Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hello, and welcome to Women's World on Radio I. As
a reminder, Radio I as a reading service intended for
people who are blind or have other disabilities that make
it difficult to read printed material. Today I will be
reading from Better Homes and Gardens magazine dated June twenty
twenty five, and other publications as time allows. Your host

(00:23):
today is Rosemary. Newspaper and magazine articles presented in Women's
World or for general information only. RADIOI does not enduse
or recommend any of the subjects mentioned. We start with
an article entitled look be a Painted Lady. To achieve

(00:44):
a brilliant British charm for their Victorian in upstate New York,
this family called on London designer Sarah Brown to import
a riot of color and pattern, with results as transfer
fixing as a Coltswold cottage. When an equestrian family scooped

(01:08):
up this eighteen eighty six painted Lady Victorian in Sarasota Springs,
New York, a horse racing town, they wanted to design
it in a style that was established winner the patterned,
colorful interiors often found in Great Britain. In a lively

(01:28):
town with rich history, we knew we could have fun
and take some risks. Homeowner Catherine Sharp says she and
her husband, Justin Nicholson, hired London designer Sarah Brown to assist.
We asked Sarah and her team to design a home
with bold, inviting colors, with a very British mix of

(01:52):
antiques and layered fabrics. Catherine says the layering is key
to the esthetic. Brown says, to it from looking designed
that homie feeling was liking. When they first got their
hands on the place, all the walls were pale gray.
I mean there was no color ended at all. Brown

(02:15):
recalls we got rid of the gray quite swiftly. While
colors in English homes can lean a little muddy and undertone,
here Brown went for happier hues that suit the summer season,
with all paved colors from the historically inspired British brand

(02:35):
Pharaoh and Balm. Brown signature is the mix of patterns.
We steer away from being too matchy, she says. We
tried to bring in different types of patterns, a stripe,
a small floral, a bigger floral, a plane. We almost

(02:56):
tick off here. We have covered the types of print
that when you put them all together, creates a really
nice balance, but there are methods of creating cohesion. The
addition of pinks and reds throughout the home is one

(03:19):
way she created visual repetition, the trick to achieving Brown's
been here Forever sensibility. Sometimes it's good to have something
a bent off that you wouldn't necessarily choose because it's
good in the mix, rather than looking like we've gone
and bought everything, Brown says. The most personal design feature

(03:43):
is also the most unexpected. Halfway through the project, Catherine
brought up a vision she'd been having of a mural wall.
She said, I can't get it out of my head.
I want to have this mural and I wanted to
have the kids and the dogs in it. Brown's recalls

(04:05):
they customized a hand painted American folk wallpaper tailored to
her fever dream. The landmarks are personal and important, the
Saratoga bandstand, their kids walking hand in hand, and their
two little puppies. The look is a sentimental winner in

(04:29):
any country. The mural is visible from nearly every room
on the main level. We love how it echoes the
surrounding Adirondack Mountains, says homeowner Catherine Sharp. And now there
are six points to the design of this house. Number

(04:51):
one a new History. The painting above the pink sofa
depicts the Saratoga Racecourse, which has been opened since eighteen
sixty three. Its rite of color provides connection for the
palette and all of the patterns in the house. Number
two a graphic touch. In the dining room, twelve Japanese

(05:16):
botanicals hang in a grid, act as one piece of
art while speaking to the other hues in the room.
The shirt lamp shades supply additional texture and other warm
pattern against the grass cloth walls. Number three soften up

(05:38):
a flouncy skirt around the pedestal sink. A Roman shade
on the window and fabric lamp shades on the sconces
bring feminine touches to a bath with a lot of
wood detailing. Number four a pop of pink. A vibrant

(05:58):
lamb cast a place for light. In the game room.
Behind the curtains, a sheer layer provides privacy and light
flow at once. Number five clever cooking. The kitchen floor
plan was sensible and it functioned well, but the room
needed a color upgrade. Brown shows Pharaoh and Ball borrowed light.

(06:25):
The few tweaks they did make, including a new table
the homeowner bought and a hanging. A print with a
nod to Food and Drink by Sussex, England based artist
Kate Boxer changed the whole feel of the kitchen, Brown says,
and number six playing dress up. Catherine dresses up for

(06:49):
the races. It's part of the fun, Brown says. And
she has loads of hats and boxes, and I said,
why don't we just put them all up? Next? Sweet Sour, Salty, Spicy.
Give your favorite pool side pairings and upgrade. These reinvented

(18:33):
the know news and notes to boost your well being.
Two or more servings of yogurt each week could help
lower your risk of certain type of colon cancer. Scientists
found that people who ate that amount were twenty percent
less likely to develop colon tumors that test positive for

(18:55):
a type of bacteria. Try this. Find time to play.
Taking a light hearted approach to life can boost your
mental health and resiliency. Researchers tracked more than five hundred
people during the pandemic, and as you might suspect, those

(19:16):
who had a more playful attitude felt less stressed and
were also more active. Set aside at least ten minutes
of playfulness in your day. Need a little nudge, Try
an app like Just Dance or turn chores into games
with choorful dot app. Fast is an acronym that could

(19:41):
save your life or a loved one's life. Each letter
stands for a check that can identify of someone as
having a stroke. Face smile, If your mouth droops or
is uneven, that's a sign. Arm raise both arms and

(20:03):
if one is weak or nune. That is a red flag.
Speech slurred, confusing, or hard to understand speech is a symptom.
Time call nine one one right away. If you see
any of these signs, the sooner you get treatment, the

(20:25):
better the outcome. Seventy eight percent of adults drink less
than eight cups of water daily. A new review published
in the journal Urology shows the drinking more water about
two cups before each meal can boost weight loss by
forty four to one hundred percent. It also reduces the

(20:49):
risk of other health issues, including kidney stones, urinary tract infections,
and migraines. Experts say that in general, women need eleven
and one half cups of fluid daily and men need
fifteen and one half cups, but that depends on such
factors such as weight and physical activity. Check the color

(21:14):
of your urine, which should be a light yellow. Anything
darker means you need to drink A National Sunglasses Day
is June the twenty seventh. Here's your reminder to wear
those chades to shield your eyes from UV rays. This
helps protect against damage that can lead to conditions that

(21:38):
may harm your visions, such as glaucoma. When shopping for sunglasses.
Don't rely on the color, finish or price. Look for
a label that says one hundred percent UVA and UVB protection.
Larger wraparound styles also meant the amount of UV rays

(22:02):
entering from the sides one thousand, three hundred and fifty
two dollars. That's how much more money optimistic people have
saved compared to those with less hopeful outlooks. Even if
you're not the upbeat type, you can start saving gradually

(22:22):
with an app like Acorns. Link your debut or credit
card to your account, and the app rounds up the
price of your purchases and saves and invests the extra.
Next house rules Courtney Cox. Even on her career successes,

(22:45):
actor Courtney Cox could do anything she darned while pleases.
So what's on her vision board laundry? We all fell
in love with her homekeeping skills as the super organized
need and Monica Geller on Friends. It turns out the
woman behind the iconic character is just as enthusiastic about

(23:08):
her own home. Three years ago, she founded home Court,
a home and body fragrance company, to make products that
smell good, like really good, and by doing so, she
elevated chores to an expression of self care, one sprints

(23:28):
at a time. We met up to talk about her
new line of laundry fragrances. Displayworthy esthetics matter to Courtney,
and the laundry room is no different. I never want
to see a big plastic jug, she says. Home Court's

(23:49):
signature dark glass bottles look pretty on a shelf, so
you'll want to keep cleaning products out in the open.
Even wool laundry grouped in a shallow dish add beauty.
Courtney finds inspiration all around her. The woman who dyes

(24:09):
my hair uses a bomb that smells like a real rose,
which inspired us to use upcycled rosewater, she says of
her steeped rose scent. The fragrance is cozy and romantic.
Whether she's lighting a balsam candle or painting her rooms

(24:30):
and earthy shade, Courtney is all about creating a warm
and inviting home. I'm into natural tones, whether they are
dark or light, she says. To get ready for company,
she cleans the counters and freshens the upholstery with linen spray,
and when she needs a little kick to get started,

(24:52):
she pours herself a glass of ice aerbo motte Te

A weekend express, simple comforts and low maintenance landscaping let
one family maximize every minute of their small beach house backyard.

Maximum relaxation, minimal upkeep that gold rove every choice landscape

Cushions for the outdoor furniture. No one wants to wrestle
them in and out of storage. Bold flowers too much,

(25:40):
deadheading plants in various shades of green can bring color
and texture Instead, an expansive outdoor kitchen pass again, honestly,
pretty much just a grill will do. The homeowners, Lindsay
and Scott Muroe and their adult children, wanted it to
be easy. They wanted to live with the doors open.

(26:03):
They wanted to live outside. They also wanted it to
be plain, livable, which it decidedly wasn't when they bought
the place. It was an expanse of weeds, cracked walkways,
and bare dirt. Working within the family somewhat limited budget
would transform the yard with a mix of affordable materials

(26:27):
plus a few splurges. You need that mix of gucci
and gap she chose she jokes here, she says. The
goucy is that would for the decking and outdoor shower.
The gap is the poured concrete pavers and pea gravel groundcover.
For all its affordability. The gravel feels like a European beach,

(26:51):
she says. It creates a vibe. It's very tactile. It
really feels good under your feet. With every green interest
from foxtel ferns, blue chalksticks, agave and small bay trees,
the yard feels like a lush, relaxing escape from the
moment the sun comes up to the time when the

(27:13):
stars come out, to which point the lanterns and the
towering rubber tree flicker on automatically. Of course, Wood considers
the sprawling rubber tree, which she estimates is at least
eighty years old, the star of the garden. She played

(27:36):
it up by hanging a swing and installing a few
serena and lily woven lanterns. This concludes Women's World for today.
