know, there are some
things that are consistent. And one of the things I
want to look at is, you know, Raleigh County just passed.
The Rowley County Commission just passed as a county wide

(27:06):
panhandling ordinance. This is something I would like to look
at the can offer as as a potential commissioner to
for Kennall County. You know, you look at Cross Lanes
for example, that's a very busy area.

Speaker 5 (27:20):
Of Cross Vegas.

Speaker 10 (27:21):
Yes, Cross Vegas, Cross Vegas, and it's a very busy
area of our county. And it's been a pleasure of
mine to work with Delegate Shamblain and discuss with him
the issues going on with with the road construction and
all that and Cross Lane. But look, you know, cross
Lane's unincorporated area. You have people uh there that are

(27:41):
you know, constantly on the streets and it's a safety hazard.
It's a safety hazard not only for them, but as
a safety hazard for those in traffic. And when you're
already having a nuisance traffic issue that causing delays consistently,
you don't need to have more. And so this is
that's just one of the few things that you know,
sure that's one specific area, but that could be beneficial

(28:04):
across the county. Obviously, city ordinances, you know that they
have their own if it within city unincorporated area, but
for those that are an unincorporated area, I think this
is something important to look at for the safety of all.

Speaker 3 (28:18):
So what's as I said that you were going to
you know, hit the campaign trail running, You're going to
go door to door, You're going to do meet the
candidate's things, a little bit of everything.

Speaker 10 (28:28):
I will be doing a little bit of everything.

Speaker 11 (28:30):
You know.

Speaker 10 (28:31):
I've already I went to Nitro this past Friday to
their homecoming football game. I met a lot of people,
I saw a lot of old friends, and you know,
I'm want to be hitting the trail that this Friday,
be at our our Saint Amans homecoming football game against
South Charleston. Hopefully Sat AM's get that first big win

(28:54):
this this uh Friday. I think there's a there's hopefully
a chance, you know. But you know, I'll be hitting
door to door, be going next week. I'll be at
Cistonville a few nights, but I'm going to be across
the county. I'm want to be very visible when campaigning
before for city council, I was at every event, not

(29:15):
just all here. I am waving and all that, but
I like to talk to people and you know me.

Speaker 5 (29:19):
Others know me.

Speaker 10 (29:20):
I try to be approachable. I want and I welcome disagreement.
I'm welcome someone talking to me that that may not
necessarily be a supporter of mine or may be unsure.

Speaker 5 (29:31):
I'll welcome that because.

Speaker 10 (29:32):
It makes us better, and it makes us us better
not only as candidates, but as human beings. And I
want to be everywhere. I'm going to be hitting the doors,
hitting the praide, hitting all that. I'll definitely be going
to every city council meeting. I will be meeting with
all municipal mayors, you know someone. I'm a a board
member of the West Virginia Municipal League. I think it's

(29:54):
important as a potential county commissioner for county commissions to
meet with our municipal lead leaders as well as our
state representatives. As I said earlier, I've worked at the
state level for for many years now, and I have
tremendous relationships with our constitutional officers and our members of
our West Virginia Senate and West Virginia House of Delegates.

(30:16):
And I'll be meeting with them, see what their concerns are, uh,
and just build relationships. That's what I think is most
important when it comes to public services, building relationship, building trust,
and that way you can work together and do what's
best for Kennwall County.

Speaker 5 (30:34):
Well, Jared, we wish you the best of luck.

Speaker 3 (30:36):
We'll have you on again, but I did have Can
you take one text about Saint Albans because it was
just a question, why does Saint Albins have their homecoming
parade the day before the game? Is in the two
hours before the kickoff?

Speaker 10 (30:49):
That has been a tradition when I was in homecoming court.
Believe it or not, I was popular back in the
day I was. I was homecoming court all through throughout school.
It's always done before the before what sat And essentially
it's different than other communities because our football field is
not locally, is not downtown or near the school, and

(31:11):
so it's kind of hard to do the parade route
to the football stadium. But there will be a tailgate
before at Crawford Field. I believe it's a five point
thirty but that that's why it's the day before. And
you know, that's a good question, but it's always been
the day before since I was in high school, many
many moons ago. And I would like to say one
last thing. And if that's okay, not about Saint Aubums,

(31:35):
but about somebody who cannot be here, that meant a
lot to me and Mentelta canall county and I would
be remiss if I didn't say something about it.

Speaker 5 (31:44):
And that's just as Tim Armstead.

Speaker 10 (31:48):
Justice Armstead was a friend of mine, first person I
ever campaigned for. When he was Speaker of the House.
I was a little freshman at the University of Charleston,
and of course Tim was a proud alumnus of University
of Charleston, and I met him there and I thought, boy,
you know, this is a.

Speaker 5 (32:04):
Speaker of the House.

Speaker 10 (32:04):
I've got to be, you know, top notch, and really
I'm always professional, but he's the speaker, you know, and
I'm a freshman in college.

Speaker 5 (32:14):
I don't know anything.

Speaker 10 (32:15):
He was the most humble human being. This is the
nicest person. And I say that in the world of
politics and on all levels, you have people who do
it for the right reasons. You have people who do
it for the wrong reasons, and that's just the nature
of the beast. Tim was one of the good guys,
and he always told me that no matter what, if

(32:36):
you do the right thing, it's going to work out,
and if elected the Knall County Commission, I'm going to
continue that mentality and that work ethic that Tim always
shared with me and kept as Speaker and as Justice
as the Supreme Court. And it's going to be said.
I always told Tim when I was first born in
this municipal judge he was who swore me in.

Speaker 5 (32:58):
Came to Saint Om's do it during.

Speaker 10 (33:00):
COVID and I said, you know, Justice, I hope we
get to do this again someday and he said, he said,
you know, well, you've got a great future ahead and
I look forward to doing this. And when I was
sworn in as council and Vice Mayor, he was receiving treatment.
And it's just sad that we've got this opportunity and
he's not here for it. But I just want to

(33:21):
say for the listeners and those in Kannall County or
New Justice Armstead that well he may not be here,
his legacy will never be forgotten with my with me
or with Kannall County Commission if elected, and I planned
to keep the principles that he practiced and keep his
honor alive as a Kennall County Commissioner.

Speaker 3 (33:43):
All right, she had, wishing the best of luck. Thanks
a lot, Thank you very much. I got to say
a fly Eagles flying.

Speaker 5 (33:47):
Oh, here we go. He had to do it.

Speaker 3 (33:50):
He's a big Eagles fan and they play Thursday night football,

Homecoming and Honeyton next week for the Marshall Thundering. But
it's not just about the football game. There's a lot
of other activities that go along with Melanie Pelario and

(37:05):
Walker Tator we're here to talk about it's welcome to
the show, guys, Hello, thanks for having us. I got
to ask you, how did your event go last week?
Because this was a Melanie, this was a Canau Valley
chapter of the Marshall Alumni.

Speaker 5 (37:15):
You had a big kick off at the Roughner last week.
Had to go.

Speaker 17 (37:17):
It was a fabulous turnout, So thank you.

Speaker 5 (37:19):
How many people proximately say over fifty over fifty? Cool success,
big success.

Speaker 3 (37:24):
All right, So it's homecoming next week from Marshall University
Thundering Herd. Of course they have a home game this week,
but homecoming is next week, and we think about homecoming,
we think about the game, which is obviously what it's
all centered around.

Speaker 5 (37:36):
But it's an entire week's worth of.

Speaker 17 (37:37):
Activities, absolutely, and Walker's going to fill us in. We
have some things starting from Monday, something planned every day,
and so I want to get the word out and
hopefully folks from all over the area will come down
and hang with us.

Speaker 7 (37:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 18 (37:51):
Absolutely, So, I mean, you know, homecoming is a special
time on campus that's an opportunity for alums and family
and friends to come back and enjoy all of the
festivities we have. As Melanie mentioned, you know, we start
on Monday, and in the evening of Monday, we have
the Unity Walk, which is something that's planned for the
university where we all kind of come together as a
community and we walk the perimeter of campus and our

(38:14):
Athletic Director, Jerald Harris will actually be giving a keynote address,
so that'll be a fun opportunity.

Speaker 2 (38:20):
You know.

Speaker 18 (38:21):
One of the privileges of our jobs is we get
to coordinate the homecoming Grand Marshall and this year we
have an out of this world Grand Marshal. His name
is Jim Thornton. He's the voice of Wheel of Fortune
and he's coming back to serve as our Grand Marshal
and he'll be there the entire week for all of
these events.

Speaker 2 (38:37):
So even on Wednesday.

Speaker 18 (38:38):
Jim loves Jim Spaghetti, so we're going to be having
a meet Jim at Jim's and that's for the community
to come out and be able to get an autograph
and take it care.

Speaker 3 (38:47):
Of a lot of people aren't aware of that. Jim Thornton,
the Voice of Wheel of Fortune, is a Marshall guy.

Speaker 18 (38:52):
He is He is so he's a Marshall LAMMI he
grew up here in Huntington, and you know, he's been
on the West Coast and he's had a very successful career,
but Marshall's always been his school. And I actually went
to LA a couple of weeks ago and we got
to go on the set of a Whale of Fortune
and get to see him in his element and just
the way that he he leads and he you know,
lets people know he's from this area and represents this community.

(39:14):
It's just out of this world.

Speaker 5 (39:15):
Yeah, I mean so, so just take us through the
rest of the week.

Speaker 18 (39:19):
Yes, So there's also of course student events going on
throughout that week, you know, mentioning the unity to walk
on Monday. The latter part of the week is always
the busiest of course, So with our office and alumni,
we actually get to do office decorating with offices on
campus and you know, our theme this year is will
of Thunder to kind of you know, pay a nod
to Jim in his career. So we'll be doing office

(39:42):
decorating all day and the judging of that on Thursday,
and then that leads us into one of the largest
athletic events during homecoming, which is hoops and Huntington, So
they set up the basketball court downtown and it's an
opportunity for the community to meet the coaches and meet
some of the players and have a fun time downtown.

Speaker 17 (39:59):
And that's a very exciting environment. If are around, need
to come in and watch your you're sitting right there
on Third Avenue and they have the court there and you're.

Speaker 5 (40:09):
Right in front side.

Speaker 17 (40:10):
It's a great, great event, absolutely.

Speaker 18 (40:13):
And then Friday we have the the homecoming parade, which
starts downtown on Fourth Avenue, you know, comes through Huntington
and then ends up in Harlest Dining Hall's filled right
there between Harlest Dining Hall, which is where we have
our homecoming bonfire, and that's usually always a fun time.
We have a lot of vendors and a lot of

(40:33):
people in the parade, but for the bonfire specifically, that's
where we get to kind of have some fun with
the students and they have parade float winners, we have
office decorating winners announced, and just some really good food
and some you know, tunes from the band, and we
have some chance from the cheer team and it's a
lot of fun for everyone to be able to get
together at the bonfire and spend some time together.

Speaker 3 (40:56):

Speaker 5 (41:07):
There's really nothing like homecoming in Huntington.

Speaker 3 (41:11):
I mean, and now now that it looks like fall
is here, you know, if it starts to feel like
fall a little bit, there's just something about it.

Speaker 5 (41:17):
I have said this before as a son of Marshall.

Speaker 3 (41:22):
There is nothing like fall on campus at Marshall University,
when the leaves start to fall and everything and you
see old Maine in the background and just everything. There's
just nothing like it.

Speaker 5 (41:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 18 (41:32):
Absolutely, And you know on Saturday before the big game,
we have the Alumni Telgate, which is something that our
office hosts, and all of these events. I know, sometimes
it's like drinking out of the end of a fire
host but we've got it online. You can just look
up Marshall Homecoming and find all of the events listed.
And we also are going to be putting out some
stuff on our foundation and Alumni Association social media's so

(41:52):
that's at FORMARSHALLU dot org is the website pt at
for Marshall US our tags for social media, so you
can find it there too.

Speaker 3 (42:00):
Yeah, it's going to be a great to a great
week's worth of activities. And I always like to because
you know, Marshall is a institution that's so steeped in
tradition and build around you know, everything revolves around the
around the seventy five, uh, And that's.

Speaker 5 (42:13):
Always a big part of it too. And it's a
special place.

Speaker 17 (42:18):
Is it's an exciting time to be in Huntington on campus. Yeah,
if you're you need something to do, we've got a
lot of activity and it's free and so come and
join us and and participate and connect and reconnect with
the alumni and current students and and.

Speaker 5 (42:35):
You might get to meet the voice of the Wheel
of Fortune. That's right, exactly right.

Speaker 18 (42:39):
And if you come to the game on Saturday, we
have a special surprise that will be up on the
jumbo tron potentially from Van of White and Ryan Seacrest.

Speaker 3 (42:48):
So thanks potentially right, potentially again, hit your website social
media where people can follow along. We'll be talking more
about this, but we wanted to get you in here
early so people can do the planning for next week.
So so hit the website social media.

(49:47):
can you believe how hard this administration is going after Antiva?
They say they're closing in on the leaders of a
group that has no leadership also why goes so hard
after an anti fascist group? Only fascists would go after
an anti fascist group.

Speaker 5 (50:00):
It says a texture.

Speaker 3 (50:01):
Looks like work is finally getting underway in the Fort
Hill Bridge. The deck repair will get underway next Monday
evening and it's going to be done primarily between six
pm and six am, and they're going to work around
the clock on the weekends. So plan accordingly starting Friday
evening if you're coming in and out of the city
of Charleston and you're taking the bridge. But I mean, look,

(50:26):
it's got to be done. I mean we've we've put
band aids on, and band aids on, and band aids on.
An I am no bridge expert or structural engineer, but
I know what I drive over every day coming into
the city and coming out, and it's got to be done.
So the work is going to start Monday evening, so
your commutes will be greatly impacted six pm to six am.

(50:46):
But then on the weekends, because I know a lot
of people coming to Charleston for the different activities going
on on the weekends, there are a lot of folks
that traveled at just be just know that on the
weekends it's pretty much going to be a twenty four
hour thing, and then that's that's the best way to
do it, to be honest with you. And again, hats
off to hopefully, hopefully getting this thing taken care of

(51:08):
Big Piguli Wiggly hotline three zero four three four five
fifty eight fifty eight Tony the Taylor text three zero
four nine three five five zero zero way jex So,
speaking of wheel of Fortune, I can't believe the news
cut into the show last night to bring the news
of a possible deal between Israel and Hamas. Sure, they'll
maybe have peace for a few years, but what thousands
of years of hate between Muslims.

Speaker 5 (51:29):
And Jews will refurface? Resurface rather in some form or another.

Speaker 3 (51:35):
Tex says, while how despicable by a previous text or
not giving the credit to the president on the peace deal.
This has been praised by people on both sides. Democrat
love those two words. Get that Nobel Peace Prize paperwork.
In Andrea Mitchell Andreya Mitchell of NBC News, who said
last week on I Think I Think it was a

(51:58):
Meet the Press in one of the news show, she
said that if President Trump gets this deal done, he
will be in line for a Nobel Peace Prize. And again,
and I'll go back to what the previous texture said,
There's been thousands of years of conflict and so on
and so forth. But yeah, if if this deal gets
done and it turns out the way that people hope

(52:20):
for it too, he'll be in line.

Speaker 5 (52:21):
For a Nobel Peace Prize, make no mistake about it.
I did want to close with this real quickly, and
we're going to get into this a little bit later
on a metric Who's Midday today, But again I mentioned
it earlier. The behavior of some parents, grandparents, and adults
at kids sporting events. I mean, we've all seen the stories,
We've seen the videos online. While the kids are just

(52:44):
trying to play a game, you know, do better well,
they're doing something at Shawnee, they've got a pretty pretty
strict list of things about what you're allowed to do
and about your taunting and things of that nature of
kids we're talking about.

Speaker 3 (52:58):
So we'll get into that coming up on the show
again on the show tomorrow. And Gilla Wanner from the
Cannella Charleston U main association with this week's Adopt Me
Please Pet of the Week, Greg Thomas from Citizens Against
Lawsuit Abuse and Chris Lawrence will be here to talk
high school football doubleheader both Friday and Saturday here on
w CCHS. Ryan Nicholson Senior produced to Thank you so much,
Seeing you later today on Metro News midday. Till then,
have fun and love somebody.

Speaker 2 (53:33):
