Which Murderer Flashback Episode!

Merry/Happy Christmas everybody! Our 30th episode focuses on Christmas murders....we discuss the tragic murder of Joanna Yeates and the Christmas Day massacre committed by Bruce Pardo. We realise that Holly is way too presumptuous to sit on a jury. Holly also completely traumatises Gemma and she will never look at Santa the same again. Then we propose a new mating ritual that is bound to be successful with the human race.

Production, recording and mixing completed by Santa’s little elf, Craig. He and Cleo took the cutest Christmas picture this week, they are #couplegoals.

Editing completed by Gemma, who is hoping Santa can bring her headphones that don’t flatten her hair so much.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Girl, girl, if you like, is he sitting? Is he comfortable?
I think now he is.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Now he's comfortable. We've got his thumbs up. Hello everybody,
and hello.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Holly, Hello Gemma. How are you this evening? I'm all right,
how are you? I'm well, thank you? And Happy Christmas.
Happy Christmas. Yes, Merry Christmas. How do you see Mary?
I say the merry because I'm Canadian. I see I
see happy because I'm Irish. My mom's like, we don't
see merry Christmas. We say happy Christmas, all right, then mom,

(00:49):
she gets a bit touchy about that. We also don't
see New Year's We say New Year's Eve or New
Year's Day. Really, new Year's is like a American probably
a Canadian thing. Yeah yeah, we say New Year's Yeah
yeah yeah. Anyway, childhood of watching friends have drilled that

(01:09):
into me. Anyway. Yes, this is which murderers.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Murderer just drawn on about pointless things beforehand, and this
episode we're talking about Christmas murders.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Christmas murders just to ruin.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
You're a little fun with some sad stories, but interesting.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Yeah, well we like it, so Merry Christmas to us.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Actually for Christmas, I got Holly a book on murderers
are in jail for life.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
I was so excited. I can't wait some good.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Christmas reading for her. You're going to jump in and
jump in with this. My murder victim is a woman
called Joanna.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Yeats Are you doing a Canadian one? She's English? Who's Canadian?
Thank you? Somebody else? Never mind?

Speaker 3 (01:57):
God.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
She was alone escape architects who lived in Bristol with
her boyfriend Greg, who was also an architect. Greg was
on a weekend away in Sheffield. See this is definitely English. Yeah, yeah,
weekends away on the eighteenth to the nineteenth of December
twenty ten, and on return he found out the flat

(02:19):
was empty and their cat looked neglected. No, yeah, so
I think it had been alone all weekends.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Oh no.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
He'd attempted to call Joanna, but her phone started a
ring in the flat. Greg contacted the police that night
and reported Joanna missing. She had been last seen by
colleagues on Friday, the seventeenth and evening out in Bristol,
and she left the pub at eight o'clock and walked home.
Her friends reported at Joanna had said that she'd been

(02:47):
nervous about spending the weekend alone. As it was her
first without Greg, and she said she was going to
spend a weekend Christmas shopping and baking.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
That sounds like such a good weekend.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
I know.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
I can't wait to do that. At the baking, not
the shopping. I'd rather kill myself.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Joanna had been seen on CCTV leaving a Tesco shop
after buying pizza, and it was thought that she managed
to return home as her bag, quote and mobile phone
were all there right, and then she was taken from
the flat.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
Later on Oh my god, that's horrible. Joanna's family and friends.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
They commenced a social network appeal for information and the
police had a press conference. The police stated that there
was no sign of forced entry at the flat and
believed that Joanna maybe knew her attacker. Her body was
found on Christmas Day twenty ten by a couple walking
their dogs along a quarry. It was approximately three miles

(03:43):
from their flat and her body was fully clothed.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
Oh okay.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
The post mortem initially believed that Joanna may have frozen
to death due to no obvious cause of death. Initially, however,
it was then established that she had been strangled. As always,
our boyfriend was prime suspect of course. However, he was
quickly ruled out after searches of his phone and computer
and establishment of his whereabouts.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Joanna's death was also linked to several other unsolved cases
in Bristol. However, no further evidence was linked apart from
sort of similar. You know, they were found clothed and
they'd been strangled, but there was nothing really else that
was tying them together.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
So was she like sexually assaulted? Not according to the
post mortem? Oh right, okay. I think she was.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Found with her top pushed up to her neck, but
her braw was still on and nothing else. I don't
think there was any other evidence of sexual assault.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
Usual. That was quite unusual.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
On the thirtieth of December, Christopher Jeffries was arrested for
the murder of Jana Yeats. He was johann and Gregg's landlord.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
No.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
However, after a long period of questioning, he was released
and was no longer considered a suspect. He later won
a civil case against several newspapers over their coverage of
his arrest, and The Sun in the Daily Mirror were
found guilty of contempt of court for reporting information that
could be prejudicial in a trial. So there was this
big drama about the newspapers reported that he had been

(05:19):
arrested and he was this and he was that when
he wasn't actually formally charged with anything.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
But was is Did he do it? No? No, oh,
my god, because I one hundred percent convicted him in
my head the minute you said landlord, when there was
the landlord. He did it?

Speaker 2 (05:35):
No, I know, but maybe that's because I built it
up like that, Okay, because when I was first reading it,
I was like, yes, he did it was typing up
and I was like, oh, wait, no, he actually.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
Didn't do it. I genuinely think this is the reason
that I never get picked for a jury. He did it.
He did sitting there is a landlord. He's one hundred
percent killed somebody, all right.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Then on the twentieth of January, a man named Vincent
Tabac was arrested. Tabak was the neighbor of Joanna and
Greg Oh. This arrest came after a crime Watch appeal
an anonymous tip from a female.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Collar Did you ever watch Crime Watch? Nah? Oh? I
loved Crime Watch. I watched it when I was like ten,
Is it like the equivalent of crime Stoppers? In the
UK or like America's Most Wanted. Yeah, it's like that, okay, but.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
I would watch it at night and then terrify myself
and then not be.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Able to sleep. Yeah, it never interested me. I just
want to know the whole story. I don't want to
know like if somebody's I don't know it just Yeah,
I like the whole unsolved thing, So maybe that's why
I liked it. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
He had previously been ruled out as a suspect earlier
on investigation, but there was minute traces of DNA found
on Joanna's body that matched his, and a search of
his computer found that he'd been watching violent pornography, including
videos of women being choked.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
Oh okay. There was also.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Images of child pornography found on his computer, and he
was later found guilty of possessing these images.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Oh.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Prick's back or Tabok, initially denied that he murdered Joanna.
He then attempted to be guilty to manslaughter, but he
was found guilty of murder right a trial. The prosecution's
case was that Joanna was approached by him once she
returned to her flat, that she was pinned to the
floor by force and strangled. However, during the struggle, Joanna

(07:20):
sustained multiple injuries to her face and neck, including a
broken nose.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
Holy shit.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
Okay, However, the prosecution didn't offer a motive for this.
They just said this is what happened, right, and to
back took a stand. Took this stand and his defense
and claimed that the murder was not sexually motivated. That
he strangled her as she started screaming when he attempted
to kiss her.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
I kind of believe that because there was no sexual assault.
I think maybe too, I believe that, yeah, but I
don't believe the rest of this. He stated that he
thought she was flirting with him, and that he held
his hands over her mouth to stop her screaming, and
that's when she died. He said that he held her

(08:07):
head for in twenty seconds with minimal force.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
I mean, I know that I always scream when I
flirt with men.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
Oh yeah, that's just like the sort of thing. Yeah,
But twenty seconds with minimal force is not enough to
kill anybody.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
It's not He's half time.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
I think you need to strangle someone for minutes before
they actually die.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
Yeah, because your brain will stop the oxygen, he'll stop breathing,
but then it'll be started again. Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Yeah, so maybe he was right in saying that that's
how it started. That maybe he tried to kiss her
and she started screaming. Yeah, yeah, but he knew he
was going to kill her, because we can't you have
to strangle.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
Someone for a long time. Yeah, definitely.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
The jury deliberated for two days and returned with a
majority verdict of guilty, and he was sentenced to life
with a minimum term of twenty years. And is he
still Yes, yes, he's still in prison. Okay, hopefully he
stays there for a while.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
Yeah, I hope. So, I like, my god, can you imagine, Sorry,
I'm just going off on a totally different tangent. Can
you imagine if, like as human beings, that's how we
made it, Like as we screamed at each other when
we were interested in somebody, like some sort of like
bird that just like squawks each other like dream meetings,

(09:27):
you imagine that was like how you showed interest in
the opposite sex. It was like or the same sex.
Even like lah screaming in somebody's face. I mean that
happens when you're drinking. But you know what I mean? Like,
I don't think we'd be as evolved as we are now.
If that's no, no, it'd be very unsettling. I hope
nobody ever tries that in my head now. Anyway, On

(09:54):
that note, guys, that is my case finished. That's very good.
Thank you.

Speaker 3 (10:06):
Hey everyone, This is Sarah from Goodnightmare Podcast, a podcast
where I like to talk about all things strange and unusual,
whether it's mysteries, historical crimes, or fairytale origins. I hope
you'll come along for the ride and join me as
we delve into some speaky tales.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
Happy listening, all right, are you ready for my story?
I'm ready. You're so excited. I'm so excited about this one.
It's tragic, but it was so good you would think
it was a movie. Okay, I think diehard. I am

(10:45):
telling you the Christmas Tale of mister Bruce Pardo. Have
you heard it?

Speaker 2 (10:51):
Idea?

Speaker 1 (10:52):
Okay? He was born in nineteen sixty three. I just
have a note there. So, at around eleven thirty PM
on the twenty fourth of December, also known as Christmas Eve,
in two thousand and eight, in Covena, California, which is
like a suburb of La Okay, man named Bruce Jeffrey

(11:12):
Pardo knocked on the door of his ex inlaws house
dressed as Santa. Oh oh yeah, was he expected because no,
well that's even weirder. Yeah, well, I mean yeah, it's
the whole thing. Yeah. So there are about twenty five
people in the house at the time. It was like
a big Christmas party going on Christmas Eve. Family. Family, family. Oh, okay,

(11:35):
Bruce was carrying a gift trap package and a semi
automatic cangun. Oh. Well, of course Santa needs to have
his handgun with Yeah, I know. He had three other
semi automatic handguns in his possession, which just ties back
to our whole debate on the bombles Pit podcast when
we had about gun control. Why does it need to
be automatic weapons? Absolutely? Absolutely, the gift trap package and

(12:00):
he guesses a bomb a flamethrower. No, Santa fucking had
a flamethrower. I was so excited when I read this.
A flame thrower. Flame thrower, I did meant business. Oh,
he meant business. So when the door opened, this is okay,
this is where it has to get really sad and
serious because it was tragic. Okay. When the door opened,

(12:21):
Bruce shot at an eight year old girl as she
ran to greet him. Oh my god, what I see?
How I ruined Christmas? There she was running to greet Santa.
Santa shot her. That is the most awful thing about
her in my life. I know, Isn't it bad? It's
horrible because it's but he chose to dress up as
Santa for that reason. That is awful, sick. I mean,

(12:44):
that girl is never gonna want to see Christmas again.
Well did she survive? Oh anyway, la la la? Oh
my god. So yeah, my next sentence injuring her in
the face bracket. She lived, she loved, She lived. Yes, okay,

(13:05):
you feel better now, yeah, okay. I mean she's still
fucking scarred for life, both like in features and with Christmas.
But she lived. So after that, he started firing indiscriminately
at the fleeing partygoers. But I don't think it was
I mean, he was shooting like a crazy person, but

(13:25):
he definitely targeted certain people. Okay, it's believed he stood
over some of the victims who were injured and then
just point blank executed them like a skill shooter. Button. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
After he was finished shooting, Bruce unwrapped the package containing
his homemade flamethrower, and I just want to put out there,
don't make a flamethrower at home. It's not going to
end well. It didn't end well, okay, and used it
to spray racing fuel gas around, setting the house on fire.
Nine people died, either from gunfire or flames, and three

(13:59):
others were wounded. The eight year old girl who was
shot in the face had severe but non life threatening injuries,
a sixteen year old girl was shot in the back,
and a twenty year old woman suffered a broken ankle
after jumping out of a second floor window. But those
ones lived, Okay. I'm so like shot, but also happy

(14:19):
that that little girl lived because a shot to the face.
A shot to the face. And I don't know what
caliber it was, semi automatic. I'm going to guess maybe
thirty caliber three. I don't know. I'm making su up now,
I'm lying. Listen to me. So the fire, it was huge.
Obviously racing fuel it will burn. Wait, I don't know
what like racing cars fuel. Yeah, right, So I think

(14:41):
it's like at a higher octane, which is like jet
fuel as well. So I think it just burns like
hotter and quicker. Yeah, okay. The fire took eighty firefighters
and Aaron have to put out, and because of the heat,
the victims had to be identified by dental and medical records.
There was not much left. It was really horrible. So
after the attack, Bruce changed into normal clothes and drove

(15:03):
his car, which was the same car I used to drive,
which is a Dodge Caliber. It's quite peppy. I miss
it to his brother's house about thirty miles away, and
he was then later found dead from a self inflicted
gunshot wound to the head. His brother wasn't home, Okay,

(15:25):
that was my question. No, his brother wasn't home at
the time. So Bruce had purchased an Air Canada flight
from la to Illinois, and he had like an old
high school friend living there. And it's not really known
if he intended to go or not. He'd visited the
friend a couple months before. They think that he might
have had that as an escape plan. I guess it's

(15:45):
definitely it was planned out. But he also suffered third
degree burns on his arms or made flamethrower right, Okay,
this is where he went wrong? Was Yeah, Well, it's
not the only way he went wrong, but like, again,
don't make a flamethrower. No, and that because of that,
it changed his plans.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
So because he couldn't travel with the burns, or because
he was going to get found out because of the burns,
or maybe both.

Speaker 1 (16:11):
I'm going to imagine it was just I mean, their
third degree burns. That's down to the soft tissue. So
if your arms are essentially you know, meat loaf, I
don't think he can travel. I don't know.

Speaker 2 (16:25):
He said that in a very funny way. I just
don't think that you can travel with.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
I just don't think you can.

Speaker 3 (16:30):
No.

Speaker 1 (16:31):
I agree. It must have been in a lot of pain,
a lot of pain and also kind of stand out.
But there was like seventeen grand in cash plaster wrapped
his legs. Okay, yeah, And he had booby trapped his car.
It was a rental car actually, and he booby trapped
it with explosives so that when they went to go
into it, like it would explode. I think he did
initially plan to escape, Like that's what I took from it. Yeah,

(16:55):
I have so many questions, but I think you're right.
I think he did plan to escape, and then I
threw our backfired on him literally. Yeah, they also took
more handguns. There were four, like thirteen round handguns and
two hundred rounds of ammunition were found in the home. Okay,

(17:16):
So overall, three victims died from gunshot wounds, four others
died from like a combination of gunshot wounds in the fire,
and two others died just from the fire that they
burned to death. He ended up killing his ex wife,
her mother, her father, two of her brothers, two of
her sisters in law, and one of her nephews. So

(17:37):
definitely he was targeted, per one hundred percent. So the motive,
they're pretty sure what the motive is. The settlement of
his divorce from Sylvia Pardo, who was the name of
the victim of the first victim. I guess his ex
wife the week prior. He had absolutely no I mean,
he had no criminal record, no history of violence at all. Right,

(17:59):
he wasn't known as violent person, but it just pushed
him right over the fucking edge. So they got married
in two thousand and six, but grew apart when Bruce
refused to open a joint account with Sylvia and maze
her use her own money to lack after her three
children oh yeah, I mean it was kind of a
dick move, like his children as well, or no, these
were her children, okay, but he was like, I'm not

(18:20):
paying for anything to do with your kids. I mean,
if you're marrying. Yeah, that's a shy. Bruce also had
hidden a child from a previous relationship from her, and yeah,
I don't know why he did that, but she found
out about it, and that's kind of when they started
like drifting apart. Hu. And then in June two thousand
and eight, Bruce was ordered to pay Sylvia almost two

(18:42):
grand a month in spousal support. Oh and the next month,
he was fired from his job for billing false hours.
So obviously he was billing false hours trying to make
up money to pay wouldn't be out of a polka. Yeah,
and then he also had to pair like a lump
sum of ten grand in the divorce. So I think, like,
just not that it's next used, Like it's absolutely not.

(19:02):
The guy went fucking mental, But I think it was
just more than he could handle. There was a lot
of triggers there for him. Yeah, I mean, he doesn't
sound like he was the best person to begin with,
but yeah, I think that's what pushed him to do that. Yeah,
it takes a certain type of person to kill someone
dressed as Santa. I know, it's really dark. He just
really traumatized me. You could have done literally everything without

(19:26):
that outfit on m And you know what, I wonder.
You know those Santa suits they are made of polyester
and shite. I wonder if that is what injured him
in the end. Yeah. Probably, I mean probably immediately caught
fire and then melted onto it. So really Santa killed him. Yep,
dressing a Santa killed him, So that's kind of good karma.

(19:47):
I guess do you think he dressed the Santa because
what other reason would he have had to have dressed
a Santa other than to hide who he really was,
I don't know, or just because he was a sex fuck.
I think I think it was. I think it was
like he was that pissed off that he's like, you
know what, I'm going to do this at Christmas and

(20:08):
I'm going to well kill you all and I'm going
to do this dress to Santa because I don't think
I don't think he intend for anyone to live through that,
like the rest of them, like the other twenty odd kids,
because he was shooting them. The people that died were
all family. But I genuinely think like he was not
trying to save anybody. I think he was trying to
kill everybody, okay and people, there's just too many, and

(20:30):
he focused on the people he wanted to get. Yeah, yeah,
I was pretty second twisted. That is a really twisted story.
It's a dark Christmas Day. I enjoyed it. Are you packing? Then?
I'm not picking yours. I knew you didn't pick my.
I can't. I don't want to be strangled. I don't
want to burn to out either. It's like a raging

(20:51):
fireball of a house. I know. And you know, like
I thought of being killed by Santa. It's probably a
really shit way to go. But but if you get
shot in the head, you don't have to feel it
for long. This is you just like you're taking the
best case scenarios. I am taking the best case scenario

(21:12):
because the worst case is I get killed by Santa
with a flame thrower, and I don't want to think
about that.

Speaker 2 (21:18):
My worst case for yours would be that I got
shot and like the stomach, oh, and I was still alive,
and then I died from flames.

Speaker 1 (21:27):
Oh, that would be the worst. And Santa and Santa
also in that mix, I know, But then strangulation, All right,
who are you going with? I might change my mind?
Who are you going with? My guy? You're going with strangulation? Yes,
because there wasn't the mass panic around them. Oh, Clil

(21:47):
freaking me out here, God damn it, fucking cat clear cil. Oh,
she stopped such a dick, and yeah, strangulation doesn't bother me,
you know, oh she I mean it's awful.

Speaker 2 (22:02):
It's awful, like she obviously would have been very scared.
It would have been a horrible way to go. Yeah,
but you know, a couple of minutes and then you
sort of pass out.

Speaker 1 (22:11):
I know, I think I might be changing my mind
compared to worst case scenario lying in a burning room,
hadn't been shot, and Santa's claimed throwing you and then
also on fire, Santa's also on fire. Santa's on fire. Yeah,
I mean that's quite horrific too, like Santa's melting onto
his arms. Yep, yeah, I'm switching's switching, I'm switching. I

(22:33):
didn't think that's through properly. Did just hear strangulation? Strangulation?
I panic you go to the opposite. But I mean,
she wasn't. It was obviously a horrible way to go,
but she wasn't tortured per se, you know, like she
wasn't she wasn't sexually assaulted. She wasn't tortured, She wasn't
cut up or anything. She was strangled. And I kind

(22:53):
of believe his story that he tried something and it
didn't go well and he killed her. Yeah, he panicked
and killed her, And I believe that given you the
evidence from body, so I don't think that she would
have suffered for long. So yeah, I'm switching, even though
it's like the worst case for me is strangulation killer

(23:14):
Santa is probably not the best option.

Speaker 2 (23:17):
No, No, I think that he probably didn't intend to
kill her, but when he was making our be quiet,
because he'd watched the violent pornography, right and had that
sort of fetish with like choking women, he thought, well,
this is an opportunity and just sort of you.

Speaker 1 (23:38):
Got led away with it. Do you think it was
sexually motivated anger or panic? I think initially panic, yeah,
and then went into sexually motivated Okay, so they probably
got off off of that, yeah, but didn't do anything

(24:00):
to her because obviously, like maybe it wasn't a necrophilia
type situation after death, it didn't do anything for him. Yeah, yeah,
I kind of. I think I agree, Like I think
he panicked and was trying to shut her up and
then thought, oh, this is fun, and then I thought,
oh it's not fun anymore. Yep.

Speaker 2 (24:17):
Yeah, but obviously under exaggerated what they extend it was
that he said, because he said he only strangled her
or held his hands over her mouth for twenty seconds.

Speaker 1 (24:28):
And she died, which doesn't work poss biologically. So no,
was it like three four minutes that you can go
without oxygen to the brain? Yeah? Yeah, So we'll part here.

Speaker 3 (24:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (24:42):
No, there's no way I wouldn't have killed her. No, No,
I wouldn't. I don't think you'd even pass out with that. Yeah.
Can I just say? Okay, So I got Gemma's like
another squeezy toy to keep her busy, and she's got
one in each hand. Now I have a penguin in
one hand and a dog from poor Patrol in another hand,

(25:03):
and she still managing to fidget and kicking things. I'm
going to have to get you one for your feet
as well, I got to get your bunny slippers and
pat your feet out. I will find a way to
move something something. I'm thoroughly enjoying myself. It's really therapeutic.
I recommend her.

Speaker 3 (25:23):
Is that.

Speaker 2 (25:23):
Yeah, I'm so happy with my Christmas present.

Speaker 1 (25:30):
Well, I think that's it for this week. Yes, thank
you guys for listening. Yeah, we reached over six thousand
listeners last week, so that was exciting. Thank you for
that little milestone. Everyone, it's great.

Speaker 2 (25:44):
Thank you very much for sticking with us, or if
you've just found us, and thank you very much for
joining us.
