Speaker 1 (00:04):
Use the lighting we have. LA's covered in smoke. Hi,
welcome to When Calls the Heart, episode one of season twelve,
but ten to twelve. Here on jail j Media, I
am under a cloud of smoke and ash here in
Los Angeles. I want to first say to all the

(00:25):
heartys like myself, for going through this in southern California,
specifically Los Angeles area and surrounding parts. My heart goes
out to you. If you're I don't people are going
through it. I am okay, I want you guys know
thanks for all the messages and check ins and all that.
My world is much easier than some other people's. Wo,

(00:50):
how'd they going through it? I was on the back
watch last night because of the fires in Santa Monica,
on the farm of Santa Monica. But we'd have to leave,
thank God. But we're ready. My brother and I and
my mother have already discussed. Everybody's fine. We've discussed our
continguency plans. If we were staying, we had to leave,
and and it basically it's just I'm staying indoors. The outside.

(01:14):
It's just it's literally it's covered in and it's making
it a weird lighting issue for me and also in
ant issue. We had no power few nights ago, but
we got it back. This has been scary times down here,
very scary fires. We're smucking up everywhere and to go fast.
And I've been in a house fire myself, and I've

(01:34):
lost everything, so I know what it feels like. So
my heart goes up to those who have lost stuff
and are losing I have friends who've lost homes and
businesses already. Listen, two days I just got back to Telly.
I've been gone. I've been in New York and the
East Coast this whole time. I came back to this.
So I it's everybody. Everybody's on edge. Nobody's saying everybody's

(01:55):
on edge. I'm hoping today it's going to get it's
getting started the process of getting better. I just I
can't watch the news twenty four seven is it's too
much by begetting my updates as I can. But thank
you so much for your You're looking out for me,
my former co host, still good friend, your hearty Meru
Serafini did have to evacuate last night. She is somewhere safe,

(02:18):
She is okay. I talked to her today. She's okay.
So you guys saw that she posted that. We were
asking me though she is she is fine, but they
didn't have to evacuate her area in Hollywood. Just that
just crazy talk. So but she is okay. So that's
everything for that is when I get that out and
the open first. So to what that also adds to

(02:41):
why this episode's out on a weird day at Thursday.
I went back to Monday. It's like I usually do
starting next week. I just I was traveling out town
from New York. Then the fires happened. I couldn't. I
was trying to handle all that. So today's my first
day I was able to actually g shows. So normally Monday,
what with the reaction Mondays Monday's jailj media, audio and video.

(03:04):
We're everywhere. If you're new, it is fine. It just
found me. Hi. I'm James D Jr. I am a
hearty from way way way way way wait, way way
way way way back. Yeah, and a proud hearty. I
love it and I've been doing the show for almost
a whole ten years. It's now or eleven years out

(03:27):
we did. I started doing reviews at Afterbus TV's Seraphinia
and Ria Promnzano ten almost ten years ago. Some almost
been days, like about ten years ago, and we did
it starting with season two on so on my channel,
I do have all of our episodes that we've done
in the past, season by season and playlist. You can
check out all of them. And I've been doing them

(03:48):
on my own for the last few years under JLJ Media.
So I have my reactions with videos what do you
call it? A stuff from when I went to HFR
two for seasons up there, and then of course interviews.
I almost of the cast. I do the interviews. I'll
be doing that again and every season at the end,
me and Brian Bird sit down and have like a

(04:08):
huge talk. We do it every season. It's good in
a big tradition. So check all that stuff out audio
or video, and I say audio. We're on iHeartRadio, Spotify, Google, Apple, Amazon,
wherever you find your podcast needs. Let me drink this.
That's water, I trust me. Okay. My social stress is

(04:30):
because of the air quality. I'm trying to stay in,
but I have to go outside and take trash out
and get mailed. I try to wear a mask, but
it's just sometimes it just makes it whatever. But but
excuse my voice. It's nineteen twenty one. It's nineteen twenty one.
A Rosemary said it, nineteen twenty one. We're in the twenties,
the roaring twenties, just like we are today. We're in

(04:53):
nineteen twenty Noo, we're in twenty twenty five, so we're
literally one hundred some years later. The trip right A
about you guys, you Hardy's out there, who are watching me?
You're listening right now? It feels like after watching the episode,
I felt two things. One, it was a solid episode.

(05:14):
It was a solid episode with good writing, good acting
for some of the kids, setting up story, write amount
of about every little bit everything, write amount of stuff.
It was good. We saw most of the cast it
was I thought was well done. Lindsey and all of
them who are executive producing it, good job. Uh. The

(05:36):
second part, it does forel like a little sense of new,
of renewal. We're in season twelve. A lot of shows
that are decades long or a decade and a half
where they usually lose their luster after a while they're
on You're like, yeah, and it happens. But I liking

(05:58):
this to this the show cheat you, cheers, everybody knows
your name, all things nor you know all that stuff
cheers when the you know, half of the series was
all about Jack and Jack said Jack Salm and dian
I got Jack in the brain Salmon, Dian and it
was shut long left, and they brought a Christy Alley

(06:21):
as Rebecca. It gave it a new renewal and the
show was a whole. It was still it was still
kind of like the old show, but also a newer show.
This feels the same way. It's just it's just renewed
for season twelve. And that's good. That's a great thing. Again.
So I felt after the show is over, I felt comforted.

(06:46):
It felt good, but I also felt, oh this is
this is We're going sore with this and I'm really
curious what they're doing. So I will have my notes
over here because I know there's things I don't want
to miss. Let's start from the beginning thing. The show
is called the Mounty Way, and that's completely this was.
This was a Jack heavy episode, meaning Jack's memory and

(07:13):
little Jack literally speaking. I love it. I thought, how
smart the show is is now now he's in twelve,
but the show is smart and say, okay, we're now
it's taking a stance they're going with Nathan and Elizabeth.
We're going forward with this, see it. It's it's going

(07:34):
forward and I think it's smart too. And to do
that not to forget about Jack and Jack shon Awesomes
he died on the show. While he died and show up,
I'm saying, if you realize the guy is still around,
we need Jack's memory is still around, and they're doing
the right amount. They're making him into a legend, which

(07:56):
I fully support. I fully support that why not right
and that this whole Nathan thing is undercurrent of well,
Nathan is part of all that. Where does that mean? Later?
Loved it? But makes sense. I'm here for it. In
the beginning when they pick up right we left off,

(08:17):
and it's pretended Hard Graves who's he puts the heart
and Hard Graves says they found something. He shaved Nathan too.
It's kind of he's not he gives Nathan gets a
lot of shade from him. But this guy is like
kind of a hard almost almost said something person. He's say,

(08:38):
he's rough, no nonsense. They found this metal that was
Jack's for bravery. I got a little teary eyed. I
don't know, because I'm going through a lot of stuff
right now, if them all these things going on here
l a, but I got a little teary. I'm like,
oh my goodness, and the way they presented it and

(09:00):
how he's a legend, and throughout the whole episode, how
this metal is. It's so when calls the heart at
its heartiness, what that metal represents and how it could
be used to help give others courage. It was a
middle of bravery and the thee the through lines through
the whole episode was that, and good job writers, good

(09:25):
job with that. Also you find out, of course that
newskey and new recruit which we meet later, Oliver, which
we meet him later, and then Jack and Jack Jack
Wagner I said that it's a Jack episode. Bill walks over,
It was like, what's going on? And then Nathan and
Homegirl kiss in front of him. So now it's coming

(09:46):
out and his reaction is just hilarious. Of course he's
all for it. The music and the intro, updated the
changing a little bit, updated them on a horse on Saturday,
updated that okay, little Jack starts school that I was like, wow,
we really have gotten that the shows are on the

(10:08):
air that long. He starts school, that little actor. I'm sorry,
I don't know his name. I need to learn his name.
He is so cute and he does such a great job.
And I've said this, I mean a million times before.
The casting director gets should gets lots of points because
they always seem to cast really good kids, kid actors

(10:31):
who can act. I say that with a little shade
because I do watch other programs and sometimes you're like,
where they find that thing? That kid, these actors, these
kids can actually carry story. And the kid who plays
Little Jack, he's the whole episode. He is he's speaking
and he's like really driving and carrying story. And they

(10:53):
bring up something that we're all thinking, which I almost
forgot about. I forget about it. Little Jack. We'll go
to school. She's the teacher, so she will be his
mother and his teacher. That's me. It's almost like when
you live together and you work together. That's interesting. They're

(11:16):
showing the kids. The kids are growing growing up. Oh
my gosh, like growing up. I love it. And rosemany
of course, those bith they always have to have their
walking talks always. Goldie is so cute, all that hair,
she's like really growing up with our eyes. But they
always they're walking talks and of course Rosemary does the
gossip about Nathan and her. How are talking to town

(11:41):
of course, small town, of course they are. And about
this park that's being big, not the big stories to
park this season that Lee and Lucas are are probably
put together, so that's that's a big thing. They mentioned
some of the things, uh, Mike, and they're all they're

(12:02):
on her honeymoon, so there's they's doing her honeymoon. Face
still has low lily, so that's that's really nice. Angela
graduates this year and later there's a scene that I
thought was every parent's kind of like, oh, no, she
wants to go to college for the blind actually in Hamilton.

(12:25):
Hamilton's still always mentioned, right, And Minnie's just like, oh,
it's like, that's that's total apparent thing, right, it's only
apparent thing. As I'm recording this, my younger daughter turns
thirty six on Saturday. Yes, I know, I have a
thirty six year old daughter. It's not it's not fair.
I'm only thirty eight now. But I remember taking when

(12:46):
she got accepted to college and her mother and I
took her over. We took her to Saint John's New
York and got her ready in her room and bought it.
I mean, I remember being so sad leaving her there
across the country, but you know we were and I
you know, but like the can Fields, they raised Angela
to be self sufficient and strong and brave. My brain again, right,

(13:07):
but the parent he was like, I don't want them
that far away to Lee. You know, I could see
Minny and Joseph kind of like they give each other
a look, and it's like, that's totally apparent thing. I
totally get it. Little Jack sydes take the medal and
put it near his dad's picture. They have a little table.
I love to have that. I love that. That's they
We're not trying to forget him, trying to replace him.

(13:28):
He's there and it's fine. So the big storyline of
the episode is that Lucas really needs Lee, who is
the mayor, look is still the governor. He needs his
good graces to kind of smooth over this whole thing
about getting this this national park. Lucas taking a hit
from his stuff with Jeanette from the previous season, which

(13:52):
Rosemary promptly brought in his face later. But they need
they need Lee to come to Capital city and be
gone for between a week and a month. So a
whole thing comes up about work versus family life. Right,
that's a time and then again, what one couset of
heart does these timely issues they have, they bring stuff

(14:17):
up that's contemporary. She can relate to it also, But
there's always been something that's been around forever. It's like, well,
they've never really been a part that long, and what
it's just me and she has the value voice to
run and Goldie's growing up and Lee wants to do it. Obviously,
Roseberry's like, and I love my girl passcal Away. She
looked into the looks she gives to them, and even

(14:39):
Henry loves it. He's just like laughing in the corner.
But Lucas really wants Lee to be with him. They
introduced comic books. The kid the older kids, Cooper and
were into the comic books. I'm like, okay, it's something
something about Captain Billy or whatever. I looked at. Its
not for real entered up. But that's but it's funny

(15:02):
because some of the girls are like, but books are
the where it's at they have and these things have
pictures more than words. Like that's very funny to have
that debate, you know, comic books versus and it's and
the adults like like it was for kids, like kids
are buying us. It's very interesting to take right. It's
like you think, like that's probably how they felt when

(15:22):
they first started. We're in this nineteen twenty one, we're
now canre to get into that, sorry, because I always
think every season you can tell the town's getting bigger
and bigger as they walk through it. But always interesting, interesting,
what are they gonna what are they gonna introduce? And
and they you know, with the phone and the car,
and I love it so comic books. So now first

(15:48):
thing is school is about to happen, and Ali and
Elizabeth had to have their little talk, which is very sweet.
She has the book, Doctor Doolittle looked it up, got
to do a little of the book, which I think
I've read. It's a kid I can't remember. Came out
in nineteen twenty out timely right, So but they talked
and how She's like, I just want to be here

(16:08):
for you. I thought I was a very realistic talk
and really good talk where you're just talking about you know,
I just want you know I'm not here taking the
place to your dad, your mom, you know, any anybody.
I was your teacher. I want to continue to be
your teacher and kind of, you know, mentor and guide.
But I do care about your dad. I came about
you too, So it was a really it was a
really realistic woman to woman in conversation. I really liked it.

(16:30):
And we know, you know, Allie's always one of this
for a long time. So she's over the moon, so
she's happy. The next thing they bring up, so we
got family first versus job, comic books versus comic versus books.
The next thing it comes up is radio versus newspaper.
I was laughing her because I was like, I was,

(16:52):
I was somewhere was I. I was in New York
and I saw a newspaper. I'm like a newspaper, Like,
I haven't read a newspaper. I almost got it. I
might give them one day because I'm just kind of curious.
I don't. I don't. I mean, I used to love
the news. I used to love the news river, but
this radio craze and air quaked, and well, he's like,
it'll fizzle, I'll fizzle up like anything. Of course, obviously

(17:13):
it doesn't but I thought that's so fuss. So now
folks seemed to radio more, which makes sense. And as
but as Lee and rosemany who are the best couple
on the show. Sorry, I'm just I'm gonna say they're
the best couple on the show because they're realistic, they
talk about things, they love each other, I mean the best,
but they're good together, and they kind of between the
two of them came up with news on the radio.

(17:37):
And what makes me laugh is that here in La
ten to seventy news radio is gone now. It used
to be on East AM, and I think now it's
I think now it's another channel and ever to be
the same. My stepdad, I'm always listened to ten seventy
in the car and in the bathroom were getting ready

(17:58):
for work. He would listen to it. And I just
had just at am has its own sound and it's
news is talk radio, and that's something that I want
to do. And so just as I'm celebrating ten years
next month of doing these videos, ten years of reaction,
I tag can't believe it. At the time I was

(18:19):
on the radio doing talk radio and that show I
still have. It's going on his tenth year this year
also later in June. So when you say talk to me,
I'm like, I just that's just my affections are towards that.
But they come, they come to this kind of conclusion.
We shaped the news on the radio and later she

(18:41):
calls it the Valley Village Radio Hour and maybe add
some singing. And so I love it. I would love
to be back then producing it. I mean, that's just
that's just that's what I do. But also the real
reason why Rosemary has such an attitude about Lee leaving,
well she does would missis stuff she still concerns about Lucas.

(19:02):
We always don't to trust Rosemary rosebary' is smart. Run
the block of movement and she does going on. But
she's just after all that Messa from last year, She's like,
I'm still concerned about it just makes her nervous. So
keep it in mind, folks, she said it, she said it,
So keep that in mind. So throughout the episode, Nathan

(19:25):
is having these just wrestle with himself moments, and he
he's with one where he's talking to he talks to
Rosemary later, which is like interesting. Rosemary and Nathan talked
that was very interesting. But her and but him and
Elizabeth and his big concern, which is a great storyline
for the future. Obviously when he gets gets old enough,

(19:47):
Jack wants to know what happened to his dad, and
Nate's going to explain and through the whole episode, what
I what I enjoyed though, was we can't we don't
know about the future, right so right now we got
to can't sit and worry about sit and wait and
worry about it. Let's build memories now. So the point
is you have he has you now, You have each

(20:07):
other now later because he may find that it doesn't
matter later or it's not a big deal, or maybe
it's a big deal. Who knows, But let's build that
relationship together now because he can have Jack's memory and
have Nathan in real life. I've had stepparents, stepfathers. I'm
close to you, So I was like, well, see, so
I understand that situation, but they keep me out there

(20:31):
for a future storyline like the show goes to season
twenty or twenty, was like that, who knows they can
have that. Hall has a great storyline to go through
right there, so they can do that. New cadet Oliver
Garrett comes in and him in. Uh and uh God, Alie,

(20:54):
have a couple of little run ins, keep run in.
I'm already predicting romance. She's a that age now, and
he's I'm thinking it's gonna I think it's gonna happen.
But he's very gung ho ready to do this again.
He's heard of Jack, he's heard of Bill, Bill and
that scene what Bill was hilarious at the restaurant. He's

(21:14):
even that meat look. He's like, yeah, I read your book,
and well, I'm I thought I thought I thought they
stopped pretty that I thought it was out of print
or whatever, and it was like, yeah, I just kind
of skimmed through it. I didn't really read it. That
was cute. But forensics, and Oliver goes in the whole
future of forensics. Forensic science all true of course, right,

(21:35):
we know it's all true, so very interesting, right, So
that's that's that's gonna get a trip as he get
into that. Uh, I'd love the lunch box that uh
man was Gabe's Jack. I want one. I love lunchboxes.
And she pinned the medal on him, which got me
teary eyed again to wear for bravery for school. And

(22:01):
then of course the fact that the part that really
almost got me crying a little bit. I'm a big
softy now is when Lily is scared to go out
because she's the younger kids. She's talking to a faith
and it's been said, tells Jack what's going on. Jack
wants to help her. There's the cute little kids and
they literally acts out the scene and he looks at

(22:23):
his mom. They looks at her and passes the middle
on to her to wear all day. Oh my gosh,
let's just pull the heart strings out of me and
just throw them all around the room. I was like,
I could sit here and just start sobbing at how
cute and precious that was, and what a great lesson
that is, I said, the little kids they acted it out.

(22:44):
In the end, she gives it. She's like, thank you,
she gives the little back and everything's Everything's like I
just oh, I love when I do a little message
like that to me, this kindness, compassion, that that metal
which represents all that I love it. We got Heu
a little scout dog running around. Of course, meets Oliver.
Oliver we learn at some point he's from Jamison. He

(23:06):
actually has his father passed his mother went quote back
East somewhere, something's going on there. And even Nathan's like,
there's something off about him. There's something going on. So
we got a little mystery, which I have no problem
with that. In school, we have three different books that
the kids are reading do via age, not too little

(23:31):
of course, for the younger ones. For the middle school
was Secret Garden, which came out in nineteen eleven. I'm trying.
Did I read that? I can't remember. Sounds familiar. And
of course the book we all read, Moby Dick. It
was about eighteen fifty one. That's the older kids. And
she had a book for the Braille for Angela love it.

(23:53):
One of the ways to get lives without her get
excuse me, Rosemary. On their side, which I thought was
hilarious but meaningful is naming the National Park after Goldie
Marigold Culture Park or Goldie Park National Park. Lizabeth. He
started to soften on that one. The scene of Joseph

(24:15):
and Henry playing chess outside having a drink. Loved it.
Two dudes just like out there talking to shooting the breeze.
Loved it. I think it's a great addition to the show.
Their friendship Henry had some crops are coming in some
curious having with that. But they're friends, and we've seen

(24:35):
the friendship grow and morph and growing. They're friends, and
it was like nothing dramatic and nothing you mentioned about
Angelo want to leave and mothers and daughters and fathers
and sons like that. But it's just like two guys
shooting the brees and Joseph wins of course, and they
have a little funny moment. I chuckle. I just love
that they brought that in there too. The comic book arrives,

(24:56):
the kids go book wild. Give me the scene. That's
very interesting, I said. Saddling up the pony, Little Jack
asked Nathan if he knew his dad, like oops, oops
and earlier and break use of we call a throwback

(25:17):
or a ping back the word reflective, because that's what
Elizabeth said to her son in the beginning the episode.
She's being reflected. To explain it. He used that, said,
what is being reflected and explains it. He's like, oh, o,
goat big word for you. I love that ping bag.
But it does a racing episode. A scene that was
kind of like, I didn't know your father, but he's

(25:39):
a hero and you know, he's kind of like and
he tells mounting Nathan he's happy he's in their lives
and the whole thing. So it's kind of it was
a little touchy subject. Let's see on the train. Oh
my god, a funny part on the train. Lee Lucas

(26:02):
on the train and go back and forth. Edward returns.
When I was I did not know he was coming back.
That character. He's really good. He's so slimy. But it's
funny when Lee looks, he goes, oh, he goes, oh,
look who's here or whatever I saw it. We saw
it to the door, picket to the door. That was hilarious.
He comes in. Lee wouldn't move over. Lee didn't shake
his head. He was given a major shame. He was like, oh,

(26:24):
I'm not it's just Edwin person. But Edwin was bringing
the political part of this lobbyist was all just all
true stuff right to Lucas and basically after the job
back and so they said they'll talk and get back
to the office. But I think I need somee like
Edwin around to kind of handle that stuff because it
is political. Lee can't you can't, you know, this is

(26:46):
life still going on today. You can't you can't, you know,
you can't deny that. But the character Edwind, it just
makes me laugh because he's just so he's so so right.
That's fun. And at the end we have a cute
callback where Nathan comes in and he made something to
put the metal in. So that was also a touching,

(27:06):
great touching moment. Again, such a great a great episode,
really great episode. I'm excited see what happens next. This
park thing obviously is a big thing there. We have
more new characters coming on. But again, it was it
was it was the right amount of everything right. It

(27:27):
was like, it's like the right amount so everything and
a jam packed had that forty to fifty minutes in there.
I'll get to them. They did. So that's my reaction
and my review of When Calls the Heart Season twelve,
episode one. I will be back so two three in
the rest usually on Mondays. Unless something happens. I'm assuming

(27:49):
we're gonna start getting stuff nder control here. I hope,
so God willing right in la but nothing barring anything.
Actually back on Monday night doing this look out and
look for it, look out for interviews, what kind of
stuff this season? I am ready to do this I'm
so glad it's back. It's it's a mainstay in my
life and in yours too, And you guys are a

(28:10):
mainstay in my life. I love the Hearty's, I am
a hearty all that stuff. I'm James Loch and James
Latchingr is her soul. That James lodgr and all social
media platforms. I am there and I will talk to
you next time. Have a good weekend. Why

I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
