(00:00):
Hi, everybody. This is Chandler, and this is Chris, and this
is Chad. And you're listening tothe podcast. Everybody. We're here with

(00:21):
episode one six and we have avery special guest, Chad Anderson of Gray
Maulk and Lane Podcast. Welcome Chad. Hello, Chad. I'm so happy
to be back at your house. This is great. It's good to have
you back. Now. You've beenon the show before and now you've come
back to us with this very specialissue that we're going to get into,

(00:41):
all about the nineties and a roguesentinel. But before we get into that,
we have no questions about your podcast. Yeah, I want to dive
into the history. Why did youstart it? Now? Has your podcast
evolved over time? Give us alittle like taste of the format. All
they the super fast version. Ihave a lot of creative energy to offer,

(01:04):
and I used to write comics, then I wrote books, and then
I made a movie, and thena pandemic hit and I was like,
what do I do with all thisenergy? And I researched and thought things
over for a while and launched ashow. We are now over three years
later. My show involves the formulationof small ensembles of comic book professionals.
We review old Silver Age comic bookstogether and it's a ton of fun.

(01:27):
We're hitting the early seventies right now, building slowly toward Giant Size X Men
number one, which should be thepremiere episode of twenty twenty five. So
I'm very excited to be in anew era of the Silver Age. It's
been a great time this year onthe show. Wonderful. Who have been
some of your favorite guests on theshow. Oh, that's like choosing my

(01:48):
favorite child, my favorite Every episodeis so unique. My favorite episodes that
stand out though, are those thathave involved me meeting and befriending some of
my like childhood heroes. Jam Day, Matteus, Anni Nassenti, Fabe Nicieza,
and Ian Churchill are probably the topfour. These are people that I
just adored growing up, and tobe on like a first name basis with

(02:10):
them is such a crazy thing tohappen to be at forty five, you
know, absolutely, yeah, Wellyou know, not only do you have
a podcast, but you're so talentedand creative. You have other projects going
on too, like Gay Mormon Dad. Can you tell us about that?
Gay Mormon Dad is my memoir thatI published back in twenty eighteen, which

(02:34):
I am now adapting into a graphicmemoir. So it was crazy taking my
own story of trauma and survival andresiliency. I have commissioned excuse me,
I'm partnering with Remy Burt, whois an incredible non binary artist. Seeing
my life captured through the eyes ofanother penciler like using my references, it's

(02:55):
a crazy experience. We ran asuccessful Kickstarter and April the book is fully
funded and the art is coming inregularly. It is such a joy to
see my story interpreted in this way, so I'm really proud of it.
The print memoir is still out thereon Amazon. I'm also proud of that.
But seeing it in this format,I think is it's going to tell

(03:16):
my story in a different way,and I think it has the potential to
help a lot of people. It'sa powerful story. It also feels like
a legacy. I'm leaving my childrenin a weird way, like it's just
it's a really big honor to putthis book together. To see where I've
come from and what I've created withmy life, you know, that's fantastic.
When can we expect it to beavailable. It depends on the speed

(03:38):
with which the art is finished,So my loose answer is January through July
next year. But I'm really lookingforward to it awesome. Can't wait to
see it and read it in ourfavorite format of comic book form. Same
now, you attended The Uncanny Experiencefor our inaugural freshman year. We're just

(04:02):
curious what were some of your favoritemoments from the event. You know,
it was so intensely legitimizing, andto be asked by you guys to moderate
the panel for the voice actors fromthe original cartoon series, what a just
tremendous joy being present there. Igot to be a professor in a class

(04:23):
about the Silver Age, and Igot to meet some of my childhood heroes
again. It was also an opportunityto meet thirty to forty of the people
that I have befriended through the show, including the two of you. Seeing
everyone in person and having those connectionsbe real in real life was so wonderful.
Everyone there was just all smiles theentire weekend. Everyone was so happy

(04:46):
to be there, and I wouldnot say this word not true. It's
my favorite con I've ever attended.I can't wait to come back again this
summer, and I've got some reallyfun plans for panels. We're doing a
fashion review, which is maybe themost fun you've ever had at a panel
ever. I promise, trust me, you'll come and see you You'll see
what I'm talking about. We're alsogoing to do a sentinels class this year,

(05:06):
which I'm very excited about. We'retalking sentinels today. I feel like
I have a college degree in sentinelsafter doing a whole month of sentinels on
my show. Right, I can'twait for your dissertation on sentinels. Yeah,
it's something well, super fun.I'm so glad to hear the feedback
because you know, we worked tirelesslyon that event and we cannot wait for

(05:28):
it to come back this September twentyeighth and twenty ninth in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
So if you guys are listening andyou heard Chace testimonial and you want
to check it out, just goto wwwdmk experience dot com and learn for
yourself. Tell us who are wecan listen to Graymalkin Lane, I mean
graam Elkan Lane's all over the place. I put out a lot of content.
So you'll find me pretty easy.Jump on any of your podcasting platforms,

(05:50):
you know, Spotify, Apple,Google, it's there, just Graymalkin
Lane Is with a G R AY. You'll find it. It's a
it's a pretty fun show. Ithink you'll have a lot of smiles.
In fact, I just recorded anepisode before we're doing this and I'm still
smiling from of that one. Itwas really fun. Yes, that's great
happiness and joy. So you broughtus a very huge, ginormous, big

(06:16):
issue with a whopping eighty four pagesof awesome in which nothing happens. Well,
no, there's one climate moment whichwe'll get into regarding a sentinel,
but and a lot of weird moments. Yes, such a choice. So
why did you choose this issue? You know, when I was doing a
Sentinels month on my show, Idid a lot of research into how we

(06:40):
tell robots stories in popular fiction.I'll cover this very quickly. There's three
ways that we tell robot stories, and the sentinels all fall into this.
Number one is we tell the storyof robots as the tool of man being
programmed in a particular way. Andthen people like what their responsibility is with
that technology. Number two is whenthe robots become sentient and do they decide

(07:02):
to be good or evil compared tohow Man feels about them. And then
the third story, oversimplifying, iswhen robots become like the Doomsday weapon.
It's the thing that tries to destroyeverything on the earth. And we see
these three types of stories revisited ajillion million times in the Sentinels over the
years. There's a shocking number ofSentinels becoming sentient stories and this is one

(07:26):
of them, and it's kind ofa cute one. So when I was
asked to come on the show, this was a fresh one in my mind.
It's a simple read, it's astandalone issue, and I have fond
memories of it. It's fun andas Chris says, big it has so
many characters in it. And yeah, we'll dive into it, but first
let's set the era. Yes,so this is X Men Annual Volume two,

(07:49):
ninety six. How do you saythis? Yeah, so x x
Men Annual ninety six. This isn'tan era where they stopped doing numbers and
they just started like the year ofthe annuals. So it's X Men Annual
Apostrophe ninety six. Yeah, numberninety six, I know that. I
got like confused for a second becausewe're so everything ninety seven. I was

(08:13):
like, oh wait, there wasa ninety six the Dawn of ninety seven?
Was this the prequel? But anyway, the publication date was November thirtieth
of nineteen ninety five. Actually.Yeah. The top song of this era
was a song that I sang anytimeit came on the radio. It is
One Sweet Day by Mariah Carey andBoyce to men, all right, this

(08:37):
is this is taking me back tolike high school dances in the cap and
uh oh yeah, no that wasThat was a song that was everywhere.
Somebody I love a music video too, where they're all in the recording studio
and Maria Carey's doing her whistle tonework. Come on you want you want
the bar? Yeah? I wantthe song, suby. I never told

(09:01):
you all I wanted to say,And now it's too late to hold you
because you've gone away so far away, all right. Never have I imagined

(09:22):
I could say the whole song.I don't know, I don't know.
I don't remember this song. MyI know this song, but I have
a little weird jukebox brain. Sowhen you say one fine day, I
go back to like the nineteen fifties, like one fine day. Yeah.
He looked at me like that's wheremy brain goes. Well, this is
one sweet day on sweet so keepit, keep it sweet. What was

(09:43):
the top movie, Chris? Thetop movie was Toy Story, the original
the og the first Pixar movie ofall time. Yeah, I was a
big deal in this air. Thatwas a huge deal in nineteen get I
think it was one. Yeah, one of the first all CGI animated you
know releases. Obviously it caught Disney'sattention and they bought them. Yeah,

(10:05):
that's right. And now, atthe time of recording this, we are
currently in a timeline of Pixar whereInside Out Too is out in the movie
theaters. Yes, so they havecome a long way, Pixar. So
we are doing as Chris said.Xcellent Annual nineteen ninety six or Apause Free
ninety six written by Larry Hama.Oh love Larry Hama, Yes, a

(10:26):
previous guest on our show. Goback and listen to whatever episode number that
is. We can't keep track anymore. It is art Yes by Roberto Flores
and Anthony Castillo. Yeah, allright, well let's start with the cover.
The cover is beautiful. It's byBernard Chang. I could tell by
the signature it is not the interiorartist. And it's great. But Storm

(10:50):
looks very sad on this cover.Yeah, she's actually giving kind of a
Disney princess sprawl. Yes, likeat the at the foot of a graves
or at the fountain or at thefoot of the bed. Yes, a
sentinel has just fainted and there's likethirty characters gathered around it. But they're

(11:11):
they're setting up the story well, because we get this wolverine looking at cable
moment, which you know, kindof delves in, and also everyone's looking
at each other suspiciously. We geta little side eyes. Bishop has a
side eye. Joseph has a sideeye. Joseph. Joseph just blew out
his homemade yes, exactly. Well, he just keeps it electromagnetically flowing at

(11:31):
all times. I'm so glad thatwe get a Joseph isshue, because I
feel like we never get it.This is a wrap around cover. By
the way, my gosh sore evenmore characters. I didn't even see this
until this very moment I was todayyears old. There's more, there's rogue,
we have, Oh, Emma Frostis making an appearance. All of

(11:52):
it's all of the characters who werein the X Men, X Force and
Generation X at the time, andthe post on slat. This is like
the healing issue where the teams aregetting together after all the Onslaught crazy and
Professor X is missing and like theworld was ending for a minute there.
Yeah, And it's funny because we'vedid another healing issue after Extinction. What

(12:16):
extinct executioner song? Not Extinction executioner, So there's too many ex'es. We
did executioner songs at the log withJubilee teaching Xavier how to rollerblade and everybody,
like those come down issues always arepeople's favorites, so I'm glad that
you chose one. I actually neverread the Onslaught stuff because I was losing

(12:39):
interest at this time in my life. I was like, no, I
was like, I just went throughAge of pocalyps it was fantastic, and
now we're doing this well. Speakingof the history of the Sentinels, which
is relevant for this issue, Onslaughtwas the rage baby of Xavier and Magneto
and they repurposed their own sentinels towork for them. And there's so many
issues, so this is where allthe heroes were, all all the books

(13:00):
were canceled, so like the finalissue of Avengers and Fantastic Four, and
all these books have giant sentinels inthem because they're all disappearing in Onslaught and
they're all over the Marvel universe rightnow. So the sentinel we're going to
meet in this one is a formerOnslaught sentinel who has become sentient. Yes,
indeed, And of course we havecovered the Dawn of Onslaught with X

(13:24):
Men number twenty five that was writtenby Fabian Ns and he was our special
guest for that issue, so youcan read and hear all about the act
of Xavier wiping Magneto's brain and thusseating Onslaught. Yes, all right,
well let's get into this issue.Yes, right away. We have some

(13:46):
portraits panels with Wolverine, Cannibal,Rogue, Siren, Sunspot and m Yes
they are they're they're kind of settingus up like it's going to be a
battle. Yeah, And the cableon the bottom it gives a lot of
X Men ninety seven energy. Whenyou get to the group shot like Gambit
shirtless Will Ranson is like ratchet, like post post transformation, no nose era.

(14:13):
Yes, yeah, they love toget a little slutty when they're playing
sports. They love it. They'relike, we're showing all the skin cannonballs
wearing the worst shirt. What isthat? What is like just a It's
like a waste basket upside down withglasses that look like a trash bin with
googly eyes or something. I don'tknow what that is. Yeah, No,

(14:37):
I'm not loving the fashion in thisissue. I don't know what is
happening. But Storm, I justgot to say, like, I look
at her and she's like beautiful fit, looks like Alicia Marie body. Yes,
with the Tea Boss hair from TLC. Yes, just gorgeous. I
don't know why her socks are sobaggy or she had leg warmers that fell

(15:00):
down around her ankles, but Idon't I don't know what's happening around her
ankles. Yeah, that's a realodd Actually, we also get Calibin here,
who gets a big moment in thisyear. Caliban's a dear favorite of
mine. I love this character.I'm so fond of him. Yeah,
he's Wolverine. And the hair growingoff of Wolverine's arms is so gross.

(15:20):
It's so gross. That's like alie. It's so specific too, It's
like, why doesn't it grow everywhere? No, it's just this four arm
razor hair. I do not wantto see his pubes. I hope it's
all right to say that on yourshow. It's totally fine. Yeah,
he's looking barrel oh so fair.I vote for Rogue for best look because

(15:43):
it just looks like her her character. She looks like the Barbie doll version
of her, a little bit likemore of a bratstall brats doall. Yes,
Castillo U Ethnic Castillo, Robert toFlora's and Anthony Castrio. Yeah,
I don't recall them from other issuesor other areas. It's a big cast

(16:07):
to draw. And Iceman's wearing likea goofy hat and just being the biggest
dumbass through this hole. Yes,he absolutely is. Well, yeah,
so they're they're they're playing ball, you know, as they do and uh
as as you set up. TheStorm is up to bat. The teams
are tied. This could be thedeciding hit if Wolverine can strike her out.

(16:36):
Then the oh it's the wolver theWolfsters versus the Stormers. I forgot
to visit the team names. Butyeah, Wolverine is trying to strike her
out and also psych her out atthe same time. Because everybody's you know,
yelling a big game and everyone's tryingto steal bases. There's a lot
there's a lot of baseball talk. There's a lot of really cute little character

(16:59):
moments, and we don't have tocover them all. But like Shatterstar being
Domino, this game is no challengefor a true warrior born. Shouldn't we
be training and boom boom going giveit a rest? Shatterstar like just a
lot of cute little nineties shit likethat. It makes me happy. We
have our very first out and thisis for Sprinklins dan In Magic Crystals.

(17:19):
Color change crystals, add magic, you can taste. So basically the ad
is kind of like this folding artworkwhere I guess it looks like the yogurt
bowl. So it's a cup ofyogurt that you add crystals in too,
make your yogurt a different color thatyou can taste. Yes, magnificent tasting

(17:42):
coloring. I do not need thisproduct. And the art. That character's
eyes on that art are horrified. It's sugar. It's scary. You're adding
sugar to your yogurt. This wouldbe outlawed today in grocery store. Oh
yeah, no, it's fruit ornothing. But yeah, wrecked sugarhistles onto
yogurt for children. No, thatboy has a full bathtub full of yogurt

(18:06):
that he's about. Yeah, that'sa disgusting ad. I hate it.
I'm so grossed out. But theart is so nineties. Oh it is,
you know product, This product isso nineties. Oh it's one of
those fold I don't want to foldit, fold it, but yeah,
it's like Mad magazine where you foldit. Yeah, I ad, and

(18:26):
then it appre's to be a differentimage. Oh I don't want to do
that. I don't want to.You don't want to ruin your comic.
Oh okay, we won't ruin yourcomic. No, we're not going to
ruin that all right. Anyways,Wolverine brows, he would would you feed
your kids that yogurt? My childrenwould not eat that yogurt, all right,

(18:47):
Not because I wouldn't serve them. They just would refuse it. They
will, okay, they're not bigsugar kids there. That's just yet.
No, that came vegetables now I'veraised them. Well, well, there's
the goofy hat by the way thatIceman's wearing. Oh my gosh, it's
so goofy, like it's literally goofy, literally literally goofy. Yes, without

(19:12):
like copyright infringement goofy. But yeah, I'll wait a minute. I mean,
you know, nowadays it's Disney inthe Marvel so it's all good.
They can have Mickey hats and stuff, and that's true. Yeah, they're
all one family now. Yeah, but I don't know about Marvel comics.
Well, they know they have theDisney covers now, yeah, that's right,

(19:33):
the Disney homage, Oh my gosh, Dazzler as many Mouse debuts as
the Dazzler. I have to readthat. Is that just a cover?
It's just a cover. Oh damnit. Yeah, they don't. They
don't redo all the story. There'sit's such a tease Marvel. That would
be cute though to see some Disneycharacters in classic Marvel Comics stories just drawn

(19:56):
into the story. There are someof those happening. I think there's a
what if Donald Duck became four comingout? Oh yes, what ifs?
Yes? Yeah, Well, anyways, back to the game. So Wolverine
he has thrown two strikes and Beastis trying to steal a base. Uh.
They try to catch him off guard, but he is safe. Cable

(20:18):
calls him safe and this is thestart of the Wolverine versus Cable drama because
everyone's like boo, okay, Sowho is this girl wearing a muppet on
her tanks? Julie, you believewhat are they doing to her? Ass?
Is out? She's in her bikiniwith a little muppet. That is

(20:40):
a little little bikini. We've gotScott and Jean riding by on dirt bikes
announcing a barbecue. Scott's like openshirt flowing in the breeze. This is
such a mood. I love howthey're popping. We leave, all right,
but we got to like rate somehair here. What do you think
of Jube's hair? Well, she'sgiving season five of X Men, the

(21:03):
animated series. Oh my god, you're right, yes, this is her
season five haircut. Yes, literallyin nineteen ninety six, So this is
what she looks like. Are theyprobably were told to draw her that way
in the show. Interesting if yougo to the next page though, on
the bottom panel where Skin is running, look at Monet's hair. It's like

(21:26):
a powerful slick going. I don'tknow what's happening. Yeah, there's a
lot going on, but anyways, third ball goes in, Storm cracks it,
and Wolverine can't catch it and Gambacan't catch it, and basically the
Stormsters win. Yay, But thegame is interrupted by a giant damage sentinel

(21:48):
from the sky and a dad Ifthat got us, Oh yes, it
looked scary. I love I lovehow sentinels always bring drama. He's all
dance moves out. I love it. Yes, oh my gosh. Well,

(22:11):
as we know, the sentinel isnot going to attack them, but
they are going to attack ants.Oh yes they will, yes, which
I truly could not blame them.Right, It's a sentinel over the Xavier
School that like got past their defenses, and you know, I understand it.
I do. Yes. So wegot Storm, Rogue, Canniball,

(22:33):
sun Spot, Iceman all going afterthe sentinel, Cyclops and Gene you know,
hitting the brakes because they're like,oh my god, a sentinel whipping
around Zarkin, the optic blasts,oh and then it knocks the Sentinel over
into the power lines. No seemsthe action in this issue was really short
lived. It happens really quickly, and as the Sentinel falls, it basically

(22:57):
gives them an origin story that ithad like an extra upgraded processor because it
was supposed to like study humans andsentinels. It was working for Onslaught,
but it was made sentient and itjust like was looking for somebodies. It's
kind of like a mutant Sentinel, which is again I think we've seen a
whole bunch of times. There's ashocking number of mutant sentinels in the comic

(23:19):
books. Yes, yes, wellyeah, he's telling this origin story and
we're getting all the details. Butbecause of this fight and not because of
the X Men, because of thepower lines, his receptors start failing,
so's he's dying and he's scared, and it makes all the X Men react

(23:41):
and his delights literally go out inhis eyes, and it makes Jubilee start
crying. And as he as he'sdying, he says and Telephontine, I
love her. Don't see when Ioh, it's supposed because not Fontaine Devine
exactly. System crash, is thisshut down. This unit is afraid.

(24:02):
Oh, I feel like, Okay, there's a Wolverine issue, is there?
There's issues and Jubilee are dealing withsentient sentinel. Oh, that's actually
referenced in this issue. And LarryHammer wrote that one as well. Yeah,
and I feel like I read thatone and I remember it also dying
in Jubilee being upset. So thisis her set second sentinel sentient death.

(24:26):
So I told you there's the threestories second sentinal sentient Anyway, I told
you there's the three sentinel stories. The second one is where they become sentient?
Are they either good or evil? And this one was good and now
it's lost. The innocence is god. Get do you guys have a favorite
sentience sentinel that comes to mind? No? No, So I feel like

(24:48):
there was a girl named Tranary whocould control sentinels or controlary. Trainary didn't
have a sentient sentinel, but shehad a sentinel that she painted rainbows on
and like they they cleared out themiddle of the sentinel and put seats in
it, and it was their transportfor a while. She named it Sentinel
X. Yes, and it waslike her pet or whatever. Yeah,
and then Forge Forge had Cerebra, who was a sentient sentinel that was like

(25:11):
fully part of the team for awhile. That's right, Yeah, that's
right. Yeah, so you knowthere's a lot of a lot of you
know, sentient sentinels. Anyways,it's dead. Jubilee is sad and like
naked. Well, yes, I'mjust like wow running into Wolverine's naked arms.

(25:33):
It's like huge. His arms arelike so big. She's like,
please run your arm hair against mynaked body while I cry. Yeah,
oh my gosh. I just havethis, like I don't know, flashes
in my head of being married toWolverine and having a Sunday morning where he
tickles your face to wake you upwith his arm hair. Gross and it's

(25:56):
supposed to be cute but it's alsogross. Yeah, you don't know how
to take it. And then youknow there's another scene where you know,
I'll be chasing him around the housewith some scissors, going like give it
here, and'll be like no,it'll just go back with my healing power.
Wolverine and Cable are so grumpy.Cable's like it was essentiel and Wolverine's
like yeah, but it had feelingsand cables like, I see more people

(26:18):
die than you have. And yes, they're just going back and forth about
trauva stacking. Well they like teamsform around and then it cracks me up.
Yes, yeah, well you know, so everybody's getting like questionable about
everybody. So they're all teaming upon each other. They're all picking on
each other, and Cyclops and Jeaneare like, no, this is not
what the professor would want. Yclobsputs them in time out. He does,

(26:45):
I'm loving Jean's outfit, by theway. Oh the unnecessary red belt
that that's on her waist. Yeah, I don't know. I'm getting some
and Margaret vibes or something going there. My Roadue could have cut those cut
offs a little hig though. Iknow right right, they just started low,
but they just, you know, they just go up and up and

(27:06):
up as it threads out. Ridiculous. Looks like Johnny Cage all right,
next page, next page, youknow, rogue. She basically says,
no, Xavier wants to stick together, not not pull apart, and Caliban
has the big moment. Calibrin getshis dumb Hulk moment where he stands up

(27:26):
and gives a little speech about like, Caliban is dumb, but also Caliban
thinks maybe Xavier still loves you,and they're like, oh, Calibin,
thank you for bringing us all backtogether again. God bless us everyone.
It's really good, you know. But you know, I just forget why
he's so huge. It's an Apocalypsething, right, mm hmm. He

(27:49):
got evolved. Yeah, and thisis the era where he's slowly turning dumb,
where he actually got a prominent placeon the X Sports team for a
while before he got called back toApocalypse. We basically haven't really seen it
much since, except that one timeForge put his face on the front of
his army. I was going tosay what he made when he made clothes
out of him? Oh my god. Well, yes, because Caliban.

(28:12):
We've covered the first appearance of Calibana long time ago. I'm just Larry.
I'm just looking at this picture ofStorm and she's lost her little te
boz strings. She thought, Ihate those strings. They're so weird interesting.
Oh yeah, then they forgot tocolor in between here. I always

(28:33):
yeah, I'm always taking anyway.Oh, you're seeing all those mistakes.
We get a cute gig where Cannonball, who I love, gets a camera
and starts recording everyone. Uh,there's that famous famous Cannonball and Iceman like
flirt with each other when they're onthe grade and cat your creed campaign together.
So this image of like beast ticksthe camera and the Iceman pours ice

(28:57):
directly down cannon shorts better than awedgie. I call it a fridgie,
which causes Cannonball to jump into thesky like what the hell? Uh that's
very forward and maybe like borderline someonecalled hr right, oh right, exactly,
wow, hazing on the ex campuslike down down the butt, like

(29:18):
it's well, I love this homevideo moment of these pages. So you've
cut the camera kind of moves around, so the artist is pretending like they're
drawing what the camera sees, andCannonball gets the camera back and he turns
it on the girls and he's like, oh, the girls, they're sunning
themselves, including his sister. That'shis the blonde is his sister. Yes,

(29:40):
yeah, that's kind of gross andyeah, and she's just like can
you not? Can you not?Because that's cross, like absolutely not.
And then Jubilee gets in his faceand passs the whatever the camcorder out of
his hands. Cannon Ball gets knockedinto the pool where Caliban and Shatterstar splash
him everywhere, playing water polo. It's the whole it's just silly, it's

(30:03):
just nonsense interactions with the teammates, which makes it kind of delightful. Oh
my gosh. But like Shatterstar andIceman in the pol together, Yeah,
they're playing water polo. Oh myyeah, And this is real X Men
ninety seven vibe because Joseph, who'sthe clone of Magneto, is flirting with
Rogue and Magneto and Gambit is nothaving it. Oh yeah, he's like
in the shade, he's so shady. Okay, wait a minute, you

(30:26):
know, educate me a little bit. Joseph is the clone of Magneto.
Yes, Agnino is currently vegetable,so to speak. Yes, yes,
because the professor x so somebody Idon't remember who created Joseph, but he's
straw. Oh yes. And thenhe showed up in Magneto's out and everybody

(30:47):
thought it was Magneto for a longtime, but then it turned out he's
just the clone and he was lastand then eventually Silock or Cannon or whoever
cut his head off, and thenhe showed up recently in the Scarlet Witch
comics by Seberlando. You know, the whole just a clone thing happens a
lot in this universe, it seems. Mm hm. So I'll buy it,

(31:11):
all right. I will say I'mgoing to be cosplaying Joseph soon,
so I'm excited about that. Absolutely. Yes. Is it going to be
this look with his purply rogue though, it's gonna be the X Men training
uniform, long white wig. It'sgonna be great. I'm excited for this
anyways. Yes, a gambit Magnetoslash Joseph Rogue triangle happening, and uh

(31:37):
yeah, and Rogue just you know, she just doesn't know when to quit.
I guess I don't know that poseshe's doing on that chair, you
know what, No, I sitlike this, you do, I do?
You've seen it like that? Yeah, so I met the pool,
so I can't say anything, Rogue, I believe you. There's a moment
where they have a toast. Here'sto us and those like us and everyone

(32:01):
chanced together darn few left, whichis a very odd toast. Yeah.
Well is this post House of mNo, this is not. This is
post onslaught. Yeah, right afteronslaught. House of them is like six
or seven years away, right, yeah, because there there hasn't been like

(32:21):
the loss of a bunch of mutants. But this might also be the era
where there's not too many of them. They haven't well. Rogue does say,
don't we have a ride to bea scooch tense after all we've been
through with onslaught, because Betsy sensesthe tension. Yeah, I'm a scooch
tense. Sometimes it's okay, wecan all we all have room to be

(32:46):
tense. Cyclops is fully burning theburgers on the grill. Yes, bully
full one. Uh who wants theirburgers well done? Oh my god?
He such a like I love asuch an old school guy. He's like
whatever happened to real charcoal and starterfluid? We we then get an intense

(33:09):
ping pong ball match between some ofthe characters. Money is so bored,
And look at how Husk is holdingher paddle. Yeah, she's holding it
like yeah. I don't know ifthat's Japanese style or whatever. There's some
sort of special way praying mantis ofsome sort. But I do love how
I would never want to play pingpong against Domino like win. I want

(33:35):
to be on her team. Yes, I would be on her team for
sure. The ball goes bouncing awayand lands in the middle of the potato
salad. Oh yes, oh,but he better not dare hand that ball
back to Money like that shatter startplucks it out. There's this disgusting image
of Cannonball shoving it in his mouthto suck all the potato, and then

(34:00):
he spits it over to Monet, who's like, a, yeah, I
guess we're kind of missing some precursor, like he likes her, kind of
like he's trying to flirt with hervibe. But yeah, he kind of
he kind of lost that that thatHasey life really came out in that moment.
Sunspot is a rolling on the floorlaughing. Also, nothing says late

(34:22):
nineties like like cannon Ball's terrible goatee, like his little soul patch chin.
Oh yeah, and the in thehaircut of course, yes, yes,
that that kind of Kurt Cobain haircut. Look middle part. Who wears a
middle part? Not me? Nomoment you used to. It was the

(34:44):
era I used to early nineties bowlcut, later nineties butt cut, right,
Yeah, yeah, it's all aboutthat, Yes, well, I
guess now that they're at the barbecue, Wolverine has put on some clothes and
he has decided that he is readyto apologize to Cable, because you know,

(35:10):
they shared some words and they're goingto just basically come to terms man
to man that they can disagree toagree. But apparently Wolverine killed Cable's son,
Tyler, who was running the Uhwhat the horse dark Dark writers Gables

(35:34):
flop son Tyler Dave Spring slash Tolliverslash Genesis. I fucking hate this guy.
Yeah, he's a forgettable character tome. I was like, oh,
yes, that's right, son clonewhat son? Son of Cable?
Who is the clone Joseph? Joseph'sthe clone, So this is Cable's sign.
Joseph's the clone of Magneto Stripe isthe clone of Cable. Tyler is

(36:00):
the son of Cable's wife Jen Scott, who's named after his parents, who
lives in the future. Oh wait, god, co makes you guice?
All right, then what happened? And then we have X math. Yes,
well, so I guess they cheerseach other some beers and then they're
everything's fine. Wolverine killed his son, cheers, It's all good. Uh,

(36:24):
they changed the costume so they canget one big group photo and surprise
Gateway shows up just cuz why not. He was hanging out with Generation X
at the time. What are yourthoughts on this big double page spread of
the teams? They like all thepeople flying up in the background. Yes,
boom booms in best slap already ishanging out between cyclops his legs.

(36:46):
It's so cute it it looks likeit looks like the cosplay photos, like
conventions that we participated. Hmmm. But let me tell you something this page.
When I was a kid, thisis the kind of page I live
for. Yes, because I wouldstare at a page like this for hours

(37:07):
just looking at everybody. Mm hmmm, because it's like, you know,
everybody's there, remember everybody's name. It's amazing. If I'm counting right,
there's thirty one characters on this stubble. Oh I don't they count. I
forgot Wolverine wore that red bandana thingbecause with the no nose look hate it.
But it was blue I've about fora long time. Must have been

(37:29):
just red for this period. Ohmy god, Jubilee, did they change
her hair again? Yes, theycut her hair rude. She just got
a quick, quick haired cut inbetween the bag. So this is I
think a different artist now, LikeI feel like whoever started the issue now
it's flipped over to somebody else. The storm has her hair flips back.

(37:50):
It's fine. Why does Leech looklike a chucky doll? He looks like
he's he looks like he's nine inchestall. Yes, him and Already were
always always the size set in theGeneration X issues? Is the guy behind
Cyclops? Is that Mondo Mondo andChamber? Yeah? Yeah, oh my
god, you guys, Okay,so Jean Gray's she kind of looks like

(38:15):
like she's the bad review of CreepyToy Guy, you know. Yeah,
guys like Creepy Toy Guy is goingto do an actually with her on her
rusted face, yes, her flattitties. Yeah, that's my best Creepy

(38:35):
Toy Guy. Yeah, everybody Instagramdot com at Creepy Toy Guy the genius.
And Emma is you know, flashingsome leg you know. So it's
like she's kind of conservative but canonnat of course that's very her jacket and

(38:57):
panties, Yeah, jacket and pantiesvery sensible for Emma, Like I'm called
today, I'm conservative. I lovethis. I love this mutant circuit.
In a couple of pages where weget Cannonball flying boom boom, Jubilee and
sun Spot up into the sky fora giant fireworks display, it feels very
crikola to me. It's super supercute. Yeah, I don't understand what

(39:17):
so is Cannonball holding one, no, sun Spots holding both and cannonballs just
there for support. I mean,Sunspot's the only one that can fly besides
Cannonball. Maybe Cannibal's just helping liftthem up there, or like, I
don't know, he's got he's gota he's not not vulnerable when he's blasting.
I know. I just felt he'sa little unnecessary. He was like,
I want to I'm not gonna gethurt, so I'm going to go

(39:38):
up there too, where sun Spot, the actual strong one I think,
is carrying the girls up there. But I just was like, what's his
purpose exactly? I feel like Sunspotjust barely learned how to fly to right,
That's true, it's it's it's it'snew. Well, so we've had
the baseball, we've had the poolparty, we've had the bar we've had

(40:00):
the fireworks, and now it's timeto meditate. Yes, you know what
this is. This issue is ahell fire gala issue. It's just a
little more private. They're doing amine beld now, like it's a whole
gala. Oh my god, youknow what. You're right, Yes,
you're right. They all hold handsand all the mutants in Whovill gather together
and sing dahou dore and like makea little uni mind. It's cute.

(40:22):
It is cute. I love howthey're like, don't go too deep in
my mind, don't scroll left anddon't scroll right. But this is I
mean, this is how they defeatedthe dominion at the end of Krakoa,
right, like all the mutants mergedand made the Phoenix sports. Here they

(40:43):
are like projecting their minds together. It's it's cute. I love this.
Yes, I like it too.And then then you know, it's the
end of the day. After allthat activity, they decide that they're going
back into the mansion, which issurprisingly in one piece. It's not blown
not y'all played baseball, murdered asentinel and then had a barbecue and like

(41:07):
a little party. Yeah, it'sa mindful meditation. That's great. I
loved it. This is a cutepalette cleanser, like lovely little issue.
I'm actually very fond of it,despite some of the art inconsistencies. Yeah,
no, it was really fun.Thank you so much for bringing that
over to us, and it wasa joy to recap. Yes, indeed,

(41:30):
did you guys have a single favoritemoment? Oh gosh, I would
have to say anytime it's Gambit playingsports shirtless I'm in so I was just
like, oh, we get tosee this again. I love it.
I love the creativity of the camquarderof the home video. I thought that

(41:51):
was really well done and fun,and the way that the focus moved wherever
the camera was moving and what characterwas holding it and stuff just was I
almost wish there was more of thatthan just like the two or three pages.
I like that everybody got like alittle moment. I love the Mutants
circuit, but the weirdest is justBobby dumping ice down Sam's pants like I

(42:13):
can't get fast It awesome. Well, that was a blast. We really
appreciate you taking the time talking sentinels, and so if people want to listen
to all of your recent Sentinel stuff. They can just go to Gray malka
Lane and is it Are you donewith your Sentinel era? I mean yeah,

(42:34):
Sentinels was back in April, soas we are approaching July, you
can go back. We have abig Maxi episode called Sentinels one oh one,
which is incredible. If you wantto just listen to one from that
month, look for it. InJuly, we are celebrating women of color
on my show, so we're talkingall about the way female black characters are
portrayed in the early seventies. Aswe get ready for Storm, we're covering

(42:54):
all the appearances of Nekra and Nightshadeand a bunch of classic kind of exploitation
era villains. Working on recording thosenow and it's a delightful time. So
yeah, you can follow graymalk andLang grimalkin underscore Land on Instagram or look
for me on any of your podcastplatforms. Okay, everybody, we are

(43:15):
here with the Uncanny New New.No, we don't need that much chamber
now. No, this is aslow, slow news day, so we're
all I'm killing time, no,because we've got tons of updates always for
you guys, But for today,we are going to talk about the uncanny

(43:38):
experience, the four houses of ExevierInstitute, and we're going to take the
which house assignment are you quiz sowe can see which house Chris and I
will be sorted into. So startingwith the houses, we have four houses
at our event. Yeah. Thefirst one on his House Morlock. You

(44:00):
know, they are located with theircommon room in the tunnels of Xavier Institute,
but by Callisto. Mm hmmm, yes. The primary color is being
orange and gray, and they areour counterculture house, you know, people
that don't quite fit into normal societyand they want to live in the tunnels

(44:22):
with their Morlocked friends. Yeah. And their merchandise item, which you can
buy in the school store, isa punk looking vest that's stud it,
yes, and it's got a coolembroidered logo of House Morlock on the back.
So we just go check out thestore via the homepage you can see
what that looks like. And allthe other merchant that we're going to talk

(44:42):
about. Next, we have HousePride. House Pride is of course headed
by Kitty Pride. It is colorspurple, silver and white. The common
room is the lecture hall where welearn everything of course. And yeah,
this is our intellectual smartypants house yep. And their merchandise item is a purple

(45:07):
hoodie, so go check out HousePride, y'all. Yeah, absolutely,
And then we also have House Xavier. They're founder obviously Charles Xavier. Their
colors are green and white, theircommon room is a student hall, and
they value leadership, unity and inclusivity. Goes Xavier. And our last house

(45:31):
is House hell Fire, our ambitioushouse ready to take on the world,
headed by Emma Frost. Common room, of course is the Hellfire Club and
colors are red, black and white. So if you guys are feeling the
fire of hell Fire, make sureto join that house. You can learn

(45:52):
all about these houses and all sortsof details on the website at the UNCA
Experience dot com. So you canjust go there, scroll to the house
button under what to expect, andyou can learn all about it. So
let's take the quiz. Let's takeit all, right, So, if
you want to take this quiz,go to our Instagram, click on the
links in our bio and you willsee a link for type form. Click

(46:15):
that link. You can also getit if you were joined in our email

we may be posting the link again. Yes, and we've shared the link
also on Facebook and x as well, so you can swell so you can
end it. Yes, discover yourmutant destiny. Which house is Savior Institute?
Do you belong to? Whether youembody the resilience of House Morlock,

(46:37):
the ambition of House how Fire, the leadership of Hou Savior, or the
ingenuity of House Pride. This quizwill reveal your true mutant family. Take
the quiz now and join your fellowmutants in the house that's destined to be
your new home. All right,we are both going to be taking this
quiz on separate devices and see whichhouses that we get sorted into. Okay,

(47:00):
first question up, who will beyour dorm mate at Xavier Institute.
Choosing your dorm roommate is crucial.Think about the unique personalities of your peers
and pick the one who will leadyour confidant. Who will be your confidant
and ally This choice will shape yourdaily life and adventures, forging strong bonds
as you grow into your mutant potential. Okay, our options are cheerleader,

(47:22):
outcast, gamer, nerd, rebel, academic, fashionista, class clown,
and goth. So if I'm goingto pick somebody to be my roommate that
I think is going to help meat Xavier's, is I'm going to go
with somebody who is not exactly likeme, but you know, somebody that

(47:43):
might help me out. So I'mgoing to go with fashionista, so she
appress me. My god. IfI was going to go with the gamer
nerd, but if you're going togo with that logic, which I kind
of like, I'm going to switchit up a little bit. I'm going
to say the academic. Oh yeah, so you know, because your roommate's
gonna be your palth, They're gonna, you know, and I'm gonna I
want to, you know, copyoff of our reports and exams. Indeed,

(48:07):
all right, next, which petwill accompany you at the institute At
Xavier's, your mutabilities enhance your connectionwith animals. These loyal companions will be
vital to your journey, offering supportand friendship every step of the way.

(48:27):
Options are unicorn ponies, scorpion, alien, dragon, ai, robodog,
shark, peacock, golden retriever, and carnivorous plant I am going to too
an Ai robodog. I know that'snot a real pet, but I feel

(48:49):
like I would love a robot familiarlike they have in Star Wars, So
I'm gonna go with that. Howcould I not go with the unicorn pony?
That's true? True? You know, all like how cute? All
right? Next up? How wouldyou make new friends at Xavier Institute?
Select your favorite technique to connect withyour fellow mutants. All right. You
can either show off your new car, watch, or cell phone. You

(49:14):
can organize a thrilling sports event andinvite everyone to join. You use emotional
and logical manipulation to force a bond. You bond with others by exploring the
hidden areas of the school. Youimpress others with your knowledge and innovative ideas.
You share your journey of overcoming adversity, inspire others. You start a

(49:37):
long, thought provoking conversation about mutantphilosophy. Lastly, you volunteer to help
others with their studies and projects. So how are we going to make friends?
Hmm? Because there's a lot ofthings that I like to do.
I'm actually quite good at making friends, so I'm not a no at all.

(50:00):
So I'm not going to impress withmy knowledge. I'm not a provoking
conversationalist, I'm not a manipulator.I'm going to volunteer to help people with
their studies because I feel like that'sthe person that's how I would make friends.

(50:20):
You know, It's so funny forme, I like think about like,
oh, what would you do?But then what do I actually do?
And it's like every time I leavethe house, it's because I'm organizing
the event that we're going to.So the parallel answer for me would be
you organize serlingk sports events and inviteeveryone to join you. Done? Done?
Which school team sport would you join? Well, there is a range

(50:45):
of exciting team sports to channel yourmutant abilities and build camaraderie. Choose the
sport that resonates with you and envisionyourself showcasing your skills in the arena.
Hmmm. Our options are show choir, bol, varsity football, esports,
cyber defense, lacrosse, hockey, and debate. Oh this is a tough

(51:07):
one. No it's not show choir. I'm going esports. What's your ideal
sanctuary? Your ideal environment plays asignificant role in shaping your abilities and overall
well being. Deeply contemplate each settingand choose the location that resonates with your
soul. Options are cave, concerthall, gym, penthouse, park,

(51:34):
laboratory, library, and city.I'm gonna go with the penthouse. I
want to see the view. Ohthat's a good joy. You know.
If I can open the window justto get like some breeze, that'd be
hot. I'm gonna choose the park. The park, the park with people.
Yes, being outside in nature, that's gonna be my epicenter of whatever

(52:00):
feeling up for the challenges of skewOkay, how do you respond to a
school bullied eeskew bully? Yes?Imagine you're walking down the hallway at Xavier
Institute when you come across a fellowstudent being bullied. What do you do?
You confront the bully head on witha commanding presence, making them back

(52:22):
down immediately. You utilize psychological tactics, subtly manipulating the bully to leave the
victim alone. You reveal your ownstruggles and show empathy, creating an emotional
connection that diffuses the situation. Youengage the bully in a logical debate,
making them realize the futility of theiraction. You use your agility in street

(52:44):
smarts to outmaneuver the bully, protectingthe victim. You use your social influence
and charm to publicly shame the bully, deterring future incidents. You approach calmly,
diffusing the tension and mediating a peacefulresolution. Devise a clever plan that
outsmarts the bully, leaving them nochoice but to retreat. All right,

(53:06):
already know what I'm choosing. IAm going to use my social influence and
charm to embarrass the bully. Ohmy god, you what you're so what?
Because I realized in my role ofpublicity is that I'll know all the
deeds on this person, yeah, and their family and everything, and I'll
be like, talk about that time, bully, And you'll be like,

(53:29):
no, I'm just integrated. What'syours? Minus you reveal your own struggles
and show empathy, greeting and emotionalconnection. That diffuses the choice. I
got it until they punch. You. See, We're all human, okay,
we all have our own like strugglesand stuff. And if we can
connect and real life both okay,Which school club will unleash your unique potential

(53:54):
by joining a club at the XavierInstitute, you'll develop your talents and find
us supportive community of like minded mutants. Select the club that aligns with your
interest and abilities. Options are StudentCouncil, GSA, book Club, Horticulture
Club, your book committee, dramaclub, chess club, Art club.

(54:15):
So develop your talents and find asupportive community. I'm going horticulture. Oh
my god, you are a Polan. I'm a dad. I have a
plant daddy, and I want toconnect with my plant people. Seriously,
Yes for me. I picked dramaclub because, like you know, I

(54:35):
did drama in high school and that'swhere I belonged. So did I?
Okay? How will you find themissing Mutant? A fellow mutant student has
mysteriously gone missing, and it's upto you to solve the mystery and ensure
their safe return. How will youuse your skills and resources to track them
down and bring them back to safety. You analyze and patterns, creating a

(55:00):
detailed map to predict where the studentmight be. You collaborate with the school
staff and students to gather information inpiece together clues. You explore the hidden
areas of the school, believing thestudent might be in a secluded spot.
You use technology and gadgets to scanany unusual activity and track the student's last

(55:21):
known location. You conduct a thoroughinvestigation, using your connections and resources to
uncover hidden information. You interrogate potentialwitnesses using your charm and influence to get
the truth. You use your keensense and intuition and to track down any
signs of the missing student. Youorganize a coordinated search party that and lead

(55:44):
the effort to cover every part ofthe campus. Okay, I am going
to well, I'll tell you whatI'm going to do. I Am going
to organizeer coordinated search party and leadthe effort to uncover every part of the

(56:04):
campus. Why Because I like organizingpeople and getting people together. Yes,
I'm I'm between. I explore thehidden areas of the school because I'm a
I'm a doer, So I feellike I would just jut out on myself
and do it. But I alsocould see myself using my connections and resources
to uncover hidden information. So I'mgoing to go with that one. Okay,

(56:28):
which lunch do you choose? Atthe Xavier Institute Cafeteria In the vibrant
and diverse cafeteria of Xavier Institute.Your choice of lunch says a lot about
your personality and preferences, from gourmetdishes to comforting classics. There's something for
every mutant palette. Which mil willyou choose to fuel your day and reflect

(56:49):
to your true self? Asterisks?None of this food will be served at
the end? Campis none of it? Maybe a burger? Right? Maybe?
Okay? Options are never ending, ram and noodle, woo, caviar
on toasted points with crime fresh aspace astronaut rations with freeze, dried treats,
gross fruit smoothie with a protein bar, loaded nachos with the pinos and

(57:15):
sour cream, charcuterie board with gourmetcheeses and meats, hardy beef stew with
rustic bread, and a classic cheeseburgerwith fries and a milkshake. Okay,
what am I ordering at the cafecoria? I mean, I'm kind of hungry.
Milksho I want it all? Ithought that smoothie was a milkshake.
The photo of the smoothie and Isaid smoothie, No, I want the

(57:37):
milkshake. So I'm getting a burger, I'm getting loaded nachos. Okay,
which movie will you choose for amovie night. You have the honor of
selecting the film that will set thetone for the evening. Your choice will
reflect your personality and make a lastingimpression on your new friends at Xavier Institute.
Choose the film that best showcases whoyou are and creates a memorable experience

(58:00):
for everyone. Okay. The optionsare Bring It On, The Devil Wears
Praduct, Goodwill, Hunting, TheBreakfast Club, Cruel Intentions, The Goonies,
Fight Club, and the Social Network. Okay, so I need to
pick a movie. Yeah, thishas got to be, like, you
know, a movie that represents you. Yeah, and then a bunch of

(58:22):
people will enjoy it. Yes,I'm going Goonies for sure, because that
is like one of my top favoritemovies. Because it really it is for
me too. I'm gonna say, like, I want to go a little
more adult and say not too adult, not like not like Cruel Intentions.
Oh you know, right, althoughI do love that movie, I'm gonna
go bring it on. Oh Ilove Bringing On Adult like adult movie.
