(00:01):
Hi, everybody. This is Chandlerand this is Chris. Hey, this
is Isaac. You're listening to exCreates the podcast. Guys, we are
so excited for our one hundred andtwenty fourth episode to be featuring the incredible
(00:26):
Isaac Robinson Smith, the voice ofBishop from X Men ninety seven. Welcome
Isaac, Thank you guys. Thisis so cool. I'm so excited to
go through the comics. Oh,yes, because you are a comic book
fan. I am a huge comicbook fan. Yes, yes, i
am. What was your first introductioninto the world of the X Men?
Was it the comic books? Itwas on It was the show in the
(00:47):
nineties as much as I can remember, being a baby born in nineteen eighty
nine, and then it was moreso of the movies, the live action
movies, and then kind of backto the animated series and then some of
the comics and then this show.So it's sort of been like a but
woven through that, like Spider Man'swhy I Real jump into Marvel with the
two thousand and two Toby Maguire film, so like that jump started everything all
(01:08):
of my love for comics in Marvel. But my X Men is journey has
sort of been like weaving in andout and then now of course being centralized
in the New ninety seven show.Yes, I love what a nerd you
are, because we're nerds too. We're not saying that in a negative context.
Oh no, no, no,I take it in the best way
possible. Yeah, I mean yousee my setup, like all this stuff,
like, I love it all.I love your post. Was it
(01:30):
today of you as doc oc?It was toreadable, it was well,
that was an accomplishment that luck.Thank you. Yeah. That was my
first year of high school. Thatwas the first Halloween that I had at
that school, and it was aperforming arts high school, so it was
sort of we sort of had carteblanche to be as creative as we wanted
at that school. And so Iwas like, I'm going to do it.
(01:51):
I love this movie and I wantto see if I can build this
thing. So I'm wearing like aPVC backpack that I built with the trench
coat over it, and like Igot into classrooms by moving very slowly sideways
into semicircle and then taking it offand sitting down and then I would like
haul that thing around. It wasreally cool. It was. It was
such a memorable. I was like, this is great that I just get
to be this nerdy and nobody caresand everybody like embraces it. So I
(02:13):
was very lucky to have that experiencein high school. Well, I love
that you're so into costuming because youactually dressed as Bishop to the premiere of
X Men ninety seven that we wereall at together. So that was so
fun that you are so committed tocharacter that you had to address as him
at the premiere, which is sofun. Thank you. Yeah, I'm
glad that people liked it. Itwas it was a jump. I was
(02:36):
like should I do it? AndI was like, might as well?
I mean this thing is this meanstoo much to not and the fans were
like all the looks that they had. I was like, this is so
far beyond what I can do forcostuming for myself. I just loved what
everybody was wearing and how enthusiastic everybodywas, so I was like, oh,
no, I can relax, Ican just fit in. This is
so great. Yeah, yeah,it was. It was an awesome experience.
Yeah, I'm so glad that wewere all there to share that moment.
(03:00):
I too, yeah. Yeah, you guys have been so great,
just like shepherding this awesome experience forthe cast. So thank you for having
us on and getting us these timestogether and the you know, all the
experiences we've had so far. Ican't wait for more. So it's been
great. Was the premiere the firsttime that you met the cast in person?
It was, Yeah, that wasthe very first time there. I
had met aj years ago because wewere both on the show called Voltron Legendary
(03:23):
Defender. I played a small rolein a couple episodes, and so he
was in that for you know,a major role in that. But that
was the only person that I reallyactually knew. Everybody else I sort of
knew through the Internet or past rolesthat they had done or photos from the
release of the cast when that wasofficial, but I'd never met these people
in person. So that was areally cool. It was like, I
(03:44):
know, this is like an old, tired phrase, but it was definitely
first day of school vibes with everybodyat the premiere. It was so awesome.
Yeah, since you watched the cartoonback in the day, what was
it like meeting the legacy actors? That was a little bit overwhelming. To
me at the first person I metin the theater with nobody else around was
Cal Dodd. He was the firstone that I met from the Legacy cast,
and he was so kind to meand introduced himself and it was like,
(04:05):
hey, I'm Cal, and youknow, talk to him and the
Lee Waalds were there and everything, and he remembered a scene that he had
with Philip Aikens Bishop back in thenineties show and he like was laughing about
how fun that was. And sothat was like my introduction to how great
all these people are. Because shortlyafter that I met Leonore and her magic
(04:25):
is just, you know, legendary. Any room she walks into, she's
just amazing. I didn't meet herdirectly because she wasn't there, but Allison
Seely Smith I contacted on Instagram justto say, hey, I love your
work and I'm so happy to be, you know, a coworker of yours,
and she was so sweet. Ihope I get to meet her at
some point for real. And thenyeah, everybody else was sort of funneled
in and was sort of mixed togetherafter that, so it wasn't a lot
(04:46):
of one on one I think thebiggest meeting of all of us. That
was so such a whiplash experience wasthe photo we all took together with the
legacy cast and the new cast infront of the El Capitan. I just
sort of floated through that night andnot a lot of details sat up,
but it was great. I meanthat. Plus having my mom and my
brother and one of my best friendsthere with me was such a cool night.
So but yeah, meeting everybody hasbeen such a joy every step of
(05:10):
the way. So I'm really happyto be part of this group. Amazing.
How does it feel to be anX man? Growing up loving them
and then now you get to beone? I got I just have to
know, like, how does itfeel. I still haven't accepted it yet.
Funny enough, you know, I'vebeen working on the show for over
two years and I still don't reallyfeel like it's happened. I mean,
I know it has, but likeI'm sort of What's interesting is I recorded
(05:31):
it so long ago that a lotof the stuff that's happened now I either
wasn't part of or don't even remember, and so seeing it it's fresh for
the first time to me because allthe stuff that's coming out, I hadn't
seen in its full version yet,but it just feels I think people have
asked this, and I think theonly word that I can say is grateful.
I think gratitude is the only placeI can go, because that's all
I really have is just thankful, being thankful and being grateful to be part
(05:54):
of something that's this impactful. Andthen from a very personal standpoint, being
one of the only black X Mencharacters on the show means a lot in
a whole other dimension that I didn'teven know how important that was until kind
of recently, and I was like, oh no, this is important to
represent this character. So there's alot of stuff going on at the same
time, but mostly it's gratitude,I would say, And I know that's
(06:16):
kind of a lame answer, butthat's genuinely how I feel about it.
Well, that's a good feeling. And how badass was it that us,
you and Storm were the first XMen to appear in the show. I
was so excited. That was wild. I was like, oh, I
forgot about this part. Oh yeah. I didn't even have time to really
react when I was watching it,but it was so awesome and it just
(06:38):
all the artists and the team andthe directors and everybody made us look so
good and sound so good, andthe whole stories and the writers, everybody
has been such an amazing I justfeel privileged to be a piece of the
whole thing. So it's great. It's great. So when you got the
worle, how did you celebrate?Very quietly? I think I said this
at wonder Con, but I wasin a session for another project, a
(07:03):
video game, and that's when Igot the email from it. I didn't
know what it was at first, because I just, you know, all
of us voice actors, we gothrough a bunch of auditions and emails and
correspondence with all these things, andsometimes they just kind of become not that
we forget or that they're less important, but it's sort of a wash of
information almost, And especially in themiddle of a four hour session for a
video game, which is already vocallyand emotionally taxing, to get this email
(07:26):
that said they want to offer youthe role of this in Uh it wasn't
called x Men at the time.It was some other name that they given
it, some fake title to likekind of shrouded in secrecy, but we
all knew what it was those ofus that were part of it, and
I just kind of had to sitand let the adrenaline rush through me and
kind of escape out and then refocusbecause I had like three hundred more lines
to record for this thing, thisgame that was working on, So I
(07:50):
privately celebrated with myself, and thenas things went along and I started to
meet the cast and know who thepeople were that were involved, I got
to celebrate with them and they,Yeah, first initial thing was just me
on my own, but it wasreally exciting. It was a great moment,
and I'll never forget standing there andseeing that it had happened and not
really knowing what it was going tolead to, because I thought, this
is amazing. I have no ideahow much I'm going to be involved,
(08:13):
but I'm excited to be part ofit. And then to know that Bishop's
story is so much more like fleshedout and he has much more involvement than
he did in the original was areally cool gift that I didn't expect.
So I've been having a great timewith that. So I continue to celebrate
how it goes on and it's notreally over yet. Last time we saw
you, we were all at wonderCon, and we did this amazing panel
(08:33):
that Chris and I have been hostingfor years called the X Men Fandom Panel,
and we did this really special gatheringof you in the cast, which
was a first for us because normallywe have a smattering of different types of
fandoms across the comics, across toys, across the cartoon, but this one
was all dedicated X Men ninety sevenbecause it was so new and the energy
in that room was insane. Yeah, the people at wonder Con, and
(08:58):
I just love how that energy hascontinued on social media and beyond and these
weekly screening events that we've been hosting. Chris has been there doing these incredible
things. I know you're going tobe appearing at one very soon. Yes,
in literally like two and a halfhours, over two hours, so
yeah, it's an X Men filday, which I'm happy about. Awesome.
(09:20):
Yeah, what's it like meeting thefans? That's been the best part
I think out of all of this. You know, aside from close friends
of mine that are involved in celebratingme and celebrating the show. The whole
reason I do this career is forthat sort of impact. One of the
goals that I had when I wasstarting this job of doing voiceovers. I
said, if I can create orhelp create a character that kids are imitating
(09:45):
online, somewhere or just in theirown lives, I feel like I've done
my job, because that's what Igrew up doing, is just imitations.
But I saw a very direct resultof what this show means to people at
wond er Con. Like maybe threehours before our panel, I was hanging
out with Holly Chow. We weregetting literally the only food we could,
which is like, you know, the hot dog and Chip's option at the
stand or whatever, you know, the fast food thing. And I had
(10:07):
to actually leave in the middle ofthat three hour period to go teach a
two hour voiceover class to a studiothat I work with, so I did
a virtual class from my hotel room. Anyway, before that, Holly and
I were hanging out and we werejust talking about the show and what it
meant and the future of it andwhat it means to us and how we're
absorbing everything that's going on. Andthere was this father and son at the
(10:28):
other side of this big brown tablebecause everybody was sharing seats because there was
nowhere to sit and so we wereall, like, you know, hanging
out with people that just happened tobe there, and it was a dad
dressed as Deadpool and his little fiveyear old son dressed as Wolverine, and
he heard us talking about it andhe leaned over and he's like, I'm
so sorry, I just I overheardyou guys talking. Are you Are you
guys in the show? Are youan X Men ninety seven? It's like,
(10:50):
yeah, we're It's like I thoughtI recognized you. I saw like
your picture or something like that, and I thought that was you. And
he said, I just want tolet you know how amazing this has been
and how great the show is.I watched the show with my son and
we're both loving it, and weboth really enjoy that I can share this
with him just like I enjoy youknow, he enjoyed the original show and
how he's sharing it with his son. And so that was such a cool
(11:11):
example of how global the impact ofthese stories are and every fan experience,
even if it's a few seconds oryou know, a longer one like that,
is just as meaningful to me.And so I've learned a lot and
I've grown a lot, and Ifeel like I understand more of why it
is that we're doing it because ofmoments like that. So meeting the fans
has been just the coolest thing, and I can't wait to meet more of
(11:35):
them, you know, doing acouple events a little bit and excited to
see more people. Yeah, what'syour what's been your favorite episode that's aired
so far? Oh? Man,I mean episode five is probably the It's
it's the Leader, I think fora reason. Just I love well.
I love what it did. Iloved the performances were all stellar. I
love that my friends doing it.The art is phenomenal, the music,
(11:58):
the score, the Newton brothers doingI I'm a huge fan of film scores,
so the Newton Brothers are killing inevery episode. But I love even
more so that the episode took achance on going somewhere so dramatic and so
dark and didn't really sidestep it justbecause it's X Men and it's an animated
show like the I think what itwas proclaiming is, yes, this is
(12:18):
animation, but it's also an artform that we can take to a very
high degree and have an influential emotionalimpact on a lot of people in a
way that's surprising and still surprising.I mean Bo said that this is just
a warm up for what's to come. I don't know what that means,
but I'm really excited for that. But I also love in particular the response
that Ba Demio, the creator youknow, had about the episode and saying
(12:41):
how this is a reflective of justjust that he had the wherewithal to have
something as huge to say as it'sa thematically reflective of what millennials went through
during nine to eleven. And that'swhat we were trying to do with this
show, is give such an impactthrough this storytelling. I was like,
man, this is just this isthe apex of how it can be done.
(13:03):
And so h I loved that episodeso much, and I'm excited for
more. You know, obviously theones that you know, Bishop is in,
I love the I you know, that's another category because I was involved
in those and loved seeing the characterand being with everybody. But man,
that was good. I just itwas so much fun. Not fun.
It was sad. It was sosad, but you know, it was
great to watch. Great art itwas. It was great art it was,
(13:24):
and it was emotionally impactful and thecollective grief of everybody online was palpable,
like it was. It was insaneto go through that emotional rollercoaster with
everybody. And I was traveling abroadat the time, and I knew that
this episode was going to be abig episode, and so I had to
(13:46):
find ways so I could watch myDisney Plus account from another foreign country that
I could see it in time witheverybody, and I did because I was
so far ahead of everyone, Iactually saw it, you know, just
like normal daytime when everyone else issleeping, so I got to see it
really early, and it was.It was an incredible episode. I will
(14:07):
say, actually watch that episode threetimes and I cried each and every single
time. It was Yeah, Iloved it. Yeah, I mean,
how can you not you the lastline especially, I won't spoil for anybody
that hasn't seen it listening to this, but yeah, it's it's it's real
good. It's it's really good.Yeah. I was weepy. I was
weepy. And I honestly I getmore emotional listening to people talk about that
(14:31):
episode than when I was actually watchingthe episode, which was very impactful for
me, but like hearing people's emotionalresponse to it through listening to other podcasts
or hearing people on social media orwatching their videos. It's like they they
are just so destroyed, but they'renot upset. They're like, right,
they feel the connection to these charactersand these stories on such a deep level.
(14:54):
And next bety seven is accomplishing thison such a high quality level that
it's incredible just that it's all happeningright now. Like just to be a
fan of the original ninety two seriesand now it being back and having it
be so good and better than Icould have ever expected, is like incredible.
Oh yeah, it's just it's acommunal experience. I love it.
(15:16):
Let's get into the issue, youguys. I want to learn all about
the first appearance of our time travelingmutant superhero Bishop. Mm hmmm sounds good
to me. Yes, all right, Well, so we are doing on
Kenney expand to eighty three, andfor those of you that are going to
come at us online, we knowthat to eighty two is the first appearance
of Bishop, but he only comesin on the last page. So we're
(15:39):
not going to have the Bishop ofour x Men and eighty seven world be
on a show and talk about acomic where he doesn't appear until the last
page. So yeah, we're doingtwo eighty three, which is his first
full appearance. We get him talkingand doing stuff and all sorts of stuff,
so it's gonna be awesome. Yes, the issue is called Bishop's Crossing,
and this is not just so youknow, is wild game Master and
(16:02):
Selene watched their machinations unfold from afar, the X Men try to discover the
truth about the mutant called Bishop. It's written by John Byrne art By.
I'm gonna say Wilt Wilt's portaccio.I'm so sorry. Well wiltcha, Well,
I don't know, do you know? Do you know? I don't
(16:23):
don't I know. He's the creatorof Bishop, and I feel horrible that
he's got one of those names thatwe can't do. We you know,
we butchered billson Kevich's name forever untilwe learn how to say it right.
So Wilts, get on socials andtell us how to say your name.
Yeah. This was such an interestingera of comics because it was at this
(16:45):
time where Claremont was gone exited ratherand they were doing this interesting thing where
the artists where the storytellers. Soeven though it says written by John Burn.
John Byrne just did like the textof what they're saying. But Wilts
is the one that actually came upwith the plot and and all that sort
(17:07):
of stuff. So it's pretty fascinatingto see how they did at that time.
Well, speaking of time, let'sset the era. When this was
published. It was December one ofnineteen ninety one, and back then,
the top song was Black or Whiteby Michael Jackson. Do you remember this
song? I have any memories ofit. I don't have memories of it,
but I love that song. Yeah, he was two years old.
(17:30):
Yeah, it was probably it wasin the ether somewhere, so it was
in my brain at some point. But yeah, of course like that.
Yeah. The top movie was thatAdams Family A Classic, the original,
the first one. Yeah, yeah, that's awesome, so good came out,
Yeah, thing Lurches, Uncle Fester, It's all good, so good,
(17:53):
and like Wednesday Adams, what awhat a hot star right now?
I know? Yeah, yeah,I show that up. I only watched
a little bit of I got tocatch up on that. I still because
I know they're I think they're doinga season two. They are, they
are. Yeah, we have ourOh sorry, I was totally going to
say they've got a new movie comingout that's Beetlejuice. I'm oh, yes,
I'm way off. It's in theworld, though, I get it.
(18:14):
Yeah, no, I say whereyour brain was at? Yeah?
Yeah, I think it. Justcast Sandy Newton from West World in the
new season of Wednesday. Love Her, Love Her? Yeah I loved so
good. Yeah me too. Whatis the name that she wants to go
by now? Because she says she'sreclaiming her African name. She doesn't want
to go by Sandy anymore, soI feel like we should we should go
(18:36):
by her wishes, and I'm socurious. Now, oh fan d Way,
then d Way rather than Sandy. It's okay then d Way Way nice.
I appreciate her, and and I'mall about going with using her African
name if that's what she wants tobe called now, I respect it.
Yeah cool, right, Well, yeah, let's dive into this. This
(19:03):
is the cover, which is gorgeous. You know, we've got Storm versus
Bishop, and we've got the amazingpower effects bursting out of their hands.
Storm is looking very accusatory at Bishop. She's got a finger pointed at him.
Yes, there is already drama. And she, just so you all
know, was wearing her classic whiteoutfit from the nineties that we all know
(19:25):
and love. M hmmm, yes, and Bishop's back has turned to us.
He's looking like his classic nineties selffirst appearance look and yeah, some
confrontation is about to go down.So we open the page and on the
very first inside cover we have ourvery first add It's the Smash TV video
(19:47):
game ad. Oh, the coinop of the year is now the most
action packed to any this game ofall time. Congratulations, you're the next
lucky contestant on the game show withthe ultimate prize is your life. Sorry,
no mindless below on spinning wheels. Here just deadly action, flying sharpnel
and total carnage, all in frontof a live studio audience. Instead of
picking valves, you pick six futuristicweapons like triple photon lasers and lethal plasma
(20:11):
grenades, and the two controller actiongives you three sixty arcade firepowers after you
defeat hordes of cyborg mutants, powerorbs, and the thirty ton mutoid Man.
Any wonder this show's number one inthe ratings. Okay, so I
remember this game. I love howwe get we're all about mutants and we
get to fight cyborg mutants and utoidman. But I totally remember this game
(20:33):
at the Arcade. I don't knowif you guys remember this game at the
arca. I don't remember this. No, this is fun and new to
see. I scored. Yeah,I love this game. It was like
a top down aerial game and youwere these guys and you basically, like
they said, you just use differentweapons to shoot at people. And I
think it was where there was notrigger button they had to push it.
They were just were constantly firing,so you just had to position them to
(20:57):
make sure that they fired at theright baddiest And then yeah, I just
got bigger and better. What isthis double fisted action? I just realized,
Oh yeah, because you had twocontroller controllers. Yeah that's right.
Yeah yeah yeah. Oh man,I love this. This the retro stuff
is great. I really love this. Oh yeah, Christy Round. Do
(21:18):
you know this game at all?I don't, but I have. I'm
having flashbacks to my childhood seeing thisand thinking it was American Gladiators, and
now that they see it as anadult, it totally isn't. But you
know, I want to be thembecause look how how much money is at
their feet. They were just youknow, going through all that money down
there. I love that. Iwant to. Oh and it's a Nintendo
(21:38):
game which is very motendo. Ohyeah on brand. Yeah, Okay,
let's get into this story. Thesetwo guys that are battling all of these
so it's so hard to describe. What I find interesting about these characters is
like I thought that they just allrate it Bishop's closet and that was like
(22:00):
the totally hot look in the future. But no, they're actually a part
of Xavier's Special Enforcer group. Theirnames are Malcolm and Randall, and they
are the buds that pop through thetime portal with Bishop at the end of
two eighty two. And yeah, these guys are like friends for life.
They joined this Xavier Security Enforcer squadtogether because they wanted to uphold the Mutant
(22:25):
dream in the future, and theyare battling these enemies called Lifers, which
are all supporters of Trevor Fitzroy, who is the enemy of the Hour at
the moment in I'm Canny x Mencomics, and they're just so bad ass.
I love them. I think they'reso cool, so they take out
these goons, they corner in onTrevor Fitzroy and Bishop has him by the
(22:49):
neck, basically holding him because theyhave come to collect him. This is
the younger version of himself, ofcourse, because they're from the future,
so they know the older Fitzroy whohas to you know, be a menace,
and so they're going back in timeto stop him at his younger self
so that he doesn't ruin their future. So they're going to bring them back
to the future. And Trevor's like, no, no, no, please,
(23:12):
I can't be the first one throughthe portal. Use one of my
goons instead, and they do,and they find out that you can't go
backwards to the portal. It's aone way portal. Otherwise it messes up
their reality and turns them inside outor I don't know, if something happens
to that. It's so terrifying.I'm looking at the panel on the top
left when they realize they can't goback through, like literally they're being ripped
(23:34):
from the from the center outward.Yes, yes, it looks like a
scene from a classic eighties horror movie. Is like maybe hell Raiser or something
something like that. Yeah, totallyooh yes, and Fitzroy, oh my
god, he is having a gasHe's like, haha, you fools,
you're stuck here in the you know, in the present with me. Now
you can't go back to the future. This is now your new home.
(23:57):
We like get used to it.And Bishop is so pissed. Yes,
and they're yeah, they're ready tolike round up these goons. But who
should be there? But of coursethe X Men. And this is when
things start getting really crazy because allthe goons are trying to protect Trevor Fitzroy.
(24:19):
They use image inducers to all turnin to look like Trevor Fitzroy to
confuse everybody, and Storm and Colossusand Iceman are just like trying to figure
out what the hell's going on.They are so confused by what's happening,
because this is I think one ofthe first times they've seen a time travel
(24:40):
portal thing come from the future intothe present. Yeah, and Bishop is
just like, okay, so nowwe're just going to kill them all.
Yeah, it doesn't matter, Yeah, it doesn't matter. Everybody has to
go yeah, yeah, just getthem out of here. Yes, And
that's of course when the X Menstep in because They're like, wait,
wait, wait, wait, wait, no, no, we don't just
like mass murder people. We youknow, we apprehend them, we subdue
(25:03):
them, we do not just murderthem. And if things start getting a
little rowdy, we get, ofcourse a power demonstration of what Bishop does,
because they have to kind of establishwhat that is. So one of
the goons has I being powers,so he shoots Bishop, and Bishop can
show that he can absorb this powerand shoot it right back. And we've
course seen this executed an X Menninety seven flawlessly. And what I learned
(25:29):
when researching Bishop is that I didn'trealize that he is from Australian descent.
I guess Aboriginal descent, and hisparents are also mutants, and his mother
is an energy absorber type, soshe whatever through genetics, gave him that
power. But I thought that wasreally awesome to learn. I like it
(25:52):
a lot. Yeah, Passus istrying to step in and he punches Bishop
strength in the face. Oh mygosh. Yeah, he says, I
think not enemy of our enemy. You may be, but the X Men
do not stand by while lives arecarelessly obliterated. Punch I mean punched by
Colossus ow Like, I don't knowhow Bishop's head didn't just break, like
(26:18):
unless he pulled his punch, ofcourse, unless he just kind of like
slapped him in. That's just alight tap from Colossus. Yeah, he's
he's he's going easy. Probably.Well, I kind of looked into this
a little bit. And Bishop, you know, he absorbs all energy.
You know, he can even tella pathic So would he just be able
to absorb the kinetic energy of thepunch is Well, that's what I thought
when I was reading it too.But yeah, still looks like it hurt
(26:42):
there. Yes, Oh my gosh. Well he's a little bit fuddled.
So Colossus has just said enemy ofour I mean, you may be,
but the X Men do not standby. Well, lives are carelessly obliterated.
And then Bishop says, what Xmen did you say? X men?
What kind of trick is this? And yet can it really be?
(27:07):
Do I dare even dream? Yeah? Because Bishop loves the X man,
I mean he's Can I just say, you're such an amazing voice actor.
It's like ridiculous because it's like, you know, we're talking to you normally,
Yeah, and when you go intoyour voice, you completely transformed.
Yeah, it is wonderful to watchhere. I appreciate it. Thanks.
(27:30):
Yeah, you're muting power of Transformation. Yes, oh well, well everybody's
distracted with this battle. Fitzroy islike, oh goodie, now I can
escape. But he can't escape becausepreviously he was in embroiled in a kind
of fight for the crown, asthey say in drag Race. But he
(27:52):
was trying to get the throne ofhell Fire Club out of schnoby Shaw's hands,
and they he double cross Shenobi.I'm sorry it gets very kind of
condensed in these previous issues, butShanobi's getting the upper hand and he is
kidnapping Trevor Fitzroy all while the XMen and Bishop and his team are fighting.
(28:15):
But I love how these goons kindof grapple down and they put these
clampers down on his fists and thensomething over his mouth. Yeah, it's
a lot, a lot. Iguess they're power dampeners. I guess.
Yeah, something that definitely holds itback, doesn't let him go anywhere.
Yeah. I just kind of acceptwhatever machinery or whatever they're using, like,
(28:37):
yeah, that looks like that wouldkeep it. Yeah, yeah,
yeah, that absolutely works. Yeah, and fitz Roy's powers are he has
to absorb the life force of somebodyand then through that absorption of their energy,
he's able to open temporal portals whichhelp him travel. Of course,
we saw Fitzroy next me in theanimated series, if you guys remember,
(28:57):
so you know he is a characterwe should be familiar with. Yes,
yes, you know. In theprevious issue, like, there was some
scary stuff that went down, likeFitzroy. They chopped off his finger to
get the ring from the half firecould ring, and then Fitzroy was standing
in front of like a circle ofthe all the captive Hellians and stuff,
(29:18):
and he'd like sucked the life forceout of Tarot and I love Tarot,
and I was just like, no, that's right. Oh man. Yeah.
I was reading to eighty two acouple of weeks ago, and I
was like, oh, this isa lot, but yeah, yeah,
it's intense. Yeah, those arethose Hellen characters die in this sequence of
issues, causing Emma to like reallylose it. This is actually like a
(29:42):
really great time in comics history. So if folks listening in to our podcast
are not familiar with this particular eraof Uncanny X Men, it is definitely
it's dense to read, but it'sreally cool to look at. And it
is a formable time of Emma Frost. And so if you're a big Imma
Frost fan, this is literally herturning point of where she goes from villainous
(30:06):
of you know, head of theHelleans the rival, you know, New
Mutants team, to losing them, feeling horrible about it, and then eventually
becoming a good guy. What atransformation. What a transformation? Speak of
transformation. We got to see herin the recent episode. We sure did.
She was able to be saved fromthe rubble, just like in the
(30:26):
comic books. Yeah, and sheturned into her diamond form for the first
time, which is very cool tolook at. Isaac. Yeah, yeah,
And I love the amalgam of comics. How you know that happened in
twenty two thousand and one or twothousand and three or whatever and Grant Morrison's
X Men run. But I lovehow Bo just borrows it from everywhere.
(30:48):
He's like, listen, this ismy world. I'm gonna do my favorite
parts and put it in here.Well. I think that's why it's great
is because the Easter, it's ifit's a definitely if you know, you
know kind of situation, but youdon't feel like slluted if you don't.
But it's extra cool if you havesome insight from before, it's great.
All right, Well, back backwith the comic. Yah, yeah,
back with the comic. We geta very uh, you know cool Bishop
(31:10):
scene because he's kind of starstruck bythe legendary X Man of lore from the
past that he sees before him,the X Man. By all that's holy,
it's you, It really is storm, every bit is commanding, every
bit as beautiful as a legend, say an iceman, always the living contradiction,
(31:33):
the hot headed ice warrior. Butyou, your face is almost the
angels. But no, it's atrick, isn't it a stupid, bloody
trick? Exactly the kind of crueljoke I should have expected from your Lord
Fitzroy. Well, it isn't goingto work. I won't let the love
of the X Men legend stop mefrom destroying you. Yes, Applaza,
(32:01):
plaza plazapplause. Oh my gosh,Bishop is in the room. We are
here Ooh well. Colossus tries tosubdue Bishop once again, and I love
how Malcolm throws him this little braceletthat is one of those power dampers,
(32:24):
which you know, we're very familiarwith from Genosha and Beyond and so they
have them also in the future, but they've condensed it to this cute little
bracelet. It's kind of like theiPhone because back in the day there was
the Zacha Morris phone that they hadand now they have a little tiny iPhone.
So they did those with the dampenerstoo, very stylish and make it
(32:46):
look good. Yeah. What's interestingis Bishop makes his comment about how Colossus
moves much slower than he did inYonder Lore of the x Men that he's
familiar with, and Bishop's like, don't believe everything you read like it's a
fantasy, Like yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. And
I love the idea of you know, of course history, you know is
(33:08):
what you write down, so youknow whether it's true or not, it's
it's what we've read. It justseems like Bishop that was looking for any
excuse not to believe that this isthe real x Man, like no,
this is I know, you're lying, like, you know, don't try
to trick Yeah exactly. Yeah. What do you think about Bishop being so
I mean, I know this isthe point of the story. You know,
they have to do it for plot. But I feel like he is
(33:30):
so bullheaded in this moment, likehe is not giving into any belief.
And I know he just fought abunch of image in Deuce fitz Royce,
so he's kind of used to peopleplaying tricks on him. But I mean,
what do you think is Bishop toohard headed? I don't know if
it's hard headed. I think it'sjust I think it's a lifetime of seeing
(33:50):
the opposite and then all of asudden having the other information come in out
of nowhere, Like you know, you believe something for your entire life and
then you're told, no, thisis how it actually is. That takes
a lot of course correct at leastin my life, I've experienced that,
Like I've gone through from childhood stuffto now believing one thing and then having
it being told the opposite and havingto adjust and like, but at first
it's resistance at first, like no, no, no, no, this
(34:10):
is what I've been told, thisis what I've learned. I know this
to be true. I have proof. Here's the proof that I have.
And then when it's sort of dispelled, like it's very difficult to accept this
new information. So I think Bishopis I think he is hardheaded in a
lot of ways because he's his ownman and everything, and he knows what
he wants and where he wants togo. But at the same time,
I think it's just I think it'sbased in probably seeing this and actually seeing
(34:36):
that it's real, and kind ofthe fear that comes with that and the
uncertainty that comes with that, butalso the acceptance. It's probably a lot
for him to take in at once, so he's trying to like stay in
some sort of normal zone of like, no, I got to make sure
my reality is still real, likeeverything else is like falling apart and weird.
But no, no, at leastI know this is true. You're
not the real X man. Iknow who they are, You're not them.
So I think he's maybe just likeshoving out the truth a little bit
(34:58):
in this case out of just uncertaintyand fear. But yes, that's what
definitely do that. Yeah, yeah, so that's where that's what I think.
But I think there is an elementof bullhead in this in this yeah,
totally. Yeah, Well, hedoesn't have to scream at them,
you know you can do right, right, exactly. Well. On the
next pace, we have our verynext alert for Game Genie. Yeah,
(35:22):
oh guys, Game Genie was agame changer. I don't know if anybody
remembers this, but this was adevice that you could use to hack video
games so that you could have unlimitedlives, you know, in Mario or
whatever, like they had Game Genieacross all different platforms. I love how
the phrase of this says, overtwenty five million lives will be saved.
(35:47):
Yo, video dudes. With GameGenie, You'll never die a reckless video
death because Game Genie grants you stellarvideo powers on most popular video games for
the Nintendo Entertainment System, like youmay never live forever, never die,
or you can get unlimited fire powerand super jumps, maybe even moonwalk the
most triumphant game characters across the screen. Our programmed them to do so much
(36:10):
more. So you may ask, what is the key to this most awesome
power? The power codes, dude, thousands of them that allow you to
unlock these excellent secrets. So partyon with Game Genie and say the most
righteous life of all yours. Ohmy god, I love it. Why
did they read the whole thing.I used to have read the whole thing
(36:31):
is so good. I was,Yeah, I was. I was very
close friends with Crush at Disneyland fora couple of years, so you know,
I got very used to that.Oh so good. Yeah, well
I love it. Just read readthe phone book for us, please sure?
Yeah, if you can find acopy, send it over. That's
(36:53):
true, right, right? Whatan antiquitated phrase? Yeah, yeah,
it's okay. And that's the sadpart. Bishop is not going to tolerate
these fake X men any longer, and Storm is like he's going to kill
Peter Iceman Archangel ignore the others.Bishop is our prime target, and Iceman
(37:16):
says, super shady line. Hesays, you got it, boss lady.
Though somehow I think Cyclops would havetwigged to that long ago a phrase
twig to that. I've never heardthat until this comic, Like, is
that a slangleygo from ninety one?Yeah, I guess so, twig.
(37:37):
But I don't know why you gottabe so shady at Storm. We all
know that she's awesome, so butI think this is an era where she
is taking on the leadership of theGold Team for the first time. And
they give her this kind of likeinternal struggle that she doesn't feel like she's
good enough or whatever. So they'replaying into this at the moment, but
(37:58):
you know they can't just make Stormoff. The Storm is flying in the
air above Bishop with lightning bolts inher hand, and she says, stand
back, Bishop, that you acceptus as the x Men is of no
consequence. You need only know wewill not let you harm any of our
number. Well said. It makesme sad to know you are not who
(38:20):
you say. But the life ofyour Airsat's colossus is nonetheless forfeit. And
the lightning you hurl against me Ican absorb as easily as I did.
I beams lasers. Now let's seeif you can take ice. No conflicting
frequencies must wham a worthy try.But your powers are no match for mine.
(38:47):
When mine is the power to matchyours. Oooooo It's true, though,
because I mean, I don't knowwhat can take Bishop down. Honestly,
he just absorbs everything. But I'llnever forget. I'm just gonna cut
to a time in x Men comicsnot far from here. I think it's
(39:09):
I'm Kidney three oh five. Theyneed to take down Magneto, and they
need to use Bishop to do it. So what they do is all of
the power users zap at him allat the same time, so that he's
just absorbing all of this different powerand he's able to use it on Magneto.
But the only person that takes Bishopdown is Colossus, and that's when
he turned coats and goes to Magneto. Sorry jumping ahead, I just realized,
(39:32):
all right, Colossus, It's justfunny to see Colossus and Bishop fight
now and fight later. Yeah.Well, beauty of cyclical Marvel storytelling.
I love it. Yes, well, yeah, Bishop is no match for
the X Men, and him andhis buddies are able to blast through Iceman's
(39:55):
ice shield. Arkangel's gotta save him. He fires a bunch of his blades
down at him, and they're ableto deflect all the blades somehow with all
of their guns, though I wouldthink some of those blades would get through
some of the fat power. Butyou know, yeah, I was looking
at that. I was like, that is an onslaught of blades. I
don't know how they're not getting cutup a little bit. But yeah,
(40:16):
and in their future, Arcangel didnot transform into Archangel because they are very
confused by these metal feathers and howhis face is blue and everything. So
I didn't realize that I don't knowwhen the time fracture must happen. Where
that is the future. Maybe itwas the days of future pass like way
(40:37):
back in one, but either way, it's just fascinating. But Storm is
like not having it. So she'slike, listen, we're going to do
the hurricane and then we're going toget the gun. Because she's like,
I know what I need to do. She pulls the Bishop's gun and pulls
it right out of it and she'sjust like, let's see you absorb this
bullet, buddy. I love itso much. I love it too.
(41:01):
She's so cutthroat of store was sobadass. Who's the best? It is
the greatest, Yeah, because becausewhile she will like fly and you know,
be beautiful goddess and you know, you may have the rain and I'm
gonna grow flowers in my bedroom, she will literally cut somebody's heart out.
Yeah, yeah, crazy, Ilove her. Do you not want to
(41:23):
be on her bad side? Ever? Oh gosh, Well, we turn
the page. We have our nextadd it's deck the halls with marble mutins.
It's a bunch of T shirts andsweatshirts that you can order and I
will wear them all I know.I was. I was looking at this
page and I was like, I, where are all these things? I
(41:45):
want them to come back, andI want them for the prices that they
are here. No kidding, becausethis twelve dollars and ninety five cent Magneto
Maxi print shirt with the full JimLee Magneto that says I am Magneto.
Like, what an incredible shirt.I know Maxi shirts now that people print
and they're two hundred dollars. It'swhat Yeah? Oh wow, had I
(42:09):
known but I didn't. Yeah, that's so cool. On this thing,
you can order Spidy versus Morbius Tshirts. You get the iconic X Men
number one Jim Lee Connecting cover Tshirt, which is front and back,
so on the front you get thisdoesn't make too much sense, I guess
(42:30):
Magneto's not on it, but Cyclopsand Wolverine on the front and on the
back you get the rest of theteam. You get the Magnio Maxi print.
You get a Spidy band T shirt. Oh, which is I guess
all around the bottom of the proNT. Okay, I'm kind of into that
silver Surfer and Galactis shirt. Thatlooks kind of hot. I was looking
(42:50):
at that one too. That's prettycool. And honestly, the Spider Man
sweatshirt with the Spider Man and theclassic like type print on the top left
M I like that. Mm hmm. This is all great. Yeah,
and they also have an X Menversion. I see they show the logo
with Cyclops and his X Factory uniformrandomly, but why not? It says
like our marvel teas the quality ofour sweatshirts is unconditionally guarantee to knock your
(43:15):
socks off or your money back.Don't hesitate to mutate your style. Now.
Was there any kid that ever complainedand said, you know what,
my sweatshirt was not unconditionally guaranteed. It did not knock my socks off.
I want my money back. Yeah, no, everybody, this is a
(43:36):
success rate. Whoever bought these?Yes, sure, yes, I will
say. If you look for vintage, like especially X Men wear from this
era, you can still find it. And it's so expensive by the way.
They Oh my gosh, Isaac,I saw the coolest vintage Bishop sweatshirt
(43:57):
from the nineties. It's at it'sat Mile High Comics in Denver, Colorado.
Oh, I'm sure they want threehundred dollars for it, but I'm
just saying it's so it's literally avintage unique. It's so rare that they
put Bishop on stuff. So wehave to find this, track this down,
and we have to get the internetto make sure that you get this
sweatshirt. Yes, for real, after this is done, I want the
(44:20):
information. I want to I wouldlove to connect and be like, hey,
you guys will have this. Iat least want to see it.
I couldn't believe it. I thinkI have a photo of it somewhere on
my phone, but I just realized. I was like, oh my gosh,
I never see Bishop stuff. Andthey had a bishop's sweatshirt that was
so cool, and I would havebought it if it wasn't three hundred dollars.
But you know, as as thereigning bishop, I mean, I
(44:42):
think you should have it. Yes, I will. I'm going to research
that immediately. Good. Yeah,I want it. Mile High Comics.
You said Mile High Comics in Denver, Colorado. I was road tripping from
LA to Minnesota, moving myself backhere to Twin Cities, and I stopped
there because it's an iconic comic bookstore that we often see in these issues
because they promote it, and anyways, I just remember that they had it
(45:06):
was so cool. I was reallyjealous. That's really cool. So thank
you for that. Oh yeah, yeah, absolutely, no, my pleasure.
All right. Anyways, so backwith the story. We are in
the X Mansion and oh no,no, we're on the X mansion.
We're like in some sort of shipabove wherever they're at. But we have
Jean and Emma. Yeah, theyare laid out on tables, unconscious and
(45:30):
Professor X's kind of has his armaround Emma and forges sitting there looking back
at them. And then what happensChandler, Well, I just want to
kind of explain what's going on alittle bit, just so right now,
Jean has died again again again. Her body is her mind slash consciousness is
(45:53):
not in her body anymore. It'sjust a shell and her all of her
being is insight Emma Frost, andthey're trying to now re separate Jean's consciousness
out of Emma and into her body. And the reason why she took her
consciousness out of her bodies because thesesentinels destroyed her body or attacked her body.
(46:15):
I don't know how they got thenew body whatever. It's comics,
but I just love that. Ilove how it's like, can Gene die
any more time? I know?Yeah, I feel so bad for her
like this so much, Like comeon, give her a break, just
let her live for a while, like just a little while. Yeah,
you know, like when I'm recallingthe movies, at the end of one
(46:37):
of them, Professor spoiler alert,Professor X puts his consciousness in somebody else,
a Koma patient's body that's across youknow, the world. And I
always thought that, like it's sofar fetched, not a left field but
okay, but no, I meanthis was in the comics, this stuff,
Yeah, you know, it's Legitabsolutely was in the comics. Yeah,
(46:58):
so good. Well, yeah,Professor is working to get Gene out
of Emma into Jean's body. Forgesthere helping him, and they are able
to be successful. And they aresomehow able to get Gene out of Emma
and Gene is fine, but Emmais not. For some reason, she
remains unconscious. After this separation,we get Gene back, she has revived.
(47:24):
Ooh. And then this big shipshows up and we have Shinobi Shaw
who has recaptured Trevor Fitzroy, andthey are again battling for control of the
health Fire Club. It seems tobe a thing that is run by the
game Master, as Chris said inthe opening comments of what the thing is
(47:49):
all about. And so the gameMaster has pitted these two guys against each
other to see who can get thisring or to run the health Fire Club.
I don't know. Obviously, itdoesn't matter because at the end of
the day, the hell Fire Clubis always run by the same people and
it's Sebassian ship and everybody like that, you know, So these guys don't
quite last. Did anybody else readthe line did you miss me precious?
(48:14):
While he's holding the ring and it'ssparkling, did you very Schmiegel? And
I think they knew exactly what theywere doing. That is really cool.
Thank you for pointing that out. That's really cool. And then at the
end of the day, uh,the game Master has vowed in Shinobi's favor
and he has won, and they'recheersing with their champagne flutes and they're like
(48:38):
huzzah, we've done it. Whateverthat is, we don't know. But
Trevor is so upset, and he'slike, as long as I live,
I shall do everything in my powerto bring you down, to make the
leadership of the hell Fire Club minemine. He hasn't say it twice.
Yeah, it doesn't. It doesn'thit hard enough unless you, oh mine.
(49:06):
And then we're back with Storm andBishop and she's got that gun at
his neck. She's like, youneed to call down. Yeah, So
the narration says below and Storm isfacing off with Bishop the gun right pointing
at his neck, and she says, you are fortunate. Indeed, a
bishop, Professor X says, justinformed me telepathically that Gene Gray is alive
(49:29):
and well. And so you continueto play acting why the basis of no
further use? Damaged and exposed asit is, Fitzroy has made good his
escape by now, what do youhope to profit from continuing this bit of
figure? I think the questions aremine to ask a bishop. We can
(49:50):
begin with a detailed explanation of justwho you are and why you wear the
emblem of the X men. Iwear what I earned, earned in a
lifetime of combat, of fighting topreserve the dream of Charles Xavier. That
is not an answer, Bishop,I want more if you are too,
and then what happens to you? Then boom, there's a big explosion x
(50:17):
explosion. Oh yes, Fitzroy leftdelayed charges to clean up after his escape.
His whole lair is collapsing, butStorm is able to make a pressure
dome of course of air and protecther x Men and Randall and Malcolm and
(50:40):
Bishop are having to escape out adifferent way, but Storm is able to
whisk up Archangel, Colossus and Icemanand escape as the whole layer explodes.
So then they reconvene. They recapwhat just happened in the issue, talk
about how they have to figure outwhat is going on with Bishop, and
(51:02):
we cut to the game Master andSelene doing their best villain laughter and the
like. Things are going according toplan. I just love like these villain
these villain endings Selene, especially likethen games Master, then the game will
(51:23):
truly become interesting. I wouldn't havebeen able to handle it, like,
because I you know what these monthlyreleases like, I would have been crazy
as a kid, being like, what's gonna have? What's happening next,
what's the void? Where are wegoing? Well? As a comic book
reader of current it is a bitfrustrated. Still not ideal, Yeah,
(51:44):
Delbay, I mean we have toweak, we have to we wait,
oh my god speaking, we haveto wait weekly for x N ninety seven.
So it's true. Are you atwelve am or are you a morning
or are you like an afterwork watcher? Chandler, I'm a I'm a more
watcher. Yeah, it's two amfor us here in the Midwest, so
(52:05):
two am is just a bit late. Yeah, I see it as soon
as I wake up. But doyou watch the episodes when they come out,
Isaac? I am actually an eveningday of watcher because I have friends
of mine that we all gather togetherand watch it at one of my friends
places or things like tonight. SoI actually I haven't seen the new episode.
This will be the first time tonightat at Scummon Villainy so nice.
(52:31):
Lately it's been me avoiding the internetfor twenty four hours basically until I get
to the evening of Wednesday, andthen I can be like, okay,
I can watch it, you know, Oh good luck, Oh my gosh,
thank you I know, avoiding thosespoilers. It's a mind fill,
you know, I can't. It'svery difficult. Yeah, oh gosh.
And I'm into like a Instagram likechat group where people talk about it instantly,
(52:52):
and I'm like, mute, mute, mute. I'm like, I
cannot. Like they just they needto, like the second the show starts,
they have to like live tweet whatever'sgoing on. Yeah, there hasn't
been this much excitement for a televisionshow from the fans and from the general
audience in a very long time.Anyways, Well that's the issue. We
(53:12):
really appreciate you taking the time tojoin us for this awesome recap of un
kinning X Men two eighty three. There's obviously not a big plot because it's
mostly just the X Men battling Bishop, but yeah, it was awesome to
have your voice make Bishop of Lifein this issue. Thank you. And
actually I have brought this here toshow you guys that got this. I
(53:34):
think I think like maybe like afew months after I had gotten the role
and nobody knew, but I boughtthis on eBay. But this this is
now a very private session of mine, so I had to pick it one
up. Yes, Wow, weare looking at a great at nine point
eight issue and this is this isthe previous issue from what we covered right,
yes, correct, yeah, yes, so issue number two eighty two
(53:58):
of you guys. It is Christinelooking and beautiful. I love that cover.
I love That's one of my favoritecovers because it's so dynamic and yeah,
Bishop and his buddies look so coolin their uniforms coming out of their
time portal and everything. I loveit. Well cool, that's a great
get yeah. That And then onemore This is from when was this twenty
(54:22):
twenty three in September. I justbrought it to one orcon. I have
some of the cast sign it withme. But this is the ninety seven
Hell Fire Gala variant cover. Yes, I remember you getting the signature,
so they came back slabbed already.Yeah. Wow that is beautiful. Yeah,
oh my gosh. So do youhave all your names? Then in
(54:43):
the little descriptor up there that sayssigned by they're all They're all in there.
Amazing. Yeah. So nine pointeight. This is x Y ninety
seven cover by Dan Wiesenmeier and it'sof the Health Fire Gala issue or whatever.
This variant is for but yeah,it's signed by all the cast members.
And I remember in the green roomyou had this. Yeah. I
(55:04):
loved it because, like you know, we were doing photos and you guys
were all signing these posters for eachother, but you had your like priority.
You're like I did. Yeah,I'm showing up late because I've taught
a class. I've got to getmy comic signed, and then I will
do whatever you need me to do. Yeah, I gotta do things in
order. Yeah, And that wasactually kind of a cool full circle moment
for me with comic collecting. Isfor the Bishop cover that I just showed
(55:25):
you, I took it. Iremember thinking about this question at Comic at
San Diego like a year and ahalf ago, and so I went up
to them at this comic at ComicConvention at won er Con to the CGC
booth and I was like, Ihave this nine point eight first appearance of
Bishop. If I sign this, will it count as a CGC signature series
(55:45):
label because I'm the voice of thecharacter. And they're like, yeah,
it will. So I circle backaround and now it's an official like signature
label thing, so it's I willI will whisk that away and do something
with it later on, but I'mjust happy. It was really really cool
experience to sure in the character likethat. So anyway, so cool,
Oh my gosh, so very cool. And soon you will have this vintage
(56:06):
Exsmith sweatshirt or it's going to lookat there. Oh my gosh, if
you find it, I need toknow, I need to know, I
will great. Well cool. Well, So, if if people want to
follow you on social media or theywant to keep up with what you're doing,
how can they find you? SoI'm IRS Voices and Instagram and on
